Flows of funds run by banks or by firms that belong to the same financial group as a bank are less volatile and less sensitive to bad past performance. This enables bank-affiliated funds to better weather distress and to hold lower precautionary cash buffers in comparison with their unaffiliated peers. Banks provide liquidity support to distressed affiliated funds by buying shares of those funds that are experiencing large outflows. This, in turn, diminishes the severity of strategic complementarities in investors’ redemptions. Liquidity support and other benefits of bank affiliation are conditional on the financial health of the parent company. Distress in the banking system spills over to the mutual fund sector via ownership links. Our research high-lights substantial dependencies between the banking system and the asset management industry, and identifies an important channel via which financial stability risks depend on the organisational structure of the financial sector.
Contagious stablecoins?
(2023)
Can competing stablecoins produce efficient and stable outcomes? We study competition among stablecoins pegged to a stable currency. They are backed by interest-bearing safe assets and can be redeemed with the issuer or traded in a secondary market. If an issuer sticks to an appropriate investment and redemption rule, its stablecoin is invulnerable to runs. Since an issuer must pay interest on its stablecoin if other issuers also pay interest, competing interest-bearing stablecoins, however, are contagious and can render the economy inefficient and unstable. The efficient allocation is uniquely implemented when regulation prevents interest payments on stablecoins.
Von antiklassisch zu antimanieristisch : Walter Friedländers Neubewertung von Epochenbegriffen
(2023)
Background: Developmentally adapted cognitive processing therapy (D-CPT) is an effective treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adolescents and young adults. It is unclear if therapeutic adherence and competence in D-CPT are associated with higher PTSD treatment gains.
Objective: To assess if higher therapeutic adherence and competence in D-CPT are associated with higher symptom reduction of PTSD in adolescents and young adults, while controlling for therapeutic alliance.
Participants and setting: Participants were 38 patients (aged 14–21 years; M = 17.61 years, SD = 2.42 years) of a multicenter randomized controlled trial in which the efficacy of D-CPT was compared to a waitlist with treatment advice.
Methods: Videotaped therapy sessions were rated using validated ratings scales to assess adherence and competence. Therapeutic alliance was assessed via weekly patient ratings. We used hierarchical linear modelling to assess the relationship of adherence and competence on PTSD symptoms being measured by both clinician and patient while controlling for alliance.
Results: Neither adherence nor competence were related to treatment outcomes in clinician or patient rated PTSD symptom severity. Higher alliance was associated with a lower symptom severity at 12 months posttreatment in both clinician and patient rated PTSD symptoms.
Conclusions: In this study of young adults with PTSD, who were treated with D-CPT by well-trained therapists, therapeutic adherence and competence were not related to treatment outcome. This might be explained by a lack of range in therapist adherence and competence. Therapeutic alliance had a positive effect on PTSD symptom severity.

MoSyD Jahresbericht 2022 : Drogentrends in Frankfurt am Main ; Monitoring-System Drogentrends
(2023)
In this article, we examine anti-refugee hate crime in the wake of the large influx of refugees to Germany in 2014 and 2015. By exploiting institutional features of the assignment of refugees to German regions, we estimate the impact of unexpected and sudden large-scale immigration on hate crime against refugees. Results indicate that it is not simply the size of local refugee inflows which drives the increase in hate crime, but rather the combination of refugee arrivals and latent anti-refugee sentiment. We show that ethnically homogeneous areas, areas which experienced hate crimes in the 1990s, and areas with high support for the Nazi party in the Weimar Republic, are more prone to respond to the arrival of refugees with incidents of hate crime against this group. Our results highlight the importance of regional anti-immigration sentiment in the analysis of the incumbent population’s reaction to immigration.
K+K− pairs may be produced in photonuclear collisions, either from the decays of photoproduced ϕ(1020) mesons, or directly as non-resonant K+K− pairs. Measurements of K+K− photoproduction probe the couplings between the ϕ(1020) and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. We present the first measurement of coherent photoproduction of K+K− pairs on lead ions in ultra-peripheral collisions using the ALICE detector, including the first investigation of direct K+K− production. There is significant K+K− production at low transverse momentum, consistent with coherent photoproduction on lead targets. In the mass range 1.1<MKK<1.4 GeV/c2 above the ϕ(1020) resonance, for rapidity |yKK|<0.8 and pT,KK<0.1 GeV/c, the measured coherent photoproduction cross section is dσ/dy = 3.37 ± 0.61 (stat.) ± 0.15 (syst.) mb. The centre-of-mass energy per nucleon of the photon-nucleus (Pb) system WγPb,n ranges from 33 to 188 GeV, far higher than previous measurements on heavy-nucleus targets. The cross section is larger than expected for ϕ(1020) photoproduction alone. The mass spectrum is fit to a cocktail consisting of ϕ(1020) decays, direct K+K− photoproduction, and interference between the two. The confidence regions for the amplitude and relative phase angle for direct K+K− photoproduction are presented.
Movement of the Rieske domain of the iron–sulfur protein is essential for intramolecular electron transfer within complex III2 (CIII2) of the respiratory chain as it bridges a gap in the cofactor chain towards the electron acceptor cytochrome c. We present cryo-EM structures of CIII2 from Yarrowia lipolytica at resolutions up to 2.0 Å under different conditions, with different redox states of the cofactors of the high-potential chain. All possible permutations of three primary positions were observed, indicating that the two halves of the dimeric complex act independently. Addition of the substrate analogue decylubiquinone to CIII2 with a reduced high-potential chain increased the occupancy of the Qo site. The extent of Rieske domain interactions through hydrogen bonds to the cytochrome b and cytochrome c1 subunits varied depending on the redox state and substrate. In the absence of quinols, the reduced Rieske domain interacted more closely with cytochrome b and cytochrome c1 than in the oxidized state. Upon addition of the inhibitor antimycin A, the heterogeneity of the cd1-helix and ef-loop increased, which may be indicative of a long-range effect on the Rieske domain.
Protein post-translational modification with ubiquitin (Ub) is a versatile signal regulating almost all aspects of cell biology, and an increasing range of diseases is associated with impaired Ub modification. In this light, the Ub system offers an attractive, yet underexplored route to the development of novel targeted treatments. A promising strategy for small molecule intervention is posed by the final components of the enzymatic ubiquitination cascade, E3 ligases, as they determine the specificity of the protein ubiquitination pathway. Here, we present UbSRhodol, an autoimmolative Ub-based probe, which upon E3 processing liberates the pro-fluorescent dye, amenable to profile the E3 transthiolation activity for recombinant and in cell-extract E3 ligases. UbSRhodol enabled detection of changes in transthiolation efficacy evoked by enzyme key point mutations or conformational changes, and offers an excellent assay reagent amenable to a high-throughput screening setup allowing the identification of small molecules modulating E3 activity.
Endothelial tip cells are essential for VEGF-induced angiogenesis, but underlying mechanisms are elusive. Endothelial-specific deletion of EVL, a member of the mammalian Ena/VASP protein family, reduced the expression of the tip cell marker protein endothelial cell specific molecule-1 (Esm1) and compromised the radial sprouting of the vascular plexus in the postnatal mouse retina. The latter effects could at least partly be attributed to reduced VEGF receptor 2 (VEGFR2) internalization and signaling but the underlying mechanisms(s) are not fully understood. In the present study, we revealed that the expression of the long non-coding RNA H19 was significantly reduced in endothelial cells from postnatal EVL-/- mice and in siRNA-transfected human endothelial cells under hypoxic conditions. H19 was recently shown to promote VEGF expression and bioavailability via Esm1 and hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α). Similar to EVL-/- mice, the radial outgrowth of the vascular plexus was significantly delayed in the postnatal retina of H19-/- mice. In summary, our data suggests that loss of EVL not only impairs VEGFR2 internalition and downstream signaling, but also impairs VEGF expression and bioavailability in the hypoxic retina via downregulation of lncRNA H19.

Abstract
We analyze volcanic tremor from Oldoinyo Lengai, Tanzania, which is currently the only active volcano on Earth producing carbonatitic lavas. Here, we use data from the recent SEISVOL deployment and focus on a co-located seismic and infrasound station about 200 m below the summit. We show the very first observations of seismo-acoustic tremor caused by carbonatitic eruptions. This seismo-acoustic tremor is highly variable throughout the ∼one year of data which we characterize by analyzing its seismic amplitude, duration, recurrence, dominant seismic frequency and harmonics. Frequency gliding occurs frequently and over short (minutes to hours) to long time scales (hours to days) and likely reflects different time-dependent mechanisms, such as evenly-spaced repeating events with a change in inter-event times, crater dynamics that alter resonators, and dike intrusions. Seismic and acoustic wavefields correlate well for stronger eruptive sequences but are only partially coherent which suggests that high-frequency seismic tremor (up to 25 Hz) may be caused by the low viscosity of the carbonatitic melt and not by ground-coupled airwaves. In addition, the comparison between seismic-acoustic and satellite InfraRed thermal data allows us to infer different volcanic activity styles which partially alternate throughout the year: intrusive activity and the construction of hornitos, degassing, activity from a lava pond, and varying styles of extrusive activity, in particular spattering. Our study provides important insights into the eruption dynamics of this peculiar volcano which suggests shallow melt storage within the crater floor.
Herein, the high-pressure/high-temperature synthesis (11 GPa, 650 °C) of Tb3B10O17(OH)5 in a modified Walker-type multianvil device is presented. The structure of this rare-earth borate was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods and was found to crystallize orthorhombically in the space group Pmn21 (no. 31) with the unit cell parameters a = 16.2527(4), b = 4.4373(1), and c = 8.8174(2) Å. The new compound was further characterized using infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements, and temperature-dependent X-ray powder diffraction. Tb3B10O17(OH)5 decomposes to β-Tb(BO2)3 at temperatures higher than 460 °C. With increasing temperatures, the formation of μ-TbBO3 was observed, which transforms to π-TbBO3 upon cooling.
Spinal Tumors / Infections (Spine Parallel Session v.3), September 27, 2023, 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Background: The optimal treatment of patients with spinal infections remains a controversial topic. While there is some consensus regarding the indication for surgical intervention in infections with neurologic deficit, significant deformity or progressive disease, other situations remain controversial. Within Europe, fundamentally different therapeutic concepts are found. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the outcome of patients who received surgical vs. antibiotic treatment alone for primary pyogenic spondylodiscitis in an international cohort analysis.
Methods: The retrospectively compiled databases of tertiary high-volume spine centers served as the baseline for this study. All documented cases of primary spondylodiscitis treated surgically and conservatively in the period of 2017-2022 were included and grouped according to the therapeutic concept: conservative vs. surgical treatment. Independent investigators collected the relevant clinical and radiological data. The primary endpoint of this study was mortality rate; secondary endpoints were relapse rate and persisting neurological deficit.
Results: A total of 392 patients were included in the analysis (155 females and 237 males with a mean age of 68 years). Of these, 95 cases were treated conservatively (CoT) and 297 cases were treated surgically (SuT). Most of conservatively treated patients were treated in the United Kingdom (CoT 81/ SuT 7), while most of the surgically treated cases were treated in Germany (CoT 14/ SuT 290). There was no significant difference (p<0.01) related to patient’s disease characteristics:
Lumbar was the main location (n=240, CoT 58/ SuT 182, p=0.97) followed by thoracic (n=70, CoT 24/ SuT 46, p=0,03) and cervical (n=47, CoT 7/ SuT 40, p=0.11) region. A multilocular spinal infection was present in 32 patients (CoT 3/ SuT 29, p=0.04). 181 cases (CoT 36/ SuT 145, p=0.06) presented with an epidural abscess. Neurological deficits were recorded in 100 cases (CoT 26/ SuT 74, p=0.63), and septic conditions in 88 cases (CoT 26/ SuT 62, p=0.19). Pre-existing conditions like Diabetes (CoT 20/, SuT 71, p=0.57), renal failure (CoT 19/ SuT 60, p= 0.97), hepatopathy (CoT 4/ SuT 26, p= 0.15), malignoma (CoT 9/ SuT 38, p=0.39) or i.v. drug abuse (CoT 5/, SuT 15, p=0.93) did also not differ between the groups.
The mortality rate of all conservatively treated was 24.2% (23 cases) and 6.7% (20 cases) in all surgically treated patients (p<0.001). A follow-up of ≥ 6 weeks was available in 289 cases (CoT 83, SuT 206 ). In this subset of patients relapse of infection occurred in six (7.2%) and 23 (11.2%) cases in the conservative and early surgical treatment group, respectively (p=0.69). Persisting neurological deficit was recorded in 21 (25.3%) of conservatively treated and 51 (24.8%) of surgically treated cases (p=0.92).
Conclusions: Whereas relapse rates and persisting neurological deficit were not found to differ significantly, the results of this international data analyses, with their respective limitations, clearly support the growing evidence of a significantly reduced mortality rate after surgical therapy for primary pyogenic spondylodiscitis when compared to conservative treatment regimen.
Can prediction error explain predictability effects on the N1 during picture-word verification?
(2023)
Do early effects of predictability in visual word recognition reflect prediction error? Electrophysiological research investigating word processing has demonstrated predictability effects in the N1, or first negative component of the event-related potential (ERP). However, findings regarding the magnitude of effects and potential interactions of predictability with lexical variables have been inconsistent. Moreover, past studies have typically used categorical designs with relatively small samples and relied on by-participant analyses. Nevertheless, reports have generally shown that predicted words elicit less negative-going (i.e., lower amplitude) N1s, a pattern consistent with a simple predictive coding account. In our preregistered study, we tested this account via the interaction between prediction magnitude and certainty. A picture-word verification paradigm was implemented in which pictures were followed by tightly matched picture-congruent or picture-incongruent written nouns. The predictability of target (picture-congruent) nouns was manipulated continuously based on norms of association between a picture and its name. ERPs from 68 participants revealed a pattern of effects opposite to that expected under a simple predictive coding framework.
An important question concerning inter-areal communication in the cortex, is whether these interactions are synergistic, i.e. convey information beyond what can be performed by isolated signals. Here, we dissociated cortical interactions sharing common information from those encoding complementary information during prediction error processing. To this end, we computed co-information, an information-theoretical measure that distinguishes redundant from synergistic information among brain signals. We analyzed auditory and frontal electrocorticography (ECoG) signals in three common awake marmosets and investigated to what extent event-related-potentials (ERP) and broadband (BB) dynamics exhibit redundancy and synergy in auditory prediction error signals. We observed multiple patterns of redundancy and synergy across the entire cortical hierarchy with distinct dynamics. The information conveyed by ERPs and BB signals was highly synergistic even at lower stages of the hierarchy in the auditory cortex, as well as between lower and higher areas in the frontal cortex. These results indicate that the distributed representations of prediction error signals across the cortical hierarchy can be highly synergistic.
The interaction of Eph receptor tyrosine kinases with their transmembrane ligands; the ephrins, is important for the regulation of cell-cell communication. Ephrin-Eph signaling is probably best known for the discrimination of arterial and venous territories by repulsion of venous endothelial cells away from those with an arterial fate. Ultimately, cell repulsion is mediated by initiating the collapse of the actin cytoskeleton in membrane protrusions. Here, we investigated the role of the Ena/VASP family of actin binding proteins in endothelial cell repulsion initiated by ephrin ligands. Human endothelial cells dynamically extended sheet-like lamellipodia over ephrin-B2 coated surfaces. While lamellipodia of control siRNA transfected cells rapidly collapsed, resulting in a pronounced cell repulsion from the ephrin-B2 surfaces, the knockdown of Ena/VASP proteins impaired the cytoskeletal collapse of membrane protrusions and the cells no longer avoided the repulsive surfaces. Mechanistically, ephrin-B2 stimulation elicited the EphB-mediated tyrosine phosphorylation of VASP, which abrogated its interaction with the focal adhesion protein Zyxin. Nck2 was identified as a novel VASP binding protein, which only interacted with the tyrosine phosphorylated VASP protein. Nck links Eph-receptors to the actin cytoskeleton. Therefore, we hypothesize that Nck-Ena/VASP complex formation is required for actin reorganization and/or Eph receptor internalization downstream of ephrin-Eph interaction in endothelial cells, with implications for endothelial navigation and pathfinding.
