: verstimmte Einfühlung in Arthur Schnitzlers "Fräulein Else"
(2019)
In the 1924 novella "Fräulein Else" by Arthur Schnitzler, intermediality influences narrative empathy. Written in the stream of consciousness technique, the text presents an examination of the nineteen-year-old protagonist's inner struggle and its sexual implications (to save her father from jail, Else must approach an elderly acquaintance to borrow money from him), arousing the reader's empathy. The image of Else is supported, even overlapped by hidden art references - examples of how women have been portrayed and represented in art and cultural history. In the most famous moment of the novella - Else undresses herself during a public concert - the stream of consciousness is interrupted by musical excerpts. Mostly considered as an emotional catalyst, at this point the musical quotation is blocking narrative empathy. Else's thoughts as well as her naked body become unreadable, because the notation is indifferent towards the reader's desires. Paradoxically, the narrative turning point is represented by an intermedial censorship.
Through the example of Mozart, this article studies the role played by music in biographies of composers. By focusing on three different works, all targeting a wide audience, but coming from different centuries and cultures ("Leben des K. K. Kapellmeisters Wolfgang Gottlieb Mozart" by Franz Xaver Niemetschek, "Life of Mozart" by Edward Holmes, and "Mozart" by Jean-Victor Hocquard), it investigates both stylistic matters (how the music is described), and the concrete effect of cultural behaviors (the subordination of the work to the man, or the difficulty of talking about music). The study highlights some essential components of Mozartean mythology, as well as the close relationship between biographies, novels and the evolution of musicology as a discipline.
This article aims to reveal the hitherto unknown circumstances of the creation of the opera "King Roger" ["Król Roger", premiere 1926] by the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski (1882-1932). As will be shown, this opera, with its oriental color, owes its genesis to the concluding of what we call "an emotional pact", referring to the 1918 meetings in Elizavetgrad, and then in Odessa on the Black Sea, between the composer and his cousin, the prose writer and poet Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz (1894-1980). Their Odessa stay, in particular, fostered the crystallization of their conception of beauty, and allowed namely the Dionysian element to emerge. At the same time, Odessa was where the creators were able to share the secret of their homosexuality, a place which functioned as a substitute for the Orient and an escape from the nightmare of World War I - all elements that found a wonderful expression in the libretto and the music of "King Roger".
This article analyzes the relationship between emotions and jazz music in Lithuanian literature originating during the Soviet-era, and considers emotions as text phenomena. In the following investigation, a drama by Juozas Grušas, two prose works by Romualdas Lankauskas and Ričardas Gavelis, and four poems by Judita Vaičiūnaitė, Janina Degutytė, Antanas Jonynas and Tomas Arūnas Rudokas are analyzed in chronological order. The analysis focuses on two types of verbal configuration of emotion: thematization (explicit emotions; content level) and presentation (implicit configuration of emotions, content, and form level). The following questions come to the fore: What emotions are named in the texts? How are they depicted? What emotions are thematized in conjunction with the music? What effect does the jazz music have, and what emotions arise at its reception in the text? How are those emotions and jazz music related to the historical context, namely the Soviet period?
Pascal Quignard belongs to those contemporary French writers whose work draws on music, while demonstrating ambivalent or even ambiguous feelings towards it. In this article, we explore the reasons, the challenges and the functions of what Quignard himself called the 'hatred of music' in an eponymous and landmark essay in which he reveals the secrets of his relationship to music, a relationship that intertwines his family history with the History of the Second World War.
If the poet's song is a 'topos' of Greek and Roman epic literature, the poet Silius Italicus renews it by describing the emotional reaction of his audience in depth and by placing it in a transitional moment of his narrative dedicated to the second Punic war. Tradition from antique historiography relates that Hannibal and his men became "soft" in Capua where feasting, pleasure, inebriation and indolence were common. Yet, Silius Italicus blames Teuthras' two songs for this weakening. This article examines Teuthras' second performance which hides beneath its soft melody a further meaning unintelligible to the audience who cannot escape their emotion. The aim is to reveal how poetical and musical emotion - 'admiratio' - and the weakening of the Carthaginians are structured in term of diegetic, and in the sub- and meta-discourse of Teuthras' second song.
This paper aims to demonstrate the hidden place of the surrealist poet, Paul Éluard, in Samuel Beckett's writing process. It will show that Beckett not only read and translated Paul Éluard, as is known, but also quoted him extensively. Moving from Beethoven to the short story "Lessness", the place of quotation as a trace of emotion will be examined.
The representation of music in literature is often conceived in terms of a 'paragone', a debate over which of the arts ranks highest. In this context, literature is commonly spoken of as imitative or emulative of the music it is trying to represent. This premise informs even the most recent terminologies of literary scholars describing the intermedial relationship of music and literature systematically. Using the narratological concepts of 'showing vs. telling' to describe musical representation in literature, as proposed by the "Handbuch Literatur & Musik", this article argues that such a view is based on a misleading assumption about literary imitation and leads to constrained possibilities of hermeneutical interpretation. After a systematic reconstruction of the proposed terminology and a proposal for its modification, an exemplary analysis of Helmut Krausser's novel "Melodien" ["Melodies", 1993] will serve to demonstrate how a refined conception of the terminology can help to bring about more precise interpretations.
This article explores the relations between affects and music in George Sand's novel "Adriani" (1853). It examines how the figuration of music highlights the importance of emotions, as they shift from aesthetic (admiration) to moral (compassion), in her protagonists' moral transformations. However, Sand's transposition of an imaginary musical world in the novel is part and parcel of a much more ambitious project, that of social transformations, notably of relations between the sexes. It is through their dialogue in and via music that her heroes discover each other and themselves, while their intimate trajectories enable the reader to imagine interpersonal relations among equals founded on emotional, intellectual and social reciprocity.
In poetry, music is often mentioned to express emotions, but it also brings poetry back to its source. Through poems by Eichendorff, Droste-Hülshoff, Baudelaire, Verlaine, Lorca, Rilke and Mandelstam, this article examines a deepening of the relationship between poetry, music and emotion, through which poetry discovers itself by being attentive to what is within itself of the order of the musical or the song.
The natural musicality of Italians : 18th-century medical and literary discourse on melancholy
(2019)
After studying the way in which various modern interpretations (political, psychoanalytic, traumatological) of Homer analyze the emotions aroused and/or conveyed by the song of the sirens, we will look at the "self-reflexive" interpretation that Maurice Blanchot ("Le Livre à venir", 1959) proposes of "Odyssey's" "Song XII". We will see that this interpretation can provide an excellent reading grid for modern rewritings of the episode, which overinvest one of the emotional aspects of the sirens' song - that is, the emotion of the language that goes out of itself in order to become music (in Joyce - "Ulysses", 1918-1920) or silence (in Kafka - "Das Schweigen der Sirenen", 1917).
Since antiquity, poetry and music in the Near East have been interrelated and were believed to have extraordinary powers. Both the context in which oral poetry is set, and the musically induced state of enchantment or ecstasy it produces, are defined in Arabic by the word 'ṭarab'. This article aims to provide an exhaustive definition of this concept, as well as a brief introduction to the artistic domain that encompasses extemporary performance of songs/poems, from the pre-Islamic period up until our modern era. Drawing on literary excerpts, the article attempts to highlight how music, literary performance and aesthetic emotion are amalgamated through the holistic experience of 'ṭarab', which has maintained its basic features virtually unchanged from the days of Ǧāhiliyya until the golden age of Umm Kulthum.
Although Alexander von Humboldt is well known for his major impact on the development of new scientific knowledge and the rise of disciplines such as Geography and Ecology, his critical reflections on languages from a scientific point of view, as well as from an aesthetic perspective, still receive little attention. New research has shown that von Humboldt's writings on the languages of indigenous people may well be considered the beginning of anthropological-comparative linguistics. This article outlines the significance of von Humboldt's aesthetics of language in his own scientific texts. He explores the different dimensions of sound landscapes, combinating scientific description in prose and the sound of the indigenous terms. By this strategy, he connects different forms of "text islands" ('Textinseln') in order to create an intratextual web of knowledge archipelagos based on his concept of a science which refers to the senses ('sinnliche Wissenschaft'). The polyphonic structure of his writing opens up a collage of natural musical arrangements of animal and human sounds, fused into a common language of life forms bound together by the "phonotextual" soundscape of his writing skills. By merging epistemic and aesthetic forms, he creates a symphony of life between art, science, and nature.
