Johann Jakob Bodmer is regarded as the ‘father of Minnesang-research’. The article attempts a critical analysis of this claim. It traces the reception of the most important manuscript of Minnesang, the ‘Manesse’ manuscript (as Bodmer called it) since Melchior Goldast (1604) and its ‘discovery’ by Bodmer. He claims his position as the discoverer of Minnesang on three points: the patriotic, the poetic analogy and the ‘revelatory’. (...) Diese Studie soll, von Bodmers Leistungen ausgehend, zeigen, was die nachfolgende Generation damit und daraus gemacht hat, soll auch auf andere Traditionen hinweisen und den Neuansatz der Romantik, vor allem in Gestalt der Mittelalter-Aneignung Tiecks, charakterisieren – die Neubegründung, die dann durch die Grimms im Sinn einer umfassenden Wissenschaft vom deutschen Altertum auf der Basis des romantischen Poesiebegriffs und durch Karl Lachmann als idealistische Philologie erfolgt.
