This paper introduces two literary representations of Moses, the lawgiver from the Old Testament. These two portrayals (Schiller, Goethe) are a part of the Moses-discourse that stretches over centuries. Here they are compared to the popular scientific Moses-study "Das Leben Mosis" (1868) written by Hermann Reckendorf, the author from Jihlava.
The aim of this study is to present two older literary adaptations of the tragic life story of King Otakar (Ottokar) II – the "classic" play "König Ottokars Glück und Ende" by the Austrian dramatist Franz Grillparzer and the now forgotten drama "Král Přemysl Otakar Druhý" by the Czech author František Zavřel. The article focuses on the controversial depiction of the king and his Czech subjects, which led to a number of angry protests from Czech audiences. The study also explores the causes of the "anti-Czech sentiment" which is said to be found in these plays.
The article examines issues connected with the translation of certain specific concepts and aspects of reality in the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, i.e. the liturgy of the Eastern Churches. The author focuses on modern Orthodox German translations of this liturgy in the context of issues related to the translation of selected specific concepts and aspects of reality from the Greek and Old Church Slavonic original texts into modern German. The article also examines the translation of theological terminology. The analysis applies the theory of text filters, which is currently a widely used approach in translation criticism.
Wartburg castle is associated not only with Luther's German translation of the Bible, but also with the legendary singing contest that is said to have taken place there in the early 13th century. Although today it is impossible to tell whether this was a real event or merely a legend, the contest became a popular basis for literary treatments. The "classic" version of the story was presented in the 19th century by Richard Wagner in his opera "Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg", while the most recent version of the story dates from 2012: Robert Löhr's novel "Krieg der Sänger". Because Löhr's version was almost immediately compared with Wagner's, the aim of this study is to analyze the two works and draw conclusions from such a comparison. Which sources did both authors work with, and how? Were they primarily concerned with a historically accurate depiction of events, entertaining the reader or audience, or communicating some deeper thoughts? In what light are the main hero and his competitors presented? What do Wagner and Löhr have in common, and how do they differ?
During the last two decades of the 20th century writers gradually returned to traditional narrative methods, though their works were creatively enriched by the incorporation of new tendencies. The results of these efforts show traces of literary postmodernism. One of the representatives of German-language postmodern literature is Sten Nadolny, whose oeuvre is typified by its openness to the plurality and diversity of the world. His novel "Ein Gott der Frechheit" revives ancient gods and mythological figures, revealing the mysteries of old legends; this is viewed as a background to the self-destructive disorientation of contemporary society.
The article examines the reception of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's works by two Czechoslovak authors writing in German: Max Brod and Josef Mühlberger. The reception of Hofmannsthal's oeuvre is reflected primarily in Brod's novel "Mira", Brod's correspondence with Hofmannsthal, and Mühlberger's essay "Hugo von Hofmannsthal". The article explores how both authors depict the Viennese poet and what they consider to be Hofmannsthal's main significance and legacy for future generations. The article also compares Brod's and Mühlberger's statements with thematically similar texts by the Austrian author.
The article analyzes two early works by Hugo von Hofmannsthal: Das kleine Welttheater and Das Märchen der 672. Nacht. The author focuses on artistically perceptive characters: the poet and artist (in Das kleine Welttheater) and the "dilettante" (in Das Märchen der 672. Nacht). Using examples of the analyzed characters, the article attempts to define the features that are typical of the artist and the dilettante, explains the concepts of "pre-existence" and "existence" and gives an account of their importance in Hofmannsthal's work. The author characterizes the artistically perceptive characters on the basis of these concepts.
The study deals with the contacts between Princess Mechtilde Lichnowsky and the Prague German writer Franz Werfel in the years 1913–1914. The author outlines the friendly relationship between Mechtilde and Werfel, sketching the social and biographical background on the eve of World War I. In this context, attention is paid not only to Mechtilde Lichnowsky's drama "Ein Spiel vom Tod", but also to its reception by Werfel, by other authors, and not least by the contemporary press.
The Přemyslid King Otakar II is one of the most prominent figures in Czech (and Central European) history. However, he is also a highly controversial figure, primarily due to his unflagging support for the German-speaking communities on his territory, which figures such as František Palacký considered to be excessive. The theme of German medieval colonization and Czech/German coexistence naturally appears in literary works dealing with Otakar's life. The Austrian dramatist Franz Grillparzer's play "König Ottokars Glück und Ende" is no exception. The topic of German colonization is relatively peripheral within the work, however the brief scene featuring the King and the burghers of Prague (who protest at Prague Castle against the expulsion of the Czechs and the settlement of Germans in their place) so incensed the Czech literary scene that the work has still not yet been translated into Czech. This article aims to analyze the scene in question, comparing Grillparzer's drama with the novel "Královský úděl" by the Czech author Nina Bonhardová.
The early 20th century is associated with many terrible events in Europe's wartime history. The loss of historical awareness and the attempt to reconcile oneself with the wartime past is the subject of many novels. The theme of alienation and deracination as a result of the horrors of war is treated by W. G. Sebald in his novel 'Austerlitz'. The hero of the novel, having experienced the horrors of the Holocaust, is condemned to a lifetime of remembering, which uncovers terrible secrets that were never meant to be revealed.
Von den Toten auferstehen: aktiv oder passiv? : Oder zur Übersetzung eines religiösen Liedtextes
(2012)
This study deals with the translation of Gustav Mahler's "Resurrection Symphony". The first two stanzas of the text were written by the German poet Klopstock; the next two were added by Mahler himself. In the lyrics of this song two different world-views are confronted with each other – the view of a Lutheran Christian (Klopstock) and the view of an philosophically educated Jew (Mahler). The translation is based on a translation project used for teaching purposes. We evaluated the eight best student translations according to theoretical maxims, and also focused on relevant issues which arose during the translation. These included e.g. the translation of religious texts and lexis (bearing in mind that the lyrics are written by authors with different attitudes), the problem of archaization versus modernization in the lyrics, and also the issue of losses and shifts.
Mein Weg zu den Märchen
(2010)
The aim of this article is to systematize selected existing definitions of texts and, from the perspective of research into text comprehension, to compare and contextualize the most frequent concepts applied in the field. These concepts are used in the description of the basic phases and aspects of the text comprehension process; they may be divided into three groups depending on whether they denote the comprehension process itself, the results of this process, or the properties of text. This division should not be viewed as an immutable set of concepts, but rather as a starting point for research into issues of text comprehension and comprehensibility.
The author of the study examines the relations between the poetry of the German expressionist Georg Heym (1887–1912), the Austrian expressionist Georg Trakl (1887–1914), and Czech literature, especially poetry. Both these authors are representatives of early expressionism. Heym is also known in the Czech lands through the translations of Bohuslav Reynek, František Vrba, Ivan Slavík, Ludvík Kundera and Radek Malý. Trakl's work affected the development of modern Czech poetry through translations by Bohuslav Reynek. Specific and significant manifestations of Trakl's influence can already be found in the work of Bohuslav Reynek and in the first two collections by František Halas. In varying degrees, the authors have left traces in the poetry of František Hrubín, Vilém Závada and Jan Zahradníček. The echoes of Trakl's poetry can be heard in the 1960s in the work of the poet Zbyněk Hejda.
The premise of this paper is that there is a special trait which authors writing in German – but having a different mother tongue – have in common: compared to authors whose mother tongue is German, they show a more distinct sensitivity for the peculiarities of language, a more intense preoccupation with language phenomena, and a habit of critically questioning linguistic conventions, i.e. overall they display a greater awareness of language. Using the examples of Libuše Moníková, Jiří Gruša and Michael Stavarič, the paper shows how their German texts become alienated through elements from their mother tongue and how these authors make use of their bilingualism in their creative way of handling the foreign language.
This article analyses the essay "Gefühle bei Besuchung des Schönhofer Garten" by Jan Quirin Jahn (1739–1802), published in 1797 in the magazine "Apollo". The description of the English garden in Schönhof (Krásný Dvůr), the oldest of its kind in Bohemia, is seen in the light of aesthetic and theoretical discussions. The impression determines the reception of the new art of garden design. Jahn's literary walk through the garden of Schönhof also testified that new forms of aesthetic perception were intensively received in Bohemia.
Mysticism means the verbalization of mystic experiences, or more precisely the verbalization of "unio mystica – the unification of the religious "I" with the absolute, and, in Christianity, with God. An interesting body of German mystic literature has survived from the medieval period, beginning with the "St. Trudperter Hohenlied" (around 1160). In "conjugal mysticism", the "unio" is viewed and verbalized as an experience of love, while speculative mysticism (especially as represented by the Dominicans) formulates a "different" theology, written primarily in German. These new mystical experiences require a new approach to language, i.e. methods of nomination which recall the principles of naming based on the use of metaphor and word-formation in professional language.
The article focuses on traditional expressive schemata used in the collection "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" to depict scenes of eroticism and sexuality. The analysis is based on the observation that the dominant emotion in the collection is love – which is often described in erotic terms in the songs – and that the collection is dominated by songs from the medieval period, meaning that it contains schemata which are frequently euphemistic in character and have been passed down since the period of Minnesang.
The friendly relationship between the renowned Munich doctor Wilhelm Schenk von Stauffenberg and the Austrian author Hugo von Hofmannsthal can be viewed in terms of the writer's life and work. This study traces the contacts between the two men, describes their shared interests and shows how Hofmannsthal planned to depict Stauffenberg in his works. These issues are viewed against the background of Stauffenberg's and Hofmannsthal's friendship with Countess Mechtilde Lichnowsky, who introduced the two men in 1909; the paper traces the mutual contacts until Stauffenberg's death in 1918.
The theme of Wagner's opera 'Tannhäuser' is the conflict between the artist and society, between nonconformism and servility to the dictates of a regime, with all its dogmas and taboos. This theme remains real and 'modern' to this day, and it has been acted out several times in German history. 'Truth fanatics' – artists, academics and intellectuals – have repeatedly been ostracized, boycotted or mocked. One such figure was Alfred Döblin, nowadays a half-forgotten novelist who returned to post-war Germany after several years of exile to participate in the country's spiritual regeneration. Döblin's novel 'Hamlet oder Die lange Nacht nimmt ein Ende' – begun during the writer's Hollywood exile – can be viewed as a work of 'Trauerarbeit' – a way of dealing with the Nazi past. This paper examines the questions asked by Döblin and the problems he faced in the nascent Federal Republic of Germany, using his 'Hamlet' as a source of illustrative examples. Wagner's 'Tannhäuser' – a work to which Döblin was strongly drawn – serves as a framework.
The poetic language of the Nobel Prize winner Nelly Sachs has already been examined from several points of view. Nelly Sachs has often been mentioned in connection with Klopstock and Hölderlin owing to her 'high tone' (cf. e.g. Paul Hoffmann's article 'On Nelly Sachs' Pathos' from 1994).
However, even earlier than the style which Hoffmann characterized as the "seed of the concise, hermetic late style with a more moderate pathos", literary techniques other than pathetic speech can be found in the work of Nelly Sachs. In the poems 'WE ARE SO sore', 'SOMEONE COMES', 'A PUNCH' behind a hedge, there is a laconic style, far removed from all hermeticism, which is able precisely to depict the impact of the Shoah on its survivors. This style seems to be cognate with Kaschnitz's late elliptical works, Celan's "greyer language", and Bachmann's laconic poems, all from the 1960s. It is this particular style that is examined in this article.
Die emotionale Bedeutung der grünen Farbe in den Liedern der Sammlung "Des Knaben Wunderhorn"
(2011)
Colour symbolism is one of the means of expressing emotion. This paper focuses on the colour green, whose symbolism is derived from nature. In the collection 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn', green occurs in emotional contexts as a means of overcoming grief or in connection with love and eroticism, as it provides lovers with an environment in which to express their love. Green also occurs as an attribute in erotic symbols and in descriptions of the springtime awakening of the countryside, where it conveys joy and hope.
The article deals with the analysis of linguistic structures which are used in the language of contemporary drama to intensify the expression of emotion. A corpus of four postmodern dramas was compiled for this purpose: 'Tätowierung' by Dea Loher (1992), 'Herr Kolpert' by David Gieselmann (2000), 'Schwimmen wie Hunde' by Reto Finger (2004), and 'Ein Teil der Gans' by Martin Heckmanns (2007). The article is based on the hypothesis that the emotional level of a text can be expressed via linguistic means displaying strong intensity. A theoretical justification of this hypothesis is followed by the analysis of the corpus texts.
(2011)
Using the example of Beate Teresa Hanika's debut novel 'Rotkäppchen muss weinen', the author demonstrates how the basic emotion of fear is manifested in literature for young people. The article presents both the ways in which this emotion is depicted explicitly and the ways in which it is implicitly thematized on several levels of language. In conclusion, drawing also on a previous study of the manifestation of fear in children’s literature, the author addresses the question of whether there are differences in the expression of fear depending on the age of the producers and/or receivers.
Taktéž biografie kněžny Mechtildy Lichnowské (1879–1958) je protkána přátelstvími s německy a anglicky píšícími autory, hudebními skladateli a v neposlední řadě soudobými malíři.
Ta vznikla při oslavě 50. výročí manţelského slibu Johanna Josefa Antona Eleasara Kittela a Anny Marie 25. 11. 1777 v Šumburku. Ani české, ani německé kázání nebylo nikdy publikováno zcela. Jde o homiletické texty, proto měli oba kazatelé omezenou moţnost pouţití emotivních jazykových výrazů a prostředků. Ty slouţily k podchycení pozornosti posluchačů. Kázání měla dvojí funkci: věroučnou a poučnou. Upevņovala povědomí o Boţích zákonech a uváděla je do kaţdodenního ţivota.
This study explores the changing culture of emotions and forms of love in German literature of the late 18th century. The paper attempts to demonstrate that love as a passion is not primarily a natural phenomenon, but a cultural one. The main part of the study presents three interpretations. Firstly, using Sophie von La Roche's novel "Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim", the author shows that in the age of sentimentalism the notion of love was based on loving oneself (amour propre). The second interpretation focuses on Goethe's "Die Leiden des jungen Werther" and concludes that the main function of love in this text is to make uncorrupted authentic communication possible in a world otherwise alienated by conventions. The final interpretation turns to Goethe's "Briefe aus der Schweiz" and "Römische Elegien", outlining love as a special form of hermeneutics of life and a fundamental condition for the process of creation.
Emotionen in Comics
(2010)
