We describe two independent frameworks which provide unambiguous determinations of the deconfinement and the decoupling conditions of a relativistic gas at finite temperature. First, we use the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona–Lasinio model to compute meson and baryon masses at finite temperature and determine their melting temperature as a function of their strangeness content. Second, we analyze a simple expanding gas within a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, which admits a well-defined decoupling mechanism. We examine the decoupling time as a function of the particle mass and cross section. We find evidences of an inherent dependence of the hadronization and freeze-out conditions on flavor, and on mass and cross section, respectively.
Augmented reality (AR) gained much public attention since the success of Pok´emon Go in 2016. Technology companies like Apple or Google are currently focusing primarily on mobile AR (MAR) technologies, i.e. applications on mobile devices, like smartphones or tablets. Associated privacy issues have to be investigated early to foster market adoption. This is especially relevant since past research found several threats associated with the use of smartphone applications. Thus, we investigate two of the main privacy risks for MAR application users based on a sample of 19 of the most downloaded MAR applications for Android. First, we assess threats arising from bad privacy policies based on a machine-learning approach. Second, we investigate which smartphone data resources are accessed by the MAR applications. Third, we combine both approaches to evaluate whether privacy policies cover certain data accesses or not. We provide theoretical and practical implications and recommendations based on our results.
This paper provides an assessment framework for privacy policies of Internet of Things Services which is based on particular GDPR requirements. The objective of the framework is to serve as supportive tool for users to take privacy-related informed decisions. For example when buying a new fitness tracker, users could compare different models in respect to privacy friendliness or more particular aspects of the framework such as if data is given to a third party. The framework consists of 16 parameters with one to four yes-or-no-questions each and allows the users to bring in their own weights for the different parameters. We assessed 110 devices which had 94 different policies. Furthermore, we did a legal assessment for the parameters to deal with the case that there is no statement at all regarding a certain parameter. The results of this comparative study show that most of the examined privacy policies of IoT devices/services are insufficient to address particular GDPR requirements and beyond. We also found a correlation between the length of the policy and the privacy transparency score, respectively.
Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common symptom in people participating in exercise, sport, or recreational physical activities. Several remedies have been proposed to prevent and alleviate DOMS. In 2008 and 2015, two studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of acupuncture on symptoms and muscle function in eccentric exercise-induced DOMS of the biceps brachii muscle. In 2008 a prospective, randomized, controlled, observer and subject-blinded trial was undertaken with 22 healthy subjects (22–30 years; 12 females) being randomly assigned to three treatment groups: real acupuncture (deep needling at classic acupuncture points and tender points; n = 7), sham-acupuncture (superficial needling at non-acupuncture points; n = 8), and control (n = 7). In 2015, a five-arm randomized controlled study was conducted with 60 subjects (22 females, 23.6 ± 2.8 years). Participants were randomly allocated to needle, laser, sham needle, sham laser acupuncture, and no intervention.
In both cases treatment was applied immediately, 24 and 48 hours after DOMS induction.
The outcome measures included pain perception (visual analogue scale; VAS), mechanical pain threshold (MPT), maximum isometric voluntary force (MIVF) and pressure pain threshold (PPT).
Results: In 2008, following nonparametric testing, there were no significant differences between groups in outcome measures at baseline. After 72 hours, pain perception (VAS) was significantly lower in the acupuncture group compared to the sham acupuncture and control subjects. However, the mean MPT and MIVF scores were not significantly different between groups. This lead to the conclusion, that acupuncture seemed to have no effects on MPT and muscle function, but reduced perceived pain arising from exercise-induced DOMS.
The more recent results from 2015 indicated that neither verum nor sham interventions significantly improved outcomes within 72 hours when compared with the no treatment control (P > 0.05).
Introduction: Ferroptosis has recently been identified as a form of programmed cell death caused by an accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, little is yet known about the role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its signalling mechanism as well the modulation of ROS.
Material and methods: Human HCC cell lines were treated with different concentrations of ROS modulators (Auranofin, Erastin, BSO). Cell death was determined by analysis of PI-stained nuclei using flow cytometry. ROS production and lipid peroxidation were analysed at early time points before cell death starts. For mechanistic studies we performed Western Blot and a Proteome array. Different inhibitors of cell death target proteins, ROS-scavengers as well as lipoxygenase inhibitors were used. To investigate the functional relevance of NAPDH oxidases (NOX) 1 and 4 for ROS modulation and ferroptosis we genetically silenced its genes using three distinct siRNAs and we used the NOX1/4-inhibitor GKT137831.
Results and discussions: Compared to the single treatment, Auranofin/BSO-cotreatment as well as Erastin/BSO-cotreatment acted in concert to trigger cell death and to reduce cell viability of HCC cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Furthermore, both cotreatments induce ROS production, lipid peroxidation and ferroptotic cell death, which could be inhibited by the use of Ferrostatin-1 (inhibitor of lipid peroxidation) and Liproxstatin-1 (specific inhibitor of ferroptosis). The broad-range caspase inhibitor zVAD.fmk failed to rescue cells from Auranofin/BSO- or Erastin/BSO-cotreatment induced cell death. No activation of caspases-3 could be seen in the proteome profiler apoptosis assay. Importantly, the selective lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibitor Baicalain and the pan-LOX inhibitor NDGA protect HCC cells from Auranofin/BSO- and Erastin/BSO-cotreatment stimulated lipid peroxidation, ROS generation and cell death, indication that the induction of ferroptosis may bypass apoptosis resistance of HCC cells. Mechanistic studies showed that Auranofin/BSO-cotreatment decreased TrxR-activity, led to Nrf2 accumulation and promoted the activation of HO-1. In contrast, NOX 1 and 4 were involved in Erastin/BSO-mediated cell death and the use of the NOX1/4-inhibitor GKT137831 rescued HCC cells from the Erastin/BSO-induced cell death.
Conclusion: By providing new insights into the molecular regulation of ROS and ferroptosis, our study contributes to the development of novel treatment strategies to reactivate programmed cell death in HCC cells.
We investigate the properties of QCD at finite isospin chemical potential at zero and non-zero temperatures. This theory is not affected by the sign problem and can be simulated using Monte-Carlo techniques. With increasing isospin chemical potential and temperatures below the deconfinement transition the system changes into a phase where charged pions condense, accompanied by an accumulation of low modes of the Dirac operator. The simulations are enabled by the introduction of a pionic source into the action, acting as an infrared regulator for the theory, and physical results are obtained by removing the regulator via an extrapolation. We present an update of our study concerning the associated phase diagram using 2+1 flavours of staggered fermions with physical quark masses and the comparison to Taylor expansion. We also present first results for our determination of the equation of state at finite isospin chemical potential and give an example for a cosmological application. The results can also be used to gain information about QCD at small baryon chemical potentials using reweighting with respect to the pionic source parameter and the chemical potential and we present first steps in this direction.
We will discuss the issue of Landau levels of quarks in lattice QCD in an external magnetic field. We will show that in the two-dimensional case the lowest Landau level can be identified unambiguously even if the strong interactions are turned on. Starting from this observation, we will then show how one can define a “plowest Landau level” in the four-dimensional case, and discuss how much of the observed effects of a magnetic field can be explained in terms of it. Our results can be used to test the validity of low-energy models of QCD that make use of the lowest-Landau-level approximation.
Challenges of FAIR phase 0
(2018)
After two-year's shutdown, the GSI accelerators plus the latest addition of storage ring CRYRING, will be back into operation in 2018 as the FAIR phase 0 with the goal to fulfill the needs of scientific community and the FAIR accelerators and detector development. Even though GSI has been well known for its operation of a variety of ion beams ranging from proton up to uranium for multi research areas such as nuclear physics, astrophysics, biophysics, material science, the upcoming beam time faces a number of challenges in re-commissioning its existing circular accelerators with brand new control system and upgrade of beam instrumentations, as well as in rising failures of dated components and systems. The cycling synchrotron SIS18 has been undergoing a set of upgrade measures for fulfilling future FAIR operation, among which many measures will also be commissioned during the upcoming beam time. This paper presents the highlights of the challenges such as re-establishing the high intensity heavy ion operation as well as parallel operation mode for serving multi users. The status of preparation including commissioning results will also be reported.
We study tetraquark resonances with lattice QCD potentials computed for two static quarks and two dynamical quarks, the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the emergent wave method of scattering theory. As a proof of concept we focus on systems with isospin I = 0, but consider different relative angular momenta l of the heavy b quarks. We compute the phase shifts and search for S and T matrix poles in the second Riemann sheet. We predict a new tetraquark resonance for l = 1, decaying into two B mesons, with quantum numbers I(JP) = 0(1−), mass MeV and decay width MeV.
The changing shape of the rapidity spectrum of net protons over the SPS energy range is still lacking theoretical understanding. In this work, a model for string excitation and string fragmentation is implemented for the description of high energy collisions within a hadronic transport approach. The free parameters of the string model are tuned to reproduce the experimentally measured particle production in proton-proton collisions. With the fixed parameters we advance to calculations for heavy ion collisions, where the shape of the proton rapidity spectrum changes from a single peak to a double peak structure with increasing beam energy in the experiment. We present calculations of proton rapidity spectra at different SPS energies in heavy ion collisions. Qualitatively, a good agreement with the experimental findings is obtained. In a future work, the formation process of string fragments will be studied in detail aiming to quantitatively reproduce the measurement.
The differences between contemporary Monte Carlo generators of high energy hadronic interactions are discussed and their impact on the interpretation of experimental data on ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is studied. Key directions for further model improvements are outlined. The prospect for a coherent interpretation of the data in terms of the UHECR composition is investigated.
The Projectile Spectator Detector (PSD) of the CBM experiment at the future FAIR facility is a compensating lead-scintillator calorimeter designed to measure the energy distribution of the forward going projectile nucleons and nuclei fragments (reaction spectators) produced close to the beam rapidity. The detector performance for the centrality and reaction plane determination is reviewed based on Monte-Carlo simulations of gold-gold collisions by means of four different heavy-ion event generators. The PSD energy resolution and the linearity of the response measured at CERN PS for the PSD supermodule consisting of 9 modules are presented. Predictions of the calorimeter radiation conditions at CBM and response measurement of one PSD module equipped with neutron irradiated MPPCs used for the light read out are discussed.
Charmonia with different transverse momentum pT usually comes from different mechanisms in the relativistic heavy ion collisions. This work tries to review the theoretical studies on quarkonium evolutions in the deconfined medium produced in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions. The charmonia with high pT are mainly from the initial hadronic collisions, and therefore sensitive to the initial energy density of the bulk medium. For those charmonia within 0.1 < pT < 5 GeV/c at the energies of Large Hadron Collisions (LHC), They are mainly produced by the recombination of charm and anti-charm quarks in the medium. In the extremely low pT ∼ 1/RA (RA is the nuclear radius), additional contribution from the coherent interactions between electromagnetic fields generated by one nucleus and the target nucleus plays a non-negligible role in the J/ψ production even in semi-central Pb-Pb collisions.
As a first step, a simple and pedagogical recall of the η-η′ system is presented, in which the role of the axial anomaly, related to the heterochiral nature of the multiplet of (pseudo)scalar states, is underlined. As a consequence, η is close to the octet and η′ to the singlet configuration. On the contrary, for vector and tensor states, which belong to homochiral multiplets, no anomalous contribution to masses and mixing is present. Then, the isoscalar physical states are to a very good approximation nonstrange and strange, respectively. Finally, for pseudotensor states, which are part of an heterochiral multiplet (just as pseudoscalar ones), a sizable anomalous term is expected: η2(1645) roughly corresponds to the octet and η2(1870) to the singlet.
We investigate the well-known vector state ψ(4040) in the frame-work of a quantum field theoretical model. In particular, we study its spectral function and search for the pole(s) in the complex plane. Quite interestingly, the spectral function has a non-standard shape and two poles are present. The role of the meson-meson quantum loops (in particular DD* ones) is crucial and could also explain the not yet conformed “state” Y(4008).
The present study focuses on the beam line optimization from the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS18 to the HADES experiment. BOBYQA (Bound Optimization BY Quadratic Approximation) solves bound constrained optimization problems without using derivatives of the objective function. The Bayesian optimization is another strategy for global optimization of costly, noisy functions without using derivatives. A python programming interface to MADX allow the use of the python implementation of BOBYQA and Bayesian method. This gave the possibility to use tracking simulation with MADX to determine the loss budget for each lattice setting during the optimization and compare both optimization methods.
GSI High Energy Beam Transfer lines (HEST) link the SIS18 synchrotron with two storage rings (Experimental Storage Ring and Cryring) and six experimental caves. The recent upgrades to HEST beam instrumentation enables precise measurements of beam properties along the lines and allow for faster and more precise beams setup on targets. Preliminary results of some of the measurements performed during runs in 2018 and 2019 are presented here. The focus is on response matrix measurements and quadrupole scans performed on HADES beam line. The errors and future improvements are discussed.
We discuss the diffusion currents occurring in a dilute system and show that the charge currents do not only depend on gradients in the corresponding charge density, but also on the other conserved charges in the system—the diffusion currents are therefore coupled. Gradients in one charge thus generate dissipative currents in a different charge. In this approach, we model the Navier-Stokes term of the generated currents to consist of a diffusion coefficient matrix, in which the diagonal entries are the usual diffusion coefficients and the off-diagonal entries correspond to the coupling of different diffusion currents. We evaluate the complete diffusion matrix for a specific hadron gas and for a simplified quark-gluon gas, including baryon, electric and strangeness charge. Our findings are that the off-diagonal entries can range within the same magnitude as the diagonal ones.
Since the last 20 years, modern heuristic algorithms and machine learning have been increasingly used for several purposes in accelerator technology and physics. Since computing power has become less and less of a limiting factor, these tools have become part of the physicist community's standard toolkit [1][2] [3] [4] [5]. This paper describes the construction of an algorithm that can be used to generate an optimised lattice design for transfer lines under the consideration of restrictions that usually limit design options in reality. The developed algorithm has been applied to the existing SIS18 to HADES transfer line in GSI.
This paper is a contribution to exploring and analyzing space-improvements in concurrent programming languages, in particular in the functional process-calculus CHF. Space-improvements are defined as a generalization of the corresponding notion in deterministic pure functional languages. The main part of the paper is the O(n ·logn) algorithm SPOPTN for offline space optimization of several parallel independent processes. Applications of this algorithm are: (i) affirmation of space improving transformations for particular classes of program transformations; (ii) support of an interpreter-based method for refuting space-improvements; and (iii) as a stand-alone offline-optimizer for space (or similar resources) of parallel processes.
In November 2016, magnetotelluric (MT) data were collected at the Ceboruco Volcano in cooperation with the Centro de Sismología y Volcanología de Occidente (SisVoc, Universidad de Guadalajara, Mexico). The Ceboruco is a 2280 m high stratovolcano, located in Nayarit State, Mexico. It is placed in the central part of the Tepic-Zacoalco Rift (TZR), which constitutes the north-western end of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Together with Chapala and Colima (in the Jalisco Block), they form the triple rift system developed as a consequence of the ongoing subduction of the Rivera and Cocos oceanic plates beneath the North American continental crust. Although its last eruption occurred in 1870, it is the most active volcano in the area, showing volcanic-earthquake activity together with ongoing vapor emissions. The survey was part of a geothermal project (CeMIEGeo-P24) and focused on the determination of electrical conductivity properties to characterize the deep structure and the geothermal potential of the Volcano. Frequency dependent magnetotelluric response functions were calculated from 25 broadband MT stations, which covered an area of 10 x 10 km2 including its crater, calderas and foreland. The results were interpreted using anisotropic 3-D forward modelling and isotropic 3-D inversion approaches, considering strong topographical effects. The final resistivity model implies a highly conductive layer, reaching from near-surface to approximately 2 km depth, which might be related to a hydrothermal system. Here, mineralized fluids and clay minerals can cause high conductivities around 1 S/m. For longer periods, the principal axes of the MT response tensors (phase tensor, apparent resistivity tensor) are in good agreement with the strike direction of the underlying rift system. However, they are not rendered by the isotropic inversion. Thus the data suggest an anisotropic electrical conductivity at greater depth with its principal axis determined by the response tensors.
The Specialized Information Service Biodiversity Research (BIOfid) has been launched to mobilize valuable biological data from printed literature hidden in German libraries for over the past 250 years. In this project, we annotate German texts converted by OCR from historical scientific literature on the biodiversity of plants, birds, moths and butterflies. Our work enables the automatic extraction of biological information previously buried in the mass of papers and volumes. For this purpose, we generated training data for the tasks of Named Entity Recognition (NER) and Taxa Recognition (TR) in biological documents. We use this data to train a number of leading machine learning tools and create a gold standard for TR in biodiversity literature. More specifically, we perform a practical analysis of our newly generated BIOfid dataset through various downstream-task evaluations and establish a new state of the art for TR with 80.23% F-score. In this sense, our paper lays the foundations for future work in the field of information extraction in biology texts.
The recognition of pharmacological substances, compounds and proteins is an essential preliminary work for the recognition of relations between chemicals and other biomedically relevant units. In this paper, we describe an approach to Task 1 of the PharmaCoNER Challenge, which involves the recognition of mentions of chemicals and drugs in Spanish medical texts. We train a state-of-the-art BiLSTM-CRF sequence tagger with stacked Pooled Contextualized Embeddings, word and sub-word embeddings using the open-source framework FLAIR. We present a new corpus composed of articles and papers from Spanish health science journals, termed the Spanish Health Corpus, and use it to train domain-specific embeddings which we incorporate in our model training. We achieve a result of 89.76% F1-score using pre-trained embeddings and are able to improve these results to 90.52% F1-score using specialized embeddings.
b̄b̄ud tetraquark resonances in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation using lattice QCD potentials
(2019)
We study tetraquark resonances for a pair of static antiquarks b¯b¯ in presence of two light quarks ud based on lattice QCD potentials. The system is treated in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and we use the emergent wave method. We focus on the isospin I = 0 channel but take different angular momenta l of the heavy antiquarks b¯b¯ into account. Further calculations have already predicted a bound state for the l = 0 case with quantum numbers I(JP) = 0(1+). Performing computations for several angular momenta, we extract the phase shifts and search for T and S matrix poles in the second Riemann sheet. For angular momentum l = 1, we predict a tetraquark resonance with quantum numbers I(JP) = 0(1−), resonance mass m = 10576+4−4 MeV and decay width Γ = 112+90−103 MeV, which decays into two B mesons.
LICE is one of the four major LHC experiments at CERN. When the accelerator enters the Run 3 data-taking period, starting in 2021, ALICE expects almost 100 times more Pb-Pb central collisions than now, resulting in a large increase of data throughput. In order to cope with this new challenge, the collaboration had to extensively rethink the whole data processing chain, with a tighter integration between Online and Offline computing worlds. Such a system, code-named ALICE O2, is being developed in collaboration with the FAIR experiments at GSI. It is based on the ALFA framework which provides a generalized implementation of the ALICE High Level Trigger approach, designed around distributed software entities coordinating and communicating via message passing.
We will highlight our efforts to integrate ALFA within the ALICE O2 environment. We analyze the challenges arising from the different running environments for production and development, and conclude on requirements for a flexible and modular software framework. In particular we will present the ALICE O2 Data Processing Layer which deals with ALICE specific requirements in terms of Data Model. The main goal is to reduce the complexity of development of algorithms and managing a distributed system, and by that leading to a significant simplification for the large majority of the ALICE users.
Based on the positive results of the 0.63 m unmodulated 325 MHz Ladder-RFQ prototype from 2013 to 2016 [1, 2], a modulated 3.3m Ladder-RFQ (s. Fig. 1) has been designed and built for the acceleration of up to 100 mA protons from 95 keV to 3.0 MeV at the FAIR p-Linac [3, 4]. In this paper, we will show the results of manufacturing as well as low level RF measurements of the Ladder-RFQ including flatness and frequency tuning.
We investigate the role of the Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) for light nuclei, at the examples of 12C and 16O. We show that ignoring the PEP does lead not only to a too dense spectrum at low energy but also to a wrong grouping into bands. Using a geometrical mapping, a triangular structure for 12C and a tetrahedral structure in 16O in the ground state is obtained by using the indistinguishably of the α-particles.
A remarkable part of children’ s development and education happens in educational institutions. Acoustic environments in these institutions are usually highly complex and noisy, hence it is demanding to identify relevant target speakers and to ignore irrelevant sounds. Previous research has analyzed auditory selective attention in adults, both in dichotic and binaural listening environments. Until now, there is little knowledge of auditory selective attention in children. In the present work, the original paradigm was adapted by using a task suited for children which included child-oriented elements. Further, the subject’s anthropometric sizes were considered for an aurally-accurate reproduction of the acoustic scene. Twenty-four adults and twenty-four children participated in an experiment on auditory selective attention. Noise and noise-free conditions and various target-distractor distributions in the room were analyzed among others. The result of this experiment revealed significant differences between adults and children, especially in the way auditory attention was influenced by noise.
The Ceboruco is a 2280 m high stratovolcano located in Nayarit State, Mexico. Despite its last eruption which occurred in 1870, it is the most active volcano in the area, showing volcanicearthquake activity together with ongoing vapor emissions. The magnetotelluric survey was carried out in November 2016. It was part of a geothermal project (CeMIEGeo-P24) and focused on the determination of the electrical conductivity distribution in the subsurface of the volcano.
The Magnetotelluric Apparent Resistivity Tensor, as introduced by Brown (2016), can be decomposed into an amplitude and a phase tensor. The fundamental physics behind those new tensors were presented in Hering et al. (2019), using canonical models in 1-D (isotropic and anisotropic) and 2-D resistivity environments. Here, the tensors are introduced for a high-quality data set, where their interpretational benefits become very obvious. Additionally, results from an isotropic 3-D inversion are presented and compared to an alternative 3-D anisotropic forward model.
This publication's objective is to serve as the documentation of a graduate student symposium with the same name held in July 2017. The goal of the symposium was to discuss problems in current film culture with a focus on filmic heritage and innovative projects in the field of film education. Think Film! is a compilation of most of the talks given at the symposium. As quite often conferences or workshops are not documented, the goal of the publication is on the one hand to preserve the results for other scholars, as well as to make them accessible for the general public, and on the other hand to give the panelists a designated space to present their research.
The authors discuss questions of film heritage and digitization, funding, film festivals, film museums and local film culture with a focus on the conditions in Germany, Czech Republic and India as well as relate their findings to the changes film and media studies have undergone in recent years.
Despite the great importance of the Latin language in the past, there are relatively few resources available today to develop modern NLP tools for this language. Therefore, the EvaLatin Shared Task for Lemmatization and Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging was published in the LT4HALA workshop. In our work, we dealt with the second EvaLatin task, that is, POS tagging. Since most of the available Latin word embeddings were trained on either few or inaccurate data, we trained several embeddings on better data in the first step. Based on these embeddings, we trained several state-of-the-art taggers and used them as input for an ensemble classifier called LSTMVoter. We were able to achieve the best results for both the cross-genre and the cross-time task (90.64% and 87.00%) without using additional annotated data (closed modality). In the meantime, we further improved the system and achieved even better results (96.91% on classical, 90.87% on cross-genre and 87.35% on cross-time).
The Specialised Information Service Performing Arts (SIS PA) is part of a funding programme by the German Research Foundation that enables libraries to develop tailor-made services for individual disciplines in order to provide researchers direct access to relevant materials and resources from their field. For the field of performing arts, the SIS PA is aggregating metadata about theater and dance resources from currently, mostly, German-speaking cultural heritage institutions in a VuFind-based search portal.
In this article, we focus on metadata quality and its impact on the aggregation workflow by describing the different, possibly data provider-specific, process stages of improving data quality in order to achieve a searchable, interlinked knowledge base. We also describe lessons learned and limitations of the process.
The annotation of texts and other material in the field of digital humanities and Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a common task of research projects. At the same time, the annotation of corpora is certainly the most time- and cost-intensive component in research projects and often requires a high level of expertise according to the research interest. However, for the annotation of texts, a wide range of tools is available, both for automatic and manual annotation. Since the automatic pre-processing methods are not error-free and there is an increasing demand for the generation of training data, also with regard to machine learning, suitable annotation tools are required. This paper defines criteria of flexibility and efficiency of complex annotations for the assessment of existing annotation tools. To extend this list of tools, the paper describes TextAnnotator, a browser-based, multi-annotation system, which has been developed to perform platform-independent multimodal annotations and annotate complex textual structures. The paper illustrates the current state of development of TextAnnotator and demonstrates its ability to evaluate annotation quality (inter-annotator agreement) at runtime. In addition, it will be shown how annotations of different users can be performed simultaneously and collaboratively on the same document from different platforms using UIMA as the basis for annotation.
We explore the phase structure of the 1+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu model at finite number of fermion flavors using lattice field theory. Besides a chirally symmetric phase and a homogeneously broken phase we find evidence for the existence of an inhomogeneous phase, where the condensate is a spatially oscillating function. Our numerical results include a crude μ-T phase diagram.
Browserfenster : Wissenschaftskommunikation in sozialen Medien
(2021)
We consider a dual representation of an effective three-dimensional Polyakov loop model for the SU(3) theory at nonzero real chemical potential. This representation is free of the sign problem and can be used for numeric Monte-Carlo simulations. These simulations allow us to locate the line of second order phase transitions, that separates the region of first order phase transition from the crossover one. The behavior of local observables in different phases of the model is studied numerically and compared with predictions of the mean-field analysis. Our dual formulation allows us to study also Polyakov loop correlation functions. From these results, we extract the screening masses and compare them with large-N predictions.
The broad class of U(N) and SU(N) Polyakov loop models on the lattice are solved exactly in the combined large N, Nf limit, where N is a number of colors and Nf is a number of quark flavors, and in any dimension. In this ’t Hooft-Veneziano limit the ratio N/Nf is kept fixed. We calculate both the free energy and various correlation functions. The critical behavior of the models is described in details at finite temperatures and non-zero baryon chemical potential. Furthermore, we prove that the calculation of the N-point (baryon) correlation function reduces to the geometric median problem in the confinement phase. In the deconfinement phase we establish an existence of the complex masses and an oscillating decay of correlations in a certain region of parameters.
(2021)
Quenched QCD at zero baryonic chemical potential undergoes a first-order deconfinement phase transition at a critical temperature Tc, which is related to the spontaneous breaking of the global center symmetry. Including heavy, dynamical quarks breaks the center symmetry explicitly and weakens the first-order phase transition. For decreasing quark masses the first-order phase transition turns into a smooth crossover at a Z2-critical point. The critical quark mass corresponding to this point has been examined with Nf=2 Wilson fermions for several Nτ in a recent study within our group. For comparison, we also locate the critical point with Nf=2 staggered fermions on Nτ=8 lattices. For this purpose we perform Monte Carlo simulations for several quark mass values and various aspect ratios in order to extrapolate to the thermodynamic limit. The critical mass is obtained by fitting to a finite size scaling formula of the kurtosis of the Polyakov loop. Our results indicate large discretization effects, requiring simulations on lattices with Nτ>8.
In the strong coupling and heavy quark mass regime, lattice QCD dimensionally reduces to effective theories of Polyakov loops depending on the parameters of the original Wilson action β,κ and Nτ. We apply coarse graining techniques to such theories in 1d and 2d, corresponding to lattice QCD at finite temperature and non-zero chemical potential in 1+1d and 2+1d, respectively. In 1d the method is applied to the effective theories up to O(κ4). Using the transfer matrix, the recursion relations are solved analytically. The thermodynamic limit is taken for some observables. Afterwards, continuum extrapolation is performed numerically and results are discussed. In 2d the coarse graining method is applied in the pure gauge and static quark limit. Running couplings are obtained and the fixed points of the transformations are discussed. Finally, the critical coupling of the deconfinement transition is determined in both limits. Agreement to about 12% with Monte Carlo results of 2+1d Yang-Mills theory from the literature is observed.
We empirically investigate algorithms for solving Connected Components in the external memory model. In particular, we study whether the randomized O(Sort(E)) algorithm by Karger, Klein, and Tarjan can be implemented to compete with practically promising and simpler algorithms having only slightly worse theoretical cost, namely Borůvka’s algorithm and the algorithm by Sibeyn and collaborators. For all algorithms, we develop and test a number of tuning options. Our experiments are executed on a large set of different graph classes including random graphs, grids, geometric graphs, and hyperbolic graphs. Among our findings are: The Sibeyn algorithm is a very strong contender due to its simplicity and due to an added degree of freedom in its internal workings when used in the Connected Components setting. With the right tunings, the Karger-Klein-Tarjan algorithm can be implemented to be competitive in many cases. Higher graph density seems to benefit Karger-Klein-Tarjan relative to Sibeyn. Borůvka’s algorithm is not competitive with the two others.
The order of the chiral phase transition of lattice QCD with unimproved staggered fermions is known to depend on the number of quark flavours, their masses and the lattice spacing. Previous studies in the literature for Nf∈{3,4} show first-order transitions, which weaken with decreasing lattice spacing. Here we investigate what happens when lattices are made coarser to establish contact to the strong coupling region. For Nf∈{4,8} we find a drastic weakening of the transition when going from Nτ=4 to Nτ=2, which is consistent with a second-order chiral transition reported in the literature for Nf=4 in the strong coupling limit. This implies a non-monotonic behaviour of the critical quark or pseudo-scalar meson mass, which separates first-order transitions from crossover behaviour, as a function of lattice spacing.

Objective: Nationwide data on the epidemiology, treatment characteristics, and long-term outcome of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Germany is not yet existing. Neurosurgeons from the German Neurosurgery Society (DGNC) and traumatologists from the German Trauma Society (DGU), therefore, joined forces in 2016 to conceptualize a TBI module for the well-established Trauma Register of the DGU (TR-DGU). Here, we report how this “German National TBI registry (GNTR)” has been developed, implemented, and tested in a recently completed pilot period.
Methods: The conception and implementation process of the GNTR from August 2016 to February 2019 is described, and results of its 23-months long pilot period from February 2019 to December 2020 are presented. For the pilot period, TBI patients were prospectively enrolled at nine neurosurgical and traumatological hospitals across Germany. Inclusion criteria were treatment on the ICU ≥ 24h, or an ISS score ≥ 16. A variety of clinical, imaging, and laboratory parameters were collected, and the GOSE score was used to assess the outcome at discharge and 6- and 12 months follow-up.
Results: Details on the structure and dataset of the GNTR as well as milestones and pitfalls during its conception and implementation, are outlined. During the pilot period, a total of 264 TBI patients were enrolled. Their demographic characteristics, clinical, imaging, and radiological findings, and their early mortality and functional outcome are described. Furthermore, factors associated with an unfavorable outcome (GOSE 1-4) are assessed using uni- and multivariate regression analyses. Finally, problems and future directions of the GNTR are discussed.
Conclusion: The pilot period of the GNTR offers a first glance at the current epidemiology and treatment characteristics of TBI patients in Germany. More importantly, they show how a national TBI registry yielding high-quality prospective data can be developed, implemented, and tested within four years
Background: To investigate whether patients with critical emergency conditions are seeking or receiving the medical care that they require we characterized the reality of care for patients presenting with Neuro-emergencies during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: In this observational, longitudinal cohort study, all neurosurgical admissions that presented to our Department between February 1st and April 15th during the COVID-19 pandemic and during the same time-period in 2019 were identified and categorized according to the presence of a Neuro-emergency, the route of admission, management, and the category of disease. Further, the clinical course of patients with chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) was investigated as a Neuro-emergency representative for a wide variety of semi-urgent symptoms.
Results: During the pandemic, the percentage of Neuro-emergencies among all neurosurgical admissions remained similar as in 2019 but a larger proportion presented through the emergency department than through the outpatient clinic or by referral (*p=0.009). The total number of Neuro-emergencies was significantly reduced (*p=0.0007) across all types of disease, particularly in severe vascular (*p=0.036) but also in spinal (*p=0.007) and hydrocephalus (*p=0.048) emergencies. Strikingly, elderly patients with cSDH and mild to moderate symptoms presented less frequently, with more severe symptoms (*p=0.046) and were less likely to reach favorable outcome (*p=0.003).
Conclusions: Despite pandemic-related restrictive measures and reallocation of resources, patients with Neuro-emergencies should be encouraged to present regardless of the severity of symptoms because deferred presentation may result in adverse outcome. Thus, conservation of critical healthcare resources remains essential in spite fighting COVID-19.
Background: Epileptic seizures are common clinical features in patients with acute subdural hematoma (aSDH); however, diagnostic feasibility and therapeutic monitoring remain limited. Surface electroencephalography (EEG) is the major diagnostic tool for the detection of seizures but it might be not sensitive enough to detect all subclinical or nonconvulsive seizures or status epilepticus. Therefore, we have planned a clinical trial to evaluate a novel treatment modality by perioperatively implanting subdural EEG electrodes to diagnose seizures; we will then treat the seizures under therapeutic monitoring and analyze the clinical benefit.
Methods: In a prospective nonrandomized trial, we aim to include 110 patients with aSDH. Only patients undergoing surgical removal of aSDH will be included; one arm will be treated according to the guidelines of the Brain Trauma Foundation, while the other arm will additionally receive a subdural grid electrode. The study's primary outcome is the comparison of incidence of seizures and time-to-seizure between the interventional and control arms. Invasive therapeutic monitoring will guide treatment with antiseizure drugs (ASDs). The secondary outcome will be the functional outcome for both groups as assessed via the Glasgow Outcome Scale and modified Rankin Scale both at discharge and during 6 months of follow-up. The tertiary outcome will be the evaluation of chronic epilepsy within 2-4 years of follow-up.
Discussion: The implantation of a subdural EEG grid electrode in patients with aSDH is expected to be effective in diagnosing seizures in a timely manner, facilitating treatment with ASDs and monitoring of treatment success. Moreover, the occurrence of epileptiform discharges prior to the manifestation of seizure patterns could be evaluated in order to identify high-risk patients who might benefit from prophylactic treatment with ASDs.
Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier no. NCT04211233.
Background: Research on chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) management has primarily focused on potential recurrence after surgical evacuation. Herein, we present a novel postoperative/non-invasive treatment that includes a supervised Valsalva maneuver (SVM), which may serve to reduce SDH recurrence. Accordingly, the aims of the study were to investigate the effects of SVM on SDH recurrence rates and functional outcomes.
Methods: A prospective study was conducted from December 2016 until December 2019 at the Goethe University Hospital Frankfurt. Of the 204 adult patients with surgically treated cSDH who had subdural drains placed, 94 patients were assigned to the SVM group and 82 patients were assigned to the control group. The SVM was performed by having patients blow into a self-made SVM device at least two times/h for 12 h/day. The primary end-point was SDH recurrence rate, while secondary outcomes were morbidity and functional outcomes at 3 months of follow-up.
Results: SDH recurrence was observed in 16 of 94 patients (17%) in the SVM group, which was a significant reduction as compared with the control group, which had 24 of 82 patients (29.3%; p = 0.05) develop recurrent SDHs. Further, the infection rate (e.g., pneumonia) was significantly lower in the SVM group (1.1%) than in the control group (13.4%; p < 0.001; odds ratio [OR] 0.1). At the 3-month follow-up, 85 of 94 patients (90.4%) achieved favorable outcomes in the SVM group compared with 62 of 82 patients (75.6%) in the control group (p = 0.008; OR 3.0). Independent predictors for favorable outcome at follow-up were age (OR 0.9) and infection (OR 0.2).
Conclusion: SVM appears to be safe and effective in the post-operative management of cSDHs, reducing both recurrence rates and infections after surgical evacuation, thereby resulting in favorable outcomes at follow-up.
Background: Transfusion of red blood cells (RBC) in patients undergoing major elective cranial surgery is associated with increased morbidity, mortality and prolonged hospital length of stay (LOS). This retrospective single center study aims to identify the impact of RBC transfusions on skull-base and non-skull-base meningioma patients including the identification of risk factors for RBC transfusion.
Methods: From October 2009 - October 2016 we retrospectively analyzed 423 primary meningioma patients undergoing surgery for primary meningioma resection our department.
Results: Of these 423 patients, 68 (16.1%) received RBC transfusion and 355 (83.9%) did not receive RBC units. Preoperative anaemia rate was significantly higher in transfused patients (17.7%) compared to patients without RBC transfusion (6.2%; p = 0.0015). In transfused patients, postoperative complications as well as hospital LOS was significantly higher (p < 00001) compared to non-transfused patients. After multivariate analyses, risk factors for RBC transfusion were preoperative American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status score (p = 0.0247), tumor size (p = 0.0006), surgical time (p = 0.0018) and intraoperative blood loss (p < 0.001). Kaplan-Meier curves revealed significant influence on overall survival by preoperative anaemia, RBC transfusion, smoking, cardiovascular disease, preoperative KPS ≤ 60% and age (elderly ≥ 75 years).
Conclusion: We concluded that blood loss due to large tumors or localization near large vessels are the main triggers for RBC transfusion in meningioma patients paired with a potential preselection that masks the effect of preoperative anaemia in multivariate analysis. Further studies evaluating the impact of preoperative anaemia management for reduction of RBC transfusion are needed to improve clinical outcomes of meningioma patients.
Background: Unruptured intracranial aneurysm (UIA) poses a therapeutic dilemma in which the risk-benefit analysis of invasive intervention has to be balanced against the natural history of the disease. To date, there is no medical treatment to prevent aneurysm development and subsequent progression to rupture. We explored the vitamin D system because of its known anti-inflammatory and anti-tissue-remodeling effect as a potential treatment for UIA.
Methods: 25-vitaminD3 levels tested between 2008-2016 and data of SAH patients admitted during the months with a peak versus nadir of VitD3-values were analyzed, retrospectively. We prospectively correlated VitD3 with size and number of aneurysms at the rupture time in patients admitted between 2017-2019. An experimental mice shear stress model and cell culture model were used to investigate the effect of 1,25-dihydroxy-vitaminD3 (1,25-VitD3) and acting mediators in this mechanism.
Results: Based on the retrospective analysis demonstrating an increased frequency of aneurysm rupture rate in patients during the low vitamin D period in winter, we started the prospective study evaluating plasma vitamin D levels at admission. VitD levels were inversely correlated with aneurysm size as well as number of aneurysms. Low number of aneurysms was significantly associated with sufficient plasma Vitamin D level as an independent factor in a multivariate analysis.
From bedside back to bench, active 1,25-VitD3 hormone attenuated the natural history of remodeling in mice basilar artery. Deletion of the vitamin-D-receptor in myeloid cells decreased the protective 1,25-VitD3 effect. Cell-culture of vascular fibroblasts confirmed the anti-tissue remodeling effect of 1,25-VitD3.
Conclusion: 1,25-VitD3 attenuates aneurysm development and subsequent progression to rupture. However, VitD-administration should be tested as optional treatment in management of patients with UIA.
Background: The extent of preoperative peritumoral edema in glioblastoma (GBM) has been negatively correlated with patient outcome. As several ongoing studies are investigating T-cell based immunotherapy in GBM, we conducted this study to assess whether peritumoral edema with potentially increased intracranial pressure, disrupted tissue homeostasis and reduced local blood flow has influence on immune infiltration and affects survival.
Methods: A volumetric analysis of preoperative imaging (gadolinium enhanced T1 weighted MRI sequences for tumor size and T2 weighted sequences for extent of edema (including the infiltrative zone, gliosis etc.) was conducted in 144 patients using the BrainlabÒ software. Immunohistochemical staining was analyzed for lymphocytic- (CD 3+) and myeloid (CD15+) tumor infiltration. A retrospective analysis of patient-, surgical-, and molecular characteristics was performed using medical records.
Results: The edema to tumor ratio was neither associated with progression-free nor overall survival (p=0.90, p=0.74). However, GBM patients displaying IDH-1 wildtype had significantly higher edema to tumor ratio than patients displaying an IDH-1 mutation (p=0.01). Immunohistopathological analysis did not show significant differences in lymphocytic or myeloid tumor infiltration (p=0.78, p=0.74) between these groups.
Conclusion: In our cohort, edema to tumor ratio had no significant correlation with immune infiltration and outcome. However, patients with an IDH-1wildtype GBM had a significantly higher edema to tumor ratio compared to their IDH-1 mutated peer group. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
Background: Dysphagia is a common and severe symptom of traumatic brain injury (TBI) affecting up to 78% of patients. It is associated with pneumonia, increased morbidity and mortality. Although subdural hematoma (SDH) accounts for over 50% of TBI, the occurrence of dysphagia in this subtype has not been investigated. This study investigates the overall frequency, clinical predictors of dysphagia and functional outcome of patients with SDH associated dysphagia.
Methods: All patients presenting in author ́s institution between 2007 and 2020 with SDH were included in the study. Patients with SDH and clinical suspicion for dysphagia received a clinical swallowing assessment by a speech and language pathologist (SLP). Furthermore the severity of dysphagia was rated according to swallowing disorder scale.Functional outcome was evaluated by Glasgow outcome scale (GOS).
Results: Of 545 patients with SDH, 71 patients had dysphagia (13%). The prevalence of dysphagia was significantly lower in the surgical arm compared to the conservative arm (11.8% vs 21.8%; OR 0.23; p=0.02). Independent predictors for dysphagia were GCS <13 at admission (p<0.001; OR 4.17), cardiovascular disease (p=0.002; OR 2.29) and pneumonia (p=0.002; OR 2.88) whereas operation was a protective factor (p<0.001; OR 0.2). All patients with dysphagia improved significantly under SLP treatment from initial diagnosis to hospital discharge (p<0.01). However, patients with most severe grade of dysphagia showed no significant improvement during the clinical course. Patients with dysphagia had significantly worse outcome (GOS 1-3) compared to those without dysphagia (48.8% vs 26.4%; p<0.001).
Conclusion: Dysphagia is a frequent symptom in SDH and the early identification of dysphagia is crucial regarding initiation of treatment and functional outcome. Surgery is effective in preventing dysphagia and should be considered in high-risked patients.
The magnetic fields generated in non-central heavy-ion collisions are among the strongest fields produced in the Universe, reaching magnitudes comparable to the scale of the strong interactions. Backed by model simulations, the resulting field is expected to be spatially modulated, deviating significantly from the commonly considered uniform profile. To improve our understanding of the physics of quarks and gluons under such extreme conditions, we use lattice QCD simulations with 2+1 staggered fermion flavors with physical quark masses and an inhomogeneous magnetic background for a range of temperatures covering the QCD phase transition. We assume a 1/cosh2 function to model the field profile and vary its strength to analyze the impact on the computed observables and on the transition. We calculate local chiral condensates, local Polyakov loops and estimate the size of lattice artifacts. We find that both observables show non-trivial spatial features due to the interplay between the sea and the valence effects.
According to perturbation theory predictions, QCD matter in the zero-temperature, high-density limits of QCD at nonzero isospin chemical potential is expected to be in a superfluid Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) phase of u and d¯ Cooper pairs. It is also expected, on symmetry grounds, that such phase connects via an analytical crossover to the phase with Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of charged pions at μI≥mπ/2. With lattice results, showing some indications that the deconfinement crossover also smoothly penetrates the BEC phase, the conjecture was made that the former connects continuously to the BEC-BCS crossover. We compute the spectrum of the Dirac operator, and use generalized Banks-Casher relations, to test this conjecture and identify signatures of the superfluid BCS phase.

Objective: To determine the influence of surgeons’ level of experience and subspeciality training on the reliability, reproducibility, and accuracy of sacral fracture classification using the AO Spine Sacral Injury Classification System.
Summary of Background Data: An ideal classification system is easily comprehensible and reliable amongst the diverse group of surgeons. A surgeons’ level of experience may have a significant effect on the reliability and accuracy of a classification system. Moreover, surgeons of different subspecialities may have various levels of comfort with imaging assessment of sacral injuries required for accurate diagnosis and classification.
Methods: High-resolution computerized tomography (CT) images from 26 cases were assessed by 172 investigators from a diverse array of surgical subspecialities (general orthopaedics, neurosurgery, orthopaedic spine, orthopaedic trauma) and experience (<5, 5-10, 11-20, >20 years). Validation assessments were performed via web conference using high-resolution images, as well as axial/sagittal/coronal CT scan sequences. Two assessments were performed by each investigator independently three weeks apart in randomized order. Reliability and reproducibility were calculated with cohen’s kappa coefficient (k) and gold standard classification agreement was determined for each fracture morphology and subtype and stratified by experience and subspeciality.
Results: Respondents achieved an overall k = 0.87 for morphology and k = 0.77 for subtype classification, representing excellent and substantial intraobserver reproducibility, respectively. Respondents from all four practice experience groups demonstrated excellent interobserver reliability when classifying overall morphology (k=0.842/0.850, Assessment 1/Assessment 2) and substantial interobserver reliability in overall subtype (k=0.719/0.751) in both assessments. General orthopaedists, neurosurgeons, and orthopaedic spine surgeons exhibited excellent interobserver reliability in overall morphology classification and substantial interobserver reliability in overall subtype classification. Surgeons in each experience category and subspecialty correctly classified fracture morphology in over 90% of cases and fracture subtype in over 80% of cases according to the gold standard. Correct overall classification of fracture morphology (Assessment 1: p= 0.024, Assessment 2: p=0.006) and subtype (p2<0.001) differed significantly with surgeons with >20 years of experience demonstrating increased difficulty correctly classifying all fracture subtypes overall in comparison to the other experience groups. Correct overall classification did not significantly differ by subspecialty.
Conclusions: Overall, the AO Spine Sacral Injury Classification System appears to be universally applicable among surgeons of various subspecialties and levels of experience with acceptable reliability, reproducibility, and accuracy.
