Minerotrophic Pinus rotundata mires in the south-German forelands of the Alps emphasizing their syntaxonomic position
1934 em. Seibert in Oberd. 1992 erheblich abweichen.
- This paper deals with minerotrophic Pinus rotundata mires, a Pine - dominated wet woodland rarely examined phytosociologically and ecologically. The emphasis is on the classification of this community and its position in the syntaxonomic system. Sites conditions, syndynamic aspects and importance for nature conservation are also presented. The minerotrophic Pinus rotundata mires occur on sites ranging from acid, oligobasic to subneutral, basic mires. Accordingly, the species inventory varies. A floristical omparison, with special reference to the syntaxonomic classification system, shows that these woodlands are considerably different from the previously described Pino-Sphagnetum Kästner & Flößner 1933 em. Neuhäusl 1969 and Vaccinio-Pinetum rotundatae Oberd. 1934 em. Seibert in Oberd. 1992. These Pinus rotundata mires are more similar to Caricion lasiocarpae Vanden Bergh. in Lebr. et al. 1949 alliance and should be called a Carex lasiocarpa-Pinus rotundata community. The connection of this community to higher syntaxa is discussed but not solved. A new proposal for limiting the validity of the character species to structural vegetation types (made by other authors) could represent a new direction, not only for treating this community but for the whole group of wet woodlands.- Syndynamically, the Carex lasiocarpa-Pinus rotundata community is a temporary stage, but probably also a climax stage of vegetation succession. Indications of its climax status are the permanent high water level, regime of basic groundwater (geotropic), wide areas of hollows and an unrivaled dominion of Pinus rotundata, especially in the phase of optimum development. The Carex lasiocarpa-Pinus rotundata community is very important for nature conservation. Its values include its status as a natural ecosystem by reason of stratification; its species spectrum and site quality; high species diversity; occurence of many, partly very endangered and biogeographically important, arctic-boreal species, partly remnants of the glacial period.
