Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements were carried out on neutron activated 20F(T1/2=11s) nuclei in a single crystal of KZnF3. The quadrupolar splitted NMR spectrum, detected via the 20F β-radiation asymmetry, could be observed using a radio frequency modulation technique. The quadrupole coupling constant was determined to e2 q Q/h= + (12.0 ± 1.5) MHz at room temperature. The sign of e2 q Q was obtained from a simultaneous γ-ray anisotropy measurement on the succeeding 20Ne transition. Utilising a calculated field gradient of the fluorine atom, an fQ = 4.6% is determined. This value is compared with literature data of similar compounds.
In this paper equilibrium models for the calculation of the excess Gibbs free energy of binary liquid mixtures are developed, the component A of which undergoes chain-forming self-association whilst the component B acts as an 'inert' solvent. It is shown that the extension of the well-known chain-association model of Mecke and Kempter, in which the probability of chain prolongation is assumed to be independent of chain length, is unable to establish satisfactory results because it does not exhibit sufficient unsymmetry. Reduction of the probability of chain growth with in-creasing chain length leads to an improved model with the geometric series replaced by the exponential series. This model, in which only two parameters are used, i. e. the equilibrium constants K for mutual solvation of A and B, and ρ for self-association of A, allows fitting of isothermal experimental GE /R T literature data on cycloalkanol-cycloalkane, alkanol-alkane, and NMF -CCl4 systems within the limits of experimental error. Compared with the two-parameter Wilson equation which gives equally small standard deviations, our equilibrium model has the advantage of allowing passage from GE to HE data and of being applicable to liquid-liquid equilibria.
Levels of the purine nucleoside triphosphates are de creasing towards the end of log phase growth of Streptomyces hydrogenans. Induction of 20β-hydroxysteroid dehy-drogenase by addition of 11β,21-dihydroxy-4,17 (20) -pregna-dien-3-one to the growth medium leads to a pronounced drop in purine nucleoside triphosphate levels with is irreversible in contrast to the initial loss and later accumulation of RNA.
A screening procedure is presented which allows the isolation of yeast mutants (typ tlr) with highly efficient utilization of exogenous deoxythymidine-5′-monophosphate (5′-dTMP) (>50% ). Data are given concerning the phenomenon of 5′-dTMP utilization in general: (i) The ability of S. cerevisiae to incorporate exogenous 5′-dTMP was found to already be a wild type feature of this yeast, i. e. apparently not to be due to any mutation such as typ , tup, tmp per or tum. Consequently these mutations are interpreted as amplifiers of a pre-given wild type potency. So far eight stages of 5′-dTMP utilization were detected as classified by the optimal 5′-dTMP requirement, with 5′-dTMP biosynthesis blocked, of the corresponding mutant strains isolated. All of them fit well into a mathematical series of the type “2n × 1.5” (n = 0, 1, 2, … , 11), where the product term for n = 11 represents the 5′-dTMP requirement (μg/ml) of the best 5′-dTMP utilizing wild type strain found, (ii) Amplification of the 5′-dTMP utilizing potency obviously is due to any genetically determined alteration of the yeast 5′-dTMP uptaking principle itself or of physiological processes accompanying the monophosphate’s uptake, (iii) The functioning of 5′-dTMP uptake requires acidic (≦ pH 6) conditions in the yeast cell’s outer environment, (iv) Some yeast typ and typ tlr mutants were found to exhibit a more or less pronounced sensitivity towards exogenously offered 5′dTM P. The response of a sensitive strain towards inhibitory concentrations of the nucleotide apparently is co-conditioned by the presence or absence of thymidylate biosynthesis. With 5′-dTMP biosynthesis blocked the 5′-dTMP mediated inhibition is a permanent one and finally leads to the death of a cell. With a functioning thymidylate biosynthesis, in contrast, the inhibition is only temporary, (v) Yeast typ or typ tlr strains were observed to dephosphorylate exogenous 5′-dTMP to thymidine due to a phosphatase activity which cannot be eliminated at pH 7 + 70 mм inorganic phosphate conditions in the growth medium. This 5′-dTMP cleavage obviously occurs outside the cell and does not seem to be correlated both to the monophosphate’s uptake and to the phenomenon of 5′-dTMP sensitivity. The destruction of 5′-dTMP does not disturb (5′-dTMP) DNA-specific labelling.
Introductory chapters on the geography, vegetation and history of botanical ex loration are followed by a catalogue of 331 species of wild vascular plants, 90% of which represent first records for the island. Synonymy, references, localities and ecological data are given for each species in a condensed form. The taxonomy, nomenclature and distribution of some taxa are discussed; in one case (Silene cythnia) a drawing and a distribution map are supplied. Nomenclatural novelties are validated in the genera Centaurea, Matricana, Melica (by W. Hempel) and Trifolium. A phytogeographical and ecological analysis of the flora demonstrates its striking banality and the unexpectedly high proportion of anthropophytes. No pliytogeographical link with tlie other E. Aegean Isiands and Anatolia exists, but there are some affinities with the Cyclades. The observations are consistent with the hypotliesis of a long insular isolation leading to a strong depletion or even destruction of the original flora, which has been replaced by long-distance dispersed and anthropophytic elements.
Double-differential cross sections have been measured for high-energy p, d, t, 3He, and 4He particles emitted from uranium targets irradiated with 20Ne ions at energies of 250, 400, and 2100 MeV/nucleon and 4He ions at 400 MeV/nucleon. By using the shape and yield of the proton energy spectra, the shape and yield of the d, t, 3He, and 4He energy spectra can be deduced at all measured angles for all incident projectile energies by assuming that they are formed by a coalescence of cascade nucleons, using a model analogous to that of Butler and Pearson, and Schwarzschild and Zupancic-caron.
The Mbuti people, "the pygmies of the Ituri Forest", have long been considered the nucleus of pygmy groups in Equatorial Africa, and have been studied by Sche besta, Gusinde, Putnam, and Turnbull. to name a few. Most of these studies were mainly somatometrical or concerned with the society, culture and religion, for the most part overlooking the ecological aspect. Until this time, few studies made by researchers directly involved in observing and participating in the hunting-gathering style of life have gone into an in-depth, ecology-focused approach to that life. C. M. Turnbull, in his book, "The Mbuti Pygmies: An Ethnographic Survey" (1965a), divides the Mbuti people into net hunters and archers. and summarizes ethnographic data gathered by Schebesta and Putnam, which he then uses to compare the two groups. He makes the point that the hunting-gathering economy exerts a great influence upon Mbuti society and ideology, tending to regulate their way of life. However. his data and analysis of actual hunting activities do not seem sufficient enough to prove this point. The same is the case with previous research of band societies around the world: It has often been stated that a hunting-gathering economy brings forth nomadism, division of labor according to sex, co-operation of labor, egalitarianism, distribution of food among the group, etc. Subsequently, studies have been undertaken to discover how these factors work to regulate the social life, social structure and ideology of a given hunting-gathering group. However, each time substantial investigation of the various hunting and food gathering activities themselves. which support the hunting-gathering economy, seems to have been left out. Cultural anthropologists who take the standpoint of cultural ecology discuss the relationships between the culture of a given group and its natural environment, but they make only a general description of both the natural environment involved, and of the actual association of the culture to that environment. This paper. as the first report on the ecological-anthropological studies of the Mbuti people. deals mainly with hunting, one of their subsistence activities. illustrating its various features and attempting to discuss the data I have obtained. Since the focus of this paper is on hunting activities, I will not cover the general life of the Mbuti people; the more general economic activities, social life, ideology, and so on. I will deal with these problems in another report. Here, I want to make it the ultimate object to gain clearer comprehension of Mbuti life, society, and mentality by concentrating on Mbuti hunting, which is closely connected with nature. This account obtained by first-hand observation of hunting activities, will illustrate the general hunting methods of the Mbuti people, and discuss the mode of existence of the Mbuti band. T. Tanno is to make a more detailed analysis of net hunting.
The gas phase ion chemistry of the simplest known phosphorus ylide, trimethylmethylenephosphorane, has been studied in the mass range m/e=2 - 186 and the pressure range 10-7-10-4 Torr. The most abundant product ion, m/e = 104, (CH3)2C2H5PCH2'+ is formed by a methylene group transfer reaction of the molecular ion. Almost all of the other product ions formed from the molecular ion can be subsumed under the general formula (CH3)3PCHPRn+ (R = H, CH3; n=1,2,3). The reactions indicate that the molecular ion has lost its ylide character almost completely. The protonated molecule is formed almost exclusively by a reaction of the fragment ion m/e = 75. This reaction and the CH3PH group transfer reaction indicate a cyclic structure (CH3) HP(CH2)2+ for this ion. A cyclic structure is also assumed for the ion m/e = 73, PC3H6+, which undergoes P and PH transfer reactions. The reactions of the ion m/e = 47 are consistent with the structure CH3PH+. The ICR and mass spectra are given, some metastable decompositions are discussed.
