- "Plant Community" as a general concept includes both the ideas of a type and of a class. The vegetation type is regarded as a (maximal) correlative concentration of attributes, which includes a certain combination of taxa and their relation to site conditions. The model of the particular vegetation type, which represents an aspect of that type, is based, in general, only on the combination of species. This is based on abstraction from similar concrete communities. The type cannot be individualized by a concrete community. Plant community as a class, here restricted to the term "vegetation unit", means the entirety of similar concrete communities. These incorporate, generally speaking, the elements of the class. The vegetation unit can be artificial or natural. An artificial vegetation unit is defined by a single or by a few attributes, while a natural vegetation unit is defined by the vegetation type, that is by a maximal correlative concentration of attributes.
