Prefácio Este esboço gramatical teve origem nos trabalhos da Sociedade Internacional de Linguística (SIL) em Moçambique. O que se procura nesta modesta contribuição ao ambiente sociocultural é apresentar um modelo simples da descrição de aspectos gramaticais para encorajar o uso da língua local e facilitar ao público um melhor acesso a um aspecto da sua rica cultura. O esboço aqui apresentado é uma breve introdução à língua Ekoti que foi produzido durante um seminário linguístico em Julho 2004 no escritório do programa Ekoti em Angoche. Este pequeno estudo segue o padrão das “Notas Gramaticais sobre a Língua Emakhuwa”, o primeiro estudo na série “Monografias Linguísticas Moçambicanas, elaborado em 2003, imprimido em 2006. Queremos endereçar os nossos agradecimentos calorosos ao Governo Distrital do Distrito de Angoche, ao Conselho Municipal, e à Direcção Distrital da Educação e Cultura que facilitam um clima vantajoso para o desenvolvimento e a pesquisa da língua Ekoti. O objectivo deste livro é de inteirar pessoas que já sabem ler e escrever em português para também saberem ler e escrever a língua Kimwani. Em 1988 realizou-se o Primeiro Seminário da Padronizaçâo de Ortografia das línguas Moçambicanas, em Maputo. Naquele Seminário, o alfabeto nas letras latinas da língua Kimwani também foi aprovado. Esta ortografia, com poucas alteraçôes, é a base deste livro. Neste livro tratam-se só as letras que têm expressôes diferentes do que as mesmas letras na língua portuguesa, e certas letras como H, K e W que nâo existem no alfabeto português também sâo introduzidas neste livrinho. Cada página deste livro trata uma letra diferente: primeiro é dado uma lista de palavras em Kimwani com uma certa letra e depois é dada uma explicaçâo como é usada aquela mesma letra na língua portuguesa. No fim de cada página sâo dados exemplos como se escreve aquela letra correctamente, com algumas frases explicativas.

»Wie ist der Spazirgang durch Europa bekommen?« Mit dieser ungewöhnlichen Frage beschließt Johann Wolfgang Goethe seinen Brief, den er am 8. März 1803 an den Dichterfreund Friedrich Schiller richtet. Ungewöhnlich erscheint die Frage deshalb, weil Schiller bekanntermaßen nicht sonderlich viel reiste und die Grenzen des deutschen Territoriums zeitlebens nicht überschritt. Eine Italienische Reise, auf die sich Goethe Ende der 1780er Jahre begibt, oder ein Spaziergang nach Syrakus, wie ihn Johann Gottfried Seume im Jahr 1802 unternimmt, fehlen in Schillers Biographie. Doch in Goethes Brief ist auch von keiner Reise, sondern schlicht von Friedrich Schlegels neuer Zeitschrift Europa die Rede, deren erstes Heft im Februar 1803 erschienen war. Auskunft darüber, wie ihm dieser »Spazirgang […] bekommen« sei, gibt Schiller zwar nicht, aber es ist zu vermuten, dass er ihm sicher nicht missfallen hat. Denn im Beitrag »Literatur« erwähnt Schlegel unter anderem die »Schillerschen Trauerspiele«, die er zu »eine[r] Reihe von Versuchen poetischer Darstellungen auf dem Theater« rechnet, die »hoffen lassen, daß bald ein hinlängliches Fundament vorhanden seyn werde, um unter einer Direction, die der des Weimarischen ähnlich wäre, ein Theater zu gründen, das durchaus nur im Gebiete der schönen Kunst seine Existenz hätte […].« Dass um 1800 eine Zeitschrift gegründet wird, die programmatisch den Namen ›Europa‹ trägt, spricht für die Popularität des europäischen Gedankens, dessen Bedeutungshorizont kultur-, sozial- und ideengeschichtliche Perspektiven vereint.
