A checklist of the world species of Limnichidae (35 genera, 345 species) and Lutrochidae (1 genus, 11 species) is presented. The author, year of publication and page number, synonyms, distribution by country, and a terminal bibliography are given for each genus and species. Biological information is also reviewed.
Two new species collected in northwestern Venezuela, Macrelmis milleri aneI M. hayelwe, are described and illustrated by line drawings and scanning electron micrographs. Both species are assigned to the new species group Macrelmis milleri, and characters of the new species group are described. A key to the species of the group is given.
The new genus and species, Caenelmis octomeria, belonging to the Elmidae and subfamily Elminae, are described. Character states used for recognition of the new genus are illustrated by line drawings and scanning electron micrographs. The 8-segmented antenna of the new genus will readily distinguish it from the other 25 elmid genera knownfrom Africa.
Four new species and three new genera of stygobiontic beetles are described: Dytiscidae: Siamoporus deharvengi, new genus, new species from Thailand; Sinodytes hubbardi, new genus, new species, hom China; Noteridae: Speonotenus bedosae, new genus, new species, from Indonesia; Elmidae: Neoelmis sketi, new species, from Ecuador. All of the taxa were collected from aquatic habitats in caves and bring the total known stygobiontic beetles to 23 species, 1 subspecies, and 20 genera, in 5 families. A list of the described stygobiontic beetles is included. Line drawings and/or micrographs illustrate the taxa and a map shows the type localities.
A new tribe is established in the Limnichidae, Limnichinae, for a new genus and species, Wooldridge us perforatus, from Sabah, Malaysia. Two autapomorphic characters distinguish Wooldridgeini from the two other tribes ofthe subfamily Limnichinae; 1) the mesotarsus and metatarsus join their respective tibia ventrally (medially) and preapically instead of the usual apical only connection and 2) a large pore, presumed to be an opening of a prothoracic gland, is present on each hypomeron. Distinguishing characters are illustrated by scanning electron micrographs and line drawings. A key to the three tribes included in the Limnichinae is provided.
A new genus and species of stygobiontic bidessine dytiscid beetle, Comaldessus stygius, from Comal Springs, Texas, is described and compared with the proposed sister epigean genus Uuarus and the only other known stygobiontic bidessine water beetles, Trogloguignotus concii Sanfilippo from Venezuela and Uvarus chappuisi (Peschet) from Africa. Distinctive characters of the adult are illustrated with pen and ink drawings and scanning electron micrographs. The new taxon is the second stygobiontic bidessine genus with rudimentary eyes known from the Western Hemisphere and the first known from North America.
