This report provides a brief review of the 20th annual meeting of the German Language Branch of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC GLB) held from September 7th to 10th 2015 at ETH (Swiss Technical University) in Zurich, Switzerland. The event was chaired by Inge Werner, Director of the Swiss Centre for Applied Ecotoxicology (Ecotox Centre) Eawag-EPFL, and organized by a team from Ecotox Centre, Eawag, Federal Office of the Environment, Federal Office of Agriculture, and Mesocosm GmbH (Germany). Over 200 delegates from academia, public agencies and private industry of Germany, Switzerland and Austria attended and discussed the current state of science and its application presented in 75 talks and 83 posters. In addition, three invited keynote speakers provided new insights into scientific knowledge ‘brokering’, and—as it was the International Year of Soil—the important role of healthy soil ecosystems. Awards were presented to young scientists for best oral and poster presentations, and for best 2014 master and doctoral theses. In the fish embryo toxicity (FET) test with zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos, 3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) is often employed as a positive control substance. Previous studies have characterized bioconcentration and transformation of 3,4-DCA in this test under flow-through conditions. However, the dynamic changes of chemical concentrations in exposure media and embryos were not studied systematically under the commonly used semi-static exposure conditions in multiwell plates. To overcome these limitations, we conducted semi-static exposures experiments where embryolarval zebrafish were exposed to 0.5, 2.0, and 4.0 mg L−1 of 3,4-DCA for up to 120 hpf, with 24-h renewal intervals. During each renewal interval, concentrations of 3,4-DCA were quantified in water samples at 0, 6, 18, and 24 h using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. Levels of 3,4-DCA in larvae were measured after 120 h exposure. Concentrations of 3,4-DCA in the test vessels decreased rapidly during exposure. Taking these dynamics into account, bioconcentration factors in the present study ranged from 12.9 to 29.8 L kg−1, depending on exposure concentration. In summary, this study contributed to our knowledge of chemical dynamics in the FET test with embryolarval zebrafish, which will aid in defining suitable exposure conditions for future studies.
This article reports on the second Young Environmental Scientists Meeting that was hosted from 28 February to 2 March 2011 by the Institute for Environmental Research at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. This extraordinary meeting was again initiated and organized by the Student Advisory Council under the umbrella of Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Europe. A movie about the meeting and the abstracts of poster and platform presentations are freely available as supplemental material of this article.
Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous and persistent pollutants, and have been detected in a wide variety of media, from soils to aquatic systems. MPs, consisting primarily of polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyacrylamide polymers, have recently been found in 12% of samples of honey collected in Ecuador. Recently, MPs have also been identified in honey bees collected from apiaries in Copenhagen, Denmark, as well as nearby semiurban and rural areas. Given these documented exposures, assessment of their effects is critical for understanding the risks of MP exposure to honey bees. Exposure to polystyrene (PS)-MPs decreased diversity of the honey bee gut microbiota, followed by changes in gene expression related to oxidative damage, detoxification, and immunity. As a result, the aim of this perspective was to investigate whether wide-spread prevalence of MPs might have unintended negative effects on health and fitness of honey bees, as well as to draw the scientific community’s attention to the possible risks of MPs to the fitness of honey bees. Several research questions must be answered before MPs can be considered a potential threat to bees.
So wie sich Orpheus im Hades umwendet, weil er sich versichern will, dass seine Eurydike noch hinter ihm ist, so muss sich heute die Musikpädagogik immer wieder umwenden, um sich zu vergewissern, dass die SchülerInnen ihr folgen. Während Orpheus jedoch die Gattin zum zweiten Mal verliert, besteht im Unterricht die Chance, durch neue Methoden das Interesse für Musik zu stärken. Die Szenische Interpretation von Musiktheater gibt dem „Musiklehrerstand“ die Möglichkeit, durch spielerische Motivation einen Zugang zu den Werken zu schaffen, der eine Zeit lang die „Not und Plage“ der Schule vergessen lässt. SchülerInnen und LehrerInnen verhalten sich anders im Umgang miteinander, werden zu SpielerInnen und SpielleiterInnen, die gemeinsam eine Interpretation der Werke erarbeiten. Wir haben das vorliegende Konzept in verschiedenen SchülerInnen-, StudentInnen- und LehrerInnengruppen durchgeführt - „ein halbes Dutzend Lektionen“ -, bis wir zu dieser Version gekommen sind. Allen Beteiligten gilt unser Dank, besonders den SchülerInnen der Klasse 10a des Goethe-Gymnasiums in Berlin Wilmersdorf und deren Musiklehrer Gero Krüger. In dieser Klasse sind die Fotos entstanden und viele Anregungen der SchülerInnen waren wichtig für die Überarbeitung einzelner Spielverfahren. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Thematik kann schon in der 8. oder 9. Klasse beginnen, je nach Reifegrad der SchülerInnen. In der Oberstufe bietet es sich dann an, einzelne Themen zu vertiefen oder musikalische Analysen im Anschluss an die Methoden zu erarbeiten.
