Immersion freezing is the most relevant heterogeneous ice nucleation mechanism through which ice crystals are formed in mixed-phase clouds. In recent years, an increasing number of laboratory experiments utilizing a variety of instruments have examined immersion freezing activity of atmospherically relevant ice nucleating particles (INPs). However, an inter-comparison of these laboratory results is a difficult task because investigators have used different ice nucleation (IN) measurement methods to produce these results. A remaining challenge is to explore the sensitivity and accuracy of these techniques and to understand how the IN results are potentially influenced or biased by experimental parameters associated with these techniques.
Within the framework of INUIT (Ice Nucleation research UnIT), we distributed an illite rich sample (illite NX) as a representative surrogate for atmospheric mineral dust particles to investigators to perform immersion freezing experiments using different IN measurement methods and to obtain IN data as a function of particle concentration, temperature (T), cooling rate and nucleation time. Seventeen measurement methods were involved in the data inter-comparison. Experiments with seven instruments started with the test sample pre-suspended in water before cooling, while ten other instruments employed water vapor condensation onto dry-dispersed particles followed by immersion freezing. The resulting comprehensive immersion freezing dataset was evaluated using the ice nucleation active surface-site density (ns) to develop a representative ns(T) spectrum that spans a wide temperature range (−37 °C < T < −11 °C) and covers nine orders of magnitude in ns.
Our inter-comparison results revealed a discrepancy between suspension and dry-dispersed particle measurements for this mineral dust. While the agreement was good below ~ −26 °C, the ice nucleation activity, expressed in ns, was smaller for the wet suspended samples and higher for the dry-dispersed aerosol samples between about −26 and −18 °C. Only instruments making measurement techniques with wet suspended samples were able to measure ice nucleation above −18 °C. A possible explanation for the deviation between −26 and −18 °C is discussed. In general, the seventeen immersion freezing measurement techniques deviate, within the range of about 7 °C in terms of temperature, by three orders of magnitude with respect to ns. In addition, we show evidence that the immersion freezing efficiency (i.e., ns) of illite NX particles is relatively independent on droplet size, particle mass in suspension, particle size and cooling rate during freezing. A strong temperature-dependence and weak time- and size-dependence of immersion freezing efficiency of illite-rich clay mineral particles enabled the ns parameterization solely as a function of temperature. We also characterized the ns (T) spectra, and identified a section with a steep slope between −20 and −27 °C, where a large fraction of active sites of our test dust may trigger immersion freezing. This slope was followed by a region with a gentler slope at temperatures below −27 °C. A multiple exponential distribution fit is expressed as ns(T) = exp(23.82 × exp(−exp(0.16 × (T + 17.49))) + 1.39) based on the specific surface area and ns(T) = exp(25.75 × exp(−exp(0.13 × (T + 17.17))) + 3.34) based on the geometric area (ns and T in m−2 and °C, respectively). These new fits, constrained by using an identical reference samples, will help to compare IN measurement methods that are not included in the present study and, thereby, IN data from future IN instruments.
Immersion freezing is the most relevant heterogeneous ice nucleation mechanism through which ice crystals are formed in mixed-phase clouds. In recent years, an increasing number of laboratory experiments utilizing a variety of instruments have examined immersion freezing activity of atmospherically relevant ice-nucleating particles. However, an intercomparison of these laboratory results is a difficult task because investigators have used different ice nucleation (IN) measurement methods to produce these results. A remaining challenge is to explore the sensitivity and accuracy of these techniques and to understand how the IN results are potentially influenced or biased by experimental parameters associated with these techniques.
Within the framework of INUIT (Ice Nuclei Research Unit), we distributed an illite-rich sample (illite NX) as a representative surrogate for atmospheric mineral dust particles to investigators to perform immersion freezing experiments using different IN measurement methods and to obtain IN data as a function of particle concentration, temperature (T), cooling rate and nucleation time. A total of 17 measurement methods were involved in the data intercomparison. Experiments with seven instruments started with the test sample pre-suspended in water before cooling, while 10 other instruments employed water vapor condensation onto dry-dispersed particles followed by immersion freezing. The resulting comprehensive immersion freezing data set was evaluated using the ice nucleation active surface-site density, ns, to develop a representative ns(T) spectrum that spans a wide temperature range (−37 °C < T < −11 °C) and covers 9 orders of magnitude in ns.

While the agreement between different instruments was reasonable below ~ −27 °C, there seemed to be a different trend in the temperature-dependent ice nucleation activity from the suspension and dry-dispersed particle measurements for this mineral dust, in particular at higher temperatures. For instance, the ice nucleation activity expressed in ns was smaller for the average of the wet suspended samples and higher for the average of the dry-dispersed aerosol samples between about −27 and −18 °C. Only instruments making measurements with wet suspended samples were able to measure ice nucleation above −18 °C. A possible explanation for the deviation between −27 and −18 °C is discussed. Multiple exponential distribution fits in both linear and log space for both specific surface area-based ns(T) and geometric surface area-based ns(T) are provided. These new fits, constrained by using identical reference samples, will help to compare IN measurement methods that are not included in the present study and IN data from future IN instruments.

RP1 (synonym: MAPRE2, EB2) is a member of the microtubule binding EB1 protein family, which interacts with APC, a key regulatory molecule in the Wnt signalling pathway. While the other EB1 proteins are well characterized the cellular function and regulation of RP1 remain speculative to date. However, recently RP1 has been implicated in pancreatic cancerogenesis. CK2 is a pleiotropic kinase involved in adhesion, proliferation and anti-apoptosis. Overexpression of protein kinase CK2 is a hallmark of many cancers and supports the malignant phenotype of tumor cells. In this study we investigate the interaction of protein kinase CK2 with RP1 and demonstrate that CK2 phosphorylates RP1 at Ser236 in vitro. Stable RP1 expression in cell lines leads to a significant cleavage and down-regulation of N-cadherin and impaired adhesion. Cells expressing a Phospho-mimicking point mutant RP1-ASP236 show a marked decrease of adhesion to endothelial cells under shear stress. Inversely, we found that the cells under shear stress downregulate endogenous RP1, most likely to improve cellular adhesion. Accordingly, when RP1 expression is suppressed by shRNA, cells lacking RP1 display significantly increased cell adherence to surfaces. In summary, RP1 phosphorylation at Ser236 by CK2 seems to play a significant role in cell adhesion and might initiate new insights in the CK2 and EB1 family protein association.
Elementar für eine zukunftsfähige Verkehrsplanung ist eine möglichst detaillierte Kenntnis des Mobilitätsverhaltens der Bevölkerung in der Region. Zur Analyse des Mobilitätsverhaltens der Bevölkerung in Deutschland wurden in der Vergangenheit auf verschiedenen räumlichen Ebenen mehrere größtenteils voneinander unabhängige Datenerhebungen durchgeführt. Für die Region Frankfurt Rhein-Main besonders relevant sind dabei zum einen die Längsschnitt- bzw. Panelerhebungen des „Rhein-Main-Panels“ (RMP) und des „Deutschen Mobilitätspanels“ (MOP), zum anderen die Querschnittserhebungen der Befragung „Mobilität in Deutschland“ (MiD) und speziell für Frankfurt auch „Mobilität in Städten – SrV“ (SrV).
Ziel dieser Publikation ist es, diese vier unterschiedlichen Erhebungen in einem kurzen Vergleich vorzustellen. Dabei sollen die jeweiligen spezifischen Potentiale, aber auch Einschränkungen aufgezeigt werden, die diese Mobilitätsdatensätze bezüglich der Auswertung und weiteren Nutzung aufweisen. Danach werden in knapper Form mögliche Kombinationsmöglichkeiten dieser Datensätze untereinander, aber auch mit ergänzenden Datenbeständen dargestellt. Anschließend werden die aus den verschiedenen Mobilitätsdatensätzen ermittelten zentralen regionalen Mobilitätskennziffern in einem Vergleich veranschaulicht. Als Abschluss soll schließlich ein kurzer Blick auf mögliche Anwendungsfelder der Mobilitätsdaten in Politik und Planung geworfen werden.

Der landschaftlich reizvolle Überschwemmungsbereich zwischen Schollene und Havelberg lässt aufgrund der naturräumlichen Ausstattung eine artenreiche Wirbellosenfauna vermuten. Leider sind bis heute für bestimmte Arten kaum Angaben zu Vorkommen bekannt. Historische Quellen existieren so gut wie nicht; wenn doch, so wurden zumeist nur Zufallsbeobachtungen dokumentiert. Nachdem 1989 von B. Heinze in Havelberg eine entomologische Fachgruppe gegründet wurde, war ein kleiner Aufschwung im Kenntnisstand zu verzeichnen. Nicht unwesentlich trägt auch die von ihm initiierte Schriftenreihe "Untere Havel - Naturkundliche Berichte" zur Erweiterung des Wissensstandes bei. Ansonsten finden sich nur vereinzelt faunistische Arbeiten aus dem Gebiet, so sei u.a. Spitzenberg erwähnt, der die aquatilen Coleopteren des NSG "Schollener See" untersuchte. Dabei konnten neben einer Vielzahl anderer Arten als bemerkenswerte Vertreter die beiden Kolbenwasserkäferarten Hydrous aterrimus und H. piceus gefunden werden.
In 2006, the Task Force of the European Society of Cardiology published its consensus document on the use of autologous cell therapy for repair of the heart. Since then, there have been numerous clinical trials and analyses performed to establish the role of autologous cell therapy in the treatment of both acute and chronic cardiac disease. The majority of these studies have been Phase II clinical trials. Phase III clinical trials of autologous cell therapy have been launched (e.g. BAMI), which marks the successful progression of clinical investigation of autologous cell therapy in heart disease. The Task Force has reviewed its 2006 recommendations and the developments in this area of research and proposes updated recommendations for the future of autologous cell therapy in the heart. This article does not duplicate the many reviews on stem cells and the heart but gives considered recommendations based on the experience from the last 10 years.
Genetic code expansion facilitates position‐selective labeling of rna for biophysical studies

Nature relies on reading and synthesizing the genetic code with high fidelity. Nucleic acid building blocks that are orthogonal to the canonical A‐T and G‐C base‐pairs are therefore uniquely suitable to facilitate position‐specific labeling of nucleic acids. Here, we employ the orthogonal kappa‐xanthosine‐base‐pair for in vitro transcription of labeled RNA. We devised an improved synthetic route to obtain the phosphoramidite of the deoxy‐version of the kappa nucleoside in solid phase synthesis. From this DNA template, we demonstrate the reliable incorporation of xanthosine during in vitro transcription. Using NMR spectroscopy, we show that xanthosine introduces only minor structural changes in an RNA helix. We furthermore synthesized a clickable 7‐deaza‐xanthosine, which allows to site‐specifically modify transcribed RNA molecules with fluorophores or other labels.
Die Mauser- und Überwinterungsgebiete der süddeutschen Brutvögel des Großen Brachvogels liegen an der Atlantikküste Frankreichs und der Iberischen Halbinsel, individuelle Unterschiede sowie Populationsunterschiede sind jedoch nicht bekannt. Daher wurde in einem Pilotversuch am 20. Mai 2008 ein brütendes Weibchen in einem Brutgebiet am badischen Oberrhein mit einem Satellitensender versehen. Das Weibchen zog am 8. Juni 2008 vermutlich in einem Direktflug von 1020 km in west-süd-westlicher Richtung an die kantabrische Atlantikküste. Signale wurden bis zum 9. Oktober 2008 empfangen.
Denisovite is a rare mineral occurring as aggregates of fibres typically 200–500 nm diameter. It was confirmed as a new mineral in 1984, but important facts about its chemical formula, lattice parameters, symmetry and structure have remained incompletely known since then. Recently obtained results from studies using microprobe analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), electron crystallography, modelling and Rietveld refinement will be reported. The electron crystallography methods include transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), high-angle annular dark-field imaging (HAADF), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), precession electron diffraction (PED) and electron diffraction tomography (EDT). A structural model of denisovite was developed from HAADF images and later completed on the basis of quasi-kinematic EDT data by ab initio structure solution using direct methods and least-squares refinement. The model was confirmed by Rietveld refinement. The lattice parameters are a = 31.024 (1), b = 19.554 (1) and c = 7.1441 (5) Å, β = 95.99 (3)°, V = 4310.1 (5) Å3 and space group P12/a1. The structure consists of three topologically distinct dreier silicate chains, viz. two xonotlite-like dreier double chains, [Si6O17]10−, and a tubular loop-branched dreier triple chain, [Si12O30]12−. The silicate chains occur between three walls of edge-sharing (Ca,Na) octahedra. The chains of silicate tetrahedra and the octahedra walls extend parallel to the z axis and form a layer parallel to (100). Water molecules and K+ cations are located at the centre of the tubular silicate chain. The latter also occupy positions close to the centres of eight-membered rings in the silicate chains. The silicate chains are geometrically constrained by neighbouring octahedra walls and present an ambiguity with respect to their z position along these walls, with displacements between neighbouring layers being either Δz = c/4 or −c/4. Such behaviour is typical for polytypic sequences and leads to disorder along [100]. In fact, the diffraction pattern does not show any sharp reflections with l odd, but continuous diffuse streaks parallel to a* instead. Only reflections with l even are sharp. The diffuse scattering is caused by (100) nanolamellae separated by stacking faults and twin boundaries. The structure can be described according to the order–disorder (OD) theory as a stacking of layers parallel to (100).
