Interactional niche in the development of geometrical and spatial thinking in the familial context

In the analysis of mathematics education in early childhood it is necessary to consider the familial context, which has a significant influence on development in early childhood. Many reputable international research studies emphasize that the more children experience mathematical situations in their families, the more different emerging forms of participation occur for the children that enable them to learn mathematics in the early years. In this sense mathematical activities in the familial context are cornerstones of children’s mathematical development, which is also affected by the ethnic, cultural, educational and linguistic features of their families. Germany has a population of approximately 82 million, about 7.2 million of whom are immigrants (Statisches Bundesamt 2009, pp.28-32). Children in immigrant families grow up with multiculturalism and multilingualism, therefore these children are categorized as a risk group in Germany. “Early Steps in Mathematics Learning – Family Study” (erStMaL-FaSt) is the one of the first familial studies in Germany to deal with the impact of familial socialization on mathematics learning. The study enables us to observe children from different ethnic groups with their family members in different mathematical play situations. The family study (erStMaL-FaSt) is empirically performed within the framework of the erStMaL (Early Steps in Mathematics Learning) project, which relates to the investigation of longitudinal mathematical cognitive development in preschool and early primary-school ages from a socio-constructivist perspective. This study uses two selected mathematical domains, Geometry and Measurement, and four play situations within these two mathematical domains.
My PhD study is situated in erStMaL-FaSt. Therefore, in the beginning of this first chapter, I briefly touch upon IDeA Centre and the erStMaL project and then elaborate on erStMaL-FaSt. As parts of my research concepts, I specify two themes of erStMaL-FaSt: family and play. Thereafter I elaborate upon my research interest. The aim of my study is the research and development of theoretical insights in the functioning of familial interactions for the formation of geometrical (spatial) thinking and learning of children of Turkish ethnic background. Therefore, still in Chapter 1, I present some background on the Turkish people who live in Germany and the spatial development of the children.
This study is designed as a longitudinal study and constructed from interactionist and socio-constructivist perspectives. From a socio-constructivist perspective the cognitive development of an individual is constitutively bound to the participation of this individual in a variety of social interactions. In this regard the presence of each family member provides the child with some “learning opportunities” that are embedded in the interactive process of negotiation of meaning about mathematical play. During the interaction of such various mathematical learning situations, there occur different emerging forms of participation and support. For the purpose of analysing the spatial development of a child in interaction processes in play situations with family members, various statuses of participation are constructed and theoretically described in terms of the concept of the “interactional niche in the development of mathematical thinking in the familial context” (NMT-Family) (Acar & Krummheuer, 2011), which is adapted to the special needs of familial interaction processes. The concept of the “interactional niche in the development of mathematical thinking” (NMT) consists of the “learning offerings” provided by a group or society, which are specific to their culture and are categorized as aspects of “allocation”, and of the situationally emerging performance occurring in the process of meaning negotiation, both of which are subsumed under the aspect of the “situation”, and of the individual contribution of the particular child, which constitutes the aspect of “child’s contribution” (Krummheuer 2011a, 2011b, 2012, 2014; Krummheuer & Schütte 2014). Thereby NMT-Family is constructed as a subconcept of NMT, which offers the advantage of closer analyses and comparisons between familial mathematical learning occasions in early childhood and primary school ages.
Within the scope of NMT-Family, a “mathematics learning support system” (MLSS) is an interactional system which may emerge between the child and the family members in the course of the interaction process of concrete situations in play (Krummheuer & Acar Bayraktar, 2011). All these topics are addressed in Chapter 2 as theoretical approaches and in Chapter 3 as the research method of this study. The present study is about note taking techniques in consecutive translation and their application. In the beginning we analyzed in the relevant literature, consecutive interpretation among translation techniques, note taking, and the function and features of note taking in consecutive translation. Afterwards, we presented the problems that an interpreter might face in consecutive interpretation with concrete examples and provided possible methods and techniques to overcome these. Hereby, we emphasized that note taking techniques are an important feature to remember while translating and its function as a memory supporting tool. In the last section we discussed the roles of a consecutive interpreter and emphasized within this context the usage of the earlier mentioned note taking techniques (use of acronyms, signs, and symbols). Moreover we highlighted that each interpreter has to have his/her own techniques and improve these continuously.
Die Übersetzung, insbesondere die literarische, ist vor allem eine Art Kulturübertragung. Neben der Beherrschung der Sprachen setzt sie die Kenntnis des Allgemeinen und Besonderen des Landes wie Kultur, Tradition, Glauben, geschichtliche und gesellschaftliche Begebenheiten und auch soziale Strukturen voraus. Wenn die Sprachen und Kulturen tiefgreifend wahrgenommen werden, können die übersetzten Texte die Adressaten erreichen, d.h., dass die Ausgangssprache und -kultur für die Zielrezipienten verständlich sein können. So wird der Übersetzer als Kulturträger angenommen. Cornelius Bischoff ist beispielsweise ein wohlbekannter Name für den deutschen und türkischen Literaturkreis. Er ist vor allem bekannt als "der deutscheste Türke und der türkischste Deutsche" sowie als eine Brücke zwischen Deutschland und der Türkei. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, Cornelius Bischoff, einen Kulturträger zwischen der deutschen und türkischen Übersetzung, zu behandeln. Als ein "Haymatloser" fand er in der Türkei die Möglichkeit, die türkische Sprache und Kultur wesentlich kennenzulernen und viele türkische Werke ins Deutsche zu übersetzen. Als ein Übersetzer trug er zuallererst dazu bei, die türkische Literatur, die bedeutenden türkischen Schriftsteller, die türkische Kultur und Tradition sowie den türkischen Sprachgebrauch in Deutschland bekannt zu machen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Besonderheit Bischoffs in der Übersetzungswelt im Hinblick auf drei Aspekte diskutiert: zuerst im Hinblick auf den Zusammenhang seiner Wurzeln in der Türkei und im Türkischen - schon in seinen Wurzeln, besonders mütterlicherseits, wurde das Türkische verinnerlicht -, dann auf die in der Türkei verbrachten Jahre - die Jahre, in denen er "haymatlos" genannt wurde - und zuletzt auf die Wahrnehmung und Aneignung der türkischen Sprache, Kultur und Gesellschaft - was auf ihn lebenslang einwirkte. In diesem Kontext wird versucht, sein Leben, seine Werke und seine Wirkung im Rahmen der übersetzerischen Tätigkeit zu analysieren.
Walthers Gedicht "Ir sult sprechen willekommen" und Karacaoğlans Gedicht "Ich zog hinunter, sah mir Frankistan an" werden in diesem Diskussionsbeitrag zum Vergleich herangezogen. Beide Dichter treten nach einer langen Reise vor die Gesellschaft auf und teilen ihre Erfahrungen anhand von Vergleich zwischen Vaterländischem und Ausländischem mit.
Bu çalışmada, Türkçedeki emir kipinin bir alt ulamı olan ve Almancada Jussiv terimiyle karşılanan 3. kişilere yönelik emir-istek1 biçimleri ve bunların Almancaya nasıl aktarılabileceği konulaştırılmaktadır. Bu amaçla Yaşar Kemal’in Kuşlar da Gittiromanındaki söz konusu emir-istek biçimleri aynı kitabın Almanca çevirisi Auch die Vögel sind fort’taki çevirileriyle karşılaştırılmaktadır. Karşılaştırmanın amacı çeviri eleştirisi değildir; yalnızca durum saptaması yapılmaktadır. Saptanan çeviri olanaklarının Alman dili eğitimi öğrencilerinde nasıl yansıma bulacağını görebilmek için bir de dar kapsamlı bir çeviri anketi uygulanmıştır. Türk dilinin bu dolaylı emir-istek için somut dilbilgisel bir ulam (Ali gelsin!) geliştirmişken, Almancada bire bir karşılaştırılabilir dilbilgisel bir eşdeğerlilik saptanmamıştır. Bu ulamın işlevi Almancada özellikle 3. kişi dolaylı anlatımla (Jeder kehre vor seiner eigenen Haustür!) ve yardımcı eylemlerle (Das Feuer soll von hier mitgenommen werden) karşılanmaktadır. Anlamsal bir ulam olan kipselliğin Türkçe ifadesindeki birçok örtüşmezlik, bu konunun Almanca öğretiminde daha çok dikkate alınması gerektiğini göstermiştir. Öğrencilerle yaptığımız çeviri uygulamasındaki diğer saptamamız, çevirilerdeki yetersizliğin sözlük kullanımındaki yetersizliğe dayandığıdır.
Die Sprache ist ein hervorragendes Werk, das durch Interaktion entsteht und mit dem wir eine Wirklichkeit erzeugen, die eine sowohl konstruierende als auch destruierende Rolle spielen kann. Manche Linguisten vergleichen den Sprachgebrauch mit dem Sprachspiel. Mit seiner Hervorhebung der Sprachverwendung und seinem einprägsamen und geschliffenen Ausspruch 'Die Bedeutung eines Wortes ist sein Gebrauch in der Sprache' gilt Wittgenstein als Vorgänger der linguistischen Pragmatik. Seine Äußerungen inspirierten die Theoretiker der Sprechakttheorie. Nach Austin verläuft der Sprachgebrauch in Sprechakten, wobei jeder Akt aus den Teilakten Lokution, Illokution und Perlokution entsteht und auch defizitäre Sprechakte möglich sind. Aus der Tatsache, dass der Anzahl der Kontexte keine Grenzlinie zu ziehen ist, dass es also unendlich viele Kontexte und dementsprechend so viele Funktionen gibt, können wir ebenfalls auf eine unendliche Zahl von expliziten oder impliziten Sprechakten schließen. Die Sprechakte haben einen modalen Charakter, der a) vom Blickpunkt des Sprechers und des Hörers, b) vom Kontext, in dem sich die Sprechakte abspielen, c) von der Gesellschaft als der Trägerin einer Kultur und d) von den Naturumständen, unter denen die Interaktanten leben, abhängt. Die Sprechakte gelingen nur dann, wenn die Interaktanten kooperationsbereit sind. Das allein genügt aber nicht; auch das Höflichkeitsprinzip ist sehr konstitutiv. In dieser Arbeit werden besondere türkische Sprechakte analysiert, die zeigen, dass die Äußerungstypen nicht immer mit den Illokutionen übereinstimmen. Das kann vom Kontext und auch von suprasegmentalen Merkmalen des jeweiligen Sprechaktes abhängen.
Causative, which is analyzed in the context of voice, differs widely in Turkish and German languages. A causative can be obtained nearly from each verb in Turkish language while this category is not productive in German Language. Like prefixes, which are of great importance in German language, the causative has the same significance in Turkish language. Causatives can be divided into three: a) lexical causative, causative existing in words' own meaning; for instance, there exists such a relationship between the words "slide" and "fall"; b) morphological causative consists of morphemes (öl-dür-t-mek); c) whereas, the context is important for the operant causative. When we say “It smells gas in here’ it may have been intended to open a window and we can make it done. There is a direct connection between the causative and causality. Because, in causative instead of doing something directly, it may be caused to be done or occurred. The notion of causative in German has been reviewed in the semantic context at a low degree. This is because of the fact that, morphological causative verbs are fewer and new causative voices can't be formed. However, this issue has been handled in a very detailed manner especially at morphological level in Turkish language. There is even fine detail under the title causative itself. The most important characteristic of causative is to change the combination value of the verbs. However, the relation between causative and passive is just the opposite of this and asymmetric. Structures having semantic similarities with causatives and named as Funktionsverbgefüge (put into practice = apply) in German exist. Reciprocal voices and reflexive voices, the most important voices of Turkish language, generally allow the formation of causative verb.
Bu çalışmanın amacı Almanya'da yaşayan Türk çocuklarının Türkçe yazma becerilerini incelemek ve yaptıkları yazım hatalarını belirlemektir. Çalışmada nitel yöntem tercih edilmiştir. Çalışmada yer alan veriler durum çalışması ile elde edilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde ise betimsel içerik analizi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini Almanya’da yaşayan Türk çocukları, örneklemini ise Almanya'nın Hessen Eyaletinde Türkçe dersi alan 11-15 yaş arası rastgele seçilen 20 Türk öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin yazılı anlatım beceri düzeylerini belirlemek için uzman görüşleri de alındıktan sonra iki ayrı konudan tercih ettikleri biri hakkında kompozisyon metinleri yazdırılmıştır. Sonuç olarak Almanya'da yaşayan Türk çocuklarının yazdıkları metinlerde ağırlıklı olarak alfabe farklılığından kaynaklanan yanlışlar, büyük-küçük yazımından kaynaklanan yanlışlar, bitişik-ayrı yazımından kaynaklanan yanlışlar ile konuşulan dilin yazı diline aktarımından kaynaklanan yanlışlar belirlenmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda elde edilen bulgulara yönelik öneriler sunulmuştur.
The aim of this study is to trace back the translator of "Reinhold Lubenau Seyahatnamesi [Osmanlı Ülkesinde, 1587-1589]" and focus on her translation approach through paratexts. The traveller portrays the Muslim 'other' whom he met in the Ottoman Empire where he spent his time between the years 1587-1589, when the Ottoman Empire had the power and Islam was being perceived as a threat to them versus his own culture which he belonged to as a Prussian Protestant. The translation of this itinerary is available to Turkish readers after approximately 400 years in 2012. What makes this translation interesting is the translation of a source text, in which the target culture was being portrayed from the perspective of the 'other', into a target language. How was this 'foreign' perspective constructed by the traveler translated and reflected in the paratext? What was the approach of the translator against the challenges he encountered during the translation process? Answers to these questions among many others were being searched through an examination of paratexts. In addition, it was also discussed whether the author moved to the reader or the reader moved to the author. Paratexts encourage reading and direct the reception (Genette 2016). In this study, book covers, names, titles, genre, graphics illustration and footnotes were examined. Translator footnotes, which were provided by the translator in order to make the text clear, were classified in order to underline the functions of these footnotes. Translator footnotes are the tools, which make translators visible and help them to raise their voices in the texts. In peritexts, translator can provide extra information to the readers, explain and justify his/her translation decisions.
Bu makalenin amacı, Osmanlı Devleti'ne gerçekleştirilen gezilere ilişkin seyahatnamelerin Almancadan Türkçeye yapılmış olan çevirilerini Genette (2016)'in yanmetin kavramı bağlamında irdelemektir. Bu seyahatname çevirileri 1960–2017 yılları arasında yayınlanmıştır. Temel alınan bütünce 16 farklı seyahatnameye ait 34 çeviri sürümü içermektedir. Seyahatname, yanmetin ve çeviri ilişkisine değinildikten sonra sözü edilen seyahatname sürümlerinin yıllara göre dağılımı gösterilmiştir. Seyahatname çevirileri erek kültür dizgesinin bir parçası olduğundan, bu çeviri kitaplardaki iç metinler, erek okurların çeviri metni nasıl okumaları gerektiği ve kendilerini nelerin beklediği konusunda aracılık etmektedir. Böylelikle bu iç metinler, okurların olası ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak üzere ve erek kültürün koşullarına göre üretilmektedir. Örneklerle bu iç metinler aracılığıyla erek okurla nasıl bağ kurulduğu gösterilmiştir. Bu çalışmada ayrıca, belli başlı iç metin türlerinin niceliksel ve niteliksel incelemesiyle çeviri olgusu, çevirinin amacı, çevirmenin görünürlüğü/görünmezliği, yayınevlerinin çeviri politikası, çeviriyi etkileyen etmenler vb. konularda bilgiler sunmak amaçlanmıştır. Toplanan veriler, iç metinlerin bir yandan erek okurların olası ihtiyaçlarına göre şekillenebildiğini gösterirken diğer yandan erek kültür dizgesinin bazı ideolojik dinamiklerine hizmet edebildiğine işaret etmektedir.
