In his widely acclaimed book “Das Kalte Herz” (The Cold Heart), economic historian Werner Plumpe tells the story of the history of capitalism, which in his view represents a sober form of economics which has proved itself superior and higher performing than other systems. To this day, the long tradition of capitalism criticism has not understood that in capitalism, great wealth is utilized to produce goods that are usually affordable for people with small incomes.
Mutations in blood stem cells do not necessarily have to result in leukaemia. It was only recently discovered that clones of mutated blood cells can be identified in many healthy people in old age. Nonetheless, clonal haematopoiesis, as scientists baptised this finding, is far from innocent. It is a formidable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases – on par with smoking, excess weight or high blood pressure. Why this is, is still a riddle to be solved.

Professor Wild, one of your main areas of activity is the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Since 2010/2011, they have accounted for approximately half of all deaths worldwide.
Cardiovascular diseases are in fact frequently multi-causal. In addition to risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and nicotine abuse, genetic predispositions, family and social influences and environmental factors also play a role – as do mental illnesses and personality. A single factor normally only has a very small influence, but several ones can lead to illness through accumulation.
Since the risk factors are known, targeted prevention is possible. Unfortunately, health insurance companies often do not offer comprehensive prevention as part of standard service...
