In the 1930s and 40s the leading political figures of the German minority in Romania embraced a pro-fascist attitude. Therefore, after the WWII, Germans had to suffer expropriation, deportation and privation of civil rights. Since 1949 they were permitted to rebuild their cultural life which – according to the communist paradigm – had to be „Marxist in its content and national in shape“. In 1956 an Institute for Social Studies and the Humanities of the Romanian Academy was created in Sibiu in order to continue important scientific projects of the German minority, and since 1959 the review Forschungen zur Volks- und Landeskunde appeared as a tribune of Transylvanian studies. Although the editorial staff had to make concessions to the communist regime, its members tried to keep high scientific standards. Therefore the review Forschungen, the sole scientific periodical of the Romanian Academy published in German, was one of the most important reviews of the time.
The purpose of this work is the linguistic analysis of the German street names in Petreşti, a locality in the county of Alba situated 4 kilometers south of the town of Sebeş which has a German-Romanian bilingual population. We also want to develop a morpho-lexical analysis (compounds of two words and descriptive constructions formed by a preposition and a noun), as well as of aspects of orthography and spelling (we analyze especially the inconsequences which appeared in the spelling of the street names and in their orthography), and furthermore an analysis of onomastic interferences, starting from the comparison of the German and Romanian street names (translation calques and words resulted from calques).
Beispiel, Erfahrung, Theorie : Übersetzungswissenschaftliche Anmerkungen von Hermine Pilder-Klein
(2010)
The present article concentrates on the activity of Hermine Pilder-Klein as theoretician and translation critic. (Hermine Pilder-Klein: translator from Romanian to German of the second half of the 20th century carried out 80 translations from this cultural space in the period 1933-1972. Horst Schuller makes reference to 2 articles that are kept in the archive of the Museum of Gundelsheim: 1. a review of the volume Siebenbürgisch Sächsisches Wörterbuch (Transylvanian Saxon Dictionary) published in Bucharest. The review was published in the No. 4/1972 of the periodical Vierteljahresblätter in München; 2. a critical presentation of the volume Rumänische Volksmärchen (Romanian Folk Tales) edited by Ovidiu Bârlea and Felix Karlinger (the volume was published in 1969 in Düsseldorf/Köln: Eugen Diederichs Verlag), the work bearing the title Übersetzung-Schlüssel und Brücke (Translation – Key and Bridge) (1977), remained unpublished and was taken over by Horst Schuller in the present article.
Kultur und (Rechts)Sprache
(2010)
The content of the present paper can be outlined as follows:
1) Law is an integrative part of culture.
2) Legal terminology is system-bound. Thus, within one and the same language there are as many legal languages as there are legal orders that use that particular language as their legal language.
3) The representation of culture in legal texts is encountered both on word and on text level: on the one hand legal terms have often been referred to as culturemes, as they are informed by the respective legal order; on the other hand texts are being regarded as cultural products as they depend on the particular legal order.
The adequate assessment of lexicographical approaches to phraseologisms requires certain evaluation criteria. Among the aspects to be assessed are, besides the arrangement of the front, middle and back matter and the selection of material, the macrostructural organization and the quality of the microstructural components. The present article focuses on the lexicographical standards set for phraseological dictionaries by metalexicographical researchers in the field of German Studies, while it critically examines the macro- and microstructural profile of special phraseological dictionaries developed in Romania with German as a target and source language. This examination has revealed serious shortcomings regarding both the conceptual orientation and the construction of dictionary entries. These shortcomings may influence the use of dictionaries by translators and non-native speakers as well, who represent the actual target group.
Gradation and intensification can be subject to different linguistic procedures. The present paper focuses on aspects of intensification and gradation by means of word formation in adjectives. The argument is that German and Romanian, as languages belonging to different language families, operate with different means to express high intensity in adjectives. The critical analysis on dictionary items (German-Romanian) aims at disclosing how mental representations are being formally structured at language level. It argues that correct equivalence in translation work can be achieved only if the deep structure level is properly understood by the translator.
Zum Quellenwert deutscher Sprachzeugnisse aus Südosteuropa für die Sprachgeschichte des Deutschen
(2010)
The history of the German language is not described adequately by the classification into Old, Middle High, Early New and New High German. Looking at regional varieties shows the simultaneous existence of older and newer manifestations in the language. Examples of older Transsylvanian writings and Danube-Swabian dialects from Romania and Hungary show how German varieties of South-Eastern Europe can be used for a more profound understanding of the history of the entire German language.
The Chair of German Philology at the University of Sibiu delivered literary-historical studies on themes of the German Literature in Romania for several years. Together with the Forschungszentrum für Sozialwissenschaften (Research Centre for Social Studies), together with the local agency of the Romanian Academy Bucharest, denominated the Institute for Social and Humanistic Researches and together with other Chairs of the country there have been envisaged and performed community projects.
The contributor gives information on such projects on the basis of his knowledge of the involved staff, from the overview of agreements, methods and balances.

One can deal with aspects of language use from different perspectives (sociologically, pragmatically, psycho-linguistically etc.). The present article discusses stylistic markedness in different selected phrasemes whereby the following question is subject to investigation: do phrasemes as complex signs of secondary nomination show specific properties which, in contrast to simple lexemes, make them predisposed to stylistically marked use?

Mihai CRUDU: Rezension (308)
In the novel "The Land of Green Plums" (1994) the author renders an apocalyptic image of Romania during the communist dictatorship, Timişoara representing the tragic background of the narrated events. From this perspective, language becomes for Herta Müller a way of distancing from the dictatorial system, the author managing to express, through specific processes of language, the circumstances hat generated those events. The aphorisms and the idioms used in the text express the wrong behavior and communication mechanisms of the protagonists, demonstrating the presence of the security forces and of the dictatorship. The author often appeals to repetitions to highlight the continuous threat and the repression force of the authorities. Thus, the language is for Herta Müller a form of resistance against the totalitarian regime and the only place of expressing freedom, even under the dictatorship.

Information about culture and civilization has always been an integrated part of the courses for German as a foreign language. In the past few decades were developed several theoretical approaches regarding that aspect, for example the cognitive, the communicative or the intercultural approach. In course books and learning materials the culture and civilization component is most of the times related with the linguistic component, but recently, influenced by the development of the field of cultural studies, the cultural discourse has also become a priority. In the following article my aim is to depict to what extent this paradigm shift on a theoretical level is being reflected in learning materials. While the first part of the article is dedicated to the theoretical aspect, in the second part I intend to analyze examples of exercises and worksheets with regard to the educational objective.
The tendency to apply media in regional studies for students of German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache, DaF) is no longer a novelty. Thus, we see media applied as such in multiple different forms, like videos, press releases, radio segments or online statements. This contribution is focused on the radio interview, as a constitutive part of the regional studies’ courses for DaF students of Germanistik in Romania. As a starting point serves the assumption, that the application of visual media can be enhanced through dialogue sequences, which further highlight the subject of the course. Through chosen interviews, that have been aired by the state channels, students can become familiar with such issues, that affect the German minority in Romania. The authenticity that is being sought for, will result from the primary situation of the interviewer and the interviewee communicating, as well as through the utilization of Rumäniendeutsch as the standard language of the German minority, living in Romania. Thus can cultural, social, historical and linguistic phenomena that are specific for the local German speaking population and that are (re)constructing the cultural inheritance of Germans in Romania, be regarded in greater detail.
Here the German language acts as a bridge between Eastern and Western Europe playing an important role. It is exactly on the Banat with its multicultural tradition that many hopes are pinned. The introduction of the subject German Cultural Studies within the framework of the Communication Sciences at the “Polytechnic” University Timișoara is only a stepping stone, but in the given context this is however a sign that betokens our will to participate in the task of building the linguistic and cultural bridge. The present paper elaborates on starting points towards a cultural history of the Banat.
An essential factor for the naming practice lies in the language(s) spoken by that certain family. In the nowadays very common multilingual families in Transylvania, the so called ‚mixed marriages’, the linguistic contact also becomes manifest in the field of onomatology. Out of the vast subject matter, four aspects will be approached: the decline of the tradition of naming a child after a parent; naming practices following ethnic reasons in order to denote a certain identity; naming preferences for international names in mixed families; the increasing diversification and inter-culturality of name-giving due to globalization and the impact of social media. Concrete examples – based on bap tis mal registers of the local Lutheran Church – illustrate the monitored trends.
The article initially covers the historical information regarding two biblical saints „Saint Bartholomew“ and „John the Baptist“ and their birthdays. In vernacular documents from 1900 to 1980 inclusively, the Transylvanian-Saxon names „Bartholomew“ and „John“ were related to the respective saint. The vernacular documents show that their birthdays were playing a role in seasonal determination for peasant work as well as being used in descriptive country sayings, in idioms and in traditional customs. The case examples are taken from the TransylvanianSaxon Dictionary, the North Transylvanian Dictionary, as well as relevant specialist and vernacular literature.
The present paper reviews the articles published in the 20th volume of the Kronstädter Beiträge zur germanistischen Forschung, which focus on a variety of postmodern elements found within German culture, language, and literature. A special emphasis is set on the person and works of the German author living in Romania Joachim Wittstock, whom the given volume has been dedicated to, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
This study analyses the role of the Romanian language in Christian Hallers novel Die verschluckte Musik (2008). The Romanian words are linked to the content and symbolical context, and also to intimacy or strangeness. Single words and expressions are connected to memories and rituals. For the family residing in Bucharest they are everyday elements. By migration they become cultural artefacts, are included in family stories. In the new home country Switzerland, the Romanian language is an element of intimacy. The language is also a method of exclusion and dissociation. Ruth, the first-person narratorʼs mother, is excluded in Bucharest until she learns the national language. In the Swiss environment the already familiar Romanian language is for Ruth a method of dissociation. For the first-person narrator, the few Romanian words are details connected to gastronomic culture which distinguish him from the Swiss environment. While travelling through Bucharest, the Romanian language becomes a method of exclusion, it is connected to an area that was not attainable for a long period. His journey updates the language for him.
The article is dedicated to language in public space. The COVID-19 pandemic not only dominates the media, but is the subject of numerous linguistic comments and scientific articles discussing the linguistic consequences of the health crisis (the emergence of new meanings and words or the penetration of specialized terms in everyday language).
The Black Church, the largest sacral building in Transylvania, has been given a central role in the local identity narratives. As a historical place of remembrance, it mediates and mobilizes elements of historical knowledge, and at the same time constructs a myth. The article examines how the Black Church in Brasov, one of the most important symbols of the Transylvanian Saxons, is poetically constructed as a place of cultural memory in the German, Romanian and Hungarian poems of the interwar period, how the concrete place is reinterpreted as a space for creating identity, while the ethnic dimension should not be ignored. It examines the question of what symbolic value it has for the German, Romanian and Hungarian populations and how this can be seen from the lyrical texts of the time.
This article is dedicated to present the most common word-formation strategies in German railway specialist terminology. The presentation of the most productive morphological nomination strategies in the analysed area is preceded by a short historical outline of the railway industry in Germany. The adumbration of the historical background and hints regarding the current EU environmental plans for railways are intended to expose the importance and relentless currency of the analysis undertaken here. The presented examples, which were extracted from the most extensive industry terminology database, RaiLLexic, have been correlated with their Polish equivalents. This contrastive procedure allows, going further, to draw conclusions about both language systems within which the professional terminology described here is constituted.
This volume of studies goes back to research work that was carried out as part of a long-standing project, Deutscher Familiennamenatlas (DFA). The DFA and the individual studies record the family names in Germany and the border areas for the first time on the basis of telephone connections (as of 2005) and with a rich map material. The considerations on selected family names gathered here are preliminary studies of the DFA, which are dedicated to family names on -mann.
This edited volume is in part based on a conference organized at the West-Timisoara University in October 2016. The conference marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of a German program at this university, and dedicated a section to the life and work of Richard Wagner, an alumnus of this very department, promotion of 1975. As Enikő Dácz und Christina Rossi explain, the essays have been organized chronologically according to aesthetic and thematic considerations, taking into account Wagner’s early poems and short prose, his essayistic and novelistic works. Given the scant Wagner scholarship, this book is meant as an invitation to discover and to inspire further research on this author’s multifaceted and challenging work.
This paper examines meaning-making processes in the contemporary Hungarian German literature as processes of identity construction. I give a description of exemplary identity models provided by this literature and discuss, how the models have established themselves and what has led to their modification, destabilization or replacement. The research method implemented in the paper offers a systematic insight into the sociological formationprinciples of the models and also into their ideological determination, moreover, it allows the question to be asked, to what extent the models can contribute to orientation in their social and historic context.
After the First World War and the Danube Monarchy, Transylvania became a part of the Kingdom of Romania on December 1, 1918. The desired minority rights played an important role for the Transylvanian Saxons. The relationships with Hungary and Romania were reflected in the media coverage by the Transylvanian newspaper Siebenbürgisch-Deutsches Tageblatt. The authors created awareness on their concerns by using ideological vocabulary. Such political lexis acts as an appeal to the recipients. There is a clearly identifiable dichotomy: On the one side, negatively connoted lexis arises for the former political conditions in the Dual Monarchy. On the other side, positively connoted lexis appears for the needs and for the behavior of the Transylvanian Saxons and for the concepts of new political conditions that were published in the newspaper. This dichotomy consists of ideological vocabulary and lexis in common language.
German in space and time is a central aspect both from a scientific perspective and from the perspective of one´s own identity preservation within the language island situation. MsGerhild Rudolf’s thesis offers an analysis of the choice of languages within the Evangelical Church A.B. in Romania (ECR) and at the same time a general overview of language change processes within the ECR. There is an irreversible paradigm shift that is taking place along with the ongoing transition from a monolingual to a bilingual linguistic culture in worship. The status of German in the public use of language is also reflected, the efforts of preserving the German language and culture are presented from a current perspective, and the importance of the German minority is discussed historically and in a forward-looking manner. The thesis offers sufficient reason as well to think about future research on the role of the church and of German from different perspectives, to also emphasize the relevance of interdisciplinarity
This article is about creative writing in GFL-Lecture in Egypt. Writing as a skill is rarely considered in GFL- Lecture. Teachers pay attention to other skills such as reading, listening, or speaking, whereby writing is only considered receptively to promote speaking or grammar. This article is about trying to promote creative writing in GFL-Lecture and to offer new suggestions and tips. In a further step, this article deals with the presentation of some creative writing tasks that were carried out among the students of the third year at the language faculty (Al-Alsun) in Sohag. Finally, the conclusions are drawn, and results of creative writing shown.
In my contribution it’s about testaments made by german citizen of Cracow. The material is based on texts of last wills of people representing a minority of citizen of Cracow, the patrician families. The tastators where drawn dealer and trademans, which also pushing the development of the region. The texttype testament often marginalized by linguistics. I aske in opposite of this from the perspective of ontology and pragmatism: What is the deeper linguistic structure of this relative formalized texttype. I show in my analysis the texts of a last will include not only declarative (resp. indirect declarative) acts of speech but also a variety of assertive and directive elements. I don’t want to decide the justice of an act of speech but I have a catalogue of repetitive facultative phrases and combine this with particular narrations of certain paragraphs of testaments. This element not only refers to the private sphere of the tastators (conflicts or emotions) but uncover the social, educational and in part religious attitude of the testators. And so at least fully developed testaments let understood as selfreports.
This article covers midwives as such and their designations in the Transylvanian-Saxon vernaculars in detail with emphasis on the early documentary evidence in the first half of the 16th century as well as from the 18th century. The lexemes correlate their respective categories of word formation and show descriptive series of synonyms depicting at the same time the composition of the Transylvanian-Saxon vocabulary. Comments on the etymology of the word formations as well as on the midwife‘s profession are also included. The terms are taken from the Transylvanian-Saxon Dictionary and the North Transylvanian Saxon Dictionary as well as the specialist literature on vernacular.
The present study plans on highlighting aspects of completing the 4-year middle school term, which was in German, by the poet, writer, philosopher and playwright Lucian Blaga; more specifically aspects on following German schools in Blaga’s family, his early school days, stories about the educator Roth and the teacher Hans Wolf, on the location of the building and the atmosphere in the school, on the contact with the German culture and language which subsequently marked his personality and his work. At the heart of this presentation lies the autobiographical writing “The chronicle and the song of the ages”, published posthumously by “Editura Tineretului din Bucureşti” (“The Youth’s Publishing House from Bucureşti”) in 1965.
The first Conference for the Yiddish Language of 1908 was a highly significant event in the history of Yiddish language and culture, which became known in the literature as the Czernowitz Language Conference [Yidd. „di konferents far der yidisher shprakh“]. This conference was held in the city of Czernowitz from August 30 to September 3 and united prominent representatives of the worldwide Yiddish movement and, thus, triggered a significant impulse to the development of an energetic Yiddishspeaking constellation. The conference manifested awareness of the importance of Yiddish language and culture as a breeding ground for the survival of traditional “(Eastern) Jewish” values. Within this framework the debates regarding the cultivation of the Yiddish language have been intensified through reflective and resolute actions with the aim of releasing it from the stigma of jargon.
"Gendern" im Deutschen
(2020)
The terms gendern (< engl. gender) or gendering in German stand for the attempt to establish equality between men and women in everyday life or in political controversy, in academic life by means of linguistic methods. The representatives (plural feminine) of the feminist language criticism/ Feministische Linguistik call for the dissolution of the “generic masculine” for ex. jeder Lehrer (masculine/feminine) means a gender-mixed group whose gender/sex is neither relevant, nor known. It is criticized that the female teacher is not explicitly mentioned. The question here is whether the desired gender-appropriate treatment of all women germ. das Gendern – the genderconscious use of language – is guaranteed by diacriticalorthographic procedures such as internal I: LehrerInnen (fem. pl.), slash (/): Leser/innen (masc.sg./pl.;/f.pl.), asterisk shape: Lehrer*innen or gender-gap: ein_e Beamt_er_in (an official, m./f. sg.) or by replacement of pair shapes like die Arbeitnehmenden (employees; instead of the ‘classic form’ Arbeitnehmer/Arbeitnehmerinnen) or the participial construction die Fahrzeugführenden/ the vehicle-carrying/drivers.
: German Studies in Hermannstadt (Sibiu) have always put an increased focus on preserving continuity and consistency in teaching and research. The international anniversary conference (October 2019) that marked 50 years since the establishment of the Chair of German Studies in Hermannstadt (Sibiu) offered ample opportunity for taking a retrospective look in order to reflect on continuities and ruptures. Thus, in the article are mentioned some of the challenges that the chair had to face in its recent history.
The aim of the present paper is to analyse the trilingual Transylvanian toponyms (German, Hungarian an d Romanian) from the Terra ante Silvanum (The Realm Beneath the Forest) and to reconstruct and explain them. When the Saxons arrived in Transylvania, in the 12th Century, they met Szekler, Hungarian and Romanian ethnic groups. The Realm Beneath the Forest represents, from a historical point of view, the Western border of the Transylvanian territory inhabited by the Saxons, which was not a compact area and which was divided into three districts (Sibiu, Brașov, and Bistrița) and two ‘seats’ (Mediaș and Șeica). The Realm Beneath the Forest included three ‘seats’ (Lat. sedes, judicial and administrative forums): Orăștie, Sebeș and Miercurea Sibiului. All the areas of the Realm Beneath the Forest, both those inhabited by German and/or Hungarian and Romanian populations and those inhabited only by Romanian people, have corresponding toponyms in all three languages. The toponyms Orăștie, Romos, Aurel Vlaicu, Pianul de Jos, Petrești, Sebeș, Câlnic, Reciu, Gârbova, Dobârca, Miercurea Sibiului, Apoldu de Sus, Amnaș that are analysed in the paper can be classified according to the following criteria: according to their founder, to the river that flows through the area, to the local toponyms, to their origin and their way of formation. A series of toponyms contributed to the apparition of some autochthonous family names such as Broser, Hamlescher, Kellinger, Mühlbächer, Polder, Rätscher, Urbiger.
Olga Grjasnowa’s debut novel The Russian Is One Who Loves Birch Trees, revolving around themes such as national and linguistic boundaries, borderline transgressions and border crossings, the sense of home and the sense of alienation and the search for one’s own identity in the face of a life in the threshold of cultures. Using the example of a young woman who has emigrated from Azerbaijan, who was traumatized as a child, and who is trained as an interpreter in Germany, the article explores subjects such as loneliness, identity, limitations and hunger for language. By making interpreting her profession, the figure solidifies the leap from one culture to the next as a pattern of action and acts transculturally between different spaces. She finds access to marginalized groups, she has ambivalent erotic experiences with men as well as with women, which reflects her cultural indecision.
Beyond the communicative function of death notices, to informe about a death case, one will be repeatedly surprised by auxiliary functions of this category of private notices. The following article analizes from an intercultural perspective the representation of the (professional) identity in obituaries and death notices pertaining to a Romanian and a German corpus – the achievements attained to in the job environment and – in case of a blurred or merely outlined professional identity – on interests outside of one’s job, which were cherished by the deceased to the effect of shaping and defining him.

This article covers the verbs kopulieren (copulate) and kaufen (buy) with the meaning of, religious and legal marriage’ followed by the verb verändern (change) with the meaning of ,marry’, ,getting married’. The case examples show that certain meanings of a verb which have been retained in Transylvanian documentary sources and the Transylvanian-Saxon vernacular are indeed mentioned in High German, however, they are marked ,archaic’ (see the given meanings of the verbs kopulieren, originating from Latin and the given meanings of the verb verändern originating from Middle High German). On the other hand, when a certain meaning of a verb is not documented in High German any longer, Transylvanian document sources and the Transylvanian-Saxon vernacular can serve as documentation (see the verb kaufen which has retained the Middle High German meaning). The case examples are taken from the Transylvanian-Saxon Dictionary and the North-Transylvanian-Saxon Dictionary.

Herta Müller’s leaning towards word for word transfer of Romanian set phrases in her texts can be explained by the environment in which she lived until her emigration to West Germany and this admittedly intensifies with the gradually increasing general interest in multi-lingualism. The fact that the authoress speaks of the German-Romanian transfer in her acceptance speech on the occasion of the Nobel Prize award proves the important role, which Hertha Müller ascribes to this procedure. Also at the centre of the latest books by Balthasar Waitz stands the multicultural region of the Banat. The author seems to be gripped by the plurilingualism of the immediate surroundings of his homeland. Different forms of Romanian, from slang to everyday speech, but occasionally also Hungarian, Slovak and Serbian phrases find their way into the texts of the Banat author. In this manner just as with Hertha Müller, language images come into being, new light. Thus literary multilingualism in both writers enables one to have a novel access to the relation between literature and reality.
In the phenomenon of globalization, the foreign language skills are part of both scientific field and everyday life. Though the number of learners of German decreased in the last twenty years, German seems to be again in greater demand as a foreign language all over the world. In the Romanian universities, the study of the German language continues to arouse great interest in the recent years. The following article deals with the role that German language plays in our country, and it tries to find answers regarding the Banat region/area, by using the example of the Polytechnic University of Timișoara. Another topic that the author emphasizes is the contribution of German as a foreign language - lessons in promoting the German language and culture in the Banat region.
The present paper aims to analyse the linguistic forms and the discourse strategies used in the written press of the 1950’s in order to unmask the political class enemy and thus to support and validate the political power. The cited examples are taken from the newspaper Neuer Weg and the newspaper Scînteia, which report in many editions show trials of persons who are considered by the political authority to belong to the group of class opponents, those persons being presented in the journalistic texts as class enemy. The language use shows aggressiveness and virulence, schematized linguistic constructions and repetitions, while certain specific features can be identified at lexical, morphosyntactical and pragmatic level. The authoress takes the theoretical stance of sociolinguistics and pragmalinguistics in assessing language facts.

This article refers to a number of translators, who translate from German to Romanian and also to the bibliography of their translations Georg Aescht, Theochar Alexi, Verona Bratesch (Brateş), Maria Dima, Sextil-Iosif Puşcariu, Daniel Friedrich Rhein, Arnold Roth, Christian W. Schenk
The bilingual phraseography with German contains significant shortcomings regarding both the conceptional orientation of the dictionary and the structure of the dictionary articles. The present paper reflects upon the relevance of certain criteria that are decisive for the quality of a dictionary and aims at showing to what extent the description of the selected phraseologisms is adequate with regard to potential users and the specifics of phraseological phenomena.
The article deals with place names/toponyms in Slovene and German, two languages that were in contact since the 8th century. Local names of geographical features are endonyms and differ from the foreign names (exonyms) for the same feature. Since both languages existed at the same territory because of the political reasons, the Slovene ethnic territory was under a strong influence of German language. Because of that German has a lot of german exonyms for Slovene geographical features and the Slovene language has a lot exonyms for geographical features on german territory. For the bilingual region of Austria where a small Slovene minority lives the bilingual endonyms are typical. The pairs of German and Slovene bilingual toponyms were generated also for international regions. The author discusses the types of bilingual geographical names. The knowledge of such bilingual place names is relevant for many issues such as translation and intercultural linguistics.
The DACH concept is meant to offer both german teachers and german learners a theoretical approach for introducing information about german culture and civilization during language classes. It is based on the idea of pluricentricity, meaning that german language is definded on a cultural level by all places where it is spoken, considering Germany, Austria and Switzerland as it main centers. In the following article various course books and exam training materials are beign analysed with the intent to depict the way this concept is transfered from theory into practice.
The present article encompasses the bibliography of Prof. Horst Schuller, researcher, literature Historian and translator.
Erwin Wittstock (1899-1962), the writer of German expression from Romania, has created a monumental body of works (short stories and novels), which stem from German history and culture from Transylvania. The characters he created are projections of his own life. His novel Januar ’45 oder Die höhere Pflicht, reviewed in the present article from an intercultural point of view, is dedicated to the problem of deportation, a topic which was taboo in the communist regime. His work on the topic is shaped into a novel in Balzacian style, the author writing from the perspective of an eye witness. The problematic invites the description of power, of terror and of repression in totalitarian states. As member of the German community in Romania he depicts the Transylvanian multiethnic and multicultural society in his fiction. The elements of interculturality in his novel can be summarized as: social interethnic relations, imagology, respectively the outlining of the image of otherness, also on a linguistic level.
