We provide new records of biting and predaceous midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from Florida, including the first documented United States records of Atrichopogon (Atrichopogon) caribbeanus Ewen, Dasyhelea griseola Wirth, D. scissurae Macfie, and Brachypogon (Brachypogon) woodruffi Spinelli and Grogan. Atrichopogon (Meloehelea) downesi Wirth, Forcipomyia (Thyridomyia) monilicornis (Coquillett), F. (T.) nodosa Saunders, Ceratoculicoides blantoni Wirth and Ratanaworabhan, Mallochohelea albibasis (Malloch), Bezzia (Bezzia) imbifida Dow and Turner and B. (B.) mallochi Wirth are recorded for the first time from Florida. Forcipomyia (Thyridomyia) johannseni Thomsen, Bezzia (Bezzia) expolita (Coquillett), and B. (B.) pulverea (Coquillett) are deleted from the ceratopogonid fauna of Florida. Dasyhelea koenigi Delécolle and Rieb is a junior objective synonym of Dasyhelea scissurae Macfie (NEW SYNONYM). The total number of Ceratopogonidae recorded from Florida is now 249 species contained within 27 genera.
Twenty eight species of Temnocerus Thunberg, 1815 are recognized from Central America (Mexico to Panama) with eight previously described species and 20 new species as follows: T. abdominalis (Voss), T. chiapensis n. sp., T. chiriquensis (Sharp), T. confertus (Sharp), T. cyaneus n. sp., T. ellus n. sp., T. giganteus n. sp., T. guatemalenus (Sharp), T. guerrerensis n. sp., T. herediensis n. sp., T. mexicanus n. sp., T. michoacensis n. sp., T. minutus n. sp., T. niger n. sp., T. oaxacensis n. sp., T. obrieni, n. sp., T. oculatus (Sharp), T. potosi n. sp., T. pseudaeratus n. sp., T. pueblensis n. sp., T. pusillus (Sharp), T. regularis (Sharp), T. rostralis n. sp., T. rugosus n. sp., T. salvensis n. sp., T. tamaulipensis n. sp., T. thesaurus (Sharp) and T. yucatensis n. sp. Rhynchites debilis Sharp is placed in synonymy with Temnocerus guatemalenus (Sharp) and Pselaphorhynchites lindae Hamilton is placed in synonymy with Temnocerus regularis (Sharp). A key to species based on external characters and male genitalia is provided as well as digital images, aedeagus drawings, and map distributions.
Three families in the superfamily Calopterygoidea occur in China, viz. the Calopterygidae, Chlorocyphidae and Euphaeidae. They include numerous species that are distributed widely across South China, mainly in streams and upland running waters at moderate altitudes. To date, our knowledge of Chinese species has remained inadequate: the taxonomy of some genera is unresolved and no attempt has been made to map the distribution of the various species and genera. This project is therefore aimed at providing taxonomic (including on larval morphology), biological, and distributional information on the superfamily in South China.
Characteristics of the Christian movement in North Korea and the former GDR are fundamentally different and based on the facts presented before. While the Christians in the North can only operate in the underground, at risk of being sentenced to work in a labour camp, to torture or even to execution when identified as Christian, the Christians in the GDR were freer although they suffered from repression, too. Compared to non-members they had clearly many disadvantages. However, as a state-independent organization, they were officially recognised and therefore an institution that was capable of leading a dialogue with the government. Moreover, they were able to connect themselves to other political alternative groups representing together a quite large group that was dissatisfied with the present situation without having the prior goal to overthrow the state. Awareness, dialogue and organization - these factors can be considered as decisive advantages in this process. As for North Korea creating awareness and dialogue seems to be a target for support. Even from a humanitarian angle alone. Awareness comes through information and that should be increased, e.g. through mutual development projects, continuous human and food aid, or why not initiating town twining? Just to name a few. More contact will generate more awareness and people will start rethinking their attitudes. Even if the elite benefits it may have a positive impact. Dialogue is pivotal in order to exchange one’s ideas und rethink one’s standpoints. Thus, a dialogue with the outside world shall be maintained and a dialogue among the people within the country shall be supported. Time will show if the introduction of mobile phones and the internet in North Korea will increase dialogue and will finally lead to the third suggested step of grass roots community building - organization. An ecclesial movement alone did not cause the change in East Germany and it will not do in North Korea. But it provided an important ground to connect people and accelerate change in the long run.
Die ägyptische Al-Azhar Universität feierte in März des Jahres 1983 ihr tausendjähriges Gründungsjubiläum. Chronologisch ist dieses Jubiläum allerdings etwas umstritten. In Wahrheit sind seit der Gründung der Al-Azhar nämlich keine 1000, sondern bereits 1013 Jahre verstrichen. Die Bauarbeiten an der Al-Azhar Moschee hatten bereits im April 970 angefangen. Die tausend Jahre verstehen sich somit als Beginn des eigentlichen Studienbetriebs an der Al-Azhar, die als Institution einige Jahre älter ist. Schon im Jahre 1942 hatte eine 1000-Jahrfeier an der Al-Azhar abgehalten werden sollen. Laut islamischem Mondkalender waren in eben diesem Jahr 1000 Mondjahre vergangen, doch die Ereignisse des 2. Weltkrieges, in den ja auch Ägypten verwickelt war, machten jede Hoffnung auf dies bezügliche Feierlichkeiten zunichte. Die Al-Azhar-Universität nennt sich die älteste Universität der Welt, durchaus mit Recht. Wenngleich man zugeben muß, daß schon lange vor der Gründung der Al-Azhar, Schulen und Akademien für das Studium aller Wissensgebiete existierten, von denen die bedeutendsten gerade hier in Ägypten angesiedelt waren. Man denke nur an die altägyptische Akademie von On, welcher Ort später von den Griechen Heliopolis genannt wurde, oder an die berühmte antike Akademie von Alexandrien. Es ist somit kein Zufall, daß nach der Ausbreitung des Islam eben hier im Niltal das erste große islamische Wissenszentrum gegründet wurde. ...
Ziel des vorliegenden Knowledge Flow Paper ist es, den Begriff des Wissenstransfers in spezifischer Weise zugänglich zu machen und die wichtigsten Methoden und Instrumente zur Anwendung innerhalb des Zentrums darzulegen. Besondere Herausforderung ist hierbei, das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen gesellschaftlichem Verfügbarmachen von Lösungen und Kontexten und der Vermittlung von Wissen aus dem (natur-)wissenschaftlichen Zentrum in den gesellschaftlichen Handlungsbereich (Politik, Wirtschaft, Umweltorganisationen etc.) zu verbinden. Somit soll das Paper einen ersten Einstieg in das Thema Wissenstransfer/Transferforschung ermöglichen und dessen Potentiale für BiKF erörtern.
A glance at the Odonata of the Cambodian coastal mountainous regions : end of dry season in 2010

During a visit to the coastal regions of Cambodia within the Provinces of Koh Kong, Kampong Saom, Kampot and Kep within April 12-23, 2010, 59 species of Odonata were found. Of these, 51 were identified, 2 preliminarily identified (1 by exuviae, 1 to a known species with the valid name unresolved), 1 dubious (Aciagrion cf. pallidum), 3 not identified (just visual observations) and 2 seemingly undescribed, namely Burmagomphus sp. and Microgomphus sp. Fourteen species were recorded for the first time for this country, namely Neurobasis chinensis, Dysphaea gloriosa, Euphaea masoni, Onychargia atrocyana, Copera marginipes, Copera vittata, Prodasineura autumnalis Prodasineura verticalis sensu Asahina, 1983, Lathrecista asiatica, Orthetrum chrysis, Rhyothemis obsolescens, Tramea transmarina euryale, Zygonyx iris malayana, Zyxomma petiolatum; taking the current checklist for Cambodia up to 83 species. Some features of the collected specimens relevant to their taxonomy are discussed. Brief field notes are provided and Odonata records enumerated. The habitats and community of Odonata at the Cardamon Mts. foothills at the end of dry season are discussed.
Im folgenden Paper wird die Konzeption des Stakeholder-Involvements für das BiKF-Projekt "Wald- und Forstsysteme der Zukunft" zusammenfassend dargestellt. In Zeiten der Diskussion um Art und Ausmaß der Klimaerwärmung ist es auch in der Forstwirtschaft an der Zeit, sich auf mögliche neue Verhältnisse einzustellen. Dies betrifft vor allem das waldbauliche Vorgehen. Je nach Intensität des Klimawandels müssen neue Konzepte entwickelt werden. Das Projekt hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, zusammen mit Stakeholdern (Anspruchsgruppen) des Waldes naturwissenschaftliche Szenarien zu bewerten und daraus Handlungsempfehlungen abzuleiten. Ausgehend von dieser Forschungsfrage wurde in der ersten Phase dieses Projektes ein Stakeholder-Workshop (WS) durchgeführt. Bei diesem Workshop sollten Themenfelder und aufbauend auf einem Impulsreferat weiterführende Diskussionsfelder erarbeitet werden. Der Auswahl der Stakeholder ging eine Diskursfeldanalyse voraus, aus der eine vorläufige Liste möglicher Anspruchsgruppen abgeleitet wurde. Eine hessenbezogene Auswahl von Repräsentanten dieser Stakeholder wurde über das Forschungsvorhaben informiert und eingeladen. Die meisten der Eingeladenen kamen zum Workshop am 2. Februar 2010. Verschiedene Referate zu den Themen Baumartenwahl und Entscheiden unter Unsicherheit wurden gehalten und das erarbeitete Szenario vorgestellt. Darüber hinaus wurden zwei moderierte Arbeitsgruppen zu verschiedenen Aspekten des Szenarios eingerichtet und Platz für Diskussionen vorgesehen. ...
The Ecosystem Service approach has gained a lot of attention lately, as it interlinks ecosystems with the benefits humans derive from them. The Knowledge Flow paper at hand is giving a first overview of the Ecosystem Service approach. The paper focuses on the basic understanding of the concept and the definition of the term Ecosystem Services. It serves as a starting point for the development of a multiple classification system as a tool for ecosystem service inventories, assessment, and valuation studies. The paper briefly deals with the opportunities and challenges of an economic valuation of ecosystem services and provides the main research questions concerning an ecological assessment of ecosystems services.
Der Verlust biologischer Vielfalt und ökosystemarer Dienstleistungen (ecosystem services, ESS) kann im Wesentlichen auf die nicht-nachhaltige Nutzung der Biosphäre durch den Menschen zurückgeführt werden. Eine Betrachtung der ökonomischen Gründe für die degradierende Nutzung sowie möglicher Instrumente dem Verlust zu begegnen, bilden den Gegenstand dieses Knowledge Flow Papers. Das Paper knüpft damit an das Knowledge Flow Paper Nr. 6 an, indem eine erste Einführung in das Thema Ecosystem Services gegeben wurde, wobei eine Fokussierung auf der Definition und den Kriterien für eine Klassifizierung von ESS lag. Im vorliegenden Paper wird zunächst beschrieben, worin die Ursachen des Verlustes biologischer Vielfalt und ESS aus umweltökonomischer Sicht liegen. Es werden dazu wesentliche ökonomische Problematiken skizziert: der öffentliche Gutscharakter vieler Umweltgüter sowie das Auftreten sog. externer Effekte, die zu Marktversagen führen. In dem darauf folgenden Abschnitt werden umweltpolitische Instrumente als Lösungsansätze für diese Problematiken erörtert. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf den sog. Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES), ein umweltökonomisches Regulationsinstrument, das seit einigen Jahren global zunehmend Anwendung findet. ...
With which political developments is BiKF confronted as a research centre as well as concerning its research and transfer efforts? Are there any hints for emerging research questions that meet practical needs? This paper gives an overview – as of June 2010 – on priority issues in the run-up to CBD’s COP-10, the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which will take place in Nagoya/Japan in October 2010. Highlighted discourse threads are: (1) the state of negotiations for an Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) regime within CBD, (2) European and international preparations for renewing the political objectives for protecting biodiversity (Post-2010 Targets) and (3) the recent decision on an Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). These three threads are selected against the background of an in depth analysis of the discourse field which was carried out in 2008/09 for BiKF. They show how the field progresses and which developments are worth being incorporated into BiKF’s further work. This Knowledge Flow Paper documents the talk given by the author during the second BiKF Retreat, 17–18 July 2010.
Faunistic investigations on adult insects and molecular research on larvae have identified the existence of at least four species of Odonata on the Chatham Islands. The species resemble their New Zealand counterparts, although there are morphological deviations from the typical diagnostic features. Molecular evidence is not concordant with earlier morphological results as far as the genus Xanthocnemis is concerned. Genetic data suggest there are two species on the island while morphological investigations revealed just one. This topic needs further clarification and is given special atiention in the present study. The main aim of the present study is to establish the taxonomic position of Chatham Island Xanthocnemis species and its relation to New Zealand main island fauna. It also provides some data on the biology of the local species and estimates of key demographic parameters (i.e., survival and abundance). The results show that Chatham Islands inhabitants are close morphologically to their New Zealand main island counterparts. Between-island differences in wing area and abdomen-to-body length ratio were found, but were largely atiributable to the harsh environment on the Chatham Islands and its influence on body size. Chatham Xanthocnemis exhibited low survival rates and a great diversity of female colour morphs and certain behavioural traits (like underwater oviposition), which are suspected to be due to a composite influence of low summer temperatures, constant winds, and low pH. Ultimately, the taxonomic status of the Chatham Island Xanthocnemis species needs further confirmation based on molecular analysis of adults.
Five new species of the genus Cotycicuiara Galileo and Martins are described and illustrated: C. oicepe sp. nov., from Trinidad and Tobago; and from Brazil C. multicava sp. nov., (Minas Gerais); C. pertusa sp. nov., (Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina); C. nivaria sp. nov., (Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo); C. chionea sp. nov., (Rio de Janeiro). A revised key to species is provided.
The Odonata fauna of the basin of the river Severskyi Donets in its middle current (Eastern Ukraine)

A list of 57 Odonata species from 108 localities recorded in the basin of the river Severskyi Donets in its middle range (Eastern Ukraine) is provided. This compilation includes literature and museum data as well as results from field surveys realized between 2001 and 2009. Annotations to the history of regional odonate research are made. Brief descriptions of typical dragonfly habitats in the floodplain of Severskyi Donets are presented. Locality wise notes on the reproductive status for most of the species are made.
The checkered beetle Aphelochroa sanguinalis (Westwood) (Coleoptera: Cleridae) is found in savanna and woodland ecosystems of southern and eastern Africa. During surveys for insect floral visitors in the Skukuza Ranger District of Kruger National Park, South Africa, we encountered adults of Aphelochroa sanguinalis on flowers of two tree species, Acacia grandicornuta Gerstner and Acacia tortilis (Forsskal) Hayne (Fabaceae). These two tree species flower in the early rainy season (November-December) and have small white flowers in small round ball-shaped clusters. Adults of phelochroa sanguinalis were not found on flowers of 14 other tree species with different floral structures which were flowering at the same time as Acacia grandicornuta and Acacia tortilis. Predatory, reproductive, and defensive behaviors (including the presence of a chemical defense) are described for Aphelochroa sanguinalis based on field and laboratory observations.
Localities are documented for the milliped Abacion texense (Loomis, 1837) (Callipodida: Abacionidae) whose distribution forms both the northern and southern ordinal limits in the Western Hemisphere. The westernmost component of Abacion Rafinesque, 1820, A. texense is the only milliped species whose range spans the Mississippi and Pecos rivers and the Rio Grande. Distribution extremes are in Hennepin County (Co.), Minnesota, in the north; Terrell and Potter cos., Texas, in the west; Alcorn Co., Mississippi, in the east; and southwestern Tamaulipas, Mexico, in the south. Occurrences are projected for southeastern South Dakota, northwestern Alabama, and the southwestern periphery of Tennessee. The type series of A. texense consists solely of the male holotype, so a neotype will be needed if this individual is ever lost, because no paratypes were officially designated.
Gefängnisfilm

Der Gefängnisfilm bildete sich als Subgenre des klassischen Gangsterfilms parallel zu dessen Entstehung zu Beginn der 1930er Jahre heraus. Die Haftanstalt nimmt in diesem Genre eine ebenso mythische wie notwendige Position ein, da der Gefängnisaufenthalt entweder das Ende einer Gangsterkarriere bedeutet oder eine Fortsetzung dieser Funktion unter veränderten Voraussetzungen. „Gefängnis und Gangster-Existenz bedingen einander so sehr, daß das eine ohne das andere kaum vorstellbar erscheint“, wie es in Kellners Gangsterfilm (1977) heißt. Der Gefängnisfilm ist letztlich ein Gangsterfilm, der seinen Haupthandlungsschauplatz in die Haftanstalt verlegt hat und dort entweder von der Läuterung des Gangsters, von dem Schicksal eines zu Unrecht Verurteilten oder einem Gefängnisaufstand erzählt.
