  • Problem: Preparing teeth for filling with tooth-coloured composite-fillings by etching dentin surfaces leads to demineralisation and weakening of dentin structure without gaining any long-term protection. By using 9.5% buffered hydrofluoric acid [HF], which is usually used for the conditioning of ceramic restorations, in a mixture with 36% o-phosphoric acid it was hopeful to reach a strengthening of dentin by the fluorine of the hydrofluoric acid. Point of investigation in this study was the research of compound strength of various bonding systems to dentin while using the acid mixture for conditioning. Due to long term research a large number of dental bonding systems established at the market. We chose three of them which were quite popular and therefore often used. They were Scotchbond 1, Syntac Sprint and Prime & Bond NT. By using these bonding systems we adapted composite material to dentin slices and investigated the strength of compound. Another point of investigation was how the surface of dentin would react to treatment with this acid mixture of hydrofluoric acid and phosphoric acid. Therefor a SEM based investigation focused on thickness of bonding-layers, hybrid-layers and length of tagging. We also tested the influence of two different liquids for simulation of dentin liquor. On the one hand we chose Ringer-solution, on the other hand aqua dest.. Results: The bond strength of Scotchbond 1 (6.00 MPa), Syntac Sprint (0.75 MPa) and Prime & Bond NT (6.15 MPa) wasn’t as good as achieved by MAY (2000) after conditioning dentin with 36% o-phosphoric acid. The SEM indicated a reduced thickness of bonding layer. A hybrid-layer was not clearly visible. Also the tagging results were much worse than the achieved results of MAY using phosphoric acid. A significant influence of the used simulation liquid for dentin liquor could not be found. In this study the simulation by aqua dest. achieved higher bond strength compared to use of Ringer-solution. SIEPE (2002) achieved higher strength by using Ringer-solution. So there still couldn’t be found a uniformity of results. But apart from the results of this study, any use of simulation liquid for dentin liquor comes closer to reality than using no simulation liquid at all.
