The study of lattice gauge theories with Monte Carlo simulations is hindered by the infamous sign problem that appears under certain circumstances, in particular at non-zero chemical potential. So far, there is no universal method to overcome this problem. However, recent years brought a new class of non-perturbative Hamiltonian techniques named tensor networks, where the sign problem is absent. In previous work, we have demonstrated that this approach, in particular matrix product states in 1+1 dimensions, can be used to perform precise calculations in a lattice gauge theory, the massless and massive Schwinger model. We have computed the mass spectrum of this theory, its thermal properties and real-time dynamics. In this work, we review these results and we extend our calculations to the case of two flavours and non-zero chemical potential. We are able to reliably reproduce known analytical results for this model, thus demonstrating that tensor networks can tackle the sign problem of a lattice gauge theory at finite density

Compartmental models are the theoretical tool of choice for understanding single neuron computations. However, many models are incomplete, built ad hoc and require tuning for each novel condition rendering them of limited usability. Here, we present T2N, a powerful interface to control NEURON with Matlab and TREES toolbox, which supports generating models stable over a broad range of reconstructed and synthetic morphologies. We illustrate this for a novel, highly detailed active model of dentate granule cells (GCs) replicating a wide palette of experiments from various labs. By implementing known differences in ion channel composition and morphology, our model reproduces data from mouse or rat, mature or adult-born GCs as well as pharmacological interventions and epileptic conditions. This work sets a new benchmark for detailed compartmental modeling. T2N is suitable for creating robust models useful for large-scale networks that could lead to novel predictions. We discuss possible T2N application in degeneracy studies.
The flora in the Caucasus Ecoregion is rich in economically important plants. While its value in terms of food crops and medicinal plants has recently been subject to scientific research, the ornamental value of many Caucasian plant species has not yet been fully recognized. In order to assess the ornamental value of the Caucasian flora, vegetation data from two mountainous study regions in Georgia (n = 958 species, mostly grassland vegetation) was compared with the product range of ornamental plants in Germany using an online plant shopping guide. Characterization of the 150 plant species listed in both databases revealed that 121 species are present in central Europe and 117 species are natives or archaeophytes in Germany. Thus, only few species are Caucasian endemics. Furthermore, a list of 79 potential ornamentals endemic to the Caucasus was compiled from the literature. In order to place them in context of the horticultural market, the species characteristics were examined. Following this, a critical discussion of the potentials and risks arising from trade with ornamental plants was carried out with regard to nature conservation, biological invasion control, genetic resource maintenance and socioeconomic significance.
Am Ende der 1990er Jahre konnte man durch die Analyse der Metaphern der Alltagssprache schon sehen, "in welche Richtung" man rannte: Und heute leben wir in einer (globalen) Gesellschaft, in der jede Handlung und jeder Lebensbereich unseres Lebens als verwirtschaftet und auf Wettbewerb ausgerichtet ist. Aber all das war schon "geschrieben" und enthalten in den Bildern und der Sprache der Zeit: Es musste nur "gelesen" werden. Wenn wir auf die etymologischen Wurzeln des Wortes Kompetition achten (vom Lateinischen cum petere: cum = mit, zusammen, petere = zusteuern auf; das Wort bedeutet also zusammen gehen, übereinstimmen, sich treffen, zusammen Fragen stellen), müssen wir uns eingestehen, dass das Konzept des Wettbewerbs, der in Europa sehr stark gefördert wurde, im Gegensatz zur Begünstigung der Kooperation im Erlangen von Verständnis und individueller Fähigkeit zum Zwecke der Verbesserung der Lebensqualität, des Teilens von Gewinnen und des kulturellen Wachstums, eher die Angriffslust, die Notwendigkeit des Erfolgs, der Verwirklichung und des Besitzes bevorteilt hat. Schlussendlich hat sich der Umgang mit der Gegensätzlichkeit, die der Wettbewerb aufzeigt, zugespitzt mit einer Verschärfung der Dynamik zur Erlangung der Vormachtstellung.
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorders with a complex genetic architecture. They are characterized by impaired social communication, stereotyped behaviors and restricted interests and are frequently associated with comorbidities such as intellectual disability, epilepsy and severe sleep disorders. Hyperserotonemia and low melatonin levels are among the most replicated endophenotypes reported in ASD, but their genetic causes remain largely unknown. Based on the biochemical profile of 717 individuals including 213 children with ASD, 128 unaffected siblings and 376 parents and other relatives, we estimated the heritability of whole-blood serotonin, platelet N-acetylserotonin (NAS) and plasma melatonin levels, as well as the two enzymes arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) and acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase (ASMT) activities measured in platelets. Overall, heritability was higher for NAS (0.72 ± 0.091) and ASMT (0.59 ± 0.097) compared with serotonin (0.31 ± 0.078), AANAT (0.34 ± 0.077) and melatonin (0.22 ± 0.071). Bivariate analyses showed high phenotypic and genetic correlations between traits of the second step of the metabolic pathway (NAS, ASMT and melatonin) indicating the contribution of shared genetic factors. A better knowledge of the heritability of the melatonin synthesis variability constitutes an important step to identify the factors that perturb this pathway in individuals with ASD.
Background: Cancer research is critically dependent on a continuous recruitment of junior research staff that devotes its academic life not only to clinical duties but also to basic and translational research. The present study aims to elucidate the success concerning gender equality in cancer research in the last decade (from 2008 to 2016) with lung cancer as the target parameter.
Materials and Methods: On the basis of the Gendermetrics Platform, a total of 19,724 articles related to lung cancer research were analyzed. The key method was the combined analysis of the proportion of female authorships and the female-to-male odds ratio for first, co- and last authorships. The distribution of prestigious authorships was measured by the Prestige Index.
Results: 31.3% of all authorships and 35.2% of the first, 32.2% of the co- and 22.1% of the last authorships were held by women. The corresponding female-to-male odds ratio is 1.22 (CI: 1.18–1.27) for first, 1.19 (CI: 1.16–1.23) for co- and 0.59 (CI: 0.57–0.61) for last authorships. Women are underrepresented at prestigious authorships compared to men (Prestige Index = −0.22). The female underrepresentation accentuates in articles with many authors that attract the highest citation rates.
Conclusions: While the current system promotes early career promotion of women, men still outnumber women in leadership positions. However, this male-female career dichotomy has been narrowed in the last decade and will likely be further reduced in the next decade.
Background: Invasive off- or on-pump cardiac surgery (elective and emergency procedures, excluding transplants are routinely performed to treat complications of ischaemic heart disease. Randomised controlled trials (RCT) evaluate the effectiveness of treatments in the setting of cardiac surgery. However, the impact of RCTs is weakened by heterogeneity in outcome measuring and reporting, which hinders comparison across trials. Core outcome sets (COS, a set of outcomes that should be measured and reported, as a minimum, in clinical trials for a specific clinical field) help reduce this problem. In light of the above, we developed a COS for cardiac surgery effectiveness trials.
Methods: Potential core outcomes were identified a priori by analysing data on 371 RCTs of 58,253 patients. We reached consensus on core outcomes in an international three-round eDelphi exercise. Outcomes for which at least 60% of the participants chose the response option "no" and less than 20% chose the response option "yes" were excluded.
Results: Eighty-six participants from 23 different countries involving adult cardiac patients, cardiac surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nursing staff and researchers contributed to this eDelphi. The panel reached consensus on four core outcomes: 1) Measure of mortality, 2) Measure of quality of life, 3) Measure of hospitalisation and 4) Measure of cerebrovascular complication to be included in adult cardiac surgery trials.
Conclusion: This study used robust research methodology to develop a minimum core outcome set for clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of treatments in the setting of cardiac surgery. As a next step, appropriate outcome measurement instruments have to be selected.

Central European temperate forests are – with the exception of floodplain forests – relatively little invaded by alien plants. However, despite substantial recent progress, there is still a lack of using vege-tation plot data for analyzing spatio-temporal patterns of alien tree species invasions.
We calculated relevé-based metrics of tree species’ ecological preferences using 19,413 phytosociological forest relevés of the Austrian vegetation database. We focused on the five most widely distributed alien trees, i.e. two archaeophytes (Castanea sativa, Juglans regia) and three neophytes (Acer negundo, Ailanthus altissima, Robinia pseudoacacia). For each of these species we analyzed the mean cover in the tree layer and the occurrence in the herb and shrub layers in relevés colonized by adult trees as a measure for persistence. Further, we evaluated the intergenerational ecological plasticity (= the ability of young trees to grow under different site conditions than adults) for the tree species, and the mean relevé indicator values for light, nutrients, moisture and hemeroby. We then compared these alien and native tree species metrics.
We found that A. altissima and R. pseudoacacia build up high mean cover values in invaded forests, but this was not the case for the other alien trees. Thus, both species strongly affected forest communities of invaded sites. Similarly, the two species were common in the lower vegetation layers indicating recruitment under the canopy of adult conspecifics; this was facilitated by their ability to produce root suckers. Highest values of inter-generational ecological plasticity occurred in native pioneer trees and species of softwood floodplain forests, while alien trees had moderately high (A. negundo, A. altissima, J. regia) to low values (C. sativa, R. pseudoacacia). With the exception of C. sativa, all alien species showed high mean Ellenberg indicator values for light and nutrients, and were more common in sites with high hemeroby and high mean Ellenberg indicator values for temperature. Distinct from the ecological preferences of alien trees, and thus rarely invaded, were montane beech forests, coniferous mountain forests and forests at extremely dry sites, as well as swamp and bog forests dominated by willows and ash.
We conclude that relevé-based metrics of the behavior of alien tree species allow new insights into the spatio-temporal dynamics of invasion of woody species in forests. Future work should expand this approach, e.g., by considering the role of life history traits and actual site conditions.
In diesem Beitrag geht es zunächst um den aktuellen Stand der Forschung über das Verhältnis von Sprache und Emotionen mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Untersuchungen zum Deutschen und Tschechischen. Anschließend werden einige Teilaspekte des Themas behandelt: die Unterscheidung zwischen emotionsausdrückender und emotionsbezeichnender Lexik, die Rolle der bildlichen Sprache sowie das Verhältnis vom Sprachübergreifenden und Einzelsprachlichen bei der Verbalisierung von Emotionen. Abschließend wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche Konsequenzen die im Rahmen eines Projektes ermittelten Gemeinsamkeiten, Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede bei der Versprachlichung von Emotionen im Deutschen und Tschechischen für die Behandlung emotionsrelevanter Lexik im DaF-Unterricht bei tschechischen Muttersprachlern haben können.
Solenogastres (Aplacophora) is a small clade of marine, shell-less worm-molluscs with close to 300 valid species. Their distribution ranges across all oceans, and whereas the vast majority of species has been collected and described from the continental shelf and slope, only few species are known from depths below 4,000 m. Following traditional taxonomy, identification of specimens to species level is complex and time-consuming and requires detailed investigations of morphology and anatomy—often resulting in the exclusion of the clade in biodiversity or biogeographic studies. During the KuramBio expedition (Kuril-Kamchatka Biodiversity Studies) to the abyssal plain of the Northwest Pacific and the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench, 33 solenogaster specimens were sampled from 4,830 m to 5,397 m. Within this study we present an efficient workflow to address solenogaster diversity, even when confronted with a high degree of singletons and minute body sizes, hampering the use of single individuals for multiple morphological and molecular approaches. We combine analyses of external characters and scleritome with molecular barcoding based on a self-designed solenogaster specific set of mitochondrial primers. Overall we were able to delineate at least 19 solenogaster lineages and identify 15 species to family level and beyond. Based on our approach we identified three key lineages from the two regionally most species-rich families (Acanthomeniidae and Pruvotinidae) for deeper taxonomic investigations and describe the novel abyssal species Amboherpia abyssokurilensis sp. nov. (Cavibelonia, Acanthomeniidae) using microanatomical 3D-reconstructions. Our study more than doubles the previous records of solenogaster species from the Northwest Pacific and its marginal seas. Almost all lineages are reported for the first time from the region of the (Northwest) Pacific, vastly expanding distribution ranges of the respective clades. Moreover it doubles the number of Solenogastres collected from abyssal depths on a global scale and underlines the lack of exploratory α-diversity work in the abyssal zone for reliable species estimates in marine biodiversity.
Stroke patients with proximal occlusions of the main stems of cerebral arteries are no optimal candidates for i. v. thrombolysis. For many years interventional stroke treatment could not be established as alternative. This changed with the introduction of stent retrievers and flexible large lumen aspiration catheters. Randomized trials now proved a significant benefit from intervention for a wide spectrum of severely compromised stroke patients in time windows of up to 8 hrs. However, the randomized trials leave open questions concerning proper patient selection. The benefit for patients with larger infarcts with an ASPECTS between 3 and 5 or patients in time windows above 8 hrs is still uncertain. Especially for critical candidates imaging for reliable detection of the ischemic core and surrounding salvageable brain tissue plays an important role. Technically equivalence between new aspiration techniques as alternative to the use of stent-retrievers is not finally proven. Recanalization of tandem occlusions with the necessity of acute stenting demands better materials for plaque coverage and thrombus withhold. Management of cases with occlusions due to intracranial atherosclerosis is also debatable. The positive trial results provide especially new challenges to establish countrywide neurointerventional services. Even in developed countries recruitment and training of interventional radiologists as well as priority transportation of stroke patients is challenging to organize.

Zieht man ein Fazit aus den verschiedenen Aspekten der Disziplinen Fremdsprachenerwerb, Musikerziehung und Interkulturelle Erziehung, führt dies zu interdisziplinären Überlegungen darüber, inwieweit sich eine Kooperation miteinander für jeden der Bereiche als sinnvoll erweist bzw. erweisen kann. Musik und Sprache haben sehr viel gemeinsam - beide sind nach einem Regelsystem konstruiert d.h. Wörter und Klänge werden zu größeren funktionellen Einheiten wie Sätzen und Phrasen zusammengefügt. Diese Regelsysteme bestimmen jeweils auch die Beziehungen ihrer einzelnen Teile zum Ganzen und bestimmte Abhängigkeiten der sprachlichen und musikalischen Elemente voneinander. Sie werden vom Menschen durch unbewusste Lernprozesse erworben. Der Beitrag stellt die Ergebnisse einer Studie dar, die an der Pädagogischen Fakultät Hradec Králové durchgeführt wurde und die sich dem Thema Musik im Fremdsprachenunterricht widmet. Es wurden ausgewählte Deutschlehrwerke analysiert und anschließend eine Umfrage unter Fremdsprachenlehrern durchgeführt. Musik im Fremdsprachenunterricht (FSU) zu verwenden, hat ein großes Potenzial. Deshalb sollte sie ein fester Bestandteil in jeder Phase des Fremdsprachenerwerbens sein.
From reparations for slavery to international racial justice: a critical republican perspective

This paper focuses on demands for reparations for colonial slavery and their public reception in France. It argues that this bottom-up, context-sensitive approach to theorising reparations enables us to formulate a critical republican theory of international racial justice. It contrasts the critical republican perspective on reparations with a nation-state centred approach in which reparations activists are accused of threatening the French republic’s sense of homogeneity and unity, thus undermining the national narrative on the French identity. It also rejects the liberal egalitarian perspective, which itself rejects reparations in favour of focusing on present disadvantages. In so doing, this paper illustrates how the notion of non-domination offers a superior way of conceptualising global racial injustices compared to more traditional distributive outlooks.
Photodynamic treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma cells with low curcumin concentrations

Objective: Curcumin is known for its anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumorigenic qualities at concentrations ranging from 3.7µg/ml to 55µg/ml. Therefore it is pre-destined for tumour therapy. Due to high oral doses that have to be administered and the low bioavailability of curcumin new therapy concepts have to be developed. One of these therapy concepts is the combination of low curcumin concentrations and UVA or visible light. Aim of our study was to investigate the influence of this treatment regime on oral squamous cell carcinoma cells.
Materials and Methods: A human oral squamous cell carcinoma cell line (HN) was pre-incubated with low curcumin concentrations (0.01µg/ml to 1µg/ml). Thereafter cell cultures were either left un-irradiated or were irradiated either with 1J/cm2 UVA or for 5min with visible light. Quantitative analysis of proliferation, membrane integrity, oxidative potential and DNA fragmentation were done.
Results: It could be shown that low curcumin concentrations neither influenced proliferation, nor cell morphology, nor cell integrity nor apoptosis. When combining these curcumin concentrations with UVA or visible light irradiation cell proliferation as well as development of reactive oxygen species was reduced whereas DNA fragmentation was increased. Concentration as well as light entity specific effects could be observed.
Conclusions: The present findings substantiate the potential of the combination of low curcumin concentrations and light as a new therapeutic concept to increase the efficacy of curcumin in the treatment of cancer of the oral mucosa.

To assess the scope of infection control measures for multidrug-resistant bacteria in high-risk settings, a survey among university hospitals was conducted. Fourteen professionals from 8 sites participated. Reported policies varied largely with respect to the types of wards conducting screening, sample types used for screening and implementation of contact precautions. This variability among sites highlights the need for an evidence-based consensus of current infection control policies.
Humans have an extremely long history of transporting and introducing mammal species outside their native geographic ranges. The characteristics of the species introduced (taxonomy, life-history, ecology, environment) can all influence which traits are available (and selected) for establishment, and subsequent invasive spread. Understanding the non-randomness in species introductions is therefore key to understanding invasions by alien species. Here, we test for selectivity in the identities and traits of mammal species introduced worldwide. We compiled and analysed a comprehensive database of introduced mammal species, including information on a broad range of life history, ecological, distributional and environmental variables that we predicted to differ between introduced and non-introduced mammal species. Certain mammal taxa are much more likely to have been introduced than expected, such as Artiodactyls in the families Bovidae and Cervidae. Rodents and bats were much less likely to have been introduced than expected. Introduced mammal species have significantly larger body masses, longer lifespans and larger litter sizes than a random sample of all mammal species. They also have much larger native geographic ranges than expected, originate from significantly further north, from cooler areas, and from areas with higher human population densities, than mammal species with no recorded introductions. The traits and distributions of species help determine which have been introduced, and reflect how the evolutionary history of mammals has resulted in certain species with certain traits being located in the way of human histories of movement and demands for goods and services. The large amount of unexplained variation is likely to relate to the intrinsically stochastic nature of this human-driven process.
Background: Isolated transient vertigo can be the only symptom of posterior circulation ischemia. Thus, it is important to differentiate isolated vertigo of a cerebrovascular origin from that of more benign origins, as patients with cerebral ischemia have a much higher risk for future stroke than do those with "peripheral" vertigo. The current study aims to identify risk factors for cerebrovascular origin of isolated transient vertigo, and for future cerebrovascular events.
Methods: From the files of 339 outpatients with isolated transient vertigo we extracted history, clinical and technical findings, diagnosis, and follow-up information on subsequent stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Risk factors were analyzed using multivariate regression models (logistic or Cox) and reconfirmed in univariate analyses.
Results: On first presentation, 48 (14.2%) patients received the diagnosis "probable or definite cerebrovascular vertigo". During follow-up, 41 patients suffered stroke or TIA (event rate 7.9 per 100 person years, 95% confidence interval (CI) 5.5–10.4), 26 in the posterior circulation (event rate 4.8 per 100 person years, 95% CI 3.0–6.7). The diagnosis was not associated with follow-up cerebrovascular events. In multivariate models testing multiple potential determinants, only the presentation mode was consistently associated with the diagnosis and stroke risk: patients who presented because of vertigo (rather than reporting vertigo when they presented for other reasons) had a significantly higher risk for future stroke or TIA (p = 0.028, event rate 13.4 vs. 5.4 per 100 person years) and for future posterior circulation stroke or TIA (p = 0.044, event rate 7.8 vs. 3.5 per 100 person years).
Conclusions: We here report for the first time follow-up stroke rates in patients with transient isolated vertigo. In such patients, the identification of those with cerebrovascular origin remains difficult, and presentation mode was found to be the only consistent risk factor. Confirmation in an independent prospective sample is needed.

THIS ARTICLE TESTS EMPIRICALLY WHETHER THE CURRENT LAISSEZ-FAIRE REGULATION OF PRICE ADVERTISING CLAIMS ON THE MOST POPULAR REWARD-BASED CROWDFUNDING PLATFORM, KICKSTARTER, IS SUFFICIENT TO PROTECT CONSUMERS.
The purpose of the data presented in this article is to use it in ex post estimations of interest rate decisions by the European Central Bank (ECB), as it is done by Bletzinger and Wieland (2017) [1]. The data is of quarterly frequency from 1999 Q1 until 2013 Q2 and consists of the ECB's policy rate, inflation rate, real output growth and potential output growth in the euro area. To account for forward-looking decision making in the interest rate rule, the data consists of expectations about future inflation and output dynamics. While potential output is constructed based on data from the European Commission's annual macro-economic database, inflation and real output growth are taken from two different sources both provided by the ECB: the Survey of Professional Forecasters and projections made by ECB staff. Careful attention was given to the publication date of the collected data to ensure a real-time dataset only consisting of information which was available to the decision makers at the time of the decision.
We study a random matrix model for QCD at finite density via complex Langevin dynamics. This model has a phase transition to a phase with nonzero baryon density. We study the convergence of the algorithm as a function of the quark mass and the chemical potential and focus on two main observables: the baryon density and the chiral condensate. For simulations close to the chiral limit, the algorithm has wrong convergence properties when the quark mass is in the spectral domain of the Dirac operator. A possible solution of this problem is discussed.
Themen wie Antisemitismus, Exil, Flucht oder Vertreibung wurden in der deutschsprachigen und vor allem in der österreichischen Kinder- und Jugendliteratur nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg relativ spät und nur sehr zögerlich aufgegriffen. Das hängt sehr stark mit dem damaligen politischen Klima zusammen. Die meisten ÖsterreicherInnen fühlten sich als erste Opfer von Hitlers Annexionspolitik, die jüngste Vergangenheit wurde weder in der Öffentlichkeit, in der Literatur, noch in Schulen thematisiert, sondern meist verschwiegen und verdrängt. Vor allem der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur wurde die Aufgabe zugesprochen, eine heile Welt zu schaffen – vorrangig für jene Kinder, die den Krieg selbst miterlebt hatten. Dabei richtete sich der Fokus auf jene, die während der NS-Zeit in Österreich verblieben waren und nicht auf jene, die selbst von Anfeindungen aller Art betroffen waren. AutorInnen, die aus eigener Erfahrung berichten hätten können, waren noch nicht in ihre ursprüngliche Heimat zurückgekehrt bzw. wurden auch nicht eingeladen, wieder zurückzukommen. In diesem Klima gab es kaum einen Markt für Kinderund Jugendbücher, die von einer Realität berichteten, die damals und auch lange nach Kriegsende kaum jemand hören wollte. Ein Beispiel dafür ist Mira Lobes Insu-pu. Die Insel der verlorenen Kinder. Das Buch war bereits im Exil verfasst worden und erschien zunächst 1948 in Tel Aviv. In der ursprünglichen Form weist es direkte Verbindungen zu Vertreibung und Exil auf, die in den deutschen Versionen ab 1951 verschwinden. In der Originalversion ist zu lesen, dass eine Kindergruppe aus einem bombengefährdeten Gebiet per Schiff evakuiert wird. In den späteren Ausgaben fehlt dieser Bezug zur Realität. Die Kinder geraten zufällig auf eine Insel, wo sie aus eigener Kraft einen Kinderstaat aufbauen und das eigene Überleben sichern. Der historische Bezug wurde damit gelöscht und mit ihm auch die Chance, sich in der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur kritisch mit der eigenen Vergangenheit zu befassen. Österreichischen AutorInnen wie Alex Wedding, Fred Wander oder der aus politischen Gründen ins Exil gegangenen Hermynia Zur Mühlen, die 1945 in ihrem Buch Little Allies Flüchtlingskinder aus 14 Nationen einander ihre Märchen erzählen lässt, wurden eher in der DDR als in ihrem Heimatland Österreich eine Stimme gegeben. ...
The pointed commentary published on Verfassungsblog over the last week—coming from different perspectives and informed from different experiences—shows the potential of such debates. In the case of Greece, they are an important addition to a discourse focusing too much on austerity or debt sustainability.

Der Schweizer Journalist, Essayist und Literaturkritiker Eduard Korrodi, geboren am 20. November 1885 in Zürich, ist heute, mehr als 60 Jahre nach seinem Tod am 4. September 1955, selbst in Literaten- oder Germanistenkreisen nahezu unbekannt. Seinen Zeitgenossen hingegen galt er als wegweisender Mentor und Anreger, als "schweizerischer Geisteswärter", als "das literarische Bundesgericht" der Schweiz und allmächtiger "Literaturpapst". Diese einzigartige Position eines "Entdeckers" und "Erweckers", "Richters" und "Vernichters" hat er in der Feuilletonredaktion der "Neuen Zürcher Zeitung" zwischen 1915 und 1950 über 35 Jahre hin behauptet - "geliebt, geehrt" und "angegriffen", immer aber "ernst genommen", so dass kaum ein Schweizer Schriftsteller der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts ihn nicht in Tagebüchern oder Memoiren "erwähnt" oder "in gereizter Weise 'behandelt'".
Als jüngster Sohn des angesehenen Lehrers, Schulbuchautors und Lyrikers "für den Hausgebrauch" Johann Heinrich Korrodi (1834-1910) und der Marie Zurgilgen (1852-1950), die der Vater 1882 in dritter Ehe geheiratet hatte, besucht Korrodi die Schule in Zürich und ab Oktober 1898 das Kollegium "Maria Hilf" in Schwyz. Ab dem Wintersemester 1905/06 studiert er deutsche Philologie, Alt-Isländisch und Kunstgeschichte in seiner Heimatstadt und wird hier, nach einem Berliner Auslandssemester im Winter 1907/08 bei Erich Schmidt und Richard Moritz Meyer,10 im Januar 1910 mit der von Adolf Frey (1855-1920) betreuten Dissertation "Stilstudien zu C.F. Meyers Novellen" zum Dr. phil. promoviert.
Das Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, die Notwendigkeit der Aussprachevermittlung in der Deutschlehrerausbildung an brasilianischen Hochschulen zu unterstreichen. Der Beitrag präsentiert zuerst eine Diskussion über die Rolle der Aussprachvermittlung im Fremdsprachunterricht in den Zeiten nach dem Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmen. Darüber hinaus wird der Begriff Akzent sowie dessen Einfluss bzw. Relevanz beim Erlernen einer Fremdsprache thematisiert. Anschließend werden einige Herangehensweisen vorgeschlagen, um die Phonetikarbeit an brasilianischen Hochschulen konsequent durchzuführen.
Über das Vorkommen stabilisierter Zwischenformen zwischen Geranium purpureum und G. robertianum in Aachen wird berichtet. Sie entsprechen im Habitus, in der Pollengröße sowie in der Farbe der Staubbeutel G. purpureum, unterscheiden sich aber in Kronblattfarbe und -maßen, Kelchfarbe und -behaarung sowie der Fruchtoberfläche. Es handelt sich offenbar um durch introgressive Hybridisation von G. robertianum in G. purpureum entstandene Sippen, die als G. urbanum und G. alboroseum neu beschrieben werden. Aufgrund der Pollengröße ist eine (annähernd) diploide Chromosomenzahl zu erwarten. Selten konnten intermediäre Hybriden G. purpureum × G. robertianum und G. urbanum × G. robertianum beobachtet werden, die heterogen große Pollenkörner ausbilden, keine reifen Früchte bilden und vermutlich triploid sind.
Persicaria x condensata, die Hybride zwischen P. maculosa und P. mitis, konnte an einigen Stellen im Stadtgebiet von Aachen sowie in angrenzenden Gebieten der Städteregion Aachen, Belgien und den Niederlanden an gemeinsamen Wuchsorten der Eltern beobachtet werden, insgesamt in etwa vierhundert Pflanzen. Fast alle sind nahezu steril, morphologisch einheitlich und dürften Primärhybriden sein. Sie vermitteln habituell und in den Merk-malen zwischen den Eltern. Auffallend sind neben der weitgehenden Sterilität die weißen bis hell rosa gefärbten Blütenstände. An einem Fundort in Deutschland konnten deutlich stärker fertile Rückkreuzungen von P. x condensata mit P. maculosa nachgewiesen werden. Sie ähneln P. maculosa. Die Entstehung mehrerer abweichender, recht einheitlicher, wenig fertiler Pflanzen von P. x condensata, die P. mitis stärker ähneln, ist ungeklärt. Sie wuchsen an zwei Stellen in den Niederlanden. An zwei Wuchsorten in Belgien und den Niederlanden konnten sechs Pflanzen von Persicaria x subglandulosa, der Hybride zwischen P. hydropiper und P. minor, und 13 Pflanzen von P. x wilmsii, der Hybride zwischen P. minor und P. mitis, beobachtet werden. P. x subglandulosa bildete keine reifen Früchte und zeigte ebenfalls weißliche Blütenstände. Die Pflanzen vermitteln zwischen den Eltern, ähneln insgesamt eher P. minor, vergrünen im Blütenbereich stärker und sind hier deutlich drüsig. P. x wilmsii ist partiell steril, bildet aber mehr gut ausgebildete Früchte als die anderen Hybriden (außer Rückkreuzungen) aus. Auch bei dieser Hybride sind die Blütenstände weißlich. Sie bildet zwischen den Eltern ansonsten vermittelnde Merkmale aus. Dies betrifft den Habitus sowie die Blüten, Früchte und Blätter. Andere Hybriden zwischen Persicaria hydropiper, P. maculosa, P. minor und P. mitis konnten nicht nachgewiesen werden. Das herausragende Merkmal der beobachteten Hybriden, das auch auf weitere fast sterile Persicaria-Hybriden zutreffen dürfte, sind auffallend helle Blütenstände, die eine einfache Identifizierung von Hybridpflanzen innerhalb von Persicaria-Populationen erlauben.
Der erste Teil einer Darstellung der Gattung Echinochloa im Stadtgebiet Aachen und nahe gelegenen Gebieten von Belgien, den Niederlanden und der Städteregion Aachen beschäftigt sich mit der E. muricata-Gruppe. In dieser Gruppe wird neben E. muricata s. str. eine weitere Art, E. wiegandii, unterschieden. Sie vermittelt vom Aussehen der Rispen und Ährchen zu E. crus-galli s. l., gehört aber aufgrund charakteristischer Merkmale der fertilen Deck- und Vorspelzen in die E. muricata-Gruppe. Diagnostische Merkmale von E. wiegandii gegenüber E. muricata s. str. sind ein früherer Blühbeginn, schlankere, schwächer bestachelte, dunkler gefärbte Ährchen sowie eine tendenziell längere Begrannung der Ährchen.
Aktuelle Entwicklungen der Verbreitung und Häufigkeit epiphytischer Moose und Flechten im Stadtgebiet Aachen und in angrenzenden Regionen werden vorgestellt. Speziell besprochen werden die folgenden Arten: Lebermoose: Cololejeunea minutissima, Lejeunea ulicina (= Microlejeunea u.), Metzgeria consanguinea (= M. temperata), M. violacea (= M. fruticulosa); Flechten: Diploicia canescens, Normandina pulchella, Melanohalea exasperata (= Melanelia e.), M. laciniatula (= Melanelia l.), Parmotrema pseudoreticulatum (= Rimelia olivaria), P. reticulatum (= Rimelia r.), Physcia clementei.
Many theories of global distributive justice are based on the assumption that all humans hold common ownership of the earth. As the earth is finite and our actions interconnect, we need a system of justice that regulates the potential appropriation of the common earth to ensure fairness. According to these theories, imposing limits and distributive obligations on private and public property arrangements may be the best mechanism for governing common ownership. We present a critique of the assumption that this issue can be solved within the private–public property regime, arguing that the boundaries of this regime should not be taken for granted and that the growing literature on the democratic commons movement suggests how this can be accomplished. We consider that, if the earth is defined as a common, the private– public property paradigm must be open to questioning, and democratic commoners’ activities should be considered.

Sexual dysfunctions, clinical as well as subclinical, and other sexual complaints that accompany aversive emotions, cognitions, and sexual risk behavior are very common among women after experiences of sexual violence and are underestimated as a problem. Anyway, among victims of other kinds of traumatic experiences, a high prevalence of sexual distress is found as well. Explanatory approaches concentrate on learning theory as well as the phenomenology of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) itself. Sexuality is an important source of vitality, and the maintenance of sexual dysfunctions can be accompanied by a risk of impairments in quality of life and self-esteem as well as relationship problems. Aside clinical practice, there is also a lack of knowledge in clinical science regarding the association between sexual dysfunctions and traumatic experiences, especially sexual ones. In this article, the phenomenology and diagnostic instruments of female sexual dysfunctions are presented, and consequences of sexual violence on sexuality, also in the context of PTSD, are further explained. Suggestions are being made on how to include suitable interventions into therapy.
SR proteins function in nuclear pre-mRNA processing, mRNA export, and translation. To investigate their cellular dynamics, we developed a quantitative assay, which detects differences in nucleocytoplasmic shuttling among seven canonical SR protein family members. As expected, SRSF2 and SRSF5 shuttle poorly in HeLa cells but surprisingly display considerable shuttling in pluripotent murine P19 cells. Combining individual-resolution cross-linking and immunoprecipitation (iCLIP) and mass spectrometry, we show that elevated arginine methylation of SRSF5 and lower phosphorylation levels of cobound SRSF2 enhance shuttling of SRSF5 in P19 cells by modulating protein-protein and protein-RNA interactions. Moreover, SRSF5 is bound to pluripotency-specific transcripts such as Lin28a and Pou5f1/Oct4 in the cytoplasm. SRSF5 depletion reduces and overexpression increases their cytoplasmic mRNA levels, suggesting that enhanced mRNA export by SRSF5 is required for the expression of pluripotency factors. Remarkably, neural differentiation of P19 cells leads to dramatically reduced SRSF5 shuttling. Our findings indicate that posttranslational modification of SR proteins underlies the regulation of their mRNA export activities and distinguishes pluripotent from differentiated cells.
The histopathological and molecular heterogeneity of glioblastomas represents a major obstacle for effective therapies. Glioblastomas do not develop autonomously, but evolve in a unique environment that adapts to the growing tumour mass and contributes to the malignancy of these neoplasms. Here, we show that patient-derived glioblastoma xenografts generated in the mouse brain from organotypic spheroids reproducibly give rise to three different histological phenotypes: (i) a highly invasive phenotype with an apparent normal brain vasculature, (ii) a highly angiogenic phenotype displaying microvascular proliferation and necrosis and (iii) an intermediate phenotype combining features of invasion and vessel abnormalities. These phenotypic differences were visible during early phases of tumour development suggesting an early instructive role of tumour cells on the brain parenchyma. Conversely, we found that tumour-instructed stromal cells differentially influenced tumour cell proliferation and migration in vitro, indicating a reciprocal crosstalk between neoplastic and non-neoplastic cells. We did not detect any transdifferentiation of tumour cells into endothelial cells. Cell type-specific transcriptomic analysis of tumour and endothelial cells revealed a strong phenotype-specific molecular conversion between the two cell types, suggesting co-evolution of tumour and endothelial cells. Integrative bioinformatic analysis confirmed the reciprocal crosstalk between tumour and microenvironment and suggested a key role for TGFβ1 and extracellular matrix proteins as major interaction modules that shape glioblastoma progression. These data provide novel insight into tumour-host interactions and identify novel stroma-specific targets that may play a role in combinatorial treatment strategies against glioblastoma.
When binary systems of neutron stars merge, a very small fraction of their rest mass is ejected, either dynamically or secularly. This material is neutron-rich and its nucleosynthesis provides the astrophysical site for the production of heavy elements in the Universe, together with a kilonova signal confirming neutron-star mergers as the origin of short gamma-ray bursts. We perform full general-relativistic simulations of binary neutron-star mergers employing three different nuclear-physics equations of state (EOSs), considering both equal- and unequal-mass configurations, and adopting a leakage scheme to account for neutrino radiative losses. Using a combination of techniques, we carry out an extensive and systematic study of the hydrodynamical, thermodynamical, and geometrical properties of the matter ejected dynamically, employing the WinNet nuclear-reaction network to recover the relative abundances of heavy elements produced by each configurations. Among the results obtained, three are particularly important. First, we find that, within the sample considered here, both the properties of the dynamical ejecta and the nucleosynthesis yields are robust against variations of the EOS and masses. Second, using a conservative but robust criterion for unbound matter, we find that the amount of ejected mass is ≲10−3 M⊙, hence at least one order of magnitude smaller than what normally assumed in modelling kilonova signals. Finally, using a simplified and gray-opacity model we assess the observability of the infrared kilonova emission finding, that for all binaries the luminosity peaks around ∼1=2 day in the H-band, reaching a maximum magnitude of −13, and decreasing rapidly after one day.
Climate change indicators are tools to assess, visualize and communicate the impacts of climate change on species and communities. Indicators that can be applied to different taxa are particularly useful because they allow comparative analysis to identify which kinds of species are being more affected. A general prediction, supported by empirical data, is that the abundance of warm-adapted species should increase over time, relative to the cool-adapted ones within communities, under increasing ambient temperatures. The community temperature index (CTI) is a community weighted mean of species’ temperature preferences and has been used as an indicator to summarize this temporal shift. The CTI has the advantages of being a simple and generalizable indicator; however, a core problem is that temporal trends in the CTI may not only reflect changes in temperature. This is because species’ temperature preferences often covary with other species attributes, and these other attributes may affect species response to other environmental drivers. Here, we propose a novel model-based approach that separates the effects of temperature preference from the effects of other species attributes on species’ abundances and subsequently on the CTI. Using long-term population data of breeding birds in Denmark and demersal marine fish in the southeastern North Sea, we find differences in CTI trends with the original approach and our model-based approach, which may affect interpretation of climate change impacts. We suggest that our method can be used to test the robustness of CTI trends to the possible effects of other drivers of change, apart from climate change.
Many new strategies for the reconstruction of peripheral nerve injuries have been explored for their effectiveness in supporting nerve regeneration. However only a few of these materials were actually clinically evaluated and approved for human use. This open, mono-center, non-randomized clinical study summarizes the 12-month follow-up of patients receiving reconstruction of the sural nerve biopsy defect by the collagen-based nerve guide Neuromaix. Neuromaix was implanted as a micro-structured, two-component scaffold bridging 20–40 mm nerve defects after sural nerve biopsy in twenty patients (eighteen evaluated, two lost in follow-up). Safety of the material was evaluated by clinical examination of wound healing. Performance was assessed by sensory testing of modalities, pain assessment, and palpation for the Hoffmann–Tinel’s sign as well as demarcating the asensitive area at each follow-up visit. Every patient demonstrated uneventful wound healing during the complete 12-month time course of the study. Two patients reported complete return of sensation, whereas eleven out of eighteen patients reported a positive Hoffmann–Tinel’s sign at the lower leg with simultaneous reduction of the asensitive area by 12 months. Our data show that Neuromaix can be implanted safely in humans to bridge sural nerve gaps. No procedure-related, adverse events, or severe adverse events were reported. These first clinical data on Neuromaix provide promising perspectives for the bridging of larger nerve gaps in combined nerves, which should be investigated more through extensive, multi-center clinical trials in the near future.
Megaregional trade negotiations have become the subject of heated debate, above all in the context of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). In this article, I argue that the justice of the global order suffers from its institutional fragmentation into regime complexes. From a republican perspective, which aspires to non-domination as a guiding principles and idea of global justice, regime complexes raise specific and important challenges in that they open the door to specific forms of domination. I thereby challenge a more optimistic outlook in regime complexes, which paints a positive normative picture of regime complexes, arguing that they enable the enhancement of democracy beyond the state and, consequently, have the potential to reduce the democratic deficit in global governance. By drawing attention to how regime complexes reinforce domination-related injustice, this article contributes an original perspective on megaregionals and to exploring the implications of global justice as non-domination.
Ageing is a progressive decline of intrinsic physiological functions. We examined the impact of ageing on the ultrastructure and function of mitochondria in mouse and fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) by electron cryo-tomography and respirometry. We discovered distinct age-related changes in both model organisms. Mitochondrial function and ultrastructure are maintained in mouse heart, whereas subpopulations of mitochondria from mouse liver show age-related changes in membrane morphology. Subpopulations of mitochondria from young and old mouse kidney resemble those described for apoptosis. In aged flies, respiratory activity is compromised and the production of peroxide radicals is increased. In about 50% of mitochondria from old flies, the inner membrane organization breaks down. This establishes a clear link between inner membrane architecture and functional decline. Mitochondria were affected by ageing to very different extents, depending on the organism and possibly on the degree to which tissues within the same organism are protected against mitochondrial damage.

We have developed and characterized the novel PTR3, a proton transfer reaction-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF) using a new gas inlet and an innovative reaction chamber design. The reaction chamber consists of a tripole operated with rf voltages generating an electric field only in the radial direction. An elevated electrical field is necessary to reduce clustering of primary hydronium (H3O+) and product ions with water molecules present in the sample gas. The axial movement of the ions is achieved by the sample gas flow only. Therefore, the new design allows a 30-fold longer reaction time and a 40-fold increase in pressure compared to standard PTR-TOF-MS. First calibration tests show sensitivities of up to 18000 counts per second/parts per billion and volume (cps/ppbv) at a mass resolution of >8000 m/Δm (fwhm). The new inlet using center-sampling through a critical orifice reduces wall losses of low volatility compounds. Therefore, the new PTR3 instrument is sensitive to VOC typically present in the ppbv range as well as to semivolatile organic compounds (SVOC) and even highly oxidized organic molecules (HOMs) present in the parts per quadrillion per volume (ppqv) range in the atmosphere.

Hinzu kommen einige Verwilderungen der auch als Zierpflanze gezogenen P. officinalis s. str. Von beiden Arten werden die aktuellen Nachweisdaten mitgeteilt. Auf die Differenzierung des P. officinalis agg. und die Trennung von weiteren kultivierten Sippen wird eingegangen. Außerdem werden die historischen Aufzeichnungen über Vorkommen von P. angustifolia bei Salzwedel dargestellt. Angaben zur Bedeutung von P. officinalis s. str. in der Volksheilkunde vervollständigen die Ausführungen.
Die Fundortdaten der im Altmarkkreis Salzwedel nachgewiesenen Verwilderungen von Amelanchier alnifolia, A. lamarckii und A. spicata werden mitgeteilt. Angaben zu den Standortverhältnissen, zur Begleitflora und zum Populationsumfang ergänzen die Ausführungen. Außerdem wird auf wesentliche Unterscheidungsmerkmale der drei Arten eingegangen.

Theoretisch-utopische Entwürfe der Frühen Neuzeit und der Aufklärung haben fast automatisch nur männliche Akteure im Blick. Wenn Frauen dennoch auftauchen, dann allenfalls als Gebärerinnen, Haushaltsverantwortliche oder Erzieherinnen. Und auch für 'anarchoide' Entwürfe des 18. Jahrhunderts - gleich ob theoretisch-utopische oder literarische - gilt: Es waren fast ausschließlich solche von Männern für Männer. Diese Sichtverengung änderte sich erst im Verlauf des 19. Jahrhunderts, d.h. mit dem Eintritt von Frauen als Autorinnen in soziale und politische Diskurse. Denn Frauen - unter einer Mehrfachherrschaft: unter dem gleichen sozialen, ökonomischen und politischen Druck wie Männer, aber zusätzlich noch unter dem Druck eben der Männer - hatten ihre Anliegen selbst in die Hand zu nehmen, und sie nahmen sie in die Hand. Und es zeigt sich: Nicht wenige der Emanzipationsdiskurse, die bislang als demokratisch angesehen wurden und werden, waren mitnichten 'nur' demokratisch. Denn sie waren nicht selten anarchistisch oder 'anarchoid'. Das verdeutlichen zum Beispiel auch die Debatten um den Status von 'Ehe'.
Background: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a major challenge in liver transplantation. The mitochondrial pathway plays a pivotal role in hepatic IRI. Levosimendan, a calcium channel sensitizer, was shown to attenuate apoptosis after IRI in animal livers. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of levosimendan on apoptosis in human hepatocytes.
Methods: Primary human hepatocytes were either exposed to hypoxia or cultured under normoxic conditions. After the hypoxic phase, reoxygenation was implemented and cells were treated with different concentrations of levosimendan (10ng/ml, 100ng/ml, 1000ng/ml). The overall metabolic activity of the cells was measured using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were determined in order to quantify hepatic injury. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis was applied to measure necrosis and apoptosis. Finally, Western blotting was performed to analyze apoptotic pathway proteins.
Results: Administration of levosimendan during reperfusion increases the metabolic activity of human hepatocytes and decreases AST levels. Moreover, apoptosis after IRI is reduced in treated vs. untreated hepatocytes, and levosimendan prevents down-regulation of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 as well as up-regulation of the pro-apoptotic protein BAX.
Conclusion: The present study suggests a protective effect of levosimendan on human hepatocytes. Our findings suggest that treatment with levosimendan during reperfusion attenuates apoptosis of human hepatocytes by influencing BAX and Bcl-2 levels.
Background: Imbalances in female career promotion are a key factor of gender disparities at the workplace. They may lead to stress and stress-related diseases including burnout, depression or cardiovascular diseases. Since this problem cannot be generalized and varies between different fields, new approaches are needed to assess and describe the magnitude of the problem in single fields of work.
Methods: To construct a new index, operating figures of female and male medical students were collected for Germany in a period over 15 years and their progression throughout their studies towards specialization and academic chair positions. By the use of different female to male ratios (f:m), we constructed an index that describes the extend by which women can ascent in their academic career by using the field of academic medicine as an example.
Results: A medical student f:m ratio of 1.54 (52,366 female vs. 34,010 male) was found for Germany in 2013. In 1998, this f:m ratio was 0.999. In the same year (2013), the OB/GYN hospital specialists’ f:m ratio was 1.566 (3347 female vs. 2137 male physicians) and 0.577 (516 female vs 894 male physicians) for ENT hospital specialists, respectively. The f:m ratios concerning chairs of OB/GYN and ENT were 0.105 and 0.1, respectively. Then an index was generated that incorporated these operating figures with the student f:m ratio as denominator and the chair f:m ratio as numerator while the hospital specialist f:m ratio served as a corrector in the numerator in order to adjust to the attraction of a given field to female physicians. As a result, the index was 0.044 for OB/GYN and 0.113 for ENT instead of ideally ~1 in a completely gender harmonized situation.
Conclusion: In summary, a new index to describe female career advancement was established for academic medicine. By the use of this index, different academic and medical fields can now be compared to each other and future benchmarks could be proposed. Also, country differences may be examined using the proposed index and the success of specific funding programs.
Objective: About 2% of all pregnancies are complicated by the implantation of the zygote outside the uterine cavity and termed ectopic pregnancy. Whereas a multitude of guidelines exists and related research is constantly growing, no thorough assessment of the global research architecture has been performed yet. Hence, we aim to assess the associated scientific activities in relation to geographical and chronological developments, existing research networks and socioeconomic parameters.
Design: Retrospective, descriptive study.
Setting: On the basis of the NewQIS platform, scientometric methods were combined with novel visualising techniques such as density-equalising mapping to assess the scientific output on ectopic pregnancy. Using the Web of Science, we identified all related entries from 1900 to 2012.
Results: 8040 publications were analysed. The USA and the UK were dominating the field in regard to overall research activity (2612 and 723 publications), overall citation numbers and country-specific H-Indices (US: 80, UK: 42). Comparison to economic power of the most productive countries demonstrated that Israel invested more resources in ectopic pregnancy-related research than other nations (853.41 ectopic pregnancy-specific publications per 1000 billlion US$ gross domestic product (GDP)), followed by the UK (269.97). Relation to the GDP per capita index revealed 49.3 ectopic pregnancy-specific publications per US$1000 GDP per capita for the USA in contrast to 17.31 for the UK. Semiqualitative indices such as country-specific citation rates ranked Switzerland first (24.7 citations per ectopic pregnancy-specific publication), followed by the Scandinavian countries Finland and Sweden. Low-income countries did not exhibit significant research activities.
Conclusions: This is the first in-depth analysis of global ectopic pregnancy research since 1900. It offers unique insights into the global scientific landscape. Besides the USA and the UK, Scandinavian countries and Switzerland can also be regarded as leading nations with regard to their relative socioeconomic input.
Objective: Worldwide, the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) represents the predominant viral agent causing bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children. To conduct research and tackle existing healthcare disparities, RSV-related research activities around the globe need to be described. Hence, we assessed the associated scientific output (represented by research articles) by geographical, chronological and socioeconomic criteria and analysed the authors publishing in the field by gender. Also, the 15 most cited articles and the most prolific journals were identified for RSV research.
Design: Retrospective, descriptive study.
Setting: The NewQIS (New Quality and Quantity Indices in Science) platform was employed to identify RSV-related articles published in the Web of Science until 2013. We performed a numerical analysis of all articles, and examined citation-based aspects (eg, citation rates); results were visualised by density equalising mapping tools.
Results: We identified 4600 RSV-related articles. The USA led the field; US-American authors published 2139 articles (46.5%% of all identified articles), which have been cited 83 000 times. When output was related to socioeconomic benchmarks such as gross domestic product or Research and Development expenditures, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia and Chile were ranked in leading positions. A total of 614 articles on RSV (13.34% of all articles) were attributed to scientific collaborations. These were primarily established between high-income countries. The gender analysis indicated that male scientists dominated in all countries except Brazil.
Conclusions: The majority of RSV-related research articles originated from high-income countries whereas developing nations showed only minimal publication productivity and were barely part of any collaborative networks. Hence, research capacity in these nations should be increased in order to assist in addressing inequities in resource allocation and the clinical burden of RSV in these countries.
BACKGROUND: Despite its impact on female health worldwide, no efforts have been made to depict the global architecture of ovarian cancer research and to understand the trends in the related literature. Hence, it was the objective of this study to assess the global scientific performance chronologically, geographically and in regards to economic benchmarks using bibliometric tools and density equalizing map projections.
METHODS: The NewQIS platform was employed to identify all ovarian cancer related articles published in the Web of Science since 1900. The items were analyzed regarding quantitative aspects (e.g. publication date, country of origin) and parameters describing the recognition of the work by the scientific community (e.g. citation rates).
RESULTS: 23,378 articles on ovarian cancer were analyzed. The USA had the highest activity of ovarian cancer research with a total of n = 9312 ovarian cancer-specific publications, followed by the UK (n = 1900), China (n = 1813), Germany (n = 1717) and Japan (n = 1673). Ovarian cancer-specific country h-index also showed a leading position of the USA with an h-index (HI) of 207, followed by the UK (HI = 122), Canada (HI = 99), Italy (HI = 97), Germany (HI = 84), and Japan (HI = 81). In the socio-economic analysis, the USA were ranked first with an average of 175.6 ovarian cancer-related publications per GDP per capita in 1000 US-$, followed by Italy with an index level of 46.85, the UK with 45.48, and Japan with 43.3. Overall, the USA and Western European nations, China and Japan constituted the scientific power players publishing the majority of highly cited ovarian cancer-related articles and dominated international collaborative efforts. African, Asian and South American countries played almost no visible role in the scientific community.
CONCLUSIONS: The quantity and scientific recognition of publications related to ovarian cancer are continuously increasing. The research endeavors in the field are concentrated in high-income countries with no involvement of lower-resource nations. Hence, worldwide collaborative efforts with the aim to exchange epidemiologic data, resources and knowledge have to be strengthened in the future to successfully alleviate the global burden related to ovarian cancer.

Sie hat in aller Regel einen intrusiven Aspekt und schafft ein spezifisches, vom Tagesanblick deutlich unterschiedenes Erscheinungsbild. Meistens erzeugt sie zum Beispiel Wahrnehmungsbilder, die mit fast allen Formen von gemalten Abbildungen und mit narrativen Darstellungen gemeinsam haben, 'Unbestimmtheitsstellen' zu enthalten. Die Wahrnehmungsgeschichte der künstlich erleuchteten Stadtzentren ist von der Komplexität geprägt, die auch das Verhältnis von Kunstlicht und Raum charakterisiert. Im Verlauf der Epoche, die mit der Aufstellung der ersten Gaslaternen zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts begann und die mit der Einführung der elektrischen Glühbirnen, der Neon-Röhren und schließlich der LED-Dioden ihre Fortsetzung fand, hat das von diesen Lichtern erzeugte Raumerlebnis mehrfach qualitative Veränderungen erfahren. Die folgenden Ausführungen kontrastieren vier historisch aufeinander folgende Typen von Wahrnehmungsbildern der erleuchteten Innenstädte: 1.) Reaktionen aus der 'Pionierzeit' der Straßenbeleuchtung (bis Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts); 2.) Reaktionen aus der Zeit der Einführung der elektrischen Beleuchtung; 3.) die avantgardistische Kunstlichtwahrnehmung der 1920er Jahre; 4.) Wahrnehmungsbilder, wie sie aktuell angewendete Beleuchtungspraktiken nahelegen. Die beobachteten Wandlungen im Erleben der beleuchteten Stadtszenerien werden mit Tendenzen, die für die jeweiligen Stadtgesellschaften typisch sind, in Zusammenhang gebracht.
Phytotoxic dioxolanones from Guignardia bidwellii can be described as potential virulence factors which cause the formation of lesions upon an infection by G. bidwellii. The toxin guignardic acid was found in planta of G. bidwellii-infected Vitis vinifera leaves, whereas no phytotoxic dioxolanones were detected in uninfected leaf material. Secondary metabolism analyses of further phytopathogenic fungi from the genus Guignardia led to the observation that all species investigated can produce the phytotoxins known from G. bidwellii. In addition to these studies, it was demonstrated that phenguignardic acid is biosynthetically derived from two molecules of phenylalanine and that phenylalanine is a key precursor in the biosynthesis of the two other phytotoxins – alaguignardic acid and guignardic acid.
Maintenance therapy after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is conceptually attractive to prevent relapse, but has been hampered by the limited number of suitable anti-leukemic agents. The deacetylase inhibitor (DACi) panobinostat demonstrated moderate anti-leukemic activity in a small subset of patients with advanced AML and high-risk MDS in phase I/II trials.1, 2 It also displays immunomodulatory activity3 that may enhance leukemia-specific cytotoxicity4 and mitigate graft versus host disease (GvHD), but conversely could impair T- and NK cell function.5, 6 We conducted this open-label, multi-center phase I/II trial (NCT01451268) to assess the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of prolonged prophylactic administration of panobinostat after HSCT for AML or MDS. The paper addresses the problem of justifying ethically sound dimensions of poverty or well-being for use in a multidimensional framework. We combine Sen’s capability approach and Rawls’ method of political constructivism and argue that the constitution and its interpretative practice can serve as an ethically suitable informational basis for selecting dimensions, under certain conditions. We illustrate our Constitutional Approach by deriving a set of well-being dimensions from an analysis of the Italian Constitution. We argue that this method is both an improvement on those used in the existing literature from the ethical point of view, and has a strong potential for providing the ethical basis of a conception of well-being for the public affairs of a pluralist society. In the final part, we elaborate on the implications for measuring well-being based on data, by ranking Italian regions in terms of well-being, and pointing out the differences in results produced by different methods.
In patients with glioblastoma, antiangiogenic therapy with bevacizumab (BEV) has been shown to improve progression-free survival (PFS), but not overall survival (OS). Especially in patients with an unusual infiltrative phenotype as seen in multifocal glioblastoma, the use of BEV therapy is still more controversial. Therefore, we prepared a retrospective case series with 16 patients suffering from a multifocal glioblastoma treated with BEV. We compared these patients to a matched control cohort of 16 patients suffering from glioblastoma with a single lesion treated with BEV. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the course of disease differs in glioblastoma patients with a multifocal disease pattern compared to those with a single lesion only. Patients were treated with BEV monotherapy or BEV in combination with irinotecan or lomustine (CCNU). Response rates and PFS were similar in both groups. There was a trend for an unfavorable OS in the patient group with multifocal glioblastoma, which was expected due to the generally worse prognosis of multifocal glioblastoma. We investigated whether BEV therapy affects the invasive growth pattern as measured by the appearance of new lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Under BEV therapy, there was a trend for a lower frequency of new lesions both in multifocal and solitary glioblastoma. Based on these results, BEV therapy at relapse appears to be justified to no lesser extent in multifocal glioblastoma than in solitary glioblastoma.
Bevacizumab for patients with recurrent gliomas presenting with a gliomatosis cerebri growth pattern

Bevacizumab has been shown to improve progression-free survival and neurologic function, but failed to improve overall survival in newly diagnosed glioblastoma and at first recurrence. Nonetheless, bevacizumab is widely used in patients with recurrent glioma. However, its use in patients with gliomas showing a gliomatosis cerebri growth pattern is contentious. Due to the marked diffuse and infiltrative growth with less angiogenic tumor growth, it may appear questionable whether bevacizumab can have a therapeutic effect in those patients. However, the development of nodular, necrotic, and/or contrast-enhancing lesions in patients with a gliomatosis cerebri growth pattern is not uncommon and may indicate focal neo-angiogenesis. Therefore, control of growth of these lesions as well as control of edema and reduction of steroid use may be regarded as rationales for the use of bevacizumab in these patients. In this retrospective patient series, we report on 17 patients with primary brain tumors displaying a gliomatosis cerebri growth pattern (including seven glioblastomas, two anaplastic astrocytomas, one anaplastic oligodendroglioma, and seven diffuse astrocytomas). Patients have been treated with bevacizumab alone or in combination with lomustine or irinotecan. Seventeen matched patients treated with bevacizumab for gliomas with a classical growth pattern served as a control cohort. Response rate, progression-free survival, and overall survival were similar in both groups. Based on these results, anti-angiogenic therapy with bevacizumab should also be considered in patients suffering from gliomas with a mainly infiltrative phenotype.
BRAF V600E mutations occur frequently in malignant melanoma, but are rare in most malignant glioma subtypes. Besides, more benign brain tumors such as ganglioglioma, dysembryoblastic neuroepithelial tumours and supratentorial pilocytic astrocytomas, only pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas (50-78%) and epitheloid glioblastoma (50%) regularly exhibit BRAF mutations. In the present study, we report on three patients with recurrent malignant gliomas harbouring a BRAF V600E mutation. All patients presented with markedly disseminated leptomeningeal disease at recurrence and had progressed after radiotherapy and alkylating chemotherapy. Therefore, estimated life expectancy at recurrence was a few weeks. All three patients received dabrafenib as a single agent and all showed a complete or nearly complete response. Treatment is ongoing and patients are stable for 27 months, 7 months and 3 months, respectively. One patient showed a dramatic radiologic and clinical response after one week of treatment. We were able to generate an ex vivo tumor cell culture from CSF in one patient. Treatment of this cell culture with dabrafenib resulted in reduced cell density and inhibition of ERK phosphorylation in vitro. To date, this is the first series on adult patients with BRAF-mutated malignant glioma and leptomeningeal dissemination treated with dabrafenib monotherapy. All patients showed a dramatic response with one patient showing an ongoing response for more than two years.

Es trägt den Titel 'Die Lesbarkeit der Welt' und es handelt von dem Buch, das alle Bücher der Buchmesse, ja alle vergangenen, gegenwärtigen und zukünftigen Bücher umfasst, es handelt vom Buch der Welt als Metapher "für das Ganze der Erfahrbarkeit". Taubes wird neugierig. Er blättert, liest sich fest, kommt bis Seite 19. Dann: ein Druckfehler. Taubes, dem Blumenberg über Jahre die kalte Schulter gezeigt hat, denkt nach, schmunzelt vielleicht, macht sich Notizen. Zu Hause greift er sich eine Postkarte und schreibt nach Altenberge bei Münster, sein, Blumenbergs, neues Buch sei "[s]pannend wie ein Roman". Er philosophiere historice und critice, dies gegen den Kollegen Henrich in Heidelberg. Und, ach ja, sein Buch enthalte einen Druckfehler, auf Seite 19 steht: "Boch"; die ganze Passage bei Blumenberg lautet: "Die Frage, wie denn in diesem Buch der Natur gelesen werden könne, in welcher Sprache es geschrieben sei und wie man ihre Grammatik herauszufinden hätte, schiebt sich erst über die metaphorische Grundschicht der Bücherkonkurrenz, in der primär Buch neben Boch, sekundär Buch gegen Buch steht."
Scholars are coming to terms with the fact that something is rotten in the new democracies of Central Europe. The corrosion has multiple symptoms: declining trust in democratic institutions, emboldened uncivil society, the rise of oligarchs and populists as political leaders, assaults on an independent judiciary, the colonization of public administration by political proxies, increased political control over media, civic apathy, nationalistic contestation and Russian meddling. These processes signal that the liberal-democratic project in the so-called Visegrad Four (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) has been either stalled, diverted or reversed. This article investigates the “illiberal turn” in the Visegrad Four (V4) countries. It develops an analytical distinction between illiberal “turns” and “swerves”, with the former representing more permanent political changes, and offers evidence that Hungary is the only country in the V4 at the brink of a decisive illiberal turn.
Cognitive flexibility, the ability to flexibly switch between tasks, is a core dimension of executive functions (EFs) allowing to control actions and to adapt flexibly to changing environments. It supports the management of multiple tasks, the development of novel, adaptive behavior and is associated with various life outcomes. Cognitive flexibility develops rapidly in preschool and continuously increases well into adolescence, mirroring the growth of neural networks involving the prefrontal cortex. Over the past decade, there has been increasing interest in interventions designed to improve cognitive flexibility in children in order to support the many developmental outcomes associated with cognitive flexibility. This article provides a brief review of the development and plasticity of cognitive flexibility across early and middle childhood (i.e., from preschool to elementary school age). Focusing on interventions designed to improve cognitive flexibility in typically developing children, we report evidence for significant training and transfer effects while acknowledging that current findings on transfer are heterogeneous. Finally, we introduce metacognitive training as a promising new approach to promote cognitive flexibility and to support transfer of training.
Malignant brain tumors, including gliomas, brain metastases and anaplastic meningiomas, are associated with poor prognosis, and represent an unmet medical need. ASA404 (DMXAA), a vascular disrupting agent, has demonstrated promising results in several preclinical tumor models and early phase clinical trials. However, two phase III trials in non-small cell lung cancer reported insufficient results. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of ASA404 on brain tumors. The effects of ASA404 were evaluated in vitro and in vivo using subcutaneous, and orthotopical models for malignant glioma (U-87, LN-229, U-251, LN-308 and Tu-2449), brain metastasis (HT-29) and malignant meningioma (IOMM-Lee). The acute effects of ASA404 on tumor tissue were analyzed using conventional and immunohistochemical staining techniques [hematoxylin and eosin, MIB-1 antibody/proliferation maker protein Ki-67, cleaved caspase-8, stimulator of interferon genes (STING), ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1]. Furthermore, the sizes of subcutaneous tumors were measured and the symptom-free survival rates of animals with intracranial tumors receiving ASA404 treatment were analyzed. ASA404 demonstrated low toxicity in vitro, but exhibited strong effects on subcutaneous tumors 24 h following a single dose of ASA404 (25 mg/kg). ASA404 induced necrosis, hemorrhages and inhibited the proliferation, and growth of tumors in the subcutaneous glioma models. However, ASA404 failed to demonstrate comparable effects in any of the intracranial tumor models examined and did not result in a prolongation of survival. Expression of STING, the molecular target of ASA404, and infiltration of macrophages, the cells mediating ASA404 activity, did not differ between subcutaneous and intracranial tumors. In conclusion, ASA404 demonstrates clear efficacy in subcutaneous tumor models, but has no relevant activity in orthotopic brain tumor models. The expression of STING and infiltration with macrophages were not determined to be involved in the differential activity observed among tumor models. It is possible that the low penetration of ASA-404 into the brain prevents concentrations sufficient enough reaching the tumor in order to exhibit acute effects in vivo.
Disruption of the blood-air barrier, which is formed by lung microvascular endothelial and alveolar epithelial cells, is a hallmark of acute lung injury. It was shown that alveolar epithelial cells release an unidentified soluble factor that enhances the barrier function of lung microvascular endothelial cells. In this study we reveal that primarily prostaglandin (PG) E2 accounts for this endothelial barrier-promoting activity. Conditioned media from alveolar epithelial cells (primary ATI-like cells) collected from BALB/c mice and A549 cells increased the electrical resistance of pulmonary human microvascular endothelial cells, respectively. This effect was reversed by pretreating alveolar epithelial cells with a cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor or by blockade of EP4 receptors on endothelial cells, and in A549 cells also by blocking the sphingosine-1-phosphate1 receptor. Cyclooxygenase-2 was constitutively expressed in A549 cells and in primary ATI-like cells, and was upregulated by lipopolysaccharide treatment. This was accompanied by enhanced PGE2 secretion into conditioned media. Therefore, we conclude that epithelium-derived PGE2 is a key regulator of endothelial barrier integrity via EP4 receptors under physiologic and inflammatory conditions. Given that pharmacologic treatment options are still unavailable for diseases with compromised air-blood barrier, like acute lung injury, our data thus support the therapeutic potential of selective EP4 receptor agonists.
Despite an increasing demand for Burgundy truffles (Tuber aestivum), gaps remain in our understanding of the fungus’ overall lifecycle and ecology. Here, we compile evidence from three independent surveys in Hungary and Switzerland. First, we measured the weight and maturity of 2,656 T. aestivum fruit bodies from a three-day harvest in August 2014 in a highly productive orchard in Hungary. All specimens ranging between 2 and 755 g were almost evenly distributed through five maturation classes. Then, we measured the weight and maturity of another 4,795 T. aestivum fruit bodies harvested on four occasions between June and October 2015 in the same truffière. Again, different maturation stages occurred at varying fruit body size and during the entire fruiting season. Finally, the predominantly unrelated weight and maturity of 81 T. aestivum fruit bodies from four fruiting seasons between 2010 and 2013 in Switzerland confirmed the Hungarian results. The spatiotemporal coexistence of 7,532 small-ripe and large-unripe T. aestivum, which accumulate to ~182 kg, differs from species-specific associations between the size and ripeness that have been reported for other mushrooms. Although size-independent truffle maturation stages may possibly relate to the perpetual belowground environment, the role of mycelial connectivity, soil property, microclimatology, as well as other abiotic factors and a combination thereof, is still unclear. Despite its massive sample size and proof of concept, this study, together with existing literature, suggests consideration of a wider ecological and biogeographical range, as well as the complex symbiotic fungus-host interaction, to further illuminate the hidden development of belowground truffle fruit bodies.
Psoriasis is a frequent and often severe inflammatory skin disease, characterized by altered epidermal homeostasis. Since we found previously that Akt/mTOR signaling is hyperactivated in psoriatic skin, we aimed at elucidating the role of aberrant mTORC1 signaling in this disease. We found that under healthy conditions mTOR signaling was shut off when keratinocytes switch from proliferation to terminal differentiation. Inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-17A, TNF-α) induced aberrant mTOR activity which led to enhanced proliferation and reduced expression of differentiation markers. Conversely, regular differentiation could be restored if mTORC1 signaling was blocked. In mice, activation of mTOR through the agonist MHY1485 also led to aberrant epidermal organization and involucrin distribution. In summary, these results not only identify mTORC1 as an important signal integrator pivotal for the cells fate to either proliferate or differentiate, but emphasize the role of inflammation-dependent mTOR activation as a psoriatic pathomechanism.
The mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin) inhibitor rapamycin has long been known for its immune suppressive properties, but it has shown limited therapeutic success when given systemically to patients with psoriasis. Recent data have shown that the mTOR pathway is hyperactivated in lesional psoriatic skin, which probably contributes to the disease by interfering with maturation of keratinocytes. This study investigated the effect of topical rapamycin treatment in an imiquimod-induced psoriatic mouse model. The disease was less severe if the mice had received rapamycin treatment. Immunohistological analysis revealed that rapamycin not only prevented the activation of mTOR signalling (P-mTOR and P-S6 levels), but almost normalized the expression of epidermal differentiation markers. In addition, the influx of innate immune cells into the draining lymph nodes was partially reduced by rapamycin treatment. These data emphasize the role of mTOR signalling in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, and support the investigation of topical mTOR inhibition as a novel anti-psoriatic strategy.
Der Artikel stellt aktuelle stilometrische Studien im Delta-Kontext vor. Diskutiert wird, warum die Verwendung des Kosinus-Abstands zu einer Verbesserung der Erfolgsquote führt; durch Experimente zur Vektornormalisierung gelingt es, die Funktionsweise von Delta besser zu verstehen. Anhand von mittelhochdeutschen Texten wird gezeigt, dass auch metrische Eigenschaften zur Autorschaftsattribution eingesetzt werden können. Zudem wird untersucht, inwieweit die mittelalterliche, nicht-normierte Schreibung die Erfolgsquote von Delta beeinflusst. Am Beispiel von arabisch-lateinischen Übersetzungen wird geprüft, inwieweit eine selektive Merkmalseliminierung dazu beitragen kann, das Übersetzersignal vom Genresignal zu isolieren.
Hyponatremia is the most common and by far underestimated electrolyte disorder in clinical practice. Especially in elderly patients, treatment of symptomatic hyponatremia is challenging. Herein we describe the case of an octogenarian with recurrent symptomatic hyponatremia due to idiopathic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone release (SIADH). Fluid restriction was insufficient to prevent repeated episodes of hyponatremia complicated by falls and coma. After introduction of a low-dose therapy with tolvaptan, serum sodium levels as well as the clinical condition were stable under vaptan therapy, without any relapse for more than six years now. This case demonstrates that long-term tolvaptan treatment for hyponatremia caused by SIADH is safe and well tolerated, even in the elderly.
The family Gymnophthalmidae contains nearly 235 species with a distribution range from southern Mexico to central Argentina as well as in the Antilles. Among gymnophthalmids, the genus Colobosaura is a member of the tribe Iphisini, and currently is considered monotypic (C. modesta). The diversity of the tribe was studied recently, with the erection of several new genera. In this work genetic and morphological data of specimens of Colobosaura recently collected in Paraguay were analyzed. Genetic (16S barcode) data indicate that these samples are not conspecific with C. modesta and they are allocated to the nominal species C. kraepelini. Because the original primary type of the latter taxon is considered to be lost, a neotype (SMF 101370) is designated for this species and a redescription provided based on our material. Colobosaura kraepelini is distributed in the Humid Chaco, being the only member of the whole tribe in this ecoregion.
Genetic data in studies of systematics of Amazonian amphibians frequently reveal that purportedly widespread single species in reality comprise species complexes. This means that real species richness may be significantly higher than current estimates. Here we combine genetic, morphological, and bioacoustic data to assess the phylogenetic relationships and species boundaries of two Amazonian species of the Dendropsophus leucophyllatus species group: D. leucophyllatus and D. triangulum. Our results uncovered the existence of five confirmed and four unconfirmed candidate species. Among the confirmed candidate species, three have available names: Dendropsophus leucophyllatus, Dendropsophus triangulum, and Dendropsophus reticulatus, this last being removed from the synonymy of D. triangulum. A neotype of D. leucophyllatus is designated. We describe the remaining two confirmed candidate species, one from Bolivia and another from Peru. All confirmed candidate species are morphologically distinct and have much smaller geographic ranges than those previously reported for D. leucophyllatus and D. triangulum sensu lato. Dendropsophus leucophyllatus sensu stricto occurs in the Guianan region. Dendropsophus reticulatus comb. nov. corresponds to populations in the Amazon basin of Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru previously referred to as D. triangulum. Dendropsophus triangulum sensu stricto is the most widely distributed species; it occurs in Amazonian Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, reaching the state of Pará. We provide accounts for all described species including an assessment of their conservation status.
Recent studies have suggested increased plasticity of differentiated cells within the intestine to act both as intestinal stem cells (ISCs) and tumour-initiating cells. However, little is known of the processes that regulate this plasticity. Our previous work has shown that activating mutations of Kras or the NF-κB pathway can drive dedifferentiation of intestinal cells lacking Apc. To investigate this process further, we profiled both cells undergoing dedifferentiation in vitro and tumours generated from these cells in vivo by gene expression analysis. Remarkably, no clear differences were observed in the tumours; however, during dedifferentiation in vitro we found a marked upregulation of TGFβ signalling, a pathway commonly mutated in colorectal cancer (CRC). Genetic inactivation of TGFβ type 1 receptor (Tgfbr1/Alk5) enhanced the ability of KrasG12D/+ mutation to drive dedifferentiation and markedly accelerated tumourigenesis. Mechanistically this is associated with a marked activation of MAPK signalling. Tumourigenesis from differentiated compartments is potently inhibited by MEK inhibition. Taken together, we show that tumours arising in differentiated compartments will be exposed to different suppressive signals, for example, TGFβ and blockade of these makes tumourigenesis more efficient from this compartment.
A motivação do aluno é apontada como central para que o processo de aprendizagem ocorra de forma satisfatória e, por essa razão, muitos professores buscam constantemente o aprimoramento de suas práticas. Neste trabalho buscamos lançar luzes sobre um projeto de multiletramentos, que consistiu na produção de um videoclipe, e que teve como objetivo aumentar a motivação dos alunos de alemão de um Centro de Estudo de Línguas de uma escola pública do interior paulista. Para apoiar as nossas reflexões, buscamos sustentação teórica prioritariamente nos conceitos de motivação (DÖRNYEI 1994, 2001, 2014; VALLERAND 1997 e outros) e de multiletramentos (ROJO 2012, 2013). A pesquisa, de natureza qualitativa, desenvolveu-se a partir de dados coletados com alunos do Ensino Fundamental II e Médio de um Centro de Estudo de Línguas do interior de São Paulo durante o ano de 2015. Os resultados apontam para o grande impacto de projetos de multiletramentos na motivação dos alunos.
Galunisertib, a Transforming growth factor-βRI (TGF-βRI) kinase inhibitor, blocks TGF-β-mediated tumor growth in glioblastoma. In a three-arm study of galunisertib (300 mg/day) monotherapy (intermittent dosing; each cycle =14 days on/14 days off), lomustine monotherapy, and galunisertib plus lomustine therapy, baseline tumor tissue was evaluated to identify markers associated with tumor stage (e.g., histopathology, Ki67, glial fibrillary acidic protein) and TGF-β-related signaling (e.g., pSMAD2). Other pharmacodynamic assessments included chemokine, cytokine, and T cell subsets alterations. 158 patients were randomized to galunisertib plus lomustine (n = 79), galunisertib (n = 39) and placebo+lomustine (n = 40). In 127 of these patients, tissue was adequate for central pathology review and biomarker work. Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH1) negative glioblastoma patients with baseline pSMAD2+ in cytoplasm had median overall survival (OS) 9.5 months vs. 6.9 months for patients with no tumor pSMAD2 expression (p = 0.4574). Eight patients were IDH1 R132H+ and had a median OS of 10.4 months compared to 6.9 months for patients with negative IDH1 R132H (p = 0.5452). IDH1 status was associated with numerically higher plasma macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC/CCL22), higher whole blood FOXP3, and reduced tumor CD3+ T cell counts. Compared to the baseline, treatment with galunisertib monotherapy preserved CD4+ T cell counts, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and the CD4/CD8 ratio. The T-regulatory cell compartment was associated with better OS with MDC/CCL22 as a prominent prognostic marker.
Decreased STARD10 expression is associated with defective insulin secretion in humans and mice

Genetic variants near ARAP1 (CENTD2) and STARD10 influence type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk. The risk alleles impair glucose-induced insulin secretion and, paradoxically but characteristically, are associated with decreased proinsulin:insulin ratios, indicating improved proinsulin conversion. Neither the identity of the causal variants nor the gene(s) through which risk is conferred have been firmly established. Whereas ARAP1 encodes a GTPase activating protein, STARD10 is a member of the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR)-related lipid transfer protein family. By integrating genetic fine-mapping and epigenomic annotation data and performing promoter-reporter and chromatin conformational capture (3C) studies in β cell lines, we localize the causal variant(s) at this locus to a 5 kb region that overlaps a stretch-enhancer active in islets. This region contains several highly correlated T2D-risk variants, including the rs140130268 indel. Expression QTL analysis of islet transcriptomes from three independent subject groups demonstrated that T2D-risk allele carriers displayed reduced levels of STARD10 mRNA, with no concomitant change in ARAP1 mRNA levels. Correspondingly, β-cell-selective deletion of StarD10 in mice led to impaired glucose-stimulated Ca2+ dynamics and insulin secretion and recapitulated the pattern of improved proinsulin processing observed at the human GWAS signal. Conversely, overexpression of StarD10 in the adult β cell improved glucose tolerance in high fat-fed animals. In contrast, manipulation of Arap1 in β cells had no impact on insulin secretion or proinsulin conversion in mice. This convergence of human and murine data provides compelling evidence that the T2D risk associated with variation at this locus is mediated through reduction in STARD10 expression in the β cell.
Objective: To investigate if plasma HIV-1 tropism testing could identify subjects at higher risk for clinical progression and death in routine clinical management.
Design: Nested case-control study within the EuroSIDA cohort.
Methods: Cases were subjects with AIDS or who died from any cause, with a plasma sample with HIV-1 RNA >1000 copies/mL available for tropism testing 3 to 12 months prior to the event. At least 1 control matched for age, HIV-1 RNA and HCV status at the time of sampling were selected per each case. Conditional logistic regression was used to investigate exposures associated with clinical progression to AIDS or death. A linear mixed model with random intercept was used to compare CD4+T-cell slopes by HIV tropism over the 12 months following the date of sampling.
Results: The study included 266 subjects, 100 cases and 166 controls; one quarter had X4 HIV; 26% were ART-naïve. Baseline factors independently associated with clinical progression or death were female gender (OR = 2.13 vs. male, 95CI = 1.04, 4.36), p = 0.038), CD4+T-cell count (OR = 0.90 (95CI = 0.80, 1.00) per 100 cells/mm3 higher, p = 0.058), being on ART (OR = 2.72 vs. being off-ART (95CI = 1.15, 6.41), p = 0.022) and calendar year of sample [OR = 0.84 (95CI = 0.77, 0.91) per more recent year, p<0.001). Baseline tropism was not associated with the risk of clinical progression or death. CD4+T-cell slopes did not differ within or between tropism groups.
Conclusions: The predictive role of plasma tropism determined using 454 sequencing in the context of people receiving cART with detectable VL is not helpful to identify subjects at higher risk for clinical progression to AIDS or death.
In the last few decades the concept of self-regulation accompanied the process of dismantling the welfare state. In this context, in central countries—Europe and North America—the importance given to private regulations versus public action increased, thus requiring new mechanisms of legitimacy. To this end, appeals to the principles of economy and technical efficiency to legitimate private regulations have been made by several researchers. However, these principles acquired a negative view in Argentina because they were used to use to legitimate processes that led to various crises, especially taking into consideration the neo-liberal experience of the 1990s. Against this historical background, this paper seeks to show a particular case of legitimizing the self-regulation of non-state organizations (social clubs) by using classic topoi, which had been historically used to legitimize state action. In order to do so, this text focuses on the analysis of “Luna de Avellaneda” Act of 2007, by which the government of Buenos Aires sought to legitimize the self-regulation of clubs appealing to the classical values of democracy, participation, and solidarity. For this, the historical experience of the Argentinean political community will be observed from the perspective of the history of these clubs, thus recovering the social function they played in the diverse political and economic crises.
Intersubjetividade e ontologia social nas revisões da teoria do reconhecimento de Axel Honneth

O artigo sintetiza as revisões que Axel Honneth impôs a sua obra após a recepção crítica de Luta por reconhecimento (1992), propondo compreendê-las como passos intermediários em direção ao novo modelo crítico apresentado em O direito da liberdade (2011), chamado por Honneth de reconstrução normativa. O objetivo não é examinar as determinações de método da reconstrução normativa, mas percorrer o caminho intelectual de Honneth entre suas duas obras principais, explicitando as revisões e os novos pressupostos da obra “madura” do autor. Essas revisões, concentradas ao redor de uma compreensão considerada por Honneth como mais adequada da intersubjetividade e da ontologia social, escoram e justificam as decisões de método do último livro. Desde o início de sua elaboração teórica, Honneth teve de lidar com a objeção de cometer sistematicamente uma falácia naturalista ao buscar o fulcro de uma teoria crítica da sociedade na experiência concreta do sofrimento. Mesmo Luta por reconhecimento ainda esteve justificadamente sujeito à mesma crítica, como Honneth viria a admitir. Argumento que o objetivo das revisões levadas a cabo na década de 2000 foi sanar essa lacuna, encontrando, por um lado, um índice de racionalidade interno ao próprio ato de reconhecimento, e, por outro, um índice de racionalidade presente nas normas e práticas sociais sedimentadas historicamente por relações de reconhecimento.
To imitate all that is hidden. The place of mimesis in Adorno’s theory of musical performance

The article examines the use of the concept of mimesis in Adorno’s notes towards a theory of musical performance. In trying to idiosyncratically define the latter as “reproduction”, Adorno relied on a framework elaborating on concepts introduced by Arnold Schoenberg, Hugo Riemann and Walter Benjamin – a framework that the article discusses insofar as it deals with the problem of mimesis. Specific attention is devoted to the relation between Benjamin’s essays on language and translation and Adorno’s theory of notation, that soon became the crucial aspect of his theory of reproduction. Given the shortcomings of Adorno’s theory, which in the end did not achieve its goals, the article proposes to capitalize on his terminology while at the same time rethinking his framework in the light of recent musicological paradigms for the study of musical performance. On the whole, the article shows that it was Adorno’s philosophical assumptions – in particular the theses of music’s non-intentionality and of its non-similarity to language – that prevented him from convincingly theorizing musical performance, and suggests an alternative framework for future research.
Major mood disorders, which primarily include bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, are the leading cause of disability worldwide and pose a major challenge in identifying robust risk genes. Here, we present data from independent large-scale clinical data sets (including 29 557 cases and 32 056 controls) revealing brain expressed protocadherin 17 (PCDH17) as a susceptibility gene for major mood disorders. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning the PCDH17 region are significantly associated with major mood disorders; subjects carrying the risk allele showed impaired cognitive abilities, increased vulnerable personality features, decreased amygdala volume and altered amygdala function as compared with non-carriers. The risk allele predicted higher transcriptional levels of PCDH17 mRNA in postmortem brain samples, which is consistent with increased gene expression in patients with bipolar disorder compared with healthy subjects. Further, overexpression of PCDH17 in primary cortical neurons revealed significantly decreased spine density and abnormal dendritic morphology compared with control groups, which again is consistent with the clinical observations of reduced numbers of dendritic spines in the brains of patients with major mood disorders. Given that synaptic spines are dynamic structures which regulate neuronal plasticity and have crucial roles in myriad brain functions, this study reveals a potential underlying biological mechanism of a novel risk gene for major mood disorders involved in synaptic function and related intermediate phenotypes.
El texto se propone exponer críticamente algunos contenidos fundamentales del concepto de totalidad y su importancia para el pensamiento dialéctico. Partiendo de una crítica de la concepción hegeliana de totalidad, busca sin embargo defender este concepto, aunque reconstruido desde un giro materialista a partir de la filosofía desarrollada por Theodor W. Adorno. El concepto de totalidad cambiaría su significado y función a partir de la crítica materialista, pasando de la idea de un todo determinado y definitivo, a un criterio epistemológico y normativo para oponerse con efectividad a la imposición de una totalidad social.
The experimental area 2 (EAR-2) at CERNs neutron time-of-flight facility (n_TOF), which is operational since 2014, is designed and built as a short-distance complement to the experimental area 1 (EAR-1). The Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter (PPAC) monitor experiment was performed to characterize the beam pro↓le and the shape of the neutron 'ux at EAR-2. The prompt γ-flash which is used for calibrating the time-of-flight at EAR-1 is not seen by PPAC at EAR-2, shedding light on the physical origin of this γ-flash.
The CERN n_TOF neutron beam facility is characterized by a very high instantaneous neutron flux, excellent TOF resolution at the 185 m long flight path (EAR-1), low intrinsic background and coverage of a wide range of neutron energies, from thermal to a few GeV. These characteristics provide a unique possibility to perform high-accuracy measurements of neutron-induced reaction cross-sections and angular distributions of interest for fundamental and applied Nuclear Physics. Since 2001, the n_TOF Collaboration has collected a wealth of high quality nuclear data relevant for nuclear astrophysics, nuclear reactor technology, nuclear medicine, etc. The overall efficiency of the experimental program and the range of possible measurements has been expanded with the construction of a second experimental area (EAR-2), located 20 m on the vertical of the n_TOF spallation target. This upgrade, which benefits from a neutron flux 30 times higher than in EAR-1, provides a substantial extension in measurement capabilities, opening the possibility to collect data on neutron cross-section of isotopes with short half-lives or available in very small amounts. This contribution will outline the main characteristics of the n_TOF facility, with special emphasis on the new experimental area. In particular, we will discuss the innovative features of the EAR-2 neutron beam that make possible to perform very challenging measurements on short-lived radioisotopes or sub-mg samples, out of reach up to now at other neutron facilities around the world. Finally, the future perspectives of the facility will be presented.
Disturbed homeostasis as a result of tissue stress can provoke leukocyte responses enabling recovery. Since mild hypothermia displays specific clinically relevant tissue-protective properties and interleukin (IL)-22 promotes healing at host/environment interfaces, effects of lowered ambient temperature on IL-22 were studied. We demonstrate that a 5-h exposure of endotoxemic mice to 4°C reduces body temperature by 5.0° and enhances splenic and colonic il22 gene expression. In contrast, tumor necrosis factor-α and IL-17A were not increased. In vivo data on IL-22 were corroborated using murine splenocytes and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) cultured upon 33°C and polyclonal T cell activation. Upregulation by mild hypothermia of largely T-cell-derived IL-22 in PBMC required monocytes and associated with enhanced nuclear T-cell nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT)-c2. Notably, NFAT antagonism by cyclosporin A or FK506 impaired IL-22 upregulation at normothermia and entirely prevented its enhanced expression upon hypothermic culture conditions. Data suggest that intact NFAT signaling is required for efficient IL-22 induction upon normothermic and hypothermic conditions. Hypothermia furthermore boosted early signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 activation by IL-22 and shaped downstream gene expression in epithelial-like cells. Altogether, data indicate that hypothermia supports and fine-tunes IL-22 production/action, which may contribute to regulatory properties of low ambient temperature.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze systematically the influence of the relative centrifugation force (RCF) on leukocytes, platelets and growth factor release within fluid platelet-rich fibrin matrices (PRF).
Materials and methods: Systematically using peripheral blood from six healthy volunteers, the RCF was reduced four times for each of the three experimental protocols (I–III) within the spectrum (710–44 g), while maintaining a constant centrifugation time. Flow cytometry was applied to determine the platelets and leukocyte number. The growth factor concentration was quantified 1 and 24 h after clotting using ELISA.
Results: Reducing RCF in accordance with protocol-II (177 g) led to a significantly higher platelets and leukocytes numbers compared to protocol-I (710 g). Protocol-III (44 g) showed a highly significant increase of leukocytes and platelets number in comparison to -I and -II. The growth factors’ concentration of VEGF and TGF-β1 was significantly higher in protocol-II compared to -I, whereas protocol-III exhibited significantly higher growth factor concentration compared to protocols-I and -II. These findings were observed among 1 and 24 h after clotting, as well as the accumulated growth factor concentration over 24 h.
Discussion: Based on the results, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to enrich PRF-based fluid matrices with leukocytes, platelets and growth factors by means of a single alteration of the centrifugation settings within the clinical routine.
Conclusions: We postulate that the so-called low speed centrifugation concept (LSCC) selectively enriches leukocytes, platelets and growth factors within fluid PRF-based matrices. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effect of cell and growth factor enrichment on wound healing and tissue regeneration while comparing blood concentrates gained by high and low RCF.
Background: This study sought to assess payer costs following cryoballoon or radiofrequency current (RFC) catheter ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in the randomized FIRE AND ICE trial.
Methods and Results: A trial period analysis of healthcare costs evaluated the impact of ablation modality (cryoballoon versus RFC) on differences in resource use and associated payer costs. Analyses were based on repeat interventions, rehospitalizations, and cardioversions during the trial, with unit costs based on 3 national healthcare systems (Germany [€], the United Kingdom [£], and the United States [Embedded Image]). Total payer costs were calculated by applying standard unit costs to hospital stays, using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision diagnoses and procedure codes that were mapped to country‐specific diagnosis‐related groups. Patients (N=750) randomized 1:1 to cryoballoon (n=374) or RFC (n=376) ablation were followed for a mean of 1.5 years. Resource use was lower in the cryoballoon than the RFC group (205 hospitalizations and/or interventions in 122 patients versus 268 events in 154 patients). The cost differences per patient in mean total payer costs during follow‐up were €640, £364, and Embedded Image925 in favor of cryoballoon ablation (P=0.012, 0.013, and 0.016, respectively). This resulted in trial period total cost savings of €245 000, £140 000, and Embedded Image355 000.
Conclusions: When compared with RFC ablation, cryoballoon ablation was associated with a reduction in resource use and payer costs. In all 3 national healthcare systems analyzed, this reduction resulted in substantial trial period cost savings, primarily attributable to fewer repeat ablations and a reduction in cardiovascular rehospitalizations with cryoballoon ablation.

Ants were shown to be significant pollinators of two orchid species in the alpine zone of the Alps. Repeated observations from several localities confirm the ant Formica lemani as pollinator of Chamorchis alpina whereas Formica exsecta is reported here for the first time as pollinator of Dactylorhiza viridis. These findings appear of great interest, as significant ant pollination of orchids is unknown so far from any other region or habitat type in the Holarctic. This raises the question if there are specific adaptations. The observations do not provide suggestions to adaptations of the Formica ants for pollinating orchids – they simply followed their normal foraging behavior shown in any type of habitat. Yet, special adaptations are given by the two orchid species in developing pollination mechanisms more strongly involving ground-moving insects which are not inactivated by increased wind velocity and lower temperatures in the alpine zone. These are mainly beetles and ants. The pollination mechanisms and interactions with ants of both orchid species are described. Dactylorhiza viridis is outstanding among orchids in needing 20 to 30 minutes for the 90-degree forward bending of the pollinium after attachment to the insect’s forehead whereas the same process takes place between 15 seconds and 3 to 5 minutes in other orchids. Forward bending of pollinia is required for precise placement of the pollen at the stigmatic surface of another flower. The very long bending time is an adaptation to the longer presence time of ground-moving insects at the same plant and aims to reduce the frequency of geitonogamy (self-fertilization). The high frequency of ant pollination in these orchids is a consequence of the high activity density of aggressive, predatory worker ants leading to a displacement of other pollinators. Attempts of ants to remove the fresh, strongly adhesive pollinia from their foreheads failed and a single ant head could carry up to eight pollinia.

Tal ambivalência induziu mesmo críticos benevolentes de Goethe a encarar seu projeto da Bildung como um momento preliminar e controverso, cujo acento demasiado individualista viria mais tarde a ser definitivamente suplantado pela dedicação às ciências naturais e àmoral da renúncia. Este artigo se propõe mostrar como a Bildung goethiana, corretamente compreendida como "educação para o erro", institui uma relação de continuidade solidária e complementar entre o erro e a maestria, a qual o poeta alemão vai desdobrar e consagrar em três de suas convicções fundamentais: a dos desvios e deformações como possibilidades constitutivas das leis da natureza e de seu legítimo procedimento formativo; da criação poética superior como um "elevar à altura do espírito e tornar eficiente às intenções da Natureza"; e a da primazia dos "poetas-imitadores" sobre sacerdotes e filósofos na apropriação da tradição sob a égide de uma "pura personificação característica".
Spleen injuries are among the most frequent trauma-related injuries. At present, they are classified according to the anatomy of the injury. The optimal treatment strategy, however, should keep into consideration the hemodynamic status, the anatomic derangement, and the associated injuries. The management of splenic trauma patients aims to restore the homeostasis and the normal physiopathology especially considering the modern tools for bleeding management. Thus, the management of splenic trauma should be ultimately multidisciplinary and based on the physiology of the patient, the anatomy of the injury, and the associated lesions. Lastly, as the management of adults and children must be different, children should always be treated in dedicated pediatric trauma centers. In fact, the vast majority of pediatric patients with blunt splenic trauma can be managed non-operatively. This paper presents the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) classification of splenic trauma and the management guidelines.
Corporatist regulation has a hybrid structure in that it covers state regulation, regulated self-regulation as well as private-public co-regulation. Notably diverging from the standard mode of state regulation, such arrangements required a higher degree of legitimation. Corporatist concepts flourished in the Weimar Republic. This paper deals with three legal scholars’ considerations regarding how to legitimize corporatist models, namely Edgar Tatarin-Tarnheyden, Heinrich Herrfahrdt, and Friedrich Glum. Their institutional touchstone was the Imperial Economic Council, as provided for by article 165 of the Weimar Constitution. This article envisioned a multi-level system of economic councils ranging from regional economic councils up to the Imperial Economic Council and involving representatives of all occupational groups in the performance of state tasks. However, only a Provisional Imperial Economic Council, with a restricted consultative remit, was ever actually established. Based on this model, Tatarin-Tarnheyden, Heinrich Herrfahrdt, and Friedrich Glum conceptualized organizational structures aiming at the comprehensive inclusion of non-state actors. They were legitimized primarily with reference to their output; that is, these organizational forms were supposed to enable a more appropriate and efficient realization of public interests. The input-based argument was basically a question of participation, which implies considerable proximity to typical topoi of democratic legitimation. This similarity is perhaps counter-intuitive, given that corporatist concepts are traditionally associated with anti-democratic ideologies due to their anti-parliamentarian slant. The numerous points of convergence between corporatist and democratic thought simultaneously reflect the heterogeneity of democratic reasoning in the Weimar period and the openness for ideas that were sceptical of—or even hostile to—parliamentary democracy and the party-based state.
Multinormativität ist kein etablierter Begriff. Der Terminus bezeichnet zunächst einmal nur einen Forschungsschwerpunkt des Max-Planck-Instituts für europäische Rechtsgeschichte. Die diesen Forschungsschwerpunkt konstituierende und die Einzelprojekte verbindende Leitfrage ist die nach dem Verhältnis von Recht zu anderen Regeln. Weiter ausgeführt ist dies in einem Aufsatz von Thomas Duve, der Überlegungen dazu enthält, wie Multinormativität erfasst werden kann. Erstens wird hingewiesen auf das analytische Potential der Theorieangebote der Rechtspluralismusforschung bzw. derjenigen Ansätze, die sich hieraus entwickelt haben (normative pluralism, jurisdictional pluralism, interlegality, pluralistic social-legal arenas), aber auch auf deren partielles Ungenügen bei der Erfassung der Fluidität der Interaktion verschiedener normativer Sphären. Zweitens wird auf den Stellenwert von Konventionen, verstanden als zu Routinen geronnene Anschauungen mit normativem Potential, aufmerksam gemacht. Und drittens wird unter dem Stichwort "Dynamik" darauf verwiesen, dass Normativität und das Verhältnis zwischen Normen nicht als statischer Zustand erfasst werden können, dass diese vielmehr in sozialen Praktiken hervorgebracht werden und sich mit ihnen wandeln. ...
Die Hauptquelle für die romantische Wiederentdeckung der Renaissance ist zweifellos Vasaris 'Vite', welche im Cinquecento, in der gottesgesegneten 'aetas aurea' (durch die Werke des Trifoliums Raffael-Leonardo-Michelangelo verkörpert) die vollbrachte "Rinascita delle arti" erreicht sah. Der in den frühromantischen Werken latente Bezug zwischen Renaissance und Revolution war den Romantikern wohl präsent, sodass F. Schlegels berühmtes Athenäums-Fragment, nach welchem die Französische Revolution, Fichtes Wissenschaftslehre und Goethes 'Meister' die drei großen Tendenzen des Zeitalters darstellen, durch eine vierte integriert werden könnte, die auf die Wiederentdeckung der Renaissance als wiedergewonnene "aetas aurea" hinweist.
An important experimental program on Nuclear Astrophysics is being carried out at the n_TOF since several years, in order to address the still open issues in stellar and primordial nucleosynthesis. Several neutron capture reactions relevant to s-process nucleosynthesis have been measured so far, some of which on important branching point radioisotopes. Furthermore, the construction of a second experimental area has recently opened the way to challenging measurements of (n, charged particle) reactions on isotopes of short half-life. The Nuclear Astrophysics program of the n_TOF Collaboration is here described, with emphasis on recent results relevant for stellar nucleosynthesis, stellar neutron sources and primordial nucleosynthesis.
This thematic issue brings together research from political science and legal history about legitimacy discourses covering different forms of public–private co-regulation and private self-regulation, domestic and transnational, past and present. These forms of governance highlight the important role of non-state actors in exercising public authority. There has been a growing debate about the legitimacy of non-state actors setting and enforcing norms and providing public goods and services. However, the focus of this thematic issue is not on developing abstract criteria of legitimacy. Rather, the authors analyze legitimacy discourses around different cases of privatized or partly privatized forms of governance from the early 20th century until today. Legitimacy is subject to empirical and not normative analysis. Legitimacy discourses are analyzed in order to shed light on the legitimacy conceptions that actors hold, what they consider as legitimate institutions, and based on what criteria. The particular focus of this thematic issue is to examine whether the significance of democratic legitimacy is decreasing as the importance of regulation exercised by private actors is increasing.
Factors that cause differential establishment among naturalized, invasive, and native species are inadequately documented, much less often quantified among different communities. We evaluated the effects of seed addition and disturbance (i.e., understory canopy removal) on the establishment and seedling biomass among two naturalized, two invasive, and two native species (1 forb, 1 grass in each group) within steppe and low elevation forest communities in eastern Washington, USA. Establishment within each plant immigrant class was enhanced by seed addition: naturalized species showed the greatest difference in establishment between seed addition and no seed addition plots, native and invasive species establishment also increased following seed addition but not to the same magnitude as naturalized species. Within seed addition plots, understory canopy disturbance resulted in significant increases in plant establishment (regardless of plant immigration class) relative to undisturbed plots and the magnitude of this effect was comparable between steppe and adjacent forest. However, regardless of disturbance treatment fewer invasive plants established in the forest than in the steppe, whereas native and naturalized plant establishment did not differ between the habitats. Individual biomass of naturalized species were consistently greater in disturbed (canopy removed) versus undisturbed control plots and naturalized species were also larger in the steppe than in the forest at the time of harvest. Similar trends in plant size were observed for the native and invasive species, but the differences in biomass for these two immigration classes between disturbance treatments and between habitats were not significant. We found that strong limitations of non-native species is correlated with intact canopy cover within the forest understory, likely driven by the direct or indirect consequences of low light transmittance through the arboreal and understory canopy. Considered collectively, our results demonstrate how seed limitation and intact plant ground cover can limit the abundance and performance of naturalized species in Pacific Northwest steppe and low elevation forest, suggesting that local disturbance in both habitats creates microsites for these species to establish and survive. Future studies evaluating interactions between multiple barriers to establishment using more representatives from each immigration class will further reveal how biotic interactions ultimately influence the demography and distribution of non-native plants within these communities.
Examina-se aqui um estudo realizado por Theodor Adorno acerca das locuções radiofônicas do ativista político de extrema direita nos EUA, o pastor Martin Luther Thomas, à década de 30. Detendo-se nestes discursos por meio do método da análise de conteúdo, Adorno buscava entender os motivos que levaram os indivíduos a perpetuarem as mesmas relações econômicas que suas forças haviam superado, em vez de substituí-los por uma forma de organização social superior e mais racional. Passados mais de 70 anos, este estudo é, sem dúvidas, um instrumental precípuo para compreendermos o atual cenário social, principalmente o político.
Fiktion und Fakten am Beispiel Carmen Elisabeth Puchianus Prosaband "Amsel – schwarzer Vogel"

Literary productions live in a multi-dimensional context. On the one hand, the author and his/her reality play a significant role in the creation of the text; on the other hand, the reference to reality takes place through reception, that is, in a dimension where the author and the text are powerless. I would like to research on Carmen Elisabeth Puchianu’s stories Amsel–schwarzer Vogel (München 1995) from this point of view, as some texts have triggered outrageous reactions. These can be explained to some extent as a confusion between fact and fiction as well as a rejection of new literary discourses both in the German literature in Romania and Romanian literature after the political changes in 1989.
Na+/H+ antiporters are located in the cytoplasmic and intracellular membranes and play crucial roles in regulating intracellular pH, Na+, and volume. The NhaA antiporter of Escherichia coli is the best studied member of the Na+/H+ exchanger family and a model system for all related Na+/H+ exchangers, including eukaryotic representatives. Several amino acid residues are important for the transport activity of NhaA, including Lys-300, a residue that has recently been proposed to carry one of the two H+ ions that NhaA exchanges for one Na+ ion during one transport cycle. Here, we sought to characterize the effects of mutating Lys-300 of NhaA to amino acid residues containing side chains of different polarity and length (i.e. Ala, Arg, Cys, His, Glu, and Leu) on transporter stability and function. Salt resistance assays, acridine-orange fluorescence dequenching, solid supported membrane-based electrophysiology, and differential scanning fluorometry were used to characterize Na+ and H+ transport, charge translocation, and thermal stability of the different variants. These studies revealed that NhaA could still perform electrogenic Na+/H+ exchange even in the absence of a protonatable residue at the Lys-300 position. However, all mutants displayed lower thermal stability and reduced ion transport activity compared with the wild-type enzyme, indicating the critical importance of Lys-300 for optimal NhaA structural stability and function. On the basis of these experimental data, we propose a tentative mechanism integrating the functional and structural role of Lys-300.
Secretins form multimeric channels across the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria that mediate the import or export of substrates and/or extrusion of type IV pili. The secretin complex of Thermus thermophilus is an oligomer of the 757-residue PilQ protein, essential for DNA uptake and pilus extrusion. Here, we present the cryo-EM structure of this bifunctional complex at a resolution of ~7 Å using a new reconstruction protocol. Thirteen protomers form a large periplasmic domain of six stacked rings and a secretin domain in the outer membrane. A homology model of the PilQ protein was fitted into the cryo-EM map. A crown-like structure outside the outer membrane capping the secretin was found not to be part of PilQ.
