This article discusses one of many possible strategies that translators use in rendering an idiom from a L1 to a L2, i.e. the verbatim or the literal translation. The points of view according to this strategy differ very much among the researchers: some treat them as semantic false friends. Based on the replies to a questionnaire that was handed out to 10 Romanian native speakers, one could state that the context in which the literal translation of a source-idiom is situated plays an important role for the understanding of the text. Beyond that, the translation of an idiom cannot be judged only by virtue of the denotative meaning – the pragmatic function of the translation as a whole is just as important. The questionnaire was compiled of literal translations of Swedish idioms into Romanian (from different translations of different novels). The article further discusses some of the text examples from this questionnaire and describes some of the phenomena related to idioms which hinder the so-called idiom-understanding and which probably led to misinterpretation and a failed literal translation.
Investigations of current and historical human rights discourses gain new perspectives when viewed as a problem of translation: by examining non-European transformations/displacements/revisions of the universal principles of the UN Declaration (1948), critical implementations of these principles in local practices and – almost more importantly – re-translations of these local transformations into new declarations of human rights principles. The article discusses the complex conditions under which the universal claim of a western human rights discourse could be challenged by considering translational activities which attempt to identify new, but common reference points for a transcultural human rights discourse.
The aim of this article is to systematize selected existing definitions of texts and, from the perspective of research into text comprehension, to compare and contextualize the most frequent concepts applied in the field. These concepts are used in the description of the basic phases and aspects of the text comprehension process; they may be divided into three groups depending on whether they denote the comprehension process itself, the results of this process, or the properties of text. This division should not be viewed as an immutable set of concepts, but rather as a starting point for research into issues of text comprehension and comprehensibility.

Mitte der Woche haben sich die beiden CDU-Bundestagsabgeordneten Krings und Heveling in einer offiziellen Fraktions-Pressemitteilung mit den SOPA-Plänen solidarisiert. Das hat innerhalb der Internet-freundlichen CDU-/CSU-Abgeordneten wie Dorothee Bär, Peter Tauber, Thomas Jarzombek, Peter Altmaier und Michael Kretschmer zu Kritik geführt, die diese über Twitter und Zitate kommunzierten. ...
