Why does the schooling gap close while the wage gap persists across country income comparisons?

The schooling gap diminishes because the services sector becomes more pronounced for high-income countries, and the paid hours gap closes. Although gender wage inequality persists across country income groups, differences in schooling years between females and males diminish. We assemble a novel dataset, calibrate a general equilibrium, multi-sector, -gender, and -production technology model, and show that gender-specific sectoral comparative advantages explain the paid hours and schooling gap decline from low- to high-income economies even when the wage gap persists. Additionally, our counterfactual analyses indicate that consumption subsistence and production share heterogeneity across both income groups and genders are essential to explain the co-decline of the schooling and paid hours gaps. Our results highlight effective mechanisms for policies aiming to reduce gender inequality in schooling and suggest that the schooling gap decline and the de-invisibilization of female paid work observed in high-income countries are linked by structural sector movements instead of wage inequality reductions.
Heart development is a dynamic process modulated by various extracellular and intracellular cues. Cardiac progenitors in vertebrates such as the zebrafish, migrate over to the midline after differentiation from the epiblast (Bakkers, 2011; Rosenthal & Harvey, 2010; Stainier et al., 1996; Trinh & Stainier, 2004). These progenitors form a cardiac disc at the midline which elongates into the linear heart tube. The differentiation and migration of cardiac precursors is modulated by signaling interactions between cardiac precursor cells and their extracellular environment known as the Extracellular Matrix (ECM). Studies have shown that Cell-ECM interactions play a crucial role in sculpting the heart during early morphogenic events (Davis CL, 1924; Männer & Yelbuz, 2019; Rosenthal & Harvey, 2010). One key factor to these processes is the presence of a specialized ECM known as the Basement Membrane (BM). Extracellular basement membrane proteins such as Fibronectin have been shown to modulate these very early migration processes of the cardiomyocyte progenitors (Trinh & Stainier, 2004). As the heart develops further, the linear heart tube is composed of myocardial cells with an inner endothelial cell lining separated by a layer of thick jelly like substance called the cardiac jelly (Barry A, 1948; Davis CL, 1924; Little et al., 1989). The cardiac jelly also called the cardiac basement membrane, has been shown to regulate distinct developmental events during cardiogenesis. This early CJ contains components of the basal lamina such as laminins, fibronectin, hyaluronan as well as non-fibrillar collagens such as Collagen IV (Little et al., 1989). In this study, I aimed to identify ECM molecules of the Basement Membrane in the heart and identify their role in the modulation of cardiac development and regeneration using the zebrafish as my model organism.
I identified genes belonging to the Zebrafish Matrisome expressed during cardiac developmental and regeneration and performed CRISPR/Cas9 sgRNA mediated mutagenesis. I also developed overexpression tools for these genes.
Agrinp168 mutants exhibited no obvious gross morphology defects during cardiac development and were adult viable. Adult mutants exhibited reduced cardiomyocyte proliferation, but no significant difference in cardiomyocyte dedifferentiation post cardiac cryoinjury.
Decorin overexpression through mRNA injections led to increased myocardial wall thickness and DN dcn overexpression through mRNA injections led to loss of cardiac looping during early development.
Mutants for Small Leucine Rich Proteoglycan (SLRP) prelp generated using CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis exhibited cardiovascular defects. Close observation of prelp mutant hearts revealed a reduced heart rate and impaired fractional shortening of the ventricle. prelp mutants exhibited an enlarged atrium at 48 hpf and 72 hpf as well as a reduced ventricle size at 72 hpf. Chamber size in the mutant hearts were enlarged irrespective of contractility of the heart. Mutants showed an increased number of Atrial cardiomyocytes, but no change in cell size. On the molecular level, extracellular Laminin localization was disrupted in prelp mutants along with an increase in thickness and volume of the cardiac HA in the CJ suggesting a potential compensatory role, or retention of immaturity of the cardiac jelly in the prelp mutants. Transcriptomics analysis on the prelp mutant hearts revealed downregulation of ECM organization and ECM-Receptor interaction processes in the mutants. Gene Ontology analysis on prelp mutants hearts transcriptome revealed increased MAPK signaling. Interestingly, genes related to degradation of cardiac HA and maturation of cardiac jelly were downregulated, and genes related to epithelial identity of cardiomyocytes were upregulated. Analysis of the mutant hearts at single cell resolution revealed increased number of mutants exhibiting rounded up cardiomyocytes and loss of apical Podocalyxin. Truncated forms of prelp were generated to identify domain specific roles for Prelp, and reintroduction of N-terminal truncated Prelp into the mutants rescued the basal lamina localization and cardiac jelly volume phenotypes. Myocardium specific re-establishment of prelp expression revealed a marked rescue of the mutant cardiovascular phenotype suggesting that tissue specific expression of prelp is not required so long as Prelp is secreted into the CJ. With these data, I’ve elucidated the role of ECM SLRPs in modulation of cardiac chamber morphogenesis process and regeneration of the heart.
Morphological malformations induced by tributyltin (TBT) exposure during embryonic development have already been characterized in various taxonomic groups, but, nonetheless, the molecular processes underlying these changes remain obscure. The present study provides the first genome-wide screening for differentially expressed genes that are linked to morphological alterations of gonadal tissue from chicken embryos after exposure to TBT. We applied a single injection of TBT (between 0.5 and 30 pg as Sn/g egg) into incubated fertile eggs to simulate maternal transfer of the endocrine disruptive compound. Methyltestosterone (MT) served as a positive control (30 pg/g egg). After 19 days of incubation, structural features of the gonads as well as genome-wide gene expression profiles were assessed simultaneously. TBT induced significant morphological and histological malformations of gonadal tissue from female embryos that show a virilization of the ovaries. This phenotypical virilization was mirrored by altered expression profiles of sex-dependent genes. Among these are several transcription and growth factors (e.g. FGF12, CTCF, NFIB), whose altered expression might serve as a set of markers for early identification of endocrine active chemicals that affect embryonic development by transcriptome profiling without the need of elaborate histological analyses.

Abstract
The cosmopolitan blow fly Lucilia sericata is often used in forensic case work for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). For this, the age of immature specimens developing on the dead body is calculated by measuring the time taken to reach the sampled developmental stage at a given temperature. To test whether regional developmental data of L. sericata is valid on a global scale, the time taken to reach different developmental stages was compared between a population from Mexico and one from Germany at two different constant temperatures.
The German population of L. sericata was collected in Frankfurt/Main, while the Mexican population originated near Oaxaca de Juarez and was transported to Germany in the larval stage. Only the F1 generation was used to avoid adaption of the Mexican flies. Eggs were immediately placed at 20 °C and 30 °C. Five times 30 freshly eclosed larvae per replicate (n = 5) were then transferred to a cup of minced meat in separate containers. The larvae were checked every 8 h for migration, pupariation or emergence of adult flies. The time at which the first individual and 50 % of the specimens per container entered each of these stages, was recorded.
Significant differences in the time of development between the two populations were observed at both temperatures. At 20 °C, the first specimens of the Mexican population reached all developmental stages a little (< 1 day to < 2 days) earlier than the German L. sericata. At 30 °C, the Mexican flies also reached the post-feeding stage slightly earlier (0.2 days). However, at 30 °C, the German flies started pupariation significantly earlier (after 5 days) than the Mexican flies (6.9 days) and the adults from Germany also emerged earlier (10.5 days compared to 13.1 days). The same pattern was observed when looking at 50 % of the total number of specimens per container. A comparison with previously published developmental studies was difficult as the experimental design varied widely between studies. However, the results were within the range of most studies. Our study has shown that age estimation can vary widely depending on the population on which the reference data used for the calculations are based. This highlights the importance of using local and population-specific developmental data for estimating the age of blow flies in case work.

Die Arbeit thematisiert den postulierten Zusammenhang zwischen Informationstechnologie (IT) und gesellschaftlichem Wandel. Von Interesse ist hier, wie das Paradigma technologiegetriebenen Wandels in unterschiedlichen Gesellschaften aufgenommen wird. Grundlage der vorliegenden Ergebnisse sind ethnographische Forschungen zwischen 1999 und 2002 in der Republik Zypern (Nicosia), Kolumbien (Bogotá), Rumänien (Timisoara), Indien (Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore) und den Vereinigten Staaten (San Francisco, Silicon Valley). Es wurden insgesamt achtzig Experten im IT-Sektor als Mitglieder transnationaler Berufsgemeinschaften in Technologiezentren und Innovationsregionen unter einer vergleichenden Perspektive zur Bedeutung von IT für Wandel in ihren Gesellschaften befragt. Aus kulturanthropologischer Perspektive kann der Begriff Informationstechnologie als Teil eines dichten "konzeptionellen Feldes" betrachtet werden, ausgestattet mit "kulturellen Logiken", in denen Konzepte wie Modernität, Entwicklung und Fortschritt zentral sind. Experten machen Eingaben in "konzeptionelle Konfigurationen" von Informationstechnologie und können als Akteure an "kulturellen Schnittstellen" identifiziert werden, die kulturelle Diskurse über Informationstechnologie als Werkzeug zur gesellschaftlichen Restrukturierung herstellen und transportieren. Unter dem Ansatz von akteursgetriebenen Wandlungsdynamiken können sie als konstitutiv für die Erzeugung kultureller Logiken der Veränderung und der Erneuerung, und damit einer "Kultur des Wandels" gelten. Die Untersuchung versteht sich als Beitrag zum Wissensfortschritt in der Kulturanthropologie zur Analyse von gegenwärtigen Modernisierungs- und Entwicklungsprozessen in gegenwärtigen Gesellschaften unter der Perspektive von Transnationalisierung.
