In this paper we test previous claims concerning the universality of patterns of polysemy and semantic change in perception verbs. Implicit in such claims are two elements: firstly, that the sharing of two related senses A and B by a given form is cross-linguistically widespread, and matched by a complementary lack of some rival polysemy, and secondly that the explanation for the ubiquity of a given pattern of polysemy is ultimately rooted in our shared human cognitive make-up. However, in comparison to the vigorous testing of claimed universals that has occurred in phonology, syntax and even basic lexical meaning, there has been little attempt to test proposed universals of semantic extension against a detailed areal study of non-European languages. To address this problem we examine a broad range of Australian languages to evaluate two hypothesized universals: one by Viberg (1984), concerning patterns of semantic extension across sensory modalities within the domain of perception verbs (i .e. intra-field extensions), and the other by Sweetser (1990), concerning the mapping of perception to cognition (i.e. trans-field extensions). Testing against the Australian data allows one claimed universal to survive, but demolishes the other, even though both assign primacy to vision among the senses.
Gegenstand des vorliegenden Beitrags ist der Zusammenhang der beiden Bereiche Sprache und außersprachliches Begriffssystem: Wie sind sprachliche und konzeptuelle Module verknüpft, und wie lässt sich ihr Zusammenhang theoretisch erfassen? Ich skizziere zwei alternative Ansätze zur Modellierung dieser Schnittstelle: das „Zwei-Ebenen-Modell“ und das Modell der „Conceptual Semantics“. Vor dem Hintergrund der beiden Ansätze diskutiere ich die Notwendigkeit eines vom konzeptuellen unterschiedenen „semantischen“ Systems, das sprachliche Aspekte der Bedeutung erfasst. Ich entwickele auf dieser Basis ein Modell, in dem die semantische Ebene als integrierter Teil des konzeptuellen Systems CS definiert ist: Semantische Repräsentationen werden durch einen Filter über CS generiert; sie etablieren eine Schnittstellen-Ebene, die CSElemente sprachlichen Strukturen zugänglich macht. Das Modell, das als Elaboration des „Tripartite Parallel Architecture“-Modells (Jackendoff 1997) verstanden werden kann, differenziert sprachliche und nicht-sprachliche Bedeutungsaspekte innerhalb eines komplexen Moduls (“2 in 1”-Ansatz).
Im Rahmen philosophisch-mathematischer Ansätze steht häufig der kardinale Aspekt natürlicher Zahlen im Vordergrund, auf den sprachlich mit Kardinal-Konstruktionen („sieben Zwerge“) referiert wird. Zahlen werden jedoch nicht nur in solchen quantitativen, sondern auch in ordinalen („der dritte Mann“) oder nominalen Kontexten („Bus Nr.129“) gebraucht. Bei einer umfassenden Analyse des Zahlkonzepts sind daher auch diese Komponenten zu berücksichtigen.
Ich werde im folgenden einige Überlegungen zur konzeptuellen und semantischen Struktur von Numeralkonstruktionen im Deutschen anstellen, in deren Rahmen ich sowohl die Repräsentation von Zahlen und die Modellierung von Numeralkonstruktionen diskutieren als auch einige Aspekte der Schnittstelle Syntax-Semantik erhellen will. Ich führe meine Untersuchung im Rahmen des „Zwei-Ebenen-Modells“ der Semantik durch (vgl. Bierwisch 1983;1987;1988; Lang 1987; Zimmermann 1987; 1992), nehme also neben dem semantischen System SEM ein autonomes konzeptuelles System CS an, das „die mentale Form dessen, was durch sprachliche Äußerungen wiedergegeben wird, [determiniert]“ (Bierwisch 1987:6).
Is language the key to number? This article argues that the human language faculty provides the cognitive equipment that enables humans to develop a systematic number concept. Crucially, this concept is based on non-iconic representations that involve relations between relations: relations between numbers are linked with relations between objects. In contrast to this, language-independent numerosity concepts provide only iconic representations. The pattern of forming relations between relations lies at the heart of our language faculty, suggesting that it is language that enables humans to make the step from these iconic representations, which we share with other species, to a generalised concept of number.
A cognição pode ser definida como um processo de aquisição de conhecimento que tem como material a informação do meio em que vivemos e o que já está registrado na nossa memória. Este processo envolve percepção, atenção, memória e ação, e nem sempre acontece de forma consciente. Mais do que simplesmente a aquisição de conhecimento, é um processo de conversão de tudo o que é captado pelo aprendiz de acordo com sua identidade e suas experiências. Com base nesse conceito, propõe-se um modelo teórico para o processamento cognitivo relacionado à produção em língua estrangeira, fundamentado em teorias recentes da neurociência sobre memória, aprendizagem e processamento de representações de seqüências freqüentes na língua (chunks) e ilustrado com dados referentes ao alemão como língua estrangeira. Como resultado, nota-se que o conhecimento teórico sobre a língua estrangeira e a capacidade de utilizá-la são habilidades complementares que interagem na aprendizagem da mesma, mas como saberes distintos, e não estágios do mesmo conhecimento determinados pelo tempo de aprendizagem ou armazenamento na memória, como sugerem alguns teóricos da área.
The aim of this article is to explore semantic relations within somatic phraseology using concepts from cognitive linguistics and prototype theory. The typicality or atypicality of representatives of the category of somatic phraseologisms is determined on the basis of 12 features of idiom irregularity according to Dobrovoľskij. The analysis results in a table of "good" and "bad" representatives of the category. Individual parameters are evaluated, but the value of individual criteria is also considered. This method makes it possible to determine the status of individual somatic phraseologisms with regard to each other, as well as the entire group of somatisms against other phraseologisms. The results enable conclusions to be drawn regarding the degree of motivatedness of somatisms.
Oppositeness, i.e. the relation between opposites or contraries or contradictories, has a fundamental role in human cognition. In the various domains of intellectual and psychological activity we find ordering schemas that are based, in one way or another, on the cognitive figure of oppositeness. It is therefore not surprising that the figure and its corresponding ordering schemas show their reflexes in the languages of the world. [...] We shall be dealing with oppositeness in the sense that a linguistically untrained native speaker, when asked what would be the opposite of 'long' can come up with some such answer as 'short', and likewise intuitively grasp the relation between 'man' and 'woman', 'corne' and 'go', 'up' and 'down', etc. Thinking that much of the vocabulary of a language is organized in such opposite pairs we must recognize that this is an important faculty, and we are curious to know how this is done, what are the underlying conceptual-cognitive structures and processes, and how they are encoded in the languages of the world. We shall leave out of consideration such oppositions as singular vs. plural. present vs. past, voiced vs. unvoiced, oppositions that the linguist states by means of a metalanguage which is itself derived from a concept of oppositeness as manifested by the examples which I gave earlier. Our approach will connect with earlier versions of the UNITYP framework. However, as a novel feature, and, hopefully, as an improvement, we shall apply some sort of a division of labor. We shall first try to reconstruct the conceptual-cognitive content of oppositeness and to keep it separate from the discussion of its reflexes in the individual languages. We shall find that a dimensional ordering of content in PARAMETERS and a continuum of TECHNIQUES is possible already on the conceptual-cognitive level. In order to keep it distinct from the level of linguistic encoding we shall use a separate terminology, graphically marked by capital 1etters.
This paper presents two experimental studies investigating the processing of presupposed content. Both studies employ the German additive particle auch (too). In the first study, participants were given a questionnaire containing bi-clausal, ambiguous sentences with 'auch' in the second clause. The presupposition introduced by auch was only satisfied on one of the two readings of the sentence, and this reading corresponded to a syntactically dispreferred parse of the sentence. The prospect of having the auch-presupposition satisfied made participants choose this syntactically dispreferred reading more frequently than in a control condition. The second study used the self-paced-reading paradigm and compared the reading times on clauses containing auch, which differed in whether the presupposition of auch was satisfied or not. Participants read the clause more slowly when the presupposition was not satisfied. It is argued that the two studies show that presuppositions play an important role in online sentence comprehension and affect the choice of syntactic analysis. Some theoretical implications of these findings for semantic theory and dynamic accounts of presuppositions as well as for theories of semantic processing are discussed.
Der folgende Betrag skizziert das Konzept und Optionen einer lexikalischen Typologie, die sich über das E&K-Paradigma (Entrenchment und Konventionalisierung) definiert. Zugrunde gelegt werden sprachliche Symbolisierungen, die sich in ihrem signifié-Bereich der Domäne von 'Ursache/Wirkung'-Konzeptualisierungen zuordnen lassen. Es handelt sich bei diesem Beitrag nicht um eine vollausformulierte Darstellung von konkreten Forschungsergebnissen selbst, sondern um die Ausarbeitung derjenigen methodischen und theoretischen Grundlagen, die für eine entsprechende, E&K-basierte Typologie relevant sind. Der Einfachheit halber wird die Zielgröße der Darstellung hier als "CAUSA" bezeichnet.
Embedded implicatures and experimental constraints : a reply to Geurts & Pouscoulous and Chemla
(2010)
Experimental evidence on embedded implicatures by Chemla (2009b) and Geurts & Pouscoulous (2009a) has fewer theoretical consequences than assumed: On the one hand, the evidence successfully argues against obligatory local implicature computation, which has however already been discredited. On the other hand, the data are fully consistent with optional local implicature computation.
Das Tip-of-the-Tongue-Phänomen (TOT) bildet neben Pausen und Versprechern eine weitere Störungsklasse der Sprachproduktion. Im TOT-Zustand kann auf semantische (Konzept) und syntaktische Informationen (Lemma) zugegriffen werden, aber nur begrenzt auf phonologische Informationen (Lexem). Die komplette Wortform bleibt verborgen. Um TOTs im Labor zu evozieren, wurden Definitionen auf einem Computerbildschirm präsentiert, z. B. „ständig umlaufender Aufzug ohne Tür“ für Paternoster. Die Probanden gaben über die Computertastatur an, ob sie das Wort kennen und benennen können (JA), das gesuchte Wort nicht kennen (NEIN) oder es ihnen auf der Zunge liegt (TOT). Im TOT-Zustand wurde ein Cue visuell präsentiert. Beim Cueing-Verfahren wurden bisher Silben-Cues in Wörter bzw. Pseudowörter eingebettet und diese innerhalb von Wortlisten dargeboten, um die Auflösung eines TOTs zu manipulieren. In den vorliegenden Studien wurden die Silben-Cues isoliert präsentiert. Der Vorteil besteht darin, dass eine Silbe per se keine semantischen (Wortbedeutung) und syntaktischen Informationen (Wortart) enthält. Die Präsentation isolierter korrekter, inkorrekter und erweiterter Silben ist neu in der TOT-Forschung. Außerdem bietet die vorliegende Arbeit die erste Studie sowohl im Cueing-Paradigma als auch im Bereich der Reaktionszeitmessung (RT) zu TOTs im Deutschen.
Im Pre-Test wurden die Definitionen vorgetestet. In den beiden Pilotstudien wurden das Design für die Reaktionszeitmessung evaluiert und weitere Definitionen gesammelt und überprüft. Im ersten Experiment zeigte sich, dass mit der korrekten Silbe (z. B. Pa für Paternoster) die TOTs etwa doppelt so schnell aufgelöst werden konnten als mit einer inkorrekten Silbe (z. B. Ko) und der Kontrollbedingung (xxx). Die korrekte Silbe führte außerdem zu signifikant mehr akkuraten Antworten im Vergleich zu den beiden anderen Bedingungen. Die inkorrekte Silbe hat die TOT-Auflösung zwar nicht blockiert (nicht mehr inakkurate Antworten), aber gehemmt: Die Anzahl an akkuraten Antworten wurde reduziert und die Anzahl an unaufgelösten TOTs erhöht. Im zweiten Experiment wurde demonstriert, dass die erweiterte Silbe (z. B. Pat für Paternoster) die TOT-Auflösung im Vergleich zur regulären Silbe sowohl signifikant beschleunigte (kürzere RTs) als auch signifikant verstärkte (mehr akkurate Antworten). Dies lässt sich mit dem segmentalen Überlappungseffekt erklären. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Studien unterstützen Sprachproduktionsmodelle, die einen interaktiven Aktivierungsfluss haben und eine Silben-Ebene unterhalb der Phonem-Ebene annehmen.
The present article analyzes the development of the system of spatial prepositions in the acquisition of German as a foreign language by Brazilian learners. The study is based on a corpus of written language data produced by students in the undergraduate course in Letras, collected from 1996 to 1998. The theoretical bases of the study are theories of second language acquisition, cognitive processing of space, and the linguistic encoding of spatial relations through prepositions. The main section of the analysis begins with the quantitative evaluation of the occurrences of spatial prepositions found in the data. Subsequently, each preposition found in the corpus is individually discussed in relation to its correct and incorrect uses. The main results are a steady increase in the number of spatial prepositions used by the subjects from the first year to the fourth year of the course, an increase in the variation of the use of these prepositions, and a constant reduction of the percentage of incorrect uses. In the first phase, acquisition can be seen in the increasing specificity of the semantic oppositions involved in neutralizations, whereas in the second phase, a quantitative reduction of errors can be found.
This paper follows a new perspective on speech errors within the framework of Articulatory Phonology, as proposed by Goldstein et al. (in prep.). On the basis of kinematic evidence, their work has demonstrated that speech errors are not restricted to categorical exchanges of position of segmental units, but rather gestures that compose segments can exhibit errors that vary from zero to maximal in magnitude.
Here we report results from two perceptual experiments which use stimuli selected on the basis of their articulatory properties only, covering a range of errorful gestural activations. The outcome of the perceptual experiments suggests that different segments show different degrees of vulnerability to (subsegmental) speech errors: While listeners detected errors reliably for some segments, for other segments the reaction to errorful and non-errorful tokens was not distinct. The data suggest that at least for some error types an asymmetric error distribution arises due to perception, while production itself is not asymmetric. However, for error types involving segments whose gestural compositions stand in a subset relationship to each other (as described below), asymmetries may indeed originate in production due to the overall dominance of a gestural intrusion bias observed in the production data of Goldstein et al. (in prep.).
Im Beitrag wird auf aktuelle Ergebnisse der Forschung zum mentalen Lexikon eingegangen. Das mentale Lexikon wird dabei aus der Sicht der Netzwerktheorie untersucht. Der Netzwerkcharakter des mentalen Lexikons hat zur Folge, dass die gelernten Wörter nicht voneinander unabhängig existieren: Sie sind miteinander verknüpft. Diese Verknüpfungen sind nicht gleich stark; zudem ist die Richtung dieser Verknüpfung von großer Bedeutung. Assoziationstests in mehreren Sprachen zeigen, dass dasselbe Wort in verschiedenen Sprachen verschiedene Verknüpfungen hat bzw. dass die Stärke der Verknüpfungen zwischen zwei beliebigen Wörtern von Sprache zu Sprache variiert. Beim Fremdsprachenerwerb und Fremdsprachenunterricht werden diese Unterschiede kaum berücksichtigt. Der vorliegende Beitrag analysiert das mentale Lexikon aus der Perspektive der Netzwerke. Dabei wird das Projekt ConnectYourMind vorgestellt, das in mehreren Sprachen Assoziationsdaten sammelt.
We present the results of an experimental study which targets prosodic correlates of subclausal quotation marks. We found that written sentences containing passages enclosed by quotation marks were read aloud in a manner that significantly differs in prosody from spoken realizations of corresponding disquoted counterparts. However, we also observed that such prosodic marking of subclausal quotation wasn't strong enough to survive subsequent back-translation into written language: there was no correlation between the presence/absence of quotation marks in the original written examples, and the presence/absence of quotation marks in corresponding back-translations from oral renditions. We investigated three different kinds of uses of quotation marks and found no systematic difference between them with respect to prosodic marking.
It is well known that English children between the age of 4 and 6 display a so-called Delay of Principle B Effect (DPBE) in that they allow pronouns to refer to a local c-commanding antecedent. Their guessing pattern with pronouns contrasts with their adult-like interpretation of reflexives. The DPBE has been explained as resulting from a lack of pragmatic knowledge or insufficient cognitive resources. However, such extra-grammatical accounts cannot explain why the DPBE only shows up in particular languages and in particular syntactic environments. Moreover, such accounts fail to explain why the DPBE only emerges in comprehension and not in production. This paper hypothesizes that the presence or absence of the DPBE can be explained from the properties of the grammar. Fischer's (2004) optimality-theoretic analysis of binding, explaining cross-linguistic variation, and Hendriks and Spenader's (2005/6) optimality-theoretic account of the acquisition of pronouns and reflexives are combined into a single model. This model yields testable predictions with respect to the presence or absence of the DPBE in particular languages, in particular syntactic environments, and in comprehension and/or production.
This paper presents results of corpus analytic investigations of children's use of referring expressions and considers possible implications of this work for questions relating to development of theory of mind. The study confirms previous findings that children use the full range of referring forms (definite and indefinite articles, demonstrative determiners, and demonstrative and personal pronouns) appropriately by age 3 or earlier. It also provides support for two distinct stages in mind-reading ability. The first, which is implicit and non-propositional, includes the ability to assess cognitive statuses such as familiarity and focus of attention in relation to the intended referent; the second, which is propositional and more conscious, includes the ability to assess epistemic states such as knowledge and belief. Distinguishing these two stages supports attempts to reconcile seemingly inconsistent results concerning the age at which children develop theory of mind. It also makes it possible to explain why children learn to use forms correctly be-fore they exhibit the pragmatic ability to consider and calculate quantity implicatures.
