Angophora inopina is a vulnerable tree species occurring principally in Wyong and Lake Macquarie local government areas on the Central Coast, with disjunct populations as far north as Bulahdelah on the North Coast of NSW. The largest and most intact stands occur within the Wyee-Morisset areas although even here significant fragmentation is evident. North of Toronto, there are small and scattered residual populations as far as Barnsley near West Wallsend in Lake Macquarie. A total area of occupied habitat of approximately 1500 ha is estimated.
Cluster analysis of floristic information showed that Angophora inopina occurs within three broad habitat types within the Central Coast bioregion, centred mainly on the Gorokan, Doyalson and Wyong soil landscapes. Hybrid forms of the species also occur on the Cockle Creek landscape in northern Lake Macquarie. Most stands are evident within open woodland/ forest vegetation where Eucalyptus haemastoma, Corymbia gummifera, and Eucalyptus capitellata dominate with Angophora inopina. Other populations occur in wet heath, and swamp woodland environments where sedge species are characteristic.
Conservation of Angophora inopina will be most effectively and efficiently achieved if ecological processes that operate across the landscape are maintained. Processes such as fragmentation, altered fire regimes or invasion of habitat by exotic species must be managed in the long-term. These are all significant threats to this species, and will best be effectively managed in the larger remnants in a landscape approach. Such threats are generally associated with urban and agricultural expansion in the area, and these are therefore the most pressing issues to be managed.
Dislocation without movement

This paper argues that French Left-Dislocation is a unified phenomenon whether it is resumed by a clitic or a non-clitic element. The syntactic component is shown to play a minimal role in its derivation: all that is required is that the dislocated element be merged by adjunction to a Discourse Projection (generally a finite TP with root properties). No agreement or checking of a topic feature is necessary, hence no syntactic movement of any sort need be postulated. The so-called resumptive element is argued to be a full-fledged pronoun rather than a true syntactic resumptive.
In this paper we review the current state of research on the issue of discourse structure (DS) / information structure (IS) interface. This field has received a lot of attention from discourse semanticists and pragmatists, and has made substantial progress in recent years. In this paper we summarize the relevant studies. In addition, we look at the issue of DS/ISinteraction at a different level—that of phonetics. It is known that both information structure and discourse structure can be realized prosodically, but the issue of phonetic interaction between the prosodic devices they employ has hardly ever been discussed in this context. We think that a proper consideration of this aspect of DS/IS-interaction would enrich our understanding of the phenomenon, and hence we formulate some related research-programmatic positions.
This article analyses the German discourse particle wohl 'I suppose', 'presumably' as a syntactic and semantic modifier of the sentence types declarative and interrogative. It is shown that wohl does not contribute to the propositional, i.e. descriptive content of an utterance. Nor does it trigger an implicature. The proposed analysis captures the semantic behaviour of wohl by assuming that it moves to SpecForceP at LF, from where it can modify the sentence type operators in Force0 in compositional fashion. Semantically, a modification with wohl results in a weaker commitment to the proposition expressed in declaratives and in a request for a weaker commitment concerning the questioned proposition in interrogatives. Cross-linguistic evidence for a left-peripheral position of wohl (at LF) comes from languages in which the counterpart of wohl occurs in the clausal periphery overtly. Overall, the analysis sheds more light on the semantic properties of the left periphery, in particular of the functional projection ForceP.
Speakers have a wide range of noncanonical syntactic options that allow them to mark the information status of the various elements within a proposition. The correlation between a construction and constraints on information status, however, is not arbitrary; there are broad, consistent, and predictive generalizations that can be made about the information-packaging functions served by preposing, postposing, and argument-reversing constructions. Specifically, preposed constituents are constrained to represent discourse-old information, postposed constituents are constrained to represent information that is either discourse-new or hearer-new, and argument-reversing constructions require that the information represented by the preposed constituent be at least as familiar as that represented by the postposed constituent (Birner & Ward 1998). The status of inferable information (Clark 1977; Prince 1981), however, is problematic; a study of corpus data shows that such information can be preposed in an inversion or a preposing (hence must be discourse-old), yet can also be postposed in constructions requiring hearer-new information (hence must be hearer-new). This information status – discourse-old yet hearer-new – is assumed by Prince (1992) to be non-occurring on the grounds that what has been evoked in the discourse should be known to the hearer. I resolve this difficulty by arguing for a reinterpretation of the term 'discourse-old' as applying not only to information that has been explicitly evoked in the prior discourse, but rather to any information that provides a salient inferential link to the prior discourse. Extending Prince’s notion in this manner allows us to account for the distribution of noncanonically positioned peripheral constituents in a principled and unified way.
The aim of this paper is to investigate Rizzi's (2001) recent claim that in combien constructions full movement correlates with a specific or D-linking interpretation of the nominal (see also Obenauer, 1994) while the in-situ option corresponds to focus of the noun. On the one hand, it is argued that the notion of specificity or D-linking for the raised nominal is too strong while on the other hand it is shown that the stranded nominal is not a focus, but a topic, albeit of a special kind. It is also argued that there is a dedicated postverbal position for this kind of topic and that the nominal has all the properties of an incorporated nominal: it is interpreted as an asserted background topic. In the final part of the article, some time is spent discussing the pragmatics and the modality involved in discontinous structures, and showing that the stranded nominal is interpreted inside the VP/below the event variable.
This dissertation study argues that 'policy advice formation', as a discourse development, is a differentiated hybrid resultant from merger between comparative education and policy studies disciplines. Through discourse analysis based on John Creswell's format, this study identifies revisions, restatements and shifts in emphasis of theories, methodological models and challenge topics of comparative education and policy studies. Findings which display the development of policy advice formation' discourse. In conclusion, this study found differential patterns seemingly formed because of collaborative affects of standardization in education science knowledge expressed within discourse.
German dialects vary in which of the possible orders of the verbs in a 3-verb cluster they allow. In a still ongoing empirical investigation that I am undertaking together with Tanja Schmid, University of Stuttgart (Schmid and Vogel (2004)) we already found that each of the six logically possible permutations of the 3-verb cluster in (1) can be found in German dialects.
Dialectal variation in german 3-verb clusters : a surface-oriented optimality theoretic account

We present data from an empirical investigation on the dialectal variation in the syntax of German 3-verb clusters, consisting of a temporal auxiliary, a modal verb, and a predicative verb. The ordering possibilities vary greatly among the dialects. Some of the orders that we found occur only under particular stress assignments. We assume that these orders fulfil an information structural purpose and that the reordering processes are changes only in the linear order of the elements which is represented exclusively at the surface syntactic level, PF (Phonetic Form). Our Optimality theoretic account offers a multifactorial perspective on the phenomenon.
Determination of the structure of complex I of Yarrowia lipolytica by single particle analysis

Komplex I enthält ein Flavinmononukleotid sowie mindestens acht Eisen- Schwefel Zentren als redoxaktive Cofaktoren. Da ein wesentlicher Teil des mitochondrialen Genoms für Untereinheiten von Komplex I codiert, betrifft eine Vielzahl von mitochondrialen Erkrankungen diesen Enzymkomplex.
Komplex I wurde bisher aus Mitochondrien, Chloroplasten und Bakterien isoliert. Die Minimalform von Komplex I wird in Bakterien gefunden, wo er aus 14 (bzw 13 im Falle einer Genfusion) Untereinheiten besteht und eine Masse von etwa 550 kDa aufweist. Generell werden sieben hydrophile und sieben hydrophobe Untereinheiten mit über 50 vorhergesagten Transmembranhelices gefunden. Im Komplex I aus Eukaryoten wurde eine grössere Anzahl zusätzlicher, akzessorischer Untereinheiten nachgewiesen. Hier werden die sieben hydrophoben Untereinheiten vom mitochondrialen Genom codiert, während alle anderen Untereinheiten kerncodiert sind und in das Mitochondrium importiert werden müssen.
Die obligat aerobe Hefe Yarrowia lipolytica wurde als Modellsystem zur Untersuchung von eukaryotischem Komplex I etabliert. Die bisher am besten untersuchte Hefe Saccharomyces cerevisiae enthält keinen Komplex I. Hier wird die Oxidation von NADH durch eine andere Klasse von sogenannten alternativen NADH Dehydrogenasen durchgeführt. Auch Y. lipolytica enthält ein solches alternatives Enzym, das allerdings mit seiner Substratbindungsstelle zur Aussenseite der inneren Mitochondrienmembran orientiert ist. Durch molekularbiologische Manipulation konnte eine interne Version dieses Enzymes exprimiert werden, wodurch es möglich ist, letale Defekte in Komplex I Deletionsmutanten zu kompensieren. Mittlerweile wurden alle Voraussetzungen geschaffen, um kerncodierte Untereinheiten von Komplex I aus Y. lipolytica gezielt genetisch zu verändern. This paper examines substantive noun phrases in Niuean, a Polynesian language of the Tongic subgroup with VSO word order, isolating morphology, and an ergative case system. We describe the allowable orderings of elements in the Niuean noun phrase, which include certain variations in the placement of numerals and the genitive possessor, then we provide a phrasal movement analysis for these variations, treating first the possessor variation, then the numeral variation. Parallels will be drawn between the derivation of nominal and sentential word order.
The large conductance voltage- and Ca2+-activated potassium (BK) channel has been suggested to play an important role in the signal transduction process of cochlear inner hair cells. BK channels have been shown to be composed of the pore-forming alpha-subunit coexpressed with the auxiliary beta-1-subunit. Analyzing the hearing function and cochlear phenotype of BK channel alpha-(BKalpha–/–) and beta-1-subunit (BKbeta-1–/–) knockout mice, we demonstrate normal hearing function and cochlear structure of BKbeta-1–/– mice. During the first 4 postnatal weeks also, BKalpha–/– mice most surprisingly did not show any obvious hearing deficits. High-frequency hearing loss developed in BKalpha–/– mice only from ca. 8 weeks postnatally onward and was accompanied by a lack of distortion product otoacoustic emissions, suggesting outer hair cell (OHC) dysfunction. Hearing loss was linked to a loss of the KCNQ4 potassium channel in membranes of OHCs in the basal and midbasal cochlear turn, preceding hair cell degeneration and leading to a similar phenotype as elicited by pharmacologic blockade of KCNQ4 channels. Although the actual link between BK gene deletion, loss of KCNQ4 in OHCs, and OHC degeneration requires further investigation, data already suggest human BK-coding slo1 gene mutation as a susceptibility factor for progressive deafness, similar to KCNQ4 potassium channel mutations. © 2004, The National Academy of Sciences. The argument that I tried to elaborate on in this paper is that the conceptual problem behind the traditional competence/performance distinction does not go away, even if we abandon its original Chomskyan formulation. It returns as the question about the relation between the model of the grammar and the results of empirical investigations – the question of empirical verification The theoretical concept of markedness is argued to be an ideal correlate of gradience. Optimality Theory, being based on markedness, is a promising framework for the task of bridging the gap between model and empirical world. However, this task not only requires a model of grammar, but also a theory of the methods that are chosen in empirical investigations and how their results are interpreted, and a theory of how to derive predictions for these particular empirical investigations from the model. Stochastic Optimality Theory is one possible formulation of a proposal that derives empirical predictions from an OT model. However, I hope to have shown that it is not enough to take frequency distributions and relative acceptabilities at face value, and simply construe some Stochastic OT model that fits the facts. These facts first of all need to be interpreted, and those factors that the grammar has to account for must be sorted out from those about which grammar should have nothing to say. This task, to my mind, is more complicated than the picture that a simplistic application of (not only) Stochastic OT might draw.
A very general saddle point nuclear shape may be found as a solution of an integro-differential equation without giving apriori any shape parametrization. By introducing phenomenological shell corrections one obtains minima of deformation energy for binary fission of parent nuclei at a finite (non-zero) mass asymmetry. Results are presented for reflection asymmetric saddle point shapes of thorium and uranium even-mass isotopes with A=226-238 and A=230-238 respectively.
Data driven automatic model selection and parameter adaptation – a case study for septic shock

In bioinformatics, biochemical pathways can be modeled by many differential equations. It is still an open problem how to fit the huge amount of parameters of the equations to the available data. Here, the approach of systematically learning the parameters is necessary. This paper propose as model selection criterion the least complex description of the observed data by the model, the minimum description length. For the small, but important example of inflammation modeling the performance of the approach is evaluated.
This paper investigates the nature of the attraction of XPs to clauseinitial position in German (and other languages). It argues that there are two different types of preposing. First, an XP can move when it is attracted by an EPP-like feature of Comp. Comp can, however, also attract elements that bear the formal marker of some semantic or pragmatic (information theoretic) function. This second type of movement is driven by the attraction of a formal property of the moved element. It has often been misanalysed as “operator” movement in the past.
In the present study the cryo-immunogold technique was used and optimized for investigating the ultrastructure and immunolabeling of synaptic proteins. It is evidently a suitable method for the localization of membrane proteins since the antigens are not treated with any chemical denaturation before immunolabeling except for the fixation and since the antigens are directly exposed to the surface of the cryo-ultrasections. The v-SNARE VAMP II and the vesicle-associated proteins SV2 and Rab3A were detected extensively at small vesicles in the mossy fiber terminals. The t-SNARE SNAP-25, and N-type and P/Q type Ca2+ channels were allocated to the plasma membrane both at the active zone and outside the active zone. SNAP-25 and N-type Ca2+ channels appeared also at synaptic vesicles. A significantly increased immunolabeling of VAMP II, SV2, Rab3A, SNAP-25 and N-type Ca2+ channels was found at the active zones of fast synapses, indicating a concentration of these proteins at sites of exocytosis. The widespread distribution of the t-SNARE SNAP-25 at the axonal plasma membrane reveals that membrane-targeting specificity cannot be determined solely by v/t-SNARE interactions. Additional control components are required to assure the docking and exocytosis of the synaptic vesicles at active zones. The novel protein Bassoon was only found at active zones of central synapses and showed the highest specific labeling among all proteins investigated. Its labeling pattern implies an association of Bassoon with the presynaptic dense projections, the structural guide for vesicle exocytosis. The involvement of Bassoon in the organization of the neurotransmitter release site suggests that Bassoon may play an important role in determining the specificity of vesicle docking and fusion. In the neurosecretory endings of neurohypophysis the synaptic proteins VAMP II, SNAP- 25, SV2, Rab3A, and the N-type Ca2+ channels showed a preferential labeling over microvesicles. Moreover, the immunolabeling intensity of these proteins over microvesicles corresponded closely to that over synaptic vesicles. This suggests that these synaptic proteins share an identical association with synaptic vesicle and microvesicles. A significant labeling of SNAP-25, the N-type Ca2+ channels and VAMP II was also detected at the plasma membrane near the clustered microvesicles, indicating the competence of microvesicles for docking and exocytosis along the plasma membrane in the absence of active zones. No significant labeling of VAMP II, SNAP-25, SV2 and N-type Ca2+ channel was observed at the membrane of neurosecretory granules. This is in agreement with the notion that synaptic vesicles and microvesicles possess regulatory mechanisms for exocytosis different from those of granules. In contrast, a/ß-SNAP and NSF were found on the granules, and Rab3A and the P/Q-type Ca2+ channels on granules in a subset of terminals. Rab3A is associated specifically with the oxytocin-containing granule population. Interestingly, some plasma membrane proteins, such as SNAP-25 and even N-type Ca2+ channels and P/Q-type Ca2+ channels, were observed not only at the plasma membrane but also at the vesicular organelles. This suggests that these vesicular organelles may be involved in transporting newly synthesized proteins from the soma to the plasma membrane of the terminal. Furthermore, the vesicular pool of the Ca2+ channels may serve in the stimulationinduced translocation into the plasma membrane when required. Using the conventional preembedding method with Epon and the post-embedding method with LR Gold, VAMP II was localized at vesicular organelles of varying size and on horseradish peroxidase filled endocytic organelles in cultured astrocytes, with and without stimulation in the presence of the horseradish peroxidase. This indicates that VAMP II is involved in the cycle of vesicular exocytosis and endocytosis in astrocytes. U373 cells are capable of expressing all three members of the synaptic SNARE complex (v-SNARE VAMP II, t-SNARE syntaxin I and SNAP25). This indicates the competence of U373 to carry out regulated exocytosis by means of the classical SNARE mechanism. In addition, the ubiquitous v-SNARE cellubrevin and the endosome-associated small GTPbinding protein Rab5 could be expressed in U373 cells. All recombinant synaptic proteins investigated in U373 cells revealed a punctuate cellular distribution under the fluorescence microscope, suggesting that they are mainly associated with intracellular compartments. The cryo-electron microscopy provided direct evidence for the association of all expressed proteins with electron-lucent vesicular organelles. It further supports the potential of U373 MG cells to release low molecular weight messengers by a regulated exocytosis mechanism. In addition, myc-VAMP II was found on dispersed granules. Probably, VAMP II also participates in the exocytosis event of granules in U373 cells. Gold labeling for the two presumptive t-SNAREs syntaxin I and SNAP-25 in U373 cells was confined to the vesicular organelles. At the ultrastructural level no significant labeling was identified at the plasma membrane. The high level of colocalization of the two SNARE proteins VAMP II and syntaxin I in the cell body and in cell processes suggests that the two proteins are mostly sorted into identical vesicular organelles. A partial colocalization of VAMP II and cellubrevin as well as of VAMP II and Rab5 was observed under the fluorescence microscope. At the ultrastructural level, a colocalization of VAMP II and cellubrevin as well as of VAMP II and Rab5 was found on some clustered vesicles. The partial colocalization of VAMP II and cellubrevin implies that they similarly function as v-SNAREs. The partial colocalization of Rab5 with VAMP II in U373 cells suggests that the endosomal protein Rab5 is associated with VAMP II-containing organelles during some stages of their life cycle.
Measurements of the production of forward high-energy pi 0 mesons from transversely polarized proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV are reported. The cross section is generally consistent with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The analyzing power is small at xF below about 0.3, and becomes positive and large at higher xF, similar to the trend in data at sqrt[s] <= 20 GeV. The analyzing power is in qualitative agreement with perturbative QCD model expectations. This is the first significant spin result seen for particles produced with pT>1 GeV/c at a polarized proton collider.
Criminology in Africa

Criminology in Africa has been produced with contributions from leading African authors who have focussed on the various problems facing Africa today regarding crime and criminal justice, and they have, at the same time, put forward their ideas and suggestions for coming to terms with these massive problems.
Epigraphic documents attest that the two neighbouring, inland sites, Idalion and Tamassos, were kingdoms during the Cypro-Archaic period, and that-within an interval of nearly a century - they were both incorporated by the kingdom of Kition during the Cypro-Classical period, thereby losing their independent status. The geographical position of Idalion and Tamassos must have been both a blessing and a curse: while the two polities could thrive on the exploitation of the nearby copper mines, they also had to withstand the economic interest of other Cypriote polities in these natural resources. In addition, we may assume that, because of their inland position, Idalion and Tamassos were forced to seek economic collaboration with polities that had direct access to the sea for the export and exchange of commodities beyond the island. We may further expect that the control of ore-mining and forestry activities must have been a potential source of territorial strife between the two inland kingdoms. Therefore, the geo-economic reality likely induced Idalion and Tamassos to a dualistic relationship of being both allies and competitors. ...
Course management software : supporting the university’s teaching with technology initiatives

An increasingly important element of the teaching with technology activities at Northwestern University is the course management system, a web-based class communication and administration environment. The usage growth of the system is substantial and amplifies the need for integration with other web services and resources. Integration is particularly material in area of library services. This presentation contains a case study of Northwestern University's implementation of its course management system software and highlights examples of how the system is being used to enhance the teaching and learning. A description of the integration efforts with library resources is provided. The goal of the presentation is to equip librarians with the basic knowledge required to engage with their colleagues in conversations surrounding the nature of integration of these systems within the teaching and learning landscapes of their home institutions.
This paper reports the results of a corpus investigation on case conflicts in German argument free relative constructions. We investigate how corpus frequencies reflect the relative markedness of free relative and correlative constructions, the relative markedness of different case conflict configurations, and the relative markedness of different conflict resolution strategies. Section 1 introduces the conception of markedness as used in Optimality Theory. Section 2 introduces the facts about German free relative clauses, and section 3 presents the results of the corpus study. By and large, markedness and frequency go hand in hand. However, configurations at the highest end of the markedness scale rarely show up in corpus data, and for the configuration at the lowest end we found an unexpected outcome: the more marked structure is preferred.
The aim of this paper is the exploration of an optimality theoretic architecture for syntax that is guided by the concept of "correspondence": syntax is understood as the mechanism of "translating" underlying representations into a surface form. In minimalism, this surface form is called "Phonological Form" (PF). Both semantic and abstract syntactic information are reflected by the surface form. The empirical domain where this architecture is tested are minimal link effects, especially in the case of "wh"-movement. The OT constraints require the surface form to reflect the underlying semantic and syntactic representations as maximally as possible. The means by which underlying relations and properties are encoded are precedence, adjacency, surface morphology and prosodic structure. Information that is not encoded in one of these ways remains unexpressed, and gets lost unless it is recoverable via the context. Different kinds of information are often expressed by the same means. The resulting conflicts are resolved by the relative ranking of the relevant correspondence constraints.
The paper explores factors that influence the design of financing contracts between venture capital investors and European venture capital funds. 122 Private Placement Memoranda and 46 Partnership Agreements are investigated in respect to the use of covenant restrictions and compensation schemes. The analysis focuses on the impact of two key factors: the reputation of VC-funds and changes in the overall demand for venture capital services. We find that established funds are more severely restricted by contractual covenants. This contradicts the conventional wisdom which assumes that established market participants care more about their reputation, have less incentive to behave opportunistically and therefore need less covenant restrictions. We also find that managers of established funds are more often obliged to invest own capital alongside with investors money. We interpret this as evidence that established funds have actually less reason to care about their reputation as compared to young funds. One reason for this surprising result could be that managers of established VC funds are older and closer to retirement and therefore put less weight on the effects of their actions on future business opportunities. We also explore the effects of venture capital supply on contract design. Gompers and Lerner (1996) show that VC-funds in the US are able to reduce the number of restrictive covenants in years with high supply of venture capital and interpret this as a result of increased bargaining power by VC-funds. We do not find similar evidence for Europe. Instead, we find that VC-funds receive less base compensation and higher performance related compensation in years with strong capital inflows into the VC industry. This may be interpreted as a signal of overconfidence: Strong investor demand seems to coincide with overoptimistic expectations by fund managers which make them willing to accept higher powered incentive schemes. The flora of the Lord Howe Island Group (31°30’S, 159°05’E) comprises a unique mix of elements of Australian, New Zealand and New Caledonian floras. It is significant for its high degree of endemism and for its structural and biological (leaves, flowers, fruit) role in supporting a diverse array of fauna. Conservation of this flora is dependant upon: reducing current habitat degradation (mostly the result of exotic weeds); minimising any future impacts, in particular the effects of climate change on the unique cloud forests of the southern mountains and the continued introduction and spread of weeds and the pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi.
We provide a description of the nature of the major threats to the flora and suggest an area-based scheme, focussed on the relative conservation significance of remaining vegetation, as a mechanism for developing priorities for threat mitigation activities. While a number of threat control works are in place, eg. weed control, some re-emphasis is needed. In addition, some new initiatives are required including: reducing the rate of introductions of new exotics; a system to remove potential environmental weeds from the settlement area; phytosanitary guidelines; pathogen quarantine measures; search and removal of environmental weeds from remote areas; and ex situ initiatives for plant species restricted to the cloud forests of the southern mountains.
In what follows, we will first put forward the claim that syntactic ergativity results from morphological ergativity by examining relativization and pea-coordination in Tongan (Section 2). In Sections 3 and 4, we compare 'O-constructions with pea-constructions to conclude a) that unlike pea, 'O should be regarded as a complementizer rather than a conjunction; and b) that the gap in 'O-clauses is not an outcome of deletion, but a null anaphor. We will then discuss a Minimalist approach to binding proposed by Reuland (2001) and see how it accounts for the distribution and behavior of proSE in Tongan. Some implications of the current proposal are discussed in Section 6, with section 7 in conclusion.
Let G be a Fuchsian group containing two torsion free subgroups defining isomorphic Riemann surfaces. Then these surface subgroups K and alpha-Kalpha exp(-1) are conjugate in PSl(2,R), but in general the conjugating element alpha cannot be taken in G or a finite index Fuchsian extension of G. We will show that in the case of a normal inclusion in a triangle group G these alpha can be chosen in some triangle group extending G. It turns out that the method leading to this result allows also to answer the question how many different regular dessins of the same type can exist on a given quasiplatonic Riemann surface.
Chicheŵa, a Bantu language of East Central Africa, displays mixed properties of configurationality such as the existence of VP, on the one hand, and discontinuous constituents (DCs), on the other. In the present work we examine the discourse and syntactic properties of DCs, and show that DCs in Chicheŵa arise naturally from the discourse-configurational nature of the language. We argue that the fronted DCs in Chicheŵa are contrastive topics that appear in a leftdislocated external topic position, with the remnant part of the split NP in the right-dislocated topic position. Once the precise discourse functions of DCs are properly integrated into the syntactic analysis, all the facts and restrictions observed in Chicheŵa DCs can be explained in a straightforward fashion.
Configuration, simulation and visualization of simple biochemical reaction-diffusion systems in 3D

Background In biological systems, molecules of different species diffuse within the reaction compartments and interact with each other, ultimately giving rise to such complex structures like living cells. In order to investigate the formation of subcellular structures and patterns (e.g. signal transduction) or spatial effects in metabolic processes, it would be helpful to use simulations of such reaction-diffusion systems. Pattern formation has been extensively studied in two dimensions. However, the extension to three-dimensional reaction-diffusion systems poses some challenges to the visualization of the processes being simulated. Scope of the Thesis The aim of this thesis is the specification and development of algorithms and methods for the three-dimensional configuration, simulation and visualization of biochemical reaction-diffusion systems consisting of a small number of molecules and reactions. After an initial review of existing literature about 2D/3D reaction-diffusion systems, a 3D simulation algorithm (PDE solver), based on an existing 2D-simulation algorithm for reaction-diffusion systems written by Prof. Herbert Sauro, has to be developed. In a succeeding step, this algorithm has to be optimized for high performance. A prototypic 3D configuration tool for the initial state of the system has to be developed. This basic tool should enable the user to define and store the location of molecules, membranes and channels within the reaction space of user-defined size. A suitable data structure has to be defined for the representation of the reaction space. The main focus of this thesis is the specification and prototypic implementation of a suitable reaction space visualization component for the display of the simulation results. In particular, the possibility of 3D visualization during course of the simulation has to be investigated. During the development phase, the quality and usability of the visualizations has to be evaluated in user tests. The simulation, configuration and visualization prototypes should be compliant with the Systems Biology Workbench to ensure compatibility with software from other authors. The thesis is carried out in close cooperation with Prof. Herbert Sauro at the Keck Graduate Institute, Claremont, CA, USA. Due to this international cooperation the thesis will be written in English.
Open source projects produce goods or standards that do not allow for the appropriation of private returns by those who contribute to their production. In this paper we analyze why programmers will nevertheless invest their time and effort to code open source software. We argue that the particular way in which open source projects are managed and especially how contributions are attributed to individual agents, allows the best programmers to create a signal that more mediocre programmers cannot achieve. Through setting themselves apart they can turn this signal into monetary rewards that correspond to their superior capabilities. With this incentive they will forgo the immediate rewards they could earn in software companies producing proprietary software by restricting the access to the source code of their product. Whenever institutional arrangements are in place that enable the acquisition of such a signal and the subsequent substitution into monetary rewards, the contribution to open source projects and the resulting public good is a feasible outcome that can be explained by standard economic theory.
Complex fission phenomena

Complex fission phenomena are studied in a unified way. Very general reflection asymmetrical equilibrium (saddle point) nuclear shapes are obtained by solving an integro-differential equation without being necessary to specify a certain parametrization. The mass asymmetry in binary cold fission of Th and U isotopes is explained as the result of adding a phenomenological shell correction to the liquid drop model deformation energy. Applications to binary, ternary, and quaternary fission are outlined.
The filling of the 'Vorfeld' in German sentences is basically obligatory; which constituent, however, actually moves to the Vorfeld is underdetermined by syntax and thus governed presumably by discourse factors. Coming from English, there are certain competing expectations one could have: either the topic — more specifically, the backward-looking center — of a sentence is moved to the Vorfeld, or an element in a poset relationship to a set mentioned in the previous discourse, or elements with other functions, such as the exposition of brand-new information or the setting of a scene. A study of a corpus of texts of different stylistic levels showed that indeed all elements expected to appear in the Vorfeld are eligible for Vorfeld-movement, but that there is a strict ranking. Preferred Vorfeld-fillers are phrases containing brand-new information as well as scene-setting elements; only if no such elements are present can elements in a poset relationship with some previously mentioned set be moved to the Vorfeld. Finally, if such elements are not present either, backward-looking centers can move to the Vorfeld. Backward-looking centers have, for this reason, a relatively poor quota among Vorfeld-fillers, namely around 50%.
Research on dialectal varieties was for a long time concentrated on phonetic aspects of language. While there was a lot of work done on segmental aspects, suprasegmentals remained unexploited until the last few years, despite the fact that prosody was remarked as a salient aspect of dialectal variants by linguists and by naive speakers. Actual research on dialectal prosody in the German speaking area often deals with discourse analytic methods, correlating intonations curves with communicative functions (P. Auer et al. 2000, P. Gilles & R. Schrambke 2000, R. Kehrein & S. Rabanus 2001). The project I present here has another focus. It looks at general prosodic aspects, abstracted from actual situations. These global structures are modelled and integrated in a speech synthesis system. Today, mostly intonation is being investigated. However, rhythm, the temporal organisation of speech, is not a core of actual research on prosody. But there is evidence that temporal organisation is one of the main structuring elements of speech (B. Zellner 1998, B. Zellner Keller 2002). Following this approach developed for speech synthesis, I will present the modelling of the timing of two Swiss German dialects (Bernese and Zurich dialect) that are considered quite different on the prosodic level. These models are part of the project on the "development of basic knowledge for research on Swiss German prosody by means of speech synthesis modelling" founded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Sensilla styloconica are elongated microscopically conspicuous chemo-mechano receptors found exclusively at the tongue tip of many adult Lepidoptera. These unique proboscis sensilla were comparatively studied using the scanning electron microscope in 107 species of North American and tropical butterflies. Focus was on 76 species of North American Nymphalidae representing 45 genera and 11 subfamily groups, and 15 species of tropical Nymphalidae representing additional genera and subfamilies. Observations of adult nymphalid feeding behaviour and food preference for correlation with morphological characteristics were made largely in North America and substantially in the Neotropics, where bait traps were used in conjunction with aerial netting. The tongue tips of 16 additional species representing 5 more butterfly families were also examined for the presence and morphological characteristics of sensilla styloconica.
The adaptive response of Sorghum bicolor landraces from Egypt to drought stress and following recovery was analyzed using two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis, 2D-DIGE. Physiological measurements and proteome alterations of accession number 11434, drought tolerant, and accession number 11431, drought sensitive, were compared to their relative control values after drought stress and following recovery. Differentially expressed proteins were analysed by Matrix assisted laser desorption ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry, MALDI-TOF-MS. Alterations in protein contents related to the energy balance, metabolism (sensu Mewes et al. 1997), and chaperons were the most apparent features to elucidate the differences between the drought tolerant and sensitive accessions. Further alterations in the levels of proteins related to transcription and protein synthesis are discussed.
I analysed the importance of shell size, shell shape, habitat preferences and availability, experienced climate, active dispersal and influence of Pleistocene glaciations for the range sizes of 37 Western Palaearctic Helicidae s.l. species for which a phylogeny was available. In both cross-species and phylogenetically controlled analyses, the range sizes were positively correlated to climatic tolerance, shell size, active dispersal and influence of Pleistocene glaciations. In addition, range sizes increased significantly with latitude. Multiple regression suggested that, predominantly, the influence of Pleistocene glaciations, tolerance to large annual temperature ranges and shell size influenced the distributional range sizes. Habitat preference, range and availability, active dispersal and shell shape explained no additional variance. The results suggest that the processes influencing species range size of the Helicidae s.l. are mainly related to the climatic shifts after the Pleistocene.
A remarkable indictment and conviction following the sale of an ‘obscene’ comic book invites us to examine arguments brought forth to describe a specifically childlike reception of new media, as usually suggested by those who would motivate legal restrictions for such media. Trying to explain some perceived contradictions on the surface of these arguments, we discuss whether it is the failure or rather the extreme success of texts that is marked as ‘dangerous’ in such contexts.
A critical discussion of the present status of the CERN experiments on charm dynamics and hadron collective flow is given. We emphasize the importance of the flow excitation function from 1 to 50 A·GeV: here the hydrodynamic model has predicted the collapse of the v1-flow and of the v2-flow at 10 A·GeV; at 40 A·GeV it has been recently observed by the NA49 collaboration. Since hadronic rescattering models predict much larger flow than observed at this energy we interpret this observation as potential evidence for a first order phase transition at high baryon density B. A detailed discussion of the collective flow as a barometer for the equation of state (EoS) of hot dense matter at RHIC follows. Here, hadronic rescattering models can explain < 30% of the observed elliptic flow, v2, for pT > 2 GeV/c. This is interpreted as evidence for the production of superdense matter at RHIC with initial pressure far above hadronic pressure, p > 1 GeV/fm3. We suggest that the fluctuations in the flow, v1 and v2, should be measured in future since ideal hydrodynamics predicts that they are larger than 50 % due to initial state fluctuations. Furthermore, the QGP coe cient of viscosity may be determined experimentally from the fluctuations observed. The connection of v2 to jet suppression is examined. It is proven experimentally that the collective flow is not faked by minijet fragmentation. Additionally, detailed transport studies show that the awayside jet suppression can only partially (< 50%) be due to hadronic rescattering. We, finally, propose upgrades and second generation experiments at RHIC which inspect the first order phase transition in the fragmentation region, i.e. at µB 400 MeV (y 4 5), where the collapse of the proton flow should be seen in analogy to the 40 A·GeV data. The study of Jet-Wake-riding potentials and Bow shocks caused by jets in the QGP formed at RHIC can give further information on the equation of state (EoS) and transport coe cients of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP).
We present a new self-contained and rigorous proof of the smoothness of invariant fiber bundles for dynamic equations on measure chains or time scales. Here, an invariant fiber bundle is the generalization of an invariant manifold to the nonautonomous case. Our main result generalizes the “Hadamard-Perron theorem” to the time-dependent, infinite-dimensional, noninvertible, and parameter-dependent case, where the linear part is not necessarily hyperbolic with variable growth rates. As a key feature, our proof works without using complicated technical tools.
Das westphälische Modell für Staatsinstitutionen, einschließlich nationaler Exekutive, Legislative und Judikative, hat sich aus den Ereignissen europäischer Geschichte heraus entwickelt. Seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges dient es als grundlegendes Paradigma für Internationale Interventionen zum Wiederaufbau von gescheiterten - oder zum Aufbau von neuen - Staaten. Für die internationale Gemeinschaft fungiert das westphälische Modell als Maß zur Beurteilung ihrer Interventionen, wie zum Beispiel in Somalia, Kambodscha oder den Balkanstaaten. In den meisten Fällen gilt eine durch sie beaufsichtigte oder gar durchgeführte ‚freie und faire’ Wahl als hauptsächliche Massnahme zur Bildung eines ‚westphälischen’ und demokratischen Staates. Die Erfolgsrate solcher internationalen Friedenseinsätze und ‚state-building operations’ ist jedoch enttäuschend. Bei näherer Betrachtung der Misserfolge des letzten Jahrzehnts wird deutlich, daß sich die lokalen Gesellschaftssysteme der betroffenen Bevölkerungen oft beträchtlich von liberaler Demokratie unterscheiden. Dies ist insbesondere der Fall in Gesellschaften deren Ordnung nicht auf Staatsinstiutionen basiert. Ihnen liegen sozio-politische Systeme zugrunde die sich oft mit dem Paradigma des westlichen Staatssystems nur schwer vereinen lassen. Um im Rahmen internationaler Friedenseinsätze erfolgreich Staatstrukturen zu etablieren, ist es daher notwendig lokale Sozialstrukturen und lokale Konzepte politischer Legitimität und Autorität zu addressieren. Erst mit solchem Verständnis ist es möglich einen Staatsapparat in den Augen der Bevölkerung zu legitimieren. Ist Letzteres nicht der Fall, so kann sich eine Regierung zwar in Übereinstimmung mit internationalen Menschenrechten befinden, oder alle wichtigen demokratischen Einrichtungen vorweisen, jedoch dennoch dem Prinzip der Partizipation durch die Bevölkerung widersprechen. Ist dies das Endresultat eines internationalen Friedenseinsatzes, so hat die internationale Gemeinschaft ihre eigenen Werte bestaetigt. Jedoch herrscht kein Vertrauen zwischen der Bevölkerung und Regierung, da letztere nicht kompatibel mit dem Versaendnis der Bürger ist. Der ‚demokratische’ Staat ist nur schwerlich funktionsfähig.Der internationale Einsatz in Osttimor illustriert dieses Problem. Hier wurden die Vereinten Nationen (VN) mit dem Wiederaufbau und der Verwaltung eines Staates betraut (UNTAET ‚Übergangsregierung der Vereinten Nationen in Osttimor’). Tumor-specific T lymphocytes can be regarded as a highly effective mechanism for tumor rejection. A substantial number of T-cell defined tumor antigens including mutated oncoproteins and differentiation antigens have been identified. However, while most spontaneous tumors appear to be antigenic, few are immunogenic. Activation of tumor-specific cytotoxic T cells (CTL) requires presentation of tumor antigens by professional antigen presenting cells (APCs) via MHC I molecules. Due to their crucial role in T-cell activation, APCs are being exploited for active cancer immunotherapy. Present experimental strategies include the incubation of dendritic cells with synthetic, tumor specific peptides to achieve uptake of tumor antigens and presentation in the context of MHC molecules. Alternatively, gene therapeutic approaches are aimed at the endogenous expression of tumor antigens in APCs upon transfer of suitable vector constructs. Our strategy for the presentation of tumor antigens by APCs is based on the intracellular delivery of tumor antigens as part of a fusion protein specifically targeted to APC cell surface receptors. We have constructed prototype molecules that contain a soluble fragment of CTLA-4 for cell binding via interaction with B7 molecules, genetically fused to a protein fragment derived from the tumor-associated antigen ErbB2. To improve uptake and direct the antigenic determinant preferentially to the MHC class I pathway, in one of these protein vaccines also the translocation domain of the bacterial Pseudomonas exotoxin A has been included. In the parental toxin this protein domain facilitates escape from the endosomal compartment to the cytosol upon receptor mediated endocytosis. Here we have investigated the in vitro cell binding activity of such reagents and their antitumoral activity in immunocompetent murine model systems. Specific binding to B7 molecules and uptake of bacterially expressed protein vaccines could be demonstrated. Ex vivo restimulation with an ErbB2-derived peptide of splenocytes from Balb/c mice injected with the fusion proteins resulted in enhanced IFN-gamma production by T cells. Protective and therapeutic effects of ErbB2 protein vaccines were also investigated. Vaccinated animals were protected against subsequent challenge with syngeneic ErbB2 expressing tumor cells. Likewise, s.c. injection of ErbB2 protein vaccines in the vicinity of established tumors resulted in tumor rejection and long lasting protection indicating that immunological memory was induced. Our results suggest that chimeric proteins combining a tumor antigen and specific recognition of APCs in a single molecule are suitable for targeted delivery of antigens to professional APCs and might become valuable tools for cancer immunotherapy.
We present a detailed study of chemical freeze-out in nucleus-nucleus collisions at beam energies of 11.6, 30, 40, 80 and 158A GeV. By analyzing hadronic multiplicities within the statistical hadronization approach, we have studied the strangeness production as a function of centre of mass energy and of the parameters of the source. We have tested and compared different versions of the statistical model, with special emphasis on possible explanations of the observed strangeness hadronic phase space under-saturation. We show that, in this energy range, the use of hadron yields at midrapidity instead of in full phase space artificially enhances strangeness production and could lead to incorrect conclusions as far as the occurrence of full chemical equilibrium is concerned. In addition to the basic model with an extra strange quark non-equilibrium parameter, we have tested three more schemes: a two-component model superimposing hadrons coming out of single nucleon-nucleon interactions to those emerging from large fireballs at equilibrium, a model with local strangeness neutrality and a model with strange and light quark non-equilibrium parameters. The behaviour of the source parameters as a function of colliding system and collision energy is studied. The description of strangeness production entails a non-monotonic energy dependence of strangeness saturation parameter gamma_S with a maximum around 30A GeV. We also present predictions of the production rates of still unmeasured hadrons including the newly discovered Theta^+(1540) pentaquark baryon.
A scenario of heavy resonances, called massive Hagedorn states, is proposed which exhibits a fast (t H 1 fm/c) chemical equilibration of (strange) baryons and anti-baryons at the QCD critical temperature Tc. For relativistic heavy ion collisions this scenario predicts that hadronization is followed by a brief expansion phase during which the equilibration rate is higher than the expansion rate, so that baryons and antibaryons reach chemical equilibrium before chemical freeze-out occurs. The detailed mechanism of the 20 S proteasome from Thermoplasma acidophilum is unknown. Substrates are degraded processively to small fragments without the release of intermediates, but the basis for this unique degradation mode remains obscure. The proteasome is a molecular machine, but how the different nanocompartments interplay and whether more than one substrate can be treated simultaneously has not been elucidated yet. To address these questions we had to disable the functionality of one aperture in order to dissect whether the other pore can compensate for the loss. As it is challenging to introduce mutations solely around one pore aperture of the highly symmetrical construct, we chose a novel approach by unique orientation of the proteasome at interfaces. For this purpose we purified recombinant 20 S proteasomes, where hexahistidine tags were fused either around the entrances or at the sides. According to electron microscopic studies we immobilized these constructs uniformly either end-on or side-on at metal-chelating interfaces (lipid vesicles, lipid monolayers and self-assembled thiol monolayers). Degradation of small fluorogenic peptides and large proteins like casein was analyzed. Small substrates were degraded with comparable activity by free and immobilized proteasomes, irrespective of their orientation. Thus it can be assumed that peptides can pass the sealed entrance of the 'dead-end' proteasome. However, larger substrates like fluorescently labeled casein were processed near the temperature optimum by side-on immobilized and soluble proteasomes with threefold activity compared to end-on immobilized proteasomes. Hence it can be concluded that one pore is sufficient for substrate entry and product release. In other words, the pore and antechamber can fulfil a triple function in the import and unwinding of substrates and the egress of products. With means of surface plasmon resonance the exact substrate/proteasome stoichiometry could be determined to ~1 for 'dead-end' proteasomes and ~2 for side-on immobilized (active and inactive) proteasomes. Most importantly, a fit with the Hill equation revealed positive cooperativity for side-on immobilized (Hill coefficient ~2) in contrast to end-on immobilized proteasomes (Hill coefficient ~1). Thus in case of soluble proteasomes two substrates bind presumably in opposite antechambers with positive cooperativity. The off-rate of casein as substrate is twofold for the active side-on immobilized proteasome in comparison to the end-on immobilized proteasome. The exact 2:1 stoichiometry of the off-rates equals the ratio of exit pathways amenable in case of side-on orientated versus 'dead-end' immobilized proteasomes. Thus crevices along the cylindrical body of the 20 S proteasome seem not to participate in the egress of small products. An inactive proteasome mutant displays a concentration-dependent off-kinetic against casein. Accordingly, the off-rate of the bisubstrate:proteasome complex can be attributed around half the value of the monosubstrate:proteasome complex. Consequently, substrates exit the inactive proteasome via the route of access due to obstruction of the trans side with an entering substrate. Hence the active proteasomes have to chop substrates down to small fragments prior to release through both pores. Thus the processive degradation mode might result from positive binding cooperativity. The on-rate constants for casein suggested that substrate association represents a two-step process comprising a rate-limiting translocation step and a fast binding step. As fluorescence cross-correlation revealed that two substrates can be co-localized in the proteasome and bind successively with increasing affinity (KD,1 = 8 µM versus KD,2 = 700 nM), an allosteric transition in the proteasome can be assumed. Combining our results with the data from other research groups led to a mechanistic model for the 20 S proteasome. Accordingly, the first substrate undergoes a slow translocation step, binds in the antechamber and diffuses subsequently to the catalytic centers, where it is degraded. By switching on the catalytic activity, the pores at both termini are dilated via conformational changes. Hence entry of the second substrate into the proteasome is facilitated due to omission of the rate-determining translocation step. The second substrate is either accommodated in the antechamber before it is processed (alternating degradation) or, most probably, is directly threaded into the central cavity (simultaneous degradation). As effusing peptides compete with entering proteins for binding in the antechamber, the pores are kept in an open state. After finishing digestion the pores are closed and a new degradation cycle can be reinitiated. In summary, substrate association with the proteasome underlies an ordered alternating binding mechanism in contrast to the random mode of degradation. Thus the two-stroke engine offers the advantage of speeding up degradation without enhancing complexity.
The majority of bacterial membrane-bound NiFe-hydrogenases and formate dehydrogenases have homologous membrane-integral cytochrome b subunits. The prototypic NiFe-hydrogenase of Wolinella succinogenes (HydABC complex) catalyzes H2 oxidation by menaquinone during anaerobic respiration and contains a membrane-integral cytochrome b subunit (HydC) that carries the menaquinone reduction site. Using the crystal structure of the homologous FdnI subunit of Escherichia coli formate dehydrogenase-N as a model, the HydC protein was modified to examine residues thought to be involved in menaquinone binding. Variant HydABC complexes were produced in W. succinogenes, and several conserved HydC residues were identified that are essential for growth with H2 as electron donor and for quinone reduction by H2. Modification of HydC with a C-terminal Strep-tag II enabled one-step purification of the HydABC complex by Strep-Tactin affinity chromatography. The tagged HydC, separated from HydAB by isoelectric focusing, was shown to contain 1.9 mol of heme b/mol of HydC demonstrating that HydC ligates both heme b groups. The four histidine residues predicted as axial heme b ligands were individually replaced by alanine in Strep-tagged HydC. Replacement of either histidine ligand of the heme b group proximal to HydAB led to HydABC preparations that contained only one heme b group. This remaining heme b could be completely reduced by quinone supporting the view that the menaquinone reduction site is located near the distal heme b group. The results indicate that both heme b groups are involved in electron transport and that the architecture of the menaquinone reduction site near the cytoplasmic side of the membrane is similar to that proposed for E. coli FdnI.
In contrast to the United States and the United Kingdom, little empirical work exists about the distributional characteristics of appraisalbased real estate returns outside these countries. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap by focusing on Germany. In line with other studies, this paper offers an extensive investigation into the distribution of German real estate returns and compares them with and U.S. and U.K. data in the same period. Furthermore, the comovements with bonds and stocks are also examined. In the core, the distributional characteristics for German real estate are comparable to that for the U.S. and U.K.
We present STAR measurements of charged hadron production as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN ]=130 GeV . The measurements cover a phase space region of 0.2< pT <6.0 GeV/c in transverse momentum and -1< eta <1 in pseudorapidity. Inclusive transverse momentum distributions of charged hadrons in the pseudorapidity region 0.5< | eta | <1 are reported and compared to our previously published results for | eta | <0.5 . No significant difference is seen for inclusive pT distributions of charged hadrons in these two pseudorapidity bins. We measured dN/d eta distributions and truncated mean pT in a region of pT > pcutT , and studied the results in the framework of participant and binary scaling. No clear evidence is observed for participant scaling of charged hadron yield in the measured pT region. The relative importance of hard scattering processes is investigated through binary scaling fraction of particle production.
Maintenance of genomic integrity is essential to avoid cellular transformation, neoplasia, or cell death. DNA synthesis, mitosis, and cytokinesis are important cellular processes required for cell division and the maintenance of cellular homeostasis; they are governed by many extra- and intra-cellular stimuli. Progression of normal cell division depends on cyclin interaction with cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdk) and the degradation of cyclins before chromosomal segregation through ubiquitination. Multiple checkpoints exist and are conserved in the cell cycle in higher eukaryotes to ensure that if one fails, others will take care of genomic integrity and cell survival. Many genes act as either positive or negative regulators of checkpoint function through different kinase cascades, delaying cell cycle progression to repair the DNA lesions and breaks, and assuring equal segregation of chromosomes to daughter cells. Understanding the checkpoint pathways and genes involved in the cellular response to DNA damage and cell division events in normal and cancer cells, provides information about cancer predisposition, and suggests design of small molecules and other strategies for cancer therapy. In morphological systems of the agglutinative type we sometimes encounter a nearly perfect one-to-one relation between form and function. Turkish inflectional morphology is, of course, the standard textbook example. Things seem to be quite different in systems of the flexive type. Declension in Contemporary Standard Russian (henceforth Russian, for short) may be cited as a typical example: We find, among other things, cumulative markers, “synonymous” endings (e.g., dative singular noun forms in -i, -e, or -u), and “homonymous” endings (e.g., -i, genitive, dative, and prepositional singular). True, some endings are more of an agglutinative nature, being bound to a specific case-number combination and applying across declensions, e.g., -am (dative plural, all nouns); and some cross the boundaries of word classes, e.g., -o, which serves as the nominative/accusative singular ending of neuter forms of pronouns (and adjectives) and as the nominative/accusative singular ending of (most) neuter nouns as well. Still, many observers have been struck by the impression that what we face here are rather uneconomic or even, so to speak, unnatural structures. But perhaps flexive systems are not as complicated as they seem. What seems to be uneconomic complexity may be, at least partially, an artifact of uneconomic descriptions.
This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the properties of popular tests for the existence and the sign of the market price of volatility risk. These tests are frequently based on the fact that for some option pricing models under continuous hedging the sign of the market price of volatility risk coincides with the sign of the mean hedging error. Empirically, however, these tests suffer from both discretization error and model mis-specification. We show that these two problems may cause the test to be either no longer able to detect additional priced risk factors or to be unable to identify the sign of their market prices of risk correctly. Our analysis is performed for the model of Black and Scholes (1973) (BS) and the stochastic volatility (SV) model of Heston (1993). In the model of BS, the expected hedging error for a discrete hedge is positive, leading to the wrong conclusion that the stock is not the only priced risk factor. In the model of Heston, the expected hedging error for a hedge in discrete time is positive when the true market price of volatility risk is zero, leading to the wrong conclusion that the market price of volatility risk is positive. If we further introduce model mis-specification by using the BS delta in a Heston world we find that the mean hedging error also depends on the slope of the implied volatility curve and on the equity risk premium. Under parameter scenarios which are similar to those reported in many empirical studies the test statistics tend to be biased upwards. The test often does not detect negative volatility risk premia, or it signals a positive risk premium when it is truly zero. The properties of this test furthermore strongly depend on the location of current volatility relative to its long-term mean, and on the degree of moneyness of the option. As a consequence tests reported in the literature may suffer from the problem that in a time-series framework the researcher cannot draw the hedging errors from the same distribution repeatedly. This implies that there is no guarantee that the empirically computed t-statistic has the assumed distribution. Tests for the existence and the sign of the volatility risk premium are often based on expected option hedging errors. When the hedge is performed under the ideal conditions of continuous trading and correct model specification, the sign of the premium is the same as the sign of the mean hedging error for a large class of stochastic volatility option pricing models. We show, however, that the problems of discrete trading and model mis-specification, which are necessarily present in any empirical study, may cause the standard test to yield unreliable results.
We investigated patterns of bryophyte species richness and composition in two forest types of Colombian Amazonia, non-flooded tierra firme forest and floodplain forest of the Caquetá River. A total of 109 bryophyte species were recorded from 14 0.2 ha plots. Bryophyte life forms and habitats were analyzed, including the canopy and epiphylls. Bryophyte species did not show significant differences between landscapes but mosses and liverworts were different and with opposite responses balancing the overall richness. Independence test showed differences in both life form and habitat use distribution between the two forest types with more fan and mat bryophytes species in the floodplains, and more epiphytic liverworts in the tierra firme forest. Correspondence analysis showed differences in the bryophyte species assemblage between the two forest types where they may be responding to the higher humidity provided by the flooding. Despite of, the environmental differences detected, epiphyll species assemblages were not strongly affected. Apparently, epiphyll habitat is stressful enough to hide the environmental differences between the flooded and Tierra firme forests.
Bryophyte composition in a native grassland community subjected to different long-term fire regimes

The vascular species composition of volcanic plains grassland remnants of western Victoria is strongly tied to management history, with frequently burned remnants often supporting the most diverse native flora relative to grazed and long-unburned remnants. How the fire regime affects the composition of the bryophytic mat, however, has not been documented. I surveyed the moss and liverwort flora of six Themeda triandra grasslands subjected to different long-term fire regimes to understand how fire might affect mat composition. A total of 27 non-vascular species (19 mosses and 8 liverworts) were recorded, of which nine species were recorded only from a single location. Non-vascular species contributed 28% of the total diversity observed in this study. The liverwort Lethocolea pansa was the most obvious species at all sites, while the mosses Rosulabryum billardieri and Fossombronia intestinalis were also found at all sites and hence, would appear to be robust to fire at different frequencies. Frequently-burned (1–2 yr interval) grasslands generally had lower mat species richness than longer-unburned sites (4 to >20 yr intervals) and appear to support a subset of the flora (due to the loss of moss species) rather than a distinctly different flora. The preliminary results of this study contrast with the evidence usually found for vascular species, i.e. that frequent fire favours greater native species richness. Hence, the two components of the flora would appear to respond in different ways to fire and this should be considered in the conservation planning for this grassland community. Further field sampling is warranted to confirm the initial trends identified by this study.
Results were presented from Brownian dynamics simulations for cyt c molecules approximated as spherical particles with diameter 2R ' 3.3 nm interacting with a charged planar membrane surface. Using the well-known Ermak-McCammon algorithm of ref. [36, 37] for solving the Langevin equations (see Chapter 2), a new computer program in C++ was developed. An overview of the way it is implemented is given in Chapter 3. The program in its current state is able to compute the trajectories (translation and rotation) of hundreds of spherical particles in systems with typical dimensions of 103 − 1003 nm3 . As explained in the introductory Chapter 1 the motivation for studying the dynamics of cyt c molecules in such systems came from the progress in the research of photosynthetic bacteria, e.g. While the internal processes of energy transduction (light harvesting, channelling to RC, charge separation) are quite well understood, the dynamics of soluble cyt c as an electron transporter in this context is not yet clear. In many textbooks one can find illustrations where a single cyt c is responsible for the electron transport between two integral membrane proteins (the reaction centre RC and the bc1 complex). But as pointed out in publications like refs. [49], [59], [60], [61] or [62] biological cells are crowded with different molecules. Consequently, one can assume that the electron transport between two integral membrane proteins is not simply taken on by one single cyt c molecule. Instead it is likely that many of these particles are located in a cyt c pool above the membrane and that they perform the electron transport in turns. Thus, it is desirable to have a simulation package that is able to compute the trajectories of many proteins. Note that the detailed processes of electron transfer and binding to membrane proteins are not modelled here. The details of these processes are quite complicated so that we refrained from including them in the coarse-grained simulations. Here, the actual binding is simply defined by a particle distance zb from the membrane which marks the beginning of the attractive potential. ...
The paper explains the absence of resultative secondary predication in Russian as arising from a conflict of inferential interpretations. It formalises the framework necessary to express this proposal in terms of abductive reasoning with Poole systems in Gricean contexts. The conflict is shown to arise for default rules regulating alternative realisation of verb-internally specified consequent states. The paper thus indicates that typological variation may be due not only to different parameter values but to general inferential properties of the syntax-semantics mapping. The proposed theory also contradicts some widespread proposals that the absence of resultative secondary predication is due to the absence of some particular language feature.
The receptor tyrosine kinase ErbB2 (HER2) is overexpressed in multiple human tumors of epithelial origin. High ErbB2 expression is functionally involved in tumorigenesis and correlates with poor clinical prognosis. For immunotherapy of ErbB2 expressing tumors, we developed a strategy to supply the tumor cells with costimulatory activity. A bispecific fusion protein was constructed (BIg5), containing the IgV-like domain of huCD86, the CH2/CH3 domain of huIgG1 and the ErbB2-specific single chain antibody fragment scFv(FRP5). A similar fusion protein lacking the CD86 domain (Ig5) was used as a control. Upon binding of BIg5 to ErbB2 on tumor cells, these cells display CD86 on their surface and thus can deliver costimulatory signals for T-cell activation. In addition, NK cells could be activated by CD86 binding to CD28. BIg5 is secreted by eukaryotic cells as a homodimer with increased stability compared to monomers and possibly enhanced costimulatory activity due to crosslinking of CD28 on effector cells. By FACS analysis, specific binding of the scFv(FRP5) domain to ErbB2 as well as CD86 IgV binding to CTLA-4 could be demonstrated. Together with anti-CD3 antibody, BIg5 stimulates proliferation of human CD2-purified lymphocytes in vitro. After binding to ErbB2 on murine Renca-lacZ/ErbB2 tumor cells, about 50% of initially bound BIg5 is still present on the cell surface after 4 hours. For delivery of chimeric fusion proteins in vivo, we used syngeneic, stably transfected HC11 mammary epithelial cells continuously secreting the proteins. Inoculation of these bystander cells close to subcutaneously growing Renca-lacZ/ErbB2 tumors should provide a long-lasting source to achieve high local concentrations of BIg5 at the tumor site. In vivo HC11-BIg5 cells proved to be non-tumorigenic and secreted BIg5 for several weeks, causing a strong anti-BIg5 antibody response. Treatment of established Renca-lacZ/ErbB2 or ErbB2-negative Renca-lacZ tumors by peritumoral inoculation of either HC11-BIg5 or HC11-Ig5 cells led to rejection of all Renca-lacZ/ErbB2, but none of the Renca-lacZ tumors. HC11neo control cells had no effect on tumor growth. Rejection of ErbB2+ tumors led to long-term protection also against subsequent challenge with intravenously injected ErbB2- tumor cells. Intraperitoneal injection of bystander cells secreting the fusion proteins did not lead to tumor regression suggesting that high local concentrations at the tumor site are necessary to target ErbB2 on tumor cells and to overcome elimination of BIg5 or Ig5 by neutralizing antibodies. The CD86 IgV domain of BIg5 did not play a major role in the observed antitumoral immune response suggesting NK-cell mediated ADCC as the initial effector mechanism followed by activation of tumor specific T cells. Targeting of ErbB2 on tumor cells with antibody fusion proteins that interact specifically with the host immune system could be an efficient and specific approach for therapy of solid ErbB2+ tumors.
The biomarker record in two different lakes in central Europe, Lake Albano and Lake Constance, is used to reflect environmental changes and lake system response during the Late Glacial and Holocene. Extractable organic compounds in lake sediments, which can be assigned to their biological source (biomarkers) function as fingerprints of past aquatic or land plant organisms. Using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, 21 different biomarkers (predominantly steroids and triterpenoids) as well as a variety of n-alkanes, nalkanols, and n-alkanoic acids could be identified in the sediment records of Lake Albano and Lake Constance. In the Holocene sediments of Lake Albano, the distribution of biomarkers such as dinosterol (dinoflagellates), isoarborinol, and diplopterol (aquatic organisms) indicate three biomarker zones: The period between 0-3,800 years BP (zone 3) is characterized by high concentrations of these biomarkers and others such as tetrahymanol and diploptene. Conversely, zone 2 (3,800-6,500 years BP) shows very low concentrations of all autochthonous biomarkers. In zone 1 (6,500–11,480 years BP), dinosterol, isoarborinol, and diplopterol range on a relatively high level, whereas diploptene and tetrahymanol display comparatively low concentrations. The results suggest at least two distinct changes in the predominance of primary producers during the Holocene, which are related to changes in the lake system such as lake mixing and water column stratification. This interpretation is consistent with previous investigations of Lake Albano sediments including pigment and hydrogen index data (Ariztegui et al., 1996b; Guilizzoni et al., 2002). Allochthonous biomarkers such as long-chain n-alkanes, amyrenones and friedelin indicate a development from forest to a more open landscape from 6,000 and 5.000 years BP, respectively. After a period of high concentrations during the first half of the Holocene, all biomarkers derived from deciduous trees exhibit relatively low values until around 1,000 years BP. Again, this is consistent with results from previous pollen investigations (Ariztegui et al., 2000). The sediment core from Upper Lake Constance comprises the Late Glacial and Holocene. It was analysed for biomarkers and inorganic tracers in order to compare the biomarker results with other proxy data from the same core. Magnetic susceptibility (MS) was measured to get a high-resolution stratigraphic framework of the core and to obtain further information about changes of the proportions of allochthonous and autochthonous input. Enhanced concentrations and accumulation rates of dinosterol (biomarker for dinoflagellates) and biogenic calcite give evidence of increasing lake productivity at the beginning of the Holocene followed by a decrease in bioproductivity after around 7,000 years BP. Younger Dryas sediments are characterized by low amounts of both dinosterol and biogenic calcite indicating a low productivity. The comparison of the concentrations and accumulation rates of b-sitosterol and stigmastanol with parameters reflecting lake productivity suggests that both steroids in Lake Constance sediments are mainly derived from terrigenous sources. Biomarkers as well as concentrations and accumulation rates of allochthonous inorganic compounds such as titanium, magnesium and strontium indicate a slightly enhanced allochthonous input after 8,500 years BP. Significant increase of erosive matter input from enhanced soil erosion is not observed before 4,000 years BP. This can be attributed to the combined effects of precipitation increase as a result of climatic deterioration and anthropogenic deforestation which is consistent with observations from other lakes in Central Europe. The MS record of Lake Constance confirms these results by tracing the climatically induced shifts of more intense bioproduction (low MS caused by increased calcite deposition) during the ‘climatic optimum’. This is followed by increasing input of terrigenous sediment compounds during colder and wetter periods which lead to higher MS values in the lake sediments. The occurrence of tetrahymanol in Lake Constance sediments questions the unambiguous use of tetrahymanol as an indicator for water column stratification. Anaerobic organic macroaggregates within the oxygenated, photic zone of the water column have to be considered as a possible living space for anaerobic microorganisms containing tetrahymanol. The direct comparison of two very different lakes Albano and Constance with respect to biomarkers indicating climate or environmental change provides a contribution to the recent biomarker research for a better understanding of biomarkers in lacustrine sediments.
How might retirees consider deploying the retirement assets accumulated in a defined contribution pension plan? One possibility would be to purchase an immediate annuity. Another approach, called the "phased withdrawal" strategy in the literature, would have the retiree invest his funds and then withdraw some portion of the account annually. Using this second tactic, the withdrawal rate might be determined according to a fixed benefit level payable until the retiree dies or the funds run out, or it could be set using a variable formula, where the retiree withdraws funds according to a rule linked to life expectancy. Using a range of data consistent with the German experience, we evaluate several alternative designs for phased withdrawal strategies, allowing for endogenous asset allocation patterns, and also allowing the worker to make decisions both about when to retire and when to switch to an annuity. We show that one particular phased withdrawal rule is appealing since it offers relatively low expected shortfall risk, good expected payouts for the retiree during his life, and some bequest potential for the heirs. We also find that unisex mortality tables if used for annuity pricing can make women's expected shortfalls higher, expected benefits higher, and bequests lower under a phased withdrawal program. Finally, we show that delayed annuitization can be appealing since it provides higher expected benefits with lower expected shortfalls, at the cost of somewhat lower anticipated bequests. In hindsight, the debate about presupposition following Frege’s discovery that the referential function of names and definite descriptions depended on the fulfillment of an existence and a uniqueness condition was curiously limited for a very long time. On the one hand, it was only in the 1960s that linguists began to take an interest and showed that presupposition was an allpervasive phenomenon far beyond this philosophers’ pet definite descriptions. And on the other hand, and this is our real concern, it is now only too obvious that the uniqueness condition is too restrictive to be applicable to the general case. An utterance of “The cat is on the mat” should not imply that there is only one cat and one mat in the whole world. The obvious move is to limit the uniqueness condition to some notion of utterance context.
Since 1973 I have been advocating the view that the Balto-Slavic acute tone was in fact glottalic and has been preserved unchanged in originally stressed and unstressed syllables in Žemaitian and Latvian, respectively (e.g. 1975, 1977, 1985, 1998). Jay Jasanoff has now (2004) adopted the gist of my view, but with-out mentioning my name. It may therefore be useful to sketch the background of our differences and to point out the remaining discrepancies.
Azimuthally sensitive Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=200 GeV

We present the results of a systematic study of the shape of the pion distribution in coordinate space at freeze-out in Au+Au collisions at BNL RHIC using two-pion Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry. Oscillations of the extracted HBT radii versus emission angle indicate sources elongated perpendicular to the reaction plane. The results indicate that the pressure and expansion time of the collision system are not sufficient to completely quench its initial shape.
We report the first observations of the first harmonic (directed flow, v1) and the fourth harmonic (v4), in the azimuthal distribution of particles with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Both measurements were done taking advantage of the large elliptic flow (v2) generated at RHIC. From the correlation of v2 with v1 it is determined that v2 is positive, or in-plane. The integrated v4 is about a factor of 10 smaller than v2. For the sixth (v6) and eighth (v8) harmonics upper limits on the magnitudes are reported.
Results on high transverse momentum charged particle emission with respect to the reaction plane are presented for Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=200 GeV. Two- and four-particle correlations results are presented as well as a comparison of azimuthal correlations in Au+Au collisions to those in p+p at the same energy. The elliptic anisotropy v2 is found to reach its maximum at pt~3 GeV/c, then decrease slowly and remain significant up to pt ~ 7-10 GeV/c. Stronger suppression is found in the back-to-back high-pt particle correlations for particles emitted out of plane compared to those emitted in plane. The centrality dependence of v2 at intermediate pt is compared to simple models based on jet quenching.

A network across both disciplines should help keep us well informed of the latest news and research within the region. Volker is very enthusiastic about the society and I encourage members to keep supporting the newsletter by sending him your articles. Volker has been helping me develop the webpage so that will continue to evolve.
Stable supercomplexes of bacterial respiratory chain complexes III (ubiquinol:cytochrome c oxidoreductase) and IV (cytochrome c oxidase) have been isolated as early as 1985 (Berry, E. A., and Trumpower, B. L. (1985) J. Biol. Chem. 260, 2458-2467). However, these assemblies did not comprise complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase). Using the mild detergent digitonin for solubilization of Paracoccus denitrificans membranes we could isolate NADH oxidase, assembled from complexes I, III, and IV in a 1:4:4 stoichiometry. This is the first chromatographic isolation of a complete “respirasome.” Inactivation of the gene for tightly bound cytochrome c552 did not prevent formation of this supercomplex, indicating that this electron carrier protein is not essential for structurally linking complexes III and IV. Complex I activity was also found in the membranes of mutant strains lacking complexes III or IV. However, no assembled complex I but only dissociated subunits were observed following the same protocols used for electrophoretic separation or chromatographic isolation of the supercomplex from the wild-type strain. This indicates that the P. denitrificans complex I is stabilized by assembly into the NADH oxidase supercomplex. In addition to substrate channeling, structural stabilization of a membrane protein complex thus appears as one of the major functions of respiratory chain supercomplexes.
Arsenic trioxide is a toxic metalloid and carcinogen that is also used as an anticancer drug, and for this reason it is important to identify the routes of arsenite uptake by cells. In this study the ability of hexose transporters to facilitate arsenic trioxide uptake in Saccharomyces cerevisiae was examined. In the absence of glucose, strains with disruption of the arsenite efflux gene ACR3 accumulated high levels of (73)As(OH)(3). The addition of glucose inhibited uptake by approximately 80%. Disruption of FPS1, the aquaglyceroporin gene, reduced glucose-independent uptake by only about 25%, and the residual uptake was nearly completely inhibited by hexoses, including glucose, galactose, mannose, and fructose but not pentoses or disaccharides. A strain lacking FPS1, ACR3, and all genes for hexose permeases except for HXT3, HXT6, HXT7, and GAL2 exhibited hexose-inhibitable (73)As(OH)(3) uptake, whereas a strain lacking all 18 hexose transport-related genes (HXT1 to HXT17 and GAL2), FPS1 and ACR3, exhibited <10% of wild type (73)As(OH)(3) transport. When HXT1, HXT3, HXT4, HXT5, HXT7, or HXT9 was individually expressed in that strain, hexose-inhibitable (73)As(OH)(3) uptake was restored. In addition, the transport of [(14)C]glucose was inhibited by As(OH)(3). These results clearly demonstrate that hexose permeases catalyze the majority of the transport of the trivalent metalloid arsenic trioxide.
Earlier studies of the seigniorage inflation model have found that the high-inflation steady state is not stable under adaptive learning. We reconsider this issue and analyze the full set of solutions for the linearized model. Our main focus is on stationary hyperinflationary paths near the high-inflation steady state. The hyperinflationary paths are stable under learning if agents can utilize contemporaneous data. This paper aims to analyze the impact of different types of venture capitalists on the performance of their portfolio firms around and after the IPO. We thereby investigate the hypothesis that different governance structures, objectives and track record of different types of VCs have a significant impact on their respective IPOs. We explore this hypothesis by using a data set embracing all IPOs which occurred on Germany's Neuer Markt. Our main finding is that significant differences among the different VCs exist. Firms backed by independent VCs perform significantly better two years after the IPO compared to all other IPOs and their share prices fluctuate less than those of their counterparts in this period of time. Obviously, independent VCs, which concentrated mainly on growth stocks (low book-to-market ratio) and large firms (high market value), were able to add value by leading to less post-IPO idiosyncratic risk and more return (after controlling for all other effects). However, in contexts like wh-questions, the oblique object in an antipassive may be interpreted as specific, as noted by Schachter & Otanes (1972), Maclachlan & Nakamura (1997), Rackowski (2002), and others. […] In this paper, I propose to account for the specificity effects […] within the analysis of Tagalog syntax put forth by Aldridge (2004). I analyze Tagalog as an ergative language […]. Cross linguistically, antipassive oblique objects receive a nonspecific interpretation, while absolutives are definite or generic. I show in this paper how the Tagalog facts can be subsumed under a general account of ergativity.
Antibaryons bound in nuclei

We study the possibility of producing a new kind of nuclear systems which in addition to ordinary nucleons contain a few antibaryons (B = p, , etc.). The properties of such systems are described within the relativistic mean field model by employing G parity transformed interactions for antibaryons. Calculations are first done for infinite systems and then for finite nuclei from 4He to 208Pb. It is demonstrated that the presence of a real antibaryon leads to a strong rearrangement of a target nucleus resulting in a significant increase of its binding energy and local compression. Noticeable e ects remain even after the antibaryon coupling constants are reduced by factor 3 4 compared to G parity motivated values. We have performed detailed calculations of the antibaryon annihilation rates in the nuclear environment by applying a kinetic approach. It is shown that due to significant reduction of the reaction Q values, the in medium annihilation rates should be strongly suppressed leading to relatively long lived antibaryon nucleus systems. Multi nucleon annihilation channels are analyzed too. We have also estimated formation probabilities of bound B + A systems in pA reactions and have found that their observation will be feasible at the future GSI antiproton facility. Zur gegenwärtigen Philosophie des Mentalen bei Donald Davidson und David Lewis (2001) "Anomaler Monismus und Mentale Kausalität. Are Mental Properties real or unreal (fictive)? Abstract Things and events are fundamental entities in Davidson's ontology. Less distinct is the ontological status of properties, especially of mental types. Despite of some eliminative allusions there are weighty reasons to understand Davidson's philosophy of mind as including intentional realism. With it, the question of mental causality arises. There are two striking solutions to this problem: the epiphenomenalism of mental properties and the downward causation of mental events. Davidson cannot accept either. He claims to justify the mental as supervenient causality in order to thus integrate it into physicalism (his version of monism). But his argument at best proves the explanatory, not the causal relevance of mental properties. For this and for other reasons, Davidson fails the aspired synthesis of a sufficiently strong physicalism and the autonomy of the mental; a project whose realization is anyhow hard to achieve.
In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of our first version of the database "ANNIS" (ANNotation of Information Structure). For research based on empirical data, ANNIS provides a uniform environment for storing this data together with its linguistic annotations. A central database promotes standardized annotation, which facilitates interpretation and comparison of the data. ANNIS is used through a standard web browser and offers tier-based visualization of data and annotations, as well as search facilities that allow for cross-level and cross-sentential queries. The paper motivates the design of the system, characterizes its user interface, and provides an initial technical evaluation of ANNIS with respect to data size and query processing.
The wave function of a spheroidal harmonic oscillator without spin-orbit interaction is expressed in terms of associated Laguerre and Hermite polynomials. The pairing gap and Fermi energy are found by solving the BCS system of two equations. Analytical relationships for the matrix elements of inertia are obtained function of the main quantum numbers and potential derivative. They may be used to test complex computer codes one should develop in a realistic approach of the fission dynamics. The results given for the 240 Pu nucleus are compared with a hydrodynamical model. The importance of taking into account the correction term due to the variation of the occupation number is stressed.
In the present study possible sources and pathways of the gasoline additive methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) in the aquatic environment in Germany were investigated. The objective of the present study was to clarify some of the questions raised by a previous study on the MTBE situation in Germany. In the USA and Europe 12 million t and 3 million t of MTBE, respectively, are used as gasoline additive. The detection of MTBE in the aquatic environment and the potential risk for drinking water resources led to a phase-out of MTBE as gasoline additive in single states of the USA. Meanwhile there is also an ongoing discussion about the substitution of MTBE in Europe and Germany. The annual usage of MTBE in Germany is about 600,000 t. However, compared to the USA, significant less data exists on the occurrence of MTBE in the aquatic environment in Europe. Because of its physico-chemical properties, MTBE readily vaporizes from gasoline, is water soluble, adsorbs only weakly to the underground matrix and is largely persistent to biological degradation. The toxicity of MTBE remains to be completely investigated, but MTBE in drinking water has low taste- and odor thresholds of 20-40 microgram/L. The present study was conducted by collecting water samples and analyzing them for their MTBE concentrations through a combination of headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The detection limit was 10 ng/L. The method was successfully tested in the framework of an interlaboratory study and showed recoveries of reference values of 89% (74 ng/L) and 104% (256 ng/L). The relative standard deviations were 12% and 6%. The investigation of 83 water samples from 50 community water systems (CWSs) in Germany revealed a detection frequency of 40% and a concentration range of 17-712 ng/L. The detection of MTBE in the drinking water samples could be explained by a groundwater pollution and the pathway river - riverbank filtration - waterworks. Rivers are important drinking water sources. MTBE is emitted into rivers through a variety of sources. In the present study, potential point sources were investigated, i.e. MTBE production sites/refineries/tank farms and groundwater pollutions. For this purpose, the spatial distribution of MTBE in three German rivers with the named potential emission sources located close to the rivers was investigated by analyzing 49 corresponding river water samples. The influence of the potential emission sources groundwater pollution and refinery/tank farm was successfully demonstrated in certain parts of the River Saale and the River Rhine. Increasing MTBE concentrations from 24 ng/L to 379 ng/L and from 73 ng/L to 5 microgram/L, respectively, could be observed in the parts investigated in these two rivers. The identification of such emission sources is important for future modeling. Further sources of MTBE emission into surface water are industrial (non-petrochemical) and municipal sewage plant effluents. In the present study long-term monitoring of water from the River Main (n=67 samples), precipitation (n=89) and industrial (n=34) and municipal sewage plant effluents (n=66) was conducted. The comparison of the data sets revealed that maximum MTBE concentrations in the River Main of up to 1 microgram/L were most possibly due to single industrial effluents with MTBE concentrations of up to 28 microgram/L (measured in this study). The average MTBE content of 66 ng/L in the River Main most probably originated from municipal sewage plant effluents and further industrial effluents. Background concentrations of <30 ng/L could be related to the direct atmospheric input via precipitation. A certain aspect of the atmospheric MTBE input is represented by the input of MTBE into river water or groundwater through snow. In the present study 43 snow samples from 13 different locations were analyzed for their MTBE content. MTBE could be detected in 65% of the urban and rural samples. The concentrations ranged from 11-613 ng/L and were higher than the concentrations in rainwater samples formerly analyzed. Furthermore, a temperature dependency and wash-out effects could be observed. The atmospheric input of MTBE was in part also visible in the analyzed groundwater samples (n=170). The detection frequencies in non-urban and urban wells were 24% and 63%, respectively. The median concentrations were 177 ng/L and 57 ng/L. In wells located in the vicinity of sites with gasoline contaminated groundwater, MTBE concentrations of up to 42 mg/L could be observed. The MTBE emission sources and the different pathways of MTBE in the aquatic environment demonstrated in the present study and other works raise the question whether the use of MTBE in a bulk product like gasoline should be continued in the future. Currently, possible substitutes like ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE) or ethanol are being discussed.
Religious Anthropology studies the origins, evolution and functions of religions. The discipline researching religious beliefs and rituals comparatively with cross-cultural perspectives tries to enlighten the belief world of the mankind. Religion, as a term, can be defined as "believing as well as worshipping to the supernatural powers and/or beings by the individual who are emotionally or consciously devoted to them" (Örnek 1988: 127). There have been a number of theories so far which try to bring an explanation to the origins and the evolution of religion. In these theories, Fetishism, cults of nature, animism, Totemism, dynamism, Manism, magic, polytheism, monotheism as well as certain physiological phenomena have been particularized as evolutionary stages and forms of belief (Evans-Pritchard 1998: 124). All of these theories have the perspective of so called "progressive" and / or "unilinear" that maintain a religion which has reached ongoing stages and that communities which have developed from primitiveness to civilization. They argue that there has only been one single line of progress, and all of the communities are bound to go through the same evolutionary stages.
Nitric oxide (NO)-sensitive soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) is the major cytosolic receptor for NO, catalyzing the conversion of GTP to cGMP. In a search for proteins specifically interacting with human sGC, we have identified the multidomain protein AGAP1, the prototype of an ArfGAP protein with a GTPase-like domain, Ankyrin repeats, and a pleckstrin homology domain. AGAP1 binds through its carboxyl terminal portion to both the α1 and β1 subunits of sGC. We demonstrate that AGAP1 mRNA and protein are co-expressed with sGC in human, murine, and rat cells and tissues and that the two proteins interact in vitro and in vivo. We also show that AGAP1 is prone to tyrosine phosphorylation by Src-like kinases and that tyrosine phosphorylation potently increases the interaction between AGAP1 and sGC, indicating that complex formation is modulated by reversible phosphorylation. Our findings may hint to a potential role of AGAP1 in integrating signals from Arf, NO/cGMP, and tyrosine kinase signaling pathways.

Qiang is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken by 70,000-80,000 people in Northern Sichuan Province, China, classified as being in the Qiang or Tibetan nationality by the Chinese government. The language is verb final, agglutinative (prefixing and suffixing), and has both head-marking and dependent-marking morphology.
New and remarkable records of bryophytes from Venezuela, Brazil, Costa Rica and Ecuador are reported. Diphyscium chiapense and Hedwigia ciliata var. leucophaea are new to South America. New to Venezuela are Grimmia reflexidens, Metzgeria claviflora, Pilopogon peruvianus and Racomitrium subsecundum; Grimmia navicularis and G. trichophylla are firstly reported for Brazil; Aphanolejeunea microscopica var. africana, A. minuta, A. sintenisii, Cololejeunea bischleriana, Metalejeunea cucullata, and Hyophila nymaniana represent new records for Costa Rica, and new to Ecuador are Diphyscium longifolium, Erpodium beccarii, Macrocolura sagittistipula, and (for continental Ecuador) Marchantia berteroana. Further new records to the states of that countries and rarely collected species are listed. All specimens are deposited in the private herbaria of the authors, duplicates in different herbaria as indicated.
In bioinformatics, biochemical pathways can be modeled by many differential equations. It is still an open problem how to fit the huge amount of parameters of the equations to the available data. Here, the approach of systematically learning the parameters is necessary. In this paper, for the small, important example of inflammation modeling a network is constructed and different learning algorithms are proposed. It turned out that due to the nonlinear dynamics evolutionary approaches are necessary to fit the parameters for sparse, given data. Most scholars nowadays reconstruct a static root present with an alternation between lengthened grade in the active singular and full grade in the active plural and in the middle. I am unhappy about this traditional methodology of loosely postulating long vowels for the proto-language. What we need is a powerful theory which explains why clear instances of original lengthened grade are so very few and restrains our reconstructions accordingly. Such a theory has been available for over a hundred years now: it was put forward by Wackernagel in his Old Indic grammar (1896: 66-68). The crucial element of his theory which is relevant in the present context is that he assumed lengthening in monosyllabic word forms, such as the 2nd and 3rd sg. active forms of the sigmatic aorist injunctive.
The bulk of this paper deals with an analysis of the voice system of Tukang Besi, which, has both a complex verbal agreement system as well as the last fully developed (and obligatory) case marking system among Austronesian languages with an increasingly head-marking trend to the east (case marking of core constituents only becomes functional again in Vanuatu and the Solomons, and is well-developed in Polynesia). For that reason, as well as personal acquaintance with the language, it is a sensible starting point.
This paper reports on the SYN-RA (SYNtax-based Reference Annotation) project, an on-going project of annotating German newspaper texts with referential relations. The project has developed an inventory of anaphoric and coreference relations for German in the context of a unified, XML-based annotation scheme for combining morphological, syntactic, semantic, and anaphoric information. The paper discusses how this unified annotation scheme relates to other formats currently discussed in the literature, in particular the annotation graph model of Bird and Liberman (2001) and the pie-in-thesky scheme for semantic annotation.
A revised and updated literature-based checklist of Hawaiian mosses is presented. Geographic coverage includes the eight main Hawaiian Islands; the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are excluded. The checklist is alphabetically ordered by scientific names; the family is noted for each genus. Synonyms and misapplied names are cross-referenced to the accepted names. A bibliography of supporting references is included.
Hackethal and Schmidt (2003) criticize a large body of literature on the financing of corporate sectors in different countries that questions some of the distinctions conventionally drawn between financial systems. Their criticism is directed against the use of net flows of finance and they propose alternative measures based on gross flows which they claim re-establish conventional distinctions. This paper argues that their criticism is invalid and that their alternative measures are misleading. There are real issues raised by the use of aggregate data but they are not the ones discussed in Hackethal and Schmidt’s paper. JEL Classification: G30
Downey (1998) collated an inventory of mistletoe host species based on herbaria records for every aerial mistletoe species (families Loranthaceae and Viscaceae) in Australia. In this paper the representative nature of those host lists is examined in an extensive field survey of mistletoes and their host species in south-eastern New South Wales (including Australian Capital Territory). Four new host species not in the 1998 inventory, and eight new mistletoe-host combinations (i.e. a previously recorded host but not for that particular mistletoe species) were collected. These new records were distributed throughout the survey area. Interestingly, these new host-mistletoe combinations were for mistletoe species that were well represented in the national inventory (i.e. with many herbarium collections and numerous host species). The initial inventory was incomplete, at least for south-eastern New South Wales, indicating the need for (i) more targeted surveys similar to this one, and/or (ii) regular updates of the host inventory based on voucher specimens. A possible reasons why information on host-mistletoe combinations is incomplete may be that such combinations may be dynamic (i.e. mistletoe species may be expanding their suite of potential hosts, either fortuitously or as result of evolutionary pressures).

WE APPLY THE MODEL TO AN IT INFRASTRUCTURE OUTSOURCING DECISION AND DETERMINE - BASED ON COST SAVINGS RESULTING FROM OUTSOURCING AND OPTION VALUES ACCOUNTING FOR UNCERTAINTY - DIFFERENT “TRIGGER” OUTPUT VOLUMES WHICH INDICATE IF IN- OR OUTSOURCING IS PREFERABLE. FINALLY WE SHOW THAT THE MODEL CAN ALSO BE TRANSFERRED TO SOURCING DECISIONS OF TRANSACTION BASED BUSINESS PROCESSES LIKE CLEARING AND SETTLEMENT OF SECURITIES.
A pragmatic explanation of the stage level/individual level contrast in combination with locatives

One important difference between stage level predicates (SLPs) and individual level predicates (ILPs) is their behavior with respect to locative modifiers. It is commonly assumed that SLPs but not ILPs combine with locatives. The present study argues against a semantic account for this behavior (as advanced by e.g. Kratzer 1995, Chierchia 1995) and proposes a genuinely pragmatic explanation of the observed stage level/individual level contrast instead. The proposal is spelled out using Blutners (1998, 2000) optimality theoretic version of the Gricean maxims. Building on the observation that the respective locatives are not event-related but frame-setting modifiers, the preference for main predicates that express temporary properties is explained as a side-effect of “synchronizing” the main predicate with the locative frame in the course of finding an optimal interpretation. By emphasizing the division of labor between grammar and pragmatics, the proposed solution takes a considerable load off of semantics.
The Box-Cox quantile regression model using the two stage method introduced by Chamberlain (1994) and Buchinsky (1995) provides an attractive extension of linear quantile regression techniques. However, a major numerical problem exists when implementing this method which has not been addressed so far in the literature. We suggest a simple solution modifying the estimator slightly. This modification is easy to implement. The modified estimator is still [square root] n-consistent and its asymptotic distribution can easily be derived. A simulation study confirms that the modified estimator works well.
We extend the important idea of range-based volatility estimation to the multivariate case. In particular, we propose a range-based covariance estimator that is motivated by financial economic considerations (the absence of arbitrage), in addition to statistical considerations. We show that, unlike other univariate and multivariate volatility estimators, the range-based estimator is highly efficient yet robust to market microstructure noise arising from bid-ask bounce and asynchronous trading. Finally, we provide an empirical example illustrating the value of the high-frequency sample path information contained in the range-based estimates in a multivariate GARCH framework.
