The present paper aims to analyse the language use in the interactive field of online comments, which appeared in the online discussion site of the Siebenbürgische Zeitung Online forum. The analyse focuses on the performance of the speech act sanctioning at the linguistic level – lexical, morphological, syntactic, pragmatic. The participants to the process of interaction, who are members of the Siebenbürger Sachsen association, introduce discussion topics on the political situation in Romania or reply to others’ comments by taking a stand on the topics. The authoress takes the theoretical stance of pragmalinguistics, speech act theory and intercultural communication in assessing language facts.
The author, attracted to the Romanian poetry written during the inter-war period, tried to translate into German some of the poems wirtten by Ion Pillat and Ion Barbu. From this pursuit he could learn a lot, not only thanks to his inclination towards the original text, by interpreting it from a semantic point of view, but also by searching the lexical equivalents established in the target-language. In the magazine, there are introduced poets that belong to the younger generation and so, he managed to approach their licirical creations more as a translator, especially those written by Nichita Stănescu and Ioan Alexandru. At the same time, the author narrates some of his experiences regarding the folklore poetry, his steps concerning the translation of the ballads written originally by Transylvanian Saxons in the literary German. Moreover, he does not fail to outline the realization of a short edition from the piece of work, created in Latin by the Transylvanian humanist Christian Schesäus, the poem Istoria Anei Kendi, translated with the help of a few contributors in Romanian, Hungarian and German.
The following paper presents the 17th volume on German studies Kronstädter Beiträge zur Germanistischen Forschung 2017. The volume deals with constructions of masculinity and femininity in German culture, literature and language. Through its various articles the volume delineates the way masculinity and femininity are constructed in everyday life, as well as in literature and in language.
The aim of this paper is to show how Grimmelshausen uses forms of addressing and which factors are important for the choice of address in the novel Simplicissimus. The research of indirect speaking in novel texts of the baroque is a desiderate in science. The result is: Often pragmatic motives of situation figure rather the choice of address then conventions of social classes. The balance between power semantic and solidary semantic as well as human affects and emotions regulate how literary characters are addressing other characters. The reason for that is that most authors refer to novel texts with members of the society’s elite. Contrary it can be argued that Grimmelshausen uses many different levels of society. Therefore, we can suppose, that our investigation makes the understanding of how politeness is working round. It is based on knowledge of a dynamic language.
The research of phraseology in fiction has gained importance from its wide potential of its application in modern literature. This creative linguistic phenomenon manifests itself primarily in the branch of “author phraseologism”. Author phraseologism indicates the phraseological units that appear in the works of a certain author; these units may occur frequently or may occur in isolated cases throughout the his/her work. Author phraseologism is regarded as a main source of creative expressions. If these creative expressions are subjected to circulation and wide usage, they develop into established phraseologisms that become well-known to the public. A renowned exemplification of this is the quotation from Hamlet “to be or not to be, that is the question”. Generally, these author phraseologisms have certain functions to fulfil; they give the literary work a semantic and aesthetic value.
Therefore, this paper attempts to explore Peter's active creative work on his poetic language since he rarely tends to use the fairly frozen idiomatic phrases that have widely been used before his time. This research paper analyses these creative phrases syntactically, semantically and metaphorically by identifying the phraseological potential, aesthetic value and poetic function in some of Peter's short stories.
The selected short stories of Peters that are analysed, are a part of the most modern literary works. This could be the reason for that his newly created phrases, have not been acknowledged as fixed phrases yet. The fact that the phrases are not repeated within the same story or in other works by himself, may be one of the reasons for that the investigated examples cannot be considered as anchored phraseologisms.
What gives this paper importance is the study of the creative language of Peters. Furthermore, this paper contributes to synchronous and documentary research of phraseology in the German literature. Peter's works has been previously studied from a literary and cultural point of view, however the linguistic aspects of his works were not given sufficient attention.
This scientific article focuses on Ursula Ackrill’s novel ˮZeiden, im Januarˮ and its aim is to examine the specificity of present-day literature of the Transylvanian Saxons. Starting from the methodological considerations of Jan Assmann and Aleida Assmann, the concept of memorial culture will be exemplified and analyzed through relevant scenes of the novel, in close connection with Leontina Philippi’s approach of writing the chronicle of Codlea. Antonescu’s fascist dictatorship, the obligation for Saxon men to serve in the SS troops, the friendly collaboration between Antonescu and Hitler, the collaboration between German and Saxon military, the role of collaborators at that time, the Saxons’ customs and traditions, the portrait of the Jew of Lipscani street, Bucharest society during the rule of Ion Antonescu are just a few aspects of the novel which emphasize the intercultural character of this writing on the basis of communicative and cultural memory.
Considering the sixty years long existence of the German weekly in Braşov an exhaustive research of the publication on the way from a centralized to a globalized socio-political system becomes imperious. Our article represents a first approach to pinpoint the choice of poetry published by the German weekly Karpatenrundschau during the nineteen eighties and nineteen nineties as a consequence of both political compromise and aesthetic demand. In this respect the article analyses the German weekly as one of the main promoters of German poetry written in Romania. The article is based on our research done in the archives of the weekly in Braşov.

Adam Müller-Guttenbrunnʻs novels on homeland and on his age are a precious documentas, They show the Suabian village not only with its customs but they also shed light on its social structures. The reflection on tradition and the education towards a political task make up the goal of these autobiographically marked novels, which stand as symbols of the Suabian presence in the Banat. In his homeland novels Götzendämmerung (The Dusk of Idols) and Glocken der Heimat (The Homeland Bells) the author sets up a monument to the friendly relationship between the Germans and Romanians. Guttenbrunn‘s books actually overstep the social and historical limits of images and thereby take on a kind of representative importance for the research.
This article is dedicated to the intercultural aspects of Paul Schuster’s stories (1930-2004), a German writer, born in Sibiu, regarded by German literary historians and criticists as one of the most talented prose writers descending from the small German cultural enclave of Transylvania. His work is thematically focused on events of the past century; The German minority he belongs to plays a decisive role, but also its cohabitation with different ethnic groups in Romania as well as the interethnic relations between them. Interculturality in Paul Schuster's stories is revealed on several levels: cultural exchanges between different ethnic groups, aspects of interethnic collaboration, imagology, linguistic interferences and translations from Romanian authors.
The border experience is the basic experience in the novel Engelszungen. There are characters who escape, emigrate, moving between several countries whose identity is unstable and changing. Life between cultures and with different identities determined their nomadic wandering around, where the transit movement as the basic experience has also a political dimension. The scientific contribution analyzes inner and outer boundaries, examines identitary border crossings, illuminates the major characters, their different identity designs, the restless in theirwandering and strategies of adaptation to the West.
The study deals with the large variety of judicial trials found in the records of the magistrate and judge of Sibiu of the 16th and 17th century. The topics of the magistratedocuments include heritage, the changing of the property right, guild regulations, rules for day laborers and servants and even orders regarding the number of persons that could attend to a feast and the number of dishes that should be served. The judicial papers deal with litigations, robberies, unpaid debts, frauds, adultery, crime and witchcraft trials.
This article addresses a little discussed popular phenomenon, namely that of internet memes as a manifestation of public criticism in the online space. Internet memes are pieces of entertainement with an extremely adaptable repertoire, defined by unexpected word associations, sentences, retorts, purposely modified images, which become viral by replication. The variation forms, the parody, puns, humorous, ironically-sarcastic allusions to current events, socially important topics, or statements of public figures make it clear how the modifications of a message built around some suggestive images with an obviously telling statement can get political relevance.
Nowadays, the Bukovinian writer and psychiatrist Robert Flinker is a familiar name only to those interested in the German literature of Bukovina. His literary legacy, which consists of poems, stories and two novels, was published more than twenty years after his death. This paper intends to analyze Flinker’s novels, Der Sturz [The Downfall] and Fegefeuer [Purgatory], from a psychiatric and psychoanalytical perspective. As a psychiatrist in the first half of the 20th century, Flinker was familiar with the benefits of psychoanalysis in treating patients. This raises the question of whether thewriter Robert Flinker was influenced by the new psychoanalytical discoveries and, if so, which theories he used in his novels. Moreover, it must be taken into consideration that Flinker, who had Jewish origins, wrote his novels during the Second World War. In this regard, the socio-cultural context had an impact on Flinker’s literary work.
This text is based on the novelette „The Disarmed Bullet – The Frost Pattern On the Thirteenth” by Walther Gottfried Seidner (from the prose volume „On The Cloud Called Transylvania, A Paradise Inmidst Of Hell – Good Night Stories” with a preface by Ph.D. Gerhard Konnerth). Both, research and critical essays on the topic of the deportation of the German minority of Transylvania to the Donetsk valley in Ukraine are marked by the tendency to victimize this ethnis group. The writer Walther Gottfried Seidner publishes his novelette as a reaction against this perspective and as a general humane reflection as well, retelling from the point of view of an six-year-old boy how his mother (a mother of four) is saved by a Russian soldier, who disarms a bullet, lying he would have killed the woman, in order for her to stay with her four small children. The story is captured from the memory of the grown-up child, from a distant perspective, valuable for its subjective but very profound reflections. The present analysis focusses on three dimensions of the post-war novelette: 1. The narrative, 2. The characters, 3. The langauge, especially the elements of the German Saxon variety. The novelette is regarded as being representative for the work of the German Saxon author, as it voices a positive humanism in the face of a warlike Regime, in the period of the Iron Curtain. The work can be seen as a cornerstone of the European idea in the context of the 100th jubilee of the Romanian Unity and of 29 years since the Romanian Revolution.
The present article is based on the premise that Europe is currently in context of migration dynamics between 'home' and 'foreign' ideas, between 'soft' strategies of inclusion, social participation on the one hand, and 'hard' tactics ofexclusion of the 'others' or 'Migrants' on the other hand. Against this background and based on some ideas of Zygmunt Bauman, Navid Kermani and Amin Maalouf, I will firstly discuss some factors of the 'We-debate'. Then, using the example of the novel So tun, als ob es regnet of the German-Romanian author Iris Wolff I will analyze how far literature uses translation and multilingualism to initiate a poetological process of understanding others and therefore counteracts cultural we-phantasms in Europe.
The anthology Vînt potrivit pînă la tare. Tineri poeţi germani din România (1982) introduced to Romanian writers and readers a new poetry that used a direct language and referred to the social and political situation of Romania. The authors – Germans from Romania whose texts where translated into Romanian – are Anemone Latzina, Franz Hodjak, Rolf Frieder Marmont, Johann Lippet, William Totok, Richard Wagner, Rolf Bossert, Hellmut Seiler, Horst Samson and Helmut Britz. The young poets engaged during the 1970’s in a dialogue with German literature, which allows an intercultural approach. The publication of the anthology was a daring gesture in the context of the 80’s politics and had also an influence on the poetry of some Romanian poets.
The National Socialist Party took control over Germany in the year 1933, which resulted in an emigration wave among those whom had been persecuted by the party. The author Erich Maria Remarque includes this thematic aspect in a series of three novels and Arc of Triumph is one of them. He combines two different perspectives on exile, on the one hand discussing the societies perception on the emigrant and on the other hand analysing the psychological status of the illegal emigrant. In the following article I intend to depict the imagine of an emigrants destiny, as illustrated by the writer and exemplified by his main character Ravic, who is living illegally in Paris in 1938.
Film is a wonderful means of reflecting upon the identity of the self and the other. A movie like Didi Danquart’s Offset (2006), which deals with intercultural conflicts, even more so. The clash of the Romanian and German cultures depicted in this movie illustrates how the construction of identity – of the self and the other – works.
Until World War 1 tried Adolf Meschendörfer differently to modernize the German-Transylvanian cultural scene. Therefore he published the magazine Die Karpathen (1907-1914), which included the novel Leonore. Roman eines nach Siebenbürgen Verschlagenen. Leonore is in several ways prototypical for the modernity
