In our present-day landscape in Central Europe major parts of the xylobiontic especially of the saproxylic beetle fauna belong to the group of endangered species assemblages (Speight 1989, Geiser 1994). Oaks, in Central Europe mainly Quercus robur and Q. petraea, are well known for their large number of associated insect species and harbour the highest beetle diversity, especially for dead wood inhabiting species, of all broadleaved tree species in this region (e.g. Palm 1959). A characteristic species associated with oaks in its life-cycle is the endangered Great Capricorn Cerambyx cerdo. C. cerdo is one of the protected species explicitly named in the Habitats Directive of the European Union with the goal of maintaining existing populations and establishing long-term survival (Council of the European Communities 1992). The last remaining colonised areas of this longhorn beetle in Central Europe are well known for the enormous number of very rare xylobiontic beetle species. Thus, we are interested in the following research questions: 1) Are there typical species associated with C. cerdo? 2) If so, what kind of relationship do these associated species have to C. cerdo from a nature conservation point of view?
The Diamantina Plateau is located in the central region of the Espinhaço Range, in the State of Minas Gerais, which is dominated by campo rupestre formations. We describe a new species of Lippia L., endemic to the Diamantina Plateau, and provide an annotated checklist and identification key for the 17 species of the genus occurring in the area. Lippia raoniana P.H.Cardoso & Salimena sp. nov. is mainly distinguished by its ovate leaves with adaxial and abaxial surfaces densely covered by sessile glandular trichomes, and drupaceous fruits with two pyrenes. It is known only from two populations, and thus can be provisionally considered as Critically Endangered. Details on the species’ ecology, as well as a comparison with morphologically similar species, a distribution map, and field photographs, are provided. In this work, we also present pictures of the 17 species in their habitats, and we hope that these illustrations will help in the identification and conservation of these taxa.
Orange lily Lilium bulbiferum subsp. bulbiferum occurs in the mountains of Western and Central Europe. Within almost the entire area of distribution, it is considered to be rare and endangered. The main purpose of the present study is to analyse the variability of environmental conditions of sites of the orange lily that are considered natural on its north-eastern border of occurrence. Using vegetation databases from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia and our material collected during field work in the Western Carpathians and the Sudetes, we analysed the variability of species composition within communities with the occurrence of L. bulbiferum subsp. bulbiferum. The classification was performed using a modified TWINSPAN algorithm in the JUICE software. Ecological analysis was performed on the basis of Ellenberg indicator values with a Zelený-Schaffers modified permutation test. In general, the findings indicate that in the study area there are at least seven plant communities, within three separate classes, with the occurrence of the orange lily. All vegetation units distinguished here are semi-natural communities, which are maintained through extensive and traditional agricultural practices. Microclimatic conditions, which indicate a narrow ecological tolerance of the species to light availability and temperature, may have a crucial effect on the distribution of L. bulbiferum subsp. bulbiferum on the north-eastern border of its range in Europe. These factors significantly reduce the possibility of penetration of the species into forest or scrub communities. On the other hand, owing to far wider ranges of tolerance to moisture conditions and soil reaction than previously considered typical of the species, the orange lily can occur in different light-demanding communities, from acidic pastures up to calcareous thermophilous grasslands. An almost exclusive presence of L. bulbiferum subsp. bulbiferum in semi-natural habitats suggests that active management and protection are crucial to protect its full genetic variation on the European continent.
The Hawaiian Islands have arisen in isolation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean due to volcanism unleashed by interaction of mantle-deep thermal plumes with the overlying Pacific Plate (MONTELLI et al. 2004, ABOUCHAMI et al. 2005). This volcano “factory” has produced a consistently present string of islands increasing in age from the current Big Island of Hawaii (500,000 years old) northwestwardly to the island of Kure, estimated to be 28-30 million years old (CARSON & CLAGUE 1995). Successively colonizing and proliferating on these islands since Miocene time (LIEBHERR 2005), are beetles classified in the carabid beetle genus Blackburnia SHARP, 1878 (LIEBHERR & ZIMMERMAN 2000). The 132 known Blackburnia species are arrayed in four successive adelphotaxa. The monotypic subgenus Protocaccus LIEBHERR & ZIMMERMAN, 2000, adelphotaxon to the rest of the radiation, is represented by B. mandibularis LIEBHERR, 2000 of Kauai. The next-diverging clade is classified as subgenus Colpocaccus SHARP, 1903, and is composed of four flightcapable species. The last two adelphotaxa are the nominate subgenus Blackburnia and subgenus Metromenus SHARP, 1884. The former includes 52 species, and is based on a ground-plan ancestor that was capable of dispersal by winged flight. This clade exhibits the greatest anagenetic diversification of all four clades, with various subgroups exhibiting extensive modifications of the external cuticle, including thickened, ridged, and variously shaped pronota and elytra, as well as elongate legs, and extensive specializations of the male and female genitalia (LIEBHERR & ZIMMERMAN 1998, 2000). Taxa exhibiting cuticular modifications are all brachypterous, suggesting that loss of metathoracic wings was a requisite precursor to modification of body armature. All 75 species of subgenus Metromenus are characterized by brachyptery. These also exhibit various body forms however the member taxa are never characterized by the thickened cuticle and associated modifications seen among taxa of sg. Blackburnia. Monophyly of the latter three subgenera was corroborated using molecular sequence data (CRYAN et al. 2001), though basal relationships of the three clades were resolved so that Colpocaccus and Metromenus were construed as adelphotaxa. In this study, morphological characters, and ecological and genetic characteristics of the various clades compared. These comparisons illustrate the coordinated diversification of ecological and genetic traits, and how these are associated with different levels of speciation. These traits are then put in the context of species endangerment, assessed using biotic survey data started in the 19th Century, and continuing during present-day efforts to completely describe and characterize the Blackburnia fauna.
The Cerrado domain is the most diverse savannah biome in the world and a biodiversity hotspot for conservation. Only a few areas of the domain remain well preserved, among them the Jalapão region in Tocantins State, currently is considered the best preserved area of the Brazilian Cerrado. Listed in a recent Angiosperm checklist for the region, there were two species of Polygala series Trichospermae, which were recognized as new by the first author. Polygala bringelii sp. nov., endemic to the Jalapão region, is diagnosed by its obclavate seeds without a ring of trichomes at their base, keel with the crest shorter than the cuculus, and the internal sepals (wings) longer than the capsule. Polygala tocantinensis sp. nov., endemic to Tocantins state, is distinguished by its internal sepals (wings) with two glands near to the rounded apex, and a ring of convergent trichomes at the base of the seeds. The two species are morphologically closest with Polygala trichosperma of sect. Timutua, series Trichospermae, but differs in its corolla and seeds shape and pubescence. An identification key, photographic plates, photos of floral parts under magnification, preliminary conservation assessments, and ecological comments of both species are also provided.
Hornschuchia (Annonaceae), an endemic and threatened genus from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

The South American Atlantic Forest is a biodiversity hotspot, and a relevant area for conservation due to its high level of endemism and great loss of habitat. One of its endemic taxa is the genus Hornschuchia (Annonaceae), including 12 species that occur from the State of Rio de Janeiro to Pernambuco in Brazil. The last taxonomic treatment of Hornschuchia was carried out 27 years ago. Since that time, two new species have been described and new specimens of known species have been collected, expanding our knowledge about the morphology and distribution of the genus. Hornschuchia, as an endemic genus in a threatened environment, deserves special attention. For this reason, we updated the taxonomic treatment of Hornschuchia, including the recently described species in the key, preparing illustrations, updating the descriptions of the species, clarifying and correcting information regarding the historical and type collections, providing preliminary conservation statuses, and analyzing patterns of endemism and richness for the genus. One species is preliminarily assessed as Critically Endangered, nine are Endangered, one is Vulnerable and one is of Least Concern. The coast of Bahia is a priority place for conservation for Hornschuchia as its center of species diversity.
