This study treats 76 species, in which 58 species and 14 genera are described as new. The species are arranged in 28 families and 56 genera. The oribatid or cryptostigmatid mites are cosmopolitan group of more than 6500 species relegated to approximate 700 genera and 134 families. The body length of most oribatid species ranges 300-1200 µ. The oribatid mites are darkly coloured and covered with a rigid exoskelecton. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, protonymph, tritonymph, deutonymph and adult. These mites are best known as inhabitants of litter and upper soil strata, their small size and shunning of light caused them to receive little attention for many years. In recently studies of soil fauna, it has been shown that is an economic importance for human, i.e. many species feed on surface plant detritus, and may therefore play a major role in maintaining the fertility of soils; they could become an indicator of soil physical and chemical characters. Some species have also been shown to act as vectors of various tapewonns; they feed almost exclusively on tyroglyphid mites and attack the parasitic hymenopteran, Polynotus zosini; and several species are associated with plant, they have been reported to damage the leaf, the foot and the stem of potato, strawberry, turlip, citrus and mushroom. Systematic studies of these mites are scarcely found in Taiwan. The present paper deals with 76 species, 56 genera in 28 families, among them, 58 species and 14 genera are described as new. The author hopes that this study constitutes an example to show that the wealth of fascinating information could be gained and also hopes that this finding might be useful for elucidating the taxonomy of oribatid mites in Taiwan.
The negative-pion multiplicity is measured for central collisions of 40Ar with KCl at eight energies from 0.36 to 1.8 GeV/nucleon and for 4He on KCl and 40Ar on BaI2 at 977 and 772 MeV/nucleon, respectively. A systematic discrepancy with a cascade-model calculation which fits proton- and pion-nucleus cross sections but omits potential-energy effects is used to derive the energy going into bulk compression of the system. A value of the incompressibility constant of K=240 MeV is extracted in a parabolic form of the nuclear-matter equation of state.
Pion production and charged-particle multiplicity selection in relativistic nuclear collisions

Spectra of positive pions with energies of 15-95 MeV were measured for high energy proton, 4He, 20Ne, and 40Ar bombardments of targets of 27Al, 40Ca, 107,109Ag, 197Au, and 238U. A Si-Ge telescope was used to identify charged pions by dE / dx-E and, in addition, stopped pi + were tagged by the subsequent muon decay. In all, results for 14 target-projectile combinations are presented to study the dependence of pion emission patterns on the bombarding energy (from E / A=0.25 to 2.1 GeV) and on the target and the projectile masses. In addition, associated charged-particle multiplicities were measured in an 80-paddle array of plastic scintillators, and used to make impact parameter selections on the pion-inclusive data. Possessive constructions are grammatical constructions which contain two nominals and express that the referent of one of these nominals belongs to the other. The kind of relationship denoted by possessive constructions is not only that of ownership (1), as the term "possessive" might suggest, but also that of kinship (2), bodypart relationship (3), part/whole relationship (4) and similar relationships [...]. The following investigation will start with possessive constructions on phrase level, i.e. possessive phrases, and then deal with possessive constructions on clause level.
At the end of last year, I designed an inquiry about the present state of linguistic typology in the form of a questionnaire. It was an attempt to cover the whole field by formulating the questions which seemed most relevant to it. This questionnaire is reproduced, without modifications, following this preface. In the first days of this year, it was sent to 33 linguists who I know are working in the field. The purpose was to form, on the basis of responses received, a picture of convergences and divergences among trends of present-day linguistic typology. The idea was also to get an objective basis for my report on "The present state of linguistic typology", to be delivered at the XIII. International Congress of Linguistics at Tokyo, 1982.
It is with great sadness and shock that I (editor) note the tragic death of Vincenzo Roberto Salanitri, on May 15, 1982, known to his friends as Vince. Vince, 38, was a very capable preparator at the Queensland Museum, Brisbane, where he had made many friends over the past 2 years. Previously from Melbourne, Vince was enrolled in an M.Sc. on the population dynamics of the mygalomorph spider genus Stanwellia. Judged by some of his comments, Vince's findings were very provocative to some established ideas. It is hoped that his uncompleted thesis will, if possible, be published.
Number 7 of Australasian Arachnology contains news and notes from the Australasian Arachnological Society. At present the aim of this society is that of other arachnological societies: to promote the study of arachnids, in our case especially Australasian arachnids. In time this aim may become more refined. The newsletter is intended as a means of communication between arachnologists-amateurs and professionals.
Mr Richard Faulder has generously accepted the editorship of Australasian Arachnology while the outgoing editor in New York during 1983. Richard's previous experience in editing similar newsletters will ensure that the 'whole show' is run somewhat more professionally than I have done - Robert J. Raven.

The parities of eleven J=1 levels in 208Pb were determined by nuclear resonance fluorescence scattering of linearly polarized photons. A new 1+ level at Ex=5.846 MeV with Gamma 02 / Gamma =1.2±0.4 eV was found. This level can probably be identified with the theoretically predicted isoscalar 1+ state in 208Pb. All other bound dipole states below 7 MeV with Gamma 02 / Gamma >1.5 eV have negative parity. The 1- assignment to the 4.842-MeV level is of special significance because of previous conflicting results about its parity.
The cyanobacterium Synechococcus (Anacystis nidulans, strain L 1401-1) grown under different light conditions showed variations in pigmentation. Ratios of photosynthetic pigments and the effect on quantum requirement and oxygen evolution were studied. An increase in the ratio of chlorophyll a forms with absorption maxima in the far red regime to total chlorophyll a forms was observed in cells grown in strong white light. The quantum efficiency of orange light (637 nm) - absorbed by phycocyanin - was higher after growth of Synechococcus in white than in red light. The quantum efficiency at 677 nm increased when cells were grown in red light and decreased strongly after transfering red light grown cells to conditions of strong white light. The results show an adaptation of pigment composition to light regimes during growth and its effect on photosynthesis.
Bleaching of chlorophyll was studied in the leaves of rye seedlings (Secale cereale L.) treated with four chlorosis-inducing herbicides of different potency (weak photodestructions, group 1: aminotriazole, haloxidine; strong photodestructions, group 2: San 6706, difunone). Chlorophyll deficiency and particularly the inactivation of a chloroplast marker enzyme, NADP-dependent glyceraldehyde-3-P dehydrogenase, that occurred in the presence of group 2 herbicides were stronger in red, than in blue, light.
When grown in white light of low intensity (10 lx) herbicide-treated leaves contained chloro phyll, 70 S ribosomes and unimpaired activities of NADP-dependent glyceraldehyde-3-P de hydrogenase. At 10 lx only the leaves treated with SAN 6706 and difunone were strongly carotenoid-deficient but not those treated with group 1 herbicides. After all herbicide treatments 10 lx-grown leaf tissue was, however, not capable of photosynthetic O2-evolution indicating some disorder of photosynthetic electron transport. Leaf segments grown at 10 lx were exposed to a high light intensity of 30000 lx at either 0 ° C or 30 °C. In treatments with group 1 herbicides chlorophyll accumulation was stopped in bright light at 30 °C but breakdown was not apparent. Only at 0 °C and in the presence of high, growth-reducing, herbicide concentrations chlorophyll was slightly degraded. The RNAs o f the 70S ribosomes were, however, clearly destroyed at 30000 lx and 30 °C in aminotriazole-treated leaves. In leaves treated with group 2 herbicides chlorophyll was rapidly degraded at 30000 lx both at 0 ° C and 30 °C, however, only in the presence of O2, indicating a true photooxidative and mainly photochemical nature o f the reactions involved. This chlorophyll breakdown was accompanied by the photodestruction of 70S ribosomes and the inactivation of NADP-glyceraldehyde-3-P dehydrogenase.In treatments with group 1 herbicides photoinactivation of the latter enzyme did not occur, although it was clearly localized in the bleached plastids, as demonstrated by gradient separation of organelles.
In the presence of group 2 herbicides the chlorosis was originating from a direct photo oxidation of chlorophyll, accompanied by a massive destruction of other plastid constituents and functions. In treatments with group 1 herbicides photodestructions appeared to be much weaker and insufficient to affect chlorophyll directly. Mediated through some photodestructive inter ference with obviously more sensitive plastid components, such as their ribosomes, further chlorophyll accumulation was, however, prevented.
pH-titrations with NADH show two ionizable groups in mitochondrial and cytoplasmic malate dehydrogenase, the first with a pKa in the range 6.8 -8.3 for the mitochondrial and 6.4-7.8 for the cytoplasmic enzyme, the second with a lower limit at 10.2 resp. 11. Comparison with bis-(dihydronicotinamide)-dinucleotide and dihydronicotina-mide-ribosyl-P2-ribose-pyrophosphate instead of NADH indicates that the second alkaline ionization is caused by a residue placed near the adenine binding site of the active centre of the two isoenzymes. Binding studies with NADH and NAD+ give evidence for the participation of a group in the mitochondrial enzyme with pKa 6.8, deprotonation of which is necessary for detectable association of NAD+. In contrast the fixation of NAD+ to the cytoplasmic enzyme is independent of pH.
The approach outlined in the present paper is based on observations made with African languages. Although the 1000-odd African languages display a remarkable extent of structural variation, there are certain structures that do not seem to occur in Africa. Thus, to our knowledge, an African language having anything that could be called an ergative case or a numeral classifier system has not been discovered so far. It may turn out that our approach can, in a modified form, be made applicable to languages outside Africa. This , however, is a possibility that has not been considered here. The present approach is based essentially on diachronic findings in that it uses observations on language evolution in order to account for structural differences between languages. Thus, it has double potential: apart from describing and explaining typological diversity it can also be material to reconstructing language history.
The basic question is whether POSSESSOR and POSSESSUM are on the same level as the roles of VALENCE, two additional roles as it were. My research on POSSESSION has shown (Seiler 1981:7 ff.) that this is not the case, that there is a difference in principle between POSSESSION and VALENCE. However, there are multiple interactions between the two domains, and these interactions shall constitute the object of the following inquiry. It is hoped that this will contribute to a better understanding both of POSSESSION and of VALENCE.
Ion formation from alkali halide solids caused by the irradiation of high power (some 108 W/ cm2) pulsed lasers is investigated by means of time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LAMMA®). It is shown that the ions are formed directly from the solid state, several uppermost atomic layers being involved; gas phase interactions are negligible. The ion formation rates, however, are in-compatible with the assumption of a quasiequilibrium phase transition, but should be explained in terms of non-adiabatic rate processes discussed in some detail. The light absorption of the transparent halide crystals is assumed to be initiated by multiphoton absorption - free electron production; the further energy transfer being maintained by rapid polaron-Joule-heating. The data are compatible with this model.
The photochemical cleavage of the endoperoxides of anthradichromene and benzodixanthene into the parent hydrocarbon and oxygen is shown to be an adiabatic photoreaction originating from an upper excited singlet state. This photochemical behaviour is described by a theory for the photochemistry of endoperoxides developed by Kearns and Khan.
Stimulated emission from chemically formed excited iodine molecules has been observed. The emission originates from the vibrational state ν′ = 55 of I2(B 3 II). The excited molecules are produced by a three body recombination reaction.
Influence of rotational relaxation on tropospheric OH laser induced fluorescence measurements

Rotational relaxation of OH molecules in the 2II electronic ground state has been observed to occur in collisions with water molecules with gas kinetic probability. It causes an additional contribution to the already well known sources of interference when LIF is used to monitor tropospheric OH. As the laser generated OH is originally produced mostly in high rotational states, the fast relaxation phenomenon leads to a further population of OH in low rotational states. These states are used to monitor tropospheric OH by spectroscopic methods. The observed effect therefore increases the interference. A mathematical analysis is presented, revealing the effect of all relevant parameters.
The energy shift of K electrons in heavy atoms due to the self-energy correction has been calculated. This process is treated to all orders in Zα, where Z denotes the nuclear charge. For the superheavy system Z=170, where the K-shell binding energy reaches the pair-production threshold (E1sb∼2mc2), a shift of +11.0 keV is found. This shift is almost cancelled by the vacuum polarization, leaving a negligible effect for all quantum-electrodynamical corrections of order α but all orders of Zα.
The nucleons taking part in heavy ion reaction are considered as a three-component fluid. The first and second components correspond to the nucleons of the target and the projectile, while the thermalized nucleons produced in the course of the collision belong to the third component. Making use of the Boltzmann equation, hydrodynamical equations are derived. An equation of state for anisotropic nuclear matter obtained from a field theoretical model in mean field approximation is applied in a one dimensional version of the three-component fluid model. The speed of thermalization is analyzed and compared to the results of cascade and kinetic models. NUCLEAR REACTIONS Relativistic heavy-ion reactions, hydrodynamic description.
The collision process is described by hydrodynamical equations. The escape of nucleons which do not take part in the thermal equilibrium is considered by including drain terms in these equations. The energy spectra of the escaped nucleons and of nucleons evaporated after the breakup of the fluid are compared. Two-center level diagrams for the neutron orbitals in the scattering of 16O on 25Mg and of 17O on 24Mg are calculated by using a deformed potential for 24,25Mg. Possible consequences of the nuclear Landau-Zener mechanism, namely the promotion of nucleons at avoided level crossings, and of the rotational coupling between crossing molecular single-particle orbitals are studied for inelastic excitation and neutron transfer. The important excitation and transfer processes, which are enhanced by the promotion process and the rotational coupling, are presented.
