This paper gives a critical view to the collective volume Etudes à la loupe… Optikinstrumente und Literatur, edited at the Stefan cel Mare University publishing house Suceava. The contributors propose an ample incursion into optics as a literary motif, opening a multitude of points of view, which serve as guiding cues for interdisciplinary research.
The following paper deals with the volume of studies Stadt-Land-Fluss. Eine kulturwissenschaftliche Deutschlandreise (Ed. Flegel, Silke, Hoffmann, Frank). The book offers a journey through the history and present time of Germany focusing on such national heritage areas as: literature, language, industrial and structural change, environmental protection, federalism, as well as remembering “the past”. The 216-page volume includes twelve essays on German cultural areas and sites of memory: Leipzig, Halle, Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt - as well as regions like the Ruhr and Sachsen-Anhalt. Major streams, such as the Rhine or the Elbe, are also taken into consideration.
The present text focuses on the interdependency of literature and theory since the postmodern period. Due to the shifting of paradigms towards more updated procedures, new approaches have emerged, dealing with the relationship between history and presence, intertextuality and plagiarism, deconstruction and reconstruction. The three sections of the volume address the issues of understanding and analyzing the meaning of a post-postmodern approach in the context of literary theory. The book should be understood as a functional and at the same time motivational instrument, being not only helpful to literary critics, but also to readers of modern literary texts.
The present paper focuses on the importance of urban space within cultural and literary studies. The review presents one of the newest studies in the field – METROPOLEN ALS ORTE DER BEGEGNUNG UND ISOLATION: INTERKULTURELLE PERSPEKTIVEN AUF DEN URBANEN RAUM ALS SUJET IN LITERATUR UND FILM that analyses in its 726 pages the concept of space related to important world metropolises from a literary, cultural, social point of view. Most of the research stresses the importance the multi- and cross-cultural relations that are a constitutive element for spaces of big cities.
This article is a critical presentation of the study Der Zauber des fernen Königreichs. Carmen Sylvas Pelesch-Märchen/Farmecul regatului îndepãrtat. Poveştile Peleşului, (The Magic of the Faraway Kingdom. Carmen Sylva’s Tales of the Pelesh), edited at the Ibidem publishing house in Frankfurt this year. The author proves that – contrary to some opinions in current literary criticism, according to which the works of the queen poet were but recorded and retold Romanian folk tales and legends – Carmen Sylva’s writings are personal works with intrinsic literary value, where themes and motifs from the folklore and mythology or from the Romanian and occidental literature are used only as pre-texts. Silvia Zimmermann’s merit is a significant one, namely that of rediscovering Carmen Sylva who has not only been a creator, but also an important mediator between the Romanian and the German culture.
The reviewed tome gathers 25 studies written by Germanists, historians and German, Austrian, Romanian, Czechoslovak and Hungarian writers. These studies are focused onto the German literature in the South-Western Europe and aim to reveal the background in which various prosperous literary center appeared in several regions of the above mentioned geographic area, but also the characteristic features, the main ways of development and the contribution of some outstanding
personalities.
The present text introduces the anthological volume of Queen-poetess Carmen Sylva Poveştile unei regine [The Stories of a Queen] and highlights the fact that both her prose – tales and stories – and her poems are representative not only of her favorite themes and motifs, but also of the specific stylistic features of the author.
The paper presents Horst Samson’s volume of poetry Kein Schweigen bleibt ungehört -No silence stays unheard (2013). The review focuses on the main themes dealt with: emigration / exile, absurd existence within the Romanian society during the communist period and national socialist past of the former generation of the German ethnics in Romania. Although the themes may seem disparate one from another, the analysis shows eventually similarities in the stances of the lyrical self.
The latest publication of Professor Ioana Crăciun from the University of Bucharest deals with the (de)construction of bourgeois values and norms in the silent movies during the Weimar Republic. In five substantial chapters the author approaches the representation in the silent movies of different aspects which she considers relevant for that epoch. The themes range from the metropolis and its psychopathological aspects, the male homosexuality, the destiny of children, the law-breaking and the Doppelgänger motif.
Adina Lucia Nistor’s recent book focuses on standard German, viewed from the perspective of the morphemic, internalanalysis of one of the essential parts of a sentence, i.e. the nominal group (Nominalgruppe),in opposition to the verbal group (Verbalgruppe).
The present review refers to the work of Silvia Zimmermann Das Königsbild im Werk Carmen Sylvas und in Fotografien des Fürstlich Wiedischen Archivs.[The Kingʼs Image in the Work of Carmen Sylva and on Princely Archive Photographs belonging to the Wied House] The year 2014 had a triple meaning for the first Romanian Royal House: 175 years since the birth of King Charles I (20 April 2014), 145 years since his wedding with princess Elisabeth of Wied (15 November 1869) and the death centenary of King Charles I (10 October 1914, at the Peleș Castle). Silvia Zimmermann selects and comments upon texts and images which depict the reign of Charles I over Romania, a very beneficial period for the development of the country
This review presents Delia Cotârlea’s monography Schreiben unter der Diktatur. Die Lyrik von Anemone Latzina / Writing under Dictatorship The Poetry of Anemone Latzina. In her study, the Romanian Germanist analyses the poetry and the translation work of the Romanian-born German author Annemone Latzina. Delia Cotârlea’s monography comprises a lot of new information, picked up from unpublished diaries, from chronicles published in the print media etc.
The present article is a review of Joachim Wittstock’s last novel: Die uns angebotene Welt. Jahre in Klausenburg [The World offered to us. The Years in Cluj] printed by the ADZ Publishing House of Bucharest in the year 2007.
The following paper presents the 17th volume on German studies Kronstädter Beiträge zur Germanistischen Forschung 2017. The volume deals with constructions of masculinity and femininity in German culture, literature and language. Through its various articles the volume delineates the way masculinity and femininity are constructed in everyday life, as well as in literature and in language.
The 25th Volume of the Germanistische Beiträge Hermanstadt can be viewed as an attempt to reevaluate and recontextualise the works of Joachim Wittstock. Through a shift of perspective towards international Paradigms and a dislocation of the analysed works from canonical interpretational networks the seven contributing scholars achieve to refresh the way we perceive and read Joachim Wittstocks writings.
The following paper presents the latest book Literatur im Streiflicht of Carmen Elisabeth Puchianu, associate professor of the Transilvania University of Braşov. The paper makes a short presentation of all chapters included in Puchianu’s collection of studies. The aim is to give an overview to the specific aspects that the author is dealing with in her research: the literature of Thomas Mann and Franz Kafka, the German-language Literature in Romania setting the main focus on Joachim Wittstock and on the German poetry written in Romania during the oppressive 80ies.
The following paper presents the 12th volume of the Studies on German Language and Literature – Kronstädter Beiträge zur germanistischen Forschung 2010. The theme of the volume is humor, so that each article aims at analyzing various aspects in rendering humor in language and literature.
The following paper presents the 11th volume of the Studies on German Language and Literature – Kronstädter Beiträge zur germanistischen Forschung 2009. The theme of the volume is „Remembering and Forgetting” On the Contribution of German Writing in the Process of Identity Construction in Central and Eastern Europe. Thus, each article aims at analyzing various aspects regarding the role of writing within identity construction.

The present paper reviews the articles published in the 20th volume of the Kronstädter Beiträge zur germanistischen Forschung, which focus on a variety of postmodern elements found within German culture, language, and literature. A special emphasis is set on the person and works of the German author living in Romania Joachim Wittstock, whom the given volume has been dedicated to, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
The present article is an interpretation of Claudia Spiridon-Șerbu’s study on censorship in Romania during the last 30 years of communist rule. Drawing on unreleased documents from the CNSAS (National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives) Archive dwelling on German ethnic authors from Romania, the author paints a vivid picture of the complex phenomenon of literary censorship. The study follows both the official censorship undertaken by the General Office for Press and Publishing and the unofficial prosecution of writers by Securitate agents and their collaborators.
This volume of studies goes back to research work that was carried out as part of a long-standing project, Deutscher Familiennamenatlas (DFA). The DFA and the individual studies record the family names in Germany and the border areas for the first time on the basis of telephone connections (as of 2005) and with a rich map material. The considerations on selected family names gathered here are preliminary studies of the DFA, which are dedicated to family names on -mann.
In this conference volume, edited by Enikö Dácz, scholars from Germany, Croatia, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia, and the United States analyze German-speaking literature from Central and South-Eastern Europe within the theoretical framework of regional and immigration studies.
This edited volume is in part based on a conference organized at the West-Timisoara University in October 2016. The conference marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of a German program at this university, and dedicated a section to the life and work of Richard Wagner, an alumnus of this very department, promotion of 1975. As Enikő Dácz und Christina Rossi explain, the essays have been organized chronologically according to aesthetic and thematic considerations, taking into account Wagner’s early poems and short prose, his essayistic and novelistic works. Given the scant Wagner scholarship, this book is meant as an invitation to discover and to inspire further research on this author’s multifaceted and challenging work.
The following paper presents the 19th volume on German Studies Kronstädter Beiträge zur Germanistischen Forschung 2019. The volume is dedicated to Bertolt Brecht and it contains papers about him andon his activity as a poet, theatre practitioner, playwright and film director, as well as papers on different fields and versatile aspects of German Studies.
German in space and time is a central aspect both from a scientific perspective and from the perspective of one´s own identity preservation within the language island situation. MsGerhild Rudolf’s thesis offers an analysis of the choice of languages within the Evangelical Church A.B. in Romania (ECR) and at the same time a general overview of language change processes within the ECR. There is an irreversible paradigm shift that is taking place along with the ongoing transition from a monolingual to a bilingual linguistic culture in worship. The status of German in the public use of language is also reflected, the efforts of preserving the German language and culture are presented from a current perspective, and the importance of the German minority is discussed historically and in a forward-looking manner. The thesis offers sufficient reason as well to think about future research on the role of the church and of German from different perspectives, to also emphasize the relevance of interdisciplinarity
It has been more than thirty years since Christoph Ransmayr published The Last World to great success despite its intellectually challenging theme, the fictitious search for Publius Ovidius Naso, known as Ovid, who had been sent into exile by emperor Augustus. Ever since then, his writing has attracted the attention of the public, literary critics and scholars alike. Volume 220 of the renowned edition text+kritik has been dedicated entirely to his work. Its editor, Doren Wohlleben, gathered half a dozen contributions meant to map the different intercultural narrative spaces, which are mainly identifiable in the author’s novels and prose writings.
The following review presents an anthology about literary presentations of space or field as a concept described by Pierre Bourdieu in Central Europe. The an-thology is conceived as a case study on the plurilingual Transylvanian town of Brașov in the first half of the 20th century and is the result of a six-year-project at the Institute for Culture and History of Southeastern Europe in Munich. The editors are Enikö Dácz and Réka Jakabházi.

New York formiert.
