We show that information about quasimolecular electronic binding energies in transient atomic systems of Z=Z1+Z2 up to 184 can be obtained from three sources: (1) the impact-parameter dependence of the ionization probability; (2) the ionization probability in head-on collisions as a function of total nuclear charge Z; (3) the delta-electron spectrum in coincidence with K-vacancy formation in asymmetric collisions. Experiments are proposed and discussed.
A careful investigation of different corrections to binding energies of electrons in almost critical fields is performed. We investigate quantitatively the influence of the nuclear charge parameters, nuclear mass, degree of ionization on the value of the critical charge of the nucleus. Rather qualitative arguments are given to establish the contribution of the quantumelectrodynamic corrections, which are found to be small. Some phenomenological modifications of QED are quantitatively investigated and found to be of negligible influence on the value of the critical field. For heavy ion collisions with Z1+Z2>Zcr the critical separations between ions are given as results of precise solutions of the relativistic two coulomb center problem. Corrections due to electron-electron interaction are considered. We find (with present theoretical accuracy) Zcr=173±2, in the heavy ion collisions Rcr(U-U) = 34.7±2 fm and Rcr (U-Cf)=47.7±2 fm. We shortly consider the possibility of spontaneous muon production in muonic supercritical fields.
Inner-shell ionization induced by nuclear Coulomb excitation in collisions of very heavy ions
(1978)
K- and L-shell ionization of 238U with Xe and U projectiles is investigated. Internal conversion following nuclear Coulomb excitation which is particularly important for deformed heavy nuclei is compared with direct ionization of inner-shell electrons in superheavy quasimolecules. Both processes exhibit different impact-parameter dependences. As a result of internal conversion, about 0.1-0.3 K holes per central collision are created.
In view of new high-precision experiments in atomic physics it seems necessary to reexamine nonlinear theories of electrodynamics. The precise calculation of electronic and muonic atomic energies has been used to determine the possible size of the upper limit Emax to the electric field strength, which has been assumed to be a parameter. This is opposed to Born's idea of a purely electromagnetic origin of the electron's mass which determines Emax. We find Emax≥1.7×1020 V/cm.
We calculate the spin polarization of 1sσ vacancies and emitted δ electrons induced by the strong magnetic field (|Bmax|∼1016G) in collisions of very heavy ions (Z1+Z2=178). The electron excitations are determined by the solution of coupled-channel equations within the quasimolecular basis states including the vector potential. The formulation is extended to the many-electron case. Spin polarizations of the order of 5-10% for impact energies below the Coulomb barrier are predicted.
The theory of direct electron-positron pair production in the collision of heavy ions is formulated in the framework of the quasimolecular model. The pair production process acquires a collective nature for (Z1+Z2)α>1 and can be understood as the shakeoff of the strong vacuum polarization cloud formed in the quasimolecule. The total cross section is, e.g., 76 μb for Pb + Pb at Coulomb barrier energies.
This paper reports calculations of the influence of a reaction time T>10-21 s in deep-inelastic Xe-Pb collisions on the energy spectrum of δ electrons ejected in the same collision. It is shown that the lifetime of the superheavy composite system causes pronounced oscillations of width ε=h/T in the electron distribution, which survive the inclusion of multistep excitations and the folding with a lifetime distribution function. This effect may serve as an atomic clock for deep-inelastic collisions.
The energy shift of K electrons in heavy atoms due to the self-energy correction has been calculated. This process is treated to all orders in Zα, where Z denotes the nuclear charge. For the superheavy system Z=170, where the K-shell binding energy reaches the pair-production threshold (E1sb∼2mc2), a shift of +11.0 keV is found. This shift is almost cancelled by the vacuum polarization, leaving a negligible effect for all quantum-electrodynamical corrections of order α but all orders of Zα.

G30 (2004) S139-S150. We review recent developments in the field of microscopic transport model calculations for ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. In particular, we focus on the strangeness production, for example, the phi-meson and its role as a messenger of the early phase of the system evolution. Moreover, we discuss the important e ects of the (soft) field properties on the multiparticle system. We outline some current problems of the models as well as possible solutions to them

Invited talk at the International Workshop XXX on Gross Properties of Nuclei and Nuclear Excitations - Ultrarelativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions, Jan. 13-19, 2002, Hirschegg, Austria. Report-no: LBNL-49674. We discuss predictions for the pion and kaon interferometry measurements in relativistic heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC energies. In particular, we confront relativistic transport model calculations that include explicitly a first-order phase transition from a thermalized quark-gluon plasma to a hadron gas with recent data from the RHIC experiments. We critically examine the "HBT-puzzle" both from the theoretical as well as from the experimental point of view. Alternative scenarios are briefly explained.
The centrality dependence of (multi-)strange hadron abundances is studied for Pb(158 AGeV)Pb reactions and compared to p(158 GeV)Pb collisions. The microscopic transport model UrQMD is used for this analysis. The predicted Lambda/pi-, Xi-/pi- and Omega-/pi- ratios are enhanced due to rescattering in central Pb-Pb collisions as compared to peripheral Pb-Pb or p-Pb collisions. A reduction of the constituent quark masses to the current quark masses m_s \sim 230 MeV, m_q \sim 10 MeV, as motivated by chiral symmetry restoration, enhances the hyperon yields to the experimentally observed high values. Similar results are obtained by an ad hoc overall increase of the color electric field strength (effective string tension of kappa=3 GeV/fm). The enhancement depends strongly on the kinematical cuts. The maximum enhancement is predicted around midrapidity. For Lambda's, strangeness suppression is predicted at projectile/target rapidity. For Omega's, the predicted enhancement can be as large as one order of magnitude. Comparisons of Pb-Pb data to proton induced asymmetric (p-A) collisions are hampered due to the predicted strong asymmetry in the various rapidity distributions of the different (strange) particle species. In p-Pb collisions, strangeness is locally (in rapidity) not conserved. The present comparison to the data of the WA97 and NA49 collaborations clearly supports the suggestion that conventional (free) hadronic scenarios are unable to describe the observed high (anti-)hyperon yields in central collisions. The doubling of the strangeness to nonstrange suppression factor, gamma_s \approx 0.65, might be interpreted as a signal of a phase of nearly massless particles.
Directed and elliptic flow
(1999)
We compare microscopic transport model calculations to recent data on the directed and elliptic flow of various hadrons in 2 - 10 A GeV Au+Au and Pb (158 A GeV) Pb collisions. For the Au+Au excitation function a transition from the squeeze-out to an in-plane enhanced emission is consistently described with mean field potentials corresponding to one incompressibility. For the Pb (158 A GeV) Pb system the elliptic flow prefers in-plane emission both for protons and pions, the directed flow of protons is opposite to that of the pions, which exhibit anti-flow. Strong directed transverse flow is present for protons and Lambdas in Au (6 A GeV) Au collisions as well. Both for the SPS and the AGS energies the agreement between data and calculations is remarkable.
We calculate the Gaussian radius parameters of the pion-emitting source in high energy heavy ion collisions, assuming a first order phase transition from a thermalized Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) to a gas of hadrons. Such a model leads to a very long-lived dissipative hadronic rescattering phase which dominates the properties of the two-pion correlation functions. The radii are found to depend only weakly on the thermalization time tau i, the critical temperature T c (and thus the latent heat), and the specific entropy of the QGP. The dissipative hadronic stage enforces large variations of the pion emission times around the mean. Therefore, the model calculations suggest a rapid increase of R out/R side as a function of K T if a thermalized QGP were formed.
We make predictions for the kaon interferometry measurements in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). A first order phase transition from a thermalized Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) to a gas of hadrons is assumed for the transport calculations. The fraction of kaons that are directly emitted from the phase boundary is considerably enhanced at large transverse momenta K T ~ 1 GeV/c. In this kinematic region, the sensitivity of the R out/R side ratio to the QGP-properties is enlarged. Here, the results of the 1-dimensional correlation analysis are presented. The extracted interferometry radii, depending on K-Theta, are not unusually large and are strongly affected by momentum resolution effects.
We present calculations of two-pion and two-kaon correlation functions in relativistic heavy ion collisions from a relativistic transport model that includes explicitly a first-order phase transition from a thermalized quark-gluon plasma to a hadron gas. We compare the obtained correlation radii with recent data from RHIC. The predicted R_side radii agree with data while the R_out and R_long radii are overestimated. We also address the impact of in-medium modifications, for example, a broadening of the rho-meson, on the correlation radii. In particular, the longitudinal correlation radius R_long is reduced, improving the comparison to data.
We calculate the kaon HBT radius parameters for high energy heavy ion collisions, assuming a first order phase transition from a thermalized Quark-Gluon-Plasma to a gas of hadrons. At high transverse momenta K_T ~ 1 GeV/c direct emission from the phase boundary becomes important, the emission duration signal, i.e., the R_out/R_side ratio, and its sensitivity to T_c (and thus to the latent heat of the phase transition) are enlarged. Moreover, the QGP+hadronic rescattering transport model calculations do not yield unusual large radii (R_i<9fm). Finite momentum resolution effects have a strong impact on the extracted HBT parameters (R_i and lambda) as well as on the ratio R_out/R_side.
The disappearance of flow
(1995)
We investigate the disappearance of collective flow in the reaction plane in heavy-ion collisions within a microscopic model (QMD). A systematic study of the impact parameter dependence is performed for the system Ca+Ca. The balance energy strongly increases with impact parameter. Momentum dependent interactions reduce the balance energies for intermediate impact parameters b ~ 4.5 fm. Dynamical negative flow is not visible in the laboratory frame but does exist in the contact frame for the heavy system Au+Au. For semi-peripheral collisions of Ca+Ca with b ~ 6.5 fm a new two-component flow is discussed. Azimuthal distributions exhibit strong collectiv flow signals, even at the balance energy.
We investigate hadron production as well as transverse hadron spectra from proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions from 2 A·GeV to 21.3 A·TeV within two independent transport approaches (HSD and UrQMD) that are based on quark, diquark, string and hadronic degrees of freedom. The comparison to experimental data on transverse mass spectra from pp, pA and C+C (or Si+Si) reactions shows the reliability of the transport models for light systems. For central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions at bombarding energies above ~5 A·GeV, furthermore, the measured K± transverse mass spectra have a larger inverse slope parameter than expected from the default calculations. We investigate various scenarios to explore their potential effects on the K± spectra. In particular the initial state Cronin effect is found to play a substantial role at top SPS and RHIC energies. However, the maximum in the K+/..+ ratio at 20 to 30 A·GeV is missed by 40% and the approximately constant slope of the K± spectra at SPS energies is not reproduced either. Our systematic analysis suggests that the additional pressure - as expected from lattice QCD calculations at finite quark chemical potential µq and temperature T- should be generated by strong interactions in the early pre-hadronic/partonic phase of central Au+Au (Pb+Pb) collisions.
We investigate the effects of strong color fields and of the associated enhanced intrinsic transverse momenta on the phi-meson production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. The observed consequences include a change of the spectral slopes, varying particle ratios, and also modified mean transverse momenta. In particular, the composition of the production processes of phi-mesons, that is, direct production vs. coalescence-like production, depends strongly on the strength of the color fields and intrinsic transverse momenta and thus represents a sensitive probe for their measurement.
We calculate the antibaryon-to-baryon ratios, anti-p/p, anti-Lambda/Lambda, anti-Xi/Xi, and anti-Omega/Omega for Au+Au collisions at RHIC (sqrt{s}_{NN}=200 GeV). The effects of strong color fields associated with an enhanced strangeness and diquark production probability and with an effective decrease of formation times are investigated. Antibaryon-to-baryon ratios increase with the color field strength. The ratios also increase with the strangeness content |S|. The netbaryon number at midrapidity considerably increases with the color field strength while the netproton number remains roughly the same. This shows that the enhanced baryon transport involves a conversion into the hyperon sector (hyperonization) which can be observed in the (Lambda - anti-Lambda)/(p - anti-p) ratio.
We calculate the antibaryon-to-baryon ratios, p̄/p,Λ̄/Λ,Ξ/Ξ, and Ω/Ω for Au+Au collisions at RHIC (sNN=200 GeV). This shows that the enhanced baryon transport involves a conversion into the hyperon sector (hyperonization) which can be observed in the (Λ−Λ̄)/(p−p̄) ratio.
The yields of strange particles are calculated with the UrQMD model for p,Pb(158 AGeV)Pb collisions and compared to experimental data. The yields are enhanced in central collisions if compared to proton induced or peripheral Pb+Pb collisions. The enhancement is due to secondary interactions. Nevertheless, only a reduction of the quark masses or equivalently an increase of the string tension provides an adequate description of the large observed enhancement factors (WA97 and NA49). Furthermore, the yields of unstable strange resonances as the Lambda star(1520) resonance or the phi meson are considerably affected by hadronic rescattering of the decay products.
This work is devoted to the description of mechanisms that might be responsible for avian magnetoreception. Two possible theoretical concepts underlying this phenomenon are formulated and their functionality is proven in realistic geomagnetic fields. It has been suggested that the "magnetic sense" in birds may be mediated by the blue light receptor protein- cryptochrome- which is known to be localized in the retinas of migratory birds. Cryptochromes are a class of photoreceptor signaling proteins that are found in a wide variety of organisms and which primarily perform regulatory functions, such as the entrainment of circadian rhythm in mammals and the inhibition of hypocotyl growth in plants. Recent experiments have shown that the activity of cryptochrome-1 in Arabidopsis thaliana is enhanced by the presence of a weak external magnetic field, confirming the ability of cryptochrome to mediate magnetic field responses. Cryptochrome's signaling is tied to the photoreduction of an internally bound chromophore, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). The spin chemistry of this photoreduction process, which involves electron transfer from a chain of three tryptophans, is modulated by the presence of a magnetic field in an effect known as the radical pair mechanism. Cryptochrome was suggested as a possible magnetoreceptor for the first time in 2000. However, no realistic calculations of the magnetic field effect in cryptochrome were performed. One of the goals of the present thesis is computationally to study the electron spin dynamics in cryptochrome and to show the feasibility of a cryptochrome-based compass in birds. In particular, the activation yield of cryptochrome was studied as a function of an external magnetic field and it was shown that the activation of the protein can be influenced by the geomagnetic field. In the work it has also been proven that cryptochrome provides an inclination compass, which is necessary for bird orientation. The evolution of spin densities as a function of time is also discussed. An alternative mechanism of avian magnetoreception discussed in the thesis is based on the interaction of two iron minerals (magnetite and maghemite) which were only recently found in subcellular compartments within the sensory dendrites of the upper beak of several bird species. The iron minerals in the beak form platelets of crystalline maghemite and assemblies of magnetite nanoparticles (magnetite clusters). The interaction between these particles can be manipulated by an external magnetic field inducing a primary receptor potential via strain-sensitive membrane channels that lead to a certain bird orientation effect. Various properties of the magnetite/maghemite magnetoreceptor system have been considered: the potential energy surface of the magnetite cluster has been calculated and analyzed as a function of the orientation of an external magnetic field; the forces acting on the magnetite cluster were calculated and analyzed; the force differences caused by the change of the direction of external magnetic field were established; the probability of opening the mechanosensitive ion channel was calculated. Finally it has been demonstrated that the iron-mineral based magnetoreceptor provides a polarity magnetic compass. Various conditions at which the magnetoreception process is violated are outlined.

We study equilibrium as well as out-of-equilibrium properties of the strongly interacting QGP medium under extreme conditions of high temperature T and high baryon densities or baryon chemical potentials μB within a kinetic approach. We present the thermodynamic and transport properties of the QGP close to equilibrium in the framework of effective models with Nf=3 active quark flavours such as the Polyakov extended Nambu-Jona Lasinio (PNJL) and dynamical quasiparticle model with the CEP (DQPM-CP). Considering the transport coefficients and the EoS of the QGP phase, we compare our results with various results from the literature. Furthermore, out-of equilibrium properties of the QGP medium and in particular, the effect of a μB- dependence of thermodynamic and transport properties of the QGP are studied within the Parton-Hadron-String-Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which covers the full evolution of the system during HICs. We find that bulk observables and flow coefficients for strange hadrons as well as for antiprotons are more sensitive to the properties of the QGP, in particular to the μB - dependence of the QGP interactions.
We study the influence of the baryon chemical potential μB on the properties of the Quark–Gluon–Plasma (QGP) in and out-of equilibrium. The description of the QGP in equilibrium is based on the effective propagators and couplings from the Dynamical QuasiParticle Model (DQPM) that is matched to reproduce the equation-of-state of the partonic system above the deconfinement temperature Tc from lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We study the transport coefficients such as the ratio of shear viscosity η and bulk viscosity ζ over entropy density s, i.e., η/s and ζ/s in the (T,μ) plane and compare to other model results available at μB=0 . The out-of equilibrium study of the QGP is performed within the Parton–Hadron–String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach extended in the partonic sector by explicitly calculating the total and differential partonic scattering cross sections based on the DQPM and the evaluated at actual temperature T and baryon chemical potential μB in each individual space-time cell where partonic scattering takes place. The traces of their μB dependences are investigated in different observables for symmetric Au + Au and asymmetric Cu + Au collisions such as rapidity and mT -distributions and directed and elliptic flow coefficients v1,v2 in the energy range 7.7 GeV ≤sNN−−−−√≤200 GeV.
We have investigated the channeling process of charged particles in a bent crystal. Invoking simple assumptions we derive a criterion, which determines whether channeling occurs or not. We obtain the same criterion using the Dirac equation. It is shown that the centrifugal force acting on the particle in the bent crystal significantly alters the effective transverse potential. The cases of axial and planar channeling are considered. The channeling probability and the dechanneling probability due to tunneling of the particle under the barrier in the effective transverse potential are estimated. These probabilities depend on the specific scaling parameter characterizing the process. Using the quasiclassical theory of synchrotron radiation we have calculated the contribution to the radiation spectrum, which arises due to the curvature of the channel. This contribution becomes significant to TeV electrons or positrons. Some practical consequences of our results are briefly discussed.
Direct nanoscopic observation of plasma waves in the channel of a graphene field-effect transistor

Plasma waves play an important role in many solid-state phenomena and devices. They also become significant in electronic device structures as the operation frequencies of these devices increase. A prominent example is field-effect transistors (FETs), that witness increased attention for application as rectifying detectors and mixers of electromagnetic waves at gigahertz and terahertz frequencies, where they exhibit very good sensitivity even high above the cut-off frequency defined by the carrier transit time. Transport theory predicts that the coupling of radiation at THz frequencies into the channel of an antenna-coupled FET leads to the development of a gated plasma wave, collectively involving the charge carriers of both the two-dimensional electron gas and the gate electrode. In this paper, we present the first direct visualization of these waves. Employing graphene FETs containing a buried gate electrode, we utilize near-field THz nanoscopy at room temperature to directly probe the envelope function of the electric field amplitude on the exposed graphene sheet and the neighboring antenna regions. Mapping of the field distribution documents that wave injection is unidirectional from the source side since the oscillating electrical potentials on the gate and drain are equalized by capacitive shunting. The plasma waves, excited at 2 THz, are overdamped, and their decay time lies in the range of 25-70 fs. Despite this short decay time, the decay length is rather long, i.e., 0.3-0.5 μm, because of the rather large propagation speed of the plasma waves, which is found to lie in the range of 3.5-7 × 106 m/s, in good agreement with theory. The propagation speed depends only weakly on the gate voltage swing and is consistent with the theoretically predicted 1/4 power law.
The equation of state (EoS) of matter at extremely high temperatures and densities is currently not fully understood, and remains a major challenge in the field of nuclear physics. Neutron stars harbor such extreme conditions and therefore serve as celestial laboratories for constraining the dense matter EoS. In this thesis, we present a novel algorithm that utilizes the idea of Bayesian analysis and the computational efficiency of neural networks to reconstruct the dense matter equation of state from mass-radius observations of neutron stars. We show that the results are compatible with those from earlier works based on conventional methods, and are in agreement with the limits on tidal deformabilities obtained from the gravitational wave event, GW170817. We also observe that the resulting squared speed of sound from the reconstructed EoS features a peak, indicating a likely convergence to the conformal limit at asymptotic densities, as expected from quantum chromodynamics. The novel algorithm can also be applied across various fields faced with computational challenges in solving inverse problems. We further examine the efficiency of deep learning methods for analyzing gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences in this thesis. In particular, we develop a deep learning classifier to segregate simulated gravitational wave data into three classes: signals from binary black hole mergers, signals from binary neutron star mergers, or white noise without any signals. A second deep learning algorithm allows for the regression of chirp mass and combined tidal deformability from simulated binary neutron star mergers. An accurate estimation of these parameters is crucial to constrain the underlying EoS. Lastly, we explore the effects of finite temperatures on the binary neutron star merger remnant from GW170817. Isentropic EoSs are used to infer the frequencies of the rigidly rotating remnant and are noted to be significantly lower compared to previous estimates from zero temperature EoSs. Overall, this thesis presents novel deep learning methods to constrain the neutron star EoS, which will prove useful in future, as more observational data is expected in the upcoming years.
We introduce a novel technique that utilizes a physics-driven deep learning method to reconstruct the dense matter equation of state from neutron star observables, particularly the masses and radii. The proposed framework involves two neural networks: one to optimize the EoS using Automatic Differentiation in the unsupervised learning scheme; and a pre-trained network to solve the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff (TOV) equations. The gradient-based optimization process incorporates a Bayesian picture into the proposed framework. The reconstructed EoS is proven to be consistent with the results from conventional methods. Furthermore, the resulting tidal deformation is in agreement with the limits obtained from the gravitational wave event, GW170817.
The production of quarkonia, the bound state of an heavy quark with its anti-particle, has for a long time been seen as a key process to understand the properties of nuclear matter in a relativistic heavy-ion collision. This thesis presents studies on the production of quarkonia in heavy-ion collisions at the new Large Hadron collider (LHC). The focus is set on the decay of J/Psi and Upsilon-states into their di-electronic decay channel, measured within the central detectors of the ALICE detector.
The discovery of the 1144-phase, e.g. CaKFe4As4, creates opportunities to build novel intermetallics with alternative stacking of two parent compounds. Here we formalize the idea by defining a class of bulk crystalline solids with A-B stacking (including 1144-phases and beyond), which is a generalization of hetero-structures from few-layer or thin-film semi-conductors to bulk intermetallics. Theoretically, four families of phosphides \textit{AB}(TM)4P4 (TM=Fe, Ru, Co, Ni) are investigated by first-principles calculations, wherein configurational, vibrational and electronic degrees of freedom are considered. It predicts a variety of stable 1144-phases (especially Ru- and Fe-phosphides). Stability rules are found and structural/electronic properties are discussed. Experimentally, we synthesize high-purity CaKRu4P4 as a proof of principle example. The synthetic method is simple and easily applied. Moreover, it alludes to a strategy to explore complex multi-component compounds, facilitated by a phase diagram coordinated by collective descriptors.

The discovery of the 1144-phase, e.g. CaKFe4As4, creates opportunities to build novel intermetallics with alternative stacking of two parent compounds. Here we formalize the idea and introduce a concept, namely hetero-crystals (HC), to describe a unique class of bulk crystalline solids with such A-B stacking (including 1144-phases and beyond). HC generalizes hetero-structures from few-layer or thin-film semi-conductors to bulk intermetallics. We illustrate the HC concept with the example of 1144-phases. The properties of open strange meson K1± in nuclear matter are estimated in the QCD sum rule approach. We obtain a relation between the in-medium mass and width of K1− (K1+) in nuclear matter, and show that the upper limit of the mass shift is as large as −249 (−35) MeV. The spectral modification of the K1 meson is possible to be probed by using kaon beams at J-PARC. Such measurement together with that of K⁎ will shed light on how chiral symmetry is partially restored in nuclear matter.
Although iron-based catalysts are regarded as a promising alternative to precious metal catalysts, their precise electronic structures during catalysis still pose challenges for computational descriptions. A particularly urgent question is the influence of the environment on the electronic structure, and how to describe this properly with computational methods. Here, we study an iron porphyrin chloride complex adsorbed on a graphene sheet using density functional theory calculations to detail how much the electronic structure is influenced by the presence of a graphene layer. Our results indicate that weak interactions due to van der Waals forces dominate between the porphyrin complex and graphene, and only a small amount of charge is transferred between the two entities. Furthermore, the interplay of the ligand field environment, strong p − d hybridization, and correlation effects within the complex are strongly involved in determining the spin state of the iron ion. By bridging molecular chemistry and solid state physics, this study provides first steps towards a joint analysis of the properties of iron-based catalysts from first principles.
Under temperature or pressure tuning, tetragonal EuPd2Si2 is known to undergo a valence transition from nearly divalent to nearly trivalent Eu accompanied by a volume reduction. Albeit intensive work, its microscopic origin is still being discussed. Here, we investigate the mechanism of the valence transition under volume compression by ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our analysis of the electronic and magnetic properties of EuPd2Si2 when approaching the valence transition shows an enhanced c-f hybridization between localized Eu 4f states and itinerant conduction states (Eu 5d, Pd 4d, and Si 3p) where an electronic charge redistribution takes place. We observe that the change in the electronic structure is intimately related to the volume reduction where Eu-Pd(Si) bond lengths shorten and, for the transition to happen, we trace the delicate balance between electronic bandwidth, crystal field splitting, Coulomb repulsion, Hund's coupling and spin-orbit coupling. In a next step we compare and benchmark our DFT results to surface-sensitive photoemission data in which the mixed-valent properties of EuPd2Si2 are reflected in a simultaneous observation of divalent and trivalent signals from the Eu 4f shell. The study serves as well to explore the limits of density functional theory and the choice of exchange correlation functionals to describe such a phenomenon as a valence transition.

Experiments for p-process nucleosynthesis with special focus on the most abundant p nucleus 92Mo
(2014)
This thesis describes experimental investigations and astrophysical network calculations relevant for the nucleosynthesis of the p nuclei. These 35 proton-rich isotopes cannot be produced by neutron-capture reactions which is the general production mechanism for elements heavier than iron in the r and s processes. Therefore, other mechanisms like photo-disintegration reactions on heavy seed nuclei (γ process) or proton-capture reactions are taken into account.
The modelling of these processes relies on a hugh amount of reactions which mostly occur for unstable isotopes. This demands, in combination with the contribution of excited states to the stellar rate, the prediction of the rates by a suited theoretical approach: the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. To improve the reliability of the predictions, systematic experimental investigations are performed within this work for the nuclear input to the calculations. The study of charged-particle optical model potentials using the activation approach for the investigation of (α,n) and (p,n) reactions is described as well as the investigation of (γ,n) reactions in a broad mass range of 140 ≤ A ≤ 210.
However, there are also key reactions which are of special interest for the nucleosynthesis of individual p nuclei. An impressive example is the puzzle about the production of the most abundant p nucleus 92Mo. Within this work, the results of an experiment using high-resolution in-beam γ-spectroscopy for the study of the 90Zr(p,γ) reaction are summarized. In addition, the efforts to investigate the 91Nb(p,γ) reaction in standard kinematics by the production of target of the unstable isotope 91Nb to be used with the high-intensity proton-beam provided by the accelerator of FRANZ, Frankfurt, are discussed.
Finally, the influence of experimental results in astrophysical network calculations is discussed using post-processing nucleosynthesis methods for the γ process in type II supernovae.
XIII Nuclei in the Cosmos, 7-11 July, 2014 Debrecen, Hungary.
As an alternative production scenario to the so-called g process, the most abundant p nucleus 92Mo may be produced by a chain of proton-capture reactions in supernovae type Ia. The reactions 90Zr(p,g) and 91Nb(p,g) are the most important reactions in this chain. We have measured the first reaction using high-resolution in-beam g-spectroscopy at HORUS, Cologne, Germany, to contribute to the existing experimental data base. So far, we only investigated the high-energy part of the Gamow window and the analysis is still in progress. We plan to study the second reaction in standard kinematics at the FRANZ facility, Frankfurt, Germany. Current developments at FRANZ will be explained in detail.
Strong correlations between baryon stopping in the projectile rapidity hemisphere and target excitation have been found in the light-ion-induced reactions at the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) (E814 group). Results in the framework of the relativistic molecular dynamics approach (RQMD) describe recent E814 data quite well. We discuss the RQMD results together with proton and pion data from the E802 group near midrapidity. They have raised the question of whether partial transparency could be seen in these experiments. The RQMD results indicate strong transverse baryon flow in central Si+Au collisions after the projectile has been stopped in the target.
In the present work, the Heidelberg electron beam ion trap (EBIT) at the Max-Planck-Institute für Kernphysik (MPIK) has been used to produce, trap highly charged argon ions and study their magnetic dipole (M1) forbidden transitions. These transitions are of relativistic origin and, hence, provide unique possibilities to perform precise studies of relativistic effects in many electron systems. In this way, the transitions energies of the 1s22s22p for the 2P3/2 - 2P1/2 transition in Ar13+ and the 1s22s2p for the 3P1 - 3P2 transition in Ar14+, for 36Ar and 40Ar isotopes were compared. The observed isotopic effect has confirmed the relativistic nuclear recoil effect corrections due to the finite nuclear mass in a recent calculation made by Tupitsyn [TSC03], in which major inconsistencies of earlier theoretical methods have been corrected for the first time. The finite mass, or recoil effect, composed of the normal mass shift (NMS), and the specific mass shift (SMS) were corrected for relativistic contributions, RNMS and RSMS. The present experimental results have shown that the recoil effects on the Breit level are indeed very important, as well as the effects of the correlated relativistic dynamics in a many electron ion.
