The current forest policy in Germany is to change forest monocultures into mixed forests. This is based on the assumption that monocultures are less robust against climatic influences (e.g. storm, drought), more susceptible to pest organisms (JACTEL et al. 2002, WOODS 2003, BURTON et al. 1992) and are for several insect taxa known to show a lower species richness in comparison to mixed forests (YOUNG 1986, BARKMAN 1992, BURKHART & THAM 1992, DENNIS 1997, BRAGANCA et al. 1998). This investigation wanted to verify this thesis in forests consisting of European beech (Fagus sylvatica), Norway spruce (Picea abies) and of both tree species. The area of investigation was in the Solling region, a large woodland in Lower Saxony (Germany).
Since the 80s, the popular park- and city tree Aesculus hippocastanum has been infested with the leaf miner Cameraria ohridella (DESCHKA & DIMIC 1986). Additionally, the pathogenic fungi Guignardia aesculi causes leaf blotch disease and Erysiphe flexuosa causes powdery mildew on horse chestnuts. Often, all three diseases occur in parallel at the same leaves leading to a situation of competition. Moreover, recently some endophytic fungi were isolated from the leaf tissue of A. hippocastanum. In the present study, the volatile interaction between three trophic levels plant, insect, and fungi are discussed.
The Hawaiian Islands have arisen in isolation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean due to volcanism unleashed by interaction of mantle-deep thermal plumes with the overlying Pacific Plate (MONTELLI et al. 2004, ABOUCHAMI et al. 2005). This volcano “factory” has produced a consistently present string of islands increasing in age from the current Big Island of Hawaii (500,000 years old) northwestwardly to the island of Kure, estimated to be 28-30 million years old (CARSON & CLAGUE 1995). Successively colonizing and proliferating on these islands since Miocene time (LIEBHERR 2005), are beetles classified in the carabid beetle genus Blackburnia SHARP, 1878 (LIEBHERR & ZIMMERMAN 2000). The 132 known Blackburnia species are arrayed in four successive adelphotaxa. The monotypic subgenus Protocaccus LIEBHERR & ZIMMERMAN, 2000, adelphotaxon to the rest of the radiation, is represented by B. mandibularis LIEBHERR, 2000 of Kauai. The next-diverging clade is classified as subgenus Colpocaccus SHARP, 1903, and is composed of four flightcapable species. The last two adelphotaxa are the nominate subgenus Blackburnia and subgenus Metromenus SHARP, 1884. The former includes 52 species, and is based on a ground-plan ancestor that was capable of dispersal by winged flight. This clade exhibits the greatest anagenetic diversification of all four clades, with various subgroups exhibiting extensive modifications of the external cuticle, including thickened, ridged, and variously shaped pronota and elytra, as well as elongate legs, and extensive specializations of the male and female genitalia (LIEBHERR & ZIMMERMAN 1998, 2000). Taxa exhibiting cuticular modifications are all brachypterous, suggesting that loss of metathoracic wings was a requisite precursor to modification of body armature. All 75 species of subgenus Metromenus are characterized by brachyptery. These also exhibit various body forms however the member taxa are never characterized by the thickened cuticle and associated modifications seen among taxa of sg. Blackburnia. Monophyly of the latter three subgenera was corroborated using molecular sequence data (CRYAN et al. 2001), though basal relationships of the three clades were resolved so that Colpocaccus and Metromenus were construed as adelphotaxa. In this study, morphological characters, and ecological and genetic characteristics of the various clades compared. These comparisons illustrate the coordinated diversification of ecological and genetic traits, and how these are associated with different levels of speciation. These traits are then put in the context of species endangerment, assessed using biotic survey data started in the 19th Century, and continuing during present-day efforts to completely describe and characterize the Blackburnia fauna.
A new type of biocide GCSC-BtA, named from "Germany-China Scientific Cooperation-Bacillus thuringiensis-Abamectin", was successfully developed by conjugating delta-endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) with Abamectin from Streptomyces avermitilis through conjugator EDC for control of different agricultural arthropod pests. The laboratory results of efficiency of biocide GCSC-BtA to four different arthropod pests and its side-effect on two species of predators are presented in this paper. The results showed significant differences in the mortalities of Tetranychus cinnabarinus (BOISD.) (Acari, Tetranychidae), Frankliniella occidentalis PERGANDE (Thys., Thripidae), Aphis fabae SCOPOLI (Hom., Aphididae) and Cameraria ohridella DESCHKA ET DIMI´C (Lep., Gracillariidae) caused by treatment of 0.6250 mg/ml of formulated product of GCSC-BtA, B.t., Abamectin and Cypermethrin. GCSC-BtA treatment caused higher mortalities of 86.37%, 94.82%, 94.15% and 93.23% in T. cinnabarinus, F. occidentalis, A. fabae and C. ohridella, respectively. Mortalities caused by Abamectin treatment were 73.92%, 63.3%, 86.52% and 73.48%, and by Cypermethrin treatment were 44.29%, 57.28%, 97.68% and 51.26%, respectively. B.t. could only kill C. ohridella with 87.62% mortality. Pesticidal treatment gave variations in mortalities of Orius strigicollis POPPIUS (Het., Anthocoridae) and Stethorus cantonensis PANG (Col., Coccinellidae) predators at p < 0.01, where 0.6250 mg/ml GCSC-BtA caused 21.76% and 32.42% mortalities, while the same rate of products of Abamectin with 73.26% and 87.67% as well as Cypermethrin with 86.43% and 93.83% mortalities, respectively. It is concluded that the biocide GCSC-BtA has increased efficacies as well as host ranges of B.t. and Abamectin, but displayed safer to some predators.
The little known ladybird, Serangium parcesetosum SICARD (Col., Coccinellidae) seems to be an important predator of whiteflies. It has found attacking Bemisia tabaci (GENN.) (Hom., Aleyrodidae) (KAPADIA & PURI 1992), Aleurolobus barodensis MASK (PATEL et al. 1996), Aleurothrixus floccosus MASKELL (ABBOUD & AHMAD 1998), Bemisia argentifolii BELLOWS and PERRING (LEGASPI et al. 2001) as well as Dialeurodes citri (ASHMEAD) (YIGIT et al. 2003). However, in Germany the laboratory studies demonstrated that S. parcesetosum is a promising predator of B. tabaci (AL-ZYOUD & SENGONCA 2004; SENGONCA et al. 2004; AL-ZYOUD et al. 2005a, b; SENGONCA et al. 2005). One of the important features for a successful predator is to live for a long period on the prey species and also not feed on the plant in the prey absence. Long longevity accomplished by voraciously feeding of S. parcesetosum adults resulted in a successful control of B. argentifolii (ELLIS et al. 2001). To use this predator successfully in controlling the whiteflies, especially B. tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum WESTWOOD (Hom., Aleyrodidae), it was important to investigate its natural and artificial nutritional sources. However, such knowledge of S. parcesetosum is still insufficient or completely lacking in the literature. Therefore, the present work was directed to study the longevity of S. parcesetosum on natural nutritional sources such as B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum as well as on certain artificial nutritional sources at two different temperatures in the laboratory.
