This paper presents the faunistic results of three short field excursions conducted in spring and early summer of 2018 in Kosovo, considering dragonfly fauna one of the most understudied countries of Europe. This study presents first systematic dragonfly research in Kosovo. Within a total of 13 field days between end of April and end of June 2018, 60 sites were surveyed and 44 dragonfly species were found. Significant results include the first documented report of 15 species for Kosovo. New data on several other species with a broader European concern or generally rare on the West Balkan peninsula, i.e. Coenagrion ornatum, Anax ephippiger, Caliaeschna microstigma, Cordulegaster heros, C. bidentata, Somatochlora flavomaculata, and Sympetrum flaveolum, are also presented. The overview of all visited sites is included. Altogether, 47 dragonfly species are now reported for Kosovo.
Virpazaria Gittenberger, 1969 is distributed in the Balkan Peninsula (Albania, Montenegro and Croatia) and inhabits the shallow subterranean habitat (MSS) on limestone base rock. Reviewing historical and recently collected material, two species, Virpazaria (Virpazaria) gittenbergeri Fehér & Erőss sp. nov. and Virpazaria (Virpazaria) pesici Fehér & Deli sp. nov., are introduced as new to science. The conservation status of the new species are assessed using IUCN criteria. Two taxa, Virpazaria (Virpazaria) pageti alexanderi Reischütz & Subai, 2012 and Virpazaria (Aemiliella) ripkeni pastorpueri Reischütz et al., 2011, are synonymized with their nominate subspecies. Some new distribution records, as well as geological and geomorphological data about the known locations for Virpazaria, are presented.
The present study summarises spider records from East Macedonia and Thrace (NE Greece). Spiders were mainly collected by hand sampling and to a smaller extent by pitfall trapping during field trips in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009. 171 species from 23 families were sampled. Pelecopsis pavida (O. P.-Cambridge, 1872) (Linyphiidae) and Xysticus kaznakovi Utochkin, 1968 (Thomisidae) were new to the European spider fauna and ten further species, Diaea livens Simon, 1876, Heriaeus graminicola (Doleschall, 1852), Meioneta ressli Wunderlich, 1973, Oedothorax retusus (Westring, 1851), Philodromus albidus Kulczynski, 1911, Pocadicnemis pumila Keyserling, 1880, Sitticus saltator (O. P.-Cambridge, 1868), Stemonyphantes lineatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Synageles scutiger Prószynski, 1979 and Thanatus coloradensis Keyserling, 1880, could be added to the Greek fauna for the first time. 21 and 38 species were new to East Macedonia and Thrace, respectively. Based on previous work, plus the present study, the Greek spider fauna now includes 1,108 species.
