Let me start with a reminiscence: a few weeks ago, I was sitting in one of my preferred cafés in Paris, le Café Odéon- Théâtre de l’Europe, a vivid place near the Jardin de Luxembourg in the heart of the university quarter. I realised that the waiter was wearing a shirt with the letters "Defend Paris", which he explained to be a statement against the forces that make Paris an uneasy place to live, a defiance against the powerful and social injustice. With a mixture of rebellion and idealism, he added that he understands himself as part of a "Reclaim Your City" Movement, thus representing what is central for urban citizenship today: a republican defence against forces that make a metropolitan city a trademark to be sold to people who can afford it, but increasingly less a home for ordinary people who want to live in the city. Walking through the streets, passing a small jewelry shop, a place of distinguished understatement showing a picture of Meghan Markle wearing "rose"-earrings displayed in the window, the term "zombie urbanism" came to my mind – a term used by Jonny Aspen, professor at the Institute of Urbanism and Landscape in Oslo (See Bjerkeset and Aspen (forthcoming 2020) and here), to describe a cliché-like way of dealing with urban environment by developers and designers – a "staged urbanism", in which urban features are used as a means for selling, marketing and branding. This kind of city-marketing can prove quite successful: whereas the burning of Notre Dame mobilised hundreds of millions of donations within a short period of time, the burning of the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro soon after, extinguishing 200 years of documentation of cultural memory, mobilised only 225.000 Euros (state 1.4.2019). ...
"You don’t mind my calling you Harry?" : Terms of address in John Updike’s "Rabbit" tetralogy

This paper examines the use of address terms in John Updike’s Rabbit tetralogy (Updike 1995). The first part of the analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the great variety of terms used to address the protagonist, Harry Angstrom, in the decades covered by the novels. The second part focuses on two important side characters, Reverend Eccles and Harry’s mother-in-law. It demonstrates how address term usage with these two characters reflects ongoing changes in their relationship with Harry. The main aim of the paper is to demonstrate the potential of fictional data for the study of address terms and, in return, to capture the manifold functions of address terms as a literary device in fiction.
Refugee reception in Germany is a primarily municipal task that relies heavily on neighborhood-based volunteering. This paper asserts that there are fundamental spatial mismatches between municipal policies and neighborhood-based approaches that place additional burden on all of the stakeholders involved. Drawing from the case of Frankfurt-Rödelheim, which is a socially and ethnically mixed neighborhood in Frankfurt am Main, I show how the way the municipality accommodates refugees disregards the politically embraced work of neighborhood-based volunteers and how the ideal of neighborhood-based inclusion creates a spatial fetish that fails the living reality of the refugees. The findings are based on my ethnographic fieldwork as volunteer in a neighborhood-based welcome initiative.
Die in den 1990er Jahren erneuerte sozialwissenschaftliche Debatte um Staatsbürgerschaft (citizenship) als ein Verhältnis von Nation, Staat und Individuum, das über rein rechtliche Arrangements hinausgeht und auch Fragen der politischen und kulturellen Zugehörigkeit im weiteren Sinn betrifft, hat seit fünf bis zehn Jahren auch die Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften erreicht, mit eigenen Schwerpunktsetzungen und Konzepten. Eines dieser Konzepte, das des sexual citizenship, ist das Thema der kulturwissenschaftlichen Magisterarbeit "We Will Be Citizens: The Notion of Citizenship in Tony Kushner's Angels in America and Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart". Kramer's The Normal Heart (1985) und Kuschner's Angels in America (1993/95) werden als Beispiele für Theaterstücke der 'ersten' und 'zweiten' Generation, die sich mit der AIDS-Krise der 1980er Jahre auseinandersetzen analysiert; dabei, so das zentrale Argument, geht es in beiden Stücken darum, die Auseinandersetzung mit AIDS und die formulierte Kritik an der unzureichenden Reaktion der Reagan-Administration auf die AIDS-Krise im Kontext von Neuverhandlungen von sexual citizenship zu lesen, also als Neuverhandlung der Rechte und gesellschaftlichen Teilhabemöglichkeit für als von der 'sexuellen Norm abweichend' definierte Personengruppen, im Kontext der Stücke vor allem homosexuelle Männer. Dabei wird citizenship klar als ein kulturelles Konzept definiert und macht dadurch auch die Bedeutung kultureller Produktionen (z.B. Literatur) für die Debatten deutlich: "Citizenship is not only to be understood as a political issue, but also as socially and materially constructed and culturally coded. If we understand culture as the ways of doing things and of organizing society, then the negotiations of citizenship take place, among other ways, through culture" (5). Die Diskussion des Themas beginnt mit einer zielgerichteten Skizze der theoretischen Debatten um sexual citizenship, der Rolle von AIDS für diese Debatten (Kap. 2) und einer Übersicht über die AIDS-Krise der 1980er Jahre (Kap. 3). Dabei stellt er mit Sontag, Yingling und Isin die Konstruktionen von Alterität – krank/gesund, self/other, citizen/non-citizen – die die Diskussion prägen, in den Vordergrund der Analyse. In den beiden folgenden Kapitel (4 und 5) werden die beiden Stücke mit Blick auf die jeweilige Aushandlung von sexual citizenship diskutiert; für Kramers Stück wird dabei das Thema schwule Identität, eine auf Aktivismus hin ausgerichtete Agenda und das Plädoyer für gesellschaftliche Anerkennung hervorgestellt, während bei der Analyse von Kuschners Text dessen Inszenierung von 'Geschichte' und ideologischer Kritik im Vordergrund steht. Den Abschluss bildet ein Vergleich der beiden Stücke in Hinsicht auf ihre jeweilige Agenda und deren Umsetzung. The Normal Heart, verfolgt insgesamt eine eher assimilatorische Sto߬richtung, die versucht, Homosexualität zu 'norm(alis)ieren', während Angels, radikaler, die Konstruktionen von sexuellen Normen hinterfragt und ein Recht auf Differenz proklamiert (z.B. S. 69).

After he had only tightly lost the election in July 2006, Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his Coalición claimed fraud and asserted that unfair conditions during the campaign had diminished his chances to win the presidency. The paper investigates this latter allegation centering on a perceived campaign of hate, unequal access to campaign resources and malicious treatment by the mass media. It further analyzes the mass media’s performance during the conflictual post electoral period until the final decision of the Federal Electoral Tribunal on September 5th, 2006. While the media’s performance during the campaign tells us about their compliance with fair media coverage mechanisms that have been implemented by electoral reforms in the 1990s, the mass media is uncontained by such measures after the election. Thus, their mode of coverage of the postelectoral conflicts allows us to “test” the mass media’s transformation to a more unbiased, social responsible “fourth estate”. Finally the paper scrutinizes whether the claims of fraud and the protests by the leftist movement resulted in lower levels of institutional trust and democratic support. The analysis of the media performance is based on data provided by the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE). Its Media Monitor encompassed more than 150 TV stations, 240 radio stations and 200 press publications. However, there is no comparable data available for the postelectoral period. Interviews with Mexican media experts, which the author has conducted during the postelectoral period, serve as empirical basis for the second part. Data on the public opinions and attitudes of Mexican citizens are taken from the 2007 Latinobarometro, the 2006 Encuesta Nacional and several polls conducted by Grupo Reforma. The results do not support López Obradors notions. Even though a strong party bias is characteristic of the Mexican media system, all findings hint at a continuity of balanced campaign coverage and fair access to mass media publicity. Coverage during the postelectoral period was more polarized, yet both sides remained at least partially open for oppositional views. The claims of fraud, mass protest mobilization and anti-institutional discourse by Lopez Obrador’s leftist movement seem not to have caused significant loss in institutional trust, support of and satisfaction with democracy, even though these levels remain quite low.
