Thought structures of modelling task solutions and their connection to the level of difficulty
(2015)
Although efforts have been made to integrate the concept of mathematical modelling in school, among others PISA and TIMSS revealed weaknesses of not only German students in the field of mathematical modelling. There may be various reasons starting from educational policy via curricular issues to practical instructional concerns. Studies show that mathematical modelling has not been arrived yet in everyday school class (Blum &BorromeoFerri, 2009, p. 47). Thus, the proportion of mathematical modelling in everyday school classes is low (Jordan et al., 2006). When focusing on the teachers’ point of view there are difficulties which may contribute to avoid modelling tasks in class. The development of reasonable modelling tasks, estimating the task space, valuating the task difficulty and assessing the student solutions are difficulties which occur to an increasing degree compared to ordinary mathematics tasks. The project MokiMaS (transl.: modeling competency in math classes of secondary education) aims at providing inter-year modelling tasks, whose task space and level of difficulty is known, together with an evaluation scheme. In particular a theory based method has been developed to determine the level of difficulty of modelling tasks on the basis of thought structures, representing the cognitive load of solution approaches. The current question is whether this method leads to a realistic rating. To go further into that question an evaluation scheme has been developed which is guided by the daily assessment work of teachers, to investigate the relation of task difficulty and student performance.
The article discusses recent history developments in Central and Eastern Europe more than a quarter century after the political change of 1989 on the development of programs at former traditional departments of German studies, the training of teachers for German as a foreign language and the growing importance of German for specific purposes.
For intercultural language teaching, coaching students on how to perceive the cultural “other” is of crucial importance in order to avoid culturally based misunderstandings. This paper explores how perceiving the other can offer conclusions for perceiving and becoming aware of the self. Through that, a process of giving and taking ensues in which perceptions of the self and of the other are constantly fluctuating depending on the context in which the communication is taking place. At the crossroads between members of two different cultures, a dialogue emerges in which the points of view of both parties are changed. The paper outlines how perception is a construct in which one’s own origin, education, and emotions are blended in. Intercultural learning is the way to deal with this constructs in a flexible manner so as to create new interpretation patterns. It teaches how to sympathize with the other and how to better understand oneself.
The title of this study is applying team teaching to improve student ability in understanding English narrative texts. The purposes of this study are to identify the advantages and to find out the strategies of applying team teaching to improve students ability in understanding English narrative texts. The population of this study is the first year students of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh, and the sample are an experimental class (X IA 2) and a control class (X IA 6). The total numbers of the samples are 66 students. This research was conducted on April, 2010. In collecting data, several techniques were used namely; observation, test, questionnaire and interview. According to data analysis, team teaching gave more advantages to improve students’ ability in understanding English narrative texts. Some advantages of team teaching to the first year students of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh; (1) Team teaching directed the students to focus on material, the method was not tedious and learning motivation had been increased by using it, so that their ability in understanding English narrative text had been increased. (2) The students who studied by using team teaching obtained higher score than the students who studied without using team teaching. It means the students who studied by using team teaching could improve their abilities in understanding English narrative text. (3) The students should focus on the study because the teachers observed what they do in the class comprehensively. The student also could receive knowledge not only from the main teacher, but also from the co-teacher and they could ask both teachers if they found some problems. Some advantages of team teaching to the teachers of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh are; team teaching could be effective while teaching and learning process was underway because the teachers could remind each other and they also could plan good materials. In applying team teaching to improve students’ ability in understanding English narrative texts, the teachers used many strategies. One of the general strategies to apply team teaching in SMAN 4 Banda Aceh was by excercising the so called semi team teaching. The special strategies that conducted by teachers were; (1) Presenting an interesting and understandable topic in every meeting for students. (2) Making group discussion, reading the legend and translating it, giving regularly the test and games. (3) Asking the students to comprehend the generic structure of the text before coming to the class.
Previous research on working memory (WM) in children with poor mathematical skills has yielded heterogeneous results, possibly due to inconsistent consideration of the IQ-achievement discrepancy and additional reading and spelling difficulties. To examine the impact of both, the WM of 68 average-achieving and 68 low-achieving third-graders in mathematics was assessed. Preliminary analyses showed that poor mathematical skills were associated with poor WM. Afterwards, children with isolated mathematical difficulties were separated from those with additional reading and spelling difficulties. Half of each group fulfilled the IQ-achievement discrepancy, resulting in a 2 (additional reading and spelling difficulties: yes/no) by 2 (IQ-achievement discrepancy: yes/no) factorial design. Analyses revealed that not fulfilling the IQ achievement discrepancy was associated with poor visual WM, whereas additional reading and spelling difficulties were associated with poor central executive functioning in children fulfilling the IQ-achievement discrepancy. Therefore, WM in children with poor mathematical skills differs according to the IQ-achievement discrepancy and additional reading and spelling difficulties.
