Die Geowissenschaftlerin Dr. Sonja Aulbach erforscht die damals ablaufenden Prozesse anhand spezieller Gesteinsproben und mit hochmoderner Analysetechnik.

Die Ausstellung „Bilder werfen“, die am 30. November eröffnet wird, erkundet die Geschichte studentischer Filmkultur an der Goethe-Universität. Über mehr als siebzig Jahre prägte eine Vielzahl von Gruppen mit sehr unterschiedlichen Zielsetzungen und jeweils eigenem Selbstverständnis geprägt diese Entwicklung - seit der Gründung des "Film-Studio“ im Jahr 1951 bis zum aktuellen Pupille-Kino.
The study of the azimuthal anisotropy of inclusive muons produced in p–Pb collisions at √sNN=8.16 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the LHC is reported. The measurement of the second-order Fourier coefficient of the particle azimuthal distribution, v2, is performed as a function of transverse momentum pT in the 0–20% high-multiplicity interval at both forward (2.03<yCMS<3.53) and backward (−4.46<yCMS<−2.96) rapidities over a wide pT range, 0.5<pT<10 GeV/c, in which a dominant contribution of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays is expected at pT>2 GeV/c. The v2 coefficient of inclusive muons is extracted using two different techniques, namely two-particle cumulants, used for the first time for heavy-flavour measurements, and forward–central two-particle correlations. Both techniques give compatible results. A positive v2 is measured at both forward and backward rapidities with a significance larger than 4.7σ and 7.6σ, respectively, in the interval 2<pT<6 GeV/c. Comparisons with previous measurements in p–Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV, and with AMPT and CGC-based theoretical calculations are discussed. The findings impose new constraints on the theoretical interpretations of the origin of the collective behaviour in small collision systems.
Investors' return expectations are pivotal in stock markets, but the reasoning behind these expectations remains a black box for economists. This paper sheds light on economic agents' mental models -- their subjective understanding -- of the stock market, drawing on surveys with the US general population, US retail investors, US financial professionals, and academic experts. Respondents make return forecasts in scenarios describing stale news about the future earnings streams of companies, and we collect rich data on respondents' reasoning. We document three main results. First, inference from stale news is rare among academic experts but common among households and financial professionals, who believe that stale good news lead to persistently higher expected returns in the future. Second, while experts refer to the notion of market efficiency to explain their forecasts, households and financial professionals reveal a neglect of equilibrium forces. They naively equate higher future earnings with higher future returns, neglecting the offsetting effect of endogenous price adjustments. Third, a series of experimental interventions demonstrate that these naive forecasts do not result from inattention to trading or price responses but reflect a gap in respondents' mental models -- a fundamental unfamiliarity with the concept of equilibrium.
Do required minimum distribution 401(k) rules matter, and for whom? Insights from a lifecycle model

Tax-qualified vehicles have helped U.S. private-sector workers accumulate $33Tr in retirement plans. An often-overlooked important institutional feature shaping decumulations from these plans is the “Required Minimum Distribution” (RMD) regulation requiring retirees to withdraw a minimum fraction from their retirement accounts or pay excise taxes on withdrawal shortfalls. Our calibrated lifecycle model measures the impact of RMD rules on heterogeneous households’ financial behavior during their work lives and in retirement. The model shows that reforms delaying or eliminating the RMD rules have little effect on consumption profiles, but they would influence withdrawals and tax payments for households with bequest motives.
This paper investigates stock market reaction to greenwashing by analyzing a new channel whereby companies change their names to green-related ones (i.e., names that evoke green and sustainable sentiments) to persuade the public that their activities are green. The findings reveal a striking positive stock price reaction to the announcement of corporate name changes to green-related names only for companies not involved in green activities at the time of the announcement. However, over an extended period of time, companies unrelated to green activities experience substantial negative abnormal returns if they fail to align their operational focus with the new name after the change.
In crisis times, insurance companies might feel the pressure to present an investment portfolio performance that is superior to the market, since investment portfolios back the claims of policyholders and serve as a signal for the claims’ safety. I investigate how a stock market crisis as experienced over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic influences insurance firms’ decisions on the allocation of their corporate bond portfolio. I find that insurers shift their portfolio holdings towards lower credit risk assets as financial market conditions tighten. This tendency seems to be restricted by the liquidity risk of high-yield assets, and the credit risk of lower-rated investment grade assets. Both effects lead to an increase in the fraction of less liquid assets during the crash and the recovery.
We propose a model with mean-variance foreign investors who exhibit a convex disutility associated to brown bond holdings. The model predicts that bond green premia should be smaller in economies with a closer financial account and highly volatile exchange rates. This happens because foreign intermediaries invest relatively less in such economies, and this lowers the marginal disutility of investing in polluting activities. We find strong empirical evidence in favor of this hypothesis using a global bond market dataset. Exchange rate volatility and financial account openness are thus able to explain the higher financing costs of green projects in emerging markets relative to advanced economies, especially when green bonds are denominated in local currency: a disadvantage that we can call the "green sin" of emerging economies.
A faunal study for the order Phasmatodea of the Chicaque Natural Park is presented, including a list of species found, descriptions, redescriptions, and biological notes. A total of nine species were found and studied; two new genera: Ramandeun new genus, Nubilophasma new genus, and four new species: Atratomorpha jorgei new species, Isagoras franciscoverai new species, Nubilophasma chicaquensis new genus and new species, and Ramandeum coronatum new genus and new species are described. The description of the eggs of the new taxa, of the previously unknown eggs of Paraceroys quadrispinosus (Redtenbacher, 1906), and the redescription of the eggs of Libethra rabdota Stål, 1875, and Libethra inchoata Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1907 are provided. Additional comments on the ecology and morphological variation of the reviewed taxa are included. Finally, further studies on the stick insect fauna of the Colombian Andes are discussed and recommended to provide more information to broaden the understanding of the species that inhabit this complex mountain system.

The measurement of the production of charm jets, identified by the presence of a D0 meson in the jet constituents, is presented in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The D0 mesons were reconstructed from their hadronic decay D0 → K−π+ and the respective charge conjugate. Jets were reconstructed from D0-meson candidates and charged particles using the anti-kT algorithm, in the jet transverse momentum range 5 < pT,chjet < 50 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |ηjet| < 0.9 − R, and with the jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6. The distribution of the jet momentum fraction carried by a D0 meson along the jet axis (z ch) was measured in the range 0.4 < z ch < 1.0 in four ranges of the jet transverse momentum. Comparisons of results for different collision energies and jet resolution parameters are also presented. The measurements are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators based on leading-order and next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. A generally good description of the main features of the data is obtained in spite of a few discrepancies at low pT,chjet. Measurements were also done for R = 0.3 at √s = 5.02 and are shown along with their comparisons to theoretical predictions in an appendix to this paper.
Eight new species of Itauara Müller, 1888 are described based on specimens collected in southeastern Brazil: I. bispinata sp. nov., I. caparao sp. nov., I. cipoensis sp. nov., I. cristata sp. nov., I. holzenthali sp. nov., I. mangaratiba sp. nov., I. robertsonae sp. nov., and I. rupicola sp. nov. In addition, we provided an updated distributional list of species of Itauara, with new records of I. jamesii Robertson & Holzenthal, 2011 and I. lucinda Robertson & Holzenthal, 2011 for Espírito Santo State (Brazil), I. plaumanni (Flint, 1974) for Paraná State (Brazil), and I. tusci Robertson & Holzenthal, 2011 for Minas Gerais State (Brazil). We performed an equal weighted parsimony analysis adding the new species to the dataset provided by Robertson & Holzenthal (2013), with modification of the interpretation of some morphological characters. The genus was recovered as monophyletic, but overall statistic support for clades was weak. Itauara is restricted to South America and has a disjunct distribution, with some species occurring in northern South America and others in southeastern South America. Probably, the diversification of Itauara in South America is related to the connections between the Amazon Forest and the Atlantic Forest through historical events at different times.
Nok Eisen : zentralnigerianische Eisenverhüttung in der Mitte des ersten Jahrtausends vor Christus

Based on excavations, excavation documentation and archaeometallurgical analyses, this thesis aims to characterise Nok iron production in central Nigeria through a contextually based investigation.
In 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2016, the Nok research project at Goethe University Frankfurt/Main in collaboration with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Nigeria excavated 27 iron-smelting furnaces from 8 sites 60 kilometres north of Abuja. All furnaces date around the middle of the first millennium BCE. Absolute dates, relative pottery chronology and terracotta figurine finds in furnace contexts suggest their affiliation to the Nok context. In comparison, all 27 furnaces resemble each other closely regarding their design and spacial arrangement. The numbers of furnaces per site, furnace width, furnace wall angle and thickness as well as pits beneath the furnaces are just some features with similar qualities. The similarities of the smelting sites also extend into their finds: the structure of tuyères and their position in situ as well as macroscopic slag morphology and distribution. Find morphology and distribution as well as furnace structure suggest a highly standardized way of Nok iron production. However, archaeometallurgical analyses show heterogeneous use of raw materials between sites and/or furnaces. In similarly structured furnaces different kinds of iron ore were smelted leaving a high iron content in the respective slags. This hints at an early stage of iron production in which the smelting process was limited to one operative set-up.
Background: In the speciation continuum the strength of reproductive isolation varies, and species boundaries are blurred by gene flow. Interbreeding among giraffe (Giraffa spp.) in captivity is known and anecdotal reports of natural hybrids exist. In Kenya, Nubian (G. camelopardalis camelopardalis), reticulated (G. reticulata), and Masai giraffe sensu stricto (G. tippelskirchi tippelskirchi) are parapatric, and thus the country might be a melting pot for these taxa. We analyzed 128 genomes of wild giraffe, 113 newly sequenced, representing these three taxa.
Results: We found varying levels of Nubian ancestry in 13 reticulated giraffe sampled across the Laikipia Plateau most likely reflecting historical gene flow between these two lineages. Although comparatively weaker signs of ancestral gene flow and potential mitochondrial introgression from reticulated into Masai giraffe were also detected, estimated admixture levels between these two lineages are minimal. Importantly, contemporary gene flow between East African giraffe lineages was not statistically significant. Effective population sizes have declined since the Late Pleistocene, more severely for Nubian and reticulated giraffe.
Conclusions: Despite historically hybridizing, these three giraffe lineages have maintained their overall genomic integrity suggesting effective reproductive isolation, consistent with the previous classification of giraffe into four species.
We explore the potential of optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) to infer the laminar origins of neural activity non-invasively. OPM sensors can be positioned closer to the scalp than conventional cryogenic MEG sensors, opening an avenue to higher spatial resolution when combined with high-precision forward modelling. By simulating the forward model projection of single dipole sources onto OPM sensor arrays with varying sensor densities and measurement axes, and employing sparse source reconstruction approaches, we find that laminar inference with OPM arrays is possible at relatively low sensor counts at moderate to high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). We observe improvements in laminar inference with increasing spatial sampling densities and number of measurement axes. Surprisingly, moving sensors closer to the scalp is less advantageous than anticipated - and even detrimental at high SNRs. Biases towards both the superficial and deep surfaces at very low SNRs and a notable bias towards the deep surface when combining empirical Bayesian beamformer (EBB) source reconstruction with a whole-brain analysis pose further challenges. Adequate SNR through appropriate trial numbers and shielding, as well as precise co-registration, is crucial for reliable laminar inference with OPMs.

Background: Despite current clinical guidelines recommending suboccipital decompressive craniectomy (SDC) in patients with space-occupying cerebellar infarction when neurological deterioration occurs, the precise definition of such deterioration remains unclear. The current study aimed at characterizing whether clinical outcomes can be predicted by the GCS score immediately prior to SDC, and whether higher GCS scores are associated with better clinical outcomes. We aimed to characterize whether clinical outcomes can be predicted by the GCS score immediately prior to SDC, and if higher GCS scores are associated with better clinical outcomes.
Methods: In a single-center, retrospective analysis of 51 patients treated with SDC for space-occupying cerebellar infarction clinical and imaging data were evaluated at the timepoints of symptom onset, hospital admission and preoperatively. Clinical outcome was measured by mRS at the last available follow-up. Preoperative GCS scores were stratified into three groups (GCS 3-8, 9-11 and 12-15). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed using clinical and radiological parameters as predictors of clinical outcome.
Results: In Cox-regression analysis using mRS of 1-2 as a positive clinical outcome we found a significant increase in the proportional hazard ratio (HR) of 6.581 [CI 1.839-36.414]; p=0.031 for GCS scores of 12-15 prior to SDC. Clinical outcomes (mRS 3-6) were associated with infarct volume above 6.0 cm3 (HR 2.473 [CI 1.209-5.057]; p=0.013), tonsillar herniation (HR: 0.279 [CI 0.083-0.933]; p=0.038), brainstem compression (HR 0.304 [CI 0.123-0.749]; p=0.010) and a preoperative GCS score of 3-8 (HR 2.386 [CI 1.160-4.906]; p=0.018).
Conclusions: SDC should be considered in patients with infarct volumes above 6.0 cm3 with GCS scores higher than previously described in the literature, as these patients may show better long-term outcome than those in which surgery is delayed until a GCS score of 11 or lower.
n this Letter, the first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antitriton−nucleus interactions is reported, covering the momentum range of 0.8≤p<2.4 GeV/c. The measurement is carried out using data recorded with the ALICE detector in pp and Pb−Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon of 13 TeV and 5.02 TeV, respectively. The detector material serves as an absorber for antitriton nuclei. The raw yield of (anti)triton nuclei measured with the ALICE apparatus is compared to the results from detailed ALICE simulations based on the GEANT4 toolkit for the propagation of (anti)particles through matter, allowing one to quantify the inelastic interaction probability in the detector material. This analysis complements the measurement of the inelastic cross section of antinuclei up to A=3 carried out by the ALICE Collaboration, and demonstrates the feasibility of the study of the isospin dependence of inelastic interaction cross section with the analysis techniques presented in this Letter.
Im Wesentlichen liefern die beiden Romane - dies soll im Folgenden gezeigt werden - Beispiele für eine Kontinuitätsthese, die Martin Weiß als Lesart benennt: die Fortführung bzw. das unsichtbare (Wieder-)Aufgehen souveräner Macht im biopolitischen Regulieren und Disziplinieren. Um die 'verbundene Polarität' plastisch werden zu lassen, wähle ich die Metapher des Gängelbands als Veranschaulichung, die eine doppelte Lesart in sich vereint: Zum einen steht sie für einen lebenssichernden, biopolitischen Eingriff, der trotz Kontrolle durch die charakteristische 'Steigerung des Lebens' ein repressives Movens ausschließt; zum anderen erweist sie sich als gleichsam rückläufiges Modell, das das 'alte Recht' der autoritären Zucht rehabilitiert. In diesem historischen Rahmen "gesellschaftlicher Transformationsprozesse", manifestiert sich ein (anti-)biopolitisches Wechselspiel. Dieses Spannungsverhältnis findet sich als literarische Reflexion nicht nur in Grosses Roman, sondern auch in Goethes "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" (1795/1796). Die Protagonisten beider Romane treffen auf sektenähnliche Gruppen, die sie wie am Gängelband führen und so direkt in das Leben der 'Jünglinge' eingreifen. Wie sich dies genau ausgestaltet, soll sich in der folgenden Analyse zeigen.
Glioblastoma is a very aggressive tumor and represents the most common primary brain malignancy. Key characteristics include its high resistance against conventional treatments, such as radio- and chemotherapy and its diffuse tissue infiltration, preventing complete surgical resection. The analysis of migration and invasion processes in a physiological microenvironment allows for enhanced understanding of these processes and can lead to improved therapeutic approaches. Here, we combine two state-of-the-art techniques, adult organotypic brain tissue slice culture (OTC) and light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) of cleared tissues in a combined method termed OTCxLSFM. Using this methodology, we can show that glioblastoma tissue infiltration can be effectively blocked through treatment with arsenic trioxide, as well as genetic depletion of the tetraspanin, transmembrane receptor CD9. With our analysis-pipeline we gain single-cell level, three-dimensional information, as well as insights into the morphological appearance of the tumor cells.
Intersektionalität hält als Forschungsgegenstand, als Schauplatz theoretischer Diskussion und als Analyseperspektive seit Jahren verstärkt Einzug in unterschiedliche akademische Disziplinen und Bereiche. Es verwundert daher nicht, dass sich das Intersektionalitätsparadigma auch im Bereich der Literaturwissenschaft und -didaktiken zunehmend als produktiv erweist, wie wir mit dem Sammelband zeigen wollen, der intersektionale literaturwissenschaftliche und -didaktische Fallstudien aus unterschiedlichen Philologien versammelt und so ein Prisma der Erforschung literarischer Repräsentationen des Zusammenspiels von einander verschärfenden bzw. abschwächenden Diskriminierungskategorien bietet. Inwiefern die Einzelbeiträge kritische Reflexionen verschiedener Positionen der Intersektionalitätsforschung präsentieren und Beispiele für die vielfältige Ausgestaltung intersektional orientierter Textanalyse auf theoretischer und methodischer Ebene anbieten sowie didaktische Lesarten des Intersektionalitätsparadigmas aufzeigen, machen wir aufbauend auf einer ausführlichen Begriffs- und Theoriereflexion einleitend deutlich.
Neulich nahm ich ein Buch von Sigrid Weigel in die Hand, das 1982 erschienen ist. Normalerweise bleiben alle Buchtitel auf einer Publikationsliste brav in einer chronologischen Reihe, und selbst wenn die Schlange sehr lang ist, was bei Weigel zweifellos der Fall ist, springt keiner von ihnen aus der Reihe und rennt nach vorne, in Richtung Zukunft. Aber es kommt doch vor, dass man, zum Beispiel bei einem Umzug, eines der Frühwerke in die Hand nimmt und darin blättert. Man wird überrascht von schillernden Denkbildern, die von heute sein könnten. Ansätze und Zusammenhänge, die man einer späteren Phase zugeordnet hätte, oder solche, die man jetzt erst begreift, stehen bereits in den älteren Büchern schwarz auf weiß. Gerade im digitalen Zeitalter, in dem die historischen Rahmen verschwimmen, gefällt mir die Unbestechlichkeit des Papiers, das die Zeit nie schleichend verfälscht. In der Forschung gibt es stets Fortschritt, aber wenn ich mir erlaube, Weigels Schriften nicht nur als wissenschaftliche Texte, sondern als Texte in ihrer gattungsfreien Nacktheit zu lesen, gibt es keinen Satz darin, der überholt ist. Die zeitliche Ordnung bleibt, verliert aber ihren hierarchischen Charakter. Wo ich eine alte Erinnerung erwarte, entdecke ich eine neue Möglichkeit, die Gegenwart zu verstehen. So entstand in mir der Wunsch, die jüngere Vergangenheit durch das Fenster der älteren zu betrachten. Ich rede hier nicht von der magischen Glaskugel einer Wahrsagerin, sondern von einer soliden Relektüre.
In this comprehensive review, we will dissect the impact of research on proteoglycans focusing on recent developments involved in their synthesis, degradation, and interactions, while critically assessing their usefulness in various biological processes. The emerging roles of proteoglycans in global infections, specifically the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and their rising functions in regenerative medicine and biomaterial science have significantly affected our current view of proteoglycans and related compounds. The roles of proteoglycans in cancer biology and their potential use as a next-generation protein-based adjuvant therapy to combat cancer is also emerging as a constructive and potentially beneficial therapeutic strategy. We will discuss the role of proteoglycans in selected and emerging areas of proteoglycan science, such as neurodegenerative diseases, autophagy, angiogenesis, cancer, infections and their impact on mammalian diseases.
This work addresses the investigation of the biosynthesis mechanisms of type II polyketide synthase (PKS) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) derived specialized metabolites (SMs) from Photorhabdus laumondii.
The elucidation of the biosynthetic pathway of the bacterial 3,5-dihydroxy-4-isopropyl-trans-stilbene (IPS) was one of the major topics of this thesis. IPS exhibits several bioactive characteristics as it inhibits the phenoloxidase of insects, acts antibacterial, but also influences the soluble epoxide hydrolase which is involved in inflammatory reactions. It was recently approved as a treatment against psoriasis by the FDA and is the first Photorhabdus derived drug.
The stilbene generation in Photorhabdus requires the formation of the two acyl-carrier-protein (ACP) bound 5-phenyl-2,4-pentadienoyl- and isovaleryl-β-ketoacyl-moieties. The ketosynthase (KS)/cyclase StlD catalyzes a ring formation via a Michael-addition between the two intermediates which is then further processed by an aromatase. The formation of 5-phenyl-2,4-pentadienoyl-ACP was shown via in vitro assays with purified proteins by proving the influence of the KS FabH, ketoreductase FabG and dehydratase FabA or FabZ of the fatty acid metabolism. While E. coli was able to complement most of these enzymes in attempts to produce IPS in the heterologous host, the Photorhabdus derived FabH was not replaceable despite 73 % sequence identity with the E. coli based isoenzyme, acting as a gatekeeper enzyme for cinnamic acid (CA) moieties. Furthermore, the ability to incorporate meta-substituted halogenated CA-derivatives was shown in order to produce 3-chloro- and 3-bromo-IPS. While studying the stilbene biosynthesis, the ability of Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus to produce hydrazines was also discovered.
The second investigated biosynthesis was the formation of benzylideneacetone (BZA). BZA is produced by Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus strains acting as a suppressor for the immune cascade of insects and has also antibiotic activities towards Gram-negative bacteria. Due to its structural similarity towards CA and the intermediates during the stilbene formation, a shared mechanism for Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus budapestensis was proposed due to their ability to produce CA. The production of BZA was also dependent on the stilbene related CoA-ligase, the ACP and FabH. It was verified in vitro and in vivo in E. coli yielding a 150-fold increase of the BZA production compared to the Photorhabdus and Xenorhabdus wildtype (WT) strains.
The second part of this work deals with the optimization of P. laumondii strains regarding the production titers of IPS. Therefore, several deletions of other SM related genes as well as promoter exchanges in front of stilbene related genes were carried out. These approaches were combined with the upregulation of the phenylalanine by heterologous plasmid expression, since it is the precursor of CA. Another approach applied in parallel was the optimization of the cultivation conditions with different media and supplementation with XAD-resins. It was proved that media rich on fatty acids or peptides led to higher optical densities of the cultures and thus to higher titers of stilbenes. Since IPS is inhibiting the phenoloxidase, an enzyme important for the insect immunity, it was hypothesized that cultivation in media containing insects might enhance the output of this SM. Starting from 23 mg/l of IPS in the P. laumondii WT strain, it was possible to increase the production levels to more than 860 mg/l by utilizing the mentioned approaches.
The last topic of this thesis focuses on the production of epoxidated IPS (EPS) and its derivatives. Under laboratory conditions, only a low titer of EPS was observed for the wildtype strain. However, the optimized IPS strains and IPS-production conditions could also be applied for EPS which led to higher productions and also to the detection of many new derivatives. Most of the EPS derivatives were amino acid or peptide derived acting as nucleophiles to open the epoxide ring and yielding β-amino-alcohols. However, purification and chemical synthesis attempts to obtain EPS failed due to its poor stability. Epoxides were utilized in in vitro assays with amino acids, peptides and proteins to get insights whether epoxidations might act as posttranslational modification in Photorhabdus. The reactions were performed with styrene oxide and stilbene oxide replacing EPS based on their structural similarity. The modifications were executed successfully although proteomics approaches with in vivo data are required to confirm these findings. During the purification attempts of EPS, further derivatives were detected. The structures of dimerized stilbenes, a cis-isomer of IPS and another derivative that might incorporate an amino-group in the resveratrol ring were proposed on the basis of the HPLC-MS data.
Assessment of the acute effects of 2C-B vs. psilocybin on subjective experience, mood, and cognition

2,5-dimethoxy-4-bromophenethylamine (2C-B) is a hallucinogenic phenethylamine derived from mescaline. Observational and preclinical data have suggested it to be capable of producing both subjective and emotional effects on par with other classical psychedelics and entactogens. Whereas it is the most prevalently used novel serotonergic hallucinogen to date, it's acute effects and distinctions from classical progenitors have yet to be characterized in a controlled study. We assessed for the first time the immediate acute subjective, cognitive, and cardiovascular effects of 2C-B (20 mg) in comparison to psilocybin (15 mg) and placebo in a within-subjects, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 22 healthy psychedelic-experienced participants. 2C-B elicited alterations of waking consciousness of a psychedelic nature, with dysphoria, subjective impairment, auditory alterations, and affective elements of ego dissolution largest under psilocybin. Participants demonstrated equivalent psychomotor slowing and spatial memory impairments under either compound compared with placebo, as indexed by the Digit Symbol Substitution Test, Tower of London, and Spatial Memory Task. Neither compound produced empathogenic effects on the Multifaceted Empathy Test. 2C-B induced transient pressor effects to a similar degree as psilocybin. The duration of self-reported effects of 2C-B was shorter than that of psilocybin, largely resolving within 6 hours. Present findings support the categorization of 2C-B as a psychedelic of moderate experiential depth at doses given. Tailored dose-effect studies are needed to discern the pharmacokinetic dependency of 2C-B's experiential overlaps.
The measurement of the production of f0(980) in inelastic pp collisions at √s=5.02 TeV is presented. This is the first reported measurement of inclusive f0(980) yield at LHC energies. The production is measured at midrapidity, |y|<0.5, in a wide transverse momentum range, 0<pT<16 GeV/c, by reconstructing the resonance in the f0(980) →π+π− hadronic decay channel using the ALICE detector. The pT-differential yields are compared to those of pions, protons and ϕ mesons as well as to predictions from the HERWIG 7.2 QCD-inspired Monte Carlo event generator and calculations from a coalescence model that uses the AMPT model as an input. The ratio of the pT-integrated yield of f0(980) relative to pions is compared to measurements in e+e− and pp collisions at lower energies and predictions from statistical hadronisation models and HERWIG 7.2. A mild collision energy dependence of the f0(980) to pion production is observed in pp collisions from SPS to LHC energies. All considered models underpredict the pT-integrated 2f0(980)/(π+ +π−) ratio. The prediction from the canonical statistical hadronisation model assuming a zero total strangeness content of f0(980) is consistent with the data within 1.9σ and is the closest to the data. The results provide an essential reference for future measurements of the particle yield and nuclear modification in p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions, which have been proposed to be instrumental to probe the elusive nature and quark composition of the f0(980) scalar meson.
In this thesis, we use lattice QCD to study a part of the QCD phase diagram, specifically the QCD phase transition at mu=0, where the QCD matter changes from hadron gas to quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with increasing temperature.
This phase transition takes place as a crossover, but when theoretically changing the masses of the quarks, the order of the phase transition changes as well.
We focus on the region of heavy quark masses with Nf=2 flavours, where we investigate the critical quark mass at the second order phase transition in the form of a Z2 point between the first-order and the crossover region.
The first-order region is positioned at infinitely heavy quarks. As the quark masses decrease, the associated Z3 centre symmetry breaks explicitly, causing the first-order phase transition to weaken until it turns into the Z2 point and finally into a crossover.
We study this Z2 point using simulations at Nf=2 and lattices of the sizes Nt = {6, 8, 10, 12}, partially building on previous work, in which the simulations for Nt = {6, 8, 10} were started.
The simulations for Nt=12 are not finished yet though, but we were able to draw some preliminary conclusions. These simulations are run on GPUs and CPUs, using the codes Cl2QCD and open-QCD-FASTSUM, respectively. Afterwards, the data goes through a first analysis step in the form of the Python program PLASMA, preparing it for the two techniques we use to analyse the nature of the phase transition.
As a first, reliable analysis method, we perform a finite size scaling analysis of the data to find the location of the Z2 point. Since we are using lattice QCD, performing a continuum extrapolation is necessary to reach the continuum result.
In regard to this, the finite size scaling analysis method is hampered by the excessive amount of simulated data that is needed regarding statistics and the total number of simulations, which is why this thesis is only an intermediate step towards the continuum limit.
This also leads to the second analysis technique we explore in this thesis.
We start to design a Landau theory which describes the phase boundary for heavy masses at Nf=2 based on the simulated data.
We develop a Landau functional for every Nt we have simulation data for.
Albeit the results are not at the same precision as the ones from the finite size scaling analysis, we are able to reproduce the position of the Z2 point for every Nt.
Even though we are not able to take a continuum extrapolation right now, after more development takes place in future works, this approach might, in the long run, lead to a continuum result that won't need as many simulations as the finite size scaling analysis.
Identification of new natural products from nematode-associated bacteria using mass spectrometry

This work aims to find unknown natural products produced by bacteria, that live in close association with nematodes and to elucidate their structure by using mass spectrometry.
The first chapter of this work is dedicated to the detection of hitherto unknown natural products by using a metabolomics approach and subsequent structure elucidation of said compounds. This chapter includes metabolomics analysis of Xenorhabdus szentirmaii wild type and knockout mutants, overproduction of the target compound, identification of derivatives from other strains and MS based structure elucidation.
The second and third chapters are about natural products that protect C. elegans from B. thuringiensis infections.
The second chapter deals with natural products that protect the nematode host without killing the pathogen. I deployed molecular biology methods to generate deletion and overproduction strains of a target compound, identified it via LC-MS/MS analysis and used LC-MS/MS and lipidomics to analyse the chemical properties of the active compound.
The third chapter aims at finding natural products, which are produced by Pseudomonas strains MYb11 and MYb12, respectively. These natural products display the ability to protect C. elegans by killing B. thuringiensis. I identified said compounds via fractionation and subsequent bioactivity testing. After identification, I generated production strains of the target compounds and elucidated the structure of the bioactive derivative.
The last chapter deals with the structure elucidation of peptides produced by an unusual GameXPeptide synthetase in Xenorhabdus miraniensis. I analysed producer strains of GameXPeptides using LC-MS and elucidated the structural differences between the known GameXPeptides, produced by P. luminescens TT01, and the unusual ones produced by X. miraniensis.
The first measurements of skewness and kurtosis of mean transverse momentum (⟨pT⟩) fluctuations are reported in Pb−Pb collisions at sNN−−−√ = 5.02 TeV, Xe−Xe collisions at sNN−−−√ = 5.44 TeV and pp collisions at s√=5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector. The measurements are carried out as a function of system size ⟨dNch/dη⟩1/3|η|<0.5, using charged particles with transverse momentum (pT) and pseudorapidity (η), in the range 0.2<pT<3.0 GeV/c and |η|<0.8, respectively. In Pb−Pb and Xe−Xe collisions, positive skewness is observed in the fluctuations of ⟨pT⟩ for all centralities, which is significantly larger than what would be expected in the scenario of independent particle emission. This positive skewness is considered a crucial consequence of the hydrodynamic evolution of the hot and dense nuclear matter created in heavy-ion collisions. Furthermore, similar observations of positive skewness for minimum bias pp collisions are also reported here. Kurtosis of ⟨pT⟩ fluctuations is found to be in good agreement with the kurtosis of Gaussian distribution, for most central Pb−Pb collisions. Hydrodynamic model calculations with MUSIC using Monte Carlo Glauber initial conditions are able to explain the measurements of both skewness and kurtosis qualitatively from semicentral to central collisions in Pb--Pb system. Color reconnection mechanism in PYTHIA8 model seems to play a pivotal role in capturing the qualitative behavior of the same measurements in pp collisions.
Die kongenitale Zytomegalievirus Infektion (cCMV-Infektion) ist die häufigste kongenitale Infektionskrankheit weltweit und ist der häufigste Grund für angeborene nicht-genetische Hörstörungen und eine häufige Ursache neurologische Entwicklungsstörungen. Die Inzidenz der cCMV-Infektion liegt in Deutschland zwischen 0,2 % – 0,5 %. Bei retroviral-exponierten Neugeborenen wird die Inzidenz mit 2,7 % – 11,4 % angegeben. Mit der erhöhten Inzidenz der cCMV-Infektion bei retroviral-exponierten Neugeborenen ergibt sich für diese Kinder ebenfalls ein erhöhtes Risiko für Langzeitfolgen. Die genaue Inzidenz der cCMV-Infektion variiert je nach untersuchter Population. Für Deutschland existiert eine retrospektive Studie, welche eine Inzidenz von 2,7 % für cCMV-Infektionen bei retroviral-exponierten Neugeborenen ermittelte. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde diese Inzidenz in einem prospektiven multizentrischem Studiendesign in Deutschland ermittelt.
Zur Ermittlung der Inzidenz der cCMV-Infektion bei retroviral-exponierten Neugeborenen und Beurteilung der Umsetzbarkeit eines cCMV-Neugeborenen-Screenings wurde ein selektives cCMV-Neugeborenen-Screening für retroviral-exponierte Neugeborene mittels PCR-Untersuchung auf CMV aus einem Mundschleimhautabstrich innerhalb der ersten 21 Lebenstage an drei Studienstandorten innerhalb Deutschlands, Mannheim, München und Frankfurt am Main, durchgeführt. Bei positivem Ergebnis der PCR auf CMV-DNA erfolgte eine Bestätigungsdiagnostik mittels erweiterter Urin- und Blutuntersuchung auf CMV. Zur Diagnostik von cCMV-assoziierten Symptomen erfolgte eine Sonographie des Abdomens und des Schädels sowie eine ausführliche körperliche Untersuchung, eine augenärztliche Evaluation und erweiterte Testungen der Gehörfunktion. Nachuntersuchungen und Therapien wurden den betroffenen Familien außerhalb der Studie angeboten.
122 / 184 (66,3 %) HIV-exponierte Neugeborene von 111 Müttern wurden im Studienzeitraum zwischen dem 24.11.2017 und dem 31.03.2021 eingeschlossen. Eine cCMV-Infektion wurde bei einem Neugeborenen nachgewiesen, sodass die Inzidenz der cCMV-Infektion bei retroviral-exponierten Neugeborenen in dieser Studie 0,8 % beträgt. Eine HIV-Mutter-Kind-Transmission wurde nicht detektiert. Die Seroprävalenz für CMV bei den HIV-positiven Frauen lag in diesem Kollektiv bei 96,1 %.
Das Neugeborene mit nachgewiesener cCMV-Infektion zeigte eine zerebrale Beteiligung mit ependymalen Zysten und einer thalamostriatalen Vaskulopathie und erhielt außerhalb der Studie eine zeitgerechte antivirale Therapie mit Beginn in der Neonatalper-ode. Im Verlauf zeigten sich trotz der antiviralen Therapie Entwicklungsstörungen mit autistischen Verhaltensweisen. Die cCMV-Infektion wäre ohne ein routinemäßiges Screening mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit nicht nachgewiesen worden.
Die frühzeitige Untersuchung der Probanden auf eine cCMV-Infektion hat sich in dieser Studie als vorteilhaft gezeigt, da bei Nachweis einer cCMV-Infektion zeitnah weiterführende Diagnostik und Therapien angeboten werden konnten. Auch die relativ große Anzahl an rekrutierten retroviral-exponierten Neugeborenen im prospektiven Studiendesign in Zusammenarbeit mit mehreren Studienzentren in Deutschland spricht für die Validität dieser Studie. Als Limitation ist zu nennen, dass ein statistisch signifikantes Ergebnis nicht erzielt werden konnte. Aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie kam es organisationbedingt zu einer relativ hohen Anzahl an nicht eingeschlossenen Patienten. Auch die geplante Rekrutierung einer Vergleichsgruppe in Südafrika konnte aufgrund der Pandemie nicht umgesetzt werden. Falsch negative Befunde wurden im Sinne der Familie nicht mittels Goldstandardmethode überprüft, sodass eine Unterschätzung der Rate an cCMV-Infektionen möglich ist.
Insgesamt konnte diese Studie neben der Ermittlung der cCMV-Inzidenz bei retroviral-exponierten Neugeborenen in Deutschland von 0,8 % aufgezeigt werden, dass selbst symptomatische cCMV-Infektionen ohne ein systematisches cCMV-Neugeborenen-Screening nicht sicher nachgewiesen werden konnte. Zudem konnte gezeigt werden, dass ein systematisches cCMV-Neugeborenen-Screening mittels Mundschleimhautabstrich in Deutschland praktikabel ist und bei den Sorgeberechtigten Akzeptanz findet. Den erhobenen Daten zur Folge könnte ein Screening aller Neugeborener oder zumindest ein risikoadaptiertes Screening auf das Vorliegen einer cCMV-Infektion dazu beitragen, dass mehr Kinder mit asymptomatischer oder unentdeckter symptomatischer cCMV-Infektion diagnostiziert werden und so eine entsprechende Behandlung ermöglicht sowie ggf. Langzeitfolgen möglichst verringert werden.
Weitere Studien zum Effekt der verfügbaren antiviralen Therapie bei cCMV-Infektionen und regelmäßiger Kontrolluntersuchungen nach stattgehabter cCMV-Infektion sind zu empfehlen, um die Auswirkungen dieser Maßnahmen auf den Krankheitsverlauf zu evaluieren.
The Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus is currently spreading across Europe, facilitated by climate change and global transportation. It is a vector of arboviruses causing human diseases such as chikungunya, dengue hemorrhagic fever and Zika fever. For the majority of these diseases, no vaccines or therapeutics are available. Options for the control of Ae. albopictus are limited by European regulations introduced to protect biodiversity by restricting or phasing out the use of pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products of genome editing. Alternative solutions are thus urgently needed to avoid a future scenario in which Europe faces a choice between prioritizing human health or biodiversity when it comes to Aedes-vectored pathogens. To ensure regulatory compliance and public acceptance, these solutions should preferably not be based on chemicals or GMOs and must be cost-efficient and specific. The present review aims to synthesize available evidence on RNAi-based mosquito vector control and its potential for application in the European Union. The recent literature has identified some potential target sites in Ae. albopictus and formulations for delivery. However, we found little information concerning non-target effects on the environment or human health, on social aspects, regulatory frameworks, or on management perspectives. We propose optimal designs for RNAi-based vector control tools against Ae. albopictus (target product profiles), discuss their efficacy and reflect on potential risks to environmental health and the importance of societal aspects. The roadmap from design to application will provide readers with a comprehensive perspective on the application of emerging RNAi-based vector control tools for the suppression of Ae. albopictus populations with special focus on Europe.
Background: Eukaryotic gene expression is controlled by cis-regulatory elements (CREs), including promoters and enhancers, which are bound by transcription factors (TFs). Differential expression of TFs and their binding affinity at putative CREs determine tissue- and developmental-specific transcriptional activity. Consolidating genomic data sets can offer further insights into the accessibility of CREs, TF activity, and, thus, gene regulation. However, the integration and analysis of multi-modal data sets are hampered by considerable technical challenges. While methods for highlighting differential TF activity from combined chromatin state data (e.g., ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, or DNase-seq) and RNA-seq data exist, they do not offer convenient usability, have limited support for large-scale data processing, and provide only minimal functionality for visually interpreting results.
Results: We developed TF-Prioritizer, an automated pipeline that prioritizes condition-specific TFs from multi-modal data and generates an interactive web report. We demonstrated its potential by identifying known TFs along with their target genes, as well as previously unreported TFs active in lactating mouse mammary glands. Additionally, we studied a variety of ENCODE data sets for cell lines K562 and MCF-7, including twelve histone modification ChIP-seq as well as ATAC-seq and DNase-seq datasets, where we observe and discuss assay-specific differences.
Conclusion: TF-Prioritizer accepts ATAC-seq, DNase-seq, or ChIP-seq and RNA-seq data as input and identifies TFs with differential activity, thus offering an understanding of genome-wide gene regulation, potential pathogenesis, and therapeutic targets in biomedical research.
Adhesion of human pathogenic bacteria to endothelial cells is facilitated by fibronectin interaction

Human pathogenic bacteria circulating in the bloodstream need to find a way to interact with endothelial cells (ECs) lining the blood vessels to infect and colonise the host. The extracellular matrix (ECM) of ECs might represent an attractive initial target for bacterial interaction, as many bacterial adhesins have reported affinities to ECM proteins, in particular to fibronectin (Fn). Here, we analysed the general role of EC-expressed Fn for bacterial adhesion. For this, we evaluated the expression levels of ECM coding genes in different ECs, revealing that Fn is the highest expressed gene and thereby, it is highly abundant in the ECM environment of ECs. The role of Fn as a mediator in bacterial cell-host adhesion was evaluated in adhesion assays of Acinetobacter baumannii, Bartonella henselae, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Staphylococcus aureus to ECs. The assays demonstrated that bacteria colocalised with Fn fibres, as observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Fn removal from the ECM environment (FN1 knockout ECs) diminished bacterial adherence to ECs in both static and dynamic adhesion assays to varying extents, as evaluated via absolute quantification using qPCR. Interactions between adhesins and Fn might represent the crucial step for the adhesion of human-pathogenic Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria targeting the ECs as a niche of infection.
This cumulative dissertation examines learning in chemistry laboratories, focusing on the challenges and benefits of problem-based learning (PBL) for novices in the lab. It addresses the lack of consistent understanding about what should be learned in labs and why it's important. The research aims to understand what students learn, how they learn, and how lab learning can be improved.
A central concept in PBL labs is Information Literacy, defined as a sociocultural practice enabling learners to identify and use information sources within a specific context as legitimized by the practice community.
The first publication, Wellhöfer and Lühken (2022a), investigates the relationship between PBL and learner motivation. It identifies factors that can foster students' intrinsic motivation in a PBL lab. Autonomy is found to be a key factor, increasing student motivation and presenting a model of the autonomous scientific process. This model involves four steps: information acquisition, designing and applying experimental procedures, experimental feedback, and autonomous process optimization. The results suggest that intrinsic motivation in PBL labs can be enhanced by enabling students to independently execute these steps.
The second publication, Wellhöfer and Lühken (2022b), examines the information process students undergo during their first PBL lab. Using a sociocultural framework, it explores Information Literacy to understand students' handling of information and their perceptions of the information process. The findings reveal that in PBL labs, developing a practical, applicable experimental procedure is crucial for problem-solving and significantly shapes the information-acquisition process. This process is iterative, influenced by new information, leading to more precise information needs. Students assess information quality based on its usefulness for their problem, implementability (considering cognitive understanding, available equipment, and psychomotor skills), and safety.
Furthermore, the role of privileged knowledge forms in evaluating the quality of text sources is explored. Students viewed non-scientific sources as "poor" and scientific sources as "good," yet used both for information gathering. There were discrepancies between their assessment of source quality and actual use, indicating that perception of source quality doesn't always affect their practical decisions.
The third publication, Wellhöfer, Machleid, and Lühken (2023), investigates students' information practices in the lab, focusing on discourse between novice learners and experienced assistants. It shows that theoretical knowledge isn't sufficient for independent practical action, and students need actionable social information from experienced community members. The results highlight that information literacy in the lab for newcomers to a community of practice has distinctive features, and physical experience and tacit knowledge are crucial for learning the methods and group-specific knowledge of the practice community. The article demonstrates how learning information literacy in a practice community requires a social and physical experience and provides insights on how educators can support this process.
Vor dem Hintergrund von Globalisierung und Migrationsbewegungen ist die Staatsbürgerschaft vermehrt der Frage nach der Rechtfertigung der Grenzen des Demos ausgesetzt. Prägend für die verfassungsrechtliche Definition dieser Grenzen war der ehemalige Bundesverfassungsrichter Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde, der auch die Ablehnung der ersten Anläufe des Ausländer:innenwahlrechts mitverantwortete. Der vorliegende Aufsatz vollzieht vor diesem Hintergrund Böckenfördes Bild der Staatsbürgerschaft nach. Seine Konzeption umfasst dabei in erster Linie einen legalen Status. Im Zusammenhang mit Böckenfördes Auslegung des Demokratieprinzips bleiben die historisch-spezifischen Inhalte und Grenzen der Bürgerschaft darüber hinaus stets an die Integrationsmöglichkeiten und das Selbstverständnis gegebener, notwendig homogener politischer Einheiten gekoppelt. In der Konfrontation mit der Kritik exklusiver politischer Gemeinschaften zeigt sich dennoch eine weite politische Gestaltungsfreiheit innerhalb von Böckenfördes Konzept, andererseits aber auch die Grenzen eines Dialogs zwischen Staatsrechtslehre und jenen neueren normativen Modellen demokratischer Gemeinschaft.
This study looks at potential windfall profits for the four banking acquisitions in 2023. Based on accounting figures, an FT article states that a total of USD 44bn was left on the table. We see accounting figures as a misleading analysis. By estimating marked-based cumulative abnormal returns (CAR), we find positive abnormal returns in all four cases which when made quantifiable, are around half of the FT’s accounting figures. Furthermore, we argue that transparent auctions with enough bidders should be preferred to negotiated bank sales.

Deuterons are atomic nuclei composed of a neutron and a proton held together by the strong interaction. Unbound ensembles composed of a deuteron and a third nucleon have been investigated in the past using scattering experiments and they constitute a fundamental reference in nuclear physics to constrain nuclear interactions and the properties of nuclei. In this work K+−d and p−d femtoscopic correlations measured by the ALICE Collaboration in proton−proton (pp) collisions at s√=13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented. It is demonstrated that correlations in momentum space between deuterons and kaons or protons allow us to study three-hadron systems at distances comparable with the proton radius. The analysis of the K+−d correlation shows that the relative distances at which deuterons and proton/kaons are produced are around 2 fm. The analysis of the p−d correlation shows that only a full three-body calculation that accounts for the internal structure of the deuteron can explain the data. In particular, the sensitivity of the observable to the short-range part of the interaction is demonstrated. These results indicate that correlations involving light nuclei in pp collisions at the LHC will also provide access to any three-body systems in the strange and charm sectors.
Autophagosome biogenesis requires a localized perturbation of lipid membrane dynamics and a unique protein-lipid conjugate. Autophagy-related (ATG) proteins catalyze this biogenesis on cellular membranes, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. Focusing on the final step of the protein-lipid conjugation reaction, ATG8/LC3 lipidation, we show how membrane association of the conjugation machinery is organized and fine-tuned at the atomistic level. Amphipathic α-helices in ATG3 proteins (AHATG3) are found to have low hydrophobicity and to be less bulky. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that AHATG3 regulates the dynamics and accessibility of the thioester bond of the ATG3∼LC3 conjugate to lipids, allowing covalent lipidation of LC3. Live cell imaging shows that the transient membrane association of ATG3 with autophagic membranes is governed by the less bulky- hydrophobic feature of AHATG3. Collectively, the unique properties of AHATG3 facilitate protein- lipid bilayer association leading to the remodeling of the lipid bilayer required for the formation of autophagosomes.
The ancestral SARS-CoV-2 strain that initiated the Covid-19 pandemic at the end of 2019 has rapidly mutated into multiple variants of concern with variable pathogenicity and increasing immune escape strategies. However, differences in host cellular antiviral responses upon infection with SARS-CoV-2 variants remain elusive. Leveraging whole-cell proteomics, we determined host signaling pathways that are differentially modulated upon infection with the clinical isolates of the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 B.1 and the variants of concern Delta and Omicron BA.1. Our findings illustrate alterations in the global host proteome landscape upon infection with SARS-CoV-2 variants and the resulting host immune responses. Additionally, viral proteome kinetics reveal declining levels of viral protein expression during Omicron BA.1 infection when compared to ancestral B.1 and Delta variants, consistent with its reduced replication rates. Moreover, molecular assays reveal deferral activation of specific host antiviral signaling upon Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 infections. Our study provides an overview of host proteome profile of multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants and brings forth a better understanding of the instigation of key immune signaling pathways causative for the differential pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 variants.
The interactions of kaons (K) and antikaons (K¯¯¯¯) with few nucleons (N) were studied so far using kaonic atom data and measurements of kaon production and interaction yields in nuclei. Some details of the three-body KNN and K¯¯¯¯NN dynamics are still not well understood, mainly due to the overlap with multi-nucleon interactions in nuclei. An alternative method to probe the dynamics of three-body systems with kaons is to study the final state interaction within triplet of particles emitted in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, which are free from effects due to the presence of bound nucleons. This Letter reports the first femtoscopic study of p−p−K+ and p−p−K− correlations measured in high-multiplicity pp collisions at s√ = 13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The analysis shows that the measured p−p−K+ and p−p−K− correlation functions can be interpreted in terms of pairwise interactions in the triplets, indicating that the dynamics of such systems is dominated by the two-body interactions without significant contributions from three-body effects or bound states.
A novel spatial autoregressive model for panel data is introduced, which incor-porates multilayer networks and accounts for time-varying relationships. Moreover, the proposed approach allows the structural variance to evolve smoothly over time and enables the analysis of shock propagation in terms of time-varying spillover effects.
The framework is applied to analyse the dynamics of international relationships among the G7 economies and their impact on stock market returns and volatilities. The findings underscore the substantial impact of cooperative interactions and highlight discernible disparities in network exposure across G7 nations, along with nuanced patterns in direct and indirect spillover effects.

This paper focuses on a key contradiction in nineteenth century nationalist ideology, namely the opposition between the emphasis on the sacred status of the mother tongue, on the one hand, and the use of universal mandatory schooling as a means of homogenization, on the other. The influential philologist Jacob Grimm insisted that only people whose mother tongue was German counted as members of the German nation; the mother tongue was the key criterion of authentic belonging. Yet Grimm also realized that mandatory schooling imposed a uniform language across a wide territory, wiping out local dialects and effectively giving shape to a more linguistically unified people. He thus witnessed how modern mass instruction forged a more standardized culture at the expense of the more natural-seeming transmission of language within families. In Grimm's writings on education, the valorization of the mother is continually disturbed by the presence of a surrogate figure, the school teacher.
Die Leerstelle Walter Benjamin : zur Verfehlung einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Wahlverwandtschaft

Unter den 53 Namen der Autoren, deren Beiträge in dem Jahrzehnt zwischen 1921 und 1931 in den neun Bänden der Vorträge der Bibliothek Warburg erschienen sind, springt eine signifikante Lücke ins Auge; es fehlt darin der Name Walter Benjamins. Die Tatsache, dass keine seiner Arbeiten den Weg in die Vorträge fand, ist mehr als bemerkenswert - dies nicht nur wegen der zahlreichen Korrespondenzen seiner Schriften zu den Forschungen der KBW und der deutlichen Nähe zwischen den Interessen Benjamins und Warburgs, die gegenwärtig zu den bekanntesten Köpfen der 'ersten Kulturwissenschaft' gezählt werden. Ihre Namen werden nicht selten zusammen diskutiert. Die Abwesenheit Walter Benjamins in den Publikationen der KBW wie überhaupt in deren gesamtem Netzwerk ist besonders irritierend, weil er sich seinerseits intensiv und ausdauernd darum bemüht hat, mit der Forschergruppe um Warburg in Kontakt zu treten, und seine Wertschätzung für Aby Warburg und dessen Bibliothek mehrfach in seinen Veröffentlichungen zum Ausdruck brachte. Die latente Wahlverwandtschaft der beiden herausragenden Kulturwissenschaftler aber konnte nicht manifest werden, weil ihre Formulierung einseitig blieb und eine Resonanz von der anderen Seite ausblieb.
We conduct a field experiment with clients of a German universal bank to explore the impact of peer information on sustainable retail investments. Our results show that infor-mation about peers’ inclination towards sustainable investing raises the amount allocated to stock funds labeled sustainable, when communicated during a buying decision. This effect is primarily driven by participants initially underestimating peers’ propensity to invest sustainably. Further, treated individuals indicate an increased interest in addi-tional information on sustainable investments, primarily on risk and return expectations. However, when analyzing account-level portfolio holding data over time, we detect no spillover effects of peer information on later sustainable investment decisions.
The role of lncRNAs in the CVS and the endothelium is highly diverse and has been subject to a substantial amount of research over the last decade. The identification of lncRNAs as clinically relevant biomarkers and as co-regulatory molecules let to the appreciation of the functional relevance of lncRNAs.
In the present study, LINC00607 was identified as an endothelial-enriched, human-specific lncRNA. With its distinct functions, LINC00607 maintains and supports the endothelial homeostasis especially in response to VEGF-A signalling.
In the first part of this study, LINC00607 was functionally characterized in human endothelial cells. LINC00607 is highly and specifically expressed in endothelial cells and is differentially regulated in CVDs. Depletion of LINC00607 resulted in decreased angiogenic sprouting, reduced integration of ECs in a newly formed vascular network in vivo, enhanced endothelial migration and differential expression of many important genes for endothelial cell homeostasis. Functionally, LINC00607 maintains ERG-driven endothelial gene expression programs through BRG1. BRG1 secures stably accessible enhancer regions as well as TSS of ERG target genes, thus enabling transcription of endothelial gene programs.
The second part of this study proposes an additional mode of action for LINC00607. The strongly impaired response to VEGF-A after LINC00607 KO can only be partially explained by its’ expression control of ERG target genes. It rather appears that LINC00607 is involved in the control of alternative splicing of VEGF receptor FLT1. The differential splicing of FLT1 produces the anti-angiogenic soluble isoform of FLT1. Even though further validation is needed to uncover the underlying mechanism, there is the potential of a more general role of LINC00607 in splicing control through BRG1. As AS of FLT1 is a clinical marker in preeclampsia, LINC00607 might qualify to be an additional marker for the onset and manifestation of the pregnancy disorder.
Taken together, LINC00607 is a target in future for molecular therapy in CVD to restore a healthy endothelial phenotype and has the potential to serve as a biomarker in preeclampsia.
In our rapidly changing world, land use has been recognized as having one of the strongest impacts on species and genetic diversity. The present state of temperate forests in Europe is a product of decisions made by former and current management and policy actions, rather than natural factors. Alterations of crown projection areas, structural complexity of the forest stand caused by thinning and cuttings, and changes in tree species composition caused by regeneration or plantings not only affect forest interior buffering against warming, but also the understorey light environment and nutrient availability. Ultimately, current silvicultural management practices have deep impact on the forest ecosystems, microenvironmental changes and forest floor understorey herbs. In response to environmental changes, plants rely on genetically heritable phenotypic variation, an important level of variation in the population, as it is prerequisite for adaptation. However, until now most studies on plant adaptation to land use focus on grassland management. Yet, studies on the adaptation of forest understorey herbs to forest management have been absent so far. This is important because understanding adaptation of understorey herbs is crucial for biodiversity conservation, forest restoration, and climate change mitigation. Studying current adaptation of understorey herbs to forest management yields insights into the evolutionary consequences of management practices, which could be employed to improve sustainable use of forest habitat.
In sum, my conducted experiments complement each other well and managed to fill in research gaps on the topic of genetically heritable phenotypic variation in understorey herbs and how it is affected by forest management and related microenvironmental variables. I showed that forest management has direct evolutionary consequences on the genetic basis of understorey herbs, but also indirectly through the microenvironment. Furthermore, I revealed that local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity of understorey herbs to forest structural attributes act along continuous gradients. And lastly, I highlighted the important role of intra-individual variation by revealing plastic responses to drought and shading, urging researchers to not ignore this important level of trait variation. Ultimately, understorey herbs in temperate forests employ phenotypic plasticity as a flexible strategy to adapt to varying environmental conditions. By adjusting their leaf characteristics, reproductive investment, and phenology, they can optimize their fitness and survival in response to changes in light availability, resource availability, and seasonal cues. The anthropogenic impact on temperate forests and understorey herbs will continue and likely increase in the future. This should urge foresters to adapt their silvicultural management decisions towards the long-term preservation of genetic diversity and, through this, the evolvability and adaptability of forest understorey herbs and associated organisms. Based on the results shown in my dissertation, variation in forest management regimes and types could be beneficial for promoting genetic diversity within several species of forest understorey herbs. Lastly, in the face of future climatic changes, the mechanisms by which plants can cope with increasing stressful environmental conditions might very well rely heavily on intra-individual variation, providing the necessary rapid plastic adjustment to changing microclimatic conditions within populations and thus increase climate change resilience.
Das Verständnis von Tumorerkrankungen wurde durch neue technologische und ökonomische Verbesserungen für die Next-Generation-Sequencing Analyse (NGS) gefördert. Die Komplexität der Interpretation genomischer Daten erschwert jedoch die Anwendung von NGS-Analysen im klinischen Kontext. Die Herausforderung besteht darin bei stetig wachsendem medizinischem Wissen dieses im klinischen Kontext zu interpretieren und eine personalisierte Therapieempfehlung abzugeben. Einen ressourcensparenden Ansatz können KI-unterstützende Software-Programme bieten, welche die genomischen Varianten mit der aktuellen Literatur vergleichen, eine Bewertung der Therapieoptionen geben und klinische Studien empfehlen können. In dieser retrospektiven Arbeit wurden Patient:innen mit metastasiertem Brustkrebs (n=77) mittels gezielter NGS-Analyse anhand von sogenannten Genpanels mit 126 bzw. 540 krebsrelevanten Genen im Zeitraum von 01/2019-02/2022 untersucht. Mit Hilfe von bioinformatischen Methoden wurden patientenspezifische genomische Veränderungen mit Behandlungsoptionen abgeglichen. Diese Methoden stützen sich vollständig auf öffentliche Datenbanken über somatische Varianten mit prädiktiver Evidenz für das Ansprechen auf bestimmte Medikamente. Diese Versorgungsforschung einer repräsentativen Kohorte des Universitätsklinikums Frankfurt in Kooperation mit Regionalverbund OncoNet Rhein-Main wurden systematisch ausgewertet inklusive der Bedeutung genomischer Varianten. Das OncoNet Rhein-Main ist eine Kooperation aus führenden onkologischen Zentren und Praxen im Rhein-Main-Gebiet, welche sich als Netzwerk der Aufgabe angenommen haben Patient:innen optimal therapeutisch zu versorgen. Für 51% (39/77) der Patient:innen konnte mindestens eine gezielte Therapieoption mit einem effektivem Biomarker im gleichen Tumortyp gemäß Zulassung der Europäischen Arzneimittelbehörde (EMA) gefunden werden.
Bei 12/77 (16%) wurde mindestens eine Alteration mit einem effektivem Biomarker und einer OFF-Label Therapieoption gefunden. Bei 30% der Patient:innen wurden Veränderungen in optionalen Biomarkern gefunden, welche Resistenzmechanismen erklären. Die umfassende molekulare Analyse von Patient:innen mit fortgeschrittenem Brustkrebs erlaubt die Behandlungsoption zu verbessern und ermöglicht durch die Analyse von bekannten Resistenzmarkern auch den klinischen Verlauf besser zu verstehen. Die interdisziplinäre Besprechung der Befunde im molekularem Tumorboard ist im Hinblick auf kontinuierliches Lernen aller Beteiligten sowie zur Qualitätssicherung eine entscheidende obligate Maßnahme.
For the search of the chiral magnetic effect (CME), STAR previously presented the results from isobar collisions (9644Ru+9644Ru, 9640Zr+9640Zr) obtained through a blind analysis. The ratio of results in Ru+Ru to Zr+Zr collisions for the CME-sensitive charge-dependent azimuthal correlator (Δγ), normalized by elliptic anisotropy (v2), was observed to be close to but systematically larger than the inverse multiplicity ratio. The background baseline for the isobar ratio, Y=(Δγ/v2)Ru(Δγ/v2)Zr, is naively expected to be (1/N)Ru(1/N)Zr; however, genuine two- and three-particle correlations are expected to alter it. We estimate the contributions to Y from those correlations, utilizing both the isobar data and HIJING simulations. After including those contributions, we arrive at a final background baseline for Y, which is consistent with the isobar data. We extract an upper limit for the CME fraction in the Δγ measurement of approximately 10% at a 95% confidence level on in isobar collisions at sNN−−−√=200 GeV.
In the culture history of ancient Europe questions pertaining to its diverse relationships to advanced civilisations in the Mediterranean sphere look back upon a long tradition. Varyingly different single finds and groups of finds have repeatedly provided the prospect and scope for investigating the character and extent of contacts and influences as well as the consequences for cultural developments north of the Alps. In discussions on the genesis and significance of the Bronze Age in central and northern Europe, the perceived linkages between the eastern Mediterranean and the Carpathian Basin and via the Danube River as far as areas north of the Alps have played an important role. Without question, the Danube River represented a crucial axis of communication ever since the Neolithic period and in following times. Recent interdisciplinary studies, however, have broadened the scope and shown that further important communication routes existed along the Ionian-Adriatic Sea to Upper Italy and beyond the Alps, and via the Rhône valley and the West Alps to the North. Thereby, impulses of varying economic nature could be discerned, which were consequential for many aspects of the cultural development of the Early and Middle Bronze Age in Central Europe.
Elliptic flow of heavy-flavor decay electrons in Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 27 and 54.4 GeV at RHIC

We report on new measurements of elliptic flow (v2) of electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays at mid-rapidity (|y|<0.8) in Au+Au collisions at sNN−−−√ = 27 and 54.4\,GeV from the STAR experiment. Heavy-flavor decay electrons (eHF) in Au+Au collisions at sNN−−−√ = 54.4\,GeV exhibit a non-zero v2 in the transverse momentum (pT) region of pT< 2\,GeV/c with the magnitude comparable to that at sNN−−−√=200 \,GeV. The measured eHF v2 at 54.4\,GeV is also consistent with the expectation of their parent charm hadron v2 following number-of-constituent-quark scaling as other light and strange flavor hadrons at this energy. These suggest that charm quarks gain significant collectivity through the evolution of the QCD medium and may reach local thermal equilibrium in Au+Au collisions at sNN−−−√=54.4\,GeV. The measured eHF v2 in Au+Au collisions at sNN−−−√= 27\,GeV is consistent with zero within large uncertainties. The energy dependence of v2 for different flavor particles (π,ϕ,D0/eHF) shows an indication of quark mass hierarchy in reaching thermalization in high-energy nuclear collisions.
We report the first measurements of cumulants, up to 4th order, of deuteron number distributions and proton-deuteron correlations in Au+Au collisions recorded by the STAR experiment in phase-I of Beam Energy Scan (BES-I) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Deuteron cumulants, their ratios, and proton-deuteron mixed cumulants are presented for different collision centralities covering a range of center of mass energy per nucleon pair sNN−−−√ = 7.7 to 200 GeV. It is found that the cumulant ratios at lower collision energies favor a canonical ensemble over a grand canonical ensemble in thermal models. An anti-correlation between proton and deuteron multiplicity is observed across all collision energies and centralities, consistent with the expectation from global baryon number conservation. The UrQMD model coupled with a phase-space coalescence mechanism qualitatively reproduces the collision-energy dependence of cumulant ratios and proton-deuteron correlations.
New state records for 33 species of Leiodidae (Coleoptera) are reported from Ohio, with the majority of records from one locality in the southeastern portion of the state. This doubles the known members of
the family in Ohio to 66 species in 20 genera.

Long non-coding RNAs are a very versatile class of molecules that can have important roles in regulating a cells function, including regulating other genes on the transcriptional level. One of these mechanisms is that RNA can directly interact with DNA thereby recruiting additional components such as proteins to these sites via an RNA:dsDNA triplex formation. We genetically deleted the triplex forming sequence (FendrrBox) from the lncRNA Fendrr in mice and found that this FendrrBox is partially required for Fendrr function in vivo. We found that the loss of the triplex forming site in developing lungs causes a dysregulation of gene programs associated with lung fibrosis. A set of these genes contain a triplex site directly at their promoter and are expressed in lung fibroblasts. We biophysically confirmed the formation of an RNA:dsDNA triplex with target promoters in vitro. We found that Fendrr with the Wnt signalling pathway regulates these genes, implicating that Fendrr synergizes with Wnt signalling in lung fibrosis.
The elliptic (v2) and triangular (v3) azimuthal anisotropy coefficients in central 3He+Au, d+Au, and p+Au collisions at sNN−−−√ = 200 GeV are measured as a function of transverse momentum (pT) at mid-rapidity (|η|<0.9), via the azimuthal angular correlation between two particles both at |η|<0.9. While the v2(pT) values depend on the colliding systems, the v3(pT) values are system-independent within the uncertainties, suggesting an influence on eccentricity from sub-nucleonic fluctuations in these small-sized systems. These results also provide stringent constraints for the hydrodynamic modeling of these systems.

Im Jahre 1772 begann Johann Wolfgang Goethe sein Opus magnum. Der Stoff, der zunächst als »Urfaust« in die Literaturgeschichte eingehen sollte, begleitete ihn bis zum Lebensende. Den Weg bis zur Vollendung von »Faust II« macht ein ebenfalls opulentes Projekt transparent: Die »Faust Edition digital«, die unter der Regie von Goethe-Expertin Prof. Anne Bohnenkamp-Renken entstanden ist.
Die Goethe-Universität hat zwei neue DFG-Graduiertenkollegs eingeworben. »Fixing Futures« ist ganz in Frankfurt angesiedelt und befasst sich mit der Antizipation von Zukünften. Ein zweites, gemeinsam mit der Technischen Universität (TU) Darmstadt beantragtes Graduiertenkolleg widmet sich der Frage, wie »Standards des Regierens« die Möglichkeit kollektiver Selbstbestimmung verändern.

Abstract
Based on its phylogenetic relationship to monitor lizards (Varanidae), Gila monsters (Heloderma spp.), and the earless monitor Lanthanotus borneesis, the Chinese crocodile lizard, Shinisaurus crocodilurus, has been assigned to the Toxicofera clade, which comprises venomous reptiles. However, no data about composition and biological activities of its oral secretion have been reported. In the present study, a proteomic analysis of the mandibular gland of S. crocodilurus and, for comparison, of the herbivorous Solomon Island skink Corucia zebrata, was performed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the teeth from S. crocodilurus revealed a sharp ridge on the anterior surface, but no grooves, whereas those of C. zebrata possess a flattened crown with a pointed cusp. Proteomic analysis of their gland extracts provided no evidence of venom-derived peptides or proteins, strongly supporting the non-venomous character of these lizards. "Autonomy is the condition under which what one does reflects who one is" (Weinrib, 2019, p.8). This quote encapsulates the core idea of autonomy, namely the correspondence of one’s inner values with one’s actions. This is a beautiful idea. After all, who wants their actions to be determined or controlled from the outside?
The classical definition of autonomy is precisely about this independence from external circumstances, which Murray (1938) primarily coined. Among other things, Murray characterizes autonomy as resistance to influence and defiance of authority. Similarly, Piaget (1983) describes individuals as autonomous, independent of external influences, in their thinking and actions, and foremost, adult authority. Subsequent work criticized this equation of autonomy with separation or independence (Bekker, 1993; Chirkov et al., 2003; Hmel & Pincus, 2002). In lieu thereof, autonomy is defined as an ability (Chirkov, 2011; Rössler, 2017) and as an essential human need (Ryan & Deci, 2006). Focus is now
on self-governing while relying on rationally determined values to pursue a happy life (Chirkov, 2011). According to Social Determination Theory (SDT), autonomy is about a sense of initiative and responsibility for one’s own actions. The experience of interest and appreciation can strengthen autonomy, whereas experiences of external control, e.g., through rewards or punishments, limit autonomy (Ryan & Deci, 2020). In the psychological discourse of autonomy, SDT is strongly represented (Chirkov et al., 2003; Koestner & Losier, 1996; Weinstein et al., 2012). Notably, SDT distinguishes between autonomy and independence as follows. While a person can autonomously ask for help or rely on others, a person can also be involuntarily alone and independent. Interestingly, these definitions are again closer to its etymological meaning as self-governing, originating from Greek αυτòνoμζ (autonomous).
The two strands of autonomy as independence and autonomy as self-determination are also reflected in the vital differentiation into reactive and reflective autonomy by Koestner and Losier (1996). Resisting external influence, particularly interpersonal in fluence, is what reactive autonomy entails. This interpretation is closely related to the classical concept of autonomy as separation and independence from others (Murray, 1938). On the other hand, reflective autonomy concerns intrapersonal processes, such as self-governing or self-regulation, as defined in Self-Determination Theory (Ryan et al., 2021). In this dissertation, we investigated the concept in three different approaches while focusing on its assessment and operationalization: To begin, in Article 1, we compared the layperson’s and the scientific perspective to each other to gain insight into the characteristics of autonomy. Then, in Articles 2 and 3, we experimentally tested behavioral autonomy as resistance to external influences. Simultaneously, we investigated the link between various autonomy trait measures and autonomous behavior. As a result, in Article 2, we looked at how people reacted to the effects of message framing and sender authority on social distancing behavior during the early COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, in Article 3 we investigated the resistance to a descriptive norm in answering factual questions, in the context of autonomous personality. In our first article, we used a semi-qualitative bottom-up approach to gain insights into the laypersons’ perspective on autonomy and compare it to the scientific notion. We followed a design proposed by Kraft-Todd and Rand (2019) on the term heroism. We derived five components from philosophical and psychological literature: dignity, independence from others, morality, self-awareness, and unconventionality. In three preregistered online studies, we compared these scientific components to the laypersons’ understanding of autonomy. In Study 1, participants (N = 222) listed at least three and up to ten examples of autonomous (self-determined) behaviors. Here, the participants named 807 meaningful examples, which we systematically categorized into 34 representative items for Study 2. Next, new participants (N = 114) rated these regarding their autonomy. Finally, we transferred the five highest-rated autonomy and the five lowest-rated autonomy items to Study 3 (N = 175). We asked participants to rate how strongly the items represented dignity, independence from others, morality, self-awareness, and unconventionality. We found all components to distinguish between high and low autonomy items but not for unconventionality. Thus, we conclude that laypersons’ view corresponds with the scientific characteristics of dignity, independence from others, self-awareness, and morality. A qualitative analysis of the examples also showed that both reactive and reflective definitions of autonomy are prevalent.
Behavioural inflexibility is a symptom of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Alzheimer’s Disease, encompassing the maintenance of a behaviour even when no longer appropriate. Recent evidence suggests that insulin signalling has roles apart from its regulation of peripheral metabolism and mediates behaviourally-relevant central nervous system (CNS) functions including behavioural flexibility. Indeed, insulin resistance is reported to generate anxious, perseverative phenotypes in animal models, with the Type 2 diabetes medication metformin proving to be beneficial for disorders including Alzheimer’s Disease. Structural and functional neuroimaging studies of Type 2 diabetes patients have highlighted aberrant connectivity in regions governing salience detection, attention, inhibition and memory. As currently available therapeutic strategies feature high rates of resistance, there is an urgent need to better understand the complex aetiology of behaviour and develop improved therapeutics. In this review, we explore the circuitry underlying behavioural flexibility, changes in Type 2 diabetes, the role of insulin in CNS outcomes and mechanisms of insulin involvement across disorders of behavioural inflexibility.
Beside its involvement in somatic dysfunctions, altered insulin signalling constitutes a risk factor for the development of mental disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and obsessive-compulsive disorder. While insulin-related somatic and mental disorders are often comorbid, the fundamental mechanisms underlying this association are still elusive. Studies conducted in rodent models appear well suited to help decipher these mechanisms. Specifically, these models are apt to prospective studies in which causative mechanisms can be manipulated via multiple tools (e.g., genetically engineered models and environmental interventions), and experimentally dissociated to control for potential confounding factors. Here, we provide a narrative synthesis of preclinical studies investigating the association between hyperglycaemia – as a proxy of insulin-related metabolic dysfunctions – and impairments in working and spatial memory, and attention. Ultimately, this review will advance our knowledge on the role of glucose metabolism in the comorbidity between somatic and mental illnesses.
Hurd (1952), in revising the Nearctic species of Pepsis Fabricius, separated P. cerberus Lucas from P. elegans Lepeletier based on external morphology and geography. Vardy (2005), in his Western Hemisphere Pepsis revision, combined these taxa and several Neotropical color and structural variants in a broad definition of P. menechma Lepeletier extending across ~11,250 km and two continents. Vardy (2005) synonymized the familiar and well-documented, 160-year-old P. elegans under P. menechma probably because it appeared several pages later in Lepeletier’s (1845) Histoire Naturelle des Insectes. Hyménoptères. Vardy’s (2005) interpretation of Pepsis menechma as a viable species presents a taxonomic and nomenclatural problem. He violated the principle of nomenclatural stability in synonymizing the widely and established species names P. elegans and P. cerberus under P. menechma, a name that had not been used for 160 years. Recent discoveries warrant a re-evaluation of the problematic taxonomy of this species complex. Morphological and ecological divergence of P. elegans and its sister taxon, P. cerberus, combined with their narrow sympatric distribution justifies species recognition. Hurd’s (1952) two species concept for P. elegans and P. cerberus is more practicable, useful, and nomenclaturally acceptable than Vardy’s (2005) P. menechma. Pepsis cerberus Lucas and P. elegans Lepeletier should be reinstated as species and removed from the synonymy of Pepsis menechma Lepeletier.

The stinkbug Edessa leucogramma (Perty) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae: Edessinae) is reported as a pest of young yellow guayacán trees (Handroanthus chrysanthus (Jacq.) S.O. Grose, Bignoniaceae) in the metropolitan area of the Aburra Valley in Antioquia, Colombia (AMVA). We provide a short description of the adult and immature stages and report for the first-time protozoa associated with the digestive system of this species of true bug in addition to information regarding a fungus found associated with Edessa leucogramma in the field.

We simultaneously considered morphology and molecular phylogeny to modify the generic classification of the ‘pyropterine clade’ (Lycidae, Erotinae, Dictyopterini). To place species previously included in Benibotarus Kôno, 1932 in reciprocally monophyletic genera, we propose Gomezzuritus gen. nov. with the type-species Dictyopterus alternatus Fairmaire, 1856. Further, we transfer Gomezzuritus alternatus (Fairmaire, 1856) comb. nov., G. longicornis (Reiche, 1878) comb. nov., and G. rubripes (Pic, 1897) comb. nov. from Benibotarus to Gomezzuritus gen. nov. The pyropterine clade contains five genera in the Palaearctic region: Pyropterus Mulsant, 1838, Gomezzuritus gen. nov., Helcophorus Fairmaire, 1891, Greenarus Kazantsev, 1995, and Benibotarus Kôno, 1932. The arrangement of longitudinal elytral costae proved misleading for consideration of relationships. Two genera in distant positions share only four primary costae (Pyropterus and Helcophorus), and three similarly distant genera share the shortened primary costa 3, resulting in three primary and four secondary longitudinal costae (Gomezzuritus, Greenarus, and Benibotarus). The larva of Gomezzuritus alternatus is described in detail, and it is compared with the larvae of other Dictyopterini, including the presumed larva of G. longicornis.
The present work reviews the deep-water cone fauna of New Caledonia and its Economic Exclusive Zone. It is based on the material collected for more than 40 years by oceanographic expeditions in the deep waters surrounding New Caledonia, organized by the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle-Paris/ORSTOM, then Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, in the framework of the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos programme. A total of 2377 lots containing 5113 specimens collected in depths between 100 and 1260 m have been examined. About 770 specimens were collected live, and allowed for radular and DNA studies. A phylogenetic analysis, based on the cox1 gene, of the deep-water cone snail fauna of New Caledonia is presented, along with a detailed, fully illustrated taxonomic account with data on geographic and bathymetric distribution and radular morphology. A total of 76 different species of cone snails were identified among the collected material. Of these, 22 corresponded to typical shallow water species, which were most likely translocated into deeper water, whereas 54 could be considered true components of the deep water (below 100 m) cone snail fauna. Species of the genus Profundiconus represent 22%, whereas those of the genera Conasprella and Conus represent 28% and 50%, respectively. Eleven deep water cone species can be considered as endemic to the New Caledonia EEZ, representing 20.3% of the total. The most abundant species found (more than 400 specimens each) were Conus (Afonsoconus) bruuni, Conasprella (Boucheticonus) alisi, Conasprella (Conasprella) boucheti, and Profundiconus vaubani. The new species Conus (Taranteconus) samadiae sp. nov. is hereby described.
