The status of the schwa as a phoneme in German : current state of research
- Tento článek se zabývá následující otázkou: Jsou [Ə] a [ɐ] německé fonémy nebo ne? Hlavní myšlenka se zabývá rozmezím testu minimálních párů jako metody k určení fonematického system jazyka. Tento test je úspěšný do té doby, pokud nejsou dané prvky přesně předvídatelné. Ty jsou předpověditelné, pokud existují fonologická pravidla, která vysvětlují výskyt fónu. Zde se argumentuje, ţe /Ə/ je německý foném, ale [ɐ] není.
- In this article the following question is discussed: Are [Ə] and [ɐ] phonemes of German or not? The main point concerns the boundaries of the minimal pair test as the method for establishing the phoneme system of a language. This test only works insofar the items in question are not strictly predictable. They are predictable if phonological rules exist, which can explain the occurrence of the phone. It is argued that /Ə/ is a German phoneme but [ɐ] is not.
