Self Study is a genre-bending work of autophilosophy. It opens a rare, rear window into the schizoid position of self-sufficient withdrawal and impassive indifference. This inability to be enriched by outer experiences feeds the relentless suspicion that hell is other people. Laying bare his life and work, Kishik engages with psychoanalysis, philosophy, and cultural inquiry to trace loneliness across the history of thought, leading to today's shut-in society and the autonomous subject of liberal capitalism.
Feminist, queer, and trans studies are all influenced significantly by anti-identitarian thought. Yet, contemporary gender and sexual identities only seem to be proliferating: nonbinary, graysexual, demigender, and more. This chapter focuses on a series of reference guides that schematize this recent expansion. Often miming reductive reference forms (the dictionary, the A-Z list), these texts and the questions they raise help to rethink the place of 'identity' across gender and sexuality studies.
This article applies imagology to "migration literature" - a genre that is described as a "peripheral phenomenon" in the 2007 handbook "Imagology", but that requires more thorough attention due to the increasing number of significant writings by immigrant authors. Focusing on works by Rafik Schami, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Amara Lakhous, Igiaba Scego, Hatice Akyün, Yoko Tawada, and Emine Sevgi Özdamar, and considering theoretical observations by Edward Said, Salman Rushdie, and Homi Bhabha, this article analyses how most texts prefer arguments and metaphors of everyday life to the traditional images and stereotypes of nationalistic discourse. It concludes by distinguishing two perspectives central to most of them: that of an "in-between" and/or a "Third Space."
Background: In the revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), "Identity" is an essential diagnostic criterion for personality disorders (self-related personality functioning) in the alternative approach to the diagnosis of personality disorders in Section III of DSM-5. Integrating a broad range of established identity concepts, AIDA (Assessment of Identity Development in Adolescence) is a new questionnaire to assess pathology-related identity development in healthy and disturbed adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. Aim of the present study is to investigate differences in identity development between adolescents with different psychiatric diagnoses.
Methods: Participants were 86 adolescent psychiatric in- and outpatients aged 12 to 18 years. The test set includes the questionnaire AIDA and two semi-structured psychiatric interviews (SCID-II, K-DIPS). The patients were assigned to three diagnostic groups (personality disorders, internalizing disorders, externalizing disorders). Differences were analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance MANOVA.
Results: In line with our hypotheses, patients with personality disorders showed the highest scores in all AIDA scales with T>70. Patients with externalizing disorders showed scores in an average range compared to population norms, while patients with internalizing disorders lay in between with scores around T=60. The AIDA total score was highly significant between the groups with a remarkable effect size of f= 0.44.
Conclusion: Impairment of identity development differs between adolescent patients with different forms of mental disorders. The AIDA questionnaire is able to discriminate between these groups. This may help to improve assessment and treatment of adolescents with severe psychiatric problems.
This study addresses the situation of the Sorbs, an indigenous minority living in Lusatia, Germany. Under the overarching rubric of ethnic and nationalist projects, women are usually symbolized as the guardians of culture and language. Women’s experiences as subjects in everyday life and in multi-facetted social practices therefore become veiled. The main concern in this book is to discuss how the women who identify themselves as/with Sorbs studied here construct their identities in the modern world, how they approach a sense of self and how they position themselves in their everyday lives, what kind of processes they undergo in their identity construction, and which factors are implicated in the formation of these identities. Investigating the Sorbian minority as the research subject and focusing on the female gender primarily involves intersections of ethnicity and gender, which are the points of departure for this study. As the research progresses, women’s gradual active construction of gender and ethnicity while living their everyday lives reveals a construction of multifarious and complex identifications across differences of gender, ethnicity, culture, religion and class. The results of research create Sorbian culture anew, craft Sorbian identity afresh and render the notion of Sorbian women in new terms. New meanings encased in these conceptions actually contain an active and transformative impetus. This thrust forces these ideas to undergo a process of redefinition. It is the life experiences people have in everyday practices that impel us to envisage identity construction as a dynamic, never-ending and open-ended articulation of one’s positionings.
(2010)
The concern of this thesis is a discussion of the way German-Jewish identity manifests itself in two literary texts before and after 1933. Using the examples of Sammy Gronemann’s novel Tohuwabohu and Martin Beradt’s Die Straße der kleinen Ewigkeit, it offers a textual analysis of two works which share close connections in terms of subject matter, style, and their respective authors’ background, but are historically divided by the fundamental experience of the rise of National Socialism in Germany.
I argue that space is a crucial factor through which identity is constituted in each text, both of which use and partially subvert the romanticized image of the Eastern European shtetl brought to Germany by authors such as Arnold Zweig in the aftermath of World War I. Space in this context always has a twofold quality to it. It functions as a space of identity, but also as a space of identification through which a group of people label others as either belonging or not belonging to a specific space. Furthermore, both texts reject monolithic definitions of Jewish identity, emphasizing instead the diversity of Jewish life in Europe before the Rise of National Socialism.
