Two-pion correlation functions in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN] = 130 GeV have been measured by the STAR (solenoidal tracker at RHIC) detector. The source size extracted by fitting the correlations grows with event multiplicity and decreases with transverse momentum. Anomalously large sizes or emission durations, which have been suggested as signals of quark-gluon plasma formation and rehadronization, are not observed. The Hanbury Brown-Twiss parameters display a weak energy dependence over a broad range in sqrt[sNN].
The first measurements of light antinucleus production in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider are reported. The observed production rates for d-bar and 3He-bar are much larger than in lower energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. A coalescence model analysis of the yields indicates that there is little or no increase in the antinucleon freeze-out volume compared to collisions at CERN SPS energy. These analyses also indicate that the 3He-bar freeze-out volume is smaller than the d-bar freeze-out volume.
We present the first measurement of midrapidity vector meson phi production in Au+Au collisions at RHIC (sqrt[sNN]=130 GeV) from the STAR detector. For the 11% highest multiplicity collisions, the slope parameter from an exponential fit to the transverse mass distribution is T=379±50(stat)±45(syst) MeV, the yield dN/dy=5.73±0.37(stat)±0.69(syst) per event, and the ratio N phi /Nh- is found to be 0.021±0.001(stat)±0.004(syst). The measured ratio N phi /Nh- and T for the phi meson at midrapidity do not change for the selected multiplicity bins.
Elliptic flow from nuclear collisions is a hadronic observable sensitive to the early stages of system evolution. We report first results on elliptic flow of charged particles at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN] = 130 GeV using the STAR Time Projection Chamber at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The elliptic flow signal, v2, averaged over transverse momentum, reaches values of about 6% for relatively peripheral collisions and decreases for the more central collisions. This can be interpreted as the observation of a higher degree of thermalization than at lower collision energies. Pseudorapidity and transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow are also presented.
We report first results on elliptic flow of identified particles at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN] = 130 GeV using the STAR TPC at RHIC. The elliptic flow as a function of transverse momentum and centrality differs significantly for particles of different masses. This dependence can be accounted for in hydrodynamic models, indicating that the system created shows a behavior consistent with collective hydrodynamical flow. The fit to the data with a simple model gives information on the temperature and flow velocities at freeze-out.
The minimum-bias multiplicity distribution and the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity distributions for central collisions have been measured for negative hadrons ( h-) in Au+Au interactions at sqrt[sNN] = 130 GeV. The multiplicity density at midrapidity for the 5% most central interactions is dNh-/d eta | eta = 0 = 280±1(stat)±20(syst), an increase per participant of 38% relative to pp-bar collisions at the same energy. The mean transverse momentum is 0.508±0.012 GeV/c and is larger than in central Pb+Pb collisions at lower energies. The scaling of the h- yield per participant is a strong function of pperp. The pseudorapidity distribution is almost constant within | eta |<1.
We report results on the ratio of midrapidity antiproton-to-proton yields in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN] = 130 GeV per nucleon pair as measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Within the rapidity and transverse momentum range of | y|<0.5 and 0.4<pt<1.0 GeV/c, the ratio is essentially independent of either transverse momentum or rapidity, with an average of 0.65±0.01(stat)±0.07(syst) for minimum bias collisions. Within errors, no strong centrality dependence is observed. The results indicate that at this RHIC energy, although the p-p-bar pair production becomes important at midrapidity, a significant excess of baryons over antibaryons is still present.

We present the first measurements of charge-dependent correlations on angular difference variables η1 − η2 (pseudorapidity) and φ1 − φ2 (azimuth) for primary charged hadrons with transverse momentum 0.15 <= pt <= 2 GeV/c and |η| <= 1.3 from Au–Au collisions at √sNN = 130 GeV. We observe correlation structures not predicted by theory but consistent with evolution of hadron emission geometry with increasing centrality from one-dimensional fragmentation of color strings along the beam direction to an at least two-dimensional hadronization geometry along the beam and azimuth directions of a hadron-opaque bulk medium.

Jets are reconstructed from charged particle momenta in the mid-rapidity region using the sequential recombination kT and anti-kT as well as the SISCone jet finding algorithms with several resolution parameters in the range R=0.2 to 0.6. Differential jet production cross sections measured with the three jet finders are in agreement in the transverse momentum (pT) interval 20<pjet,chT<100 GeV/c. They are also consistent with prior measurements carried out at the LHC by the ATLAS collaboration. The jet charged particle multiplicity rises monotonically with increasing jet pT, in qualitative agreement with prior observations at lower energies. The transverse profiles of leading jets are investigated using radial momentum density distributions as well as distributions of the average radius containing 80% (⟨R80⟩) of the reconstructed jet pT. The fragmentation of leading jets with R=0.4 using scaled pT spectra of the jet constituents is studied. The measurements are compared to model calculations from event generators (PYTHIA, PHOJET, HERWIG). The measured radial density distributions and ⟨R80⟩ distributions are well described by the PYTHIA model (tune Perugia-2011). The fragmentation distributions are better described by HERWIG.

The integrated visible cross section, σb→e=3.47±0.40(stat)+1.12−1.33(sys)±0.07(norm)μb, was extrapolated to full phase space using Fixed Order plus Next-to-Leading Log (FONLL) predictions to obtain the total bb¯ production cross section, σbb¯=130±15.1(stat)+42.1−49.8(sys)+3.4−3.1(extr)±2.5(norm)±4.4(BR)μb.

Event-by-event fluctuations of the mean transverse momentum of charged particles produced in pp collisions at s√ = 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV, and Pb-Pb collisions at sNN−−−−√ = 2.76 TeV are studied as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity using the ALICE detector at the LHC. Dynamical fluctuations indicative of correlated particle emission are observed in all systems. The results in pp collisions show little dependence on collision energy. The Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA and PHOJET are in qualitative agreement with the data. Peripheral Pb-Pb data exhibit a similar multiplicity dependence as that observed in pp. In central Pb-Pb, the results deviate from this trend, featuring a significant reduction of the fluctuation strength. The results in Pb--Pb are in qualitative agreement with previous measurements in Au-Au at lower collision energies and with expectations from models that incorporate collective phenomena.

The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector at backward (−4.46<ycms<−2.96) and forward (2.03<ycms<3.53) rapidity down to zero transverse momentum. The production cross sections of the Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) are presented, as well as the nuclear modification factor and the ratio of the forward to backward yields of Υ(1S). A suppression of the inclusive Υ(1S) yield in p-Pb collisions with respect to the yield from pp collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions is observed at forward rapidity but not at backward rapidity. The results are compared to theoretical model calculations including nuclear shadowing or partonic energy loss effects.

Introduction: Recent animal studies have shown that the alternate renin-angiotensin system (RAS) consisting of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), angiotensin-(1–7) (Ang-(1–7)) and the Mas receptor is upregulated in cirrhosis and contributes to splanchnic vasodilatation and portal hypertension. To determine the potential relevance of these findings to human liver disease, we evaluated its expression and relationship to the patients’ clinical status in subjects with cirrhosis. Methods: Blood sampling from peripheral and central vascular beds was performed intra-operatively for cirrhotic patients at the time of liver transplantation (LT) or trans-jugular intra-hepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedures to measure angiotensin II (Ang II) and Ang-(1–7) peptide levels and ACE and ACE2 enzyme activity. Relevant clinical and hemodynamic data were recorded pre-operatively for all subjects and peripheral blood sampling was repeated 3 months or later post-operatively. Results: Ang-(1–-7) and ACE2 activity were up-regulated more than twofold in cirrhotic subjects both at the time of LT and TIPS and levels returned to comparable levels as control subjects post-transplantation. Ang-(1–7) levels correlated positively with the degree of liver disease severity, as measured by the model for an end-stage liver disease (MELD) and also with clinical parameters of pathological vasodilatation including cardiac output (CO). There were strong correlations found between the ACE2:ACE and the Ang-(1–7):Ang II ratio highlighting the inter-dependence of the alternate and classical arms of the RAS and thus their potential impact on vascular tone. Conclusions: In human cirrhosis, the alternate RAS is markedly upregulated and the activation of this system is associated strongly with features of the hyperdynamic circulation in advanced human cirrhosis.
In this paper, we estimate the demand for homeowner insurance in Florida. Since we are interested in a number of factors influencing demand, we approach the problem from two directions. We first estimate two hedonic equations representing the premium per contract and the price mark-up. We analyze how the contracts are bundled and how contract provisions, insurer characteristics and insured risk characteristics and demographics influence the premium per contract and the price mark-up. Second, we estimate the demand for homeowners insurance using two-stage least squares regression. We employ ISO's indicated loss costs as our proxy for real insurance services demanded. We assume that the demand for coverage is essentially a joint demand and thus we can estimate the demand for catastrophe coverage separately from the demand for noncatastrophe coverage. We determine that price elasticities are less elastic for catastrophic coverage than for non-catastrophic coverage. Further estimated income elasticities suggest that homeowners insurance is an inferior good. Finally, we conclude based on the results of a selection model that our sample of ISO reporting companies well represents the demand for insurance in the Florida market as a whole.
Der Terminus Ausdruck entwickelt sich (ebenso wie l'espressione, the expression, l'expression) zwischen 1700 und 1850 schrittweise zu jenem anthropologisch, künstlerisch und naturwissenschaftlich besetzten Begriffsfeld, dessen epistemischer Höhepunkt erst im späten 19. und in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts erreicht wird. Gerade den praktischen und diskursiven Veränderungen der verschiedenen Ausdruckskulturen während dieser mindestens eineinhalb Jahrhunderte umfassenden Formationszeit des Begriffs soll diese Zusammenstellung von insgesamt zehn Aufsätzen im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Gedankenaustausches zwischen Kunst-, Musik- und Literaturwissenschaft sowie Philosophie-, Wissenschafts- und Kulturgeschichte nachgehen.
Die von älteren Untersuchungen aufgrund der mangelnden Berücksichtigung ihres wissensgeschichtlichen Umfelds insgesamt verkannte Bedeutung der Engelschen Abhandlung liegt in ihrer bei den Zeitgenossen so nicht anzutreffenden Systematisierung einer seit der Mitte des Jahrhunderts nicht mehr allein auf den Vorgang adäquater Darstellung zu reduzierenden, zugleich aber zunehmend unscharf verwendeten Terminologie. Dabei bettet sie den Ausdrucksbegriff – als einen charakteristischen Sonderfall, wie auch als Gegenstück zur Malerei – in einen durch die Auflösung von Rhetorik und Affektenlehre geprägten psycho-physischen und anthropologischen Diskussionszusammenhang ein, während seine musikalische Umsetzung zugleich zum Vorbild für weitere "energische Künste" wie Deklamation, Tanz oder Pantomime avanciert. In Engels Arbeit und ihrem diskursiven Umfeld ist die gleichzeitige Verwendung und textuelle Näherung zweier Begriffsfelder zu beobachten, die sich im 19. Jahrhundert zu dem diskursmächtigen Terminus der "Ausdrucksbewegung" vereinigen werden: Parallel zur Diskussion des schrittweise subjektivierten Verhältnisses von Ausdruck und Malerei wird auch die kinetische Metapher der »Bewegung« von Engel als Vermittlung zwischen einem physischen, u. a. dem Verlauf von Tönen entsprechendem Vorgang und seiner seelischen Wirkung auf den Rezipienten bemüht. Engels Bestreben, seine Ideen an einem breitgefächerten Repertoire zu illustrieren, das sich von Arien Grauns und Hasses über die opéra comique und das Singspiel bis hin zum durch seine Verbindung von Schauspiel und Musik neuartigen Melodram erstreckt, verleiht seinen ästhetischen Überlegungen durch den ersichtlichen Kontakt mit der künstlerischen Praxis dabei zusätzliches argumentatives Gewicht.
In einer fast beiläufig formulierten Bemerkung zur Methode seiner Passagenarbeit spricht Benjamin von der "Notwendigkeit, während vieler Jahre scharf auf jedes zufällige Zitat, jede flüchtige Erwähnung eines Buches hinzuhören" (GS V, 587). Dass – wie in nicht wenigen Prosaminiaturen der Berliner Kindheit – auch für die aufwendige Zusammenstellung der Exzerpte eine ohrenfällige Metapher zur Anwendung gelangt, unterstreicht die Notwendigkeit, sich mit der Bedeutung musikalisch-akustischer Impressionen für seine Vermittlung von Traum, Mythos, Bild und Warenwelt zu befassen. Das bisherige Desinteresse an einem solchen Versuch teilt die kaum mehr überschaubare Benjamin-Exegese mit der musikologischen Literatur, deren Zurückhaltung indessen recht einfach zu erklären ist: Die aus ihrer Sicht für eine musikgeschichtliche Kontextualisierung des Dioramas oder die ästhetischen Konsequenzen des 'Chocks' in Frage kommenden Komponisten werden in der Passagenarbeit fast sämtlich übergangen. Als die intellektuellen Residuen der Hauptstadt des 19. Jahrhunderts kompilierender Flaneur und Chiffonnier ist Benjamin nur bis in die vom Boulevard Haussmann verdrängte Passage de l'Opéra gelangt, deren vom allmählichen Verfall geprägte Atmosphäre schon Aragon zu den subjektiv-surrealistischen Visionen seines Paysan de Paris inspirierte. Was sich innerhalb der Pariser Musiktheater ereignete, findet mit einer Ausnahme sein Interesse hingegen ebenso wenig, wie die Musikforschung die sich in den Bühnenwerken Aubers, Meyerbeers oder Halevys manifestierende "Verstädterung der Oper" ohne eine nennenswerte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Passagenprojekt untersuchte. Und während dessen 1935 verfasstes Exposé die Namen Offenbach und Wagner immerhin im Kontext der ironischen Utopie des Weltausstellungstaumels oder Baudelaires mit dem Gesamtkunstwerk assoziierter Flucht vor dem gesellschaftlichen Dasein der Künste8 erwähnt, fehlt der gerade für die musikalische Umsetzung der von Benjamin als zentrale Erkenntnisquelle erachteten Dialektik von "Traum" und "Erwachen" (vgl. z. B. 490–510, 579–580) unverzichtbare Hector Berlioz. Hier verbirgt sich – denkt man an Werke wie die Symphonie Fantastique, Lelio oder Harold en Italie – eine auch von der Berlioz-Literatur noch gänzlich unbeachtete Konstellation. Benjamins Einbindung eines kompositorischen Zeitgenossen in eine divergente Gedankenstränge zusammenführende Metapher oder ein "dialektisches Bild" erfordert demgegenüber eine präzise Kontextualisierung: So erscheinen in einer der mythologisierenden Eisenbahnepisoden Orpheus, Eurydike und Hermes auf dem Bahnsteig, wo eine sich aus dem aufgetürmten Gepäck formende Kofferkrypta die zum Melodram geronnene antike Urgeschichte christlich sublimiert (512).
Enhanced labeling density and whole-cell 3D dSTORM imaging by repetitive labeling of target proteins

With continuing advances in the resolving power of super-resolution microscopy, the inefficient labeling of proteins with suitable fluorophores becomes a limiting factor. For example, the low labeling density achieved with antibodies or small molecule tags limits attempts to reveal local protein nano-architecture of cellular compartments. On the other hand, high laser intensities cause photobleaching within and nearby an imaged region, thereby further reducing labeling density and impairing multi-plane whole-cell 3D super-resolution imaging. Here, we show that both labeling density and photobleaching can be addressed by repetitive application of trisNTA-fluorophore conjugates reversibly binding to a histidine-tagged protein by a novel approach called single-epitope repetitive imaging (SERI). For single-plane super-resolution microscopy, we demonstrate that, after multiple rounds of labeling and imaging, the signal density is increased. Using the same approach of repetitive imaging, washing and re-labeling, we demonstrate whole-cell 3D super-resolution imaging compensated for photobleaching above or below the imaging plane. This proof-of-principle study demonstrates that repetitive labeling of histidine-tagged proteins provides a versatile solution to break the "labeling barrier" and to bypass photobleaching in multi-plane, whole-cell 3D experiments.
Accurate labeling of endogenous proteins for advanced light microscopy in living cells remains challenging. Nanobodies have been widely used for antigen labeling, visualization of subcellular protein localization and interactions. To facilitate an expanded application, we present a scalable and high-throughput strategy to simultaneously target multiple endogenous proteins in living cells with micro- to nanometer resolution. For intracellular protein labeling, we advanced nanobodies by site-specific and stoichiometric attachment of bright organic fluorophores. Their fast and fine-tuned intracellular transfer by microfluidic cell squeezing enabled high-throughput delivery with less than 10% dead cells. This strategy allowed for the dual-color imaging of distinct endogenous cellular structures, and culminated in super-resolution imaging of native protein networks in genetically non-modified living cells. The simultaneous delivery of multiple engineered nanobodies does not only offer exciting prospects for multiplexed imaging of endogenous protein, but also holds potential for visualizing native cellular structures with unprecedented accuracy.
Background: There is absence of specific biomarkers and an incomplete understanding of the pathophysiology of exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Methods and findings: Eighty-eight vitreous samples (73 from patients with treatment naïve AMD and 15 control samples from patients with idiopathic floaters) were analyzed with capillary electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry in this retrospective case series to define potential candidate protein markers of AMD. Nineteen proteins were found to be upregulated in vitreous of AMD patients. Most of the proteins were plasma derived and involved in biological (ion) transport, acute phase inflammatory reaction, and blood coagulation. A number of proteins have not been previously associated to AMD including alpha-1-antitrypsin, fibrinogen alpha chain and prostaglandin H2-D isomerase. Alpha-1-antitrypsin was validated in vitreous of an independent set of AMD patients using Western blot analysis. Further systems biology analysis of the data indicated that the observed proteomic changes may reflect upregulation of immune response and complement activity.
Conclusions: Proteome analysis of vitreous samples from patients with AMD, which underwent an intravitreal combination therapy including a core vitrectomy, steroids and bevacizumab, revealed apparent AMD-specific proteomic changes. The identified AMD-associated proteins provide some insight into the pathophysiological changes associated with AMD.
Molecular and cellular research modalities for the study of liver pathologies have been tremendously improved over the recent decades. Advanced technologies offer novel opportunities to establish cell isolation techniques with excellent purity, paving the path for 2D and 3D microscopy and high-throughput assays (e.g., bulk or single-cell RNA sequencing). The use of stem cell and organoid research will help to decipher the pathophysiology of liver diseases and the interaction between various parenchymal and non-parenchymal liver cells. Furthermore, sophisticated animal models of liver disease allow for the in vivo assessment of fibrogenesis, portal hypertension and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and for the preclinical testing of therapeutic strategies. The purpose of this review is to portray in detail novel in vitro and in vivo methods for the study of liver cell biology that had been presented at the workshop of the 8th meeting of the European Club for Liver Cell Biology (ECLCB-8) in October of 2018 in Bonn, Germany.
Im Sinne einer Musikhistorie als "Plural von Zusammenhängen" (H. Blumenberg), deren sich überkreuzende Fäden der narrativen Bündelung durch Hörer und Chronisten bedürfen, erweist sich Schönbergs "Überlebender aus Warschau" als ein Scharnierstück der von politischen Verwerfungen durchsetzten Musikgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Einbeziehung des die Dignität kultureller und religiöser Selbstbehauptung symbolisierenden Glaubensbekenntnisses setzt kompositionsgeschichtlich einerseits eine national-religiöse Tradition fort, denkt man etwa an die Schlüsselstellung, die das Zitat von Luthers Choral "Ein feste Burg" in nicht wenigen Werken des 19. Jahrhunderts einnimmt. Andererseits resultiert auch die Wirkung des 'Survivor' - wie Reinhold Brinkmann im Zeichen der um und nach 1968 leidenschaftlich ausgetragenen Diskussion der politischen Aussagekraft musikalischer Werke betonte - aus der Aktivierung des politischen Textinhalts durch eine dezidiert musikalische Konzeption: Die dem "Shema Yisrael" vorausgehende musikalische Steigerung lässt sich als kompositorisches Modell bereits im apotheotisch angelegten Schluss von Schönbergs 'Gurreliedern' ("Erwacht, erwacht ihr Blumen zur Wonne") nachweisen. Auf dynamischer Ebene ist diese Klimax der Takte 72-80, die es buchstäblich darauf anlegt, den Hörer zu überwältigen, durch das anziehende Tempo (von Viertel=60 bis Viertel=160) und ein Crescendo zum dreifachen Forte, rhythmisch durch die aus der Erzählerstimme in das Orchester überspringenden triolischen Figuren, sowie tonal durch ein chromatisches Wechselspiel zwischen den vier Ausprägungen des übermäßigen Dreiklangs und der dadurch ebenfalls erforderlichen Transposition der Reihenformen bestimmt. Schönbergs ideelle Besinnung auf die Religion stützt sich kompositorisch somit ein Stück weit gerade auf ihr säkularisiertes Gegenstück - jene musikalischen Überhöhungen, die das Zeitalter der "Weltanschauungsmusik" in Form einer bisweilen hypertrophen Kunstreligion zelebrierte. Die Erinnerung des "Überlebenden" wird so auf den "grandiose moment" des musikalischen Widerstands konzentriert, während Schönberg eine gleichwertige Einbeziehung des Erzählertexts in das motivisch- tonale Gefüge der Komposition dezidiert ausschließt. Trotz dieser historischen Verortung steht der von Adorno als "autonome Gestaltung der zur Hölle gesteigerten Heteronomie" beargwöhnte 'Survivor' zugleich aber nicht nur ideengeschichtlich, sondern durchaus auch kompositionstechnisch - wie hier an Kompositionen von Schönbergs (posthumem) Schwiegersohn Luigi Nono gezeigt werden soll - mit avancierten Beispielen einer 'musique engagée' der 1960er Jahre in Verbindung.
Background: Ipilimumab, a cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) blocking antibody, has been approved for the treatment of metastatic melanoma and induces adverse events (AE) in up to 64% of patients. Treatment algorithms for the management of common ipilimumab-induced AEs have lead to a reduction of morbidity, e.g. due to bowel perforations. However, the spectrum of less common AEs is expanding as ipilimumab is increasingly applied. Stringent recognition and management of AEs will reduce drug-induced morbidity and costs, and thus, positively impact the cost-benefit ratio of the drug. To facilitate timely identification and adequate management data on rare AEs were analyzed at 19 skin cancer centers.
Methods and Findings: Patient files (n = 752) were screened for rare ipilimumab-associated AEs. A total of 120 AEs, some of which were life-threatening or even fatal, were reported and summarized by organ system describing the most instructive cases in detail. Previously unreported AEs like drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), granulomatous inflammation of the central nervous system, and aseptic meningitis, were documented. Obstacles included patientś delay in reporting symptoms and the differentiation of steroid-induced from ipilimumab-induced AEs under steroid treatment. Importantly, response rate was high in this patient population with tumor regression in 30.9% and a tumor control rate of 61.8% in stage IV melanoma patients despite the fact that some patients received only two of four recommended ipilimumab infusions. This suggests that ipilimumab-induced antitumor responses can have an early onset and that severe autoimmune reactions may reflect overtreatment.
Conclusion: The wide spectrum of ipilimumab-induced AEs demands doctor and patient awareness to reduce morbidity and treatment costs and true ipilimumab success is dictated by both objective tumor responses and controlling severe side effects.
Background & Aims: Phosphodiesterase‐5 inhibitors (PDE‐5‐I) are used for treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), which is common in patients with cirrhosis. They may improve portal hypertension (PH), but contradictory data on efficacy and side‐effects have been reported. Non‐selective beta blockers (NSBB) reduce portal pressure, but might aggravate ED. Thus, we evaluated the combination of PDE‐5‐I with NSBB and its impact on PH and ED in experimental cirrhosis.
Methods: ED was assessed in cirrhotic patients (n = 86) using standardized questionnaire. Experimental cirrhosis was induced by bile‐duct‐ligation or carbon‐tetrachloride intoxication in rats. Corpus cavernosum pressure – a surrogate of ED ‐, as well as systemic and portal haemodynamics, were measured in vivo and in situ after acute administration of udenafil alone or in combination with propranolol. mRNA and protein levels of PDE‐5 signalling were analysed using PCR and western Blot.
Results: ED in humans was related to severity of liver disease and to NSBB treatment. PDE‐5 was mainly expressed in hepatic stellate cells and upregulated in human and experimental cirrhosis. Propranolol reduced corpus cavernosum pressure in cirrhotic rats and it was restored by udenafil. Even though udenafil treatment improved PH, it led to a reduction of mean arterial pressure. The combination of udenafil and propranolol reduced portal pressure and hepatic resistance without systemic side‐effects.
Conclusions: ED is common with advanced cirrhosis and concomitant NSBB treatment. The combination of PDE‐5‐I and NSBB improves ED and PH in experimental cirrhosis.
Background & Aims: Acute‐on‐chronic liver failure (ACLF) is characterized by high short‐term mortality and systemic inflammation (SI). Recently, different cardiodynamic states were shown to independently predict outcomes in cirrhosis. The relationship between cardiodynamic states, SI, and portal hypertension and their impact on ACLF development remains unclear. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the interplay of cardiodynamic state and SI on fatal ACLF development in cirrhosis.
Results: At inclusion, hemodynamic measures including cardiac index (CI) and hepatic venous pressure gradient of 208 patients were measured. Patients were followed prospectively for fatal ACLF development (primary endpoint). SI was assessed by proinflammatory markers such as interleukins (ILs) 6 and 8 and soluble IL‐33 receptor (sIL‐33R). Patients were divided according to CI (<3.2; 3.2‐4.2; >4.2 L/min/m2) in hypo‐ (n = 84), normo‐ (n = 69) and hyperdynamic group (n = 55). After a median follow‐up of 3 years, the highest risk of fatal ACLF was seen in hyperdynamic (35%) and hypodynamic patients (25%) compared with normodynamic (14%) (P = .011). Hyperdynamic patients showed the highest rate of SI. The detectable level of IL‐6 was an independent predictor of fatal ACLF development.
Conclusions: Cirrhotic patients with hyperdynamic and hypodynamic circulation have a higher risk of fatal ACLF. Therefore, the cardiodynamic state is strongly associated with SI, which is an independent predictor of development of fatal ACLF.
Background and Aims: Activation of the inflammasome NLRP3 (NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain containing 3) contributes to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and progression to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Therefore, this study explored the therapeutic effects of a novel and selective NLRP3 antagonist in a murine dietary model of NASH. Methods: Groups of 12-week-old ApoE-/- mice were fed ad lib for 7 weeks with a methionine/choline deficient (MCD) and western diet (WD). After 3 weeks of diet-induced injury, mice were injected i. p. with the NLRP3 antagonist IFM-514 (100 mg/kg body weight) or vehicle (0.5% carmellose) every day, 5 days/week for a further 4 weeks. Several markers of inflammation, fibrosis and steatosis were evaluated. Whole transcriptome sequencing and panel RNA expression analysis (NanoString) were performed. Results: IFM-514 inhibited IL-1β production in mice challenged with 20 mg/kg lipopolysaccharide, and in mouse and human inflammatory cells in vitro. IFM-514 inhibited hepatic inflammation in the in vivo non-alcoholic steatohepatitis model assessed by H&E staining and in the hepatic gene expression of inflammasome-related proinflammatory cytokines. This effect was associated with significant reduction in caspase-1 activation. Similarly, IFM-514 was efficacious in vivo in MDC-fed ApoE-/- mice, markedly reducing portal pressure, Sirius red staining and 4-hydroxyproline content compared to vehicle-treated mice. Moreover, IFM-514 significantly reduced hepatic steatosis in MCD-fed ApoE-/- mice, as evidenced by NAFLD scores, oil red O staining, hepatic triglycerides and gene expression. In WD treated animals, similar trends in inflammation and fibrosis were observed, although not sufficient IFM-514 levels were reached. Conclusion: Overall, IFM-514 reduced liver inflammation and fibrosis, with mild effects on liver steatosis in experimental murine NASH. Blocking of NLRP3 may be an attractive therapeutic approach for NASH patients.
Baseline presence of NAFLD predicts weight loss after gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity

Background. Bariatric surgery is a widely used treatment for morbid obesity. Prediction of postoperative weight loss currently relies on prediction models, which mostly overestimate patients’ weight loss. Data about the influence of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on early postoperative weight loss are scarce. Methods. This prospective, single-center cohort study included 143 patients receiving laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery (One Anastomosis-Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB-MGB) or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB)). Liver biopsies were acquired at surgery. NAFLD activity score (NAS) assigned patients to “No NAFLD”, “NAFL” or “NASH”. Follow up data were collected at 3, 6 and 12 months. Results. In total, 49.7% of patients had NASH, while 41.3% had NAFL. Compared with the No NAFLD group, NAFL and NASH showed higher body-mass-index (BMI) at follow-up (6 months: 31.0 kg/m2 vs. 36.8 kg/m2 and 36.1 kg/m2, 12 months: 27.0 kg/m2 vs. 34.4 and 32.8 kg/m2) and lower percentage of total body weight loss (%TBWL): (6 months: 27.1% vs. 23.3% and 24.4%; 12 months: 38.5% vs. 30.1 and 32.6%). Linear regression of NAS points significantly predicts percentage of excessive weight loss (%EWL) after 6 months (Cologne-weight-loss-prediction-score). Conclusions. Histopathological presence of NAFLD might lead to inferior postoperative weight reduction after gastric bypass surgery. The mechanisms underlying this observation should be further studied.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is gaining in importance and is linked to obesity. Especially,thedevelopmentoffibrosisandportalhypertensioninNAFLDpatientsrequirestreatment. Transgenic TGR(mREN2)27 rats overexpressing mouse renin spontaneously develop NAFLD with portal hypertension but without obesity. This study investigated the additional role of obesity in this model on the development of portal hypertension and fibrosis. Obesity was induced in twelve-week old TGR(mREN2)27 rats after receiving Western diet (WD) for two or four weeks. Liver fibrosis was assessed using standard techniques. Hepatic expression of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), collagen type Iα1, α-smooth muscle actin, and the macrophage markers Emr1, as well as the chemoattractant Ccl2, interleukin-1β (IL1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) were analyzed. Assessment of portal and systemic hemodynamics was performed using the colored microsphere technique. Asexpected,WDinducedobesityandliverfibrosisasconfirmedbySiriusRedandOilRed O staining. The expression of the monocyte-macrophage markers, Emr1, Ccl2, IL1β and TNFα were increasedduringfeedingofWD,indicatinginfiltrationofmacrophagesintotheliver,eventhoughthis increase was statistically not significant for the EGF module-containing mucin-like receptor (Emr1) mRNA expression levels. Of note, portal pressure increased with the duration of WD compared to animals that received a normal chow. Besides obesity, WD feeding increased systemic vascular resistance reflecting systemic endothelial and splanchnic vascular dysfunction. We conclude that transgenic TGR(mREN2)27 rats are a suitable model to investigate NAFLD development with liver fibrosis and portal hypertension. Tendency towards elevated expression of Emr1 is associated with macrophage activity point to a significant role of macrophages in NAFLD pathogenesis, probably due to a shift of the renin–angiotensin system towards a higher activation of the classical pathway. The hepatic injury induced by WD in TGR(mREN2)27 rats is suitable to evaluate different stages of fibrosis and portal hypertension in NAFLD with obesity.
Prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing. Resulting fibrosis and portal hypertension, as a possible secondary event, may necessitate treatment. Overexpression of mouse renin in the transgenic rat model, TGR(mREN2)27, leads to spontaneous development of NAFLD. Therefore, we used TGR(mREN2)27 rats as a model of NAFLD where we hypothesized increased susceptibility and investigated fibrosis and portal hypertension and associated pathways. 12-week old TGR(mREN2)27 rats received either cholestatic (BDL) or toxic injury (CCl4 inhalation). Portal and systemic hemodynamic assessments were performed using microsphere technique with and without injection of the Janus-Kinase 2 (JAK2) inhibitor AG490 or the non-peptidic Ang(1-7) agonist, AVE0991. The extent of liver fibrosis was assessed in TGR(mREN2)27 and wild-type rats using standard techniques. Protein and mRNA levels of profibrotic, renin-angiotensin system components were assessed in liver and primary hepatic stellate cells (HSC) and hepatocytes. TGR(mREN2)27 rats developed spontaneous, but mild fibrosis and portal hypertension due to the activation of the JAK2/Arhgef1/ROCK pathway. AG490 decreased migration of HSC and portal pressure in isolated liver perfusions and in vivo. Fibrosis or portal hypertension after cholestatic (BDL) or toxic injury (CCl4) was not aggravated in TGR(mREN2)27 rats, probably due to decreased mouse renin expression in hepatocytes. Interestingly, portal hypertension was even blunted in TGR(mREN2)27 rats (with or without additional injury) by AVE0991. TGR(mREN2)27 rats are a suitable model of spontaneous liver fibrosis and portal hypertension but not with increased susceptibility to liver damage. After additional injury, the animals can be used to evaluate novel therapeutic strategies targeting Mas.
Purpose of the Review: This review aims to summarize the current knowledge of the extracellular matrix remodeling during hepatic fibrosis. We discuss the diverse interactions of the extracellular matrix with hepatic cells and the surrounding matrix in liver fibrosis, with the focus on the molecular pathways and the mechanisms that regulate extracellular matrix remodeling.
Recent Findings: The extracellular matrix not only provides structure and support for the cells, but also controls cell behavior by providing adhesion signals and by acting as a reservoir of growth factors and cytokines.
Summary: Hepatic fibrosis is characterized by an excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix. During fibrogenesis, the natural remodeling process of the extracellular matrix varies, resulting in the excessive accumulation of its components, mainly collagens. Signals released by the extracellular matrix induce the activation of hepatic stellate cells, which are the major source of extracellular matrix and most abundant myofibroblasts in the liver.
Im Gegensatz zu Adorno wird Walter Benjamins Theorie […] kaum mit Musik in Verbindung gebracht, sondern vor allem für ihr Bilddenken geschätzt. Auch wenn im Ursprung des Deutschen Trauerspiels, in den Erinnerungsszenen der Berliner Kindheit, den Häuser- und Gedankenschluchten der Passagenarbeit und nicht zuletzt in seinem Briefwechsel durchaus von Musik die Rede ist, rücken Klänge seltener in den Mittelpunkt seiner Schriften und sind in der Rezeption bisher auch weniger beachtet worden. Ohnedies wird derjenige enttäuscht, der gerade von Benjamin – so reizvoll es sein mag, sich solchen Gegenständen widmende Essays zu imaginieren – die Exegese des gängigen musikalischen Kanons erwartet: Keine Abhandlung zu Schuberts Streichquintett schließt an die Interpretation der Wahlverwandschaften an und ebenso vergeblich sucht man nach die Erwägungen zum Trauerspiel auf die Affektkontrolle der opera seria oder die des Kraus-Essays auf die Musik des Fackel-Habitués Arnold Schönberg übertragenden Arbeiten. Dennoch kommt Musik, Klage und Tönen in Benjamins Reflexionen eine nicht unerhebliche Bedeutung zu. Selten drängen sie sich lautstark in den Vordergrund, erlauben aber – zumal in einer Zeit, in der auch die professionelle Auseinandersetzung mit Musik die ideale Beständigkeit musikalischer Werke und ihrer Texte zunehmend in Zweifel zieht – theoretische Einsichten, über die das auf andere Dinge gerichtete Ohr des Experten achtlos hinweggeht. In Ergänzung zur wohlbekannten epistemischen und poetischen Rolle seiner Sprach- und Denkbilder unternimmt dieser Band den ersten systematisch angelegten Versuch, sowohl den kultur- und medienhistorischen Zusammenhängen von Benjamins akustischen Motiven nachzugehen als auch ihre ästhetische Relevanz für die gegenwärtige Produktion und Reproduktion von Klängen zu reflektieren.
Zwei Jahre nach dem Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs veröffentlichte der franko-amerikanische Historiker Jacques Barzun eine ideengeschichtliche Anatomie des 19. Jahrhunderts mit dem aufsehenerregenden Titel 'Darwin, Marx and Wagner'. Eine mit Absolutheitsanspruch verfochtene deterministische Weltsicht betrachtet sein Buch, dessen narrativen Ausgangspunkt die just ins Jahr der Vollendung der 'Tristan'-Partitur (1859) fallende Veröffentlichung von 'The Origin of Species' und der 'Kritik der politischen Ökonomie' bildet, als ein anhaltend problematisches Erbe der mit jenen drei "representatives of the dominant tradition" verbundenen Umwälzungen in den Künsten, Natur- und Sozialwissenschaften: "Their thought embraces the three great relations that cause us the deepest concern - science and religion, science and society, society and art - and it is from them that on these subjects we have learned what we most familiarly know." Gegen solchen von der weltgeschichtlichen Lage geprägten (liberalen) Skeptizismus kann zwar zum einen auf jene die "ewige Wiederkehr des Gleichen" progressiv durchbrechende Zielgerichtetheit verwiesen werden, die Wagners auf ein multilaterales "Ende" zulaufende Musikdramen mit dem Telos von Marx’ Gesellschafts- und Darwins Naturbeobachtung teilen. Aber auch diejenigen Kopplungen und ideengeschichtlichen Synergieeffekte, die sich in - sich neu formierenden - Problemzusammenhängen wie der (Musik-)Psychologie niederschlagen, lassen sich Barzuns düsterer Zeitgeistdiagnose entgegenstellen. Der vorliegende Aufsatz steht also nicht nur vor der bislang unbewältigten Aufgabe, das Werk eines bedeutenden Komponisten in den Kontext der Wissenschaftsgeschichte zu stellen. Zugleich geht es darum, gewöhnlich nicht ins Blickfeld der Musikwissenschaft fallende Textgattungen und Diskurse für die musikalische Analyse und Historiographie des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts fruchtbar zu machen.
Es sind weit mehr als jene sprichwörtlichen Siebensachen, die ein ghanaischer Oberschüler beim Eintritt in eines der zahlreichen Internate des Landes mitzubringen hat. Ein zuvor ausgehändigter "prospectus" verzeichnet so nützliche und notwendige Dinge wie Bügeleisen, Wassereimer, Buschmesser, Scheuerbürste, Schaumstoffmatratze und einiges andere mehr. Was die Bekleidung betrifft, so findet sich auf dieser Liste neben "white trousers for church service" und "khaki trousers" auch ein ausdrücklich mit dem Zusatz "school supply" versehenes "pair of khaki shorts": Bis heute identifizieren sich "school boys" in Ghana durch sowohl den klimatischen Bedingungen als auch einer impliziten sozialen Hierarchie genügende kurze Hosen, für die sich im informellen Idiom die Bezeichnung 'school knickers' durchgesetzt hat.
The macrophage-inducible C-type lectin (mincle) is part of the innate immune system and acts as a pattern recognition receptor for pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPS) and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Ligand binding induces mincle activation which consequently interacts with the signaling adapter Fc receptor, SYK, and NF-kappa-B. There is also evidence that mincle expressed on macrophages promotes intestinal barrier integrity. However, little is known about the role of mincle in hepatic fibrosis, especially in more advanced disease stages. Mincle expression was measured in human liver samples from cirrhotic patients and donors collected at liver transplantation and in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Human results were confirmed in rodent models of cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). In these models, the role of mincle was investigated in liver samples as well as in peripheral blood monocytes (PBMC), tissues from the kidney, spleen, small intestine, and heart. Additionally, mincle activation was stimulated in experimental non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) by treatment with mincle agonist trehalose-6,6-dibehenate (TDB). In human NASH, mincle is upregulated with increased collagen production. In ApoE deficient mice fed high-fat western diet (NASH model), mincle activation significantly increases hepatic collagen production. In human cirrhosis, mincle expression is also significantly upregulated. Furthermore, mincle expression is associated with the stage of chronic liver disease. This could be confirmed in rat models of cirrhosis and ACLF. ACLF was induced by LPS injection in cirrhotic rats. While mincle expression and downstream signaling via FC receptor gamma, SYK, and NF-kappa-B are upregulated in the liver, they are downregulated in PBMCs of these rats. Although mincle expressed on macrophages might be beneficial for intestinal barrier integrity, it seems to contribute to inflammation and fibrosis once the intestinal barrier becomes leaky in advanced stages of chronic liver disease.
Background and Aims: Monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) is a potent chemoattractant for monocytes. It is involved in pathogenesis of several inflammatory diseases. Hepatic MCP-1 is a readout of macrophage activation. While inflammation is a major driver of liver disease progression, the origin and role of circulating MCP-1 as a biomarker remains unclear.
Methods: Hepatic CC-chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) expression and F4/80 staining for Kupffer cells were measured and correlated in a mouse model of chronic liver disease (inhalative CCl4 for 7 weeks). Next, hepatic RNA levels of CCL2 were measured in explanted livers of 39 patients after transplantation and correlated with severity of disease. Changes in MCP-1 were further evaluated in a rat model of experimental cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). Finally, we analyzed portal and hepatic vein levels of MCP-1 in patients receiving transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt insertion for complications of portal hypertension.
Results: In this mouse model of fibrotic hepatitis, hepatic expression of CCL2 (P = 0.009) and the amount of F4/80 positive cells in the liver (P < 0.001) significantly increased after induction of hepatitis by CCl4 compared to control animals. Moreover, strong correlation of hepatic CCL2 expression and F4/80 positive cells were seen (P = 0.023). Furthermore, in human liver explants, hepatic transcription levels of CCL2 correlated with the MELD score of the patients, and thus disease severity (P = 0.007). The experimental model of ACLF in rats revealed significantly higher levels of MCP-1 plasma (P = 0.028) and correlation of hepatic CCL2 expression (R = 0.69, P = 0.003). Particularly, plasma MCP-1 levels did not correlate with peripheral blood monocyte CCL2 expression. Finally, higher levels of MCP-1 were observed in the hepatic compared to the portal vein (P = 0.01) in patients receiving TIPS. Similarly, a positive correlation of MCP-1 with Child-Pugh score was observed (P = 0.018). Further, in the presence of ACLF, portal and hepatic vein levels of MCP-1 were significantly higher compared to patients without ACLF (both P = 0.039).
Conclusion: Circulating levels of MCP-1 mainly derive from the injured liver and are associated with severity of liver disease. Therefore, liver macrophages contribute significantly to disease progression. Circulating MCP-1 may reflect the extent of hepatic macrophage activation.
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH) are the leading causes of liver disease worldwide. To identify disease-specific pathomechanisms, we analyzed the lipidome, metabolome and immune cell recruitment in livers in both diseases. Mice harboring ASH or NASH had comparable disease severities regarding mortality rate, neurological behavior, expression of fibrosis marker and albumin levels. Lipid droplet size was higher in NASH than ASH and qualitative differences in the lipidome were mainly based on incorporation of diet-specific fatty acids into triglycerides, phosphatidylcholines and lysophosphatidylcholines. Metabolomic analysis showed downregulated nucleoside levels in both models. Here, the corresponding uremic metabolites were only upregulated in NASH suggesting stronger cellular senescence, which was supported by lower antioxidant levels in NASH as compared to ASH. While altered urea cycle metabolites suggest increased nitric oxide synthesis in both models, in ASH, this depended on increased L-homoarginine levels indicating a cardiovascular response mechanism. Interestingly, only in NASH were the levels of tryptophan and its anti-inflammatory metabolite kynurenine upregulated. Fittingly, high-content immunohistochemistry showed a decreased macrophage recruitment and an increased polarization towards M2-like macrophages in NASH. In conclusion, with comparable disease severity in both models, higher lipid storage, oxidative stress and tryptophan/kynurenine levels were seen in NASH, leading to distinct immune responses.
Near equilibrium potential energy and dipole moment functions have been calculated for the electronic ground state of the XeH+ ion from highly correlated SCEP/CEPA electronic wavefunctions. The following spectroscopic constants for 132XeH+ are obtained: Re= 1.611 ± 0.005 Å, ωe = 2313 ± 50cm-1, ωexe = 41 ± 5cm-1 and D0(Xe+ + H) = 3.90 ± 0.1 eV.
Infrared transition dipole matrix elements and probability coefficients for 132XeH+ and 132XeD+ are given. The electric dipole moment functions of the protonated rare gas atoms HeH+ to XeH+ are discussed.
Mid-rapidity transverse mass spectra and multiplicity densities of charged and neutral kaons are reported for Au + Au collisions at √sNN = 130 GeV at RHIC. The spectra are exponential in transverse mass, with an inverse slope of about 280 MeV in central collisions. The multiplicity densities for these particles scale with the negative hadron pseudo-rapidity density. The charged kaon to pion ratios are K+/π− = 0.161± 0.002(stat) ± 0.024(syst) and K−/π− = 0.146± 0.002(stat) ± 0.022(syst) for the most central collisions. The K+/π− ratio is lower than the same ratio observed at the SPS while the K−/π− is higher than the SPS result. The ratios are enhanced by about 50% relative to p + p and p¯ + p collision data at similar energies.
Background: The prevalence of metabolic liver diseases is increasing and approved pharmacological treatments are still missing. Many animal models of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) show a full spectrum of fibrosis, inflammation and steatosis, which does not reflect the human situation since only up to one third of the patients develop fibrosis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Methods: Seven week old C57Bl/J mice were treated with ethanol, Western diet (WD) or both. The animals’ liver phenotypes were determined through histology, immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, hepatic triglyceride content and gene expression levels. In a human cohort of 80 patients stratified by current alcohol misuse and body mass index, liver histology and gene expression analysis were performed. Results: WD diet and ethanol-treated animals showed severe steatosis, with high hepatic triglyceride content and upregulation of fatty acid synthesis. Mild fibrosis was revealed using Sirius-red stains and gene expression levels of collagen. Inflammation was detected using histology, immunohistochemistry and upregulation of proinflammatory genes. The human cohort of obese drinkers showed similar upregulation in genes related to steatosis, fibrosis and inflammation. Conclusions: We provide a novel murine model for early-stage fatty liver disease suitable for drug testing and investigation of pathophysiology.
Background: Pathogenesis of portal hypertension is multifactorial and includes pathologic intrahepatic angiogenesis, whereby TIPS insertion is an effective therapy of portal hypertension associated complications. While angiogenin is a potent contributor to angiogenesis in general, little is known about its impact on TIPS function over time. Methods: In a total of 118 samples from 47 patients, angiogenin concentrations were measured in portal and inferior caval vein plasma at TIPS insertion (each blood compartment n = 23) or angiographic intervention after TIPS (each blood compartment n = 36) and its relationship with patient outcome was investigated. Results: Angiogenin levels in the inferior caval vein were significantly higher compared to the portal vein (P = 0.048). Ten to 14 days after TIPS, inferior caval vein angiogenin level correlated inversely with the portal systemic pressure gradient (P<0.001), measured invasively during control angiography. Moreover, patients with TIPS revision during this angiography, showed significantly lower angiogenin level in the inferior caval vein compared to patients without TIPS dysfunction (P = 0.01). Conclusion: In cirrhosis patients with complications of severe portal hypertension, circulating levels of angiogenin are derived from the injured liver. Moreover, angiogenin levels in the inferior caval vein after TIPS may predict TIPS dysfunction.

Previous work has found that many repetitions of a grating lead to increasing gamma-band synchronization. Here, we show in awake macaque area V1 that both repetition-related reductions in firing rate and increases in gamma are specific to the repeated stimulus. These effects show some persistence on the timescale of minutes. Gamma increases are specific to the presented stimulus location. Further, repetition effects on gamma and on firing rates generalize to images of natural objects. These findings support the notion that gamma-band synchronization subserves the adaptive processing of repeated stimulus encounters.

DNA methylation profiles of aggressive behavior may capture lifetime cumulative effects of genetic, stochastic, and environmental influences associated with aggression. Here, we report the first large meta-analysis of epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) of aggressive behavior (N = 15,324 participants). In peripheral blood samples of 14,434 participants from 18 cohorts with mean ages ranging from 7 to 68 years, 13 methylation sites were significantly associated with aggression (alpha = 1.2 × 10−7; Bonferroni correction). In cord blood samples of 2425 children from five cohorts with aggression assessed at mean ages ranging from 4 to 7 years, 83% of these sites showed the same direction of association with childhood aggression (r = 0.74, p = 0.006) but no epigenome-wide significant sites were found. Top-sites (48 at a false discovery rate of 5% in the peripheral blood meta-analysis or in a combined meta-analysis of peripheral blood and cord blood) have been associated with chemical exposures, smoking, cognition, metabolic traits, and genetic variation (mQTLs). Three genes whose expression levels were associated with top-sites were previously linked to schizophrenia and general risk tolerance. At six CpGs, DNA methylation variation in blood mirrors variation in the brain. On average 44% (range = 3–82%) of the aggression–methylation association was explained by current and former smoking and BMI. These findings point at loci that are sensitive to chemical exposures with potential implications for neuronal functions. We hope these results to be a starting point for studies leading to applications as peripheral biomarkers and to reveal causal relationships with aggression and related traits.
