If a species is not listed in Kis (1985) for a specific country, nor present in the literature cited below for a special genus or species, I have given that species an indication: new for a country (*). When for a species or group of taxa no special literature is cited, the identification can usually (also) be made with Magill (1981). If a remark is given on the distribution in (C.) Africa, also material seen from institutes and private herbaria was considered.
Barbula propingua C. Muell. is Tortula antarctica (Hampe) Wils. in Hook. f.; Barbula vesiculosa C. Muell. is Tortula papillosa Wils.; Tortula chlorotricha Broth. & Geheeb is Barbula crinita K. F. Schultz; Barbula chrysopus C. Muell. is Didymodon torquatus (Tayl.) Catcheside. Furthermore, comments are given on several nomina nuda.
Chionoloma bombayense (Müll. Hal.) P. Sollm. [syn. Pseudosymblepharis bombayensis (Müll. Hal.) P. Sollm.] and Syntrichia serrata (Dixon) R.H. Zander are reported new for Australia. Barbula hampeana Paris is identical with Barbula hornschuchiana Schultz. Pottia tasmanica Broth. and Pottia brevicaulis (Taylor) Müll. Hal. are considered new synonyms of Microbryum starkeanum (Hedw.) R.H. Zander. Comments on a nomen nudum, Tortula brachytheca Burchard, are given.
Studies on some Asian species of the genus Leptodontium (Müll. Hal.) Hampe (Musci, Pottiaceae)
(2002)
Leptodontium taiwanense Nog. is synonymous with Leptodontium aggregatum (Müll. Hal.) Kindb.; Leptodontium scaberrimum Broth. is synonymous with Leptodontium viticulosoides (P. Beauv.) Wijk & Margad. Bryoerythrophyllum yichunense C.H. Gao is the same as Leptodontium flexifolium (With.) Hampe in Lindb. A note on Leptodontium handelii Thér. is given. This taxon is identical with Leptodontium flexifolium (With.) Hampe.
Eighteen taxa are proposed as new synonyms in this study. Barbula calycina Schwägr. and Tortula ruraliformis (Besch.) Ingham are reported new for China. The types of Barbula pugionata Müll. Hal. and Streblotrichum gracillimum Herzog could not be located; comments on these two taxa are given. Barbula pugionata is considered as a questionable synonym of Syntrichia gemmascens (P.C. Chen) R.H. Zander. Streblotrichum gracillimum is Bellibarbula recurva (Griff.) R.H. Zander. Fruiting specimens of Didymodon giganteus (Funck) Jur., Didymodon leskeoides K. Saito and Didymodon subandreaeoides (Kindb.) R.H. Zander are reported from the Himalayas. Didymodon subandreaeoides and Bryoerythrophyllum rubrum (Geh.) P.C. Chen are reported new for Mongolia. Didymodon hastatus (Mitt.) R.H. Zander replaces Didymodon maschalogena (Renauld & Cardot) Broth. Barbula subcontorta Broth. is here viewed as Didymodon tectorum (Müll. Hal.) K. Saito: the latter is a distinct species.
Barbula geminata C. Muell. is Barbula crinita K.F. Schultz; Barbula austroruralis C. Muell. is Tortula antarctica (Hampe) Wils. in Hook. f.; Hymenostomum olivaceum C. Muell. ex Geheeb is Weissia controversa Hedw.; Hymenostomum sullivanii C. Muell. ex Geheeb is Weissia patula (Knight) A.J. Fife. Furthermore, comments are given on several nomina nuda.
Barbula consanguinea (Thw. & Mitt.) Jaeg. sensu Eddy is considered as a pan-tropical species. This taxon is reported new for several central African countries, the Arabian peninsula, and Middle America. This variable species is shortly discussed and compared with (most) related taxa. Hymenostylium crispulum Broth. & Par. and Barbula obscura Sull. (= Barbula wrightii Sauerb.) are considered as synonyms of Barbula consanguinea.
