"... die werdent ouch Helmbrehtel!" : Zu den Prager und Wiener "Helmbrechten" im Spätmittelalter
(1987)
This article takes a new look at the novels of the Austrian Jewish writer Adolf Dessauer (1849-1916). Dessauer wrote an ironic chronicle of his contemporaries' world in turn-of-the-century Vienna. A banker by profession and an amateur novelist, he published two novels in his lifetime ("Götzendienst", in 1896, and "Großstadtjuden", in 1910), both taking place in the Habsburg capital, which was then undergoing a process of rapid economic and social change. Though his books are nowadays virtually forgotten, Dessauer was a very accurate chronicler of the customs of the social class which ascended with economic liberalism, and which became increasingly close to the empire's declining aristocracy, mimicking its tastes and habits.
As opposed to what happened in other European nations, the bourgeoisie in the Habsburg Empire never attempted to construct its own aesthetic and cultural repertoire, but consistently imitated the aristocratic patterns of its time. Dessauer makes a biting and ironical portrait of this class and its attempt at aristocratic appearances.
He also shows how Karl Lueger's Christian anti-Semitic party in Austria recruited its voters from the impoverished class of artisans, which had lost space as a consequence of the establishment of a new economic order. Lueger's political campaign was directed towards this growing class, and he identified the rise of liberal capitalism with Jews and Judaism.
In "Großstadtjuden" Dessauer looks at the same phenomena, but does so from a strictly Jewish point of view. His second novel portrays the reactions of a number of Jewish families from Vienna to rising anti-Semitism. This historical aspect of the Viennese Jewish community, which was Europe's numerically largest after Warsaw's, is a striking prelude to the history of European Jewry in the 20th.century, thus giving Dessauer's work an unexpected afterlife.
This article emphasizes that the central element of the satanic pact in Goethe’s Faust is the driving force of modernity: the negation of the present. In contrast to traditional interpretations of Faust as a positive figure and his "striving" as a virtue of modern man, the author argues that the destructive side of Faust’s restlessness should be examined. The effective counterpoints of the rhythm of modernity, as Goethe himself suggests in the play, are religion (in its broader unconventional sense, and classically inspired art, which enable thought to "stop" in the present moment.
The article traces the development of Günter Grass's work with special emphasis on his reception in Germany and his being awarded the Nobel Prize. It shows how Grass employs traditional narrative strategies, particularly that of the fairy-tale, and how he represents the recent German past in figures of the unreal. By these means his texts are able to show the grotesqueness of historical reality in the 20th century.
A língua como pátria
(2006)
It is our aim to focus on certain aspects of the complex relationship between language – particularly German – and homeland/identity as seen in the work of a number of Jewish poets and authors. Initially we wish to point out this conflicting relationship in the work of Paul Celan and Rose Ausländer, two Jewish poets born in Romania. The examples of Viktor Klemperer and Ruth Klüger emphasize the complexity of this specific characteristic in the biography/work of German authors of Jewish origin. Elias Canetti, the Nobel Laureate born in Bulgaria, is a literary personality whose biography shows the importance of German culture influence in Eastern Europe at the beginning of the Twentieth Century: Canetti considers himself a German poet who belongs to the German-speaking cultural and literary world.
The poem "Zurich, zum Storchen" by Paul Celan is often read as a document on the tension between Celan and Nelly Sachs, which resulted particularly from their different attitudes to the Shoah. However if the poem is read in connection with the cycle "Die Niemandsrose" and with Celan’s poetological thinking at this time, Celan’s opposite standpoint means much more than a theological discussion: it serves for the affirmation of human presence.
The article studies the German-speaking poetess Nelly Sachs, who received the Nobel-Prize for literature in 1966, together with Shmuel Agnon. In order to shed light upon the behind the decision of the jury, an overview on life and work of the author will be given and a number of poems will be analyzed.
This article points out facts that help to explain why Franz Kafka was not awarded the Nobel Prize.
This paper examines the decisive importance which the work of Switzerland's only – albeit now completely forgotten – Nobel Prize winner for Literature had on the development of Swiss prose in the 20th century, and all this without receiving any critical attention whatsoever. The article will also try to give an answer to one of the most frequently asked questions: why such a prestigious award was granted to an author whose name has not managed to travel beyond the borders of Switzerland or the limits of his lifetime.
This article suggests a possible meaning of the concept of "Bildungsroman". It analyzes Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister Lehrjahre", a novel that is considered the model of this kind of narrative and argues that Goethe shows how the union of action and contemplation is an ideal required to create a balanced humanist man. It also discusses Novalis' "Heinrich von Ofterdingen" as an anti-model to Goethe.
This paper deals with the image of Spain and how it is misrepresented in the German historical narratives written during the exile period. This misrepresentation is due on the one hand to the writers' lack of knowledge of the historical context in which their works were set and on the other hand to the individual motivation of the authors themselves. Through an examination of the two novels which Lion Feuchtwanger set in Spain, "Die Jüdin von Toledo" and "Goya", this article will try to analyse how in both cases the Spanish context offered the author the perfect frame to build the plot and the scenes and relate it to the historical moment Germany was experiencing. Furthermore, literary images and motifs will also be taken into consideration in order to prove how the reality of Spain in two very particular moments of its history was distorted in both novels.
The article describes and analyses the attitudes of ruling and opposing elites towards the cultural and architectural heritage as it is articulated in the novels of two prominent authors of the intellectual opposition in Western (Böll) and Eastern Germany (Loest). Böll emphasizes the necessity of destroying cultural patrimony in order to recover its memorial function in the west, whereas Loest pleads for the resistance: against the official policy of destruction in the east. Preservation of historical monuments in both cases is seen in function of the interests of the living generation, not as a value in itself.
The whole of 24 poems belonging to the cycle of "Roman Elegies" may be seen as an attempt by Goethe to recover and reintegrate sexuality as a natural human function, a project authorized and shielded by the amatory elegy genre but opposed to the morality of his contemporaries. His aim was also to promote a public acceptance for his new way of living, which was commonly considered as immoral and consisted in the , illicit relationship with Christiane Vulpius. The original cycle gives more explicit clues about the intentions and ideas of Goethe than the 20 elegies which he published in 1795, but the censured version still permitted a change in the public opinion of Goethe.
Instituto Martius-Staden is a German-Brazilian institution of culture, history, and language in São Paulo. Founded in 1916 as an association of German teachers, the institute survived difficult times in the fourth and fifth decades of the century. The main problems were the laws and rules of the Vargas-period and the attempted ideological expansion of Nazi-Germany. The institute set up arquives and a library of German immigration and gathered a huge collection of mainly Brazilian-based German newspapers. In later years library sections of arts, German literature, and history were added. Since 1953 the institute has issued an annual publication named "Staden Jahrbuch" with contributions of renowned authors mainly on Brazil.
The purpose of this paper is to present to the Brasilian reader some aspects of the most important German prose text from the 17th century, the novel 'Simplicissimus Teutsch' (1668), and its author, Hans Jacob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen (1621/2-1676). In addition, it treats Grimmelshausen's possible contacts with the political theories of his time.
Brecht's early play 'Baal' contains an allusion to Brazil. The interpretation of the image of Brazil designed in this play might raise a profitable discussion in order to introduce Brecht's theatre into the classroom and to motivate the students to study it. Therefore, the present paper suggests that the study of Brecht's theater should be started with the analysis of his first play and sketches a possible way to do this.
This article discusses some aspects of Brecht's work and its relationship with the Brazilian literary, historical and socio-political life. The focus is on the inconsistency of the struggle for the so-called Bildung, where the advances of new ideas and social forms are in conflict with a reactionary context.
This paper discusses the profile of German Studies in the context of interdisciplinary intercultural area studies, as it has been developed during the last decades at universities in the United States, particularly at the University of California at Berkeley. In its first part, it deals with the institutional history of German Studies, in the second, with the underlying cultural theory, and in the third, with its hermeneutic practice.
This essay considers the present state of U.S. scholarship on German exile Literature, focusing on the recent move from a purely literary toward a social and cultural perspective. This move becomes evident in research projects on refugee children as well as in the growing interest for women in exile. The article presents the abundant research opportunities in the U.S., but mentions also voices of frustration and fatigue. Perhaps the generational replacement among North-American Germanists contributes to bring forth a different attitude toward the subject of literary exile. In view of political shifts and technological changes, some reorientation in literary exile studies may be inevitable.
This paper presents some of the major aspects of the history of German exile after 1933 and the history of the exile of German-speaking writers and intellectuals in Brazil. The second part of the title is focused on the works of exile written by Ulrich Becher and Hugo Simon in Brazil.
Wilhelm Voßkamp (University of Cologne) was visiting professor of German Literature at the University of Säo Paulo during the first semestre of 1997. This interview, given to Willi Bolle (USP), focuses on the following questions: 1. His most important professional and historical experiences; 2. the concept of formation (Bildung); 3. comparison of trends in Philosophy and the Humanities in Germany and France in the last decades; 4. the crisis cf education in the 60s, its causes and attempted solutions; 5. the history and tradition of Literary Studies and the Humanities; 6. modernization and interdisciplinarity; 7. scientific language: English v German; 8. deutsche Germanistik and German Studies; 9. Estudos Germánicos in Brazil; 10. utopia and tradition in Brazil and Germany; 11. institutional utopias; 12. Transformation of the humanities in Germany after unification.
This paper is meant to be an introduction to the works of Hubert Fichte. It presents some passages from his texts that help to understand his ethnopoetics.
In this article, we try to identify characteristics of German Expressionism in contemporary literature and its possible variations. The focus will be on the generation conflict and the text "Suchbild über meinen Vater" by Christoph Meckel (1980).
In expressionist poetry we can detect a first major rupture in the relations between man and nature. In expressionist poems such as "Weltende" ("The end of the world") by Jakob van Hoddis, we can read and see the fear and distrust of man in face cf the progress that the industrial revolution has brought. The theme of the destruction of nature in our days caused by modern/post-modern technology may be also read and seen in German literature of the eighties, as for example in the poems of Sarah Kirsch, in which she shows concrete landscapes,
poisoned rivers, forests and air.
This paper examines avant-garde literature in the GDR, especially works written by Irmtraud Morgner and Heiner Müller.
The analysis of the Drama "Die Verfolgung und Ermordung Jean Paul Marats dargestellt durch die Schauspielgruppe des Hospizes zu Charenton unter der Anleitung des Herrn de Sade" (1964) by Peter Weiss shows how the author used surrealistic elements such as the theme of madness and the illogical structure of a play within a play. With this play, Weiss was enormously popular throughout the world, and his success as a modern German dramatist is second only to Brecht.
Alfred Döblin is a theorist of German Expressionismus and of the epic novel. In "Berlin Alexanderplatz", he shows the theories of his essay "Der Bau des epischen Werks" ("The construction of the epic werk") in practice. The present paper analyses the following aspects of the novel: 1) the development of the plot, 2) the structure, 3) the language, 4) the function of time, 5) the space of the city, 6) the narrator, 7) the characters.
