Exercise is a treatment option in peripheral artery disease (PAD) patients to improve their clinical trajectory, at least in part induced by collateral growth. The ligation of the femoral artery (FAL) in mice is an established model to induce arteriogenesis. We intended to develop an animal model to stimulate collateral growth in mice through exercise. The training intensity assessment consisted of comparing two different training regimens in C57BL/6 mice, a treadmill implementing forced exercise and a free-to-access voluntary running wheel. The mice in the latter group covered a much greater distance than the former pre- and postoperatively. C57BL/6 mice and hypercholesterolemic ApoE-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice were subjected to FAL and had either access to a running wheel or were kept in motion-restricting cages (control) and hind limb perfusion was measured pre- and postoperatively at various times. Perfusion recovery in C57BL/6 mice was similar between the groups. In contrast, ApoE-/- mice showed significant differences between training and control 7 d postoperatively with a significant increase in pericollateral macrophages while the collateral diameter did not differ between training and control groups 21 d after surgery. ApoE-/- mice with running wheel training is a suitable model to simulate exercise induced collateral growth in PAD. This experimental set-up may provide a model for investigating molecular training effects.
PELDOR (pulse electron-electron double resonance) is an established method to study intramolecular distances and can give evidence for conformational changes and flexibilities. However, it can also be used to study intermolecular interactions as for example oligerimization. Here, we used PELDOR to study the ‘end-to-end’ stacking of small double stranded (ds)RNAs. For this study, the dsRNA molecules were only singly labelled with the spin label TPA to avoid multi-spin effects and to measure only the intermolecular stacking interactions. It can be shown that small dsRNAs tend to assemble to rod-like structures due to π-π-interactions between the base pairs at the end of the strands. On the one hand, these interactions can influence or complicate measurements aimed at the determining of the structure and dynamics of the dsRNA molecule itself. On the other hand, it can be interesting to study such intermolecular stacking interactions in more detail, as for example their dependence on ion concentration. We quantitatively determined the stacking probability as a function of the monovalent NaCl salt and the dsRNA concentration. From this data the dissociation constant Kd was deduced and found to depend on the ratio between the NaCl salt and dsRNA concentrations. Additionally, the distances and distance distributions obtained predict a model for the stacking geometry of dsRNAs. Introducing a nucleotide overhangs at one end of the dsRNA molecule restricts the stacking to the other end, leading only to dimer formations. Introducing such an overhang at both ends of the dsRNA molecule fully suppresses stacking, as we could demonstrate by PELDOR experiments quantitatively.
Introduction Current: evidence suggests that the loss of mechanoreceptors after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears might be compensated by increased cortical motor planning. This occupation of cerebral resources may limit the potential to quickly adapt movements to unforeseen external stimuli in the athletic environment. To date, studies investigating such neural alterations during movement focused on simple, anticipated tasks with low ecological validity. This trial, therefore, aims to investigate the cortical and biomechanical processes associated with more sport-related and injury-related movements in ACL-reconstructed individuals.
Methods and analysis: ACL-reconstructed participants and uninjured controls will perform repetitive countermovement jumps with single leg landings. Two different conditions are to be completed: anticipated (n=35) versus unanticipated (n=35) successful landings. Under the anticipated condition, participants receive the visual information depicting the requested landing leg prior to the jump. In the unanticipated condition, this information will be provided only about 400 msec prior to landing. Neural correlates of motor planning will be measured using electroencephalography. In detail, movement-related cortical potentials, frequency spectral power and functional connectivity will be assessed. Biomechanical landing quality will be captured via a capacitive force plate. Calculated parameters encompass time to stabilisation, vertical peak ground reaction force, and centre of pressure path length. Potential systematic differences between ACL-reconstructed individuals and controls will be identified in dependence of jumping condition (anticipated/ unanticipated, injured/uninjured leg and controls) by using interference statistics. Potential associations between the cortical and biomechanical measures will be calculated by means of correlation analysis. In case of statistical significance (α<0.05.) further confounders (cofactors) will be considered.
Ethics and dissemination: The independent Ethics Committee of the University of Frankfurt (Faculty of Psychology and Sports Sciences) approved the study. Publications in peer-reviewed journals are planned. The findings will be presented at scientific conferences.

Perfectionism nowadays is frequently understood as a multidimensional personality trait with two higher-order dimensions of perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns. While perfectionistic concerns are robustly found to correlate with negative outcomes and psychological malfunctioning, findings concerning the outcomes of perfectionistic strivings are inconsistent. There is evidence that perfectionistic strivings relate to psychological maladjustment on the one hand but to positive outcomes on the other hand as well. Moreover, perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns frequently showed substantial overlap. These inconsistencies of differential relations and the substantial overlap of perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns raise questions concerning the factorial structure of perfectionism and the meaning of its dimensions. In this study, several bifactor models were applied to disentangle the common variance of perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns at the item level using Hill et al.’s (2004) Perfectionism Inventory (PI). The PI measures a broad range of perfectionism dimensions by four perfectionistic strivings and four perfectionistic concerns subscales. The bifactor-(S – 1) model with one general factor defined by concern over mistakes as the reference facet, four specific perfectionistic strivings factors, and three specific perfectionistic concerns factors showed acceptable fit. The results revealed a clear separation between perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns, as the general factor represented concern over mistakes, while the perfectionistic strivings factors each explained a substantial amount of reliable variance independent of the general factor. As a result, factor scores of the specific perfectionistic strivings factors and the general factor had differential relationships with achievement motivation, neuroticism, conscientiousness, and self-efficacy that met with theoretical expectations, while results for manifest subscale scores were ambiguous. Our results question the existence of reliable sub-constructs of perfectionistic concerns independent of the general factor when defined by concern over mistakes.
Hochschuldidaktische Weiterbildungsveranstaltungen haben häufig nur eine geringe Akzeptanz bei etablierten Hochschullehrenden. Es wird angenommen, dass der Nachweis wissenschaftlicher Evidenz hochschuldidaktischer Maßnahmen deren Akzeptanz in Hochschulen erhöht. Zur Verknüpfung von empirischer Forschung und hochschuldidaktischen Weiterbildungen schlagen wir ein Spiralmodell vor. Praktisch werden ausgehend von theoretischen und empirischen Grundlagen relevante Ergebnisse für die Bearbeitung in hochschuldidaktischen Weiterbildungen entwickelt. Die Anwendung des Spiralmodells wird an einem Praxisbeispiel zum Themenfeld "Interkulturelle Kommunikation in der Hochschule" illustriert.
Die Internationalisierung der deutschen Hochschulen nahm in den letzten Jahren stark zu. Umgang mit Studierenden aus unterschiedlichen Kulturen bedeutet für Lehrende längst Alltag. Nicht immer jedoch verläuft die Kommunikation zwischen Angehörigen unterschiedlicher Kulturen reibungslos. Um möglichen Schwierigkeiten entgegenzuwirken, setzen einige Universitäten interkulturelle Trainings ein zur Sensibilisierung für interkulturelle Unterschiede. Die Autoren haben im Rahmen eines hochschuldidaktischen Weiterbildungsprogramms für Lehrende ein interkulturelles Training entwickelt und eingesetzt. Über den Aufbau und die Ziele des Trainings wird im vorliegenden Artikel berichtet. Weiterhin wird ein Untersuchungsdesign vorgestellt, mit welchem der Einfluss von Kultur auf die Online-Kommunikation in der Lehre untersucht wurde.
Verständnisvolle Dozenten haben weniger Fachwissen : Wirkungen der sprachlichen Anpassung an Laien

In der Interaktion mit Studierenden ist schriftliche Online-Kommunikation ein wichtiges Arbeitsmedium für jeden Lehrenden geworden. Die Interaktionspartner haben dabei für ihre Urteilsbildung über den jeweils anderen ausschließlich den geschriebenen Text mit seinen lexikalen und grammatikalischen Merkmalen zur Verfügung. Das Ausmaß der lexikalen Anpassung an die Wortwahl eines Studierenden kann daher einen Einfluss auf die studentische Bewertung ihrer Dozenten hinsichtlich unterschiedlicher Persönlichkeitseigenschaften haben. In der vorliegenden Studie beurteilten Studierende jeweils zwei Dozenten hinsichtlich Verständnis, Gewissenhaftigkeit und Intellekt (IPIP, Goldberg, Johnson, Eber et al., 2006) auf Grundlage einer Emailkommunikation. Der Grad der lexikalen Anpassung der Lehrenden wurde dabei variiert. Es zeigte sich, dass Studierende Dozenten mit umgangssprachlicher Wortwahl als verständnisvoller, gewissenhafter aber tendenziell weniger wissend einschätzen.
In diesem Beitrag werden Ansätze zur Förderung der Eignungsreflexion der Studierenden im Lehramt sowie der Beratungskompetenz der betreuenden Lehrenden an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt dargestellt: Für die Studierenden wurden unterschiedliche Maßnahmen entwickelt und implementiert, die die Reflexion über die persönliche Eignung für den Lehrerberuf fördern und bestehende Defizite frühzeitig ausgleichen helfen. Für die betreuenden Lehrenden (an Universität und Schule) wurde eine hochschuldidaktische Weiterbildung entwickelt und eingesetzt, welche deren Beratungskompetenz stärken soll.
Im Rahmen des Bund-Länder-Programms "Qualitätspakt Lehre" hat die Goethe-Universität Frankfurt erfolgreich das Programm "Starker Start ins Studium" eingeworben. Dadurch verfügt das Institut für Psychologie nun über die personellen Möglichkeiten, die fachliche und soziale Integration neuer Psychologiestudierender im sechssemestrigen Bachelorstudiengang Psychologie zu verbessern. Hierzu wurden zwei obligate je zweisemestrige Lehrmodule entwickelt. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag wird das übergeordnete Lehrkonzept beschrieben und dessen Implementierung im Fach Psychologie als Praxisbeispiel illustriert.
Knee acoustic emissions provide information about joint health and loading in motion. As the reproducibility of knee acoustic emissions by vibroarthrography is yet unknown, we evaluated the intrasession and interday reliability of knee joint sounds. In 19 volunteers (25.6 ± 2.0 years, 11 female), knee joint sounds were recorded by two acoustic sensors (16,000 Hz; medial tibial plateau, patella). All participants performed four sets standing up/sitting down (five repetitions each). For measuring intrasession reliability, we used a washout phase of 30 min between the first three sets, and for interday reliability we used a washout phase of one week between sets 3 and 4. The mean amplitude (dB) and median power frequency (Hz, MPF) were analyzed for each set. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs (2,1)), standard errors of measurement (SEMs), and coefficients of variability (CVs) were calculated. The intrasession ICCs ranged from 0.85 to 0.95 (tibia) and from 0.73 to 0.87 (patella). The corresponding SEMs for the amplitude were ≤1.44 dB (tibia) and ≤2.38 dB (patella); for the MPF, SEMs were ≤13.78 Hz (tibia) and ≤14.47 Hz (patella). The intrasession CVs were ≤0.06 (tibia) and ≤0.07 (patella) (p < 0.05). The interday ICCs ranged from 0.24 to 0.33 (tibia) and from 0 to 0.82 (patella) for both the MPF and amplitude. The interday SEMs were ≤4.39 dB (tibia) and ≤6.85 dB (patella) for the amplitude and ≤35.39 Hz (tibia) and ≤15.64 Hz (patella) for the MPF. The CVs were ≤0.14 (tibia) and ≤0.08 (patella). Knee joint sounds were highly repeatable within a single session but yielded inconsistent results for the interday reliability.
