Die Mundart, die in der Stadt Bern gesprochen wird, ist eine ganz besondere, und viele Berner sind sich dessen auch schon seit langem bewusst. In der Stadt Bern wird nämlich nicht nur Berndeutsch gesprochen, sondern es gibt einige unterschiedliche Berner Mundarten: Patrizierberndeutsch, Burgerberndeutsch oder Stadtberndeutsch, Mattenberndeutsch sowie das Mattenenglische. Mit dieser Aufzählung, die Bernern keineswegs fremd ist, wird die Differenzierung unterschiedlicher sozialer Varietäten ausgedrückt. Stadtberndeutsch zeigt also schon lange verschiedene Sprachschichten, wie man sie in dieser Ausprägung in der Schweiz nur in wenigen Städten findet. Zu diesen genuinen Stadtberner Varianten kommt noch das Berndeutsche der Zuzüger hinzu, die sich zum Teil sprachlich assimiliert haben, die zum Teil einzelne Elemente und Eigenarten ihrer ursprünglichen Mundarten beibehalten oder sogar die Mundart ihrer früheren Heimat bewahrt haben.
The mother tongue at school

This paper focuses on a key contradiction in nineteenth century nationalist ideology, namely the opposition between the emphasis on the sacred status of the mother tongue, on the one hand, and the use of universal mandatory schooling as a means of homogenization, on the other. The influential philologist Jacob Grimm insisted that only people whose mother tongue was German counted as members of the German nation; the mother tongue was the key criterion of authentic belonging. Yet Grimm also realized that mandatory schooling imposed a uniform language across a wide territory, wiping out local dialects and effectively giving shape to a more linguistically unified people. He thus witnessed how modern mass instruction forged a more standardized culture at the expense of the more natural-seeming transmission of language within families. In Grimm's writings on education, the valorization of the mother is continually disturbed by the presence of a surrogate figure, the school teacher.
What are called 'natural languages' are artificial, often politically instituted and regulated, phenomena; a more accurate picture of speech practices around the globe is of a multidimensional continuum. This essay asks what the implications of this understanding of language are for translation, and focuses on the variety of Afrikaans known as Kaaps, which has traditionally been treated as a dialect rather than a language in its own right. An analysis of a poem in Kaaps by Nathan Trantraal reveals the challenges such a use of language constitutes for translation. A revised understanding of translation is proposed, relying less on the notion of transfer of meaning from one language to another and more on an active engagement with the experience of the reader.
