1. During the last century, the practice of fur farming in Europe led to the introduction of two mammal species from opposite ends of the world. With their subsequent unintentional escape from captivity or intentional releases, the process of slow expansion and establishment in Europe began. The raccoon Procyon lotor and the raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides are included on the European Union’s list of invasive alien species.
2. We characterised the current climatic niches of the two species in their native ranges in North America and Asia, and compared them with their non-native-range niches in Europe, where we also projected climatic suitability. The aim was to locate suitable habitats beyond their current ranges and assess where a range expansion can be expected.
3. Niche comparison and the projection of climatic suitability in Europe were based on eight bioclimatic variables and presence records from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility database. For niche modelling, we applied the maximum entropy approach (Maxent) and used the native-range data for training.
4. Minimum temperature of the coldest month (bio06) was identified as the most important bioclimatic variable in the habitat suitability models for both species. Different tolerance levels regarding this variable might explain small differences between the species’ projected ranges, especially in the north and east of Europe. The high niche unfilling for both species in Europe suggests a potential for expansion beyond their present ranges.
5. With only little understanding of their ecological impacts in their new ranges, including the potential risk of Nyctereutes procyonoides as SARS-CoV-2 reservoir hosts, further research and management is required at various spatial scales in Europe.
Muránska planina Mts, a small karstic area situated in the southern part of the Western Carpathians in Central Slovakia was chosen as a model region for the study of the variability and diversity patterns of thermophilous and mountain non-forest vegetation on the crossing of the Carpathian and Pannonian bioregions. Altogether, 113 new relevés were sampled using standard methods of the Zürich-Montpellier approach and compared with previously published data. The dataset containing both new and published phytosociological relevés from dry, semi-dry and mesic grasslands (265 relevés) was analysed using the program JUICE 7.0.98. The Beta flexible method, relative Sorensen distance as a similarity measure, and logarithmic transformation of species covers were used for the numerical classification (PC-ORD). The main environmental gradients of species composition were analysed by DCA in the CANOCO 4.5 package using the Borhidi indicator values. The various mosaics of plant communities were detected in succession series from pioneer rocky stands through open rocky grasslands dominated by Festuca pallens, F. tatrae, Carex humilis and Sesleria albicans to closed tall grass communities dominated by Calamagrostis varia and C. arundinacea. Plant communities belonging to six classes (Sedo-Scleranthetea, Festuco-Brometea, Elyno-Seslerietea, Thlaspietea rotundifolii, Mulgedio-Aconitetea and Molinio-Arrhenatheretea) including Pannonian grasslands of the alliance Bromo pannonici-Festucion pallentis and high montane/subalpine grasslands of the alliance Astero alpini-Seslerion calcariae occur together in the study area. High floristic richness and extraordinary diffusion of thermophilous and montane/subalpine elements is characteristic for the majority of the studied plant communities.
nichtvoroperierten Patienten ohne CED erzielen.
Background: Curcuminoids (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bis-demethoxycurcumin) are lipophilic polyphenols thought to be effective in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, of which mitochondrial dysfunction is a prominent feature. In particular, older people may thus benefit from increasing their curcuminoid intake. However until now, it is not investigated if there exist age differences in the bioavailability of curcuminoids and therefore, it is unclear if curcumin doses have to be adjusted to age. Thus, we explored if the tissue concentrations and biological activities of curcuminoids are affected by age.
Methods: We investigated age-differences in the bioavailability and tissue distribution of curcuminoids and mitochondrial function in 3- and 18-months old mice fed a control diet or identical diets fortified with 500 or 2000 mg curcuminoids/kg for 3 weeks. Therefore, we measured curcuminoid concentrations in plasma, liver, kidney, and brain, basal and stress-induced levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) in dissociated brain cells and citrate synthase activity of isolated mitochondria.
Results: Plasma but not liver and kidney curcuminoid concentrations were significantly higher in older mice. Age did not affect ATP concentrations and MMP in dissociated brain cells. After damaging cells with nitrosative stress, dissociated brain cells from old mice had a higher MMP than cells from young animals and were therefore more resistant. Furthermore, this effect was enhanced by curcumin.
Conclusion: Our data suggest that age may affect plasma concentrations, but not the tissue distribution of curcuminoids in mice, but has little impact on mitochondrial function in brain cells.
Application of a developed tool to visualize newly synthesized AMPA receptor components in situ
(2018)
The information flow between neurons happens at contact points, the synapses. One underlying mechanism of learning and memory is the change in the strength of information flow in selected synapses. In order to match the huge demand in membranes and proteins to build and maintain the neurites' complex architecture, neurons use decentralized protein synthesis. Many candidate proteins for local synthesis are known, and the need of de novo synthesis for memory formation is well established. The underlying mechanisms of how somatic versus dendritic synthesis is regulated are yet to be elucidated. Which proteins are newly synthesized in order to allow learning?
In this thesis protein synthesis is studied in hippocampal neurons. The fractional distribution of somatic and dendritic synthesis for candidate proteins and their subsequent transport to their destination are investigated using a newly developed technique. In the first part of this study we describe the development of this technique and use it in the second part to answer biological questions.
We focus here on AMPA receptor subunits, the key players in fast excitatory transmission. AMPA receptors contain multiple subunits with diverse functions. It remains to be understood, when and where in a neuron these subunits come together to form a protein complex and how the choice of subunits is regulated.
The investigation of the subunits' site of synthesis and redistribution kinetics in this study will help us to understand how neurons are able to change their synaptic strength in an input specific manner which eventually allows learning and memory.
Key questions which are addressed in this study:
How can specific newly synthesized endogenous proteins be visualized in situ? What are the neuron's abilities to locally synthesize and fully assemble AMPA receptor complexes?
How fast do different AMPA receptor subunits redistribute within neurons after synthesis?
