A systematic survey of grassland communities in central Slovakian sub-montane and montane regions (including the Kremnické vrchy Mts., Starohorské vrchy Mts., Veľká Fatra Mts., and Zvolenská kotlina Basin) was performed between 1996 and 2007. The main aim was to identify main environmental gradients in the studied vegetation and to estimate the most important individual variables responsible for the variation of their species composition. Along with the floristic composition, the environmental variables were either recorded in the field (altitude, slope, aspect), calculated (solar radiation, climatic data, and phytochorological affinity), or derived from available maps or GIS digital data layers (type of bedrock, soil parameters). These environmental variables were used as supplementary in the detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) or explanatory in the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). The affiliation of individual phytosociological relevés to associations was estimated by an electronic expert system for Slovak grassland communities. Altogether, 15 xero-, sub-xero- and mesophilous grassland associations were distinguished. Wet and fen meadows were analysed at the level of alliances. Unconstrained ordination revealed moisture and nutrient gradients as most important for the data set. By means of constrained ordination, the variability of the studied vegetation could be explained by a set of geological, topographic, phytochorological and derived climatic variables, although the percentage of explained variance was rather low and did not exceed 12% for all significant factors combined. Among individual variables, the geological bedrock type, climatic water balance, solar radiation, and slope played the most important role in determining the distribution and variability of individual grassland communities. Affinity to phytochorions determined according to local air temperature gradients was also significant. Soil properties played only a subordinate role in our analyses. The analysis of a more homogeneous subset of the data without wetland relevés gave similar results as the analysis of the complete data set. The differences in results of constrained and unconstrained ordinations are discussed together with the potential reasons for extremely high proportion of unexplained variance revealed by the variation partitioning methods.
One of the most important events in human history occurred during the Early Pleistocene: the dispersal of early hominins out of Africa and into Europe and Asia. In Western Europe, the earliest evidences of the genus Homo have been found in the Baza Basin, at the sites of Orce in the SE of the Iberian Peninsula. These sites contain fossils and lithic industry dated approximately as 1.4–1.3 Ma.While hominin remains and artifacts at Orce, as well as the accompanying fauna, have been extensively studied, the properties and evolution of the Early Pleistocene vegetation in the basin remain unknown. The general effect of climate change on the expansion of early hominins from Africa into Eurasia still remains unclear. It is not known if the Early Pleistocene climate changes and the development of glacials periods led to the extirpation of European communities, or if those communities were able to endure and persist through such adverse climatic periods. This open question highlights the need for climate and environmental analyses for the time before, during and after the first presence of Homo in Europe. This PhD thesis contributes to that need by the presentation of the first long pollen record of the Baza Basin, where the oldest hominin sites in Western Europe are found.
Der Harz ist eine alte, eigenartige Kulturlandschaft mit einer sehr vielseitigen Naturausstattung und einer wechselvollen Kulturgeschichte über gut 1000 Jahre. In mehreren Kapiteln werden zunächst die natürlichen Grundlagen (Erdgeschichte, Relief, Gesteine, Böden, Klima, Flora, Landschaftsgliederung) dargestellt. Die Kulturgeschichte insbesondere des Oberharzes ist von Entwicklungen, Rückschlägen und Niedergang des Bergbaus geprägt. Sie hat sich stark auf die Vegetation und das Landschaftsbild ausgewirkt. Eigentliche Haupterwerbs-Landwirtschaft war dagegen dort nie von Bedeutung. Selbst heute, wo Bergbau und Industrie erloschen oder rückläufig sind, gibt es viele Relikte und Nachwirkungen in der Landschaft, die auch die aktuelle Vegetation mit bestimmen. Im Harz bemüht man sich, einen sinnvollen Kompromiß zwischen Naturschutz und Tourismus zu finden. Abschließend wird versucht, eine erste Übersicht der Pflanzengesellschaften des Harzes zu geben.
"Che tempo, che tempo": Geology and Environment in Max Frisch’s 'Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän'

Critical readings of Frisch’s Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän [Man in the Holocene] have tended to read its heterogeneous and inter-medial form as a code for the mental disintegration of its protagonist. This paper argues instead that this feature can be seen as a poetological engagement with geological and climatic timescales. Due to its hybrid form, the incorporation of a multiplicity of textual fragments and pictorial representations, the text undermines both conventional definitions of narrative and representations of nature. Holozän’s non-linear structure establishes an aesthetic of slowness that ushers in an awareness of the utterly different time schemes of geological and climatic processes. Furthermore, the importance of the material features, such as an interplay between text and image and the disconnected, paratactical arrangement of sentences mirrors the novel’s focus on natural phenomena. Frisch’s narrative establishes a poetics that tries to reach beyond the confinements of an anthropocentric perspective and thereby subverts the borders between culture and environment.
