The dynamics of the torsion field is analyzed in the framework of the Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of Gravity (CCGG), a De Donder–Weyl Hamiltonian formulation of gauge gravity. The action is quadratic in both, the torsion and the Riemann–Cartan tensor. Since the latter adds the derivative of torsion to the equations of motion, torsion is no longer identical to spin density, as in the Einstein–Cartan theory, but an additional propagating degree of freedom. As torsion turns out to be totally anti-symmetric, it can be parametrised via a single axial vector. It is shown in this paper that, in the weak torsion limit, the axial vector obeys a wave equation with an effective mass term which is partially dependent on the scalar curvature. The source of torsion is thereby given by the fermion axial current which is the net fermionic spin density of the system. Possible measurable effects and approaches to experimental analysis are addressed. For example, neutron star mergers could act as a dipoles or quadrupoles for torsional radiation, and an analysis of radiation of pulsars could lead to a detection of torsion wave background radiation.
Using a data sample of 4.481×108 𝜓(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of the four-lepton-decays 𝐽/𝜓→𝑒+𝑒−𝑒+𝑒− and 𝐽/𝜓→𝑒+𝑒−𝜇+𝜇− utilizing the process 𝜓(3686)→𝜋+𝜋−𝐽/𝜓. The branching fractions are determined to be [5.48±0.31(stat)±0.45(syst)]×10−5 and [3.53±0.22(stat)±0.13(syst)]×10−5, respectively. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions. No significant signal is observed for 𝐽/𝜓→𝜇+𝜇−𝜇+𝜇−, and an upper limit on the branching fraction is set at 1.6×10−6 at the 90% confidence level. A 𝐶𝑃 asymmetry observable is constructed for the first two channels, which is measured to be (−0.012±0.054±0.010) and (0.062±0.059±0.006), respectively. No evidence for 𝐶𝑃 violation is observed in this process.
Abstract
The co-occurrence of insulin resistance (IR)-related metabolic conditions with neuropsychiatric disorders is a complex public health challenge. Evidence of the genetic links between these phenotypes is emerging, but little is currently known about the genomic regions and biological functions that are involved. To address this, we performed Local Analysis of [co]Variant Association (LAVA) using large-scale (N=9,725-933,970) genome-wide association studies (GWASs) results for three IR-related conditions (type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and metabolic syndrome) and nine neuropsychiatric disorders. Subsequently, positional and expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL)-based gene mapping and downstream functional genomic analyses were performed on the significant loci. Patterns of negative and positive local genetic correlations (|rg|=0.21-1, pFDR<0.05) were identified at 109 unique genomic regions across all phenotype pairs. Local correlations emerged even in the absence of global genetic correlations between IR-related conditions and Alzheimer’s disease, bipolar disorder, and Tourette’s syndrome. Genes mapped to the correlated regions showed enrichment in biological pathways integral to immune-inflammatory function, vesicle trafficking, insulin signalling, oxygen transport, and lipid metabolism. Colocalisation analyses further prioritised 10 genetically correlated regions for likely harbouring shared causal variants, displaying high deleterious or regulatory potential. These variants were found within or in close proximity to genes, such as SLC39A8 and HLA-DRB1, that can be targeted by supplements and already known drugs, including omega-3/6 fatty acids, immunomodulatory, antihypertensive, and cholesterol-lowering drugs. Overall, our findings underscore the complex genetic landscape of IR-neuropsychiatric multimorbidity, advocating for an integrated disease model and offering novel insights for research and treatment strategies in this domain.
Highlights
Local genetic correlations found even in the absence of global correlations.
Both positive and negative local correlations found for IR-neuropsychiatric pairs.
Enrichment for immune, and insulin signalling pathways, among others.
Pinpointed shared likely causal variants within 10 genomic regions.
Identified therapeutic targets, e.g., SLC39A8 and HLA-DRB1, for drug repurposing.
With the STAR experiment at RHIC, we characterize √sNN = 200 GeV p+Au collisions by event activity (EA) measured within the pseudorapidity range η∈[−5,−3.4] in the Au-going direction and report correlations between this EA and hard- and soft-scale particle production at mid-rapidity (η∈[−1,1]). At the soft scale, charged particle production in low-EA p+Au collisions is comparable to that in \pp collisions and increases monotonically with increasing EA. At the hard scale, we report measurements of high transverse momentum (pT) jets in events of different EAs. In contrast to the soft particle production, high-pT particle production and EA are found to be inversely related. To investigate whether this is a signal of jet quenching in high-EA events, we also report ratios of pT imbalance and azimuthal separation of dijets in high- and low-EA events. Within our measurement precision, no significant differences are observed, disfavoring the presence of jet quenching in the highest 30% EA p+Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV.
In a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), the fundamental building blocks of matter, quarks and gluons, are under extreme conditions of temperature and density. A QGP could exist in the early stages of the Universe, and in various objects and events in the cosmos. The thermodynamic and hydrodynamic properties of the QGP are described by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and can be studied in heavy-ion collisions. Despite being a key thermodynamic parameter, the QGP temperature is still poorly known. Thermal lepton pairs (e+e− and μ+μ−) are ideal penetrating probes of the true temperature of the emitting source, since their invariant-mass spectra suffer neither from strong final-state interactions nor from blue-shift effects due to rapid expansion. Here we measure the QGP temperature using thermal e+e− production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The average temperature from the low-mass region (in-medium ρ0 vector-meson dominant) is (1.99±0.24)×1012 K, consistent with the chemical freeze-out temperature from statistical models and the phase transition temperature from LQCD. The average temperature from the intermediate mass region (above the ρ0 mass, QGP dominant) is significantly higher at (3.40±0.55)×1012 K. This work provides essential experimental thermodynamic measurements to map out the QCD phase diagram and understand the properties of matter under extreme conditions.
The processes hc→γP(P=η′, η, π0) are studied with a sample of (27.12±0.14)×108 ψ(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The decay hc→γη is observed for the first time with the significance of 9.0σ, and the branching fraction is determined to be (3.77±0.55±0.13±0.26)×10−4, while B(hc→γη′) is measured to be (1.40±0.11±0.04±0.10)×10−3, where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic, and the third from the branching fraction of ψ(3686)→π0hc. The combination of these results allows for a precise determination of Rhc=B(hc→γη)B(hc→γη′), which is calculated to be (27.0±4.4±1.0)%. The results are valuable for gaining a deeper understanding of η−η′ mixing, and its manifestation within quantum chromodynamics. No significant signal is found for the decay hc→γπ0, and an upper limit is placed on its branching fraction of B(hc→γπ0)<5.0×10−5, at the 90% confidence level.
Based on 368.5 pb−1 of 𝑒+𝑒− collision data collected at center-of-mass energies 4.914 and 4.946 GeV by the BESIII detector, the 𝑒+𝑒−→𝜙𝜒𝑐1(3872) process is searched for the first time. No significant signal is observed and the upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the product of the Born cross section 𝜎(𝑒+𝑒−→𝜙𝜒𝑐1(3872)) and the branching fraction ℬ[𝜒𝑐1(3872)→𝜋+𝜋−𝐽/𝜓] at 4.914 and 4.946 GeV are set to be 0.85 and 0.96 pb, respectively. These measurements provide useful information for the production of the 𝜒𝑐1(3872) at 𝑒+𝑒− colliders and deepen our understanding about the nature of this particle.

Purpose: The IC-8® Apthera™ (AcuFocus Inc.™, Irvine, California, USA) is the first small aperture intraocular lens (IOL) to receive FDA approval for presbyopia correction in the summer of 2022. It is a single-piece hydrophobic acrylic monofocal lens, which is placed in the capsular bag. In its center it carries a black circular mask (FilterRing™) with a diameter of 3.23 mm consisting of polyvinylidene fluoride and carbon black nanoparticles. In the center of this mask sits a 1.36 mm wide aperture. Thanks to this pinhole effect the IC-8® serves as an extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOL and can be used in presbyopia correction.
This report describes the case of a patient with an IC-8® implant who underwent Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification (PCO). The post laser checkup showed a dark central optical change within the IOL and the patient described optical phenomena as well as blurred central vision, which is why he received IOL exchange. The explanted IC-8® was sent to the Intermountain Ocular Research Center at the University of Utah for further analysis.
Observations: A 56-year-old male underwent cataract surgery with implantation of a non-diffractive EDOF-IOL on the right and the IC-8® small aperture IOL on the left eye. On the left eye, the patient had received penetrating keratoplasty seven years prior to the cataract operation due to posttraumatic corneal scarring. The early checkups after cataract surgery showed a corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) in the left eye of +0.1 logMAR in the first month. About 5 months after the operation, PCO was first described on the left eye leading to a decrease in visual acuity to +0.4 logMAR (CDVA). Due to PCO, Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was conducted 5 months after the cataract operation on the left eye. 12 shots were applied at 2.7 mJ. The following appointments showed a continuously reduced visual acuity of +1.3 logMAR (uncorrected) on the left eye and the patient described blurry and ‘swirled’ central vision. By slightly tilting his head and thus not using the center of his optic axis, he would be able to see sharper. Slit lamp examination showed a small optical change inside the IC-8® IOL not resembling a pit but believed to be a small pocket of air. Due to the ongoing symptoms as well as the reduced VA, the seemingly damaged small aperture IOL was exchanged for a three-piece hydrophobic acrylic monofocal lens, which was also placed in the posterior chamber. The explanted IC-8® was sent to the Intermountain Ocular Research Center at the University of Utah for further analysis. Results from gross and light microscopic analysis showed that the change caused by the Nd:YAG laser application consisted of a localized optical area containing carbon black nanoparticles used for the circular mask within the IOL.
Conclusions and importance: When dealing with PCO and performing Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in eyes with an IC-8® IOL implant, the laser shots should be applied either inside the aperture or outside of the black circular mask of the IOL. Otherwise, the Nd:YAG laser can lead to bursts of carbon nanoparticles within the IOL which may cause optical phenomena as well as decreased visual acuity possibly resulting in an IOL exchange.

• Piriform cortex and amgydala can be separated based on their distinct structural connectivity.
• Similar to histological findings, the connectivity of the piriform cortex suggests posterior frontal and temporal subregions.
• Subregions of the piriform cortex have distinct connectivity profiles.
• Anterior PC extended into ventrotemporal PC posteriorly, which has not been described before, requiring further investigation.
• All parcellations were made publicly available.
Abstract
The anatomy of the human piriform cortex (PC) is poorly understood. We used a bimodal connectivity-based-parcellation approach to investigate subregions of the PC and its connectional differentiation from the amygdala.
One hundred (55 % female) genetically unrelated subjects from the Human Connectome Project were included. A region of interest (ROI) was delineated bilaterally covering PC and amygdala, and functional and structural connectivity of this ROI with the whole gray matter was computed. Spectral clustering was performed to obtain bilateral parcellations at granularities of k = 2–10 clusters and combined bimodal parcellations were computed. Validity of parcellations was assessed via their mean individual-to-group similarity per adjusted rand index (ARI).
Individual-to-group similarity was higher than chance in both modalities and in all clustering solutions. The amygdala was clearly distinguished from PC in structural parcellations, and olfactory amygdala was connectionally more similar to amygdala than to PC. At higher granularities, an anterior and ventrotemporal and a posterior frontal cluster emerged within PC, as well as an additional temporal cluster at their boundary. Functional parcellations also showed a frontal piriform cluster, and similar temporal clusters were observed with less consistency. Results from bimodal parcellations were similar to the structural parcellations. Consistent results were obtained in a validation cohort.
Distinction of the human PC from the amygdala, including its olfactory subregions, is possible based on its structural connectivity alone. The canonical fronto-temporal boundary within PC was reproduced in both modalities and with consistency. All obtained parcellations are freely available.
Exploration of macrofungi in the Jammu and Kashmir regions, India, led to the discovery of two novel species, described herein as Lactarius indohirtipes sp. nov. and L. sharmai sp. nov. This paper presents detailed morphological descriptions and illustrations, as well as a phylogenetic analysis based on nrITS sequences. A comparative analysis with related species is also included.
In this study, we describe two new species of Mesobiotus based on morphological data collected through light and scanning electron microscopy. Descriptions include DNA sequences of four commonly used molecular markers (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, ITS-2, and COI). Mesobiotus efa sp. nov. was discovered in North-West Russia and belongs to the group of species with smooth cuticle, harmsworthi-type OCA, typical Mesobiotus claws IV with unindented lunules, and egg chorion with reticulated processes in form of ‘sharp wide cones’ or ‘cones with long slender endings’, egg process bases with well-developed crone of dark thickenings without finger-like projections, and egg shell surface between the processes with ridges without reticulation, areolation or semi-areolation. It can be distinguished from all know species of this group by a unique combination of morphological and morphometric characters. Mesobiotus vulpinus sp. nov. was found in the Russian Far East, and is similar to Mesobiotus mauccii by having an egg chorion with polygonal relief. The new species can be distinguished from M. mauccii by having a narrower buccal tube, by details of oral cavity armature, and by longer egg chorion processes. Furthermore, we provide results of the phylogenetic analyses of the genus Mesobiotus conducted in this study.
A comprehensive checklist and host plants of Aphididae (Aphidomorpha: Hemiptera) from Pakistan
(2024)
The family Aphididae (Hemiptera) represents one of the most diverse groups of sap-sucking insect pests referred to as aphids or plant-lice, with 366 species reported in Pakistan, associated with wide array of agricultural and horticultural crops, including fruit and forest trees, weeds, grasses, shrubs, and vines. This work aims to provide an updated checklist of aphids and their associated host plants documented across various regions of Pakistan. The checklist consolidates information from various published literature sources, including annotated checklists, regional distribution data, and host plant records from Pakistan. In this study, we present an annotated checklist of 366 aphid species, belonging to 134 genera and 11 subfamilies, associated with a total of 359 host plant species stretched over 84 families in Pakistan.
Although semi-aquatic cockroaches have been known for a long time, these insects remain little studied and their diversity underestimated. While a few species are known from Asia or South America, only a single one is known to be associated with water in Africa. Here, we report two species of semi-aquatic cockroaches of the subfamily Epilamprinae from Cameroon. One of these species is new: Rhabdoblatta fotoi Nyame Mbia, Legendre & Biram à Ngon sp. nov. Africalolampra camerunensis (Borg, 1902) comb. nov. was also found associated to these streams and we provide an extended description of this species, as well as for Africalolampra stipata comb. nov., also known from streams in West Africa. Another species was found in Cameroonian streams and is described here, although only identified at the family level (Blattellidae). The descriptions are based on morpho-anatomic characters, including male genitalia. Because nymphs were found primarily associated with water – more than adults – we provide a description of nymphs whenever possible. We provide molecular data (12S rRNA marker) for two of these water-associated species that we compared with published and unpublished sequences of Epilamprinae in a Maximum Likelihood approach. We also illustrate all but one species from continental Africa in the genera Africalolampra and Rhabdoblatta, including R. punctipennis (Saussure, 1895) which we reinstate. We provide a map and list of localities for Africalolampra and Rhabdoblatta spp. from continental Africa and Madagascar, as well as an identification key for species of Africalolampra. We finally discuss putative adaptations of semi-aquatic cockroaches.
A taxonomic study on the Afrotropical genera Afrepipona Giordani Soika, 1965 and Afrepsilon gen. nov. is presented. Twenty new species are described, of which 15 are in Afrepipona (Afrepipona anomala sp. nov., Afrepipona cellularis sp. nov., Afrepipona clonata sp. nov., Afrepipona cuprea sp. nov., Afrepipona lamellata sp. nov., Afrepipona lamptula sp. nov., Afrepipona lobulata sp. nov., Afrepipona meridionalis sp. nov., Afrepipona occidentalis sp. nov., Afrepipona orientalis sp. nov., Afrepipona punctatissima sp. nov., Afrepipona scabra sp. nov., Afrepipona segregata sp. nov., Afrepipona ulterior sp. nov., Afrepipona vulcanica sp. nov.) and five are in Afrepsilon (Afrepsilon aterrimum gen. et sp. nov., Afrepsilon ferrugineoaureum gen. et sp. nov., Afrepsilon hybridum gen. et sp. nov., Afrepsilon minor gen. et sp. nov., and Afrepsilon pictum gen. et sp. nov.). Afrepipona lamptoensis Giordani Soika, 1965 is withdrawn from synonymy with A. angusta (de Saussure, 1863) and subsequently revalidated. Afrepipona unifasciata Gusenleitner, 2012 is transferred to the genus Antodynerus de Saussure, 1855 (Antodynerus unifasciatus comb. nov.). Keys to all known species are provided.
Ophioderma teres (Lyman, 1860), an ophiuroid previously believed to have a wide distribution in the eastern Pacific, has been found to have an unclear taxonomic identity. While considered a well-known species, recent studies have revealed that O. teres lacks a holotype and has vague boundaries with its congeners Ophioderma teres unicolor H.L. Clark, 1940 and Ophioderma sodipallaresi Caso, 1986, as well as with two additional new morphotypes detected in Mexico and Nicaragua, causing continuous misidentifications. This study utilized an integrative taxonomy approach based on morphologic, morphometric, and molecular evidence to clarify the taxonomic status of O. teres, O. sodipallaresi, O. teres unicolor, and the two new morphotypes. Data integration led to the following results: 1) the neotype designation and redescription of O. teres; 2) the proposal of O. sodipallaresi as a junior synonym of O. teres; 3) the status change of O. unicolor stat. nov. from subspecies to species, and 4) the description of the morphotypes as the new species Ophioderma aija sp. nov. and Ophioderma bichi sp. nov. An identification key to the eastern Pacific species of Ophioderma was also developed. This work contributes to the knowledge of Ophioderma in the region, increasing the number of described species and providing resources for their accurate identification.
The monophyly of Theraphosinae is supported by both morphological and molecular phylogenies. However, intergeneric relationships often show polytomies and branches with low support. A previous phylogenetic study proposed an intergeneric relationship for the subfamily based on molecular data and divided it into three tribes: Grammostolini, Hapalopini and Theraphosini. However, not all genera of Theraphosinae were sampled, and some relationships were inferred based on morphological similarities. Regarding the Hapalopini from Brazil, the relationships of some genera are still uncertain, such as Kochiana, Catanduba, and Munduruku. In this paper, we describe four new species of Hapalopini from Brazil: Cyriocosmus paresi sp. nov., Hapalopus akroa sp. nov., H. guidonae sp. nov., and K. fukushimae sp. nov. In addition, we propose an updated diagnosis for these three genera and for the species K. brunnipes and M. bicoloratum.
Scalibregmatidae Malmgren, 1867 is a family of annelids, with only few taxa reported from Brazil. In this work, we describe two new species of Asclerocheilus Ashworth, 1901. The new species A. geiseae sp. nov. and A. blakei sp. nov. were collected during scientific expeditions to the Espírito Santo and Campos sedementary basins. These expeditions were coordinated by PETROBRAS/CENPES. The species A. geiseae sp. nov. is unique among its congeners by the presence of acicular spines with rounded and curved tips in two rows. The second species, A. blakei sp. nov., differs from its congeners by the combination of the presence of a trapezoidal prostomium, acicular spines on chaetigers 1–3, lyrate chaetae from chaetiger 3 on notopodia and 2 on neuropodia. Moreover, we report the species A. tropicus Blake, 1981 from the localities sampled on this study. We also provide an identification key to all species of Asclerocheilus of the world.
Description of four new species of the Neotropical genus Scione Walker, 1850 (Diptera: Tabanidae)
(2024)
After 94 years after the last revision of the genus and after 22 years since the last species was named, we describe four new species of Scione from Ecuador and Peru: S. cooperi sp. nov., S. gertrudeae sp. nov., S. kroeberi sp. nov. and S. merianae sp. nov. We provide diagnoses, descriptions, photographs and discussions for each of the species.
Five new species of the spider genus Heteropoda Latreille, 1804 (Araneae: Sparassidae) from China
(2024)
Five new species of Heteropoda (Araneae, Sparassidae, Heteropodinae) are described from China: H. bawanglingensis sp. nov. (female; Hainan), H. dulongensis sp. nov. (male, female; Yunnan), H. hainanensis sp. nov. (male, female; Hainan), H. longa sp. nov. (female; Guizhou), and H. vaginalis sp. nov. (female; Yunnan). We provide descriptions and illustrations for each species as well as a distribution map in the current paper.
Species lists play an important role in biology and practical domains like conservation, legislation, biosecurity and trade regulation. However, their effective use by non-specialist scientific and societal users is sometimes hindered by disagreements between competing lists. While it is well-known that such disagreements exist, it remains unclear how prevalent they are, what their nature is, and what causes them. In this study, we argue that these questions should be investigated using methods based on taxon concept rather than methods based on Linnaean names, and use such a concept-based method to quantify disagreement about bird classification and investigate its relation to research effort. We found that there was disagreement about 38% of all groups of birds recognized as a species, more than three times as much as indicated by previous measures. Disagreement about the delimitation of bird groups was the most common kind of conflict, outnumbering disagreement about nomenclature and disagreement about rank. While high levels of conflict about rank were associated with lower levels of research effort, this was not the case for conflict about the delimitation of bird groups. This suggests that taxonomic disagreement cannot be resolved simply by increasing research effort.
Sipunculans are a poorly studied group in the Tropical Eastern Pacific. For the Southern Mexican Pacific (SMP) there is only one record of a sipunculan species. The main objective of this work was to determine the species composition of the phylum Sipuncula present in the SMP. The study area covered three Mexican states: Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas; specimens from 28 localities were examined from both intertidal and subtidal zones. A total of 551 specimens were reviewed, from which 11 species were identified. Five of them have previously been recorded in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP): Apionsoma (A.) hespera comb. nov., A. (Edmondsius) pectinatum, Aspidosiphon (A.) elegans, Phascolosoma (P.) puntarenae and Themiste (T.) hennahi; four species are similar to nominal species: Sipunculus (S.) cf. polymyotus, Siphonosoma cf. vastum, Siphonosoma cf. cumanense and Phascolosoma (P.) cf. perlucens; and two new species are described: Aspidosiphon (Paraspidosiphon) cutleri sp. nov. and Aspidosiphon (Paraspidosiphon) pastori sp. nov. A checklist and an identification key for all sipunculan species from the TEP are presented. The checklist includes 53 taxa, 25 of which are questionable records. This work generated 11 new records of sipunculans in the SMP and five new records in the TEP.
Using (2712±14) × 106 ψ(2S) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we search for the decays ηc(2S)→ωω and ηc(2S)→ωϕ via the process ψ(2S)→γηc(2S). Evidence of ηc(2S)→ωω is found with a statistical significance of 3.2σ. The branching fraction is measured to be B(ηc(2S)→ωω)=(5.65±3.77(stat.)±5.32(syst.))×10−4. No statistically significant signal is observed for the decay ηc(2S)→ωϕ. The upper limit of the branching fraction at the 90\% confidence level is determined to be B(ψ(2S)→γηc(2S),ηc(2S)→ωϕ)<2.24×10−7. We also update the branching fractions of χcJ→ωω and χcJ→ωϕ decays via the ψ(2S)→γχcJ transition. The branching fractions are determined to be B(χc0→ωω)=(10.63±0.11±0.46)×10−4, B(χc1→ωω)=(6.39±0.07±0.29)×10−4, B(χc2→ωω)=(8.50±0.08±0.38)×10−4, B(χc0→ωϕ)=(1.18±0.03±0.05)×10−4, B(χc1→ωϕ)=(2.03±0.15±0.12)×10−5, and B(χc2→ωϕ)=(9.37±1.07±0.59)×10−6, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.
Biological drug substance (DS) is typically stored frozen to increase stability. However, freezing and thawing (F/T) of DS can impact product quality and therefore F/T processes need to be controlled. Because active F/T systems for DS bottles are lacking, freezing is often performed uncontrolled in conventional freezers, and thawing at ambient temperature or using water baths.
In this study, we evaluated a novel device for F/T of DS in bottles, which can be operated in conventional freezers, generating a directed air stream around bottles. We characterized the F/T geometry and process performance in comparison to passive F/T using temperature mapping and analysis of concentration gradients. The device was able to better control the F/T process by inducing directional bottom-up F/T. As a result, it reduced cryo-concentration during freezing as well as ice mound formation. However, freezing with the device was dependent on freezer performance, i.e. prolonged process times in a highly loaded freezer were accompanied by increased cryo-concentrations. Thawing was faster compared to without the device, but had no impact on concentration gradients and was slower compared to thawing in a water bath.
High-performance freezers might be required to fully exploit the potential of directional freezing with this device and allow F/T process harmonization and scaling across sites.
In this paper, we construct a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) model to examine the implications of dual rates for green lending. We demonstrate that implementing a distinct interest rate for banks engaged in green lending can effectively mitigate transition risks while channeling more capital towards green production sectors and firms for an immediate cut of emissions and net zero emission economy targets.
The PhD addresses the feasibility of reconstructing open charm mesons with the Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment, which will be installed at the FAIR accelerator complex at Darmstadt/Germany. The measurements will be carried out by means of a dedicated Micro Vertex Detector (MVD), which will be equipped with CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS). The feasibility of reconstructing the particles with a proposed detector setup was studied.
To obtain conclusive results, the properties of a MAPS prototype were measured in a beam test at the CERN-SPS accelerator. Based on the results achieved, a dedicated simulation software for the sensors was developed and implemented into the software framework of CBM (CBMRoot). Simulations on the reconstruction of D0-mesons were carried out. It is concluded that the reconstruction of those particles is possible.
The PhD introduces the physics motivation of doing open charm measurements, represents the results of the measurements of MAPS and introduces the innovative simulation model for those sensors as much as the concept and results of simulations of the D0 reconstruction.
Why do banks issue contingent convertible debt? To answer this question we study comprehensive data covering all issues by publicly traded banks in Europe of contingent convertible bonds (CoCos) that count as additional tier 1 capital (AT1). We find that banks with lower asset volatility are more likely to issue AT1 CoCos than their riskier counterparts, but that CDS spreads do not react following issue announcements. Our estimates therefore suggest that agency costs play a crucial role in banks' ability to successfully issue CoCos. The agency costs may be higher for CoCos than for equity explaining why we observe riskier or lowly capitalized banks to issue equity rather than CoCos.
Over the last few decades, considerable attention has focused on small-scale studies of invasive plants and invaded systems. Unfortunately, small scale studies rarely provide comprehensive insight into the complexities of biological invasions at macroscales. Systematic and repeated monitoring of biological invasions at broad scales are rare. In this report, we highlight a unique invasive plant database from the national Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program of the United States Forest Service. We demonstrate the importance and capability of this subcontinental-wide database by showcasing several critical macroscale invasion patterns that have emerged from its initial analysis: (1) large portion of the forests systems (39%) in the United States are impacted by invasive plants, (2) forests in the eastern United States harbor more invasive species than the western regions, (3) human land-use legacies at regional to national scalesb may drive large-scale invasion patterns. This accumulated dataset, which continues to grow in temporal richness with repeated measurements, will allow the understanding of invasion patterns and processes at multi-spatial and temporal scales. Such insights are not possible from smaller-scale studies, illustrating the benefit that can be gained by investing in the development of regional to continental-wide invasion monitoring programs elsewhere.
Most elements heavier than iron are synthesized in stars during neutron capture reactions in the r- and s-process. The s-process nucleosynthesis is composed of the main and weak component. While the s-process is considered to be well understood, further investigations using nucleosynthesis simulations rely on measured neutron capture cross sections as crucial input parameters. Neutron capture cross sections
relevant for the s-process can be measured using various experimental methods. A prominent example is the activation method relying on the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction as a neutron source, which has the advantage of high neutron intensities and is able to create a quasi-stellar neutron spectrum at kBT = 25 keV. Other neutron sources able to provide quasi-stellar spectra at different energies suffer from lower neutron intensities. Simulations using the PINO tool suggest the neutron activation of samples with different neutron spectra, provided by the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction, and a subsequent linear combination of the obtained spectrum-averaged cross sections
to determine the Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) at various energies of astrophysical relevance. To investigate the accuracy of the PINO tool at proton energies between the neutron emission threshold at Ep = 1880.4 keV and 2800 keV,
measurements of the 7Li(p,n)7Be neutron fields are presented, which were carried out at the PTB Ion Accelerator Facility at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig. The neutron fields of ten different proton energies were measured.
The presented neutron fields show a good agreement at proton energies Ep = 1887, 1897, 1907, 1912 and 2100 keV. For the other proton energies, E p = 2000, 2200, 2300, 2500, and 2800 keV, differences between measurement and simulation were found and discussed. The obtained results can be used to benchmark and adapt the PINO tool and provide crucial information for further improvement of the neutron activation method for astrophysics.
An application for the 7Li(p,n)7Be neutron fields is presented as an activation experiment campaign of gallium, an element that is mostly produced during the weak s-process in massive stars. The available cross section data for the 69,71Ga(n,γ)
reactions, mostly determined by activation measurements, show differences up toa factor of three. To improve the data situation, activation measurements were carried out using the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction. The neutron capture cross sections for
a quasi-stellar neutron spectrum at kBT = 25 keV were determined for 69Ga and 71Ga.
In this dissertation the formal abstraction and verification of analog circuit is examined. An approach is introduced that automatically abstracts a transistor level circuit with full Spice accuracy into a hybrid automaton (HA) in various output languages. The generated behavioral model exhibits a significant simulation speed-up compared to the original netlist, while maintaining an acceptable accuracy, and can be therefore used in various verification and validation routines. On top of that, the generated models can be formally verified against their Spice netlists, making the obtained models correct by construction.
The generated abstract models can be extended to enclose modeling as well as technology dependent parameter variations with little over approximations. As these models enclose the various behaviors of the sampled netlists, the obtained models are of significant importance as they can replace several simulations with just a single reachability analysis or symbolic simulation. Moreover, these models can be as well be used in different verification routines as demonstrated in this dissertation.
As the obtained models are described by HAs with linear behaviors in the locations, the abstract models can be as well compositionally linked, allowing thereby the abstraction of complex analog circuits.
Depending on the specified modeling settings, including for example the number of locations of the HA and the description of the system behavior, the accuracy, speedup, and various additional properties of the HA can be influenced. This is examined in detail in this dissertation. The underlying abstraction process is first covered in detail. Several extensions are then handled including the modeling of the HAs with parameter variations. The obtained models are then verified using various verification methodologies. The accuracy and speed-up of the abstraction methodology is finally evaluated on several transistor level circuits ranging from simple operational amplifiers up to a complex circuits.
Mast cells are long-lived tissue-resident leukocytes, located most abundantly in the skin and mucosal surfaces. They belong to the first line of defence of the body, protecting against invading pathogens, toxins and allergens. Their secretory granules are densely packed with a plethora of mediators, which can be released immediately upon activation of the cell. Next to their role in IgE-mediated allergic diseases and in promoting inflammation, potential anti-inflammatory functions have been assigned to mast cells, depending on the biological setting. The aim of this thesis was to contribute to a better understanding of the role of mast cells during the resolution of a local inflammation. Therefore, in a first of step a suitable model of a local inflammation had to be identified. Since comparison of the two Toll-like receptor (TLR)-agonists zymosan and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which are most commonly used to locally induce inflammation, revealed a systemic response after LPS-injection and a local inflammation after zymosan-injection, the TLR2 agonist zymosan was chosen for the subsequent experiments. Multi epitope ligand cartography (MELC) combined with statistical neighbourhood analysis showed that mast cells are located in an anti-inflammatory microenvironment next to M2 macrophages during resolution of inflammation, while neutrophils and M1 macrophages are located in the zymosan-filled core of the inflammation. Furthermore, infiltrating neutrophils during peak inflammation and an increasing population of macrophages phagocytosing neutrophils during resolution of inflammation could be observed. MELC as well as flow cytometry analysis of mast cell-deficient mice revealed a decreased phagocytosing activity of macrophages in the absence of mast cells. As an untargeted approach to identify mast cell-derived mediators induced by zymosan, mRNA sequencing of bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMCs) was performed. Gene ontology term analysis of the sequencing data revealed the induction of the type I interferon (IFN) pathway as the dominant response. Contradicting previous studies, I could validate the production of IFN-β by mast cells in response to zymosan and LPS in vitro. Furthermore IFN-β expression by mast cells was also detected in vivo. In accordance with previous studies regarding other cell types the release of IFN-β by mast cells depends on endosomal signaling. The potential of IFN-β to enhance the phagocytosing activity of macrophages has been demonstrated recently. Besides IFN-β, various other mediators with reported enhancing effects on macrophage phagocytosis were also induced by zymosan in BMMCs, including Interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-13, and Prostaglandin (PG) E2. Thus, either one of these mediators alone or a combination of them could promote macrophage phagocytosis.
In conclusion, I herein present mast cells as a novel source for IFN-β induced by non-viral TLR ligands and demonstrate their enhancing effect on macrophage phagocytosis, thereby contributing to the resolution of inflammation.

First-principles modeling techniques offer the ability to simulate a wide range of systems under different physical conditions, such as temperature, pressure, and composition, without relying on empirical knowledge. Density functional theory (DFT), a quantum mechanical method, has become an exceptionally successful framework for materials science modeling. Employing DFT makes it possible to gain valuable insights into the fundamental state of a system, enabling the reliable determination of equilibrium crystal structures. Over time, DFT has become an essential tool that can be incorporated into various schemes for predicting the properties of a material related to its structure, insulating/metallic behavior, magnetism, and optics. DFT is regularly applied in numerous fields, spanning from fundamental subjects in condensed matter physics to the study of large-scale phenomena in geosciences. In the latter, the effectiveness of DFT stems from its ability to simulate the properties found on the Earth, other planets, and meteorites, which may pose challenges for their direct study or laboratory investigation.
In this thesis, a comprehensive examination of a family of monosulfides and a perovskite heterostructure was conducted. These materials are relevant for their potential applications in technology, energy harvesting, and in the case of monosulfides, their speculated abundance on the planet Mercury.
Firstly, a DFT approach was used to analyze two non-magnetic monosulfides, CaS and MgS. We determined their structural properties and then focused on the modeling of their reflectivity in the infrared region. The calculation of the reflectivity considered both harmonic and anharmonic contributions. In the harmonic limit, the non-analytic correction was employed to accurately determine the LO/TO splitting, which is necessary to delimit the retstrahlend band, that is, the maximum of the reflectivity. The anharmonic effects given by up to three-phonon and isotopic scatterings, which were included using perturbation theory, primarily smeared the reflectivity spectra edges in the high-wave region.
Secondly, four polymorphs of MnS were studied using a combination of first-principles methods to simulate their antiferromagnetic (AFM) and paramagnetic (PM) states. The integration of DFT+$U$ with special quasirandom structures (SQS) supercells, and occupation matrix control techniques was crucial for achieving convergence, structural optimization accuracy, and obtaining finite energy band gaps and local magnetic moments in the PM phases. The addition of the Hubbard $U$ correction was necessary to treat the highly-correlated Mn $d$-electrons. The success of our approach was clear based on our electronic structure predictions for the PM rock-salt B1-MnS polymorph. Experimentally this phase has been observed to be an insulator, but multiple \emph{ab initio} works resulted previously in metallic behavior. Our computations, on the other hand, predicted insulating and magnetic properties that compare well with available measurements. Additionally, the pressure-field stability of the four MnS polymorphs was studied. In the case of the PM phases, B1-MnS was identified to be the most stable up to about 21 GPa, then transforming into the B31-MnS polymorph. This finding was in close agreement with high-pressure experiments reporting a similar phase transformation. The optical properties of B1-, B4-, and B31-MnS were also simulated. The SQS technique was used to obtain soft-mode-free phonon band structures within the harmonic approximation. Then, the anharmonic effects were included, and the reflectivity was calculated for B1-MnS and B4-MnS. In both cases, a good agreement for the LO/TO splitting was achieved in comparison to experimental results.
Lastly, the oxygen-deficient heterostructure of LaAlO$_{3-\delta}$ /SrTiO$_{3-\delta}$ was investigated also employing DFT+$U$, with a particular emphasis on the potential impact of vacancy clustering at the interface. Six distinct configurations of pairs of vacancies were studied and their energies were compared to find the most stable one. The orbital reconstruction of Ti orbitals was also examined based on their location with respect to the vacancies and the local magnetic moments were calculated. The final results showed that linearly arranged vacancies located opposite to Ti ions give the most energetically stable configuration.
The introduction of a trigonal boron atom into a polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) core is an extremely powerful tool to provide organic scaffolds with optoelectronic properties as well as optimal packing in the solid state. However, boron-doped PAHs (B-PAHs) often display low processability due to their poor solubility. The distortion of the molecular scaffold provides a suitable strategy to enhance the solubility properties of B-PAHs while maintaining good stacking properties and sufficient electronic conjugation.
Extreme distortion of the molecular structure can be achieved in helical-shaped PAHs, namely helicenes which are screw-shaped inherently chiral polycycles, formed by ortho-fused aromatic or heteroaromatic rings. The presence of a helical structure in B-PAHs is expected to strongly influence their physico-chemical properties leading to compounds characterized by peculiar features promising for applications in next generation functional materials. Despite the great potential of this class of compounds, only few examples of borahelicenes have been reported in the literature and those mainly consist of carbohelicene-based structures. However, the considerable structural diversity achievable by introducing different boraheterocycles (oxaborine, borole, borepin) and other heteroaromatic rings (thiophene, furan, pyrrole) into the same helical scaffold, suggests that a large variety of compounds with intriguing features could be accessible via currently unexplored synthetic routes. The design, synthesis, and properties investigation of new boraheterohelicenes (BHHs) is therefore a relevant research topic and is the object of this PhD project, aimed to obtain several BHHs with structural diversity, as well as to study their reactivity, electrochemical and photophysical features for better understanding their potential as building blocks for material science.
The thesis work was carried out in part at the University of Milan in the laboratories of Prof. Emanuela Licandro and in part at the Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Matthias Wagner, within a co-tutelle programme. Owing to the long-standing expertise of Prof. Licandro group in the synthesis of tetrathia helicenes and that of Prof. Dr. Wagner group in the synthesis of boron-doped PAHs (e.g. boron helicene 4BH; Figure 1), I conceived this PhD project designing a series of thiahelicenes containing one or more B-O bond into the helical scaffold.Tetrathia helicenes, consisting of thiophene and benzene rings fused in an alternating fashion, are configurationally stable heterohelicenes which exist as pair of enantiomers.
This class of molecules is particularly interesting since it merges the properties of oligothiophenes with those of helicenes, giving rise to systems with peculiar electronic and chiroptical properties which make them appealing building blocks for applications in manifold fields of science, including optoelectronics, catalysis and biology.
The introduction of trigonal boron atom into a thiahelicene scaffold gives rise to a novel class of unexplored boron π-conjugated molecules with potentially interesting features.
The present Ph.D. thesis was therefore intended to provide a meaningful contribution in the development of innovative and versatile syntheses of BO-doped tetrathia helicenes as well as the study of their stereochemical and optoelectronic properties to identify potential applications of these systems in material science. The first selected structures containing one or two oxaborine rings in the helical scaffold are shown in figure 2. The presence of the bulky mesityl group at the boron atom is necessary to ensure stability to the molecule.
It is noteworthy that compound 2 is the skeletal isomer of 1, as the direction of the B-O bond is opposite in the two molecules. In the course of the research work, after the evaluation of the photophysical properties of 1, helicene 2 was designed to get information on the structure-property relationship and evaluate how the position of the BO-bond into the helical scaffold can influence the electronic properties of BO-doped thiahelicenes.
This work deals with the theoretical investigation of the vibrationally promoted electronic resonance (VIPER) experiment, the intramolecular energy transfer within a rhodamine-BODIPY antenna system initiated by two-photon excitation and a computational study of the photochemical mechanism of the uncaging of the [7-(dimethylamino)coumarin-4-yl]methyl (DEACM) class of photocages . In continuation to Jan von Cosel’s work, the setup for the theoretical investigation of the VIPER experiment has been extended to two-photon absorption (TPA) also including the first-order Herzberg-Teller (HT) effects which are dependent on changes with respect to nuclear coordinates.
The VIPER experiment constitutes an extended form of two-dimensional infrared (2DIR) spectroscopy with a sequence of infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) or visible (vis) pulses. The molecular system under probe is excited initially by a narrow-band IR pump pulse and then electronically excited by an off-resonant UV/vis pulse. An IR probe pulse is applied afterwards to probe the system and record a 2DIR spectrum in combination with the first pulse. Since the lifetime of the vibrational excitation is very short, the electronic excitation by the UV/vis pulse is used to enlarge the lifetime of the excitation in the molecule and thus enable measurements on a longer timescale. Therefore, it becomes easier to study dynamical photochemical processes on long timescales. In the VIPER experiment with TPA, the UV/vis pulse is replaced by a near-infrared (NIR) pulse which offers an intrinsic 3D resolution, minimzed photodamage, a lower noise level and an increased penetration depth. This makes TPA highly attractive for biological systems among a wide range of other possible applications.
The computation of the vibrationally resolved electronic absorption spectra accounts for the Franck-Condon (FC) contributions which are independent of the nuclear framework as well as the HT effects which are dependent on the nuclear coordinates. The FC contributions are dominant for electronically-allowed transitions whereas HT contributions could be important for weakly-allowed or forbidden transitions. Laying emphasis on TPA, the test systems used belong to the category of two-photon active compounds. The initial candidate is dimethylaminonitrodibenzofuran (DMA-NDBF) which has been reported to be a two-photon only caging compound. The other system is a well-known laser dye, a rhodamine derivative of the commercially available rhodamine 101 (Rh101). Rhodamines are also recognized for their excellent TPA characteristics.
The findings for both the test systems show interesting contrasts. The one-photon absorption (OPA) and TPA spectrum together with vibronic couplings present the same lineshape in case of DMA- NDBF and also the HT effects have very weak contributions to the vibronic spectrum. Insignificant HT effects are quite typical for electronically allowed transitions. Overall, the NO2 bending mode exhibits the strongest change in the absorption spectrum upon vibrational pre-excitation, even stronger than in the case of different ring distortion modes that usually show a high VIPER activity. In the case of rhodamine, the vibronic OPA spectrum is pre-dominantly the FC spectrum and the HT couplings have a very weak contribution. The vibronic TPA spectrum is entirely dominated by the HT contributions and hence, the vibrationally resolved TPA spectrum of the rhodamine is a HT-only spectrum. Explanations towards this behaviour have been reported by Milojevich et al. which are holding the change in symmetry of the molecular orbital transitions from the ground to the excited state accountable. No significantly VIPER-active normal modes could be determined owing to the low magnitudes of their dimensionless displacements that are connected to the Huang-Rhys factors. Two ring distortion modes however have been probed but the intensity of their vibrational pre-excitation is observed to be very low.
The other part of this work is concerned with the estimation of the rate of the intramolecular energy transfer within rhodamine-BODIPY dyads. After the investigations on the prospective rhodamine derivatives, the Rho101 derivative shows the highest TPA activity. This linked together with the BODIPY derivative with styryl substituents through an acetylene bond has been probed theoretically as well as experimentally for the excitation energy transfer (EET).
Time-resolved spectroscopic measurements reveal an ultrafast energy transfer process on femtosecond timescales. The theoretical estimation of the EET rates through the Förster theory and the determination of the coupling between the donor and acceptor groups by the transition density cube (TDC) method falls short of the experimental results. Because of this disagreement, quantum dynamics simulations with the multi-layer multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) method have been performed on an adapted rhodamine-BODIPY molecular dyad which reveal that the energy transfer occurs through transient coherence whose mechanism cannot be described by Förster theory ...
