Die zunehmende Nutzung von Online-Kommunikationskanälen vereinfacht nicht nur den alltäglichen, zwischenmenschlichen Austausch, sondern eröffnet auch der erziehungswissenschaftlichen Forschung neue Möglichkeiten. Gleichzeitig stehen Chancen wie der Reichweitenerhöhung von Forschungsaktivitäten auch Herausforderungen bspw. im Bereich der Validität gegenüber. Vor diesem Hintergrund geht der Beitrag der Frage nach, ob sich diese Nachteile durch die methodologisch fundierte Kombination von Offline- und Online-Umgebungen kompensieren lassen. Anhand eines Forschungsszenarios werden drei verschiedene Designs konzipiert, die auf genau diese Herausforderung eingehen. Dazu wird eine Mixed Methods Perspektive eingenommen, um verschiedene Möglichkeiten aufzuzeigen, die einzelne Schwächen der Methoden adäquat ausgleichen oder sogar Synergieeffekte erzielen.
All linguistics should be media linguistics, but it is not. This thesis is presented by using linguistic landscapes as an example. LL research does not belong to the traditional core of either mainstream linguistics or media linguistics. This is why not everything within power has been done yet to make full use of their thematic, conceptual and methodological possibilities. Visible signs in public space, however, are an everyday phenomenon. You have to pull out all the stops to research them extensively. The distinction between linguistics and media linguistics turns out to be counterproductive. But this does not only apply to the case of linguistic landscapes. It also stands for any comprehensive investigation of language and language use. (Exceptions may be very narrow questions for specific purposes.) The above thoughts are supported by a database of the project „Metropolenzeichen“ with more than 25.000 systematically collected, geocoded and tagged photographs.
Das Thema der Nutzung von Musik und Liedern im Fremdsprachenunterricht ist immer sowohl in unterrichtspraktischen als auch in theoretisch-konzeptionellen Diskussionen präsent. Im Unterricht erfüllen Musik und Songs unterschiedliche Funktionen (siehe etwa die psychohygienische, emotionale, sozialpsychologische Funktion), sind an der Förderung des unbewussten Lernens sowie (sprachlich) kognitiver Prozesse beteiligt, unterstützen das inter- bzw. (trans-)kulturelle Lernen, dienen als Auslöser fremdsprachlicher Kommunikationsprozesse etc. Praxiserfahrungen berichten über die herausragende Rolle von Songs beim Erwerb des Sprachmaterials (siehe insbesondere die Entwicklung des auditorisch-sensorischen Gedächtnisses). Allgemein bekannt sind die Vorteile des Liedhörens und Singens im mnemotischen Bereich, nicht zuletzt erweist sich ihr affektives sowie didaktisches Potenzial. In der Forschung vermehren sich seit den 1990er-Jahren Veröffentlichungen unterschiedlicher Qualität und Glaubwürdigkeit, die über vielfältige Wirkungen des Musikhörens, Musikspielens sowie des Gesangs auf Intelligenzleistungen, auf Gedächtnis, auf Emotionen sowie auf menschliche Gesundheit berichten. Uns als Theoretiker und Praktiker im Fach DaF interessiert in erster Linie der mögliche Beitrag unterschiedlicher Formen von Musikbeschäftigung zum(Fremdsprachen-)Lernen. Die bisherigen Resultate zeigen sich als nicht befriedigend: Trotz zahlreicher Publikationen und vielversprechender Schlussfolgerungen gibt es nur selten relevante theoretisch und empirisch untermauerte Studien über die gegenseitige Beeinflussung musikalischer und sprachlicher Fähigkeiten. Die Hauptursachen dieses Zustands sind in zahlreichen Querverbindungen zwischen den verschiedensten Aspekten der Musik sowie der menschlichen Kognition zu suchen, die so kompliziert und subtil erscheinen, dass es beinahe unmöglich ist, alle auftretenden Variablen kritisch zu prüfen und zu interpretieren.
The late physicist Carl Sagan, whom I quote in the first part of my title, skillfully phrased the common sense view on evidence in the mature sciences. In linguistics, however, evidence has become a controversial issue, especially so when it comes to the investigation of less well studied languages. In this paper, I argue that Sagan's principle should be applied to linguistics. The growing accessibility of a wide array of experimental techniques and computational tools to analyze such data makes it feasible to back up extraordinary claims with evidence from a variety of sources. At the same time, it is in many cases possible to agree on what constitutes an ordinary claim and focus the extra effort on extraordinary claims. For non-controversial claims no more than the minimum effort to establish the claim and properly document the evidence is necessary.
This paper presents epistemological and methodological problems found in work on the subgrouping of Sino-Tibetan languages and the reconstruction of features of the languages. A key problem is the lack of an accepted standard for judging this work, one that can stand up to statistical evaluation. An alternative methodology that involves using fixed sets of features to give us the statistical probability of common origin is suggested.
The nineteenth century in Britain saw tumultuous changes that reshaped the fabric of society and altered the course of modernization. It also saw the rise of the novel to the height of its cultural power as the most important literary form of the period. This paper reports on a long-term experiment in tracing such macroscopic changes in the novel during this crucial period. Specifically, we present findings on two interrelated transformations in novelistic language that reveal a systemic concretization in language and fundamental change in the social spaces of the novel. We show how these shifts have consequences for setting, characterization, and narration as well as implications for the responsiveness of the novel to the dramatic changes in British society.
This paper has a second strand as well. This project was simultaneously an experiment in developing quantitative and computational methods for tracing changes in literary language. We wanted to see how far quantifiable features such as word usage could be pushed toward the investigation of literary history. Could we leverage quantitative methods in ways that respect the nuance and complexity we value in the humanities? To this end, we present a second set of results, the techniques and methodological lessons gained in the course of designing and running this project.
Innovation oder Wiederkehr? : Das Methodenspektrum im Kurzzeitgedächtnis der Literaturwissenschaft

In recent years, a pronounced methodological self-reflexiveness has been established as a standard in studying language and literature. Methodological pluralism and a specific methodological adaptation to the objects of study are a characteristic feature of present-day literary and cultural studies. In keeping with this tendency, introductory textbooks on literary studies often provide an overview of the broad discussion and spectrum of methods and their seemingly boundless possible applications and the options for combining them. But this is not the first time that the boundaries of our discipline have undergone dissolution. Beginning with early examples of accounts of methodological variety and methodological reflection (Oscar Benda, Harry Maync, Emil Ermatinger, Julius Petersen), the present article discusses the ways in which an awareness of a surprisingly long tradition of discussions concerning methodological competence affects the present self-conception and identity of philology.
Is there something like a 'scientific' approach to the reading or interpretation of literary texts as is suggested by the German term 'Literaturwissenschaft'? This essay argues that genuinely scientific criteria such as the intersubjective verifiability of a given reading do not apply to the reading of literary texts. The reason is that such texts enable a quasi infinite range of different readings the preconceptions of which are contingent upon the individual readers, their previous experiences, literary as well as non-literary, and their expectations. — What, then, are the tasks of a scholarly reading of literary texts? Firstly, the theoretical reflection upon the status of such texts in comparison to pragmatic texts; secondly, the attempt at reconstructing their historical context (in terms of discursive history), and thirdly, a reading with regard to present-day problems. The 'quality' of a scholarly reading of a literary text would thus be dependent not on its 'objectivity', but rather on its capacity to produce resonances amongst other present-day readers, scholarly and non-scholarly.
U ovome se radu razmatra odabir naziva diskursnih oznaka za određene jezične elemente i ukazuje na moguće zakonitosti njihova nastanka. Raščlanjuju se pojedine karakteristike, formalne i funkcionalne prirode, koje se najčešće povezuju s diskursnim oznakama. Pri određivanju jezičnih elemenata u funkciji diskursnih oznaka opredjeljuje se, prije svega, za funkcionalni kriterij, dok su formalne karakteristike tek pokazatelji njihove pripadnosti zajedničkoj kategoriji.
