In two separate occurrences, graduates of the Oregon Forest Pest Detector program discovered the exotic Agrilus cyanescens (Ratzeburg) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in Portland, Oregon, damaging a backyard shrub, Lonicera involucrata (Rich.) Banks ex Spreng. (Caprifoliaceae). Although first detected in the USA 99 years ago, the known occurrence nearest to Oregon is in Utah.
A new species, Chrysobothris cerceripraeda Westcott and Thomas (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is described from prey specimens found in nests of the ground-nesting wasp, Cerceris fumipennis Say (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae), near Jacksonville, Florida, USA. A listing for all species of Buprestidae taken as prey of the wasp in that state is provided, four of which, including the species described herein, are new. Notes are also given for
four new state records for Buprestidae.
Acmaeodera tiquilia Westcott and Barr, new species, from Big Bend National Park, Texas is described, figured, and discussed in considerable detail, particularly in relation to the similar and partially sympatric A. recticollis Fall. A neotype is designated for A. quatuordecimspilota Obenberger and that species is synonymized with A. ornata (Fabricius). Additionally, A. gibbula gila Knull is synonymized with A. gibbula LeConte; A. nautica Van Dyke is synonymized with A. simulata Van Dyke.
Treatment is provided for 224 species and subspecies in the genera Acherusia, Acmaeodera, Actenodes, Agaeocera, Agrilus, Anthaxia, Brachys, Buprestis, Chalcangium, Chrysobothris, Colobogaster, Cyphothorax, Dicerca, Dismorpha, Euchroma, Hiperantha, Hylaeogena, Leiopleura, Lius, Mixochlorus, Omochyseus, Pachyschelus, Polycesta, Psiloptera, Spectralia, Taphrocerus, Tetragonoschema, Thrincopyge, Trypantius and Tyndaris. Of these, 44 are recorded for the first time from Mexico and 175 represent new state records. Adult host and/or habitat information is provided, usually from the label data, for 93 of the taxa. Larval host records are indicated for Chrysobothris analis LeConte, C. capitata Gory and Laporte, C. multistigmosa (Mannerheim) and C. sallei Waterhouse. Acmaeodera sinaloensis Duges has been discovered to breed in bamboo. A major taxonomic character of C. multistigmosa is discussed.
Distributional, biological and taxonomic data are provided for 64 species of Buprestidae belonging to the genera Acmaeodera, Acmaeoderoides, Actenodes, Agaeocera, Agrilus, Buprestis, Chrysophana, Descarpentriesina, Dicerca, Hippomelas, Melanophila, Pachyschelus, Polycesta, Ptosima, Spectralia, Taphrocerus, Trachykele and Tyndaris. Forty-six of these species are recorded for the first time from a state or province, and new larval host records are provided for 15 others. Taphrocerus sulcifrons Fisher is recorded from the U.S. for the first time. Evidence is given to eliminate the recorded occurrence of Agrilus arbuti Fisher in British Columbia and Ptosima walshii LeConte in California.
