È stata effettuata una revisione sistematica sulle specie del genere Genista in Italia. L'indagine ha permesso di accertare la posizione tassonomica delle diverse entità che rappresentano il genere nel territorio italiano. In questa prima nota sono riferiti i risultati emersi dallo studio delle entità di sezioni a prevalente distribuzione in opposte zone del bacino del Mediterraneo e precisamente Erinacoides Spach del Mediterraneo occidentale ed Ephedrospartum Spach, Aureospartum sect. nova del Mediterraneo centrale. La sezione Erinacoides é rappresentata da G. salzmanii DC. in Sardegna e in Corsica, G. pichisermolliana sp. nov. in Sardegna, G. aspalathoides Lam. in Sicilia, Pantelleria, Africa settentrionale, G. desoleana Valso in Liguria, Toscana, Elba, Corsica e Sardegna, G. arbusensis Vals., G. sulcitana Valso e G. toluensis Valso in Sardegna. La sezione Aureospartum (sect. nova) comprende solo l'endemica sardo-sicula G. aetnensis (Raf.) DC. e l'Ephedrospartum racchiude G. ephedroides DC. presente in Sardegna, G. thyrrena Valso nell'arcipelago ponziano, G. gasparrini in Sicilia e G. cilentina Vals. in Campania e in Sicilia.
An 12 Bächen mit 50 Probestellen im Osnabrücker Hügelland wurde mit der "kicksampling"- Methode und Emergenzzelten die Gattung Electrogena untersucht, Es konnte unter den 1596 Individuen nur eine Art, E. ujhelyii (Sowa 1981), festgestellt werden. Diese Eintagsfliege präferiert im Untersuchungsgebiet das Hypokrenal und Epirhithral. Eine negative, hochsignifikante Korrelation zwischen der Häufigkeit und der Fließgeschwindigkeit wurde ermittelt. Für andere Parameter (Temperatur, pH, Leitfähigkeit, Gesamt- und Carbonathärte) konnte kein signifikanter Zusammenhang festgestellt werden. Die Emergenzperiode dauert bei E. ujhelyii mehrere Monate. Die Fekundität liegt mit 565 bis 1550 und einem Mittelwert von 954 EiernIWeibchen für eine Eintagsfliege niedrig. Weitere Details zur Biologie der Art werden mitgeteilt. Naturschutzrelevante Aspekte dieser Art werden diskutiert.

Aus dem Dogger Norddeutschlands und des nordwestlichen Polens sowie aus Dogger-Geschieben werden 1 Art der Neritimorpha und 30 Arten der Caenogastropoda beschrieben. Neu sind 7 Arten. 14 Arten werden bereits beschriebenen Arten zugeordnet und 10 unter offener Nomenklatur beschrieben. Neu sind die Gattung Bicorempterus (Aporrhaidae) und die Familien Naricopsinidae, Tripartellidae und Maturifusidae. Die beschriebenen Caenogastropoden zeigen mehr Gemeinsamkeiten zu bisher aus dem Dogger Mittel- und Westeuropas bekannt gemachten Faunen als es bei den Archaeogastropoda und den Heterostropha der Fall war. Die Gleichsetzung der hier vorgestellten Arten mit aus der Literatur bekannten ist oftmals problematisch. Taxonomisch relevante Details besonders der Frühontogenese wurden bisher kaum beschrieben. Auch Fragen der innerartlichen Variation wurden nur gelegentlich angesprochen. Vatopsis antiquus n. sp. ist der älteste genauer bekannte Vertreter der Cerithiopsoidea. Pictavia und Oonia konnten als Vertreter der Ampullospiridae erkannt werden (Ausbildung des Protoconchs). Naricopsina repräsentiert eine Gruppe, die möglicherweise zu den echten Naticidae führte. Einige Gattungen der Aporrhaidae können genauer gefaßt werden. Maturifusus ist der älteste sichere Vertreter der höheren Caenogastropoda (Neomesogastropoda).
Zwei Brombeerarten der Sektion Rubus ser. Glandulosi (Wimmer & Grabowski) Fokke werden neu beschrieben. Beide sind in Thüringen und Nordbayern verbreitet: Rubus exarmatus H. E. Weber & W. Jansen spec. nov. und Rubus perlongus H.E. Weber & W. Jansen spec. nov. Die Arten sind durch Fotos ihrer Holotypen abgebildet, ihre bekannte Verbreitung ist durch Rasterkarten dargestellt.
Am 1. November 2002 erschien die 3. Ausgabe des SNUDEBILLER, der weltweit ersten digitalen Fachzeitschrift zur Taxonomie, Biologie und Ökologie der Rüsselkäfer auf CD ROM. Der Rezensent hat lange gewartet und die Entwicklung des SNUDEBILLER-Reaktionsteams im CURCULIO-Institut in den letzten drei Jahren aufmerksam beobachtet, bevor er sich jetzt an eine erste Bestandsaufnahme wagt.
In this paper eight tribes (Gyrophaenini, Placusini, Homalotini, Diestotini, Falagriini, Athetini, Lomechusini, and Oxypodini), 19 genera and 42 species are recognized. Four genera (Brachyglyptaglossa n. gen. [Homalotini], Trisporusa n. gen., Daccordiusa n. gen. [Lomechusini], and Antistydatusa n. gen. [Oxypodini]) and 37 species are described as new. Each new genus and species is illustrated. Placusa fauveli Pasnik, 2001, from Sydney, is placed in synonymy with Placusa tridens Fauvel, 1878, from Sydney. A new combination to Spallioda for Calodera carissima Oliff is proposed.
Als Ergebnis eines aufwendigen, aber erfolgreichen Kreuzungsexperimentes von Acalles aeonii Wollaston 1864 x Acalles bodegensis Stüben 2000 wird folgende Synonymie endgültig bewiesen: Acalles aeonii Wollaston 1864 = Acalles bodegensis Stüben 2000 syn. nov. Zucht und Kreuzung der genannten Arten werden über zahlreiche Generationen hinweg an der Entwicklungspflanze Aeonium holochrysum W. & B. detailliert beschrieben und die Ergebnisse diskutiert. Mit einer ausführlichen Diskussion zur Notwendigkeit von Kreuzungsexperimenten in der taxonomisch-systematischen Forschung.
A world revision of the four entedonine (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae: Entedoninae) genera of larval parasitoids of thrips (Thysanoptera) is presented: Ceranisus Walker, 1841, Entedonomphale Girault, 1915 stat. rev. (reinstated as a valid taxon from previous synonymy under Ceranisus, with type species E. margiscutum Girault, 1915 stat. rev.), Goetheana Girault, 1920, and Thripobius Ferrière, 1938. The following new generic synonymies are proposed: Cryptomphale Girault, 1917, Entedonastichus Girault, 1920, Pirenoidea Girault, 1922, and Thripoctenoides Erdös, 1954 under Entedonomphale. The proposed new combinations are as follows: Entedonomphale bicolorata (Ishii, 1933), E. nubilipennis (Williams, 1916), and Thripobius javae (Girault, 1917) from Ceranisus; Entedonomphale carbonaria (Erdös, 1954), E. dei (Girault, 1922), E. kaulbarsi (Yoshimoto, 1981), and E. mira (Girault, 1920) from Entedonastichus. New synonymies are proposed for the following species: Ceranisus vinctus (Gahan, 1932) under Ceranisus menes (Walker, 1839), Diglyphus aculeo Walker, 1848 under Ceranisus pacuvius (Walker, 1838); Ceranisus maculatus (Waterston, 1930) and Thripobius semiluteus Boucek, 1976 under Thripobius javae (Girault, 1917); Entedonastichus albicoxis (Szelényi, 1982) under Entedonomphale carbonaria (Erdös, 1954), and Entedonastichus gaussi (Ferrière, 1958) under Entedonomphale bicolorata (Ishii, 1933). Eleven new species are described: Ceranisus barsoomensis and C. votetoda (Australia), C. udnamtak (Nepal); Entedonomphale boccaccioi (USA), E. esenini (Madagascar), E. lermontovi (South Africa), E. quasimodo and E. zakavyka (Australia); Goetheana pushkini (Japan and Republic of Korea) and G. rabelaisi (Australia); and Thripobius melikai (China). Three species are excluded from Ceranisus: C. ancylae (Girault, 1917) (mistakenly listed in Ceranisus) as well as C. nigricornis Motschulsky, 1863 and C. semitestaceus Motschulsky, 1863, both taxa incertae sedis. New data are provided on the distribution and host associations of many of the species included in this review.
A taxonomic review of the species belonging to Bembidion Latreille, 1802 of Australia includes a key and descriptions of the species. Noinenclatorial acts proposed in this paper include: 1, taxa of new Status - Bembidion subgenus Sloanephila Netolitzky, 1931, valid subgenus, not consubgeneric with subgenus Philochtus Stephens, 1828; B. (Notaphocampa) riverinae Sloane, 1894 valid species, not subspecies of B. opulentum Nietner, 1858; 2, new synonyms B. (Notaphominis Netolitzky, 1931) = B. (Notaphocampa Netolitzky, 1914): 3, New subgenera - Australoemphanes, and Gondwanabembidion, 4, New species - B. (Ananotaphus) daccordii (South Australia, Mound Springs); 5, new subspecies - B. (Zeactedium) orbiferum giachinoi (New ZeaIand, North Island); 6, species transferred to Australoemphanes - B . (Ananotaphus) blackburni Csiki, 1928; 7, Species transferred to Gondwanabembidion - B . (Ananotaphus) proprium Blackburn, 1888. Conclusions of an informal phylogeographic study are: 1, the Auslralian continent was probably populated by the Bembidiina with relatively recent (Late Tertiary-Quaternary) invasions from the north by tropical lineages, while other lineages showing systematic relationships with African and South American taxa probably have an older, Gondwanian origin; and 2, some lineagas of predominantly Nearctic and Palaearctic taxa were also Gondwanian in origin.
This review lists Agama smithii Boulenger 1896 as a synonym of Agama agama (Linnaeus 1758), Agama trachypleura Peters 1982 as a synonym of Acanthocercus phillipsii (Boulenger 1895) and describes for the first time Acanthocercus guentherpetersi n. sp. Without more convincing evidence, Chamaeleon ruspolii Boettger 1893 cannot be accepted as specifically distinct from Chamaeleo dilepis Leach 1819, nor Chamaeleo calcaricarens Böhme 1985 from C. africanus Laurenti 1768. Consequently, 101 species of lizard are currently recognised in Ethiopia, of which some 40% appear to be denizens of the Somali-arid zone. This significant proportion is attributable in part to the importance of the Horn of Africa as a centre for reptilian diversification and endemicity, in part to the fact that this lowland fauna was rather extensively sampled during the 1930s, but also to the conspicuous neglect of lizards in other regions of the country. Mountain and forested habitats are widespread in Ethiopia, so it seems extraordinary to record only five saurian species which are believed to be endemic in such environments. The inference that there are many more still to be discovered has important implications for conservation, because montane forest is known to be among the most threatened of Ethiopian biomes and there is clearly an urgent need for its herpetofauna to be more thoroughly researched and documented.
Drassodes lapidosus und Drassodes cupreus (Araneae: Gnaphosidae) - eine unendliche Geschichte

Drassodes lapidosus and Drassodes cupreus (Araneae: Gnaphosidae) – a never-ending discussion. According to PLATNICK (2006) the taxa Drassodes lapidosus (Walckenaer, 1802), the type species of the genus Drassodes (Westring, 1851), and Drassodes cupreus (Blackwall, 1834) are two valid species. However, GRIMM (1985) merged them into one taxon. Different taxonomists have separated these species by the positions of the teeth in the frontal margin of the chelicerae and by the proportions of the palpal segments in males. Females are separated by the proportions of different features in the epigyne. The altitude at which they occur is used for separation, too. The aim of this paper is to discuss whether these characteristics really allow the separation of these two taxa. In order to solve this taxonomical problem, 116 male and 108 female specimens from Central Europe were examined. The variation of the mentioned characters is shown. Spearman’s rho correlations and factor analyses are presented. The results show that there are transitions between the two taxa D. lapidosus and D. cupreus and, thus, they cannot be separated using the diagnostic features currently available.
Adult females of the five Central European wolf spiders Trochosa hispanica Simon, 1870, T. robusta (Simon, 1876), T. ruricola (De Geer, 1778), T. spinipalpis (F. O. P.-Cambridge, 1895), and T. terricola Thorell, 1856 were morphologically analysed. We defined sets of continuous and binary (presence/absence) variables. Continuous data of various epigynal and carapace dimensions were subjected to Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Using the PC loadings each individual was plotted along the PC axis in order to find gaps/overlaps between the species. The binary data sets were subjected to Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) in order to find characters that clearly separate the five Trochosa species. Using PCA only individuals of T. robusta and T. ruricola and of T. robusta and T. hispanica could be separated from each other. Using HCA all five species could clearly be separated by epigynal and vulval characteristics.
A new feature for the separation of Trochosa spinipalpis and T. terricola males (Araneae, Lycosidae)

A new feature on the tip of the palp, which enables the separation of male Trochosa spinipalpis (F. O. P.-Cambridge, 1895) from T. terricola Thorell, 1856, is described. T. terricola exhibits a hairless strip on the tip of the palp, while T. spinipalpis lacks this feature and has long hairs on the whole palp.
The taxonomy, diversity, and distribution of the aquatic insect order Trichoptera, caddisflies, are reviewed. The order is among the most important and diverse of all aquatic taxa. Larvae are vital participants in aquatic food webs and their presence and relative abundance are used in the biological assessment and monitoring of water quality. The species described by Linnaeus are listed. The morphology of all life history stages (adults, larvae, and pupae) is diagnosed and major features of the anatomy are illustrated. Major components of life history and biology are summarized. A discussion of phylogenetic studies within the order is presented, including higher classification of the suborders and superfamilies, based on recent literature. Synopses of each of 45 families are presented, including the taxonomic history of the family, a list of all known genera in each family, their general distribution and relative species diversity, and a short overview of family-level biological features. The order contains 600 genera, and approximately 13,000 species.
Lepidoptera phylogeny and systematics : the state of inventorying moth and butterfly diversity

The currently recognized robust support for the monophyly of the Lepidoptera (and the superorder Amphiesmenoptera comprising Lepidoptera + Trichoptera) is outlined, and the phylogeny of the principal lineages within the order is reviewed succinctly. The state of the taxonomic inventory of Lepidoptera is discussed separately for ‘micro-moths’, ‘macro-moths’ and butterflies, three assemblages on which work has followed historically somewhat different paths. While currently there are about 160,000 described species of Lepidoptera, the total number of extant species is estimated to be around half a million. On average, just over one thousand new species of Lepidoptera have been described annually in recent years. Allowing for the new synonyms simultaneously established, the net increase in species numbers still exceeds 800/year. Most of the additions are foreseeable in the micro-moth grade, but even for butterflies ca 100 species are added annually. Examples of particularly interesting new high-rank taxa that have been described (or whose significance has become realized) since the middle of the 20th century include the non-glossatan lineages represented by Agathiphaga and Heterobathmia and the heteroneuran families Andesianidae, Palaephatidae, Hedylidae and Micronoctuidae. Some thoughts on how present and future systematic lepidopterology might be prioritised are presented.
Schlüssel zur Bestiminung europäischer Boletales mit Röhren werden vorgestellt. Der Artenschlüssel ist großteils nir Bestimmung von Frischmaterial angelegt. Die Schlüssel zu den Familien und Gattungen sowie die Gattungsdiagnosen sind auf Europa bezogen und müßten in weltweiter Sicht noch erweitert werden. Im Schlüssel wurden einige in den letzten Jahren vorgcnoinmenen Neukombinationen und Synonymisierungen nicht übernommen. Für die nunmehr in Xerocomus integrierte Gattung Phylloporus wird die Schaffung einer Untergattung vorgeschlagen. Auch eine neue Sektion, eine neue Art und einige neue Kombinationen werden vorgeschlagen.
Glyptostrobus Endlicher is well represented in early Early Cretaceous to Pleistocene deposits in the middle to high latitudes of North America and Eurasia. Although the taxonomy and nomenclature of the genus is complicated, the fossil record indicates Glyptostrobus was represented by a small number of species. The genus first appears in Aptian age deposits from western Canada and Greenland, and achieved a wide distribution early in its evolutionary history. Exchange of Glyptostrobus between Asia and North America occurred across the Spitsbergen and Beringian corridors, which were functional about 110 and 100 million years ago, respectively The Late Cretaceous fossil record of Glyptostrobus shows that the genus had spread into Russia, China and the shores of the Turgai Strait. By the early Tertiary, Glyptostrobus was a prominent constituent of the polar broad-leaved deciduous forests. Paleocene age deposits across western Canada and the United States indicate the genus was present in great abundance in the lowland warm temperate and subtropical forests east of the Rocky Mountains. The broad distribution in North America and Russia during the Paleocene and Eocene indicates that Glyptostrobus grew and reproduced under a diverse range of climatic and environmental conditions, including the cold and unique lighting conditions of the polar latitudes. The presence of Glyptostrobus in Europe indicates the North Atlantic land bridges that extended between North America and Eurasia (Fennoscandia) and Europe during the early Tertiary were used. In Europe, extensive Glyptostrobus dominated swan1ps occupied the Central European Depression during the late Tertiary. Increasing global aridity and cooling, as well as landscape stabilization together with increasing competition for resources and habitat by representatives of the Pinaceae, seem to have forced the genus out of North America, Europe and most of Asia during the Miocene and Pliocene. In Japan, Glyptostrobus persisted until the early Pleistocene. After the early Pleistocene extinction in Japan, Glyptostrobus reappeared in southeastern China. Details of the taxonomic and biogeographic history of Glyptostrobus are examined.
Untangling some taxonomic riddles on damselfly genera (Zygoptera) from the neotropical region

Examination of type material deposited in the IRSNB (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels, Belgium) and in the BMNH (British Museum of Natural History, London, Great Britain) allowed us to solve taxonomic riddles regarding several damselfly (Zygoptera) genera from the neotropical region. We provide notes on the status of several types, and introduce the following new synonymies: Argia huallaga Fraser, 1946 = A. adamsi Calvert, 1902; Argia makoka Fraser, 1946 = A. kokama Fraser, 1946; Argia mollusca Fraser, 1946 = A. collata Selys, 1865; Argia trifoliata Fraser, 1946 = A. variegata Förster, 1914; Argia umbriaca Fraser, 1946 = A. indicatrix Calvert, 1902; Amphiagrion amphion Selys, 1876 = Ischnura verticalis (Say, 1840); a new combination: Oxyagrion cardinalis Fraser, 1946 to Leptobasis cardinalis (Fraser, 1946); and three lectotype designations (for Acanthagrion gracile race? lancea Selys, 1876, Acanthagrion trimaculatum Selys, 1876, and Leptagrion flammeum Selys, 1876).
The adult morphology of the recently established species Somatochlora borisi Marinov, 2001 is outlined. The species has a unique combination of features, especially when compared to representatives of the two closest European genera, Cordulia Leach, 1815 and Somatochlora Selys, 1871 but also compared to other Holarctic genera and species within the Corduliinae (sensu Garrison et al. 2006). The extent of these morphological differences suggests that the species can not be assigned to any of the extant genera, and therefore the new genus Corduliochlora is being established.
Es wird die Verschiedenheit der einzelnen Larvenstadien hervorgehoben, die in der Hypermetamorphose ihren Gipfel erreicht. Am Beispiel der Coleoptera wird der Stand der taxonomischen Kenntnisse erörtert und in seiner z.T. krassen Differenzierung erläutert. Es werden Möglichkeiten der Determination von Larven vorgestellt. Einige Ordnungen der Holometabola können auch durch apomorphe Merkmale der Larven als Monophyla wahrscheinlich gemacht werden, z. B. Neuroptera, Trichoptera und Siphonaptera, bei anderen gestatten dies die gegenwärtigen Kenntnisse nicht, z. B. Coleoptera und Hymenoptera. Auch die Monophylie subordinierter Taxa kann anhand von abgeleiteten Merkmalen der Larven dargestellt werden, wie am Beispiel der Familie Scirtidae (Coleoptera) erläutert wird. Es wird darauf hingewiesen, dass Inkongruenzen von Larval- und Imaginalsystemen wertvolle Hinweise auf Forschungsbedarf zur Auflösung paraphyletischer Gruppen liefern können. Die Bedeutung der Larven für die Taxonomie, Systematik und Phylogenetik ist sehr groß, und es wird eine verstärkte Aufmerksamkeit zur Erforschung der „Holomorphe“ im Sinne Hennigs angemahnt.
Taxonomic, systematic, and biogeography knowledge on the Palaearctic species of Pristaulacus Kieffer 1900 is summarized. Twenty-one valid species are recognized. The most important morphological characters taken into consideration are: shape, cuticular sculpture, and pubescence of head; index length/width of antennomeres; shape, sculpture and cuticular processes of mesosoma, especially of pronotum and mesonotum; number and shape of teeth on claw; shape and sculpture of metasoma; ovipositor length compared with wing and antenna length; and colour pattern (e.g., the dark spots on fore wing, and the colour of hind tarsus). Several characters of the genital capsule of the male were proved to be very useful for species identification, e.g., the shape of the paramere, volsella, cuspis, and digitus. Based on analysis of twenty-five morphological characters, eight species groups are recognized. The critical revision of the chorological data, including many new records, introduced relevant changes of the geographical distribution pattern of most species. Twelve species are restricted to the western part of the Palaearctic Region and eight species are restricted to its eastern part; only one species, P. gibbator, has a wider distribution, including both western and eastern parts of the Palaearctics.
Die Notwendigkeit des vorliegenden Beitrags zur Trichogramma-Fauna in Deutschland hat folgende Gründe: 1) Die Erfassung der Fauna dient der Kenntnis und der Erhaltung der genetischen und biologischen Vielfalt im Sinne der Konvention zur Biodiversität. 2) Die Gattung Trichogramma Westwood, 1833 (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) ist im biologischen Pflanzen- und Vorratsschutz weltweit von ökonomischem Nutzen. Das Spektrum möglicher Zielschädlinge umfasst in Deutschland mindestens 30 Schädlinge im Pflanzen- und Vorratsschutz (Zimmermann 2004). Als Eiparasitoide greifen sie bereits das Eistadium der Schädlinge an, was gegenüber allen anderen biologischen und chemischen Bekämpfungsmethoden ein entscheidender Vorteil ist. Trichogramma spp. werden in Mitteleuropa als einzige Nutzarthropoden großflächig im Freiland eingesetzt. Daher ist es von besonderer Bedeutung die natürlich auftretenden Arten und deren lokale Ökotypen zu charakterisieren, zu schützen und gegebenenfalls für die biologische Schädlingsbekämpfung zu nutzen. Nicht zuletzt im Hinblick auf eine zu erwartende Registrierungspflicht für Nützlinge in Deutschland ist es ein grundlegender Beitrag, die Wissenslücken hinsichtlich der einheimischen Trichogramma-Fauna aufzuzeigen.
The huntsman spider genera Sparianthina Banks, 1929 and Anaptomecus Simon, 1903 are reviewed. The type species of Sparianthina, Sparianthina selenopoides Banks, 1929, is redescribed, illustrated, and recorded from Costa Rica for the first time; a lectotype and paralectotype are designated. Three species are transferred to the genus: Sparianthina pumilla (Keyserling, 1880) comb. n. from Heteropoda Latreille, 1804 (lectotype and paralectotype are designated), Sparianthina rufescens (Mello-Leitão, 1940) comb. n. from Anaptomecus and Sparianthina milleri (Caporiacco, 1955) comb. n. from Macrinus Simon, 1887. The ♂ of S. rufescens (Mello-Leitão, 1940) comb. n. and the ♀ of S. milleri comb. n. are described for the first time. Three new species are described: Sparianthina adisi sp. n., S. deltshevi sp. n., and S. saaristoi sp. n. The male and female of Anaptomecus longiventris Simon, 1903 are described for the first time and the species is recorded from Panama for the first time. Comparison of the detailed species-specific original drawings of Microneta pusilla Menge, 1869 with the holotype of Hypsocephalus dahli (Lessert, 1909) and the record of one female close to the type locality of Microneta pusilla in Gdansk, Poland indicate that Hypsocephalus dahli is a junior synonym of Microneta pusilla. Hypsocephalus pusillus (Menge, 1869) is therefore proposed as the valid name for this species. Here we discuss the taxonomic status of both species and present a distribution map that accounts for records in Poland.
Thirteen species of skippers (six newly described; Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae: Hesperiinae: Hesperiini) from higher elevations of Mexico and Central America are reviewed. These are included in four genera (one newly described), some with proposed new combinations. Onespa Steinhauser, 1974, originally described as monotypic, is shown to include three species in addition to its type species, Onespa nubis Steinhauser, 1974. One of these, Atrytone gala Godman, 1900, that has been misplaced in several genera since its description, represents a new combination. The other two species, distributed in montane habitats in northwestern Mexico and in Costa Rica, are described as new. Buzyges Godman, 1900, distributed in Mexico and Central America and also formerly considered monotypic, is shown to embrace four species. Besides the type species, Buzyges idothea Godman, 1900, two species long placed in Poanes Scudder, 1872, Pamphila rolla Mabille, 1883, and Poanes benito Freeman, 1979, are included as new combinations. Another species, known only from Costa Rica, is described as new. These are united by several superficial characters, but especially by genital morphology of both sexes. Librita Evans, 1955, was described to include three species of which one, Librita raspa Evans, 1955, was subsequently removed. Augiades heras Godman, 1900 is here also removed from Librita and placed in a new genus with three previously undescribed species. This completes the disintegration of Librita, which is now monotypic. The four genera, although exhibiting similarities suggesting potential alliance, differ in their unique combinations of several superficial and genital traits from each other and other hesperiine skippers.
Five new species of the genus Cotycicuiara Galileo and Martins are described and illustrated: C. oicepe sp. nov., from Trinidad and Tobago; and from Brazil C. multicava sp. nov., (Minas Gerais); C. pertusa sp. nov., (Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina); C. nivaria sp. nov., (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo); C. chionea sp. nov., (Rio de Janeiro). A revised key to species is provided.
Homophileurus neptunus Dechambre was found to be conspecific with H. waldenfelsi Endrödi after examination of types, descriptions, and illustrations. Accordingly, H. neptunus is placed in junior synonymy with H. waldenfelsi, new synonymy. Homophileurus waldenfelsi is an uncommon species and occurs in Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, and Peru. Brazil and Peru are new country records.
A glance at the Odonata of the Cambodian coastal mountainous regions : end of dry season in 2010

During a visit to the coastal regions of Cambodia within the Provinces of Koh Kong, Kampong Saom, Kampot and Kep within April 12-23, 2010, 59 species of Odonata were found. Of these, 51 were identified, 2 preliminarily identified (1 by exuviae, 1 to a known species with the valid name unresolved), 1 dubious (Aciagrion cf. pallidum), 3 not identified (just visual observations) and 2 seemingly undescribed, namely Burmagomphus sp. and Microgomphus sp. Fourteen species were recorded for the first time for this country, namely Neurobasis chinensis, Dysphaea gloriosa, Euphaea masoni, Onychargia atrocyana, Copera marginipes, Copera vittata, Prodasineura autumnalis Prodasineura verticalis sensu Asahina, 1983, Lathrecista asiatica, Orthetrum chrysis, Rhyothemis obsolescens, Tramea transmarina euryale, Zygonyx iris malayana, Zyxomma petiolatum; taking the current checklist for Cambodia up to 83 species. Some features of the collected specimens relevant to their taxonomy are discussed. Brief field notes are provided and Odonata records enumerated. The habitats and community of Odonata at the Cardamon Mts. foothills at the end of dry season are discussed.
Based on the results of fieldwork and collecting in 2008 and 2009 and the evaluation of literature an updated national checklist of the Odonata of Kyrgyzstan is presented. The list comprises a total of 63 species, whereas 55 species were encountered in the field by the author, including five new for the country: Aeshna serrata, Onychogomphus lefebvrii, Orthetrum sabina, Crocothemis servilia, Selysiothemis nigra. 826 specimens of 49 species have been collected (dep. in coll. A. Schröter). All 55 species recorded in 2008 and 2009 are listed and annotated. Moreover, the unclear or controversial taxonomical status of several species is briefly debated. Interesting ecological observations include the emergence of Libellula quadrimaculata from running water and cleptoparasitism by Ischnura forcipata in spider webs.
Based on newly collected samples and data from the literature, an updated list of the marine bivalves of the Cape Verde Islands is presented. From 2004 to 2006, collections were made at 22 sampling points in the islands of Santiago, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Boavista and Maio. Using qualitative and direct sampling methods, 39 species of bivalves, belonging to 20 families, were identified. Families most represented were Veneridae (6 species), Cardiidae (5 species), Arcidae (4 species) and Mytilidae (4 species). Islands with the largest diversity of species were São Vicente (30 species) and Santiago (23 species), probably due to the larger number of sample points (64% of total). Six species not previously reported from the archipelago were collected, i.e. Irus irus, Venus declivis, Timoclea ovata, Diplodonta rotundata, Plagiocardium papillosum and Tagelus adansoni. Corbicula fluminea, supposedly a man assisted introduction, was also collected.
Three families in the superfamily Calopterygoidea occur in China, viz. the Calopterygidae, Chlorocyphidae and Euphaeidae. They include numerous species that are distributed widely across South China, mainly in streams and upland running waters at moderate altitudes. To date, our knowledge of Chinese species has remained inadequate: the taxonomy of some genera is unresolved and no attempt has been made to map the distribution of the various species and genera. This project is therefore aimed at providing taxonomic (including on larval morphology), biological, and distributional information on the superfamily in South China.
The pseudoscorpions Chthonius (Chthonius) carinthiacus Beier, 1951 and Chthonius (Ephippiochthonius) tuberculatus Hadži, 1937, are recorded for the first time from Slovakia. An illustrated description of these species is provided based on their morphological and morphometric characters. The descriptions of the species offer an update on the variability of their morphological and morphometric characters.
Chthonius (Chthonius) hungaricus Mahnert, 1980 and Larca lata (Hansen, 1884) were recorded for the first time from Slovakia. The finding of C. hungaricus in Slovakia is the second known record since its description and the finding of L. lata is the first record of the family of Larcidae in Slovakia. The descriptions of the species offer an update on the variability of morphologic and morphometric characters. Indications about the habitats of C. hungaricus are also given for the first time.
Trogulus banaticus Avram, 1971 is characterised and recorded as new for Slovenia. This species was previously mistaken for T. coriziformis C. L. Koch, 1839 and T. graecus Dahl, 1903 which were later rejected from the Slovenian fauna. T. banaticus is compared with the similar, and partly sympatric, T. tingiformis C. L. Koch, 1847 with which it has often been confused. A table of distinguishing characters for both species is provided, and the ecology of T. banaticus and its general distribution are discussed.
Results of the odonatological survey of the coastal SW regions of Cambodia on November 28 - December 11, 2001, are presented, including field notes, enumeration of all records by locality, discussion of interesting specimens and their taxonomy and of seasonality aspects. Fifteen (14 named) species have been added to the known fauna of Cambodia: Aristocypha fenestrella (Rambur, 1842), Rhinagrion viridatum Fraser, 1938, Lestes elatus Hagen in Selys, 1862, L. platystylus Rambur, 1842, Aciagrion tillyardi Laidlaw, 1919, Agriocnemis f. femina (Brauer, 1868), Archibasis viola Lieftinck, Ceriagrion calamineum Laidlaw, 1951, Mortonagrion aborense (Laidlaw, 1914), M. falcatum Lieftinck, 1934, Pseudagrion microcephalum (Rambur, 1842), 1948, Paragomphus capricornis (Förster, 1914), Hemicordulia undescr. spec., Macrodiplax cora (Brauer, 1867), Nannophya pygmaea Rambur, 1842, plus a provisionally identified Ceriagrion indochinense Asahina, 1976. The country list now achieves 106 named species (not counting Prodasineura verticalis sensu Asahina, 1983, C. indochinense and Hemicordulia sp.). Coeliccia megumii Asahina, 1984 is synonymised with C. kazukoae Asahina, 1984. The differences between Ceriagrion olivaceum Laidlaw, 1914 and C. calamineum Lieftinck, 1951 are discussed.
Three different male and female super-specific types are distinguished according to variations in the morphology of the bulb and spermathecae within the genus Nemesia Audouin, 1826. Plotting the distributions of these sexual types on a map of the Mediterranean indicates the existence of geography-related sub-generic diversity in which the Nemesia fauna of the eastern Mediterranean differs markedly from that of the western Mediterranean. While the eastern Mediterranean Nemesia fauna is highly homogeneous, the fauna of the western Mediterranean is very diverse. The eastern and western Nemesia faunae appear to overlap in the central Mediterranean. Efforts to relate the specific bulb types to the particular types of spermathecae described here were only partly successful.
The genus Candobrasilopsis gen. nov. is here described, with C. rochai gen. nov. sp. nov. as type species, from the alluvial valley of the Upper Paraná River. The enigmatic Candonopsis brasiliensis Sars, 1901 is here redescribed and transferred to this new genus, the new combination being Candobrasilopsis brasiliensis (Sars, 1901). The new candonid genus belongs to the tribe Candonopsini, because of the absence of the proximal seta on the caudal ramus. It is closely related to Latinopsis Karanovic & Datry, 2009, because of the relatively short terminal segment of the mandibular palp (length less than 1.5 times the basal width, while this segment is longer than three times the basal width in Candonopsis) and the large and stout b-seta on the T1. However, it differs markedly from Latinopsis in the size and shape of the calcified inner lamellae of both valves and in the type of hemipenis. We also discuss the doubtful allocation of several other genera to the Candonopsini, raise Abcandonopsis Karanovic, 2004 to generic status and reassess the uncertain position of Candonopsis anisitsi Daday, 1905 within Latinopsis.

Of 87 named Odonata species encountered during the trip, 15 are reported for the first time for Cambodia, namely Aciagrion hisopa (Selys, 1876), Anax immaculifrons Rambur, 1842, Burmagomphus divaricatus Lieftinck, 1964, Gomphidictinus perakensis (Laidlaw, 1902), Merogomphus parvus (Kruger, 1899), Nepogomphus walli (Fraser, 1924), Idionyx thailandica Hamalainen, 1985, Macromia cupricincta Fraser, 1024, Macromia septima Martin, 1904, Macromidia rapida Martin, 1907, Agrionoptera insignis (Rambur, 1842), Lyriothemis elegantissima Selys, 1883, Onychothemis testacea Laidlaw, 1902, Orthetrum luzonicum (Brauer, 1868), Orthetrum testaceum (Burmeister, 1839). The country list now reaches 125 named species.
A revision of the known African species of Psammoecus is given, including redescriptions and illustrations of diagnostic characters. Extensive material from the Musée royal de l’Afrique centrale (Tervuren) is studied. Two new species are described: Psammoecus leleupi sp. nov., and Ps. luchti sp. nov. Four specific names are synonymized: Psammoecus excellens Grouvelle, 1908 = Ps. trimaculatus Motschulsky, 1858; Ps. alluaudi Grouvelle, 1912 = Ps. trimaculatus Motschulsky, 1858; Ps. longulus Grouvelle, 1878 = Ps. longicornis Schaufuss, 1872; Ps. nitescens Grouvelle, 1914 = Ps. laetulus Grouvelle, 1914. A key to the African species is provided.
We describe the frog species Diasporus citrinobapheussp. n. from the Cordillera Central of western Panama. The new species differs from all other species in its genus in coloration, disk cover and disk pad shape, skin texture, advertisement call, and size. It is most similar to Diasporus tigrillo, from which it differs in dorsal skin texture, relative tibia length, number of vomerine teeth, ventral coloration, dorsal markings, and relative tympanum size, and to Diasporus gularis, from which it can be distinguished by the lack of membranes between the toes, adult size, posterior thigh coloration, and position of the choanae. We provide data on morpho- logy, vocalization, and distribution of the new species, as well as brief information on its natural history.
No Name, No Game

In an interesting contribution Joppa et al. (2011) revisit some aspects of the taxonomic impediment (Evenhuis 2007; http://www.cbd.int/gti/) and come to the conclusion that, contrary to the generally accepted idea, both the rates of species description and the number of taxonomists have increased exponentially since the 1950’s. Joppa et al. (2011) also note a marked decline in the number of species described per taxonomist which they attribute to the difficulty of finding new species in an ever declining ‘missing species pool’. Therefore, their results might be interpreted that today’s taxonomic workforce is sufficient to describe the remaining (shallow) ‘pool of missing species’. In this contribution, we question if this is indeed the case and propose a solution for speeding up taxonomic descriptions.
The lichen-forming genus Pertusaria under its current circumscription is polyphyletic and its phylogenetic affiliations are uncertain. Here we study the species of the genera Pertusaria and Varicellaria which containlecanoric acid as major constituent, have disciform apothecia, strongly amyloid asci, non-amyloid hymenial gel, 1-2-spored asci, and 1- or 2-celled ascospores with thick, 1-layered walls. We infer phylogenetic relationships using maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses based on four molecular loci (mtSSU, nuLSU rDNA, and the protein-coding, nuclear RPB1 and MCM7 genes). Our results show that the lecanoric acid-containing species form a well-supported, monophyletic group, which is only distantly related to Pertusaria s.str. The phylogenetic position of this clade is unclear, but placement in Pertusaria s.str. is rejected using alternative hypothesis testing. The circumscription of the genus Varicellaria is enlarged to also include species with non-septate ascospores. Seven species are accepted in the genus: Varicellaria culbersonii (Vězda) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria hemisphaerica (Flörke) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria kasandjeffii (Szatala) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria lactea (L.) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria philippina (Vain.) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria rhodocarpa (Körb.) Th. Fr., and Varicellaria velata (Turner) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov. A key to the species of Varicellaria is provided.
The South African endemic bee genus Redivivoides Michener, 1981 is revised and redefined. The genus comprises seven species, six of which are described here as new: Redivivoides capensis sp. nov. ♀♂, R. eardleyi sp. nov. ♀, R. kamieskroonensis sp. nov. ♀, R. karooensis sp. nov. ♀♂, R. namaquaensis sp. nov. ♀♂ and R. variabilis sp. nov. ♀♂.
