This case study evaluated the response of objective and subjective markers of overreaching to a highly demanding conditioning training mesocycle in elite tennis players to determine 1) whether players would become functionally or non-functionally overreached, and 2) to explore how coherently overreaching markers would respond. Performance, laboratory and cardiac autonomous activity markers were evaluated in three experienced male tennis professionals competing at top 30, top 100 and top 1000 level before and after their strength and conditioning training was increased by 120, 160 and 180%, respectively, for 30 days. Every week, subjective ratings of stress and recovery were evaluated by means of a questionnaire. After 74, 76 and 55 h of training, increases in V̇O2max (+8, +5 and +18%) and speed strength indices (+9, +23 and +5%) were observed in all players. Changes of maximal heart rate (-5, -6, +4 beats per minute), laboratory markers (e.g. insulin-like growth factor -26, -17, -9%; free testosterone to cortisol ratio -63, +2, -12%) and cardiac autonomous activity markers (heart rate variability -49, -64, -13%) were variable among the players. Improved performance provides evidence that overreaching was functional in all players. However, several overreaching markers were altered and these alterations were more pronounced in the two top 100 players. The response of overreaching indicators was not coherent.
Background: The positive association between parental socio-economic position (PSEP) and health among adolescents may be partly explained by physical activity behaviour. We investigated the associations between physical activity, aerobic fitness and PSEP in a population based sample of German adolescents.
Methods: 5,251 participants, aged 11-17 years, in the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents 2003-2006 (KiGGS) underwent a sub-maximal cycle ergometer test and completed a questionnaire obtaining information on physical activity and media use. The associations between physical activity, media use, aerobic fitness and PSEP were analysed with multivariate logistic regression models for boys and girls separately. Odds ratios (ORs) of PSEP (education, occupation and income) on the outcomes were calculated adjusted for age, region, and other influencing factors.
Results: Parental education was more strongly associated with the outcome variables than parental occupation and income. After adjusting for age and region, a higher parental education level was associated with better aerobic fitness - with an OR of 1.5 (95% CI 1.2-1.9) for girls whose parents had secondary education and 1.9 (1.4-2.5) for girls whose parents had tertiary education compared to girls whose parents had primary education. The corresponding ORs for boys were 1.3 (1.0-1.6) and 1.6 (1.2-2.1), respectively. Higher parental education level was associated with lower media use: an OR of 2.1 (1.5-3.0) for girls whose parents had secondary education and 2.7 (1.8-4.1) for girls whose parents had primary education compared to girls whose parents had tertiary education. The corresponding ORs for boys were 1.5 (1.2-1.9) and 1.9 (1.5-2.5), respectively. Higher parental education level was associated with a higher physical activity level only among girls: an OR of 1.3 (1.0-1.6) for girls whose parents had secondary education and 1.2 (0.9-1.5) for girls whose parents had tertiary education compared to girls whose parents had primary education. The corresponding ORs for boys were 0.9 (0.8-1.2) and 0.8 (0.6-1.0), respectively.
Conclusions: Adolescents of parents with low SEP showed a lower level of aerobic fitness and higher levels of media use than adolescents of parents with higher SEP. Health-promotion interventions need to reach adolescents of parents with low PSEP and stimulate physical activity.
Es wird allgemein vermutet, dass Klassenfahrten bei den Schülern nachhaltige Veränderungen bewirken können und nur wenige empirische Befunde belegen die Wirksamkeit von Klassenfahrten. Diese defizitäre Forschungslage aufgreifend, beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Arbeit mit der sozial-integrativen Wirkung einer sportbezogenen Klassenfahrt (Skifahrt) auf empirischer Grundlage.
Mit Hilfe der Desintegrationstheorie von Anhut & Heitmeyer (2000) lässt sich das Konstrukt „Integration“ in allgemeinerer Form über das antinomische Begriffspaar „Anerkennung vs. Ablehnung“ operationalisieren, wobei zwischen positionaler, moralischer und emotionaler Anerkennung bzw. Ablehnung unterschieden werden kann. Neben individuellen Merkmalen erfolgt die Vergabe und Verweigerung von Anerkennung über kollektive Merkmale, die auf Zugehörigkeit zu einer Gruppe beruht. Im pädagogischen Kontext der Schulklasse ist daher von besonderem Interesse, wie sich die Anerkennungsverhältnisse zwischen Gruppen verändern, denen besondere Potenziale für heterogenitätsbedingte Ablehnung zugeschrieben wird (vgl. Gerecke, 2010). Hypothetisch sind dies Mädchen „vs.“ Jungen, Jugendliche mit „vs.“ Jugendliche ohne Migrationshintergrund und bezüglich Klassenfahrten die Gruppe der Schüler, die nicht teilnehmen konnten „vs.“ der Gruppe derer, die teilgenommen haben. Auf dieser Grundlage beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Arbeit mit den Effekten sportbezogenen Klassenfahrten auf die soziale Integration operationalisiert in Anerkennungsverhältnissen.
Mittels eines soziometrischen Wahlverfahrens wurden die Anerkennungs- und Ablehnungsverhältnisse von vier Schulklassen (N=95) zu drei Messzeitpunkten (Eingangs-, Ausgangs- und Behaltenstest nach sechs Wochen) computergestützt erhoben.
Die Betrachtung der Gesamtgruppe zeigt eine Steigerung der positiven Wahlen (eta²=0,210) bei einer gleichzeitigen Reduktion der negativen Wahlen (eta²=0,167). Diese Entwicklung ist über Post-hoc-Einzelvergleiche auf eine signifikante Veränderung innerhalb des Treatmentzeitraumes (ET AT) zurückzuführen. Das Intervall AT-BT nach Abschluss der Klassenfahrt ist nicht signifikant, so dass auf eine zeitliche Stabilität der Ergebnisse geschlossen werden kann. Allerdings sind große Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Klassen festzustellen, die nicht teilweise nicht mit dem Gesamtergebnis übereinstimmen. In der differenzierten Betrachtung der heterogenitätsbedingten Unterschiede ist in erster Linie ein Geschlechtereffekt zu erkennen. Insbesondere die positiven und negativen Wahlen zwischen Schülern verschiedenen Geschlechts verändern sich signifikant. Aber auch hier zeigen sie die bereits dargestellten klassenspezifischen Differenzen.
Während der Teilnahmestatus keinen Einfluss auf die Vergabe von negativen und positiven Wahlen besitzt, beeinflusst der Migrationsstatus hingegen die positiven Wahlen signifikant.
Mit Blick auf die theoretischen Grundlagen dieser Arbeit kann der Anstieg der positiven Wahlen als Zuwachs von Anerkennung und der Rückgang negativer Wahlen als eine Reduktion von Ablehnung interpretiert werden, wobei sich kein einheitliches Bild auf Klassenebene ergibt.

Mobilität wird heutzutage in der Regel mit Technik und Verkehr in Verbindung gebracht. Mobilsein erscheint so als ein ausgesprochen unkörperliches und entleiblichtes Phänomen. Besonders deutlich wird das an der Mobilität in der Großstadt. Autos, Busse, U- und S-Bahn einerseits, Mobilitätskarten und -zentren oder Mobility-Tickets andererseits sorgen hier für einen möglichst schnellen und effizienten Ortswechsel von A nach B. Die Trendsportart Le Parkour setzt dazu einen Kontrapunkt. Mobilität realisiert sich hier als explizit leiblich-körperliche Beweglichkeit und darüber hinaus als Bedingung der Möglichkeit kreativer Selbstfindung.
Introduction: Postural control is a prerequisite to many everyday and sporting activities which requires the interaction of multiple sensorimotor processes. As long as we have no balance disorders, the maintenance of an erect standing position is taken for granted with automatic running control processes. It is well known that with increasing age or disease balance problems occur which often cause fall-related injuries. To assess balance performance, posturography is widely applied in which body sway is traditionally viewed as a manifestation of random fluctuations. Thus, the amount of sway is solely used as an index of postural stability, that is, less sway is an indication of better control. But, traditional measures of variability fail to account for the temporal organisation of postural sway. The concept of nonlinear dynamics suggests that variability in the motor output is not random but structured. It provides the stimulus to reveal the functionality of postural sway. This thesis evaluates nonlinear analysis tools in addition to classic linear methods in terms of age-related modifications of postural control and under different standing conditions in order to broaden the existing knowledge of postural control processes.
Methods: Static posturographic analyses were conducted which included the recording of centre of pressure (COP) time series by means of a force plate. Linear and nonlinear methods were used to quantify postural sway variability in order to evaluate both the amount and structure of sway. Classic time and frequency domain COP parameters were computed. In addition, wavelet transform (WT), multiscale entropy, detrended fluctuation analysis, and scaled windowed variance method were applied to COP signals in order to derive structural COP parameters. Two experiments were performed. 1) 16 young (26.1 ± 6.7 years), healthy subjects were asked to adopt a bipedal stance under single- and dual-task conditions. Three trials were conduced each with a different sampling duration: 30, 60, and 300 seconds [s]. 2) 26 young (28.15 ± 5.86 years) and 13 elderly (72 ± 7 years) subjects stood quietly for 60 s on five different surfaces which imposed different biomechanical constraints: level ground (LG), one foot on a step (ST), uphill (UH), downhill (DH), and slope (SL). Additional to COP recordings, limb load symmetry was assessed via foot pressure insoles.
Results: We found a higher sensitivity of structural COP parameters to modulations of postural control and partly an improved evaluation of sway dynamics in longer COP recordings. WT revealed a reweighing of frequency bands in response to altered standing conditions. Scaling exponents and entropy values of COP signals were task-dependent. Higher entropy values were found under the dual-task and condition ST. The time scales affected under the altered standing positions differed between groups and sway directions. Mainly larger posturograms were found in the elderly. Age effects were especially revealed in position ST and concerning medial-lateral COP signals. Load asymmetry was stronger in elderly subjects for LG, UH, and DH positions.
Discussion: Modifications of multiple time scales corresponds to an interplay of control subsystems to cope with the altered task demands. The affected time scales are age-dependent suggesting a change of control processes. Higher irregularity under the dual-task indicates a more complex motor output which is interpreted as less attentional investment into postural control. Larger complexity is evident for ST in contrast to LG position. ST obviously challenges lateral sway which is counteracted differently between groups. Load asymmetry suggests that especially elderly subjects adopt a step-initiation strategy.
Conclusion: A continued application of nonlinear methods is necessary to broaden the understanding of postural control mechanisms and to identify classifiers for balance dysfunctions. Structural COP parameters provide a more comprehensive indication of postural control system properties between groups and task demands. COP recordings of at least 60 s are recommended to adequately quantify COP signal structure. The analysis of postural strategies in everyday activities increases the ecological validity of postural control studies and can provide valuable information regarding the development of effective rehabilitation programs.
