We investigate the effect of large magnetic fields on the (2 + 1)-dimensional reduced-magnetohydrodynamical expansion of hot and dense nuclear matter produced in √sNN = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions. For the sake of simplicity,we consider the casewhere themagnetic field points in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane. We also consider this field to be external, with energy density parametrized as a two-dimensional Gaussian. The width of the Gaussian along the directions orthogonal to the beam axis varies with the centrality of the collision. The dependence of the magnetic field on proper time (τ ) for the case of zero electrical conductivity of the QGP is parametrized following Deng et al. [Phys. Rev. C 85, 044907 (2012)], and for finite electrical conductivity following Tuchin [Phys. Rev. C 88, 024911 (2013)].We solve the equations of motion of ideal hydrodynamics for such an external magnetic field. For collisions with nonzero impact parameter we observe considerable changes in the evolution of the momentum eccentricities of the fireball when comparing the case when the magnetic field decays in a conducting QGP medium and when no magnetic field is present. The elliptic-flow coefficient v2 of π− is shown to increase in the presence of an external magnetic field and the increment in v2 is found to depend on the evolution and the initial magnitude of the magnetic field.
In the initial stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, strong magnetic fields appear due to the large velocity of the colliding charges. The evolution of these fields appears as a novel and intriguing feature in the fluid-dynamical description of heavy-ion collisions. In this work, we study analytically the one-dimensional, longitudinally boost-invariant motion of an ideal fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Interestingly, we find that, in the limit of ideal magnetohydrodynamics, i.e., for infinite conductivity, and irrespective of the strength of the initial magnetization, the decay of the fluid energy density e with proper time τ is the same as for the time-honoured “Bjorken flow” without magnetic field. Furthermore, when the magnetic field is assumed to decay , where a is an arbitrary number, two classes of analytic solutions can be found depending on whether a is larger or smaller than one. In summary, the analytic solutions presented here highlight that the Bjorken flow is far more general than formerly thought. These solutions can serve both to gain insight on the dynamics of heavy-ion collisions in the presence of strong magnetic fields and as testbeds for numerical codes.
In the search for novel organic charge transfer salts with variable degrees of charge transfer we have studied the effects of two modifications of the recently synthesized donor–acceptor system [tetramethoxypyrene (TMP)]–[tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ)]. One is of chemical nature by substituting the acceptor TCNQ molecules by F4TCNQ molecules. The second consists in simulating the application of uniaxial pressure along the stacking axis of the system. In order to test the chemical substitution, we have grown single crystals of the TMP–F4TCNQ complex and analyzed its electronic structure via electronic transport measurements, ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations and UV/VIS/IR absorption spectroscopy. This system shows an almost ideal geometrical overlap of nearly planar molecules stacked alternately (mixed stack) and this arrangement is echoed by a semiconductor-like transport behavior with an increased conductivity along the stacking direction. This is in contrast to TMP–TCNQ which shows a less pronounced anisotropy and a smaller conductivity response. Our band structure calculations confirm the one-dimensional behavior of TMP–F4TCNQ with pronounced dispersion only along the stacking axis. Infrared measurements illustrating the C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N vibration frequency shift in F4TCNQ suggest however no improvement in the degree of charge transfer in TMP–F4TCNQ with respect to TMP–TCNQ. In both complexes about 0.1e is transferred from TMP to the acceptor. Concerning the pressure effect, our DFT calculations on the designed TMP–TCNQ and TMP–F4TCNQ structures under different pressure conditions show that application of uniaxial pressure along the stacking axis of TMP–TCNQ may be the route to follow in order to obtain a much more pronounced charge transfer.
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters shuttle diverse substrates across biological membranes. They play a role in many physiological processes but are also the reason for antibiotic resistance of microbes and multi drug resistance in cancer, and their dysfunction can lead to serious diseases. Transport is achieved through an ATP-driven closure of the two nucleotide binding sites (NBSs) which induces a transition between an inward-facing (IF) and an outward-facing (OF) conformation of the connected transmembrane domains (TMDs). In contrast to this forward transition, the reverse transition (OF-to-IF) that involves Mg2+-dependent ATP hydrolysis and release is less understood. This is particularly relevant for heterodimeric ABC transporters with asymmetric NBSs. These transporters possess an ATPase active consensus NBS (c-NBS) and a degenerate NBS (d-NBS) with little or no ATPase activity.
Crucial details regarding function and mechanism of the transport cycle remain elusive.
Here, these open questions were addressed using pulse electron-electron double resonance (PELDOR or DEER) spectroscopy of the heterodimeric ABC exporter TmrAB.
To better understand the transport cycle, the underlying kinetics of the conformational transitions need to be elucidated. By introducing paramagnetic nitroxide (NO) spin probes at key positions of TmrAB and employing time-resolved PELDOR spectroscopy, the forward transition could be followed over time and the rate constants for the conformational transition at the TMDs and NBSs were characterized.
The temperature dependence of these rate constants was further analyzed to determine for the first time the activation energy of conformational changes in a large membrane protein. For TMD opening and c-NBS dimerization, values of 75 ± 27 kJ/mol and 56 ± 3 kJ/mol, respectively were found. These values agree with reported activation energies of peptide transport and peptide dissociation in other ABC transporters, suggesting that the forward transition may be the rate-limiting step for substrate translocation.
The functional relevance of asymmetric NBSs is so far not well understood. By combining Mg2+-to-Mn2+ substitution with Mn2+-NO and NO-NO PELDOR spectroscopy, the binding of ATP-Mn2+, the conformation of the NBSs, and the conformation of the TMDs could be simultaneously monitored for the first time. These results reveal an asymmetric post-hydrolytic state. Time-resolved investigation showed that ATP hydrolysis at the active c-NBS triggers the reverse transition, whereas opening of the impaired d-NBS regulates the return to the IF conformation.
We study a relativistic model of the nucleus consisting of nucleons coupled to mesonic degrees of freedom via an effective Lagrangian whose parameters are determined by a fit to selected nuclear ground-state data. We find that the model allows a very good description of nuclear ground-state properties. Because of the relativistic nature of the model, the spin properties are uniquely fixed. We discuss variations of the parametrization and of the data which suggest that the present fit has exhausted the limits of the mean-field approximation, and discuss extensions which go beyond the mean field.
Within a relativistic mean-field theory (RMFT) experimental data on the single-particle spectra of lambda hypernuclei are well reproduced. It is shown that the coupling constants cannot be fixed unambiguously from the single-particle spectra. The stability and structure of multi-lambda hypernuclei is explored on the basis of the RMFT using the coupling constants as determined from the observed single lambda hypernuclear levels. It is predicted that multistrange nuclei exhibit an enhanced interaction radius, which further increases in the case of finite temperatures. We suggest that multi-lambda hypernuclei could be produced in high-energy heavy ions and observed in secondary noncharge-changing reactions. The equation of state of lambda matter and the possibility of pure lambda droplets are also discussed.
Ionization, pair creation, and electron excitations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are investigated in the framework of the coupled-channel formalism. Collisions between heavy projectiles and Pb82+ are considered for various bombarding energies in the region E=500 up to 2000 MeV/u. Useful symmetry relations for the matrix elements are derived and the influence of gauge transformations onto the coupled-channel equations is explored.
So z.
A medium modified gluon propagator is used to evaluate the scattering cross section for the process gg - gg in the QCD medium by performing an ex- plicit sum over the polarizations of the gluons. We incorporate a magnetic sreening mass from a non - perturbative study. It is shown that the medium modified cross section is finite, divergence free, and is independent of any ad-hoc momentum transfer cut-off parameters. The medium modified finite cross sections are necessary for a realistic investigation of the production and equilibration of the minijet plasma expected at RHIC and LHC PACS: 12.38.Mh; 14.70.Dj; 12.38.Bx; 11.10.Wx
Within the ADD-model, we elaborate an idea by Vacavant and Hinchliffe [J. Phys. G 27 (2001) 1839] and show quantitatively how to determine the fundamental scale of TeV-gravity and the number of compactified extra dimensions from data at LHC. We demonstrate that the ADD-model leads to strong correlations between the missing ET in gravitons at different center of mass energies. This correlation puts strong constraints on this model for extra dimensions, if probed at s=5.5 TeV and s=14 TeV at LHC.

Precise tune determination and split beam emittance reconstruction at the CERN PS synchrotron
(2023)
In accelerator physics, the need to improve the performance and better control the operating point of an accelerator has become, year after year, an increasingly important need in order to achieve higher energies and brightness, as well as point-like particle beams. If this involves increasingly advanced technological developments (in terms, for example, of materials for more intense superconducting magnets), it can not take place in the absence of targeted studies of linear and non-linear beam dynamics. In the context of this Ph.D. thesis in physics, linear and non-linear dynamics of charged particles in circular accelerators is the topic that will be discussed and treated in detail. In particular, the presentation and discussion of the results will be divided in two main topics: the need to know the physical properties of a proton beam; and the development of innovative methods to determine and study the accelerator’s working point. With regard to the first topic, an innovative procedure will be presented to determine the transverse size of the PS beam in the beam extraction phase. Among the different ways the extraction occurs at the PS, the analysed one is based on the transverse splitting of the beam by means of non-linear fields. Thus, the knowledge of the transverse beam size is not trivial since resonant linear and non-linear beam structures (namely, core and islands) arise and, for each of them, the beam size has to be quantified. This parameter is crucial for two main reasons: the accelerator that will receive the beam exiting the upstream accelerator may have restrictions (physical or magnetic) that involve a partial or total loss of the incoming beam; and any experiments located downstream of the considered accelerator may need a beam with a transversal size as constant as possible; consequently, its monitoring and control are essential. The second topic concerns the accurate determination of the working point of an accelerator, defined as the number of transverse oscillations the particle beam travels per unit of accelerator circumference, both horizontally and vertically. This quantity is called horizontal and vertical tune, respectively. Their knowledge is also crucial to understand whether the beam will be stable or unstable. In fact, not all tune values are acceptable, as there are particular values that bring the beam into resonance. In this configuration, the amplitude of the transverse oscillations of the particles increases in an uncontrolled manner and leads to the loss of all or part of the beam. Note that, in particular operating conditions, the resonant conditions are sought and desired to model, in a suitable way, the transversal shape of the beam, such as the above mentioned PS extraction scheme. It is even clearer how much the determination of the machine working point is essential to determine the operating conditions of an accelerator. In this context, several methods (also taken from the field of applied mathematics) to calculate the tune will be demonstrated and tested numerically on different types of synthetic signals. At the end of this description, the use of experimental data will allow to obtain the benchmark of a new method for the direct calculation of some characteristic quantities of non-linear beam dynamics (namely, the amplitude detuning, i.e. the variation of tune as a function of intensity of the perturbation provided to the beam.
The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Flow results obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictions of the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data.
We report on the event-by-event multiplicity fluctuations of identified particles in central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. Employing a novel approach we unfolded the moments of the unknown multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K), pions (π) and electrons. Using these moments we reconstructed an excitation function of the fluctuation measure νdyn[A;B], with A and B denoting different particle types. Specifically, we reconstructed νdyn for the [p, π], [p, K] and [K, π] pairs. The energy dependence of νdyn is in agreement with previously published NA49 results on the related measure σdyn. Moreover, for [K; p] and [K;p] pairs, we discovered a dependence of the fluctuation measure νdyn on the phase space coverage (acceptance). Interestingly for the [p,π] case no significant acceptance dependence was observed. These observations provide a likely explanation of the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au+Au collisions.
System size dependence of multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles produced in nuclear collisions at 158 A GeV was studied in the NA49 CERN experiment. Results indicate a non-monotonic dependence of the scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution with a maximum for semi-peripheral Pb+Pb interactions with number of projectile participants of about 35. This effect is not observed in a string-hadronic model of nuclear collision HIJING.
In the current dismal situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, effective management of patients with pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome is of vital importance. Due to the current lack of effective pharmacological concepts, this situation has caused interest in (re)considering historical reports on the treatment of patients with low-dose radiation therapy for pneumonia. Although these historical reports are of low-level evidence per se, hampering recommendations for decision-making in the clinical setting, they indicate effectiveness in the dose range between 0.3 and 1 Gy, similar to more recent dose concepts in the treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory/degenerative benign diseases with, e.g., a single dose per fraction of 0.5 Gy. This concise review aims to critically review the evidence for low-dose radiation treatment of COVID-19 pneumopathy and discuss whether it is worth investigating in the present clinical situation.
After a brief introduction on QCD and effective models in the first chapter, I analyze the dependence of the QCD transition temperature on the quark (or pion) mass in the second chapter. I found that a linear sigma model, which links the transition to chiral symmetry restoration, predicts a much stronger dependence of T_c on m_pi than seen in present lattice data for m_pi >~ 0.4 GeV. On the other hand, an effective Lagrangian for the Polyakov loop requires only small explicit symmetry breaking to describe T_c(m_pi) in the above mass range. In the third and fourth chapter, I study the linear sigma model with O(N) symmetry at nonzero temperature in the framework of the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism. Extending the set of two-particle irreducible diagrams by adding sunset diagrams to the usual Hartree-Fock (or Hartree) contributions, I derive a new approximation scheme which extends the standard Hartree-Fock (or Hartree) approximation by the inclusion of nonzero decay widths.
Rapidity distributions of net hyperons (Λ−Λ¯¯¯¯) are compared to distributions of participant protons (p−p¯¯¯). Strangeness production (mean multiplicities of produced Λ/Σ0 hyperons and ⟨K+K¯¯¯¯¯⟩) in central nucleus-nucleus collisions is shown for different collision systems at different energies. An enhanced production of Λ¯¯¯¯ compared to p¯¯¯ is observed at 200 GeV per nucleon.
In vorangegangenen Arbeiten (Albrecht, M.A., Kegel, W.H. (1987)), (Kegel, W.H., Piehler, G., Albrecht, M.A. (1993)), (Piehler, G., Kegel, W.H.
The discovery of superconductivity in layered vanadium-based kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A: K, Rb, Cs) has added a new family of materials to the growing class of possible unconventional superconductors. However, the nature of the superconducting pairing in these materials remains elusive. We present a microscopic theoretical study of the leading superconducting instabilities on the kagome lattice based on spin- and charge-fluctuation mediated Cooper pairing. The applied methodology includes effects of both on-site and nearest-neighbor repulsive Coulomb interactions. Near the upper van Hove filling -- relevant for the AV3Sb5 materials -- we find a rich phase diagram with several pairing symmetries being nearly degenerate. In particular, while a substantial fraction of the phase diagram is occupied by a spin-singlet order parameter transforming as a two-dimensional irreducible representation of the point group, several nodal spin-triplet pairing states remain competitive. We compute the band and interaction parameter-dependence of the hierarchy of the leading superconducting instabilities, and determine the detailed momentum dependence of the resulting preferred gap structures. Crucially, for moderate values of the interaction parameters, the individual pairing states depend strongly on momentum and exhibit multiple nodes on the Fermi surface. We discuss the properties of these superconducting gap structures in light of recent experimental developments of the AV3Sb5 materials.
Magnetism is a beautiful example of a macroscopic quantum phenomenon. While known at least since the ancient Greeks, a microscopic theoretical explanation of magnetism could only be achieved with the advent of quantum mechanics at the beginning of the 20th century. Then it was understood that in a certain class of solids the famous Pauli exclusion principle leads to an effective interaction between the microscopic magnetic moments, i.e., the spins, which favors an ordered, and hence macroscopically magnetic, state. Nowadays, magnetic phenomena are used in a host of applications, and are especially relevant for information storage and processing technologies.
Despite the long history of the field, magnetic phenomena are still an active research topic. In particular, in the last decade the fields of spintronics and spin-caloritronics emerged, which manipulate the microscopic spins via charge and heat currents respectively. This opens new avenues to potential applications; including the possibility to use the magnetic spin degrees of freedom instead of charges as carriers of information, which could provide a number of advantages such as reduced losses and further miniaturization.
In this thesis we do not delve any further into the realm of possible applications. Instead we use sophisticated theories to explore the microscopic spin dynamics which is the basis of all such applications. We also focus on a particular compound: Yttrium-iron garnet (YIG), which is a ferrimagnetic insulator. This material has been widely used in experiments on magnetism over the last decades, and is a popular candidate for spintronic devices. Microscopically, the low-energy magnetic properties of YIG can be described by a ferromagnetic Heisenberg model. For spintronics and spin-caloritronics applications, it is however insufficient to only consider the magnetic degrees of freedom; one should also include the coupling of the spins to the elastic lattice vibrations, i.e., the phonons. Besides giving an overview on techniques used throughout the thesis, the introductory Ch. 1 provides a discussion of the microscopic Hamiltonian used to model the coupled spin-phonon system in the subsequent chapters.
The topic of Ch. 2 are the consequences of the magnetoelastic coupling on the low-energy magnon excitations in YIG. Starting from the microscopic spin-phonon Hamiltonian, we rigorously derive the magnon-phonon hybridization and scattering vertices in a controlled spin wave expansion. For the experimentally relevant case of thin YIG films at room temperature, these vertices are then used to compute the magnetoelastic modes as well as the magnon damping. In the course of this work, the damping of magnons in this system was also investigated experimentally using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. While comparison to the experimental data shows that the magnetoelastic interactions do not dominate the total magnon relaxation in the experimentally accessible regime, we are able to show that the spin-lattice relaxation time is strongly momentum dependent, thereby providing a microscopic explanation of a recent experiment.
In the final Ch. 3, we investigate a different phenomenon occurring in thin YIG films: Room temperature condensation of magnons. Prior work attributed this condensation process to quantum mechanics, i.e., it was interpreted as Bose-Einstein condensation. However, this is not satisfactory because at room temperature, the magnons in YIG behave as purely classical waves. In particular, the quantum Bose-Einstein distribution reduces to the classical Rayleigh-Jeans distribution in this case. In addition, the effective spin in YIG is very large. Therefore we start from the hypothesis that the room temperature magnon condensation is actually a new example of the kinetic condensation of classical waves, which has so far only been observed by imaging classical light in a photorefractive crystal. To distinguish this classical condensation from the quantum mechanical Bose-Einstein one, we refer to it as Rayleigh-Jeans condensation. To prove our claim, we consider the classical equations of motion of the coupled spin-phonon system. By eliminating the phonon degrees of freedom, we microscopically derive a non-Markovian stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (LLG) for the classical spin vectors. We then use this LLG to perform numerical simulations of the magnon dynamics, with all parameters fixed by experiments. These simulations accurately reproduce all stages of the magnon time evolution observed in experiments, including the appearance of the magnon condensate at the bottom of the magnon spectrum. In this way we confirm our initial hypothesis that the magnon condensation is a classical Rayleigh-Jeans condensation, which is unrelated to quantum mechanics.
The phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model: a variational Monte Carlo study
(2014)
We investigate the phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model at half-filling with the variational Monte Carlo method for both the magnetic and the paramagnetic case as a function of the interlayer hopping and on-site Coulomb repulsion U. With this study we resolve some discrepancies in previous calculations based on the dynamical mean-field theory, and we are able to determine the nature of the phase transitions between metal, Mott insulator and band insulator. In the magnetic case we find only two phases: an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at small for any value of U and a band insulator at large . At large U values we approach the Heisenberg limit. The paramagnetic phase diagram shows at small a metal to Mott insulator transition at moderate U values and a Mott to band insulator transition at larger U values. We also observe a re-entrant Mott insulator to metal transition and metal to band insulator transition for increasing in the range of . Finally, we discuss the phase diagrams obtained in relation to findings from previous studies based on different many-body approaches.
In this thesis, I study the phase diagram of dense, locally neutral three-flavor quark matter as a function of the strange quark mass, the quark chemical potential, and the temperature, employing a general nine-parameter ansatz for the gap matrix. At zero temperature and small values of the strange quark mass, the ground state of quark matter corresponds to the color–flavor-locked (CFL) phase. At some critical value of the strange quark mass, this is replaced by the recently proposed gapless CFL (gCFL) phase. I also find several other phases, for instance, a metallic CFL (mCFL) phase, a so-called uSC phase where all colors of up quarks are paired, as well as the standard two-flavor color-superconducting (2SC) phase and the gapless 2SC (g2SC) phase. I also study the phase diagram of dense, locally neutral three-flavor quark matter within the framework of a Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. In the analysis, dynamically generated quark masses are taken into account self-consistently. The phase diagram in the plane of temperature and quark chemical potential is presented. The results for two qualitatively different regimes, intermediate and strong diquark coupling strength, are presented. It is shown that the role of gapless phases diminishes with increasing diquark coupling strength. In addition, I study the effect of neutrino trapping on the phase diagram of dense, locally neutral three-flavor quark matter within the same NJL model. The phase diagrams in the plane of temperature and quark chemical potential, as well as in the plane of temperature and leptonnumber chemical potential are presented. I show that neutrino trapping favors two-flavor color superconductivity and disfavors the color–flavor-locked phase at intermediate densities of matter. At the same time, the location of the critical line separating the two-flavor color-superconducting phase and the normal phase of quark matter is little affected by the presence of neutrinos. The implications of these results for the evolution of protoneutron stars are briefly discussed.
The properties of the outer crust of non-accreting cold neutron stars are studied by using modern nuclear data and theoretical mass tables updating in particular the classic work of Baym, Pethick and Sutherland. Experimental data from the atomic mass table from Audi, Wapstra, and Thibault of 2003 is used and a thorough comparison of many modern theoretical nuclear models, relativistic and non-relativistic ones, is performed for the first time. In addition, the influences of pairing and deformation are investigated. State-of-the-art theoretical nuclear mass tables are compared in order to check their differences concerning the neutron dripline, magic neutron numbers, the equation of state, and the sequence of neutron-rich nuclei up to the dripline in the outer crust of non-accreting cold neutron stars.
We compare quark stars made of color-superconducting quark matter to normal-conducting quark stars. We focus on the most simple color-superconducting system, a two-flavor color superconductor, and employ the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model to compute the gap parameter and the equation of state. By varying the strength of the four-fermion coupling of the NJL model, we study the mass and the radius of the quark star as a function of the value of the gap parameter. If the coupling constant exceeds a critical value, the gap parameter does not vanish even at zero density. For coupling constants below this critical value, mass and radius of a color-superconducting quark star change at most by ca. 20% compared to a star consisting of normal-conducting quark matter. For coupling constants above the critical value mass and radius may change by factors of two or more.
We discuss the phase diagram of moderately dense, locally neutral three-flavor quark matter using the framework of an effective model of quantum chromodynamics with a local interaction. The phase diagrams in the plane of temperature and quark chemical potential as well as in the plane of temperature and lepton-number chemical potential are discussed.
We study the effect of neutrino trapping on the phase diagram of dense, locally neutral three-flavor quark matter within the framework of a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. In the analysis, dynamically generated quark masses are taken into account self-consistently. The phase diagrams in the plane of temperature and quark chemical potential, as well as in the plane of temperature and lepton-number chemical potential are presented. We show that neutrino trapping favors two-flavor color superconductivity and disfavors the color-flavor-locked phase at intermediate densities of matter. At the same time, the location of the critical line separating the two-flavor color-superconducting phase and the normal phase of quark matter is little affected by the presence of neutrinos. The implications of these results for the evolution of protoneutron stars are briefly discussed. PACS numbers: 12.39.-x 12.38.Aw 26.60.+c
We study the phase diagram of dense, locally neutral three-flavor quark matter within the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model.
We study the phase diagram of dense, locally neutral three-flavor quark matter as a function of the strange quark mass, the quark chemical potential, and the temperature, employing a general nine-parameter ansatz for the gap matrix. At zero temperature and small values of the strange quark mass, the ground state of matter corresponds to the color-flavor-locked (CFL) phase. At some critical value of the strange quark mass, this is replaced by the recently proposed gapless CFL (gCFL) phase. We also find several other phases, for instance, a metallic CFL (mCFL) phase, a so-called uSC phase where all colors of up quarks are paired, as well as the standard two-flavor color-superconducting (2SC) phase and the gapless 2SC (g2SC) phase.
The bulk viscosity of several quark matter phases is calculated. It is found that the effect of color superconductivity is not trivial, it may suppress, or enhance the bulk viscosity depending on the critical temperature and the temperature at which the bulk viscosity is calculated. Also, is it found that the effect of neutrino-emitting Urca processes cannot be neglected in the consideration of the bulk viscosity of strange quark matter. The results for the bulk viscosity of strange quark matter are used to calculate the r-mode instability window of quark stars with several possible phases. It is shown that each possible phase has a different structure for the r-mode instability window.
The 33S(n,α)30Si cross section measurement, using 10B(n,α) as reference, at the n_TOF Experimental Area 2 (EAR2) facility at CERN is presented. Data from 0.01 eV to 100 keV are provided and, for the first time, the cross section is measured in the range from 0.01 eV to 10 keV. These data may be used for a future evaluation of the cross section because present evaluations exhibit large discrepancies. The 33S(n,α)30Si reaction is of interest in medical physics because of its possible use as a cooperative target to boron in Neutron Capture Therapy (NCT).

Scanning Hall probe microscopy is attractive for minimally invasive characterization of magnetic thin films and nanostructures by measurement of the emanating magnetic stray field. Established sensor probes operating at room temperature employ highly miniaturized spin-valve elements or semimetals, such as Bi. As the sensor layer structures are fabricated by patterning of planar thin films, their adaption to custom-made sensor probe geometries is highly challenging or impossible. Here we show how nanogranular ferromagnetic Hall devices fabricated by the direct-write method of focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) can be tailor-made for any given probe geometry. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the magnetic stray field sensitivity can be optimized in situ directly after direct-write nanofabrication of the sensor element. First proof-of-principle results on the use of this novel scanning Hall sensor are shown.
New drugs are urgently needed to combat the global TB epidemic. Targeting simultaneously multiple respiratory enzyme complexes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is regarded as one of the most effective treatment options to shorten drug administration regimes, and reduce the opportunity for the emergence of drug resistance. During infection and proliferation, the cytochrome bd oxidase plays a crucial role for mycobacterial pathophysiology by maintaining aerobic respiration at limited oxygen concentrations. Here, we present the cryo-EM structure of the cytochrome bd oxidase from M. tuberculosis at 2.5 Å. In conjunction with atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies we discovered a previously unknown MK-9-binding site, as well as a unique disulfide bond within the Q-loop domain that defines an inactive conformation of the canonical quinol oxidation site in Actinobacteria. Our detailed insights into the long-sought atomic framework of the cytochrome bd oxidase from M. tuberculosis will form the basis for the design of highly specific drugs to act on this enzyme.
In this work we study compact stars, i.e. neutron stars, as cosmic laboratories for the nuclear matter. With a mass of around 1 - 3 solar masses and a radius of around 10km, compact stars are very dense and, besides nucleons, can contain exotic matter such as hyperons or quark matter. The KaoS collaboration studied nuclear matter for densities up to 2-3 times saturation density by analysing kaon multiplicities from Au+Au and C+C collisions. The results show that nuclear matter in the corresponding density region is very compressible, with a compressibility of <200MeV. For such soft nuclear equations of state the maximum masses of neutron stars are ca. 1.8 - 1.9 solar masses, whereas the central densities are higher than 5 times nuclear saturation density and therefore point towards a possible phase transition to quark matter. If quark matter would be present in the interior of neutron stars, so-called hybrid stars, it could be produced already during their birth in supernova explosions. To study this we implement a quark matter phase transition in a hadronic equation of state which is used in supernova simulations. Supernova simulations of low and intermediate mass progenitors and two different bag constants show a collapse of the proto neutron star due to the softening of the equations of state in the quark-hadron mixed phase. The stiffening of the equation of state for pure quark matter halts the collapse and leads to the production of a second shock wave. The second shock wave is energetic enough to lead to an explosion of the star and produces a neutrino burst when passing the neutrinospheres. Furthermore, first studies of the longtime cooling of hybrid stars show, that colour superconductivity can significantly influence the cooling behaviour of hybrid stars, if all quarks form Cooper Pairs. For the so-called CSL phase (colour-spin locking) with pairing energies of several MeV, the cooling of the quark phase is suppressed and the hybrid star appears as a pure hadronic star.
We present a novel equation of state which is based on the virial expansion for the multicomponent mixtures with hard core repulsion. The suggested equation of state explicitly contains the surface tension which is induced by particle interaction. At high densities such a surface tension vanishes and in this way it switches the excluded volume treatment of hard core repulsion to its eigen volume treatment. The great advantage of the developed model is that the number of equations to be solved is two and it does not depend on the number of independent hard-core radii. Using the suggested equation of state we obtained a high quality fit of the hadron multiplicities measured at AGS, SPS, RHIC and ALICE energies and studied the properties of the nuclear matter phase diagram. It is shown the developed equation of state is softer than the gas of hard spheres and remains causal up to the several normal nuclear densities. Therefore, it could be applied to the neutron star interior modeling.
Short range particle repulsion is rather important property of the hadronic and nuclear matter equations of state. We present a novel equation of state which is based on the virial expansion for the multicomponent mixtures with hard-core repulsion. In addition to the hard-core repulsion taken into account by the proper volumes of particles, this equation of state explicitly contains the surface tension which is induced by another part of the hard-core repulsion between particles. At high densities the induced surface tension vanishes and the excluded volume treatment of hard-core repulsion is switched to its proper volume treatment. Possible applications of this equation of state to a description of hadronic multiplicities measured in A+A collisions, to an investigation of the nuclear matter phase diagram properties and to the neutron star interior modeling are discussed.
The phase structure of the scalar field theory with arbitrary powers of the gradient operator and a local non-analytic potential is investigated by the help of the RG in Euclidean space. The RG equation for the generating function of the derivative part of the action is derived. Infinitely many non-trivial fixed points of the RG transformations are found. The corresponding effective actions are unbounded from below and do probably not exhibit any particle content. Therefore they do not provide physically sensible theories.
If the local color symmetry in a quark-gluon matter is broken, the expectation value of the gluon field 〈Aμa(x)〉 may be different from zero. Such a gluon-condensed phase has been found in mean field approximation. The gluon-condensed phase is characterized by a static, periodic chromomagnetic field, which is coupled to a periodic spin-color density distribution of quarks and antiquarks. Transitions of first and second order type have been found between the gluon-condensed and normal phases, the latter characterized by the vanishing value of the mean gluon field.
HADES experiment at GSI is the only high precision experiment probing nuclear matter in the beam energy range of a few AGeV. Pion, proton and ion beams are used to study rare dielectron and strangeness probes to diagnose properties of strongly interacting matter in this energy regime. Selected results from p + A and A + A collisions are presented and discussed.
Radiative transition of an excited baryon to a nucleon with emission of a virtual massive photon converting to dielectron pair (Dalitz decays) provides important information about baryon-photon coupling at low q2 in timelike region. A prominent enhancement in the respective electromagnetic transition Form Factors (etFF) at q2 near vector mesons ρ/ω poles has been predicted by various calculations reflecting strong baryon-vector meson couplings. The understanding of these couplings is also of primary importance for the interpretation of the emissivity of QCD matter studied in heavy ion collisions via dilepton emission. Dedicated measurements of baryon Dalitz decays in proton-proton and pion-proton scattering with HADES detector at GSI/FAIR are presented and discussed. The relevance of these studies for the interpretation of results obtained from heavy ion reactions is elucidated on the example of the HADES results.
This work reports on the study of the projectile x-ray emission in relativistic ion-atom collisions. Excitation of K-shell in He-like uranium ions, electron capture into H-like uranium ions and Simultaneous ionization and excitation of initially He-like uranium ions have been studied using the experimental storage ring at GSI. Information about the population of the excited states for the H- and He-like uranium ions, can be obtained by measuring the angular distribution of the decay radiation. Since the Ly_alpha2 transition is isotropic, the intensities of the Ly_alpha1 and K_alpha transitions were normalized to the Ly_alpha2 line. For the K_alpha1 and K_alpha2 transitions originating from the excitation of the He-like uranium ions, no alignment was observed. In contrast, the Ly_alpha1 radiation from the simultaneous ionization-excitation process of the He-like uranium ions shows a clear alignment. It is shown that the alignment of Ly_alpha1 was obtained by the Alignment parameter A_20. The experimental value leads to the inclusion of a magnetic term in the interaction potential. It is interesting to note that in the case of the Ly_alpha1 emission the small M2 contribution added coherently to the E1 transition amplitudes enhances the anisotropy. The capture process of target electrons into the highly-charged heavy ions was studied using H-like uranium ions at an incident energy of 220 MeV/u, impinging on N2 gas-target. It was shown that, the strongly aligned electrons captured in 2p3/2 level will couple with the available 1s1/2 electron which shows no initial directional preference. The magnetic sub-state population of the 2p3/2 electron will be redistributed according to the coupling rules to the magnetic sub-states of the relevant two-electron states. Consequently, the 1^P1 and 3^P2 states are corresponding to the the strongly aligned 2p3/2 state. This leads to the large anisotropy in the corresponding individual ground state transitions contributing to the K_alpha1 emission. Due to the fact that the 1^P1 --> 1^S0 and 3^P2 --> 1^S0 transitions are experimentally not resolved, a more detailed analysis of the angular dependence of the K_alpha1 radiation is required. From the K_alpha1/K_alpha2 ratio, the current results show that the incoherent addition of the E1 and M2 transition components yield to an almost isotropic emission of the total K_alpha1. In contrast to the radiative electron capture, the experimental results for the K-shell single excitation of He-like uranium ions indicate that only the 1^P1 level contributes to the K_alpha1 transition. For this case, the anisotropy parameter beta_20 was found to be -0.20 + 0.03 which is similar to that one calculated for pure E1 transition. This work also reports on the study of a two-electron process: the simultaneous ionization and excitation occurring in relativistic collisions of heavy highly-charged ions with gaseous targets. The investigation was performed on He-like uranium ions impinging upon xenon gas-target at an incident energy of 220 MeV/u. The measurements have been performed at the ESR gas-target using atomic xenon with a typical area density of 10^12 particles/cm^2. In contrast to the solid state target, the use of gas target offers the advantage of clear separation of the one step two-electron process due to the fact that the probability of two consecutive collision in such thin targets is negligible and the double step processes can be excluded. During the process of simultaneous ionization and excitation in He-like uranium ions, one of the ground-state electrons is promoted into the continuum and the other into the L-subshell states of the projectile. To select this process, the Lyman-series radiation has been measured at various observation angles in coincidence with up-charged projectiles (U^91+). From the yields of the Ly_alpha1 and Ly_alpha2 projectile radiation, the relative cross section for the process of simultaneous ionization and excitation was directly determined. The angle dependent measurement of the radiation yields provide information about the angular distributions of the emitted radiation and permits the determination of the alignment parameter A_{20}. This parameter gives information on the level population and the collision impact parameter. The present results (b^exp = 810 fm) show that the simultaneous ionization and excitation is a process which occurs at small impact parameter.
The characterization of microscopic properties in correlated low-dimensional materials is a challenging problem due to the effects of dimensionality and the interplay between the many different lattice and electronic degrees of freedom. Competition between these factors gives rise to interesting and exotic magnetic phenomena. An understanding of how these phenomena are driven by these degrees of freedom can be used for rational design of new materials, to control and manipulate these degrees of freedom in order to obtain desired properties. In this work, we study these effects in materials with small exchange interaction between the magnetic ions such as metal-organic and inorganic dilute compounds. We overcome the dfficulties in studying these kind of materials by combining classical and quantum mechanical ab initio methods and many-body theory methods in an effective theoretical approach. To treat metal-organic compounds we elaborate a novel two-step methodology which allows one to include quantum effects while reducing the computational cost. We show that our approach is an effective procedure, leading at each step, to additional insights into the essential features of the phenomena and materials under study. Our investigation is divided into two parts, the first one concerning the exploration of the fundamental physical properties of novel Cu(II) hydroquinone-based compounds. We have studied two representatives of this family, a polymeric system Cu(II)-2,5-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)-1,4-dihydroxybenzene (CuCCP) and a coupled system Cu2S2F6N8O12 (TK91). The second part concerns the study of magnetic phenomena associated with the interplay between different energy scales and dimensionality in zero-, one- and two-dimensional compounds. In the zero-dimensional case, we have performed a comprehensive study of Cu4OCl6L4 with L=diallylcyanamide=NC-N-(CH2-CH=CH2)2 (Cu4OCl6daca4). Interpretations of the magnetic properties for this tetrameric compound have been controversial and inconsistent. From our studies, we conclude that the common models usually applied to this and other representatives in the same family of cluster systems fail to provide a consistent description of their low temperature magnetic properties and we thus postulate that in such systems it is necessary to take into account quantum fluctuations due to possible frustrated behavior. In the one-dimensional case, we studied polymeric Fe(II)-triazole compounds, which are of special relevance due to the possibility of inducing a spin transition between low and high spin state by applying a external perturbation. A long standing problem has been a satisfactory microscopic explanation of this large cooperative phenomenon. A lack of X-ray data has been one mitigating reason for the absence of microscopic studies. In this work, we present a novel approach to the understanding of the microscopic mechanism of spin crossover in such systems and show that in these kind of compounds magnetic exchange between high spin Fe(II) centers plays an important role. The correct description of the underlying physics in many materials is often hindered by the presence of anisotropies. To illustrate this difficulty, we have studied a two dimensional dilute compound K2V3O8 which exhibits an unusual spin reorientation effect when applying magnetic fields. While this effect can be understood when considering anisotropies in the system, it is not sufficient to reproduce experimental observations. Based on our studies of the electronic and magnetic properties in this system, we predict an extra exchange interaction and the presence of an additional magnetic moment at the non-magnetic V site. This sheds a new light into the controversial recent experimental data for the magnetic properties of this material.
Hadron lists based on experimental studies summarized by the Particle Data Group (PDG) are a crucial input for the equation of state and thermal models used in the study of strongly-interacting matter produced in heavy-ion collisions. Modeling of these strongly-interacting systems is carried out via hydrodynamical simulations, which are followed by hadronic transport codes that also require a hadronic list as input. To remain consistent throughout the different stages of modeling of a heavy-ion collision, the same hadron list with its corresponding decays must be used at each step. It has been shown that even the most uncertain states listed in the PDG from 2016 are required to reproduce partial pressures and susceptibilities from Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics with the hadronic list known as the PDG2016+. Here, we update the hadronic list for use in heavy-ion collision modeling by including the latest experimental information for all states listed in the Particle Data Booklet in 2021. We then compare our new list, called PDG2021+, to Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics results and find that it achieves even better agreement with the first principles calculations than the PDG2016+ list. Furthermore, we develop a novel scheme based on intermediate decay channels that allows for only binary decays, such that PDG2021+ will be compatible with the hadronic transport framework SMASH. Finally, we use these results to make comparisons to experimental data and discuss the impact on particle yields and spectra.
We present a numerical investigation of energy and charge distributions during electron-beam-induced growth of tungsten nanostructures on SiO2 substrates by using a Monte Carlo simulation of the electron transport. This study gives a quantitative insight into the deposition of energy and charge in the substrate and in the already existing metallic nanostructures in the presence of the electron beam. We analyze electron trajectories, inelastic mean free paths, and the distribution of backscattered electrons in different compositions and at different depths of the deposit. We find that, while in the early stages of the nanostructure growth a significant fraction of electron trajectories still interacts with the substrate, when the nanostructure becomes thicker the transport takes place almost exclusively in the nanostructure. In particular, a larger deposit density leads to enhanced electron backscattering. This work shows how mesoscopic radiation-transport techniques can contribute to a model that addresses the multi-scale nature of the electron-beam-induced deposition (EBID) process. Furthermore, similar simulations can help to understand the role that is played by backscattered electrons and emitted secondary electrons in the change of structural properties of nanostructured materials during post-growth electron-beam treatments.
The aim of the present overview article is to raise awareness of an essential aspect that is usually not accounted for in the modelling of electron transport for focused-electron-beam-induced deposition (FEBID) of nanostructures: Surface excitations are on the one hand responsible for a sizeable fraction of the intensity in reflection-electron-energy-loss spectra for primary electron energies of up to a few kiloelectronvolts and, on the other hand, they play a key role in the emission of secondary electrons from solids, regardless of the primary energy. In this overview work we present a general perspective of recent works on the subject of surface excitations and on low-energy electron transport, highlighting the most relevant aspects for the modelling of electron transport in FEBID simulations.
In nuclear physics, superheavy and hypernuclei are two of the most important fields of research. The prediction of islands of superheavy elements (Z = 114, N = 184, 196 and Z = 164, N = 318) in late sixties by the Frankfurt school played a key role in extending the periodic table of elements up to atomic number 118. Similarly, the demonstration that nuclear matter can be compressed 510 times of its original volume by nuclear shock waves, produced during heavy ion collision, led to the production of singleand double-lambda hypernuclei, as well as anti-matter nuclei. Recent observation of antihypertriton—comprising an antiproton, an antineutron, and an antilambda hyperon, by the STAR collaboration has now made it possible to envision a 3-dimensional nuclear chart of hypernuclei. My own interest in superheavy and hypernuclei was shaped from my first meeting with Walter Greiner at the International Conference on Atomic and Nuclear clusters held at Santorini, Greece in 1993. I will present a brief summary of these exciting developments, including some of our own work. Professor Greiner’s vision, enthusiasm, and encouragement touched many lives and I was one of those privileged ones.
We present a detailed investigation of X-ray emission from both flat and nanowire zinc oxide targets irradiated by 60 fs 5 × 1016 W/cm2 intensity laser pulses at a 0.8 µm wavelength. It is shown that the fluence of the emitted hard X-ray radiation in the spectral range 150–800 keV is enhanced by at least one order of magnitude for nanowire targets compared to the emission from a flat surface, whereas the characteristic Kα line emission (8.64 keV) is insensitive to the target morphology. Furthermore, we provide evidence for a dramatic increase of the fast electron flux from the front side of the nanostructured targets. We suggest that targets with nanowire morphology may advance development of compact ultrafast X-ray sources with an enhanced flux of hard X-ray emission that could find wide applications in highenergy density (HED) physics.
Inclusive energy spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons were measured with a telescope of silicon and germanium detectors with a detection range for proton energies up to 200 MeV. Fifteen sets of data were taken using projectiles ranging from protons to 40Ar on targets from 27Al to 238U at bombarding energies from 240 MeV/nucleon to 2.1 GeV/nucleon. Particular attention was paid to the absolute normalization of the cross sections. For three previously reported reactions, He fragment cross sections have been corrected and are presented. To facilitate a comparison with theory the sum of nucleonic charges emitted as protons plus composite particles was estimated and is presented as a function of fragment energy per nucleon in the interval from 15 to 200 MeV/nucleon. For low-energy fragments at forward angles the protons account for only 25% of the nucleonic charges. The equal mass 40Ar plus Ca systems were examined in the center of mass. Here at 0.4 GeV/nucleon 40Ar plus Ca the proton spectra appear to be nearly isotropic in the center of mass over the region measured. Comparisons of some data with firestreak, cascade, and fluid dynamics models indicate a failure of the first and a fair agreement with the latter two. In addition, associated fast charged particle multiplicities (where the particles had energies larger than 25 MeV/nucleon) and azimuthal correlations were measured with an 80 counter array of plastic scintillators. It was found that the associated multiplicities were a smooth function of the total kinetic energy of the projectile. Exclusive pi - and charged-particle production in collisions of Ar+KCl is studied at incident energies from 0.4 to 1.8 GeV/u. Complete disintegration of both nuclei is observed. The correlation between pi - and total charge multiplicity shows no islands of anomalous pion production. For constant numbers of proton participants the pi - multiplicity distributions are Poissons. For central collisions <n pi -> increases smoothly and to first order linearly with the c.m. energy. Disagreement with the firestreak model is found. Pacs numbers: 25.70.Hi, 24.10.Dp
ϕ-meson production in In–In collisions at Elab=158A GeV: Evidence for relics of a thermal phase
(2010)
Yields and transverse mass distributions of the ϕ-mesons reconstructed in the ϕ→μ+μ− channel in In+In collisions at Elab=158A GeV are calculated within an integrated Boltzmann+hydrodynamics hybrid approach based on the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) transport model with an intermediate hydrodynamic stage. The analysis is performed for various centralities and a comparison with the corresponding NA60 data in the muon channel is presented. We find that the hybrid model, that embeds an intermediate locally equilibrated phase subsequently mapped into the transport dynamics according to thermal phase-space distributions, gives a good description of the experimental data, both in yield and slope. On the contrary, the pure transport model calculations tend to fail in catching the general properties of the ϕ meson production: not only the yield, but also the slope of the mT spectra, compare poorly with the experimental observations at top SPS energies.
HADES is a fixed target experiment using SIS18 heavy-ion beams. It investigates the microscopic properties of matter formed in heavy-ion, proton and pion - induced reactions in the 1-3.5 GeV/u energy regime. In 2014 HADES used a secondary pion beam produced by interaction between high-intensity nitrogen primary beam and a beryllium target. In these conditions beam losses, generated by slow extraction and beam transport to the experimental area, led to activation of the beam line elements and triggered radiation alarms. The primary beam intensity had to be reduced and the beam optics modified in order to keep radiation levels within the allowed limits. Similar beam conditions are requested by HADES experiment for upcoming run in 2018 and in the following years. Therefore, a number of measures have been proposed to improve beam transmission and quality. These measures are: additional shielding, additional beam instrumentation, modification of beam optics and increase of vacuum chambers' apertures in critical locations. The optics study and preliminary results of FLUKA simulations for optimization of location of loss detectors are presented.
GSI High Energy Beam Transfer lines (HEST) link the SIS18 synchrotron with two storage rings (Experimental Storage Ring and Cryring) and six experimental caves. The recent upgrades to HEST beam instrumentation enables precise measurements of beam properties along the lines and allow for faster and more precise beams setup on targets. Preliminary results of some of the measurements performed during runs in 2018 and 2019 are presented here. The focus is on response matrix measurements and quadrupole scans performed on HADES beam line. The errors and future improvements are discussed.
Neurons are cells with a highly complex morphology; their dendritic arbor spans up to thousands of micrometers. This extended arbor poses a challenge for the logistics of neuronal processes: mRNA, proteins, and organelles have to be transported to dendrites, hundreds of micrometers away from the soma. This thesis aims to calculate the minimum number of proteins needed to populate the dendritic trees for different scenarios.
In chapter 2, I analyzed the ability of different mechanisms to populate the dendritic arbor. I started from the solution of the diffusion equation in Sec. 2.1, then I included the contribution of active transport in Sec. 2.2 and showed how it could have either the effect of increasing the effective diffusion coefficient or of introducing a bias in the diffusion process. In Sec. 2.3 I studied the spatial distribution of locally synthesized protein, accordingly with actively and passively transported mRNA. In Sec. 2.5, I derived the boundary condition for branches showing a qualitatively different behavior of surface and cytoplasmic proteins induced by the medium’s dimensionality in which they diffuse.
In chapter 3, I introduced the concept of protein requirement, defined as the minimum number of proteins that the neuron needs to produce to provide at least one protein to each micrometer of the dendritic arbor. In Sec. 3.1, I derived the protein requirement for diffusive proteins for somatic translation and constant translation in the dendritic arbor. In Sec. 3.2, I analyzed numerically the protein requirement in the case of actively transported protein synthesized in the soma, and, in Sec. 3.3, in the case of actively transported proteins synthesized in the dendritic arbor. In Sec. 3.4, I analyzed the protein requirement of protein synthesized in the dendrite accordingly with the distribution of mRNA described in Sec. 3.3 and 3.2. In Sec. 3.5, I derived the protein requirement for a single branch and purely diffusive proteins.
In chapter 4, I analyzed the relation between the radii of the three afferent dendrites in a branch, their length, and the diffusion length of a protein. In Sec. 4.1 I derived the optimal ratio between the radii of the daughter dendrites that minimizes the protein requirement. In Sec. 4.3 I introduced the 3/2− Rall Rule and in Sec. 4.5 its generalization. Finally, I used those rules to estimate the fraction of proteins diffusing away from and toward the soma.
In chapter 5, I analyzed the radii distribution for three categories of neurons: cultured hippocampal neurons in Sec. 5.1, stomatogastric ganglia neuron in Sec. 5.2, and 3DEM reconstructed prefrontal pyramidal neurons in Sec. 5.3. For each of these three classes, I analyzed the distribution of radii, Rall exponents, and the probability ratio. For most of them, I found that the probability of a protein diffusing away from the soma is higher for surface proteins than for cytoplasmic ones. I quantified this with a parameter called surface bias.
In Chapter 6, I analyzed the fluorescent ratio imaged by our collaborators Anne-Sophie Hafner, for a surface protein, GFP::Nlg, and a soluble one, GFP, in cultured hippocampal neurons, and I compared the fluorescent ratio with the probability ratio obtained in 5.1, finding that they are in good agreement.
In chapter 7, I compared the real dendritic morphologies imaged by one of our collaborators Ali Karimi with the optimal branching rule obtained in Sec. 4.1 and I calculated the cost for not having optimal branching radii.
Finally, in Chapter 8, I used the knowledge of the branching statistics gathered in 5.3 to simulate the protein profile on three different classes of neurons: pyramidal neurons, granule neuron, and Purkinje neurons. I compared the protein profile for surface and cytoplasmic neurons for each morphology for two different values of the diffusion length: λ = 109µm and λ = 473µm, both for optimized radii and symmetrical radii. I showed how the radii optimization reduces the protein requirement of a factor 10 4 for pyramidal neurons.
The production of light neutral mesons in AA collisions probes the physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), which is formed in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. More specifically, the centrality dependent neutral meson spectra in AA collisions compared to its spectra in minimum-bias pp collisions, scaled with the number of hard collisions, provides information on the energy loss of partons traversing the QGP. The measurement allows to test with high precision the predictions of theoretical model calculations. In addition, the decay of the π0 and η mesons are the dominant back- grounds for all direct photon measurements. Therefore, pushing the limits of the precision of neutral meson production is key to learning about the temperature and space-time evolution of the QGP.
In the ALICE experiment neutral mesons can be detected via their decay into two photons. The latter can be reconstructed using the two calorimeters EMCal and PHOS or via conversions in the detector material. The excellent momentum resolution of the conversion photons down to very low pT and the high reconstruction efficiency and triggering capability of calorimeters at high pT, allow us to measure the pT dependent invariant yield of light neutral mesons over a wide kinematic range.
Combining state-of-the-art reconstruction techniques with the high statistics delivered by the LHC in Run 2 gives us the opportunity to enhance the precision of our measurements. In these proceedings, new ALICE run 2 preliminary results for neutral meson production in pp and Pb–Pb collisions at LHC energies are presented.
We derive the Polyakov-loop thermodynamic potential in the perturbative approach to pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. The potential expressed in terms of the Polyakov loop in the fundamental representation corresponds to that of the strong-coupling expansion, of which the relevant coefficients of the gluon energy distribution are specified by characters of the SU(3) group. At high temperature, the potential exhibits the correct asymptotic behavior, whereas at low temperature, it disfavors gluons as appropriate dynamical degrees of freedom. To quantify the Yang-Mills thermodynamics in confined phase, we introduce a hybrid approach which matches the effective gluon potential to that of glueballs, constrained by the QCD trace anomaly in terms of dilaton fields.
We propose an effective theory of SU(3) gluonic matter where interactions between color-electric and color-magnetic gluons are constrained by the center and scale symmetries. Through matching to the dimensionally-reduced magnetic theories, the magnetic gluon condensate qualitatively changes its thermal behavior above the critical temperature. We argue its phenomenological consequences for the thermodynamics, in particular the dynamical breaking of scale invariance.
We develop a 1+1 dimensional hydrodynamical model for central heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. Deviations from Bjorken's scaling are taken into account by implementing finite-size profiles for the initial energy density. The calculated rapidity distributions of pions, kaons and antiprotons in central Au+Au collisions at the c.m. energy 200 AGeV are compared with experimental data of the BRAHMS Collaboration. The sensitivity of the results to the choice of the equation of state, the parameters of initial state and the freeze-out conditions is investigated. The best fit of experimental data is obtained for a soft equation of state and Gaussian-like initial profiles of the energy density.
We study Mach shocks generated by fast partonic jets propagating through a deconfined strongly-interacting matter. Our main goal is to take into account different types of collective motion during the formation and evolution of this matter. We predict a significant deformation of Mach shocks in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC and LHC energies as compared to the case of jet propagation in a static medium. The observed broadening of the near-side two-particle correlations in pseudorapidity space is explained by the Bjorken-like longitudinal expansion. Three-particle correlation measurements are proposed for a more detailed study of the Mach shock waves.
We derive three exact sum rules for the spectral function of the electromagnetic current with zero spatial momentum at finite temperature. Possible applications of the three sum rules to lattice computations of the spectral function and transport coefficients are also discussed: We propose an ansatz for the spectral function that can be applied to all three sum rules and fit it to available lattice data of the Euclidean vector correlator above the critical temperature. As a result, we obtain estimates for both the electrical conductivity σ and the second order transport coefficient τJ.
Recent data of the HADES Collaboration in Au+Au central collisions at sNN=2.4 GeV indicate large proton number fluctuations inside one unit of rapidity around midrapidity. This can be a signature of critical phenomena due to the strong attractive interactions between baryons. We study an alternative hypothesis that these large fluctuations are caused by the event-by-event fluctuations of the number of bare protons, and no interactions between these protons are assumed. The proton number fluctuations in five symmetric rapidity intervals Δy inside the region ΔY=1 are calculated using the binomial acceptance procedure. This procedure assumes the independent (uncorrelated) emission of protons, and it appears to be in agreement with the HADES data. To check this simple picture we suggest to calculate the correlation between proton multiplicities in non-overlapping rapidity intervals Δy1 and Δy2 placed inside ΔY=1.
We point out that the variance of net-baryon distribution normalized by the Skellam distribution baseline, κ2[B−B¯]/〈B+B¯〉, is sensitive to the possible modification of (anti)baryon yields due to BB¯ annihilation in the hadronic phase. The corresponding measurements can thus place stringent limits on the magnitude of the BB¯ annihilation and its inverse reaction. We perform Monte Carlo simulations of the hadronic phase in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC via the recently developed subensemble sampler + UrQMD afterburner and show that the effect survives in net-proton fluctuations, which are directly accessible experimentally. The available experimental data of the ALICE Collaboration on net-proton fluctuations disfavors a notable suppression of (anti)baryon yields in BB¯ annihilations predicted by the present version of UrQMD if only global baryon conservation is incorporated. On the other hand, the annihilations improve the data description when local baryon conservation is imposed. The two effects can be disentangled by measuring κ2[B+B¯]/〈B+B¯〉, which at the LHC is notably suppressed by annihilations but virtually unaffected by baryon number conservation.
The so-called Pygmy Dipole Resonance, an additional structure of low-lying electric dipole strength, has attracted strong interest in the last years. Different experimental approaches have been used in the last decade in order to investigate this new interesting nuclear excitation mode. In this contribution an overview on the available experimental data is given.
Design and optimization of the lattice of the superconducting synchrotron SIS300 for slow extraction
(2011)
The superconducting synchrotron SIS300 is planned to be built at the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), at GSI-Darmstadt [1]. SIS300 will be a versatile machine, which by means of a low-energy stretcher-mode or a high-energy ramped-mode will provide slowly extracted heavy ion beams towards the experimental areas. To reach the required maximum field of 4.5 T, cos(θ) magnets are necessary. Thus, SIS300 will become the first superconducting synchrotron worldwide with cos(θ) magnets providing resonant slow extraction.
Since SIS300 will be installed in the same tunnel as the SIS100 synchrotron, the dipole layout of SIS300 cannot be freely chosen. Thus, a standard lattice cannot be applied. A redesign of the SIS300 lattice accepting compromises concerning the positions and phase advances between the optical elements has been proposed. Using the analytical model of the slow extraction, firstly proposed by Kobayashi, and the analytical description of the resonance driving modes, a multiobjective optimization algorithm has been developed for the optimization of the lattice under the given boundary conditions. The final goal of the lattice optimization is a higher efficiency of the slow extraction. The results are evaluated by means of tracking simulations performed with the code Elegant.
The field quality in superconducting cos(θ) magnets is determined by the positions of the superconducting cable and the static and time-dependent effects of the current in the cable. Furthermore, the fast ramp rates of 1 T/s in the dipoles, which are fifty times faster than in any other superconducting cos(θ) magnet, together with the fact that the aperture is smaller than in conventional accelerator magnets, makes it extremely difficult to obtain a high-quality magnetic field. The unavoidable field errors affect the beam dynamics and worsen the slow extraction efficiency. Therefore, the field errors in the SIS300 dipoles have been estimated, and their effects have been taken into account in the optimization algorithm. As a result a compensation scheme has been proposed, in which time-dependent gradients in the sextupoles counteract the decay of the sextupole field errors in the dipole magnets during the slow extraction. For the limits where the compensation was no longer possible, tolerances to the magnet field errors have been determined.
The SIS300 synchrotron, planned for the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI-Darmstadt, will become the first superconducting synchrotron worldwide using cos(θ) magnets for resonant slow extraction. A multi-objective optimization algorithm has been developed for the design of the non-linear magnet scheme. The optimization algorithm makes use of the analytical model for the slow extraction from Kobayashi, the analytical description of the resonance excitation and amplitude-dependent tune-shift from Bengtsson, and corrects the chromaticity in order to fulfill the Hardt condition. As a result, the placement of the chromatic and harmonic sextupole magnets in SIS300, the number of sextupole families and the gradients of these families have been optimized for a high efficiency slow extraction. The algorithm accounts also for the sextupole errors on the dipole magnets, compensating its effects. Furthermore, optimized time-dependent settings for the sextupole magnets are generated to compensate the persistent current decay occurring at slow extraction. Tolerances for the magnets are set for the limits where the compensation is no longer valid.
Strange hadronic matter
(1993)
In an extended mean field theory, we find a large class of bound multistrange objects, formed from combinations of {p,n,Λ,Ξ0,Ξ-} baryons, which are stable against strong decay. We predict a maximal binding energy per baryon of EB/A≊-21 MeV, strangeness per baryon fs≊1.2, charge per baryon fq≊-0.1 to 0, and baryon density 2.5–3 times that of ordinary nuclei. For A≥6, we obtain stable combinations involving only {Λ,Ξ0,Ξ-} hyperons.
Relativistic heavy ion collisions constitute a prolific source of hyperons: tens of hyperons per event are predicted at energies E≥10 GeV/nucleon, providing a scenario for the formation of metastable exotic multihypernuclear objects. They may exhibit exceptional properties: bound neutral (e.g., 4M2Λ2n, 10M2Λ8n, pure Λ droplets, 8Λ) and even negatively charged composites objects with positive baryon number (e.g., 4M2Σ-2n, 6M2Λ2Ξ-2n) could be formed in rare events. Such negative nuclei can easily be identified in a magnetic spectrometer. They could be considerably more abundant than antinuclei of the same A. We use the relativistic meson-baryon field theory—which gives an excellent description of normal nuclear and single-Λ hypernuclear properties—to calculate the rich spectrum of such exotic objects, their stability, and their structure. We also find solutions for a large variety of bound short-lived nuclei (e.g., 8M2Λ,2Σ-2p2n), which may decay strongly via formation of cascade (Ξ) particles. Multi-Ξ hypernuclei are also evaluated. A variety of potential candidates for such metastable exotic nuclei is presented. It turns out that the properties of such exotic multihypernuclear objects reveal quite similar features as the strangelet proposed as a unique signature for quark-gluon plasma formation in heavy ion collisions.
The modern phase diagram of strongly interacting matter reveals a rich structure at high-densities
due to phase transitions related to the chiral symmetry of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and
the phenomenon of color superconductivity. These exotic phases have a significant impact on
high-density astrophysics, such as the properties of neutron stars, and the evolution of astrophysical systems as proto-neutron stars, core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers. Most recent pulsar mass measurements and constraints on neutron star radii are critically discussed.
Astrophysical signals for exotic matter and phase transitions in high-density matter proposed recently in the literature are outlined. A strong first order phase transition leads to the emergence of a third family of compact stars besides white dwarfs and neutron stars. The different microphysics of quark matter results in an enhanced r-mode stability window for rotating compact stars compared to normal neutron stars. Future telescope and satellite data will be used to extract signals from phase transitions in dense matter in the heavens and will reveal properties of the phases of dense QCD. Spectral line profiles out of x-ray bursts will determine the mass-radius ratio of compact stars. Gravitational wave patterns from collapsing neutron stars or neutron star mergers will even be able to constrain the stiffness of the quark matter equation of state. Future astrophysical data can therefore provide a crucial cross-check to the exploration of the QCD phase diagram with the heavy-ion program of the CBM detector at the FAIR facility.
We discuss the properties of two distinct forms of hypothetical strange matter, small lumps of strange quark matter (strangelets) and of hyperon matter (metastable exotic multihypernuclear objects: MEMOs), with special empha- sis on their relevance for present and future heavy ion experiments. The masses of small strangelets up to AB = 40 are calculated using the MIT bag model with shell mode filling for various bag parameters. The strangelets are checked for possible strong and weak hadronic decays, also taking into account multiple hadron decays. It is found that strangelets which are stable against strong decay are most likely highly negative charged, contrary to previous findings. Strangelets can be stable against weak hadronic decay but their masses and charges are still rather high. This has serious impact on the present high sensitivity searches in heavy ion experiments at the AGS and CERN facilities. On the other hand, highly charged MEMOs are predicted on the basis of an extended relativistic mean field model. Those objects could be detected in future experiments searching for short lived, rare composites. It is demonstrated that future experiments can be sensitive to a much wider variety of strangelets.
We examine the properties of both forms of strange matter, small lumps of strange quark matter (strangelets) and of strange hadronic matter (Metastable Exotic Multihypernuclear Objects: MEMOs) and their relevance for present and future heavy ion searches. The strong and weak decays are discussed separately to distinguish between long-lived and short-lived candidates where the former ones are detectable in present heavy ion experiments while the latter ones in future heavy ion experiments, respectively. We find some long-lived strangelet candidates which are highly negatively charged with a mass to charge ratio like a anti deuteron (M/Z 2) but masses of A=10 to 16. We predict also many short-lived candidates, both in quark and in hadronic form, which can be highly charged. Purely hyperonic nuclei like the (2 02 ) are bound and have a negative charge while carrying a positive baryon number. We demonstrate also that multiply charmed exotics (charmlets) might be bound and can be produced at future heavy ion colliders.
Recent progress in the understanding of the high density phase of neutron stars advances the view that a substantial fraction of the matter consists of hyperons. The possible impacts of a highly attractive interaction between hyperons on the properties of compact stars are investigated. We find that a hadronic equation of state with hyperons allows for a first order phase transition to hyperonic matter. The corresponding hyperon stars can have rather small radii of R ~ 8 km. Recent progress in the understanding of the high density phase of neutron stars advances the view that a substantial fraction of the matter consists of hyperons. The possible impacts of a highly attractive interaction between hyperons on the properties of compact stars is investigated. We find that the equation of state exhibits a second stable minimum at large hyperon contents which is in accord with existing hypernuclear data. This second solution gives rise to new effects for neutron star properties which are similar to the ones proposed for the deconfinement transition to strange quark matter and absolutely stable strange stars. We find that the corresponding hyperstars can have rather small radii of R=6-8 km independent of the mass. PACS: 26.60+c, 21.65+f, 97.60.Gb, 97.60.Jd

The possible role of a first order QCD phase transition at nonvanishing quark chemical potential and temperature for cold neutron stars and for supernovae is delineated. For cold neutron stars, we use the NJL model with nonvanishing color superconducting pairing gaps, which describes the phase transition to the 2SC and the CFL quark matter phases at high baryon densities. We demonstrate that these two phase transitions can both be present in the core of neutron stars and that they lead to the appearance of a third family of solution for compact stars. In particular, a core of CFL quark matter can be present in stable compact star configurations when slightly adjusting the vacuum pressure to the onset of the chiral phase transition from the hadronic model to the NJL model. We show that a strong first order phase transition can have strong impact on the dynamics of core collapse supernovae. If the QCD phase transition sets in shortly after the first bounce, a second outgoing shock wave can be generated which leads to an explosion. The presence of the QCD phase transition can be read off from the neutrino and antineutrino signal of the supernova.
Different numerical approaches and algorithms arising in the context of modelling of cellular tissue evolution are discussed in this thesis. Being suited in particular to off-lattice agent-based models, the numerical tool of three-dimensional weighted kinetic and dynamic Delaunay triangulations is introduced and discussed for its applicability to adjacency detection. As there exists no implementation of a code that incorporates all necessary features for tissue modelling, algorithms for incremental insertion or deletion of points in Delaunay triangulations and the restoration of the Delaunay property for triangulations of moving point sets are introduced. In addition, the numerical solution of reaction-diffusion equations and their connection to agent-based cell tissue simulations is discussed. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the numerical algorithms, biological problems are studied for different model systems: For multicellular tumour spheroids, the weighted Delaunay triangulation provides a great advantage for adjacency detection, but due to the large cell numbers the model used for the cell-cell interaction has to be simplified to allow for a numerical solution. The agent-based model reproduces macroscopic experimental signatures, but some parameters cannot be fixed with the data available. A much simpler, but in key properties analogous, continuum model based on reaction-diffusion equations is likewise capable of reproducing the experimental data. Both modelling approaches make differing predictions on non-quantified experimental signatures. In the case of the epidermis, a smaller system is considered which enables a more complete treatment of the equations of motion. In particular, a control mechanism of cell proliferation is analysed. Simple assumptions suffice to explain the flow equilibrium observed in the epidermis. In addition, the effect of adhesion on the survival chances of cancerous cells is studied. For some regions in parameter space, stochastic effects may completely alter the outcome. The findings stress the need of establishing a defined experimental model to fix the unknown model parameters and to rule out further models.
A two-center shell model with oscillator potentials, l→·s→ forces, and l→2 terms is developed. The shell structures of the original spherical nucleus and those of the final fragments are reproduced. For small separation of the two centers the level structure resembles the Nilsson scheme. This two-center shell model might be of importance in problems of nuclear fission.
In April and May 2012 data on Au+Au collisions at beam energies of Ekin = 1.23A GeV were recorded with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer, which is located at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany. At this beam energy all hadrons containing strangeness are produced below their elementary production threshold. The required energy is not available in binary NN collisions but must be provided by the system e.g. through multi-particle interactions or medium effects like a modified in-medium potential (e.g. KN/ΛN potential). Thus, a high sensitivity to these medium effects is expected in the investigated system.
The baryon-dominated systems created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions (HIC) at SIS18 energies reach densities of about 2-3 times ground state density p0 and may be similar to the properties of matter expected in the inner core of neutron stars. It is in particular the behavior of hadrons containing strangeness, i.e. kaons and hyperons, and their potentials in the dense medium which may have severe implications on astrophysical objects and processes. As ab-initio calculations of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) cannot be performed rigorously on the lattice at finite baryo-chemical potentials due to the fermion sign problem, effective descriptions have to be used in order to model properties of dense systems and the involved particles. The only way to access the in-medium potential of strange hadrons above nuclear ground state density p0 is by comparing data from relativistic HIC to such effective microscopic models. Up to now, not much data on neutral kaons and Λ hyperons are available from heavy collision systems close to their NN production threshold. These two electromagnetically uncharged strange hadrons are in particular well suited to study their potential in a dense nucleon-dominated environment as their kinematic spectra are not affected by Coulomb interactions.
Heavy quarks are useful probes to investigate the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC, since they are produced in initial hard scattering processes. To single out the signals that are characteristic of the QGP, it is nevertheless crucial to understand the primordial heavy-quark production in vacuum, and to disentangle hot from cold nuclear matter effects. Moreover, observations of collective effects in high-multiplicity pp and p-Pb collisions show surprising similarities with those in heavy-ion collisions. Heavy-flavour production in such collisions could give further insight into the underlying processes. The heavy-flavour production can be studied with e+e− pairs from correlated semileptonic decays of heavy-flavour hadrons. Compared to single heavy-flavour measurements, the dielectron yield contains information about the initial kinematical correlations between the charm and anti-charm quarks, which is otherwise not accessible, and is sensitive to soft heavy-flavour production. We report results on correlated e+e− pairs in pp collisions recorded by the ALICE detector at different collision energies. The production of heavy quarks is discussed by comparing the yield of dielectrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of invariant mass, pair transverse momentum and distance of closest approach to the primary vertex with different Monte Carlo event generators. The heavy-flavour production cross sections are also presented. Results from high-multiplicity pp collisions at √s=13 TeV and the status of the p-Pb analysis at √sNN=5.02 TeV are reported as well.

Dielectrons are an excellent probe for the QCD matter created in created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, since they are emitted during the whole evolution of the collision and do not interact strongly with the medium. To isolate the QGP signals, measurement of the dielectron production in vacuum and its modifications due to the presence of cold nuclear matter is necessary. We present and discuss results from a low magnetic field detector setup in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV, as well as the measurement of dielectron production in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5 TeV.
