Background: Gastrulation is a key transition in embryogenesis; it requires self-organized cellular coordination, which has to be both robust to allow efficient development and plastic to provide adaptability. Despite the conservation of gastrulation as a key event in Metazoan embryogenesis, the morphogenetic mechanisms of self-organization (how global order or coordination can arise from local interactions) are poorly understood.
Results: We report a modular structure of cell internalization in Caenorhabditis elegans gastrulation that reveals mechanisms of self-organization. Cells that internalize during gastrulation show apical contractile flows, which are correlated with centripetal extensions from surrounding cells. These extensions converge to seal over the internalizing cells in the form of rosettes. This process represents a distinct mode of monolayer remodeling, with gradual extrusion of the internalizing cells and simultaneous tissue closure without an actin purse-string. We further report that this self-organizing module can adapt to severe topological alterations, providing evidence of scalability and plasticity of actomyosin-based patterning. Finally, we show that globally, the surface cell layer undergoes coplanar division to thin out and spread over the internalizing mass, which resembles epiboly.
Conclusions: The combination of coplanar division-based spreading and recurrent local modules for piecemeal internalization constitutes a system-level solution of gradual volume rearrangement under spatial constraint. Our results suggest that the mode of C. elegans gastrulation can be unified with the general notions of monolayer remodeling and with distinct cellular mechanisms of actomyosin-based morphogenesis.
Activation of TRPC6 channels is essential for lung ischaemia–reperfusion induced oedema in mice

Lung ischaemia–reperfusion-induced oedema (LIRE) is a life-threatening condition that causes pulmonary oedema induced by endothelial dysfunction. Here we show that lungs from mice lacking nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase (Nox2y/−) or the classical transient receptor potential channel 6 (TRPC6−/−) are protected from LIR-induced oedema (LIRE). Generation of chimeric mice by bone marrow cell transplantation and endothelial-specific Nox2 deletion showed that endothelial Nox2, but not leukocytic Nox2 or TRPC6, are responsible for LIRE. Lung endothelial cells from Nox2- or TRPC6-deficient mice showed attenuated ischaemia-induced Ca2+ influx, cellular shape changes and impaired barrier function. Production of reactive oxygen species was completely abolished in Nox2y/− cells. A novel mechanistic model comprising endothelial Nox2-derived production of superoxide, activation of phospholipase C-γ, inhibition of diacylglycerol (DAG) kinase, DAG-mediated activation of TRPC6 and ensuing LIRE is supported by pharmacological and molecular evidence. This mechanism highlights novel pharmacological targets for the treatment of LIRE.
Background: Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI)-imaging is an ultrasound-based elastography method enabling quantitative measurement of tissue stiffness. The aim of the present study was to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of ARFI-imaging for differentiation of thyroid nodules and to compare it to the well evaluated qualitative real-time elastography (RTE).
Methods: ARFI-imaging involves the mechanical excitation of tissue using acoustic pulses to generate localized displacements resulting in shear-wave propagation which is tracked using correlation-based methods and recorded in m/s. Inclusion criteria were: nodules $5 mm, and cytological/histological assessment. All patients received conventional ultrasound, real-time elastography (RTE) and ARFI-imaging.
Results: One-hundred-fifty-eight nodules in 138 patients were available for analysis. One-hundred-thirty-seven nodules were benign on cytology/histology, and twenty-one nodules were malignant. The median velocity of ARFI-imaging in the healthy thyroid tissue, as well as in benign and malignant thyroid nodules was 1.76 m/s, 1.90 m/s, and 2.69 m/s, respectively. While no significant difference in median velocity was found between healthy thyroid tissue and benign thyroid nodules, a significant difference was found between malignant thyroid nodules on the one hand and healthy thyroid tissue (p = 0.0019) or benign thyroid nodules (p = 0.0039) on the other hand. No significant difference of diagnostic accuracy for the diagnosis of malignant thyroid nodules was found between RTE and ARFI-imaging (0.74 vs. 0.69, p = 0.54). The combination of RTE with ARFI did not improve diagnostic accuracy.
Conclusions: ARFI can be used as an additional tool in the diagnostic work up of thyroid nodules with high negative predictive value and comparable results to RTE.
Die Arbeit ist in zwei Teile gegliedert. Der erste Teil behandelt einige naturphilosophische und mathematische Probleme. Es wird außerdem das Pfeil-Paradoxon von Zeno vorgestellt, auf dem die moderne Variante des Quanten-Zeno-Paradoxons basiert. Im zweiten Teil wird zunächst eine allgemeine Analyse des Zerfallsgesetzes instabiler Quantensysteme gegeben. Es ist eine Mischung aus Zusammenfassungen von Reviews und neuen Ideen. Eine wichtige Rolle spielt dabei die Wellenfunktion in Energiedarstellung bzw. deren Betragsquadrat, genannt Energiedichte. Es wird auch auf den Fall eingegangen, wenn ein Quantensystem wiederholten (frequenten) Messungen ausgesetzt ist. Anschließend wird der Quanten-Zeno-Effekt und das Quanten-Zeno-Paradoxon als Folge des Verhaltens der Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit für Zeiten kurz nach der Zustandspräparation beschrieben. Danach wird das Lee-Modell zur Beschreibung eines Teilchenzerfalls vorgestellt. Das Modell beschreibt den Zerfall eines instabilen Teilchens in zwei mögliche Kanäle, d.h. entweder in (genannt) a-Teilchen oder b-Teilchen. Es werden alle wichtigen Funktionen (Zerfallsgesetz, Energiedichte, etc.) analytisch hergeleitet. Es folgen darauf die Ergebnisse der numerischen Auswertung.
To search for novel strategies to enhance the tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-induced apoptosis pathways in glioblastoma, we used the B-cell lymphoma 2/Bcl2-like 2-inhibitor ABT-737. Here we report that ABT-737 and TRAIL cooperate to induce apoptosis in several glioblastoma cell lines in a highly synergistic manner (combination index <0.1). Interestingly, the concerted action of ABT-737 and TRAIL to trigger the accumulation of truncated Bid (tBid) at mitochondrial membranes is identified as a key underlying mechanism. ABT-737 and TRAIL cooperate to cleave BH3-interacting domain death agonist (Bid) into its active fragment tBid, leading to increased accumulation of tBid at mitochondrial membranes. Coinciding with tBid accumulation, the activation of Bcl2-associated X protein (Bax), loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, release of cytochrome-c and second mitochondria-derived activator of caspase (Smac) into the cytosol and caspase activation are strongly increased in cotreated cells. Of note, knockdown of Bid significantly decreases ABT-737- and TRAIL-mediated Bax activation and apoptosis. Also, caspase-3 silencing reduces ABT-737- and TRAIL-induced Bid cleavage and apoptosis, indicating that a caspase-3-driven, mitochondrial feedback loop contributes to Bid processing. Importantly, ABT-737 profoundly enhances TRAIL-triggered apoptosis in primary cultured glioblastoma cells derived from tumor material, underlining the clinical relevance. Also, ABT-737 acts in concert with TRAIL to suppress tumor growth in an in vivo glioblastoma model. In conclusion, the rational combination of ABT-737 and TRAIL cooperates to trigger tBid mitochondrial accumulation and apoptosis. This approach presents a promising strategy for targeting the apoptosis pathways in glioblastoma, which warrants further investigation.

A new polymorph of the title compound, [Pd2(C8H18P)2(C8H19P)2], has been found. It belongs to the triclinic P-1 space group, whereas the known form [Leoni, Sommovigo, Pasquali, Sabatino & Braga (1992 [triangle]), J. Organomet. Chem. 423, 263–270] crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group. The title compound features a dinuclear palladium complex with a planar central Pd2(μ-P)2 core (r.m.s. deviation = 0.003 Å). The Pd—Pd distance of 2.5988 (5) Å is within the range of a PdI—PdI bond. The molecules of both polymorphs are located on a crystallographic centre of inversion. The molecular conformations of the two polymorphs are essentially identical. The crystal packing patterns, on the other hand, are slightly different.
It is widely believed that chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken at zero temperature in the strong coupling limit of staggered fermions, for any number of colors and flavors. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that this conventional wisdom, based on a mean-field analysis, is wrong. For sufficiently many fundamental flavors, chiral symmetry is restored via a bulk, first-order transition. This chirally symmetric phase appears to be analytically connected with the expected conformal window of manyflavor continuum QCD. We perform simulations in the chirally symmetric phase at zero quark mass for various system sizes L, and measure the torelon mass and the Dirac spectrum. We find that all observables scale with L, which is hence the only infrared length scale. Thus, the strong-coupling chirally restored phase appears as a convenient laboratory to study IR-conformality. Finally, we present a conjecture for the phase diagram of lattice QCD as a function of the bare coupling and the number of quark flavors.
Small RNAs have been implicated in numerous cellular processes, including effects on chromatin structure and the repression of transposons. We describe the generation of a small RNA response at DNA ends in Drosophila that is analogous to the recently reported double-strand break (DSB)-induced RNAs or Dicer- and Drosha-dependent small RNAs in Arabidopsis and vertebrates. Active transcription in the vicinity of the break amplifies this small RNA response, demonstrating that the normal messenger RNA contributes to the endogenous small interfering RNAs precursor. The double-stranded RNA precursor forms with an antisense transcript that initiates at the DNA break. Breaks are thus sites of transcription initiation, a novel aspect of the cellular DSB response. This response is specific to a double-strand break since nicked DNA structures do not trigger small RNA production. The small RNAs are generated independently of the exact end structure (blunt, 3′- or 5′-overhang), can repress homologous sequences in trans and may therefore—in addition to putative roles in repair—exert a quality control function by clearing potentially truncated messages from genes in the vicinity of the break.
Fundamental rights protection, once a side show, has become important for the EU, as proved by the newfound treaty recognition of the EU fundamental rights charter (CFREU), and the upcoming accession to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). At the same time the fundamental rights situation in a considerable number of Member States is an increasing cause for concern. This has mostly been illustrated with reference to minorities and asylum seekers. However, recent reports of organizations like the Council of Europe, the OSCE and various NGOs have also highlighted serious problems with regard to media freedom, such as overt political influence, media concentration, disproportionate sanctions on journalists, misuse of counter-terrorism legislation against the press, deficient protection of journalistic sources and failure to investigate violence against reporters. ...
The transitional nucleus 154Gd was investigated using a combination of a photon scattering experiment and a γγ-coincidence study following the β decay of 154Tb. A novel decay channel from the scissors mode to the band head of the β-band was observed. Its transition strength B(M1; 1sc+ → 0β+) was determined. An IBM-2 calculation reveals a correlation of this decay channel and the shape phase transition between spherical and deformed nuclei.
Pattern recognition approaches to the analysis of neuroimaging data have brought new applications such as the classification of patients and healthy controls within reach. In our view, the reliance on expensive neuroimaging techniques which are not well tolerated by many patient groups and the inability of most current biomarker algorithms to accommodate information about prior class frequencies (such as a disorder's prevalence in the general population) are key factors limiting practical application. To overcome both limitations, we propose a probabilistic pattern recognition approach based on cheap and easy-to-use multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measurements. We show the validity of our method by applying it to data from healthy controls (n = 14) enabling differentiation between the conditions of a visual checkerboard task. Second, we show that high-accuracy single subject classification of patients with schizophrenia (n = 40) and healthy controls (n = 40) is possible based on temporal patterns of fNIRS data measured during a working memory task. For classification, we integrate spatial and temporal information at each channel to estimate overall classification accuracy. This yields an overall accuracy of 76% which is comparable to the highest ever achieved in biomarker-based classification of patients with schizophrenia. In summary, the proposed algorithm in combination with fNIRS measurements enables the analysis of sub-second, multivariate temporal patterns of BOLD responses and high-accuracy predictions based on low-cost, easy-to-use fNIRS patterns. In addition, our approach can easily compensate for variable class priors, which is highly advantageous in making predictions in a wide range of clinical neuroimaging applications. Many hominin species are best physically represented and understood by the sum of their dental morphologies. Generally, taxonomic affinities and evolutionary trends in development (ontogeny) and morphology (phylogeny) can be deduced from dental analyses. More specifically, the study of dental remains can yield a wealth of information on many facets of hominin evolution, life history, physiology and ecological adaptation; in short, the organisms paleobiomics. Functionally, teeth present information about dietary preferences, that is, the dietary niche in ecological context and, in turn, masticatory function. As the amount and types of information that can be gleaned from 2-dimensional tooth measurement exhaust themselves, 3-dimensional microscopic modeling and analysis presents a largely fertile ground for reexamination and reinterpretation of dental characteristics (Bromage et al., 2005). As such, a novel, non-destructive approach has been developed which combines the work of two established technologies (confocal microscopy and 3D modeling) adapted specifically for the purpose of mineralized tissue imaging. Through this method, 3D functional masticatory and therefore occlusal molar microwear is able to be visualized, quantified and comparatively analyzed to assess dietary preference in Javanese Homo erectus. This method differs from other microwear investigative techniques (defining 'pits'- vs- 'scratches', microtexture analysis etc.) in that it defines a molars masticatory microwear functional interactions in 3-dimensions as its baseline dataset for further interpretations and analyses. Due to poor specimen collection techniques employed during the first half of the 20th century, the very complex geologic nature of the Sangiran Dome and disagreements over its chronostratigraphy, only very few scientific works have addressed the Sangiran 7 (S7) Homo erectus molar collection (n=25) (e.g. Grine and Franzen, 1994; Kaifu, 2006). Grine and Franzen's (1994) work was a predominantly qualitative initial assessment of the specimens and identified five specimens that might better be ascribed to a fossil pongid rather than H. erectus. They also noted several molars to which tooth position (M1 or M2) was unable to be ascribed (Grine and Franzen, 1994). Kaifu (2006) comparatively examined crown sizes in several S7 molars.
The Sangiran 7 collection originates from two distinct geologic horizons: ten from the older Sangiran Formation (S7a, ~1.7 to 1.0mya) and fifteen from the younger, overlying Bapang Formation (S7b, ~1.0 to .7mya). During this million year period, Java was connected to the mainland during various glacio-eustatic low-stands in sea level. These mainland connections varied in size, extent, climatic condition and therefore in faunal and floral composition. As the S7 sample may be representative of the earliest Homo erectus migrants into Java and spans long durations of occupation, its investigation yields potential to understand the various influences climatic and ecogeographic fluctuations had on these populations. Since the sample consists only of teeth, an ecodietary approach has been deemed the most logical and appropriate investigative approach. Questions regarding the intra- and inter- S7 sample
relationships will also be addressed.
By comparing various aspects of the H. erectus dentition against that of hunter/ gatherer's (H/G) whose diet is known, functional dietary similarity can be directly correlated. Thus a comparative molar sample consisting of the below historic hunter/ gather's (n=63) has been included in order to assess H. erectus's diet in ecological context: Inuit (n=9), Pacific Northwest Tribes (n=11), Fuegians (n=11), Australian Aborigines (n=12) and Bushman (n=20). Methodologically, this approach produces a 3D facet microwear vector (fmv) signature for each molar which can then be compared for statistical similarity.
Microwear (and, as such, the fmv signatures) was defined by the regular, parallel striations found on specific cusp facets known to arise from patterned, directional masticatory movements. This differs significantly from post-mortem or taphonomic microwear which produces striations at irregular angles on multiple, non-masticatory surfaces (Peuch et al.1985, Teaford, 1988). A 'match value' is produced to determine the similarity of two molars fmv's. The 'match values' are ranked (high to low) and these rankings are used to statistically analyze and infer dietary preference: between Sangiran 7 (as an entire sample) compared against that of the historic hunter/ gatherer H. sapiens whose diet and ecogeography is known; within S7a and S7b and then among the S7 sample (eg. S7a-vs-S7b); whether the purported Pongo molars actually affiliate well with H. erectus, the hunter-gatherer's or if they demonstrate distinctly different fmv signatures altogether; whether fmv signatures are useful in distinguishing molars whose tooth position is in doubt (eg. M1 or M2).
When compared against individual H/G molars, the results show that Sangiran 7 H. erectus most closely correlates with Bushmen across all areas of fmv signature analysis. However, within broader dietary categories (yearly reliant on proteinaceous foods; seasonally reliant on proteinaceous foods; not reliant on proteinaceous foods), it was found that H. erectus most closely allied with the two hunter/ gatherer subpopulations associated with the 'Seasonally reliant on proteinaceous foods' (Australian Aboriginals and Pacific Northwest Tribes). There was also evidence for dietary change or specialization over time. As the environment changed during occupation by the earlier Sangiran to the later Bapang individuals, the dietary preference shifted from a focus on vegetative foods to a diet much more inclusive of proteinaceous resources.
These results are considered logical within the larger ecogeographic and chronostratigraphic context of the Sangiran Dome during the Pleistocene. However, a larger sample would be needed to confirm this. Although general dietary preferences can be drawn from this method, it is not possible at present to define specific foods consumed on a daily basis (eg. tubers or tortoise meat).
Out of the five specimens possibly allied with Pongo, S7-14 matched at the 'high' designation with a hunter/ gatherer, S7-62 matched 'moderately', S7-20 matched 'low' while the remaining two were not able to be matched with any other teeth for various reasons. Although designation to Pongo cannot be ruled on at this time using this method, it does demonstrate that at least two of the teeth correlate well with various hunter/ gatherer's who do not share dietary similarity with Pongo. This suggests their designation as Pongo should be more closely reevaluated. As for the four specimens whose tooth position was unsure, S7-14 matched 'highly' with 1st molars, S7-62 and S7-78 matched 'moderately' with 2nd and 1st molars respectively while S7-20 only matched at the 'low' designation. Although this approach is still exploratory, it adds another analytical tool for use in defining tooth position.
In sum, this method has demonstrated its usefulness in defining and functionally analyzing a novel 3D molar microwear dataset to interpret dietary preference. Future work would include a pan- H. erectus molar sample in order to illuminate broader populational, taxonomic and dietary correlations within and amoung all H. erectus specimens. A larger, more heterogenous historic H/G sample would also be included in order to provide a wider dietary comparative population. This method can be further extended to include and compare any and all hominins as well as any organism which produces micro wear upon it molars. Also, the data obtained and resultant fmv signature diagrams have the potential to be incorporated into 3D VR reconstructions of mandibular movement thus recreating mastication in extinct organisms and leading to more robust anatomical and physiological investigations especially when viewed in the context of larger environmental conditions or changes.
We describe the frog species Diasporus citrinobapheussp. n. from the Cordillera Central of western Panama. The new species differs from all other species in its genus in coloration, disk cover and disk pad shape, skin texture, advertisement call, and size. It is most similar to Diasporus tigrillo, from which it differs in dorsal skin texture, relative tibia length, number of vomerine teeth, ventral coloration, dorsal markings, and relative tympanum size, and to Diasporus gularis, from which it can be distinguished by the lack of membranes between the toes, adult size, posterior thigh coloration, and position of the choanae. We provide data on morpho- logy, vocalization, and distribution of the new species, as well as brief information on its natural history.
In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, the state of macroeconomic modeling and the use of macroeconomic models in policy analysis has come under heavy criticism. Macroeconomists in academia and policy institutions have been blamed for relying too much on a particular class of macroeconomic models. This paper proposes a comparative approach to macroeconomic policy analysis that is open to competing modeling paradigms. Macroeconomic model comparison projects have helped produce some very influential insights such as the Taylor rule. However, they have been infrequent and costly, because they require the input of many teams of researchers and multiple meetings to obtain a limited set of comparative findings. This paper provides a new approach that enables individual researchers to conduct model comparisons easily, frequently, at low cost and on a large scale. Using this approach a model archive is built that includes many well-known empirically estimated models that may be used for quantitative analysis of monetary and fiscal stabilization policies. A computational platform is created that allows straightforward comparisons of models’ implications. Its application is illustrated by comparing different monetary and fiscal policies across selected models. Researchers can easily include new models in the data base and compare the effects of novel extensions to established benchmarks thereby fostering a comparative instead of insular approach to model development.

The lichen-forming genus Pertusaria under its current circumscription is polyphyletic and its phylogenetic affiliations are uncertain. Here we study the species of the genera Pertusaria and Varicellaria which containlecanoric acid as major constituent, have disciform apothecia, strongly amyloid asci, non-amyloid hymenial gel, 1-2-spored asci, and 1- or 2-celled ascospores with thick, 1-layered walls. We infer phylogenetic relationships using maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses based on four molecular loci (mtSSU, nuLSU rDNA, and the protein-coding, nuclear RPB1 and MCM7 genes). Our results show that the lecanoric acid-containing species form a well-supported, monophyletic group, which is only distantly related to Pertusaria s.str. The phylogenetic position of this clade is unclear, but placement in Pertusaria s.str. is rejected using alternative hypothesis testing. The circumscription of the genus Varicellaria is enlarged to also include species with non-septate ascospores. Seven species are accepted in the genus: Varicellaria culbersonii (Vězda) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria hemisphaerica (Flörke) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria kasandjeffii (Szatala) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria lactea (L.) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria philippina (Vain.) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov., Varicellaria rhodocarpa (Körb.) Th. Fr., and Varicellaria velata (Turner) Schmitt & Lumbsch, comb. nov. A key to the species of Varicellaria is provided.
Tumor progression and pregnancy share many common features, such as immune tolerance and invasion. The invasion of trophoblasts in the placenta into the uterine wall is essential for fetal development, and is thus precisely regulated. Its deregulation has been implicated in preeclampsia, a leading cause for maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. Pathogenesis of preeclampsia remains to be defined. Microarray-based gene profiling has been widely used for identifying genes responsible for preeclampsia. In this review, we have summarized the recent data from the microarray studies with preeclamptic placentas. Despite the complex of gene signatures, suggestive of the heterogeneity of preeclampsia, these studies identified a number of differentially expressed genes associated with preeclampsia. Interestingly, most of them have been reported to be tightly involved in tumor progression. We have discussed these interesting genes and analyzed their potential molecular functions in preeclampsia, compared with their roles in malignancy development. Further investigations are warranted to explore the involvement in molecular network of each identified gene, which may provide not only novel strategies for prevention and therapy for preeclampsia but also a better understanding of cancer cells. The trophoblastic cells, with their capacity for proliferation and differentiation, apoptosis and survival, migration, angiogenesis and immune modulation by exploiting similar molecular pathways, make them a compelling model for cancer research.
Background: To perform a comprehensive study on the relationship between vitamin D metabolism and the response to interferon-α-based therapy of chronic hepatitis C.
Methodology/Principal Findings: Associations between a functionally relevant polymorphism in the gene encoding the vitamin D 1α-hydroxylase (CYP27B1-1260 rs10877012) and the response to treatment with pegylated interferon-α (PEG-IFN-α) and ribavirin were determined in 701 patients with chronic hepatitis C. In addition, associations between serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25[OH]D3) and treatment outcome were analysed. CYP27B1-1260 rs10877012 was found to be an independent predictor of sustained virologic response (SVR) in patients with poor-response IL28B genotypes (15% difference in SVR for rs10877012 genotype AA vs. CC, p = 0.02, OR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.061–2.188), but not in patients with favourable IL28B genotype. Patients with chronic hepatitis C showed a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency (25[OH]D3<20 ng/mL) during all seasons, but 25(OH)D3 serum levels were not associated with treatment outcome.
Conclusions/Significance: Our study suggests a role of bioactive vitamin D (1,25[OH]2D3, calcitriol) in the response to treatment of chronic hepatitis C. However, serum concentration of the calcitriol precursor 25(OH)D3 is not a suitable predictor of treatment outcome.
Background: The human ATP-binding cassette, subfamily B, member 11 (ABCB11) gene encodes the bile salt export pump, which is exclusively expressed at the canalicular membrane of hepatocytes. A frequent variant in the coding region, c.1331 T > C, leading to the amino acid exchange p.V444A, has been associated with altered serum bile salt levels in healthy individuals and predisposes homozygous carriers of the [C] allele for obstetric cholestasis. Recently, elevated bile salt levels were shown to be significantly associated with rates and risk of cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection treated with pegylated interferon-alpha2 and ribavirin, suggesting a potential role for bile salt levels in HCV treatment outcomes and in the fibrogenic evolution of HCV-related liver disease. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible association of ABCB11 c.1331 T > C with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and fibrosis stages as assessed by non-invasive transient elastography in a German cohort of patients.
Methods: ABCB11 c.1331 T > C genotype was determined by allelic discrimination assay in 649 HCV infected cases and 413 controls. Overall, 444 cases were staged for fibrotic progression by measurement of liver stiffness.
Results: Homo- or heterozygous presence of the frequent [C] allele was associated with HCV positivity (OR = 1.41, CI = 1.02 - 1.95, p = 0.037). No association was detectable between the ABCB11 c.1331 T > C genotype and increased liver stiffness.
Conclusions: Our data confirm that homozygous presence of the major [C] allele of ABCB11 c.1331 T > C is a genetic susceptibility factor for HCV infection, but not for liver fibrosis.
O texto trata da relação entre esfera pública e meios de comunicação de massa, no corpus bibliográfico de Jürgen Habermas, nestes 50 anos que nos separam de Strukturwandel der Öffentlichkeit (1962). O objetivo do texto é mostrar que, diferente de alguns estudos críticos, não se trata de uma lacuna investigativa - ausência, abandono ou não exploração do tema - , mas de uma abordagem secundária, implícita; que a abordagem secundária do tema está relacionada com a posição pessimista original de Habermas acerca da influência negativa dos meios de comunicação de massa, na despolitização da esfera pública; que o pessimismo de Habermas sobre os efeitos negativos dos meios de comunicação de massa mantém uma conexão interna com a orientação original da crítica da cultura de massa de Adorno. Isso significa que, apesar das reformulações e novos diagnósticos, a posição cética de Habermas quanto ao potencial democrático dos meios de comunicação de massa na repolitização da esfera pública parece não ter mudado em seus fundamentos, nestes 50 anos.
This paper studies constrained portfolio problems that may involve constraints on the probability or the expected size of a shortfall of wealth or consumption. Our first contribution is that we solve the problems by dynamic programming, which is in contrast to the existing literature that applies the martingale method. More precisely, we construct the non-separable value function by formalizing the optimal constrained terminal wealth to be a (conjectured) contingent claim on the optimal non-constrained terminal wealth. This is relevant by itself, but also opens up the opportunity to derive new solutions to constrained problems. As a second contribution, we thus derive new results for non-strict constraints on the shortfall of inter¬mediate wealth and/or consumption.
The regulation of cellular copper homeostasis is crucial in biology. Impairments lead to severe dysfunctions and are known to affect aging and development. Previously, a loss-of-function mutation in the gene encoding the copper-sensing and copper-regulated transcription factor GRISEA of the filamentous fungus Podospora anserina was reported to lead to cellular copper depletion and a pleiotropic phenotype with hypopigmentation of the mycelium and the ascospores, affected fertility and increased lifespan by approximately 60% when compared to the wild type. This phenotype is linked to a switch from a copper-dependent standard to an alternative respiration leading to both a reduced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). We performed a genome-wide comparative transcriptome analysis of a wild-type strain and the copper-depleted grisea mutant. We unambiguously assigned 9,700 sequences of the transcriptome in both strains to the more than 10,600 predicted and annotated open reading frames of the P. anserina genome indicating 90% coverage of the transcriptome. 4,752 of the transcripts differed significantly in abundance with 1,156 transcripts differing at least 3-fold. Selected genes were investigated by qRT-PCR analyses. Apart from this general characterization we analyzed the data with special emphasis on molecular pathways related to the grisea mutation taking advantage of the available complete genomic sequence of P. anserina. This analysis verified but also corrected conclusions from earlier data obtained by single gene analysis, identified new candidates of factors as part of the cellular copper homeostasis system including target genes of transcription factor GRISEA, and provides a rich reference source of quantitative data for further in detail investigations. Overall, the present study demonstrates the importance of systems biology approaches also in cases were mutations in single genes are analyzed to explain the underlying mechanisms controlling complex biological processes like aging and development.
Uncalibrated semi-invasive continous monitoring of cardiac index (CI) has recently gained increasing interest. The aim of the present study was to compare the accuracy of CI determination based on arterial waveform analysis with transpulmonary thermodilution. Fifty patients scheduled for elective coronary surgery were studied after induction of anaesthesia and before and after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), respectively. Each patient was monitored with a central venous line, the PiCCO system, and the FloTrac/Vigileo-system. Measurements included CI derived by transpulmonary thermodilution and uncalibrated semi-invasive pulse contour analysis. Percentage changes of CI were calculated. There was a moderate, but significant correlation between pulse contour CI and thermodilution CI both before (r(2) = 0.72, P < 0.0001) and after (r(2) = 0.62, P < 0.0001) CPB, with a percentage error of 31% and 25%, respectively. Changes in pulse contour CI showed a significant correlation with changes in thermodilution CI both before (r(2) = 0.52, P < 0.0001) and after (r(2) = 0.67, P < 0.0001) CPB. Our findings demonstrated that uncalibrated semi-invasive monitoring system was able to reliably measure CI compared with transpulmonary thermodilution in patients undergoing elective coronary surgery. Furthermore, the semi-invasive monitoring device was able to track haemodynamic changes and trends.
Background and Aims: Chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major health issue worldwide. Recently, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DP locus were identified to be associated with HBV infection in Asian populations. Most significant associations were observed for the A alleles of HLA-DPA1 rs3077 and HLA-DPB1 rs9277535, which conferred a decreased risk for HBV infection. We assessed the implications of these variants for HBV infection in Caucasians.
Methods: Two HLA-DP gene variants (rs3077 and rs9277535) were analyzed for associations with persistent HBV infection and with different clinical outcomes, i.e., inactive HBsAg carrier status versus progressive chronic HBV (CHB) infection in Caucasian patients (n = 201) and HBsAg negative controls (n = 235).
Results: The HLA-DPA1 rs3077 C allele was significantly associated with HBV infection (odds ratio, OR = 5.1, 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.9–13.7; p = 0.00093). However, no significant association was seen for rs3077 with progressive CHB infection versus inactive HBsAg carrier status (OR = 2.7, 95% CI: 0.6–11.1; p = 0.31). In contrast, HLA-DPB1 rs9277535 was not associated with HBV infection in Caucasians (OR = 0.8, 95% CI: 0.4–1.9; p = 1).
Conclusions: A highly significant association of HLA-DPA1 rs3077 with HBV infection was observed in Caucasians. However, as a differentiation between different clinical courses of HBV infection was not possible, knowledge of the HLA-DPA1 genotype cannot be translated into personalized anti-HBV therapy approaches.
There is an increasing interest in incorporating significant citizen participation into the law-making process by developing the use of the internet in the public sphere. However, no well-accepted e-participation model has prevailed. This article points out that, to be successful, we need critical reflection of legal theory and we also need further institutional construction based on the theoretical reflection.
Contemporary dominant legal theories demonstrate too strong an internal legal point of view to empower the informal, social normative development on the internet. Regardless of whether we see the law as a body of rules or principles, the social aspect is always part of people’s background and attracts little attention. In this article, it is advocated that the procedural legal paradigm advanced by Jürgen Habermas represents an important breakthrough in this regard.
Further, Habermas’s co-originality thesis reveals a neglected internal relationship between public autonomy and private autonomy. I believe the co-originality theory provides the essential basis on which a connecting infrastructure between the legal and the social could be developed. In terms of the development of the internet to include the public sphere, co-originality can also help us direct the emphasis on the formation of public opinion away from the national legislative level towards the local level; that is, the network of governance.1
This article is divided into two sections. The focus of Part One is to reconstruct the co-originality thesis (section 2, 3). This paper uses the application of discourse in the adjudication theory of Habermas as an example. It argues that Habermas would be more coherent, in terms of his insistence on real communication in his discourse theory, if he allowed his judges to initiate improved interaction with the society. This change is essential if the internal connection between public autonomy and private autonomy in the sense of court adjudication is to be truly enabled.
In order to demonstrate such improved co-original relationships, the empowering character of the state-made law is instrumental in initiating the mobilization of legal intermediaries, both individual and institutional. A mutually enhanced relationship is thus formed; between the formal, official organization and its governance counterpart aided by its associated ‘local’ public sphere. Referring to Susan Sturm, the Harris v Forklift Systems Inc. (1930) decision of the Supreme Court of the United States in the field of sexual harassment is used as an example.
Using only one institutional example to illustrate how the co-originality thesis can be improved is not sufficient to rebuild the thesis but this is as much as can be achieved in this article.
In Part Two, the paper examines, still at the institutional level, how Sturm develops an overlooked sense of impartiality, especially in the derivation of social norms; i.e. multi-partiality instead of neutral detachment (section 4). These two ideas should be combined as the criterion for impartiality to evaluate the legitimacy of the joint decision-making processes of both the formal official organization and ‘local’ public sphere.
Sturm’s emphasis on the deployment of intermediaries, both institutional and individual, can also enlighten the discourse theory. Intermediaries are essential for connecting the disassociated social networks, especially when a breakdown of communication occurs due to a lack of data, information, knowledge, or disparity of value orientation, all of which can affect social networks. If intermediaries are used, further communication will not be blocked as a result of the lack of critical data, information, knowledge or misunderstandings due to disparity of value orientation or other causes.
The institutional impact of the newly constructed co-originality thesis is also discussed in Part Two. Landwehr’s work on institutional design and assessment for deliberative interaction is first discussed. This article concludes with an indication of how the ‘local’ public sphere, through e-rulemaking or online dispute resolution, for example, can be constructed in light of the discussion of this article.

Dieser Kontrast verweist auf die sprichwörtliche Macht der Bilder, welche die jeweiligen Bedingungen von Handlungsmöglichkeiten vorstrukturieren.
The Wood-Ljungdahl pathway of anaerobic CO(2) fixation with hydrogen as reductant is considered a candidate for the first life-sustaining pathway on earth because it combines carbon dioxide fixation with the synthesis of ATP via a chemiosmotic mechanism. The acetogenic bacterium Acetobacterium woodii uses an ancient version of the pathway that has only one site to generate the electrochemical ion potential used to drive ATP synthesis, the ferredoxin-fueled, sodium-motive Rnf complex. However, hydrogen-based ferredoxin reduction is endergonic, and how the steep energy barrier is overcome has been an enigma for a long time. We have purified a multimeric [FeFe]-hydrogenase from A. woodii containing four subunits (HydABCD) which is predicted to have one [H]-cluster, three [2Fe2S]-, and six [4Fe4S]-clusters consistent with the experimental determination of 32 mol of Fe and 30 mol of acid-labile sulfur. The enzyme indeed catalyzed hydrogen-based ferredoxin reduction, but required NAD(+) for this reaction. NAD(+) was also reduced but only in the presence of ferredoxin. NAD(+) and ferredoxin reduction both required flavin. Spectroscopic analyses revealed that NAD(+) and ferredoxin reduction are strictly coupled and that they are reduced in a 1:1 stoichiometry. Apparently, the multimeric hydrogenase of A. woodii is a soluble energy-converting hydrogenase that uses electron bifurcation to drive the endergonic ferredoxin reduction by coupling it to the exergonic NAD(+) reduction.

Oktober 2011 veranstalteten Sybille Steinbacher vom Institut für Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien und Raphael Gross vom Fritz Bauer Institut, Geschichte und Wirkung des Holocaust Frankfurt/Main in Kooperation mit der Österreichischen HochschülerInnenschaft die Tagung "Der Holocaust und die Geschichte der Völkermorde im 20. Jahrhundert. Zur Bedeutung und Reichweite des Vergleichs". Im Mittelpunkt der Wiener Tagung standen Fragen nach der Entwicklung des Topos "Singularität des Holocaust", der Einordnung des nationalsozialistischen Judenmords in die Reihe der Völkermorde und dessen Vergleichbarkeit, beispielsweise mit den stalinistischen Verbrechen. Weiters wurde diskutiert, ob und wie den Zeitgenossen des "Dritten Reichs" die Gewaltexzesse gegen Zivilisten und ethnische Minderheiten zur Zeit des Ersten Weltkriegs bewusst waren. Ziel war es, die Bezüge der noch relativ jungen Komparativen Genozidforschung und der Holocaustforschung zu beleuchten, ferner den Merkmalen "ethnischer Säuberungen" nachzugehen und die Verbrechensgeschichte des letzten Jahrhunderts an ausgewählten Beispielen, wie dem Völkermord an den Armeniern, zu analysieren. ...
Bericht der Organisatoren: Die Tagung wollte ein Zeichen setzen: ein Zeichen, dass es geboten sei, sich erneut der Cotton Genesis und ihrem ausdrücklichsten mittelalterlichen Nachfahren, den Schöpfungsmosaiken der Vorhalle von San Marco in Venedig, zuzuwenden. Die Diskussion dieser Verbindung von frühchristlichen Illuminationen, die nur noch in wenigen verkohlten Fragmenten überliefert sind, mit den mittelalterlichen Mosaiken ist seit der Entdeckung durch Johan Jakob Tikkanen 1889 geführt worden. Sie kam 1986 mit der Edition der Cotton Genesis durch Kurt Weitzmann und Herbert Kessler zu einem vorläufigen Abschluss. Die soziale Rolle der Prostitution kann als Ausgangspunkt dienen, um Rückschlüsse auf den Stand der Geschlechterhierarchie in einer Gesellschaft zu ziehen. In vielen historischen Studien wurde Prostitution als Symbol patriarchalischer Unterdrückung interpretiert; die Stigmatisierung, Kontrolle bzw. Verfolgung von Prostituierten standen stellvertretend für die Ausgrenzung und Unterdrückung von Frauen allgemein. Nach Ansicht von Victoria Harris geriet das Individuum dabei aus dem Blick. Insbesondere in feministischen Studien sei die Geschichte der Prostituierten als eine Geschichte von Opfern aufgeschrieben worden. Diese Sichtweise werde der Komplexität der einzelnen Lebensgeschichten aber nicht gerecht. Nicht die Diskurse um Prostitution will Harris daher erfassen, nicht die Idee oder Bedeutung von Prostitution, sondern das Individuum im gesellschaftlichen Kontext: die Lebenserfahrung der Prostituierten. ...
Fragen nach der Schrift und ihrem Gebrauch zählen zu den "Dauerbrennern" der mediävistischen Forschung: Mehrere Sonderforschungsbereiche widmeten und widmen sich dem Thema, auch wenn sie den Zugang aus unterschiedlichen Richtungen suchen. In der Vielzahl der hier produzierten Studien positioniert sich der anzuzeigende Band durch den Fokus auf Phänomene des Rechts, sowie vor allem durch den im Titel stehenden Begriff der "Performanz". Fasst man letzteren als Verweis auf den handlungsbezogenen Charakter des Agierens – hier also bei rechtsbezogenen Praktiken –, so ist eine wertvolle Ergänzung zu den etablierten Forschungen über "rituelles Handeln" zu erhoffen. Schon M. Mosterts Einleitung (S. 1–10) relativiert allerdings allzu überzogene Erwartungen: Zwar problematisiert der Autor nicht nur die Begriffe "legal" und "law", deren reflektierte Anwendung auf vormoderne Verhältnisse er fordert, sondern auch jenen der "performance". Die Differenz zum Ritualbegriff markieren aber lediglich knappe Verweise auf die "performativen Sprechakte" nach Austin und auf den "Spielcharakter" (im Sinne Huizingas) rechtlichen Handelns in der Vormoderne (S. 6–9). ...
Was hat dieses Buch über einen wenig bekannten Herzog von Bourbon, von dem selbst die französische Geschichtsschreibung bislang eher den Eindruck einer "personnalité parfois effacée" (S. 218) vermittelte, einem deutschen Publikum – und das gilt selbst für die kleine Zunft der Mittelalterhistoriker – schon groß zu sagen? Allenfalls Johanns II. (1456–1488) im Obertitel angesprochene Konfrontation mit Ludwig XI. lässt vielleicht etwas aufmerken, doch gerade dieser König inszenierte so viele Prozesse gegen adelige Gegner (vgl. S. 234 Anm. 2; dem Verfahren gegen Ludwig V. Luxemburg, Graf von St-Pol, galten in den letzten Jahren gleich mehrere Arbeiten: S. 2 Anm. 5), dass man geneigt ist, die Studie nicht zur Kenntnis zu nehmen, denn: "Noch ein Prozess mehr oder weniger, was soll’s?" Doch dieser Prozeß macht, wie noch darzulegen, schon einen erheblichen Unterschied aus; zudem rührt er bei aller spezifisch französischen Grundierung an grundsätzlichen Fragen der Souveränität der Krongewalt und deren Verhältnis zu den Fürstentümern; Fragen, die, was die Machtgewichtung anbelangt, zwar unter eher umgekehrten Vorzeichen, so doch prinzipiell in ähnlicher Weise das deutsche Spätmittelalter durchziehen – Kenntnisnahme ist mithin durchaus angesagt. Es ist so eine Sache mit der Gattung der "gesammelten Aufsätze": Sie bieten in praktischer Form thematisch zusammenhängende Beiträge eines Autors, die über einen längeren Zeitraum entstanden und an unterschiedlichen Orten publiziert wurden. Im günstigsten Fall entfalten die Texte durch den unmittelbaren Dialog ein neues Panorama, das die Genese und Ausarbeitung eines Forschungsbereichs widerspiegelt. Stets besteht aber auch die Gefahr, Texte neu zirkulieren zu lassen, deren fruchtbarste Zeit doch in der Vergangenheit liegt. Die Lektüre eines solchen Bandes ist daher nicht nur mit der (Wieder-)Entdeckung alter und neuer Perspektiven und Materialien verbunden, sondern fordert zugleich zur Reflexion über die Gattung selbst auf. Das gilt umso mehr in einer Zeit, in der die Möglichkeit zur Erstellung "virtueller Dossiers" bestünde, die nicht notwendigerweise als gedrucktes Buch vorliegen müssen. ...
Der umfangreiche Aufsatzband fokussiert die historischen Zäsuren, die die Zerstörungen der beiden Weltkriege im Bereich von Architektur und Städtebau in Europa veranlasst haben. Die Verwüstungen von historischen, identitätsstiftenden urbanen Entitäten hatten unterschiedlichste Wiederaufbaudiskurse und -maßnahmen zur Folge, die prägend für das Erscheinungsbild und die funktionalen Strukturen zahlreicher europäischer Kommunen jeden Größenmaßstabs – vom nordfranzösischen Dorf Gerbéviller bis zur niederländischen Metropole Rotterdam – geworden sind. Wollten Sie immer schon das Geheimnis des grünen Geburtszimmers ergründen und damit französischen Einflüssen auf das Taufzeremoniell an den Höfen Savoyens und Burgunds auf die Spur kommen; haben Sie sich immer schon die Frage nach den Gründen für die Attraktivität der officiers de bouche am französischen und burgundischen Hof gestellt; interessiert Sie die Darstellung des Hofklerikers in den Werken des Johannes von Salisbury; bläst Sie ein Thema wie "Trompes et tromperie à la cour d’après Eustache Deschamps" voll an, und fürchten Sie, ohne Kenntnis der Inszenierung von Hofkultur im "Roman de la Violette" des Gerbert von Montreuil nicht mehr mitreden zu können? (Rezensent als gebürtiger Kölner hat dank der Lektüre immerhin erstmals von der literarischen Existenz des Hofs eines Herzogs Milo in Köln erfahren.) Wenn ja, dann greifen Sie zu diesem Band, der Ihnen all das und noch viel mehr bietet. Da bestellt ein jeder der rund 30 Beiträger – es handelt sich um die Akten einer im September 2008 in Paris und Versailles veranstalteten Tagung – sein Forschungsgärtlein, und ein jeder tut’s auf seine Weise: Das reicht vom Recyceln eigener Forschungen bis hin zu Substantielles offerierenden, aus Handschriften und Archivalia geschöpften Studien. Es ist halt so wie stets bei solchen Kongressen und den daraus hervorgehenden Publikationen: Am Ende findet der Leser Produkte von Dünn- und Dickbrettbohrern zwischen zwei Buchdeckeln vereint, und es ist an ihm, aus der im Gesamt non multum , sed multa ausbreitenden Fülle von Spezialthemen das ihn Interessierende herauszufiltern und daran die kritische Sonde anzulegen. Dass auch Agostino Paravicini Bagliani, eigentlich um klare Urteile nicht verlegen, in seiner Zusammenfassung konsequent keinen Autor namentlich und wertend anführt, lässt sich nachvollziehen: Zum einen kann man in solcher Funktion nicht als Oberzensor Noten verteilen, zum anderen – und dies gilt dann auch für den Rezensenten – bleibt jeder Versuch, die Beiträge einzeln zu würdigen und zu verorten, von vornherein schlicht aus Platzgründen zum Scheitern verurteilt, erforderte doch allein die bloße Wiedergabe des Inhaltsverzeichnisses (hier S. 655–658) schon mehrere Seiten. Mithin beschränke ich mich auf die Darlegung von Grundsätzlichem, von sich in den Aufsätzen wiederholt abzeichnenden Linien und Tendenzen und damit auf das generelle Profil des Bandes; einzelne Autoren finden allenfalls Erwähnung, wenn ihre Studien mir in solchem Kontext exemplarisch erscheinen. ...
Le présent volume, issu d’un colloque à l’université de Münster en novembre 2009, se situe au carrefour de trois champs thématiques dont aucun ne constitue, en soi, un sujet dont on pourrait prétendre qu’il aurait été jusqu’alors inconnu ou négligé de la recherche scientifique: ni l’amitié, ni le don, ni même la notion de réseaux (sociaux) ne surprennent ainsi dans le contexte des études récentes sur l’histoire sociale et politique du Moyen Âge. C’est la combinaison des trois aspects qui promet l’ouverture de nouvelles pistes. En outre, comme le constate Michael Grünbart dans son introduction (p. XIII–XXV), les approches se concentrant sur les actions ritualisées, qui constituent un courant important au sein des études médiévales, sont moins présentes dans les études byzantinistes. D’où la volonté d’appliquer ces méthodes au monde byzantin dans une perspective comparatiste (p. XIV–XVI). ...

"Das Private ist politisch", lautete ein Slogan, unter welchem die deutsche Frauenbewegung ab 1968 eine Auseinandersetzung mit der etablierten Geschlechterhierarchie einforderte. Und politisch ist das Private auch nach Dagmar Herzog, die mit dem vorliegenden Band einen gelungenen Überblick über die Geschichte der Sexualität in Europa liefert. Seien es Fragen der Empfängnisverhütung, Homosexualität, Pornographie, Vergewaltigung oder der Geschlechtskrankheiten, stets waren die nationalen Regierungen unweigerlich involviert, weil sie nicht umhin kamen, Regelungen zu fixieren und somit Verhaltensmuster vorzugeben oder diesen mit der juristischen Rahmenordnung zu folgen. Das Buch reicht aber weiter, indem es sich auch die Rekonstruktion sexueller Ethiken zum Ziel setzt: Welche Gedanken und Empfindungen waren mit Sexualität verbunden, was löste Ängste aus, was wurde bekämpft? Inwiefern änderte sich die Einstellung der Gesellschaften im Laufe des Jahrhunderts? Denn letztlich ging es immer wieder aufs Neue um die Deutungshoheit, was richtig und was falsch ist. ...
Auch nach mehr als 70 Jahren gehört die britische Appeasement-Politik zu den umstrittenen Themen der europäischen Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert. Schon im Zweiten Weltkrieg als "Guilty Men" bezichtigt, und dann nach 1945 von Churchill wortgewaltig als Schwächlinge und einfältige Toren an den Pranger gestellt, gelten Neville Chamberlain und seine Mitstreiter seinen Kritikern als Politiker, die die wahren Ziele von Hitlers Außenpolitik nicht erkannten und so seinem Machtzuwachs nicht rechtzeitig Grenzen setzten. Demgegenüber verweisen seine Unterstützer auf die begrenzten Möglichkeiten der britischen Außenpolitik, die einen härteren Kurs der Eindämmung nicht zugelassen hätten. ...
Lange ist es noch nicht her, da klagte Werner Paravicini in seiner Besprechung der Biographie Ludwigs XI. von Jean Favier, dass dieser Herrscher seit einigen Jahrzehnten in recht dichter Folge mit beleg- und anmerkungslosen Arbeiten im Stil der "haute vulgarisation" bedacht werde (Kendall, Gaussin, Bordenove, Heers, Gobry und eben Favier), ein wissenschaftlichen Ansprüchen genügendes Werk seit dem 1928 von Pierre Champion vorgelegten dagegen fehle (Francia 30/1 [2003], S. 376f.). Und nunmehr erneut ein Buch, das sich nahtlos in diese Reihe fügt und obendrein den Blickwinkel sogar noch bewusst verengt: Der Verfasser konzentriert sich ausschließlich auf die Person Ludwigs und will darüber hinaus keine Zeit und Welt erschließen; er beschränkt sich auf die Darstellung dessen, was den Herrscher nach seinem Dafürhalten – bis auf Jagd, Tiere und Musik – allein interessierte: "Louis se passionnait pour le pouvoir, la guerre et la politique, il en sera donc question presque à chaque page" (S. 10). ...
Treffen im Titel eines Sammelbandes zwei Worte aufeinander, die auf einigermaßen aktuelle kulturwissenschaftliche "Turns" verweisen, im vorliegenden Fall auf den "Iconic" und den "Performative Turn", so liegt der Verdacht nahe, dass hier entweder alter Wein in neue Schläuche verpackt wird oder dass modische Schlagworte inhaltliche Leere verdecken sollen. Beide Befürchtungen erweisen sich im vorliegenden Band glücklicherweise als unbegründet. Stattdessen zeigt sich deutlich, wie gerade das Konzept der Performanz zu einem neuen Verständnis der Rolle von Bildern und ihrer Wirksamkeit im hoch- und spätmittelalterlichen lateinischen Europa beitragen kann. Um diesen zeitlichen und räumlichen Schwerpunkt herum, der sich aus der Zusammenarbeit der Brüsseler Groupe de recherche en histoire médiéval (GRHM) und der Pariser Groupe d’anthropologie historique de l’Occident médiéval (GAHOM) ergibt, versammeln sich Beiträge, die zudem auch die (christliche) Antike, Byzanz, die Frühe Neuzeit und sogar das 20. und 21. Jahrhundert in den Blick nehmen. ...
