• "Pflanzengesellschaft" als Allgemeines beinhaltet sowohl einen Typus- als auch einen Klassenbegriff. Der pflanzensoziologische Typus (Vegetationstypus) wird als (maximales) Merkmalskorrelat begriffen, das eine bestimmte Taxakombination und deren standörtliche Bindung umfasst. Das Modell des Vegetationstypus, das einen Aspekt des Typus darstellt, wird im allgemeinen lediglich auf einer Taxaverbindung begründet. Es basiert auf der Abstraktion von ähnlichen Vegetationsausschnitten. Der Typus ist nicht durch einen einzelnen Pflanzenbestand individualisierbar. Pflanzengesellschaft als Klasse (Gruppe), hier auf den Begriff „Vegetationseinheit" festgelegt, meint demgegenüber eine Gesamtheit von ähnlichen Vegetationsausschnitten. Diese verkörpern, allgemein gesprochen, die "Elemente" der Klasse. Die Definition der "künstlichen Vegetationseinheit" erfolgt anhand eines einzelnen Merkmals oder einiger weniger Merkmale. Die "natürliche Vegetationseinheit" wird über den Vegetationstypus, d.h. über eine maximale Merkmalskombination, definiert.
• "Plant Community" as a general concept includes both the ideas of a type and of a class. The vegetation type is regarded as a (maximal) correlative concentration of attributes, which includes a certain combination of taxa and their relation to site conditions. The model of the particular vegetation type, which represents an aspect of that type, is based, in general, only on the combination of species. This is based on abstraction from similar concrete communities. The type cannot be individualized by a concrete community. Plant community as a class, here restricted to the term "vegetation unit", means the entirety of similar concrete communities. These incorporate, generally speaking, the elements of the class. The vegetation unit can be artificial or natural. An artificial vegetation unit is defined by a single or by a few attributes, while a natural vegetation unit is defined by the vegetation type, that is by a maximal correlative concentration of attributes.
