Using a sample of 106 million 𝜓(3686) decays, 𝜓(3686)→𝛾𝜒𝑐𝐽(𝐽=0,1,2) and 𝜓(3686)→𝛾𝜒𝑐𝐽,𝜒𝑐𝐽→𝛾𝐽/𝜓(𝐽=1,2) events are utilized to study inclusive 𝜒𝑐𝐽→anything, 𝜒𝑐𝐽→hadrons, and 𝐽/𝜓→anything distributions, including distributions of the number of charged tracks, electromagnetic calorimeter showers, and 𝜋0s, and to compare them with distributions obtained from the BESIII Monte Carlo simulation. Information from each Monte Carlo simulated decay event is used to construct matrices connecting the detected distributions to the input predetection “produced” distributions. Assuming these matrices also apply to data, they are used to predict the analogous produced distributions of the decay events. Using these, the charged particle multiplicities are compared with results from MARK I. Further, comparison of the distributions of the number of photons in data with those in Monte Carlo simulation indicates that G-parity conservation should be taken into consideration in the simulation.
We report an amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of D+s→K+K−π+ decay using a data sample of 3.19 fb−1 recorded with BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 4.178 GeV.
We perform a model-independent partial wave analysis in the low K+K− mass region to determine the K+K− S-wave lineshape, followed by an amplitude analysis of our very pure high-statistics sample.
The amplitude analysis provides an accurate determination of the detection efficiency allowing us to measure the branching fraction B(D+s→K+K−π+)=(5.47±0.08stat±0.13sys)%.
Using 2.93 fb−1 of 𝑒+𝑒− annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy √𝑠=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we search for the semileptonic 𝐷0(+) decays into a 𝑏1(1235)−(0) axial-vector meson for the first time. No significant signal is observed for either charge combination. The upper limits on the product branching fractions are ℬ𝐷0→𝑏1(1235)−𝑒+𝜈𝑒·ℬ𝑏1(1235) −→ 𝜔𝜋−<1.12×10−4 and ℬ𝐷+→𝑏1(1235)0𝑒+𝜈𝑒·ℬ𝑏1(1235)0→𝜔𝜋0<1.75×10−4 at the 90% confidence level.
We search for the process e+e−→π+π−χcJ (J=0,1,2) and for a charged charmonium-like state in the π±χcJ subsystem. The search uses data sets collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies between 4.18 GeV and 4.60 GeV. No significant π+π−χcJ signals are observed at any center-of-mass energy, and thus upper limits are provided which also serve as limits for a possible charmonium-like structure in the invariant π±χcJ mass.
The rare decay 𝜂′→𝜋+𝜋−𝑒+𝑒− is studied using a sample of 1.3×109 𝐽/𝜓 events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII in 2009 and 2012. The branching fraction is measured with improved precision to be (2.42±0.05stat±0.08syst)×10−3. Due to the inclusion of new data, this result supersedes the last BESIII result on this branching fraction. In addition, the 𝐶𝑃-violating asymmetry in the angle between the decay planes of the 𝜋+𝜋−-pair and the 𝑒+𝑒−-pair is investigated. A measurable value would indicate physics beyond the standard model; the result is 𝒜𝐶𝑃=(2.9±3.7stat±1.1syst)%, which is consistent with the standard model expectation of no 𝐶𝑃-violation. The precision is comparable to the asymmetry measurement in the 𝐾0𝐿→𝜋+𝜋−𝑒+𝑒− decay where the observed (14±2)% effect is driven by a standard model mechanism.
Observation of a near-threshold structure in the K⁺ recoil-mass spectra in e⁺e⁻ → K⁺(Dₛ⁻D*⁰+Dₛ*⁻D⁰)
(2021)
We report a study of the processes of 𝑒+𝑒−→𝐾+𝐷−𝑠𝐷*0 and 𝐾+𝐷*−𝑠𝐷0 based on 𝑒+𝑒− annihilation samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII at five center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.628 to 4.698 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb−1. An excess of events over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the 𝐷−𝑠𝐷*0 and 𝐷*−𝑠𝐷0 mass thresholds in the 𝐾+ recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at √𝑠=4.681 GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as (3982.5+1.8
−2.6±2.1) MeV/𝑐2 and (12.8+5.3−4.4±3.0) MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 𝜎 over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate for a charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into 𝐷−𝑠𝐷*0 and 𝐷*−𝑠𝐷0. However, the properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.
We report a study of the processes of e+e−→K+(D−sD∗0+D∗−sD0) based on e+e− annihilation samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at BEPCII at five center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.628 to 4.698 GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 3.7 fb−1. An excess over the known contributions of the conventional charmed mesons is observed near the D−sD∗0 and D∗−sD0 mass thresholds in the K+ recoil-mass spectrum for events collected at s√=4.681 GeV. The structure matches a mass-dependent-width Breit-Wigner line shape, whose pole mass and width are determined as (3982.5+1.8−2.6±2.1) MeV/c2 and (12.8+5.3−4.4±3.0) MeV, respectively. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 σ over the pure contributions from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate of the charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into D−sD∗0 and D∗−sD0. However, the genuine properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.
Using e+e− collision data samples with center-of-mass energies ranging from 2.000 to 2.644 GeV, collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, and with a total integrated luminosity of 300 pb^{-1}, a partial-wave analysis is performed for the process e+e−→K+K−π0π0. The total Born cross sections for the process e+e−→K+K−π0π0, as well as the Born cross sections f or the subprocesses e+e−→ϕπ0π0, K+(1460)K−, K+1(1400)K−, K+1(1270)K− and K∗+(892)K∗−(892), are measured versus the center-of-mass energy. The corresponding results for e+e−→K+K−π0π0 and ϕπ0π0 are consistent with those of BaBar and have much improved this http URL analyzing the cross sections for the four subprocesses, K+(1460)K−, K+1(1400)K−, K+1(1270)K− and K∗+K∗−, a structure with mass M = (2126.5 ± 16.8 ± 12.4)~MeV/c^{2} and width Γ = (106.9 ± 32.1 ± 28.1)~MeV is observed with an overall statistical significance of 6.3 σ, although with very limited significance in the subprocesses e+e−→K+1(1270)K− and K∗+(892)K∗−(892). The resonant parameters of the observed structure suggest it can be identified with the ϕ(2170), thus the results provide valuable input to the internal nature of the ϕ(2170).
The first experimental information on the strong interaction between Λ and Ξ− strange baryons is presented in this Letter. The correlation function of Λ−Ξ− and Λ¯¯¯¯−Ξ¯¯¯¯+ pairs produced in high-multiplicity proton-proton (pp) collisions at s√ = 13 TeV at the LHC is measured as a function of the relative momentum of the pair. The femtoscopy method is used to calculate the correlation function, which is then compared with theoretical expectations obtained using a meson exchange model, chiral effective field theory, and Lattice QCD calculations close to the physical point. Data support predictions of small scattering parameters while discarding versions with large ones, thus suggesting a weak Λ−Ξ− interaction. The limited statistical significance of the data does not yet allow one to constrain the effects of coupled channels like Σ−Ξ and N−Ω.
Measurements of the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the collision plane defined by the spectator neutrons v2{ΨSP} in collisions of Pb ions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair sNN=2.76 TeV and Xe ions at sNN=5.44 TeV are reported. The results are presented for charged particles produced at midrapidity as a function of centrality and transverse momentum for the 5–70% and 0.2–6 GeV/c ranges, respectively. The ratio between v2{ΨSP} and the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the participant plane v2{4}, estimated using four-particle correlations, deviates by up to 20% from unity depending on centrality. This observation differs strongly from the magnitude of the corresponding eccentricity ratios predicted by the TRENTo and the elliptic power models of initial state fluctuations that are tuned to describe the participant plane anisotropies. The differences can be interpreted as a decorrelation of the neutron spectator plane and the reaction plane because of fragmentation of the remnants from the colliding nuclei, which points to an incompleteness of current models describing the initial state fluctuations. A significant transverse momentum dependence of the ratio v2{ΨSP}/v2{4} is observed in all but the most central collisions, which may help to understand whether momentum anisotropies at low and intermediate transverse momentum have a common origin in initial state fluctuations. The ratios of v2{ΨSP} and v2{4} to the corresponding initial state eccentricities for Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions at similar initial entropy density show a difference of (7.0±0.9)% with an additional variation of +1.8% when including RHIC data in the TRENTo parameter extraction. These observations provide new experimental constraints for viscous effects in the hydrodynamic modeling of the expanding quark–gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC.
The production yields of non-prompt Ds+ mesons, namely Ds+ mesons from beauty-hadron decays, were measured for the first time as a function of the transverse momentum (pT) at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in central and semi-central Pb−Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN−−−√=5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The Ds+ mesons and their charge conjugates were reconstructed from the hadronic decay channel Ds+→ϕπ+, with ϕ→K−K+, in the 4<pT<36 GeV/c and 2<pT<24 GeV/c intervals for the 0−10% and 30−50% centrality classes, respectively. The measured yields of non-prompt Ds+ mesons are compared to those of prompt Ds+ and non-prompt D0 mesons by calculating the ratios of the production yields in Pb−Pb collisions and the nuclear modification factor RAA. The ratio between the RAA of non-prompt Ds+ and prompt Ds+ mesons, and that between the RAA of non-prompt Ds+ and non-prompt D0 mesons in central Pb−Pb collisions are found to be on average higher than unity in the 4<pT<12 GeV/c interval with a statistical significance of about 1.6σ and 1.7σ, respectively. The measured RAA ratios are compared with the predictions of theoretical models of heavy-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding QGP that incorporate hadronisation via quark recombination.
This letter reports measurements which characterize the underlying event associated with hard scatterings at mid-pseudorapidity (|η|<0.8) in pp, p−Pb and Pb−Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair, sNN−−−√=5.02 TeV. The measurements are performed with ALICE at the LHC. Different multiplicity classes are defined based on the event activity measured at forward rapidities. The hard scatterings are identified by the leading particle defined as the charged particle with the largest transverse momentum (pT) in the collision and having 8<pT<15 GeV/c. The pT spectra of associated particles (0.5≤pT<6 GeV/c) are measured in different azimuthal regions defined with respect to the leading particle direction: toward, transverse, and away. The associated charged particle yields in the transverse region are subtracted from those of the away and toward regions. The remaining jet-like yields are reported as a function of the multiplicity measured in the transverse region. The measurements show a suppression of the jet-like yield in the away region and an enhancement of high-pT associated particles in the toward region in central Pb−Pb collisions, as compared to minimum-bias pp collisions. These observations are consistent with previous measurements that used two-particle correlations, and with an interpretation in terms of parton energy loss in a high-density quark gluon plasma. These yield modifications vanish in peripheral Pb−Pb collisions and are not observed in either high-multiplicity pp or p−Pb collisions.

In particle collider experiments, elementary particle interactions with large momentum transfer produce quarks and gluons (known as partons) whose evolution is governed by the strong force, as described by the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). These partons subsequently emit further partons in a process that can be described as a parton shower which culminates in the formation of detectable hadrons. Studying the pattern of the parton shower is one of the key experimental tools for testing QCD. This pattern is expected to depend on the mass of the initiating parton, through a phenomenon known as the dead-cone effect, which predicts a suppression of the gluon spectrum emitted by a heavy quark of mass mQ and energy E, within a cone of angular size mQ/E around the emitter. Previously, a direct observation of the dead-cone effect in QCD had not been possible, owing to the challenge of reconstructing the cascading quarks and gluons from the experimentally accessible hadrons. We report the direct observation of the QCD dead cone by using new iterative declustering techniques to reconstruct the parton shower of charm quarks. This result confirms a fundamental feature of QCD. Furthermore, the measurement of a dead-cone angle constitutes a direct experimental observation of the non-zero mass of the charm quark, which is a fundamental constant in the standard model of particle physics.
At particle collider experiments, elementary particle interactions with large momentum transfer produce quarks and gluons (known as partons) whose evolution is governed by the strong force, as described by the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The vacuum is not transparent to the partons and induces gluon radiation and quark pair production in a process that can be described as a parton shower. Studying the pattern of the parton shower is one of the key experimental tools in understanding the properties of QCD. This pattern is expected to depend on the mass of the initiating parton, through a phenomenon known as the dead-cone effect, which predicts a suppression of the gluon spectrum emitted by a heavy quark of mass m and energy E, within a cone of angular size m/E around the emitter. A direct observation of the dead-cone effect in QCD has not been possible until now, due to the challenge of reconstructing the cascading quarks and gluons from the experimentally accessible bound hadronic states. We report the first direct observation of the QCD dead-cone by using new iterative declustering techniques to reconstruct the parton shower of charm quarks. This result confirms a fundamental feature of QCD, which is derived more generally from its origin as a gauge quantum field theory. Furthermore, the measurement of a dead-cone angle constitutes a direct experimental observation of the non-zero mass of the charm quark, which is a fundamental constant in the standard model of particle physics.
Using a sample of 1.31×109 𝐽/𝜓 events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a study of 𝐽/𝜓→𝛾𝜂𝜂𝜂′ to search for the 𝑋(2370) and 𝜂𝑐 in the 𝜂𝜂𝜂′ invariant mass distribution. No significant signal for the 𝑋(2370) is observed, and we set an upper limit for the product branching fraction of ℬ(𝐽/𝜓→𝛾𝑋(2370)·ℬ(𝑋(2370)→𝜂𝜂𝜂′)<9.2×10−6 at the 90% confidence level. A clear 𝜂𝑐 signal is observed for the first time, yielding a product branching fraction of ℬ(𝐽/𝜓→𝛾𝜂𝑐)·ℬ(𝜂𝑐→𝜂𝜂𝜂′)=(4.86±0.62(stat)±0.45(sys))×10−5.
Search for the reaction channel e⁺e⁻ → ηcηπ⁺π⁻ at center-of-mass energies from 4.23 to 4.60 GeV
(2021)
Using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, we search for the process 𝑒+𝑒−→𝜂𝑐𝜂𝜋+𝜋−. The search is performed using five large datasets recorded at center-of-mass energies of 4.23, 4.26, 4.36, 4.42, and 4.60 GeV. The 𝜂𝑐 meson is reconstructed in 16 exclusive decay modes. No signal is observed in the 𝜂𝑐 mass region at any center-of-mass energy. The upper limits on the reaction cross sections are determined to be 6.2, 10.8, 27.6, 22.6 and 23.7 pb at the 90% confidence level at the center-of-mass energies listed above.

(2021)
Using (1310.6±7.0)×106 𝐽/𝜓 events acquired with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage rings, the decay 𝜂′→𝜋+𝜋−𝜇+𝜇− is observed for the first time with a significance of 8𝜎 via the process 𝐽/𝜓→𝛾𝜂′. We measure the branching fraction of 𝜂′→𝜋+𝜋−𝜇+𝜇− to be ℬ(𝜂′→𝜋+𝜋−𝜇+𝜇−)=(1.97±0.33(stat)±0.19(syst))×10−5, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively
Using an 𝑒+𝑒− collision data sample of 2.93 fb−1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV by the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we report the observation of 𝐷0→𝑎0(980)−𝑒+𝜈𝑒 and evidence for 𝐷+→𝑎0(980)0𝑒+𝜈𝑒 with significances of 6.4𝜎 and 2.9𝜎, respectively. The absolute branching fractions are determined to be ℬ(𝐷0→𝑎0(980)−𝑒+𝜈𝑒)×ℬ(𝑎0(980)−→𝜂𝜋−) = [1.33+0.33−0.29(stat)±0.09(syst)]×10−4 and ℬ(𝐷+→𝑎0(980)0𝑒+𝜈𝑒)×ℬ(𝑎0(980)0→𝜂𝜋0)=[1.66+0.81
−0.66(stat)±0.11(syst)]×10−4. This is the first time the 𝑎0(980) meson has been measured in a 𝐷0 semileptonic decay, which would open one more interesting page in the investigation of the nature of the puzzling 𝑎0(980) states.
The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The significance of the resonance hypothesis is estimated to be 5.3 σ over the contributions only from the conventional charmed mesons. This is the first candidate of the charged hidden-charm tetraquark with strangeness, decaying into D−sD∗0 and D∗−sD0. However, the properties of the excess need further exploration with more statistics.
